Zags visit Corvallis, short thread for a short series

67

A pretty good test coming for Mitch and the guys. When they squared off in Arizona to begin the season the Beavs scoring machine was the big story, plating 22 runs in the two game series. Now, with the exception of the final game vs Dirtbags, Beavs have been taking twice as many games to find 22 runs.

Ranked 11 or 12 in some polls, the Zags are certainly a “quality opponent”, a split seems acceptable.

Games both start at 5:30 on PAC12.
GO BEAVS!……………….come back Melton!

    • Yeah, I’m liking how this looks with Melton and Wheeler both back. Lots of guys who know how to put the ball in play and almost all are speedy baserunners, save for maybe Forrester.
Plus they’re all back at their usial fielding positions which should make a difference as we head to the last stretch of the season.

  1. Think they were stealing bags vs the zags in AZ as well. Must be something they see on the catcher or pitchers but no respect at all.

  2. Just throw the back of the bullpen guys now. Try to save up some arms for tomorrow and hope the offense can make the Zags go to the end of their bullpen tonight.

    • Should have Townsend, Verberg, Lattery, Brown, Sebby and Ferrer available tomorrow. That sure is a lot of arms to save.

  3. I stopped watching the game decided to check out Aidan Chiles film.

He’s a solid 3 star QB. Looks to have a pretty big upside.

    The goods –
Solid arm strength which will only get better as his mechanics are a bit long. Lanky frame is contributing to a long windup.
Athleticism – runs faster than he looks, long strider. Plays basketball too.
Prototype frame – listed at 6’4, 195. Could build up to 210 or 215 while probably getting faster.
    Listed stats are good

    The concerns –
It appears he had a significant injury last year. Didn’t play the whole season.
He looks like an athlete playing QB, meaning he can use his arm strength and running ability to get away with things.
Minimal offers – can always be something missing that holds back offers. And might be holding out for a UCLA offer where Ryan Gunderson is the QB coach.

The verdict – Pretty raw QB who with the right QB coach could reach some very big highs. He has visited unofficially. Definitely a guy the coaches should go hard after. He would be a good runner up prize to Dorman.

    • 11 hits and 6 runs is pretty good offensive output. Looks like the pitch-by-committee approach just flopped. The fact that they started Hunter and left him in long enough to let up 7 runs tells me something about their approach to this one. They’re probably saving the best arms for the weekend because they’re prioritizing the conference series. Losing to UW would hurt way more than losing to Gonzaga from an RPI standpoint, too.

This is still a good offensive team with strong starters and a questionable bullpen.

      • I get mid-week series don’t mean as much and you’re using less experienced guys, etc but isn’t that also the case with the other team? Zags didn’t roll out their Friday guy either. Think it points more to the fact that our inexperienced bullpen is not as good as the inexperienced bullpen of the opponent. I was hoping to go 1-1 vs zags so not bummed over the loss but unless the other team is rolling out the A squad vs our C &D squad for mid-week games, it seems to be more of a indicator that outside of our top 6 pitchers, it’s a crap shoot. Which has been the case all year. Definitely don’t want to drop the series vs UW as that’s the last “weak” opponent left on the schedule.

        • It’s also just baseball. They didn’t roll out their worst pitchers, mostly mid tier dudes. After Hunter laid a turd we played our worst closer and then just slowly worked down all of our worst pitchers. Zaga was going against guys with ERAs over 20 in the 6th inning.

Hunter, Lawson, Hibbard, Thornstein, Case and Grewe is a pretty rough lineup. I’m not really sure why we couldn’t have in Lattery or Sebby to lock it down but they seemed to want to build up the bottom of the bullpen.

Our available pitchers for the next 5 games are going to be brutal on opponents.

The Beavs win 7 straight = Angry goes silent. First game they lose = Angry’s back! lol

Mitch has a legit Top 10 team in the country and Angry’s still mad…go figure

Tonight’s game is a must to win to stay on track for a top 8 seed.

Assuming Lattery gets the start, he’ll need to go 4-5 innings for the team to win. I think Mitch will use the big arms in the bullpen to close out a win tonight.

Zags had one of their best offensive outings of the year. We’ll see if the Beavs can keep them from repeating.

    • Dorman said Townsend would probably be starting today. I don’t like it but I hope he has a short leash and they let Lattery do most of the work. He also mentioned Verberg getting work today. Hes been improving but it makes me nervous.

  5. Jesus. What a rough 1st inning. Lol. Pray to the powers that be when the post season comes around that we don’t need to go any further than 7 pitchers.

  6. Do we credit Mitch for Meckler’s 3 run double? Pretty sure Mitch had been in the ear of the outfielder.
7-4 good guys on to the t4

  7. 9-4 final. Good win after a shaky start. Don’t want to play those guys any more this year. That’s a dangerous postseason team. Swept 3rd ranked Ok State on the road earlier this season.

    • Need them to keep up their record and host their own. They would definitely be sent to the Corvallis regional if they don’t host.

  8. An acceptable result with Gonzaga. A very forgettable first game but good bounce back tonight.

The games did show that if the Beavs have to fight back through the loser’s bracket of a regional, they probably won’t have enough pitching and will need the offense to really save them. Should be ok for supers as most of the weekday guys would not be needed.

Next up is UW and a series loss would be very unacceptable

    • UW sucks. Anything less than a sweep is unacceptable.

Need to go 5-1 these next two weekends (UW at Utah)

Oregon, Arizona and UCLA to finish conference play is brutal. If the Beavs are gonna win the PAC-12 they’re certainly going to have to earn it.

      • Yeah, Eggers had a nice tweet calling that out. +7 free bags per game I think he mentioned. Big turnaround from last year where that was a huge problem for the Beavs. 1-1 vs Zags definitely acceptable and what most of us were expecting. Hard to sweep in the Pac 12 but as someone mentioned above, we really need to take full advantage of UW and Utah with the last 3 series being really brutal.
