That Stanford result was my fear: Mitch lays an egg in his first real challenge of the season. Beating up on inferior competition until then.
USC is a decent team, so taking 2 of 3 would be acceptable and get the team back on track. 1 of 3 or worse would be a disaster, as would anything but out-athleting Portland.
Go Beavs!
First!
Where did Mitch bat in the order? This is why there is an adage about good defense beats a good offense. OS just couldn’t get the clutch hit. I am not sure specifically how Mitch layed the egg. The Beavs played a bunch of close games this weeks with late game heroics, statistics are going to catch up with you.
They did get a clutch hit in game 1 but the runner was already in the dugout and getting sent by the third base coach…Seems like all facets of the team need to sharpen up a bit.
After*
LOL, maybe it’s all the fault of the base coaches?
Word is Meckler would have never stretched that single Saturday to set up the win if he’d have listened to Darwin!
If you read my post, I’m placing blame on all areas of the team. Plenty of time left to see what this team really it. Go Beavs!
Got to agree, Sparky
Surprised D1 Baseball and Baseball America kept the Beavs ranked #6 and #5 repectively after last week. I guess going 3-2 on a tough week schedule wise is good enough to not slip, but losing a series to a middle ground Pac12 team should count for something.
Coaches poll dropped Beavs from 4 to 5; Tree from 26 t0 27.
Polls are of little value, heck, I’d put the “angry” poll at dropping from 24 to 33. What say you, angry??
JT Daniels update. Visited WVU over the weekend. They had their spring game as well. Here’s a little story with a recap of their QB room. Basically their 2 year starter is gone(transfer) and they have 3 guys competing for the job with no clear front runner. A little similar to OSU although we are returning our most recent starters.
Also, sounds like there has been a little turmoil in the WVU program with several key players transferring out recently, which usually isnt a good sign.
OSU has lost a handful of transfers too, but it’s mostly been guys who werent playing much, if at all.
The story from Thamel a week ago was that Daniels would choose a school in the next couple of weeks.
https://www.si.com/college/westvirginia/football/greene-impresses-marchiol-was-feast-famine-in-saturdays-scrimmage#gid=ci029dba95d0002674&pid=garrett-greene
If Mitch had more moxie we wouldn’t have lost three of our best pitchers. I am sure the whole staff planned on losing those guys.
This is obvious sarcasm. I would to see the loudest critics here coach any baseball team. I imagine none of them ever have coached at all. It’s similar to people calling up customer service and yelling at the person on the phone, acting like they are in cahoots with decisions from upper management.
I’d love to hear specifics on what the coaching staff could have done to be better. IMO, they done a hell of a job with the hand they’ve been dealt.
Nine.
Injury: Pfennings, Mundt, Frisch.
Graduation: Mully
Transfer: Washburn
Pros: Abel, Burns, Salgado, Watkins
If Mitch wasn’t a good recruiter we would be completely screwed. Additions of Kmatz, Ferrer, and Carpenter have been critical and I think we will be seeing plenty of growth from a bunch of the other new comers.
Pfennigs you stupid phone
Spot on, I was just talking about in season roster injuries. You make a good point about the guys who moved onto the Pro’s, this team would be legendary with them on the roster.
I am also hopeful regarding the growth of the newcomers. They have been thrown into the fire and have plenty of time to right the ship. Pitching is so volatile, especially for relievers. Just look the MLB, and very few relievers are consistently all star level year after year. They usually ebb and flow.
One of the worst arguments ever on the internet is you have to do a profession to recognize someone who is bad at that profession. It’s a non starter the logic is so poor.
I think a worse argument is acting like you’ve done something before when you never have at any level. Especially when you are criticizing someone who is doing at least a decent job at something at a high level. You might call him a professional. Do you criticize your mechanic, doctor, and dentist? If this thing was a dumpster fire I would agree but it’s far from that. I am all for fair takes but these have been far from those.
Yes. I have criticized my dentist, doctor, mechanic, butcher, college professors, car salesman, florist, baker, president, US Senator… being a professional does not mean that someone without the same experience or credentials can’t notice that they are bad at what they do.
But… it is a special kind of spoiled fanbase that gets to sit around and bicker over the merits of their top 10 ranked baseball team. What would we give for a basketball coach to be as horrible as MC is at baseball?
Why don’t you just hire a new dentist, doctor, mechanic, etc? You literally challenge them on their field of expertise? “Well doc I diagnosed myself, looked it up on google.” I guess for me its different, I hire people I trust and who are experts in a field I know I am not.
That being said, you are on the money with the spoiled fanbase comment. It reminds of all my friends who are duck football fans and it drives me nuts. I literally became a beaver fan because of how much I couldn’t stand the ducks fan base. Yet here are beaver fans doing the same with a baseball team that is pretty damn good.
Also, you’ll notice that no one can lay out any specifics at what Mitch is bad at. They’ll just change the subject. I guess my point is you should have some base level of knowledge to criticize someone. When its apparent that they have zero knowledge on a subject its hard for me listen to it and doesn’t give the person credibility. For me, that is the most annoying thing on the internet. All these so called keyboard experts.
You’ve never decided to change a service provider? Like never? I’m glad Harold Shipman wasn’t your primary care provider. I mean, he was an expert.
That was my question to you lol. Why not hire a new one if you think they are bad at their job? You make it sound like you keep them and then just argue. I guess it adds up based on your comment above.
Anyway, the real point is Mitch isn’t a bad coach and its silly to say he is. I fine for being critical but when people are making up narratives it gets real annoying.
Angry will never come around on Mitch.
I don’t know about never coming around but it is human nature that when you take a position you look for facts that fill in your narrative.
He has such a bad first date with Mitch (2020 season) that it’s just ingrained in his mind. Can’t shake those kinds of impressions.
Agreed. It’s a smart take really. Most coaches get fired, move to a better job or retire/die. Mitch would probably be with the beavs for 30+ years to retire with honors so angry has a high probability of being able to say he nailed it in the end. Same goes for Niner.
In Angry’s defense, he hasn’t been the only person that has been critical of the coaching staff. That being said, I’ve been impressed by the staff myself. They’ve kept the winning momentum going and I haven’t seen the regression of a program headed in the wrong direction.
Mitch won’t be here forever. He was on track for landing a MLB job. He was very well liked and was moving up rapidly in what is now the third best farm system in the entire MLB (Seattle). OSU was smart to grab him while they could. I fully expect to see him as a MLB manager one day.
Canham won’t leave unless he’s fired or retires. The only job he said he’d take over an MLB job was OSU. He’s out of the running for an MLB job because of that. They don’t hire college coaches for the big job, no matter the pro experience or success at the college level.
I would agree in most cases but Canham is a different case. He can do both and has proven it. He was coaching at a AA level in the MLB which is where you really start to learn how to win. The fact that he can then go to the college ranks and recruit with the best of them should tell you a lot. Usually the recruiting is a toughest adjustment from pros to college. Pat Murphy is still in the MLB and he coached in the Pac 12 successfully, so its not written in stone that it doesn’t happen. It’s just rare.
Obviously I don’t know him personally or what motivates him. I’ve heard other coaches say things similar, “like this is my dream job”, then up and leave when a great offer fell in their lap. I guess I think because of his age, he may want something different down the road.
I would if his teams would win consistently and/or win big games. I mean the biggest series of the year and they lay an egg…
What is there to come around to?
With the roster losses we should be worse than last year, he’ll it’s what you predicted.
We aren’t noticeably worse and most of our top players are Canham recruits.
I still don’t know what he’s actually good at. With Casey you could point to key characteristics; things he was good at (e.g. small ball, motivation, fundamentals, etc). With Mitch I can’t find anything he’s good at. He has better athletes than most schools so he wins some games. When the other team has equal athletes, he doesn’t manage in a way to overcome that level playing field.
He’s unquestionably a good recruiter.
Well I meant on the field. I already gave that he out-athletes people. He’s the Mario Cristobal of baseball.
If I can’t have another Hall of Fame coach (which, let’s be honest, is unlikely), I’ll take one of the best recruiters in the country.
Hard to say, he’s not as upfront about what he does as some coaches. Things I like.
1) Not afraid to change up orders and players to find the best options in the early season. Let’s guys play even if they are young.
2) Has a long term view on development. All these shitty outings by new pitchers and bad games for young players will play dividends down the road and in future seasons. Verberg may be the only one I am worried won’t improve.
3) Getting more vocal with Blue. I feel he picks the right moments to make his case this year. Last year was sketchy at best.
4) He seems to learn. I don’t feel the same analytics rage I did other seasons with pitching matchups.
5) Players seem to like him and respond to him. Idk if he is the best in game motivator or whatever but it seems like guys develop and feel like the get a square deal.
6) He’s real fucking good at spotting catcher talent. Logan and Smith sharing duties is a cheat code.
In 3 years he’s reloaded with top notch talent. 1 game from supers last year. On track for top 16 seed this year. Offense is elite. Aggressive on base pads. Pitching hung with excellent Stanford team that is beginning to gel. I still believe Stanford is top of P12 at year end. Arizona, Beavs, UCLA and Ducks are all next tier. The key to this year’s team revolves around pitching progression with young talented staff. Remember how long it took Abel to figure it out? Luke H, Ben W… there’s a long list of Beav legends that struggled early under Casey. Some seasons we didn’t make post season. Can you believe Casey didn’t get the team to the post season in 2016 with that roster?… granted that was the biggest NCAA snub ever but Casey lost a lot of big games and series over the years. I’m extremely happy with Mitch and the program even though I saw some warts during the post season last year. He’s not perfect but he’s growing and evolving at high level while maintaining a great tradition. I’m more confident than ever that Mitch is destined to get the Beavs back to Omaha in next 3 years.
“Mario Cristobal of baseball”… Joke right? otherwise you’ve lost all credibility with this weak sauce statement. Go ahead and make your case… I think I have a pretty good idea of where you’d try to draw parallels to support your argument. So predictable. This should be fun:-)
It’s interesting to think people think baseball is just an athletes sport. Football and basketball, I would agree you can get by when your a superior athlete. Baseball is one of those sports that is more skill based. You’ll see more non-athletic guys succeed in baseball then either basketball and football and it’s not even close. There are certain positions (Pitcher, Catcher, 1st Base), where you don’t need to be very fast. That’s because it’s more of a mental and skill game than anything. This especially becomes apparent at the college level. Obviously a lot of baseball players are extremely athletic but it’s not a requirement like other sports.
Good recruiter, meh coach. As already stated.
I haven’t made up my mind on him contrary to statements above. Remaining open. But incoming data is not impressive! People like having a former Beav and former player as coach, and it’s biasing their reality big time.
Who cares. If this wasn’t Angry’s blog, no one would spend this much time worrying about his one opinion. Let’s get some wins this week!
Can we see that data analysis? Pretty sure we are in top 25 of loads of data.
That’s what happens when you beat up on inferior atheletes. Beavs have a 32 RPI which is middle of the PAC. Superior athletes vs bad teams. This is why I got more Bearish on Mitch after losing 2 of 3 to Stanford. Finally a decent team with a higher RPI, and we saw what happened…
Good recruiter, bad coach, until he proves otherwise, and proving otherwise means beating good teams consistently, preferably with smart coaching/managing.
That’s a small sample size and two games lost/won on incredibly thin margins. I don’t think you can conclude much from just that series.
Which is why I’m trying to stay open-minded, but it’s not a positive no matter how you spin it.
When I watch this team I see superior recruits who care most about going pro who are beating up on inferior athletes. From a coaching standpoint, I see a lot of vanilla decision making and even some poor decision making. That’s what I see. Until that changes my opinion can’t change.
Mitchy went 2-0 against Gonzaga who is currently #9 in RPI. So there’s that…
Huh. Interesting take. Makes me wonder how many games you’ve actually watched. Just doesn’t seem like an informed opinion based on what I’ve personally witnessed. Over the years I’ve generally agreed or appreciated your take on various topics. They usually seem reasonable and informed but your Mitch take just seems provocative more than anything.
I’ll never come around on Tinkle, plenty of data points for wanting him to move on.
As for Mitch, I’ll reserve any thoughts because he hasn’t had the time to fail or succeed. He has at least adjusted the approach with line-ups, strategy and pitching rotations which all seem to be an improvement from year 1. My guess is he had a top-loaded team of Casey guys who weren’t the players or leaders that Madrigal/Grenier were and they lingered for a while in the program. Caham now has a roster with nearly all of his guys, so we will see how it goes now.
What do people think the most coach driven data is in baseball? The one is out solidly on coaching and development is errors. Pitching wise freebases seems obvious.
Good question.
Errors may be top of the list, batter (not pitcher) k:bb is up there too.
Then, there is one some may question………..team G.P.A.
Not sure about GPA but we’re top 5 in errors.
Any idea what’s going on with Demarcus Houston? I thought his recruiting had taken off and I see him excited about visiting Idaho and Eastern Washington. Didn’t he visit Notre Dame at one point?
Regarding Beav sports, I would sure the hell would rather be 13 games over .500 than 25 freaking games under .500! That being said Beav baseball has been a little weird, lots of blowout wins and then some games that they should have won if they had a decent bullpen. 23-4 was actually achievable instead of the current 20-7.
Plenty of close wins, too, though. I maintain that they are who we thought they were. Does anyone here really think they’re a top 10 team nationally?
At this moment they are not a top 10 team but if the offense is as good as it seems than they have the potential. Now with Pfennings, Mundt, and Frisch healthy I think it would be a no brainer. This would easily be a top 10 team. Unfortunately, that isn’t the reality. They have exceeded my expectations, especially with the bad injury luck. I mean TJ Wheeler was on fire, I am surprised that no one has mentioned that. Even with all the bad luck we’ve won games.
Agree 100%. This team is a good not great team. Top 16 probably although there are some vastly overrated teams in SEC and ACC with great records because of weak midweek competition. P12 and west coast baseball is better than the polls and rpi give credit for.
Live stream of tonight’s game: https://wccsports.com/watch/?sid=482103
Made it out to Hillsboro in time to see at least a few innings tonight. 5:30 start is lame for people who have to commute after work
Hunter with an efficient 3.1 pitches per out tonight. Really developing into a decent contact pitcher.
Melton knocks one foul into a dog park, dog chases it down.
I may have missed this conversation already but Taylor Jones in the portal now? We might need to have co-ed basketball next season…not sure we have starting 5’s on either side.
An investigation needs to start on Rueck. What is going on here? Any funny business? Or is he just losing it?
It is concerning, but I guess it’s the state of college athletics now. It’s frustrating because Rueck had them so close to being elite. So much for “family”.
He says “men need to win to be happy, women need to be happy to win”. The women are not happy.
You’ve got the quote right; still it’s hard to know what’s going on. After all, it took a year or so to learn of the medical situation likely involved in Sasha Goforth moving home.
Still a big disappointment to lose Jones.
Or maybe they just aren’t getting paid? Y’all forget this NIL bullshit? That’s “unregulated”???
Welcome to the world of college athletics now.
Are there enough people with enough emotional investment in women’s basketball that NIL money is that significant there?
Investigation? I don’t know if it’s talent or coaching but imo, Rueck’s teams are slow and deliberate compared to other wbb teams I’ve watched. Beavs often use the first half of the shot clock getting to the perimeter, then passing the ball around for a few seconds. Not many transition baskets, long or quick passes.
Talia Von Oelhoffen tweets that she is staying.
Interesting, seems we heard the same from a nike gal after they had several enter the portal (Paopao?).
https://twitter.com/TaliaVono
I remember being bummed after the final 4 run because it was clearly the pinnacle and fell short. People told me that was a bad take and everything was looking up…
Final 4’s are SO difficult to make. Duke’s men’s team has made 5 since 2000. It just doesn’t happen much even for the best of the best.
Even the juggernaut 20-21 Oregon State men’s team couldn’t make it!
If anyone thinks AB has been hard on Beavs Baseball, might want to check “Angry Trees” after Stanford gets kicked around by St Marys’ 8-1. RPI 196!
Or maybe “Angry Wildcats”; they fall to ASU 10-6.
Even “Angry Bruins”; having a battle vs Loyola Marymount, taking 11 innings to get a 1 run win vs RPI 185!
And just think: we lost our home series against Stanford! We must be terrible.
Zags blanked WSU and GCU beat #4 TTech. Midweek issues abound!
Zags topping WSU is no surprise, is it?
Getting completely slapped is a bit harsh.
True
A little perspective on the WBB-transfer portal fears, Daschel tweets:
“185 players from Power 5 schools in the WBB transfer portal from this year. OSU isn’t even in the top half of the Pac-12 when it comes to the number of transfers from this season.”
Yes, but who cares about the other teams. SR had sold this program as a true “family” atmosphere. Now the kids are choosing to get adopted.
This whole transfer portal thing is going to kill my interest in college sports.
We can’t know what’s going on, but I’m thinking Rueck can’t be too pleased, a lot of time/resources invested in her rehab, and then she leaves? Also, I could do without the tearful, soul-searching tweets, say goodbye privately, and then just move on.
‘I could do without the tearful, soul-searching tweets.’ They are pious form letters. Re: Taylor Jones. I don’t recall how she injured her shoulder – playing or practicing for the Beavs? Was she on scholarship and using OSU facilities during her rehab?
BG, it’s not about caring about other teams. It’s that these numbers (if accurate) indicate that Beavs heading for the portal doesn’t point to a SR problem.
There are other, more likely, places to look for an explanation: homesick, playing time, health, boyfriend, academics, $…………..
Or maybe there’s a toxic environment at more than half the PAC WBB teams. LOL
Does The Oregonian specialize in flip, smarmy journalists? Daschel seems to be picking up where Nemec left off.
That’s been Daschel for years
I feel like Mitch has gotten better every year. He came in and ran the club like a minor league club. The inside pitching and hit batters was Mitch and Dorman coaching like they had pitchers that were MLB quality, they have backed off that and adjusted. Mitch seems to be slowly adapting to the college game, maybe a more college ready coach would have been better? Maybe, but if Mitch keeps improving I can see him being a top college coach.
Pat Casey was a legend, but it took him time too. I also think people fail to recognize the flukey nature of baseball. Sometimes the difference between a line drive RBI and a line drive double play is just a couple inches from the shortstops glove. Even his last championship would have never been without a flukey drop. And I don’t mean to take away from Casey, he deserves every accolade sent his way. But to me the greatness of Casey was having the team in the playoffs almost every year so they had a chance to get lucky and win it. Sure some people rise to the moment and some people crumple under pressure more or less than others, but it is hard to judge those moment because sample size is so small. I mean even Casey had some blunders, thinking that LSU, Greg Street game as an example.
So I guess my long rant comes down to I still think Canham can be that guy, I don’t think he is there yet but the steady improvement makes me think he will grow into the role.
Does anyone remember the baseball recruit from our most recent class who was state POY in WA and had some ridiculous stats like a 0 ERA? Was that the prior year? I’m having a hard time finding him. Did he leave the program?
David Grewe 3 appearances and a 24 ERA
Yeahhh. He’s having a rough time adapting for sure. Jorge Reyes was his high school coach. Hoping another year in the system helps him out but he may be done this season.
Just a freshman. He can adjust.
This year or next year? That’s the key. Can these back of the bullpen guys grow during this year or will every outing come with growing pains?
I’m sure it will be a mix. Of new comers here’s the ones I think will be contributing heavily this post season.
Kmatz (duh), Ferrer (no shit), Carpenter (pretty obvious), Hibbard (cross your fingers), and Boisvert (just getting up to speed).
I think Grewe, Quinn, and Case probably need some seasoning.
Van Larsen, Stuhr, and Cole haven’t pitched yet this year. I think Van Larsen atleast is injured.
I heard Cope got booted for behavior. Haven’t seen a 7’ dude in the bullpen at all.
Cope heard there were spots opening up on the basketball team. More playing time for him there.
GCU up 5-2 today on TTech. Our split midweek looks much better.
I was just thinking…imagine if Riley we’re still head coach in the age of NIL?
Golly, any bike makers wanna sponsor a QB?
“I have a neat NIL deal for ya.”
Probably an NIL from a bike helmet maker. Or bell. Ching Ching!!!!
‘Nutcase’ would appropriate
GCU sweeps #4 TTech
Good for the ol RPI
OT:
Nucor Corp along with BitCoin have been mentioned here; looks like Nucor has been the better performer lately.
How about Portland based NuScale Power picking up a $15mil investment from Nucor to move along it’s small modular reactor business.
Bet angry and our own NulearBeaver are already all over this.
I bought Nucor May 2020 during the Covid crash. $41. Killer investment! The funny thing is it’s still super cheap.
You got in for significantly less than I. Still, I’m happy with what I got.
Now, as for BitCoin………hmmmm
What’s wrong with Bitcoin?
Got in wrong.
Ah. Just hold it.
I don’t invest in nuclear. Too painful when the inevitable happens over and over.
15 million is really not much money in this case, doesn’t even cover the expenses of license application.
NuScale also picked up $110 million from a Japanese investor.
https://www.oregonlive.com/business/2022/04/japanese-government-fund-buys-110-million-stake-in-portland-nuclear-power-company-nuscale.html
Question is: will they ever build in the United States? Probably not
If they don’t their entire model is screwed. It’s completely leveraged towards US and Canada. China and other competitors are going to box them out of most global markets.
NuScale has been talking to Poland, South Africa, Ukraine, and Romania about deploying their reactors.
Problem is that Poland and Romania are probably going to sign a deal with Canada for GE’s new reactor (which looks more economical and safer) and South Africa will sign with Russia. Ukraine was talking to Holtec about a NuScale-similar design but that may not be happening anymore.
Japan is another option but they’re going to go through a deep recession soon.
Yup. A lot of that is just looking for easier regulatory environments to prove the technology than really looking for a market. If they get US approval they will have a complete lock on all of North America. That said how lucrative that is depends on the 30 year anti-nuke media cycle.
It’s been 10 years since Fukushima ended my career in Nuke before it even started.
Have you read Apocalypse Never? I just finished it and it talks about the history of the US backlash against nuclear energy. It’s pretty nuts.
Decline and Fail by Stoler is another great book. Talks about WHOOPS in Washington, and how the stagflation crisis and rising interest rates killed utilities’ desire to take out huge loans in the 80’s.
The US is also incapable of creating their own domestic nuclear supply chain. Westinghouse tried and failed miserably about a decade ago.
I have not but I know the history very well. When green peace takes donations from fossil fuel industry you know your screwed.
No idea what the transfer news is that Daschel talking about for, but given that he’s mostly been talking about Basketball transfers lately, makes me think its another defection.
On the JT Daniels front, I was comparing the number of Beaver players who follow him currently against the 5 or so who did before he entered the portal.
The list of players who follow as of today vs a few months ago has grown quite a bit.

Wow that’s a ton more followers for sure. Agree that “monotone” Hot Nick is probably gonna mention another basketball transfer.
Definitely going to be basketball transfer news.
Now watch, it will be the entire 2022 wbb class we signed, transferring before actually hitting campus
Says it’s basketball and possibly multiple. There’s gonna be nobody left.
I can only think of a few guys you would really want to keep from a 3-win team.
Maybe the MBB is going to say they’re trannies and transfer to the WBB team.
Modern problems, modern solutions.
That’s thinking outside the box
They’d probably still get their asses whipped half the time.
D1 baseball has a regional projections out…..
Has Arizona (5) and UCLA (8) as national seeds. Agree with UA. UCLA should not be a national seed as of right now. But they do have some quality wins. They certainly could be a national seed.
Has the Beavs hosting a regional. Having Maryland and Tulane in Corvallis would be some fun matchups. Lots of ball still to be played.
Also has Gonzaga hosting a regional…..
https://d1baseball.com/projections/midseason-report-field-of-64-projections/
From the piece “…Arizona and UCLA narrowly edged out Oregon State for a top eight seed.”
Big opportunity for Mitch, having AZ and UCLA as the last two series on the schedule; dare we hope Pfennigs is in top form by then? Bullpen sorted out by then?
First things first though; lot of ball yet to play.
It’s a basketball transfer, guard Tre Williams.
Per the O, “With Williams’ departure, only five players from the Beavers’ 3-28 squad are expected to return next season. They are forwards Rodrigue Andela and Ahmad Rand, guards Dexter Akanno and Glenn Taylor Jr. and center Chol Marial. OSU has commitments from five high school recruits for the upcoming season.”
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/04/oregon-state-guard-tre-williams-heads-for-ncaa-transfer-portal.html
Also said its likely not the last announcement today
So Tinkle’s solution is to clear the program of all coaches except himself and all players except those who didn’t play last year?
Leadership at its weakest…he can leave anytime, maybe the issue has been looking at him in the mirror all along.
So it would be good leadership to keep guys who were clearly underperforming and were a disruptive presence in the locker room?
Not saying Tinkle should stay, but getting rid guys who were net negatives at least gives us the chance to bring in someone else who could be better. New assistants will have new relationships that could bear fruit.
Might as well take a few shots in the dark after only winning 3 games and having little to build on.
I could care less if Tinkle stays or he goes. I will say, everyone is figuring out how to utilize the portal, coaches included. Some are going to get burned with getting bad recommendations. Anyone here work in an industry where they restart each year with a new crew or group? That’s what it seems like college sports, especially basketball will be turning into since just a few guys can really affect the culture and success level. It’s like what Kentucky had been doing for years with all of the one and dones.
Tre was a POS and brought no talent to overcome his terrible attitude and defiance. Just an awful shooter who couldn’t even make free throws (here or at Minnesota). He wasnt hurt at the end of the year. But he refused to play and just claimed he was hurt. Glad he’s gone. But that being said, Tinkle never gave him any consequences for his bad behavior. I heard he even cussed out an assistant during a film session. And nothing happened to him
Sure but he has created his own problems by not having good instincts, evaluators, connections in the first place. He was gravy training the kids for 6 years and now it is all on him so he flails around until the 2028 contract is expired.
It isn’t an easy task to start over multiple times. But the starting over may be revealing some long-term issues he has as a coach. I get it that Rueck is also having the portal issues, but Tinkle has had them since his 1st year.
Kinda hinted at the next departure in the article… left off Isaiah Johnson from the returnees
Is it weird that when I read those five names I got kind of hopeful?
Did y’all see that Steven Kwan is starting for the Guardians on Opening Day??? An O Stater starting for my favorite MLB baseball team! Now we are talking.
Kwan’s first hit
https://mobile.twitter.com/MLBPipeline/status/1512202558747553811?cxt=HHwWpsCt6eKNtvwpAAAA
2 walks, a hit and a strike out. Pretty good OBP so far!
Portal is causing players to make statements that they’re NOT leaving. Wild times
Any chance at Tevita Pome’e coming to the Beavs? I see he announces tomorrow.
He said Utah was his dream offer.
Well maybe we can finish second.
We are great at that hahaha. Maybe he will come over in 2 years for playing time.
I guess we finished third because he committed to the ducks. Utah whoops them twice last year and still can’t overcome their NIL and fancy clothes.
Nemec just jizzed in his sweatpants
(His own pants, just so we’re clear)
Underrated clarification.
On the plus side, his HS coach is a Beav alum.
Brady Huchingson leaves team and Jake Blair moves to Receiver… Quarterback movement gives us 5 for the year and hopefully room for one more
Both walk-ons so probably meaningless but worth keeping an eye on
When a good chunk of the women’s and men’s hoop squads leave the program – one being a “successful” program, and the other being a grease fire – I’d like to think someone in the AD’s office is paying attention and asking questions. I remember when it appeared the administration had no clue what was going on under the previous women’s hoop coach.
OT: Apparently 5 teams – Cowboys, Eagles, Packers, Jets, and Saints – asking about Brandin Cooks via trade. Apparently Houston was seeking a second round choice, which is what they gave for Cooks, and they may have to lower that asking price
Cooks is set to make $12.5M in 2022, then becomes an unrestricted free agent after that.
And now reports are that Texans resign Cooks to two year deal worth almost $20M/year. “Cooks is entering the final season of a five-year, $81 million contract that he signed while with the Rams in 2018.”
Hell of a deal for Houston when you look at other WR deals. Guess Cooks is paid less due to injury concerns?
I suspect there’s concerns about his concussion history.
He’s about the same age, build and speed as Tyreek Hill isn’t he? I thought Cooks would have thrived at KC if they traded for him…but young fast WRs in their rookie contracts can be had for less.
If he stays healthy, looks like Cooks could top $100M in career earnings. Pretty insane.
Anyone else ready for another year of disappointment from the Mariners? I’ll be 42 this year. Seems like studies should be done on people that grew up during the 28 year Beaver football drought and are also Mariners fans. I can’t even feel pain. Lol
I am, was a fan of Griffey right away as a kid, along with all of the 90s greats, and I was 10 years old in 95′ when they went to the ALCS. Been a massive fan ever since, although I have to admit I generally checkout by end of May most seasons due to them sucking. Last year as fun though. Cautiously optimistic for this season, being a sucker fan again.
There is really no excuse for the Mariners to have fewer playoff appearances than the A’s.
IIRC the M’s have the worst payroll/winning percentage ratio in the MLB in the last two decades.
Yeah, griffey was my favorite athlete as a kid. Road trips to the kingdome hold a special place in my heart.
Creekwater, The GM has completely turned this team around. This might not be the year because the AL West is so tough but they have a shot at the playoffs depending how their young guys play. They were two games away last year.
If you haven’t looked up Julio Rodriguez than you are missing out. He will compete for rookie of the year and IMO will likely win.
They added a cy young winner in Robbie Ray. Logan Gilbert has completely changed his repertoire, expect a breakout season from him.
They haven’t overpaid for anyone and are building the team the right way. If you remember the Royals run they followed that blueprint. They went from one the worst farm systems to a top 3 farm system. For the first time since 2001 I am excited about the direction of the club.
I think a lot of folks stopped following the Mariners for good reason, now might be the time to follow them again.
I’m a little skeptical on Ray but hope he holds form. I live in Phx and he lacked consistency. Was good 1 year, pretty bad the next. They weren’t too sad to see him leave but hopefully he’s solid. M’s have always seemed lacking in pitching. Have had some really good ace’s over the years but day 2 and later were typically lacking.
Last year gave some hope for sure but the pitching once again the weak spot. Fun for fans since they’ve typically preferred to go for offense and hope to outscore but time has consistently shown that good pitching is better than good hitting. They always seem to start good then fizzle out 2 months into the season. Haniger starting off with a 2 run Homer in the 1st today though!
I think even if he isn’t in the cy young form, just having consistency will be huge. Like you said we didn’t have many good starters last year. The bullpen was lights out, and now we have a lot more weapons than we did even last year. The starting 5 is solid this year:
1. Robbie Ray
2. Marco Gonzales
3. Logan Gilbert
4. Chris Flexen
5. Matt Brash
Brash looked amazing in spring training but he’s young.
It was interesting, last year the pitching was the strength lol. I know its hard to believe. The offense batted .222 for the season and they still won 90 games. They only had 4 starters most of the year. The bullpen was good and we’ve added some great arms this year.
I see improvements across the roster and if they get Kyle Lewis back they’ll be loaded in the outfield. Fingers crossed that it all pans out.
M’s win it 2-1. Had to hold my breath, the last out was on the warning track. Dude even flipped his bat lol.
Yeah, their batting averages were pretty dismal. Remember watching in Sept vs Boston who had most of their order at .300 and the Mariners had like 1 or 2. Lol. Always good to start the season with a W!
OT: FR RB Martinez apparently impressive in practice thus far:
“One of the spring standouts is freshman running back Damien Martinez. The 6-foot, 228-pound Texan has been a beast in team drills. Martinez has shown power to break tackles, and speed to run away from defenders.
Interestingly, Martinez wears No. 6, the same number worn by former Beaver running back Jermar Jefferson. Could Martinez become the first true freshman running back to start since Jefferson did in 2018?
“He’s in the mix. He is. He’s still learning, but I’ve been impressed with the short amount of time he’s been here,” Smith said. “It’s not just his physical skill set, but his ability to understand the playbook and be in the right spot.”
It may come down to Martinez or redshirt junior Deshaun Fenwick as the starter, though there’s a new shooter come August in Georgia Tech transfer Jamious Griffin.”
This is no surprise. His high school numbers are absolutely absurd in a good division. Lots of us have had this guy as a possible starter for over a year now. He’s got that rare mix of speed and power.
Yeah he was way underrated as a 3-star. Definitely some Beaver bias there. Voted as the top player in the DFW area playing in the top division. Basically one of the top HS performers in all of Texas. If you look at the list of guys that have won that award, they’re almost all future NFL players.
OSU Wrestling Coach Chris Pendleton selected as PAC Coach of the Year. Notice the wrestling team eschews the chain saw in favor of a pair of axes…
https://osubeavers.com/news/2022/4/5/wrestling-chris-pendleton-named-pac-12-coach-of-the-year.aspx
“Chop wood. Carry Water.” > “Row the Boat?”
I do like that logo. The crossed axes could/should be incorporated into other marketing.
As a former wrestler who went to OSU wrestling matches in middle/high school it’s awesome to see them getting national success again. Some incredible athletes over the years and what Pendleton has done in 2 years is pretty stellar. Some were saying he should’ve been the national coach of the year.
Man, did you guys see Kwan’s spring numbers? 15-32(.469) 1.031 OPS and not a single strikeout to speak of. With his 1 hit, 2 walk performance yesterday, he could be their leadoff hitter very soon.
The broadcast comments during his first hit were nice to hear. They were referring to him playing with “Nicky 2 strikes”. My first thought when I hear “Guardians” was he was playing on a triple a team. No more Indians.
Taya corosdale was the other xfer portal Daschel was referring too.
Read that Taya was a 5* recruit when she came to OSU?
(Just checked, ESPN had her as 26th overall player in 2017 class)
But Alliyah, who came in the same class, was a 4* and down in the mid 60’s overall?
It’s unfortunate that she’s leaving but I thought it was her last season anyway so I guess I had already considered her gone.
No she’s never been good. Addition by subtraction. Losing Jones and Brown is where it’ll hurt
Think her experience alone would’ve been worth having back though. Team is going to be so young. I mean, Talia is gonna be the “old” player and is technically entering sophomore season right? Not sure how that works since she played like a 1/4 season before that but regardless this team is going to be super young and even getting experienced players from the portal isn’t quite the same as having that experience coming from time sp3nt within the program. Both men and women’s hoops will be interesting to say the least.
Talia will be a true soph next year since 2020 didnt count for everybody
But, the team will be significantly less hot.
What kind of media availability will Barnes or SR have in regards to the state of the WBB program. This is a stark and sudden change for what has been known as a very tight knit group.
Maybe it is related to a recent move toward a more national recruiting program, as opposed to a more regional focus. Rueck’s best teams seemed to be rooted in players from Oregon or nearby states/provinces (with a few internationals added in)
Curious about that too.
“We are (a dysfunctional) family” doesn’t have the same ring to it…
I’m not a big MLB guy and have only seen 4 games in person(2 Mariners and 2 Giants games)
If I were to take in a game this Summer, which west coast team has the best stadium atmosphere to check out?
Nothing east of Denver
Giants have a great stadium/game day atmosphere. Angels don’t have a beautiful stadium like the Giants, but a good game day atmosphere and Mike Trout and Ohtani.
But the Giants have Matt Boyd so….
Yes, Giant’s ballpark is impressive. I’ve been to a few A’s games at the Coliseum. This may sound weird, but I enjoyed the games because of the atmosphere and one can get pretty close to the action. The area is sketchy as hell. Mariners was meh. Never been further south in California. Everyone should do Wrigley once for the atmosphere if you get to that part of the country.
Dodger stadium is one to visit. Nothing real fancy about it but a good place to watch baseball.
Petco is one of the best parks in the mlb. Always a good time there.
Just have to remember to not wear my Beaver gear to Dodger stadium in case somebody mistakes me for a Giants fan and murders me in the parking lot
Been to all six standouts out west. Personal preference only based on the Stadium itself:
1) Dodger Stadium – try to catch it when it is at capacity since it is the largest baseball stadium. Great atmosphere and much more history than any other stadium out west. Getting in and out is a pain though.
2) Petco Park. Nice combination of old and new there. Good sight lines in most areas of the park. Plus, it is located in the heart of downtown (stay downtown if you can) and it next to the Gaslamp Quarters so plenty of food and drink choices are available before and after the game.
3) Oracle Park. Sits right on the Bay. Good and drinks choices are some of the best I have seen in a stadium. Nice views from most parts of the park. Can get quite chilly during night games (but nowhere as bad as the old Candlestick).
4) Coors Field. Had an old retro feel to the stadium although it is showing some age now. Being located in downtown also helps.
5) Angels Stadium. The stadium itself is fine but it really doesn’t have much character. At least, it is close by some other tourist attractions since you are already in that neighborhood. Weather is always good there for a game.
6) T-Mobile Park. I don’t really care much for the park itself. Maybe I have been a few too many times but nothing really interesting in my opinion.
7) Chase Field. Terrible. Avoid at all cost unless you want to see a particular player that day.
I’m Going to the giants game tomorrow
Check out the schedules and hit ’em all. San Diego to LA. SF and Oakland (day games are best) – and Seattle whenever. Arizona’s stadium feels like watching baseball in a Costco. And if you are on a budget – Hillsboro Hops games are fun.
We do frequent the Hops games and my kids really like it there. Nice little ballpark and they like roaming the outfield and harassing the bullpens for autographs/balls.
Havent dont the Pickles much yet
Yeah, Phx resident here. Chase field is not an amazing place to watch ball. If you want to get in a pool to watch baseball then by all means swing by and catch a game but otherwise you can skip adding it as a venue IMO. If you go to Pittsburgh for any reason, PNC Park is a great place to watch a game. Day or night.
That 3 rivers area in Pittsburgh is pretty nice in the Summer. Never seen a game there though
Yeah, the point is great. Lived in Pgh from 2011-2015. Nice place but the wife prefers AZ weather over Pitt weather so 4 years was th3 max. Lol
I live in the Burg and it is a great place to watch a game. The product isn’t great but the park is nice and the family are actually pretty good. They are used to seeing lots of opposing fans and they welcome them.
Small ball!
Dernedde lays down a safety squeeze, Guerra comes in from 3rd………2-0 Beavs. Nice see those two implement what Mitch has been preaching.
t2 still batting.
4-0 Beavs through 2.5. Their pitcher only gave up 1 hit to us last year. This year he’s done after 2 innings.
Hjerpe is dealing also. Could be a rough night for USC if they don’t get him out quick.
27 pitches through 2 full for Hjerpe; 2 K’s, 1 HBP, 1 H
He may go 6+
Our bullpen is pretty rested be cool if we could save Sebby and let Brown close the last two if he can go 7.
M5, 4-0 Beavs. 8 LOB in 5 innings for Good Guys.
Hjerpe just doing work. 25K in the last 12 innings
t6, top of the order, be nice to see some runs.
Cooper gives up two hits in the b6 but still is averaging 14 pitches/inning.
He’s really something. Have we had a strike out guy this dominant?
Dorman makes the right move, pulls Cooper for Sebby with two on and nobody out in the b7; still 4-0 Beavs
Cooper gave up 3 hits and a HBP in the last 1+ innings.
ADD: Told ya! Sebby uses just 4 pitches to retire the side.
Would have liked to keep him back but if he can close the game then that’s alright. He’s our most reliable pure bullpen guy of late.
Nice to see Dukart with a clutch triple. If that guy was a reliable bat he would be an every game starter.
Confidence builder, two out bases loaded triple for Dukart. 8-0 Beavs…….er 9-0 as Meckler singles him in.
Wow, Dukart wants his starting job back. Huge hit and an amazing barehand and throw out at 3rd.
If only he could get on base reliably
Another smart move by Dorman? Brings in Boisvert for experience and to save Sebby for later in the series?
Too many “knocks” given up by Sebby
Yeah, but little doubt he’d have been able to finish, big lead will do that for ya.
Just making fun of the idiot announcer calling hits….knocks!
Oh, gotcha. I stuck with Parker, didn’t listen to the SC guy much.
You have heard of “base knocks”?
Common baseball term
Boisvert to close is exceedingly interesting. That could be a good spot for him if he finds his stuff.
From D1, under the heading: “Beavers remain at top of the Pac”
Although both No. 11 Arizona and No. 15 UCLA are ahead of Oregon State in the Pac-12 standings, the fifth-ranked Beavers continue to be the team to be out west with a 9-1 win over USC.
Hjerpe got the job done once more…Hjerpe now has a 77-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 47 2/3 innings and a 1.70 ERA.
In other Pac-12 action, Arizona lost a game in the standings after Washington State got the best of the Wildcats, 11-5.
Keep a close eye on Stanford whose resurgent ways continue after beating Arizona State, 8-0. …the Cardinal have now won six of their last seven Pac-12 contests.
OT: I didn’t notice in 2020 provisions were made for schools to provide academic bonuses to athletes:
“Just 22 of 130 FBS-level schools have put a plan in place to provide academic bonus payments to student-athletes with good grades, according to ESPN.
In August 2020, the NCAA began allowing schools to pay up to $5,980 per year to athletes who performed well in school. This was based on the federal judge’s mandate that year, then confirmed by the Supreme Court in June 2021 during the NCAA v. Alston case. The cash amount is equal to the amount that athletes can earn based on athletic performance as well.
The 21 schools who said they will be providing the academic bonus are as follows: Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa State, Kentucky, LSU, Miami, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St., Ole Miss, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, Washington and Wisconsin.
Nine of these schools are in the country’s richest conference, the SEC. Georgia is the only school in the conference to be undecided about its plans.
Based on the survey, 34 schools said they haven’t decided if or when they will implement the bonuses, while 20 said they will not use the bonuses this year but plan to in the future. 15 said they have no plans to implement the bonuses and 10 did not provide any info on existing plans.
The academic bonuses will reach up to $6 million for certain programs, per ESPN.
https://www.si.com/college/2022/04/06/ncaa-academic-bonus-21-schools-sec
Calculated risk. Some teams like oregon wont have many players eligible for bonuses anyway
Nifty dig, NB
Dam, 2 on and no outs and get nuthin. Logan with a nice bunt to move runners to 2nd and 3rd for the 1st out. Weak grounder to 1st couldn’t score and then Dukart with a strike out. Bottom 4…tied at 1.
Bases juiced with 1 out get a sac fly from Forrester. 2-1 beavs going to 6th. Kmatz been dealing today. Be nice to get him another few insurance runs.
Brown shuts it down to clinch the series win.
Nice to see a pitcher get a save in a spot like that. Clutch double play ball.
Especially after slipping from 0-2 to a full count
Give some love to Beav softball, they are already at 30 wins and beat Arizona yesterday for the first time since 2016 yesterday. It looks like they might be for real this season.
Win again today 3-1
Note; AZ #20; Beavs #22
Now first series win against Arizona since 2013, keeps getting better!
GreT outing for Kmatz and Brown. Ferrer back to being mortal for an afternoon
Zona lost to wsu again
Cats fall to Cougs, (again), Beavs now tied with them for 2nd in the PAC
https://www.mlb.com/video/steven-kwan-s-hustle-double?cp=MIXED&p=0&q=PlayerId%20%3D%20%5B680757%5D%20Order%20By%20Timestamp%20DESC
Love me some Kwan but I don’t know that that was real smart base running. Good to see him having early success.
Win today goes a long ways for the beavs. Makes up for the series loss vs Stanford and gets another valuable road win. Offense will have to carry the team today.
Random pitching stats (as of 4-6-22), credit to Dorman?
Walks allowed: 2nd in the PAC (UCLA is first with 74)
Wild Pitches: best in the conference with 12 (Zona has 39)
HBP: 4th in the PAC with 19 (Ariz 27, nike 40!)
Hits allowed and runs allowed: Middle of the PAC, lagging behind UCLA in both areas.
HR allowed: tied with UCLA for second
Opposing BA: seventh in PAC, UCLA first by wide margin.
What does it mean, if anything??
Varying schedules make any conclusion suspect, but…………..looks to me like the Beavs O will face it’s biggest test in the final series at Goss vs UCLA.
Thoughts ?
My only real thought is that all these guys are Mitch/Dorman recruits now except Verberg.
Not a Dorman guy (still) but credit when it’s due…numbers have been getting a bit better last 2 weeks. Big concern is once we get thru top 6 guys it becomes a real crap shoot and can Kmatz keep being this good as the competition gets better. USC was the “easiest” Pac opponent left on the schedule if I’m not mistaken. Seen some people say pfennings should be back next week but we’ll have to see. Wonder if his injury was/is really a recurrence from his back injury last year? Going on 2 months almost for a back strain.
I’m not a believer in Dorman either.
But zero walks issued this weekend.
Gotta give credit when it’s due. Both to him and the pitching staff.
Lineup today: Battery=AJ and Logan, Kasper DH
Softball loses 9-1. 5 errors leading to 7 unearned runs. OUCH!
Odd to see USC baseball trots out their cheerleaders on gameday. No wonder their team seems distracted.
Is that a bat in your pocket?
What’s the scoop on SC’s pitcher today….any good? Hell of a time for the Beav bats to go quiet. Seems like this team likes to keep games close, I would think they would have at least 5-6 runs by now.
Holy crap, Kwan goes 5-5, one double, scored 4 runs. Quite the first series.
The next Ichiro Suzuki?!?!
Tied at 3 b7, Trojans still up.
How can Dorman not see that Lawson isn’t right today?
Kiss ‘o Death?……Trojans bring on Toby Skpach who has given up 11 hits and 8 runs in 10 innings this year….8WP as well. Due for a career day vs Beavs??
He pitched exactly to the scouting report. Gave up a hit, walk, hit a batter and had a wild pitch.
True, as outlined above. But, Luck ‘o the Beavs would have said he comes in and is lights out.
Sebby comes on with a 7-3 lead, can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’d not object to bring Verburg in with a 2 batter leash in this spot.
Nice win today!
Guess any win is nice, especially on the road in conference. But, 6 hits seem meh; team benefited from 5 WP’s and a HBP (looked legit on replay even though not called immediately).
Hope to see better stats vs Dirtbags.
One thing for sure: Mitch promised aggressive base running to put pressure on opponents D. He delivered on that.
Dorman promised less free bases, he’s delivered on that……..no bb in the SC series, wow.
PLUS…..Bruins lost today leaving Beavs tied with Wildcats atop the league.
Yeah when I wrote that I was thinking in terms of the pitching. Nice for them to pickup the slack for the lack of hitting and get the W!
First ever sweep against USC on the road in program history.
Held them to 6 total runs.
Great week.
I’d have been happy with 2 of 3 this weekend.
That’ll do Beavs. Fantastic
The upcoming schedule is going to be tricky again for the pitching staff. Thu-sat vs long Beach st, two mid weeks vs Gonzaga, and then uw comes to town. Wouldn’t count on Pfennigs showing up anytime soon.
I think Hunter gets the start on Thursday, Hjerpe on Fri and Kmatz on Sat. Then lattery on Monday and Hunter again on Tuesday with 4 days of rest.
That way they aren’t running out of starters vs Gonzaga.
Ferrer is start capable if he isn’t used as backup. Pfenigs is supposed to be back sometime this coming week per Mitch.
I wouldn’t start Verberg.
Nice win and always good to get the sweep!
Do we think it’s worth trying Verberg in mid-week start vs late game situations? Perhaps a little less pressure? Tough match-up for mid-week games though.
I don’t think his issues are mental. Use Verberg as a pitch count doing in a game with a big lead. He can probably be a decent 5.0 ERA long relief guy right now. Put him in when the bats blow up and save the (currently) more effective arms for other days.
Mitch has achieved something Casey never did. He swept USC in LA.
That’s Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach Mitch Canham.
Hahaha! Well done sir
Insight on Kwan and Beavers’ psychological approach.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYaJDe_R6mM
First player since 1901 to reach base 12 times in his first three games. He has yet to swing and miss at a pitch either. Crazy, but he also hit .469 in spring training!
That’s unbelievable! He’s got a better batting avg right now than anyone on my slow pitch softball team. .800 through three games, that’s unbelievable!
Apparently it’s unbelievable lol
I believe the first “unbelievable” over the second unbelievable!
Olive says Beavs did not walk a USC batter in series. That’s crazy
For once Olive is correct
Credit to Richie D
Are we now keeping Mitch and Dorman? Just a bit of sarcasm for your Monday. It seems maybe even the critics on here are coming around. That is until we lose another game. Then it’ll be back to “fire Mitch, fire Dorman, fire the guy that cleans the uniforms” lol
If we drop a non-con game we should bulldoze Goss.
Finally, some levity.
Just don’t use the same demo crew they did for Reser, they might tip the grandstand into Dixon hall…and Casey’s corner will be “Casey’s Sand-volleyball court”
OT: Former UO coach Taggert, his trainer, and UO being sued for $125M fir their workouts several years ago that resulted in hospitalization of several players.
Been pretty busy these days so just poking my head in once and a while to see what is happening.
Basketball: Looks like Tinkle is down to a dribble with Davis leaving now too… are they going to have to play all low star freshmen next season?
Football: Sounds like we got a good up and coming running back and also sounds like injury to squint eyes has opened up the QB competition.
Baseball: Just happy they beat out the So Cal rubbers… looks like the team is generally good.
Did I miss anything?
Coach “Dribble” ha!
Nolan injury might make the situation look more inviting to Daniels? I guess that’s the possible silver lining.
What is the injury?
Remember how well Gebbia was playing before he was injured? I believe he is a better option than people are giving him credit for. Still Daniels would be nice to have and would add some serious experience to the QB room.
I do remember how “well” Gebbia was playing. He really struggled against a mediocre Washington team (11-25, 1 int 85 yards I think it was), Cal he was 12-20 147 yards with 2 int. Wazzu he was decent and started playing better against the Ducks. I also remember thinking he couldn’t get the ball down field, seemed to have a weak arm. I think the offense will be fine no matter who starts but a Daniels transfer would make the offense wide open.
I am not aware of a Chance Nolan injury and can’t find anything online regarding it. Where did you read that BeaverBill?
I think he meant the blindness.
Gotcha lol! I can’t find any reports from Saturdays practice so I was worried he got hurt then. Chance is having a good spring so far. Seems like we will actually have a stable of decent QB’s this season.
I’m not sure if he was injuried, out for a practice or what, but here is the article I read stating he was unavailable for practice:
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/04/oregon-states-offense-should-be-a-high-flyer-again-if-the-beavers-get-the-quarterback-position-right.html
Don’t know any other details and that article was published Mar. 31, 2022 so he may be back in the mix… ???
Just re-read it… he was sick, so he is probably back in the mix now.
I saw a blurb somewhere that he was out for a day but came right back.
Also saw that Nall signed with the Cowgirls.
In regards to basketball, our front court could actually be pretty good. As of now, Taylor, Rand, Andela, Marial, and Johnson are all returning. They are adding Mr. Basketball from the state of Washington (6-8 Tyler Bilodeau), as well as the Jayden Stevens from Washington who lead Gonzaga Prep pretty far in the WIAA tournament, Mississippi guard Nick Krass, who is rangy at 6’4″ and a good shooter/decent ball handler, guard Jordan Pope, and German forward Michael Rataj, who is said to be one of the better European prospects going the college route. To me it’s a matter of if these new players buy in on defense. We don’t need anything flashy at guard, we just need guards and wings who can take care of the basketball. If they lay up another stinker. Tinkle’s gotta be out.
Idk how good of a sign it is but ima take it as a good one, Florida transfer Andrew Chatfield just uploaded clips of him absolutely dominating our OT’s. Reminds me a lot of Ham with these pass rush moves, excited to see him more next season.
https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdx4Dvg4/
I learned last year that practice reports mean basically nothing. I refuse to draw any conclusions before September.
From a player on the team “Chatfield will be our best pass rusher”
Who was best last year?
Is That FR OLB practicing (Donaldson?)?
Steven Kwan already starting off his day with a BB and a Run. Sheesh…
Why are people so high on Daniels? Just the star rating? His performance has been good but not great, and it’s not like he’s a young player with room to grow.
I want Nolan. 3rd year in system.
Nolan isn’t as bad as Beaver fans say he is. He was second in the conference in QB rating at 148.29, 4th in completion percentage, and second in Yds/att.
I guess the biggest knock is the 10 interceptions he threw. But being his 3rd year, that number is all but guaranteed to go down.
I thought he was pretty good.
He’s an elite game manager. Having him at QB assumes we have an elite rushing game like we did last year. Ideally we would have someone with a higher ceiling at QB to take some pressure off the running game and defense, but he’s still way better than, say, any GA QB.
That’s a good point to remember. Luton made pretty significant progress in year two (still got lucky on a few almost-INTs but a little luck good or bad is always a factor). That was the first time Luton had the same OC for two years straight.
Now Nolan has coaching continuity plus game experience and an opportunity to make similar progress. He made some great throws @ USC, but couldn’t do it consistently in the back half of the season, or much at all.
I still think it would help Nolan (or Gebbia) if they narrowed got the best WR group on the field, narrowed it down, and built more consistency in their playing time and roles.
Partially the 5 star rating, just because we pretty much never see that in connection with OSU.
Also was a preseason Heisman front runner last season but had his year derailed with an injury.
If we could get that preseason form of Daniels, it would be great for OSU, just because he has a much better arm than anybody on the roster. But lots of “ifs” surrounding him too.
I’m in the JT Daniels camp for a couple of reasons:
1) Grass is greener- Back-up qbs are always the hope that will change the trajectory of the season, and I’ve seen plenty of Nolan/Gebbia to want a 5 star back-up to replace them
2) Daniels was a 5 star recruit, yes the star rating does have an impression, and he played at Mater Dei right? So guys know who he is too in those circles
3) Daniels has been in 2 big time programs and could very well come into OSU out of touch or be a real leader
4) He will be focused for his NFL shot and will be interested in being part of a program elevating opportunity
5) He has a reputation for downfield accuracy which Beavs need badly
6) His hair and mustache prove that he isn’t really trying to impress anyone, but may be a down to earth guy that loves playing football.
7) He was a great teammate at Georgia after losing his starting job to an injury and a walk-on.
8) I think there is a lot of upside to his arrival, and not much downside
9) He started at USC as a true freshman, under tons of pressure and lots of scrutiny, and has been in the college game for a few years, maybe landing at OSU off the radar of all the other programs would be a great fit and allow for him to just play/succeed for the first time in his career.
10) I suspect he has the typical moxie of a winner that we are waiting for in a qb but rarely see at OSU.
He enrolled early and played when he should have been a high school senior. Proof of the moxie. #5 is a huge plus.
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football-recruiting/2017/12/22/16811838/qb-recruit-jt-daniels-usc-reclassify-senior-season-mater-dei
Offer sheet, early enrollee for college ball; played in major programs, potentially better downfield passer than current options…
Not sure of his downsides. Curious about decision making, TD:INT ratio for college career.
TD:INT against the best defenses in CFB.
He didn’t lose a game at Georgia.
And yeah he could take the offense to bigger things because he can throw down field. Defenses can’t stack the box and the wrs will be happy they can go deep and not have to slow down to catch the ball.
But don’t expect him to commit to the beavs. We don’t pay enough.
I saw an interesting article about the transfer portal with Dabo Swinney being quoted a lot about his intention to not use the portal because it is a subtle admission that his guys aren’t recruiting or evaluating the right guys in the first place and it also short changes the program as a long term development for the guys they already have in place. He plans ot only use it in the case of injuries that hamper selective group depth.
It was a good read and interesting perspective form a championship coach. He predicts a large scale implosion/reset for college football within the next decade or so, saying the current systems aren’t even close to true competitive playing field for schools/divisions/conferences/schedules and it will not last very much longer.
I think it was an espn article but I can’t link to it. Perhaps someone can find it and post. It is consistent with what has been said on this blog for quite a while.
I think some control needs to be put back in. Go back to transfers having to sit out a year everywhere at the D-1 level unless their head coach is leaving.
Not just Swinney. Kirby Smart said a lot of good coaches are leaving college football for the NFL because recruiting is so all-consuming now. It’s gotten out of hand for coaching staffs.
Seems like a program that creatively uses their staff to alleviate this workload would be at an advantage. Maybe go to the pro sports model where you have a GM and HC instead of the HC having to be responsible for all personnel activities. It seems like maybe that’s what ASU was attempting to communicate in Herm’s bizarre hiring press conference.
Cole Prusia, former Beav commit who then committed to Princeton I think it was. Now is a Duck. That stings a little.
Coinbase all time low. Thoughts?
It will definitely go up or down over time.
Just buy BROS and hold it forever instead ;)
Good long term buy imo
Kwan goes 1-3 with a 3-RBI Triple, 2 BB and 2 Runs. That means he has gotten on base 3 times in all 4 games. Just insanity.
On base 15 times in his first four games. No record of it ever being done in the live-ball era (since 1901). Nice to see Kwan get his first RBIs today also.
Who the hell would down vote Kwan’s historic achievements? Quacks are even jealous of this???
Ty Cobb 2.0
Does anyone really think baseball is a top 5 team? Every poll has us there, except one that has us at #16. That seems more realistic.
Most losses have ben pretty narrow, some requiring extra innings. Consider injuries and top 10 seems reasonable so far.
In a normal year no not really. The best question is what teams should be ahead of us?
Yes based on body of work and compared to other teams. If this team’s pitching continues to improve, they could get back to Omaha and win NC. If not, they could fail to host a regional. They won’t win them all but they’re difficult to beat.
Hard to say without seeing all the other teams. But the ones who have seen a lot of college baseball, think the beavs are a top program. Polls are also what have you done lately.
Boyds world, iterative strength ratings have the beavs at #2. Rpi is #12.
Beav in OH, make a case for where the beavs should be ranked. Do some light research on the other teams and get back to us. Maybe it’s just a feeling that the beavs are overrated.
Good thoughts, Bill. And a very good suggestion for Beav in OH.
Interesting also to compare Beavs ranking in Strength of Schedule from both Boyds World and Warren Nolan:
Boyds has ’em at 13 while Nolan says 37. Anyone know if their definitions differ?
Their defense is top notch and might be the best in college baseball. Hitting is top 20. Couple of good starting pitchers(1 may be great) but the bullpen is hampered by injuries, so the pitching is around top 40 range.
I’d say they’re in that top 10-15 conversation with that combination. Pitching is good enough to keep them competitive in pretty much any series, but I dont know that it will hold up in a 4-5 game post season weekend.
Right now the Beavs DO have the best record in college baseball when it comes to errors per game.
They’re #18 in runs per game and #20 in runs allowed per game.
That thing about a 4-5 game post season weekend is the big downer for sure.
Teams in the SEC and ACC get the bulk of attention – so I’m thinking the people that watch a lot of college baseball haven’t been that impressed with what they’ve seen in the Southeast.
What are the 15 teams that should be ranked ahead of us and why? Thanks in advance.
Thats alk the thought I put into it. Based on the aggregate of those 3 categories of team stats and where OSU ranks against other NCAA teams, I estimate theyre around that 10-15 range when compared to their peers. I didnt aggregate every team and havent watched any other teams play this year other than Beavs opponents.
We havent played most of the best teams in our own conference yet. I’d imagine any of Stanford/UCLA/Arizona could still make an argument until we face them head to head(Stanford already winning their series with us)
Forgot to add oregon to that list. Plenty of opportunities to prove which in state team is better coming up though
Even if we continue to win series, I don’t think anyone can really judge if we are a top ten team until the last 3 weekends of the regular season. We’ve played one top 5 Pac-12 team and lost that series at home. Win 2 out of 3 against dux, zona and UCLA plus one of the games midweek at Oregon and there will be a strong argument for the top 10 and a national seed. Lose all 3 and I doubt you host a regional.
I live in TN and UT is unreal, every but as good as the 2018-2019 OSU teams
Couple weeks ago got an email from Johnathan Smith asking for money. Today got an email from Tinkle fundraising for team trip to Italy. I donated to JS request. I responded to Tinks asking him to fund the trip out of his $3M per year salary.
I didn’t get any of those emails and I’m a donor. What exactly did the emails say? College teams don’t need fundraisers for team trips.
Coming Soon – Dam Proud Day
Hello Beaver Men’s Basketball Friends and Family,
Thank you for your continued support of Oregon State Men’s Basketball student-athletes. The experiences you help provide during their time at Oregon State create a lasting impact post-graduation.
We are looking forward to celebrating student-athlete success and fundraising initiatives on Dam Proud Day, April 27. This year, we are fundraising for a foreign tour to Italy, in August. This is an opportunity our program gets every four years and we look forward to the unique experiences it will provide our student-athletes. Participating in a foreign tour allows our staff extra time with our team prior to departing and the chance to compete against teams of varying levels, while overseas. A foreign tour also enhances team bonding and chemistry by allowing student-athletes to experience a different culture, along with immersive educational activities. These factors will better prepare our program for the upcoming season.
We hope you join us by donating and supporting these incredible student-athletes this year on Dam Proud Day!
Thank you and Go Beavs!
Wayne Tinkle
Head Men’s Basketball Coach
I agree, kind of surprised to see the team fundraising for this trip. I’m wondering if they’re only sending these to former Beav athletes. We seem to get a lot of emails that my donor friends don’t get.
How expensive can the trip be? Is t there only like 3 guys on the team?
Good point. Maybe Hoopfest would be a better destination this summer.
The “Milan Madness” 3 on 3 FIBA tournament is a must. Sound like the Beavs may have enough players to compete!
This article leads with the Vols (didn’t realize they were being annoying showboats), but also describes “The No. 3 team is Oregon State (24-7) by D1Baseball” sweep of USC, including “…no walks over 27 innings.”
https://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Love-em-or-hate-em-record-setting-Vols-just-17073188.php
Good find. I see the Dirtbags are also mentioned due to their single win over Cal Poly that came as a result of 32 hits and 28 runs.
And, how ’bout that mention of the Vols batter who had a HR disallowed due to “…his bat was deemed illegal on a technicality and he was called out
I guess we will see is this helps, probably can’t make it worse:
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/04/oregon-state-hires-former-portland-pilots-basketball-coach-eric-reveno-as-mens-assistant.html
Is Terry Porter still looking for work?
Reveno jumps from one sinking ship at GT to another. He must prefer living in the PNW.
From “JacketsOnline”
“Sources confirmed to JOL that Reveno left the program and his goal was to get a final shot at running his own program given his ties to the West Coast, Reveno felt his best shot was to get back out there coaching again.
Reveno was the final on the court staff member of Pastner’s initial 2016-17 coaching staff.
Sounds like a vulture. Positioning himself as an Interim next year after Wayne gets the axe with the hope of leveraging that into the full-time gig.
Oregon St. now the slight favorite on On3 to nab transfer QB JT Daniels. 53 percent the Beavs, 47 percent for Mizzou.
I had no idea there was a betting market for that. Wow.
Is WVU out of the running?
I asked if these odds were updated before the visited WVU but haven’t seen a response. I did read someone raised 100k for an NIL deal for him if he attends WVU. I think he picks the Beavs if he doesn’t care about NIL deals unless he can start dating Jade Carey or something.
Did the Beavs offer Jade Carey?
Their site doesnt even list a WVU visit, so I’m guessing their prediction is somewhat outdated.
Plus when did ON3 become a thing?
And why do we need another recruiting site?
And what type of prediction is 53/47?
And why does JT Daniels look like a stand in for Val Kilmer playing Doc Holiday on the set of Tombstone?
https://www.on3.com/db/jt-daniels-68384/recruiting/
We will take those odds!

A one-hour edition of the Joe Beaver Show today discussing the hot start of Steven Kwan and the Mariners first series in Minnesota.
Also noted: Oregon State RHP Jake Pfennigs will start Thursday’s game against LBSU.
Pfennigs is expected to go 35 pitches or two innings, sounds about right.
His health could determine how deep of a postseason run the beavs could have.
RIP Gilbert Godfried, one of my favs.
Problem child RIP
Kinda strange that the Beavs starting rotation might be: Hjerpe, Kmack and Phennigs.
Consonant chaos.
Believe the plan is to start Pfennings on Thursday. Friday and Saturday will be Hjerpe and Kmatz on normal rest.
Makes sense to give Pfennings a few extra days of rest between his next start to see how his back responds.
Steven Kwan keeping it going. 1-2 a sac fly and two more walks. I wonder how long he keeps this going. It’ll eventually even out but it’s fun while it lasts. It will be a hard record to top.
What the hell is wrong with him? His average fell from .692 to .667 today?
Beavs have extremely bad luck with weather for their Spring game most years.
This weekend it’s looking like an overnight low near freezing and a high of 50, with rain.
Anybody planning to go?
I’ve got kid soccer games to attend all morning and cant make it in time. Hope Pac12 network will have more of it than the 1 or 2 series they showed last year.
Beavs are up to 12th in RPI according to D1 baseball.
Highest in the PAC-12.
Arizona dropped to 32nd with a home series loss to WSU.
Others of note…..
Gonzaga (13)
Oregon (15)
GCU (26th)
UCLA (37)
Stanford (41)
Portland (65)
UC Irvine (66)
Nevada (70)
USC (78)
Cal (86)
Utah (92)
WSU (97)
Xavier (101)
LBSU (106)
UW (112)
Really don’t wanna lose to UW or LBSU but it’s not the end of the world if they dropped one game. Split with Gonzaga. 6-2 these next two weeks and they’ll still be fine in the RPI department.
Right now the Beavs would be a top 8 national seed. Whether they deserve it or not. Lotsa ball still to be played, lots can happen.
Kwan Love: “Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan is baseball’s biggest story of the season”
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2022/04/12/cleveland-guardians-outfielder-steven-kwan-mlb-first-week/7287220001/
Fucking sweet.
Guardians????
They’re the Cleveland fucking Indians!!!
Not anymore old man. Better than the redskins new name.
Who doesn’t like the Commies of Washington DC?
They should have changed it to “Whiteskins” and put Snyder’s stupid mug on the side of their helmets. So much more appropriate.
Or the Foreskins…..appropriate for all the dickheads in that city!
And Snyder getting in deeper shit with financial shenanigans. Hopefully he doesn’t last much longer. The franchise could ditch the stupid Commanders name and really start over w/new ownership and new name.
May be old news(?) but Kipper moving from RT to RG. No big deal for him, and outs 6’6″ SO at RT. Should be a pretty good line again.
TN baseball just dropped a game to TN Tech.
Also note their extremely soft schedule gets a lot tougher the next couple weeks. They have series against Alabama, Florida and Auburn who are all ranked.
TT RPI was 130…lower than any of our opponents. Still, it’s baseball, so single game results matter less.
They have series sweeps that would be equivalent to us sweeping Nike, then Stanford twice (from an opponent RPI perspective). Still pretty dang impressive.
MBB offers Zoom Diallo, 4-star PG and #1 player in WA c/o ’24. Based on current offers, competition doesn’t seem stiff, but there’s a long way to go until signing day.
I have coached against zoom at the youth level as he’s grown up. Watched him closely the last couple years. He’ll be a Jr next year. Led his team to 4A championship this year. Will likely repeat next year. Kid is incredibly unselfish and plays the game the right way. Has ability to take over when needed. Future NBA IMO… unless he chooses Beavs. My hunch is he’ll end up at NC, Duke, Kansas, UCLA or wherever he wants to play.
JT Daniels to WVU…. So much for all of that
Wow. They’re not even in a good position, right?
At least he might get on TV before 10:00 pm EST and get some pre-draft exposure.
But they had a zero percent chance according to the On3 thing??!!!! Time to fall back in love with the current gf either Nolan or Gebbia.
We might need to keep a list of all the coulda/shoulda QB signings Smith and Lindgren have failed to land.
These are all guys who we offered and were interested in before ultimately settling on a player further down the list. I’m only adding players who showed some mutual interest and visited or planned to visit, but we still couldn’t close the deal on. I’m sure there are some names I’m forgetting.
Hank Bachmeier
Joey Yellen
Spencer Petras
Michael Johnson Jr
Brock Purdy
Paul Piferi
Cale Millen
Katin Houser
Brayden Dorman
JT Daniels
We passed on Millen because we already signed Vidlak…who promptly transferred
No surprise here
You mean a $100k NIL deal does mean something to a college kid?
He underestimated the value of that Bike Riley NIL neat deal
Yeah, so weird.
Nobody is actually surprised by this are they? It was literally *never* going to happen.
Exactly. Lucy and football….
You’d think they’d have learned by now.
On my drive into the office I had Dan Patrick Show on. His stat of the day was about Steven Kwan and called him his favorite Guardian.
Oddity in the beavs record,
7-2 in true road games
10-0 in neutral games
7-5 at home
Easily the worst home record among the top teams. Strange to be better away from Goss.
A reasonable expectation of the upcoming home stand would be 5-3. Win both weekend series and split with the zags. Would like to see a sweep in one of the weekend series to stay in the hunt for hosting supers.
Tougher SOS at home due to small sample size
Saban states future of college sports not sustainable; https://www.oregonlive.com/collegefootball/2022/04/nick-saban-current-state-of-college-football-not-sustainable.html
Anyone with half a brain saw this coming.
So our AD must not have…
Oh, you mean what I wrote in 2012 is coming true?
People with half a brain or even a full brain couldn’t see it coming back then…I think I even gave it a ten year horizon. I’ll have to go look.
Translation: “We’re getting outbid.”
Been awhile since we’ve had any guitar talk in here.
Wondering if any of you can help me identify what the make of this old acoustic model might be?
Found it at an estate sale and want to assess its value. It’s not in my possession, so all i have are a couple of pics right now.
https://postimg.cc/zHYBnczc
https://postimg.cc/PpwJvjjD
Given the width of the fretboard, the slotted headstock, and the Spanish design, I’d say that’s probably a classical guitar that’s been converted to modern tuners. It probably had friction tuners at some point. Look for any modifications around those tuners. My guess would be 1930s. Look inside the soundhole using a reverse mirror and you might find the maker’s name.
You’re guess at 1930’s era looks like it’s accurate. I just found a Regal 1930’s era parlor guitar with similar inlay detail and a similar pearl fretboard.
https://reverb.com/item/36106176-vintage-1930s-regal-pearloid-parlor-guitar-prewar
And this one has the exact same floral design.
But looks like mine is modified, as you suggested.
https://reverb.com/item/38691730-1930s-regal-decalcomania-pearloid-parlor-guitar-beauty
Nice. Regal was a decent brand. I think $600+ if it theirs. What did you pay?
The Regals you posted all have plates on the headstock with the brand. Do you see any holes suggesting it had one and fell out? If not I still think looking inside to be sure…
It’s not mine yet. It’s in an estate sale auction but there really isnt any competition for it at this point, so I’m hoping it stays under the radar a few more days.
There’s also a 6 string Orpheum No.1 banjo that looks to be 1910’s/20’s era.
I’m not a collector, but it’s hard to pass up antique intruments when I stumble across them.
Thanks for your suggestions. Hoping to get a closer look soon.
That does look very similar, but around that era there were tons of knock offs for every brand. My guess is somewhere in that soundhole the maker put his mark. That is and was common even back then. This is the type of mirror you need to see in there. Just shine a flashlight in there while looking with the mirror.

Story linked top of “page 1” is about OSU gymnast Jade Carey:
https://www.oregonlive.com/
Landing JT would’ve been nice, if for nothing else than to say we could grab a name at key position, but would his commitment have been a good thing in the longer term? If he was halfway decent he would’ve been done after 1 year and I could see where Gulbranson might then leave and Gebbia I think would be out of eligibility and all of a sudden, the qb room is Squints, Throckmorton and whoever they get in the ’23 class. We really needed a more consistent qb…didn’t need to be electric or special, just more consistent. Hopefully a healthy Gebbia brings that or maybe a local optometrist took a sponsorship deal with Squints and he’s now got contacts and is much better. Guess what I’m hanging my hat on is some improvement by the D…don’t think it’ll be a great defense but hopefully much better in 3rd/4th down and qb pressure and to continue the strong run game. Slightly more consistent qb play should translate into a few more wins. At the end of the day we can’t stroke the checks to bring in top recruits, unless Nvidia wants to start dropping a ton of cash, so we gotta be realistic here.
Looks like we have Yray’s replacement
https://twitter.com/AustinDArmond?t=9K8RX1KTMqurkD7tYGC4dg&s=09
I think Robert Cole Moore(another Texas guy) was Yray’s replacement. This guy would be more like Kendrick Van Ackeran or Tevita Lose replacement. A slightly smaller role, but still part of the recruiting staff. Must have come here on Moore’s recommendation
Gotcha. Hadn’t seen the Moore hire.
Hip, hip, Yray!
Angry: Look at the Twitter feed. Oregon State football had a visit from “Charles Brown V.” Ha!
Charlie Brown. Coach Smith the next “Lucy?”
Mariners suck again. Hope is dwindling even before their first home stand. No surprise by me but funny how many are fooled before the season starts every year.
Hope they sign Conforto, their OFs aren’t hitting for shit to start the season…neither is any other position, but still
Conforto is in free agent purgatory. Can’t be signed until after the draft, if I recall right. If he signs, the team has to give up a draft pick.
Conforto picked the wrong time to have another shitty season. Talk about inconsistency. Was it 18 million he turned down for a one year with The Mets? You’re right, if a team can wait, they won’t have to give up a pick.
Isn’t Mariner management more interested in profit than winning a world series? I thought there was some pretty damning quotes about their use of farm system? Not just ethnic and nationalistic in nature, but not wanting to pay for talent . I think ownership groups like this just string fans along, look at the bottom line, and really don’t have visions of winning it all.
Hard to say if they “suck” again after six road games. I’ll admit It ain’t looking good. The GM has been solid but unfortunately not paying for Story, Correa, or Bryant hurt them. We are going out there with a ton of young guys. Julio and Kelenic have been subpar. Adam Frazier and Jesse Winker haven’t found it, both good hitters throughout their career. It’s been cold as crap in Chicago. The White Sox are one of the better teams. I’ll hold judgement until the first home stand. Matt Brash looked lights out in his first start but the offense didn’t back him up. Robbie Ray looked like Arizona Robbie yesterday which creekwater alluded to. That’s being said you can’t really judge a team on an 8 game road trip when they play 162 games. They have to play better, we will see if they can.
True it’s too early to pass judgment but the roster doesn’t seem to be capable of competing over the course of 162. Last year was an anomaly and the team overachieved winning a lot of 1 run games. It’s the Mariners so I’m confident they won’t make the playoffs or do anything to proactively improve the team. I just struggle to see why so many folks are high in this team.
I agree if they continue to play just like this for the rest of the season. The team not improving is unlikely, IMO. The playoffs are a tall task based on the division they are in. That wasn’t the goal this year. The goal was to get these young guys feet wet and see improvement. I haven’t heard too many excited about the team as it is. They are excited about the potential. Of course that is hard to see if you are just looking at box scores. Watch some of these games and you’ll see what I mean.
Now can they fulfill that potential, that’s the big question? And as all of us Mariners, Beavers, and Trail Blazer fans know, be ready for them not to ever reach it lol
Same Teams Tango. Good choices, or maybe not actually, kinda sucks
Haha! No doubt, some days I wish I was born in LA. On second thought, no I don’t!
But hey the M’s pulled out a good win today 5-1. The weather tried to change the outcome. Would have been a shut out. The wind pushed the ball three straight times and the outfielders missed the catch.Funny to say but I think the team is looking forward to Seattle weather.
Well shit, thought he could have a massive season.
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/04/oregon-state-sophomore-receiver-zeriah-beason-leaves-program-for-ncaa-transfer-portal.html
Pretty sure this is a symptom of transfer portal and playing time. Since Zeriah came in we also brought in Harrison, Lowe, Tongue and Dunmore. It’s a very full room.
That’s my thought/hope also. We have a ton of depth at WR, my only worry is we don’t have a clear “go to” guy. I was hoping Beaton could do that.
Why would you think that? He’s been pretty terrible…
Stupid fan gut feeling haha, solid freshman year, disappointing bad sophomore year, I thought he would work his butt off this offseason now that he was humbled and bounce back. I am hoping he didn’t like where he was looking at being on the depth chart.
have any of the receivers looked good given the QB play?
No. Can we trade a couple for defensive linemen before the transfer portal deadline? Our WR’s are on favorable short term deals with low/no NIL, so would have to trade for players with similar compensation package to stay in budget.
He had a ton of potential. Good size, 4.4 speed, good blocker, practice all-star. For some reason he couldn’t translate it into game success.
He’d be my pick for transfer who will blow up somewhere else.
Addition by subtraction.
Yes exactly.
I’m hoping Tongue has made necessary improvements to see more PT at WR.
Anyone going to Spring Scrimmage this weekend? Be nice to see some impressions posted here.
I saw on an old December IG post that Tongue had surgery a few months back. Anybody know what it was for?
I think Smith said he hasnt practiced yet but theyre hoping he’ll be out there soon and lapping the competition.
You mean licking the competition.
So much for his brother transferring here…
Obviously he’s leaving to make room for JT Daniels to pull a Devon Williams and come to OSU after committing to WVU
He was better freshman year but had been getting a lot of playing time regardless of being less consistent. Guess the WR room is the deepest one we have so perhaps not as impactful as other positions but still unfortunate to lose someone with a lot of PT under their belt. Perhaps this signals that the xfers from last year have gotten better inside the scheme and he was getting passed up.
I’d rather see Irish get on the field more as well. Gould should be playing all the time. Still have to find room for Lindsey among the others that have been mentioned.
Harrison, Tongue, Dunmore, Irish, Lindsey, w-Martinez or Lowe at RB: Beavers’ version of “run-and-shoot.” Sometimes a TE out in the slot.
Call it the “Slap-and-tickle?”
“And Smith and Beavers are going slap-and-tickle, fans loving that!”
“They’ve been going up-snd-down the field in this package Bob!”
“Sure have Jim! Been some ins and outs too, but they’re scoring, and that’s what counts!”
Snippet from local news on Nick Krass, new Oregon State signee: “Krass helped lead St. Patrick to The Big House for the first time ever, averaging 25 points and 8 boards, while shooting 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three and 90 percent from the free throw line.”
Great to see an 8 rebound average from a 6’4″ guard! I like those shooting numbers as well. He is sure to see time given the current state of the team.
I think anyone signing with the Beavs will be getting playing time. Only have 5 bodies I think. Lol. But hopefully he can translate it to the college level.
If you watch his film, he isn’t exactly playing against high-level athletes, so I wouldn’t put much stock in the rebound totals.
He looks like a pure shooter who may not be a starter, but will help in the rotation. Like a less athletic Jarod Lucas.
My stock in the rebound totals is that he gives a good effort. Rebounding/Defense are effort things, and we need guys that are willing to give that 100 percent of the time. So that’s why that excites me.
Barring a late change I’ll be at the spring game for the first hour and will have a practice report
Would be nice to see the beavs offense breakout and take some pressure off Pfennigs even in limited innings today.
Long Beach is a much tougher out than their record appears. Took 2 of 3 at miss st, 2 of 3 from the zags, win over UConn and took 1 of 3 from cal poly. But they are one game under 500. Basically they play up or down to their opponents. Beat some good teams but also lose to bad teams. Beavs being a better team should expect quite a fight.
2 of 3 from Zags is pretty impressive; Beavs cannot afford to let down vs either of those two.
No Melton in today’s lineup. Anybody know why?
New thread for series?
DONE
