Below are the scheduled starters for the weekend.

Date Opponent Pitchers Time (PT)
04/15 Stanford Sam Gaviglio (6-1. 1.34) vs Mark Appel (2-3, 3.09) 5:30 p.m.
04/16 Stanford Josh Osich (4-0. 3.71) vs Jordan Pries (4-2, 2.63) 1:00 p.m.
04/17 Stanford Scott Schultz vs Dean McArdle (4-1, 3.29) 1:00 p.m.

Josh Osich and Ben Wetzler are not getting it done. They have combined for three quality starts between them, and only one in Pac-10 play. In four conference starts, they have a combined 5.70 ERA.

There are two valid counterarguments:

1. The in-conference sample size is small (Wetzler @ 6innings, Osich @ 11).

2. Osich was on a pitch count early in the season, so his quality starts are down because of that.

I concede both as true. However, even in the early OOC games where their stats were impressive, both pitchers struggled with control. So, I am going strictly with the eyeball test when I say Pat Casey needs to begin rethinking the starting rotation. What are the possible solutions? Well, let's give it this weekend before definitively saying there's a problem. But, if both pitch poorly again, guys like Schultz and Nygren should be in the discussion. As bad as Nygren is, he at least throws strikes (only 6 walks in 37 innings)–they problem is his strikes are hittable (.261 overall/.333 in conference).

My feeling is that to win a conference title you need a great Friday and Saturday starter. An easy solution is to start Boyd on Saturdays. He has a 1.17 ERA and opponents are hitting only .195 against him. His numbers in Pac-10 play aren't as good, but the sample is so small (3 innings), and he dominated the conference last season. Boyd was originally slated to be a starter this year, and is 2-0 in his career when starting having gone 6+ in both starts, so he can pitch extended innings.

The downside, of course, is finding a new closer. Tony Bryant has been impressive. Perhaps Schultz could step in and act as the 7th and 8th inning bridge. The reality is that OSU needs more pitchers to step up. Where is Adam Duke? Booser has been missing since he was declared healthy.

A "professional" baseball writer, such as Aaron Fitt from Baseball America, has this concern about OSU:

The larger question about Oregon State is how well it will weather the loss of its best hitter, All-America catcher Andrew Susac, who had surgery to repair a broken hamate bone. Parker Berberet is a capable fill-in behind the plate, but he certainly will not be able to replace Susac's offense. Of course, Oregon State won three games this weekend even though Berberet went 1-for-11. Oregon State's team offense is just much better than it was a year ago, and its pitching remains very solid.

To me this comes off as lazy journalism and a cursory analysis. Susac's injury listed as OSU's main problem, and their pitching is "very solid"? Sure, the numbers are respectable, but those of us who actually watch the games know better.

As far as Stanford this weekend–I am done with predictions until I get a feel for the guys in conference play. What I'll obviously be watching most closely are the Saturday and Sunday starters. I wouldn't be surprised to see Wetzler get scratched for Nygren, and Osich moved to Sunday.

  1. After looking back at the games, Scott Schultz to me would be a really good choice to be a starter. He doesn’t walk guys, he’s made a start this year and pitched well vs Oregon. To me he’s meant to be a starter. He gets better as the game goes and would make sense to be Saturday guy. He reminds of Jorge Reyes in 2007 and Sam Gaviglio in 2009. A guy who wasn’t expected to be a big time starter his freshman and kind of burst onto the scene. I think at this point Boyd or Schultz would be good options. I have faith in both. I just prefer Schultz slightly as the #2 guy over Boyd because I’d like to see the Boyd-Bryant 1-2 punch at the end of games last the remainder of the year. They’re doing a good job, I would stick with that.

I’d probably stick with Osich as the #3 guy right now, that’s just cause I think Osich can become a good starter and he hasn’t been bad, like Wetzler has been a lot, he’s just struggled with command. I think he can get that, just will take a little bit.

Also, guys who are trying to be consistent when it comes to command should not be in the bullpen. You can’t wait for those guys to find it, cause if you do, most likely they will blow a game. You can deal with a guy who is effectively wild as a starter because, hitters are just starting off a game and have a much different approach at the beginning, giving a guy like Osich some time to settle down. I believe, if you give Osich, let’s say two more starts, I think he will start having command and can dominate games with his overpowering stuff. I just believe you have to be patient with him.

As far as the series goes, I think the Beavers take 2 of three, winning games 1 and 3. Game 2 could go either way, but I think Stanford squeaks that one out. If the Beavers get a sweep that would be awesome. But it is always tough getting sweeps on the road in conference play.

    • Pretty much agree…Wetzler has decent command (seems better than Osich, though I haven’t compared WHIP). I think he’d be okay as a situational lefty…really need another one in the pen, which would be a side benefit of moving a RP into the rotation.

      • Yeah, I agree with that. I believe it’s good to have a good amount of lefties in the ‘Pen because you always want multiple lefties to get out left handed batters and not always have it be one guy. It could strengthen the bullpen. Wetzler strikes me as a guy who gets really excited and hyped up, that works well in the bullpen where he can just face a couple batters and getting pumped up will help him. It will interesting to see how Pat Casey plays it.

      • I looked these guys up to compare…I was right that Wetzler has better control (3 fewer walks), but he actually has given up 8 more hits, resulting in a 1.41 WHIP. That is pretty high for a reliever, but sometimes guys thrive when switching rolls, so it would be worth a few shots. The good news for the entire staff is they’ll have faced the 3 best teams in the conference by Sunday. Casey might be being patient to see if they improve as they go through the lower teams. Still, I think that is a bad approach if they hope to make a deep run in the tournament. To do that, we need two dominant starters.

PS. Where has Adam Duke been?? Not a single inning?
PSS. Dylan Jones could be situational lefty. I always think of him as a position player, but he’s alright on the mound.

          • Lindsay Schnell is the beat writer for the baseball team, not Buker. Btw, have I mentioned how much I love Pat Casey? Wetzler and Nygren won’t start Sunday and it looks to be down to Boyd and Schultz. Wetzler demoted for a really bad performance. Love that move by Coach Casey. He doesn’t waste any time yanking guys and changing their roles if they aren’t playing how he wants them to. He doesn’t bs them or give excuses, he just makes changes. Love that guy. Also love how he’s down on Nygren as well. I bet he starts Schultz but you can’t wrong with either guy.

  2. I think it will be easier to overcome the loss of Susac than lack of depth in the pitching rotation. Nygren’s numbers are respectable but when he’s on the mound the game always feels like it could be busted open with one bad pitch. It was great to see Schultz pitch well after an initial rough stretch last week. But, if Wetzler and Osich cant produce quality starts the Beavs are going to have a tough time sustaining this run. I would also like to see how Boyd does as a starter – but then I would worry about depth at middle releif and closer. It will be interesting to see what plays out this weekend. Go Beavs!

  3. I don’t know. I think baseball is a wacky sport sometimes because I feel the players follow patterns more than in any other sport. Wetzler has proven to pitch well in every other appearance this year, and he is due for a good one next. But how do you justify that start with a hunch based on pretty patterns?

On the flip side, Nygren seems to have the same pattern as Wetzler, except it’s offset by one week. So the two seem to mesh perfectly. In a perfect world we would start Wetzler on Sunday and watch him go seven plus for the win. Then next week we see Wetzler start again but pull him after the first batter for Nygren.

That seems to be the pattern that has worked thus far.

But who can seriously see a pattern and count on it? I think we need to see more of the young arms coming out to play. I also think Bryant has stepped up enough to allow for Boyd to step into a starter’s role. But I so like having Boyd available for everyday duty. Oh well. Maybe Schultz, Child, Jones, Zarosinski or Duke can prove something in relief. Maybe Wetzler can do it from there instead of working from a start. His one appearance in relief was pretty good.

The one pattern I do like is that no one player or section of the line-up is responsible for the bulk of the scoring from one game to the next, let alone one week to the next. No Susac or Jake means that the meat of the order is just good, not superior.

    • Why the hell did they wait until Monday to get surgery? Again the question I want answered wasn’t asked. That’s two weeks of recovery time lost.

      • Well, Pat Casey did say it was a family decision. My guess was Jake Rodriguez and Andrew Susac were trying to get ready to play through it, then their families finally convinced them to have surgery. If it indeed was a family decision, can’t really blame Pat Casey and the coaching staff for surgery taking as long to be done.

        • I think hamate bones can be very tricky. I remember back in the 90’s, it was either Canseco or McGwire who eventually had the bone removed because it kept breaking.

  4. Good job by Oregon State to grab a 1-0 lead. Also they made Appel trow 27 pitches in the first inning. He won’t last longer than maybe 4 or 5 innings in the game, if he has multiple innings like that.

  5. These Stanford broadcasters sound like students, and they are not very bright (e.g. they’re amazed that Gaviglio’s ERA is 1.34 even after they mentioned he gave up only 4ER out of 10 runs vs Arizona, and they don’t seem to understand sample sizes).

After hearing these guys, I am pretty sure I could have gone to Stanford.

  6. Well that was about as good of a start in the first inning the Beavers could have wanted. Grabbed an early lead, made Appel work, and Gaviglio breezed through the first.

    • He only threw 7 pitches that inning. Beavs need to be more patient and get into the bullpen early. They could destroy Stanford’s pen for the series.

      • I agree. The hitters were way too aggressive and swung at pitches out of the zone. Got to make Appel prove he can consistently throw strikes.

  7. Did not like the approach by the Beavers in the second. They did not make Appel work and were getting themselves out.

  8. The gymnastics team laid an egg, btw. Not sure if anyone was following them–I was just to see if they could win the school a title (we only have 3, so I’ll take a 4th in anything).

    • I figured that would happen. Once Mike Parker brought what’s-her-face on during the broadcast last Sunday, it was the kiss of death.

  9. Gaviglio looks like he might just dominate the Cardinal. They got the 1 hit but then he struck out two and had a weak fly ball. He definitely has it going tonight. Would be nice for him to 8 innings or pitch a complete game. Would be nice to save the ‘Pen for the next two days.

  10. One criticism I have of Pat Casey is, he a lot of times just gives away outs with all these sacrifices. Put on a hit and run and you could have a guy move up two bases instead of one and you could get a hit out of it.

  11. Anyone know what the numbers mean next to the inning?
    It says 8-1, 5-2, 0-1.
    What the hell is that??

Edit: NM, apparently that is a B and S for Ball/Strike…haha

  12. By my count that’s now 79 pitches through 4 innings by Appel. If the Beavers work him in the 5th they could get into the bullpen. Need to start putting some more runs on the board though.

  13. Beavers have lost their aggressiveness. Falling back into a bad pattern. It’s okay to take pitches, but if you’re getting a fastball down the heart of the plate you got to take a hack.

  14. Danny Hayes has got himself out all night. Stanford Cardinal pitcher comes in and is having trouble throwing strikes, so he goes out of the zone and gets himself out. Really bad approach all night by him.

    • Problem is clear. They let all the good pitches go by and swing at all the bad ones. They’ve gotten themselves out all night long. They should have at least 4 or 5 runs by now.

  15. i can’t stand this stanfurd announcer.i’m going to listen to mike parker even though the video is ahead of the online radio.

  16. Sam Gaviglio continues to dominate. Will be interesting if they send him out for the ninth. Same situation as the ASU game for the most part. A ton of pitches but may finish this.

  17. I find it funny the color analyst played point guard for the Cardinal’s basketball team. Did he even play baseball?

  18. I’ve got an uneasy feeling about the 9th due to the way this ump has been calling the game…
Feel we are going to get hosed.

  19. Beavers win 1-0. Strike three was at the same location as the pitch two pitches earlier. Please don’t let the Beavers deal with him behind the plate again!

  20. Impressive team pitching performance.

Now the interesting games: 2 and 3. I’m really curious to see how Osich does, and tonight’s closer suggests Boyd on Sunday. Can’t wait for tomorrow.

  21. Ya, but Bryant was an EXCELLENT choice for a closer! He came in there and struck out 3 in a row!
That’s hard to do for most pitchers

  22. The Beavs are absolutely looking brilliant. They are doing everything they need to win. Different way of winning each time, beautiful.

But we need some more runs the rest of this weekend. Very nice win.

    • Agreed. The offense has to pick it up and I assume Pat Casey will get on their case about this performance and they will swing it better the next two days. Team is looking real good.

  23. The pitch where it was a walk and we would have had runners on 1st and 2nd was a joke ball call. Outide by a few inches and low by atleast four.

Also should have bee strike 3 early in Bryant’s and the game’s last out. Ump let the batter know on the official Called Strike 3 that he gave him a gift before.

Good opening win. Go out and take the series tomorrow BEAVERS!

  24. We cut 1 tree down, but it only took us about 2 and a half hours and 1 run to do it. Maybe tomorrow we can cut the next one down in about 2 hours and 15 minutes with 3-7 runs? One can only hope…different game plan for tomorrow, meaning the tree(s) will fall a different way….the only real question will be….will there be anyone around to hear the tree fall? ;)

  25. Great pitching performance tonight. Easy to say in hindsight but it worked out to be great move to go with Bryant in the 9th and keep from extending Gaviglio for the 2nd week in a row even though he was dominant. Bryant is really coming into his own – great to see. Looking forward to see who pitches on Sunday.

    • Yes, tonight was a phenomenal pitching performance. Either Boyd or Schultz go Sunday. Definite upgrade at this point. Interested to see how they do against the Cardinal.

      • It would be tremendous to see Schultz step up and play a prominant role in the rotation. Another reliable pitcher is sorely needed if the Beavs expect to finish conference strong and make a good post-season run. Ucla lost tonight so that helps.

        • I agree. Scott Schultz is who I would love to see step up and be a weekend starter. He has the ability and seems mentally tough. Against ASU he gave up the three run bomb and Pat Casey came to talk to him. After that he was untouchable. He seems to be able to handle things better than a guy like Ben Wetzler at this stage. I’d also like to keep Boyd in the bullpen, it gives the Beavers options and gives the Beavers a deadly 1-2 punch of Boyd and Bryant. If Osich can step up and be a big time pitcher that i think he can be, the Beavers will be an extremely tough to beat in the postseason.

          • That was pretty remarkable to watch how he responded after Casey talked to him. I initially thought Casey was going out to yank him.

          • Speaks to his mental toughness. He just strikes me as a guy who doesn’t get consumed by the big moment and can handle the pressure. Unfortunately not all pitchers have that. Boyd does, Bryant does, Gaviglio does and Schultz does. Wetzler, not so much.

          • Are we talking the same Schultz and Wetzler who did the identically opposite a couple weeks ago?

I think the formula for both games was: One starts and gets yanked before completing one or two innings. The other comes in and does ok until giving up a multi-run homer. Then that guy locks it down.

We’ve seen a couple quality starts from Wetzler, and I imagine we would see the same pattern from Schultz if he got the chance. What we have seen from both is some poor starts. And what both have proven is that they are better in middle relief. The amazing part about both of them in a starting or relief role is that the team provides great run support. Obviously, going against the opposition’s #1 means Gaviglio is going to get less run support than the others, but the team was that way last year with Sam as well.

Well, they were that way period.

I look forward to probably seeing Boyd on Sunday. But now I’m looking for the next guy who can come in for 1+ and set up Bryant. I want someone to come in the game in the seventh inning if needed and we’ll all know it’s over because we get two shut-down innings from him and a close from Bryant. Boyd was my comfort blanket. I need another.

          • Schultz has had two starts and he gave up 3 runs in about 8 innings. He hasn’t had a poor start. Casey just didn’t stretch him out in his two starts. Wetzler has had plenty of bad performances. I think it makes sense to start Scott Schultz. You keep Boyd has a lock down bridge to Bryant and Schultz IMO, will do a really good job starting.

  26. I have to drive to Vancouver, WA today. I need someone here to post updates. I follow BeavsBB on twitter, but sometimes they only update 3-4 times a game, and I do not get play-by-play!!! Let’s go Beavs! Win the series today, then sweep them tomorrow!

  27. Did we have eyes on yesterday’s practice? I’ve heard it was something of a lackluster effort on both sides.

And I hear someone else is going to retire from football due to injury. Anyone got a scoop?

    • I have lots of notes from practice yesterday, but I was really busy last night and today. I haven’t had a chance to put them into coherent thoughts. I will asap and email to Angry.

  28. Kavin Keyes comes up big with an RBI double with 2 outs and Norris scores on an error. 2-0 Beavers. Always big to score first.

  29. Hopefully Josh Osich can come in and throw strikes and can get deep into this game. Stanford is a team that I think he can be successful against. They don’t work the count a lot and can be a little over agressive

  30. The Furd doesn’t want to give us the 2 runs on the stream. That was laced into right field. too bad we can’t get on the chat, but I understand that our beavlette is driving to Vancouver..so we should keep him up to date.

This ump seems like he has a good strike zone. Looks like our bats have finally found the ball and how to make contact with it.

  31. Home plate umpire just like last night, has a different strike zone each inning. He also changes it during the same at-bat.

    • Yeah, that’s what I was saying. He changes the strike zone during the same at-bat. Makes it really hard for hitters.

  32. The Beavers strike me as a day time team. What I mean is, the offense is so much better during the day. Offense is so-so at night and really good during the day. Shame they can’t play all games during the day.

  33. Osich looks like he finally has gotten into a rhythm. After runners got on in the second at second and third, he has started to paint the corners and use his changeup a lot more. His changeup is a good one. If he can mix his changeup and fastball well the remainder of the game, he should go deep.

  34. sweet! I was dealing with difficult customers for the last 20-30 minutes! UGH!!! They didn’t wanted the stack kit for a washer/dryer, yet they didn’t want to pay the $30 for the kit to stack it. nor did they want to pay the $30 for delivery! Yet they’ll pay about $90 dollars for an accessory product….really?!

  35. What a great day so far…went trout fishing this morning…caught 4, the biggest of which was 17 pounds…then come back to my Beavs up 3-nil…and tacked on 3 more while I was filleting away.

    Life is good today.

  36. Kavin Keyes continues to be on fire. 3 for 3, two RBI’s so far. Kid is just a true freshman and already is a great hitter.

    • “I could teach those fellows to bunt in one minute. Nobody can’t hardly bunt anymore. You’ve got to get your weight more forward . . . so you’re not reaching for the ball . . . and right hand higher up on the bat.”

      Smoky Joe Wood
The Web of the Game by Roger Angell in The Only Game in Town – Sportswriting from the New Yorker

      • Yeah, the best way to describe proper bunting is to say you should catch the ball with your bat. It means you pull back/give a little just as the ball hits it to dampen the contact.

The Beavers are better at it this year, but it’s an easy play that a small ball team must be excellent at.

  37. Keyes single should have been another RBI for him in the previous inning if Hayes would have held up at second. Carter Bell seems to be really struggling at the plate, that was an awful bunt.

    • Well not necessarily. It would have been a different situation and he may have been pitched to much differently with two runners on. Carter Bell didn’t struggle until last night and now today. I think he will get back on track. Bunting must improve though. A lot of guys bunt it too firm. They have to work on bunting it on the grass so it deadens. I’m sure Pat Casey will have them work on it next week and they’ll be better.

      • The point was that he is swinging a hot bat and it was poor execution to have Hayes get caught in a run down with two outs. Bell hasn’t looked comfortable at the plate, hopefully he can have some good at bats to finish the game.

  38. Didn’t like them taking out Osich there. Not sure how many pitches he threw, but he had a 6-0 lead, didn’t have to take him out.

    • The announcers on the Stanford stream had him at 103 pitches. I agree that he should of had at least one more hitter before getting the hook.

      • I love the decision to pull him.

He’s on a strict pitch count and there’s no reason to burn his arm on a game when we’re up 6 runs (at the time).

        • Yeah, since he was at 103 pitches it was a good decision. I thought he was in the low 90’s but since he was over 100 it was smart. Since he’s coming off Tommy John Surgery, it’s understandable that Pat Casey doesn’t want to stretch him out too far.

  39. Garrett Nash doesn’t get the job done. He hasn’t played in about a month and the rust was definitely there. Right now I’d only bring him in for defensive reasons.

  40. Boyd shuts the door and the Beavers win 8-1. Beavers win the series and are going for the sweep tomorrow. Would be great to get back-to-back series sweeps.

  41. Good start by Osich today. Should give him confidence for next weekend’s game, Offense was good. Could be better but 8 runs is still pretty good. 8 straight wins now. Feels pretty good. Will be interesting to see how Scott Schultz does tomorrow.

  42. Way to take the series Beavs. Go out and earn a 2nd consecutive Pac-10 sweep tomorrow! Wonder if the Beavers would move up to #7 or maybe even #6 nationally with another sweep?

  43. Whoever pitches tomorrow better have their head in the game because Stanford will come out fighting, Awesome win today – a series win on the road is huge. What more can you say about Kavin Keyes – kid should still be a senior in high school and hits the first 3 pitches he sees? Glad to see Osich pitch well today. He still makes me nervous though. Would be great to sweep but I am more than happy with the series win!

    • I want a sweep. If you’ve won the first two, you got the finish the deal. Kavin Keyes is a beast. He’s a true freshman and will be of the great Beaver hitters. This team is rolling.

    • Haha, sorry. I did not get home from Vancouver until 11pm. I will get something up tonight.

Thanks for all the great notes from the game I was not able to listen or see any of it, sounds like we played some really good baseball.

  44. National Collegiate Baseball Writers Poll? Anyone know who the hell these guys are? Going into the weekend they still had OSU at #17 and ASU at #10. They are the ranking source used by D-1baseball.com. I do like the website as a quick source for all of the scores around the country, but these rankings give them zero credibility.

  45. Vanderbilt is leading South Carolina 3-1 on ESPN2 right now. Bottom of the 7th 0 outs, man on 1st and second(guy just got walked), and there’s a pitching change right now if you’re interested in tuning in until the Beavs series game 3 starts up.

  46. wow that was a huuuge error by the Vandy’s pitcher on a sac bunt by SC Gamecocks. Another pitching change by Vandy. Bases are loaded no outs right now. How is Vandy ranked #1? They aren’t anything special right now. I hope they lose. I don’t like SC, but that will help OSU out more with Vandy losing.

  47. Wow. The Vandy is in self destruct mode right now. The new pitcher(2nd change this inning so far) just hit a batter and so now it’s 3-2 Vandy with no outs.

  48. Wow, Nice play to the ball by the Vandy center fielder, but it fell just short for a base hit. Tied 3-3 bases loaded no outs bottom of the 7th.

  49. South Carolina is playing cheap an dirty right now. The batter is leaning into pitches trying to get hit to bring in a run.

  50. Michael Miller has to cut that ball off and get it back in. These announcers act like scoring a run in the first inning means they got this game. Awful

  51. Yeah, the Beavers are hitting a lot of balls really hard. Eventually some will fall and the Beavers have a big inning. This pitcher leaves a lot of pitches up.

  52. Nice try stanford! Great throw by Berbaret to Dunn! Good observation of Dunn to rush over to cover 2nd base to get the out.

  53. I think Schultz is getting a little better. Hasn’t gotten into a good rhythm yet but he’s getting there. I figured he’d be nervous at first because it’s his first career start in Pac-10 play and it’s on the road.

  54. Pitching change as well. That has to make Schultz feel good that Casey has faith in him even after giving up 2 runs and not getting pulled.

  55. Carter Bell makes a big mistake there. Hits into a double play right after Sandbrink was having trouble throwing strikes. He’s really struggling.

  56. Stanford’s broadcasters are unaware of what a strike zone is. a “ball down the middle of the plate” is the not the same as a ball barely above the dirt.

  57. Runners on first and second and two outs for Ryan Barnes. Would be big if he can launch it into the gap and score two.

  58. I don’t get pulling Scott Schultz here. He’s been alright. And Pat Casey and Nate Yeskie decide Ben Wetzler the guy to go to? Seriously?! This will backfire

  59. according to Mike Parker, Pat Casey moved the center fielder closer to right center before Wetzler thew that pitch. Great instinct by Pat Casey in sensing what was coming.

    • Yeah, it was a good move there. Wetzler has a decent fastball and against a righty they’re more prone to hit the other way into the gap.

  60. Ryan Dunn is another guy having some struggles. He looks like he’s trying to hit home runs and not just trying to hit the ball hard.

  61. Wetzler has done a good job since coming in. Stanford is really aggressive and that’s helping him a bit. Hopefully Wetzler can get through the 7th in good shape and they can give the ball to Tony Bryant for the final two innings and save this game.

  62. Leave Wetzler in there. He’s throwing strikes and is getting outs. He’s faced 4 batters and got them all out. I don’t see any reason to bring in a closer when Wetzler is doing so well.

    • I do. Tony Bryant is much more reliable and I wouldn’t stretch out Wetzler, especially considering he’s never closed and I only see bad from trying that with him today. That’s why they have Tony Bryant. He is a big time closer and he’s around to finish games.

    • He’s been amazing. Wish I could see this lineup with Susac and Rodriguez.

This is a really good team. I still don’t like the #2 and #3 pitchers versus top 10 teams, but they have enough to win a conference title. Osich should be the #3. We don’t have a #2 guy…it’s the biggest problem.

I’m also curious to see this lineup versus and elite pitching staff like UCLA. That will be telling, as that’s the type of pitching they’ll see in the post season.

      • The offense would be incredible with Jake Rodriguez and Andrew Susac in there.

As far as pitching goes, they won’t see the type of pitching UCLA has because they have the best pitching staff in college baseball. But yeah, they will face some tough pitching staffs so their offense needs to be ready. I think they will be though.

For the pitching staff, I would give Scott Schultz another start but I could understand Matt Boyd getting a start. If Ben Wetzler could pitch as a starter like he is today he could be a good #2 or #3 starter but he hasn’t shown the ability to be consistent.

I have a feeling Ben Wetzler starts next Saturday because he’s pitched well today and Pat Casey wants to give him a shot to prove he can be a good starter.

  63. Really like Tyler Smith’s approach since he got his chance to start with Jake Rodriguez going down. He works the count and really only swings the bat if it’s in the zone. He’s been hitting the ball really well and is on base seemingly all the time. He looks like a really good hitter but has struggled most of his first two years. Definitely a surprise.

  64. Ben Wetzler has been really good out of the bullpen today. Just wish he could pitch like this consistently as a starter.

      • I would agree with that. If Wetzler can pitch like he did today out of the bullpen, Boyd could be moved into the rotation without much of an issue. Would definitely improve the rotation. I like Scott Schultz but Boyd might be a little better option because Boyd is a better overall pitcher at this stage.

  65. The second out in the ninth (Bell to Norris) sounded on the radio like the kind of focus and intensity which we all have wanted to see in football.
Time for Bryant to end this sweep.

  66. Tony Bryant struggling in a way I haven’t seen all season. Might need a mound visit to calm him down and get the final out.

  67. Tony Bryant gets a strikeout to get the save and the Beavers win 6-4. They sweep Stanford. 9 game winning streak now.

  68. A little sloppy in the 9th but great sweep by the BEAVERS to go to 8-1 and #1 in the Pac-10! Expect atleast a #7 national ranking and maybe #6. Great job!

      • They seem like a real focused group, so I don’t they will look passed the Cougars. But it is nice that the Beavers catch a little bit of a break with a bad Cougars team coming in. I think the Beavers should dominate the series. Things are going great with this team.

    • Agreed. They seem to have troubles with them. Sweep is doable, 2-1 is a must. CAL/UCLA on the horizon…then 3 possible dogs to end the season…if there is a ‘dog’ in the Pac 10 really.

    • No link available anymore. They had one a few weeks ago but it was removed. Have to listen on the radio, unfortunately.

  69. Seriously? 250+ comments to sift through? I think this team is deserving of a per game post note. I have to say that I was expecting five of nine for the first three series. We take eight of nine in what I can only describe as dominating fashion. What can i expect for the remaining series?

    • I think we expect big things from this club the rest of the way. National seed I think is a strong possibility. They really only have two really challenging series left in the season. UCLA down in LA will be extremely tough, considering the level of pitching the Beavers will be going against. If they can take the series from UCLA this team could have an historic season. I can see the team sweeping WSU, UW, USC and Oregon. It’s always hard to sweep teams in the Pac-10 but those four teams are pretty bad and the Beavers shouldn’t have much trouble with them. That would put them at 20 wins not counting the Cal and UCLA series. If they can win 2 of three in those they would be 24-3 in conference play.

It’s crazy to think they could be 24-3 in conference play but considering who they have left it’s a possibility. That would give them for sure a top 4 national seed and makes the road to Omaha much easier. If they did all that without Jake Rodriguez and Andrew Susac, that would be an incredible run.

There are guys who are on fire right now and nobody saw them doing much this year. Tyler Smith and Michael Miller weren’t expected to do all that much this year. Jake Rodriguez took over at second base about two weeks or three weeks in and Tyler Smith seemed to disappear. Michael Miller didn’t start for a few weeks into the season and now he’s always getting hits. I’ve been critical of him in the past but he has really stepped up. Ryan Dunn was supposed to be a relief pitcher and he’s been great at shortstop. All these guys have been huge, especially since losing Andrew. Nobody saw it coming with them.

Definitely is a special group and if they get a national seed, this team I believe, will go on quite the postseason run.

      • Lots of good thoughts there, BB20. It really gets mental now, not looking past any opponent and reacting well when a hot bat cools off. I don’t think there has been any evidence to lead one to think these Beavs will look past anyone and so many guys have taken a turn at being the hero that the cool bat thing may not be a problem.

That said, who do ya see stepping up when/if Keyes cools down? Bell? Berberet? Barnes/Dunn?

Berberet has been solid on D, maybe better than Susac. Need to see Gordon get some time in behind the plate, maybe this week if we can put one away early against WSU.

Of course there is still the need to see pitching settle down.

        • When Keyes cools down I expect to see Danny Hayes get hot. Parker Berberet is on the verge of getting hot. He hit a lot of balls hard against Stanford and finally one fell down for a triple. Jared Norris will help too. What I think helps OSU is, their ability to walk at such a high rate allows them to get tons of baserunners, even when they aren’t swinging the bats really well. No matter who is cold, there is always someone who steps. That’s just the way this team is. Gotta love it.

    • Awesome! I’m a bit surprised that they’re that high. I think the team absolutely deserves it, but some of these polls are pretty slow to admit they were wrong about a team. What the hell is wrong with the collegiate baseball writers poll for example? I’m interested to see where they have OSU.

Edit – NCBWA still have their head up their collective ass. 15th in today’s poll.

Keep it up, host a regional and head to the World Series again!

      • If we keep it up we look good to host a super regional. That would help in making sure we get to the CWS. Keep up the outstanding work BEAVERS! Beaver Nation is proud. :)

        • Yeah, it’s pretty likely they get a national seed now. That would give them a regional and super regional in Corvallis. If that happens, you have to love the Beavers chances on getting to Omaha. I think they can play even better. If they stay focused, which I believe they will, and the young guys continue to get better, this team will go a long way.

    • I agree…people talking about national seed are getting ahead of themselves. All you can say right now is the post-season is a lock. One bad weekend (WSU sweeps OSU), and all the positive talk is a distant memory. I’ve seen this happen too many times to get (overly) excited yet. Things look very optimistic as of today.

      • Have you seen WSU yet? They’re terrible. Them sweeping anyone is beyond a stretch right now. Oregon State will handle them just fine, especially with it being at home and I think they sweep them.

  70. We shouldn’t be worried about hosting a Regional until we see how they perform against WSU and UCLA these upcoming weeks…they sweep WSU and leave no doubt in each game…then I will jump on the Super Regional band wagon, but until I see how they perform against the bottom feeder(did I really say that about a pac-10 school and not referring to OSU?) of the pac-10 in WSU, then I’ll be skeptical of our talent level. if we don’t get runs close to 10 or more each game, I’ll be worried about our hitting come CAL and UCLA.

  71. I can’t imagine anyone’s reading this tail end of the comments, but jic, does anyone have a stream for tonight’s giants/rockies mlb game (Monday – 18th)? Lincecum is pitching and that’s worth watching.

  72. @Helmsley: Come on buddy, pitch in with a couple friends and buy the mlb.com account. Totally worth it.

Have you forgotten what wazzu did to us in the football season? I’m afraid of the same thing happening here.

  73. Way off topic, did you guys see Leonardo DiCaprio was getting some press wearing a Beavers ball cap? I will take anything we can get ;-)

    • I don’t have a picture, but Marshall from How I Met your Mother wears OSU paraphernelia pretty often, or at least did a couple seasons ago.

  74. Leo has pretty strong ties to Oregon, a grandmother lived on the Southern Oregon coast and was a pretty strong Oregon State supporter. Not surprised to see him still wearing the gear.

  75. I wore that same hat to a company meeting when we had “sports theme” night. Unfortunately, most of my managers chose to wear Duck paraphenelia, needless to say I have had a lot of employee turnover lately.

  76. I was decked out head to toe in Oregon State gear for the 2008 Civil War at Nike where they actually have alot of Beaver fans. All my gear was Nike with the swoosh but there are also Ducks there who are a bit uptight and you never are sure when the contract ends why you didn’t transition into a regular full time position even though at the start you are told it is a possibility.
