28.Apr.2011 Baseball: Oregon State @ UCLA

The big news is that the Beavers get Jake Rodriguez back this week. At least as a fielder. The guy is a masher, so if his hand is well enough that he can hit it would be a huge lift. Both UCLA and OSU have very similar offenses (OSU has a few more HRs/pop, but otherwise the offenses are identical). Therefore, I'll focus on pitching. It's what will determine this series.

The weekend rotation hasn't been announced yet, but my guess is it will look like:

Date Opponent Pitchers Time (PT)
4/29 UCLA Sam Gaviglio (7-1, 1.68) vs  Gerrit Cole (4-4, 2.78) 6:00 p.m.
4/30 UCLA Josh Osich (5-1, 3.30) vs Trevor Bauer (8-1, 1.42) 2:00 p.m.
5/1 UCLA TBD/Scott Schultz (2-0, 3.18)  vs Adam Plutko (2-3, 1.69) 1:00 p.m.

Game 2 is a perfect example of why OSU isn't built for the post-season. Say Gerrit Cole wins game 1. The pressure shifts to Josh Osich to beat Trevor Bauer in game 2. Bauer's statistics run deep. 127SO/82IP, .145 batting average against, .80 WHIP. The strategy should be to take pitches, work long counts, and try to get Bauer out of the game by the 7th. Osich is "gutty" and described as a power arm, but the statistics don't back up the latter. He has 45 strikeouts in 46 innings, 21 walks, and 39 hits. That is a poor WHIP, and a .231 batting average against is fairly high for a Saturday starter. These numbers explain why Osich constantly finds himself in trouble.

The Beavers are going to run into this problem often in the post-season where every team has two good/great starters, and they only have one great starter and an unpredictable headcase in the Saturday slot.

I know I am on record saying the Beavers have the team chemistry to win a title. I think that is true, and it's why I'm not making a bigger deal about Osish. The Beavs can (and have) overcome him to this point, and Pat Casey seems intent on leaving him there. But I'll say it again: Boyd needs to be the Saturday starter. Pat Casey's strategy right now is to start Osich and have a quick hook. That's a good way to blow up your bullpen, and in a tight three game playoff, that could be the difference between advancing and going home. Eventually Casey's strategy will backfire.

It seems like the Beavers matchup poorly with UCLA in every sport. Even when OSU has a better team, the Bruins seem to win. I see this series being no different. In fact, even though I've been burned by predictions of late, I feel enough conviction to say OSU will be lucky to win one. I'm not going to hear the end of it if Osich dominates game 2 and wins the series for the Beavs, but even if that happens, the problem would just be disguised and the solution delayed.

You’ve gone on record as saying if OSU wins the Rose Bowl you’d close down this site.

Why not extend that to OSU Baseball? Pat Casey took OSU to the CWS three years in a row, one back to back NCs and has his team #3 in the country and leading the Pac10. You think he knows more about college baseball, his team, and his pitchers then you do?

Osich is 5-1 coming off major surgery. Including wins over multiple ranked teams. Leave it alone.

I’m not going to leave it alone until we have a #2 who pitches like a #2. When that happens I gladly leave it alone.

Regarding Casey–every public figure is open to criticism. Time will tell, and if I am wrong I’ll be the one who pays the price by looking like a fool. I criticized Michael Miller and “KRhod” all of last season, and both proved to be weakest links. If a coach plays weak links he deserves criticism. Is Osich as bad as those two guys last year? No. But he’s the weakest link right now if we’re talking National Title as a goal.

Sometimes the “weak links” get playing time because they’re the best option. And the coaches are really the best ones that can determine that. Somehow the weak links this year have managed to translate to a lot of wins and everyone is wondering how. We didn’t see this coming? I mean, who saw Stutes, Paterson, Turpen, or even Reyes pitching like they did in the post-season. Coach Casey has earned the benefit of the doubt.

Does that ever get boring for you?

I’ll give credit where credit is due. You were spot on with most of your football thoughts and opinions. As for baseball though. You keep posting each week how bad Osich is and how OSU will eventually pay the price and struggle. Yet each week dispite injuries to some our best players they keep winning. You can keep posting each week how bad you think he is and then if he has a bad outing you get to thump your chest and say ‘told you so’. Why though? OSU was picked to finish 8th in conference. Instead they are 30-8 and 10-2 in conference. They have a stable of quality pitching, both starting and relief. Sit back an enjoy the ride Angry and stop trying to be so damn negative. You’ll get plenty of chances come football and basketball to be negative.

I went back and re-read my first baseball post.
          http://angrybeavs.com/baseball/5007
          Read the comments, too.

Big picture message of that post is “who knows/dead ball era type offense/good pitching”–I mean, is that really that far off? What, are you going to harp on the fact I said, “I can see why we were picked 8th”? I CAN see why! It doesn’t mean I thought we had an awful team. In the comment area I said I could see a finish as high as 3rd. I thought we had good pitching, defense, and speed, and we do.

Also, goals and expectations change throughout a season. In February I’d be thrilled with a 30-8 mark. Heck, I still am. But now that I see the chemistry, I realize the team can win a title. That changes everything. Don’t you see that? Pitching Osich isn’t a big deal if the goal is to MAKE the post-season, but the Beavers are in the post-season with 5 more wins, so we have to reassess and ask, “Can they advance in the post-season with Osich as a #2?” Your brain is stuck in February and just happy they’re winning games. I’m looking at the present and future and talking about what needs to happen to win it all.

          Also, let me address this:

You keep posting each week how bad Osich is and how OSU will eventually pay the price and struggle

I’d have to go back and look what I wrote about Osich, but I know I don’t think he’s terrible. What I do think is that he’s unreliable, a headcase, a guy who “throws” rather than “pitches”, a guy who is into the macho, power-arm mentality (aka “KRhod”), a guy who pitches himself into trouble, a guy with poor control, etc. I know I wrote those things because they are true. As far as him being bad…despite all the flaws, he’s okay as a #3. I don’t think you can win a National Title (or maybe even a Pac-10 title) with him as a #2.

What’s it? Do you deny that Osich treads the edge too often? I like his performance thus far, and I like how the team plays behind him as well. But we seem to be hanging by a thread at the moment. Some of us have an appetite for sustained excellence, and Casey provides that in his coaching. To expect that excellence to be maintained every inning of every game is ludicrous. To expect it to be maintained over the whole season is tenuous at best given the team’s performance over the last couple years and the injury situation.

We all hope to jump on angry for being wrong. But most of us have the common sense to “neener” after the fact. He puts himself out there and relishes being wrong in these instances. Sometimes it feels good to be wrong.

You no longer have that luxury unless self-loathing is your true state of comfort.

You have put yourself out there as someone who simply relishes emotional hack-English retorts lacking any real substance. Appeals to authority and tradition and ad hominem statements do not form rational arguments.

Try telling us what you actually see with this team. Don’t give us third party observations (rankings) or irrational arguments of past glories. Tell us that you hope for the best and tell us why you think it will happen.

We’re all scratching in the dirt for morsels here, and baseball’s morsels are provided in the form of statistics. You provide none or even imply any in your outburst, therefore one can only conclude you were never interested in baseball in the first place.

Agreed angry! OS_Beavers is indeed obsessed with uniforms. I’m intrigued by uniforms just because it’s part of our image, but it’s not what “DEFINES” our brand as a university. That’s why in this article, Hatfield is quoted saying something to the effect, “The new uniform design is only the beginning in regards to forming the new OSU brand. There is still a lot more to be done outside of the uniforms, but you need to start somewhere.”

To me the uniforms are merely what helps fans distinguish between schools who are playing on the field. I don’t care what the new image is as long as it’s simple, elegant, and DESCRIBES what the university resembles.

Can’t argue with the strategy to, ” take pitches, work long counts, etc and try to get Bauer out of the game by the 7th.” In fact, this strategy would be helpful against many opponents; it is being patient at the plate w/o taking that third strike which has been lacking. Can’t argue with the results so far but I do hope to see Beavs batters work the count a little more against UCLA.

They have a .380 team OBP, which is pretty decent.

It’s really important to work Bauer hard, more so than other pitchers. He struck out 17 Cardinal in his last outing. That’s pure dominance, but it’s also 51 pitches, and that is assuming every batter struck out on 3 pitches, which we know didn’t happen. My point is that strikeout pitchers, by nature, throw a ton of pitches. It’s their one weakness, and therefore the Beav’s best chance at beating Bauer.

Angry, your defensiveness seems controlled and thoughtful – I don’t discern anger (despite the eponym). However, you don’t allow that the players (no matter the sport), in this case Osich, might improve by working on their weaknesses. It’s almost as if you believe it is status quo forever. I hope Osich hurls a gem this weekend.

A person would be a fool to say that isn’t possible. Yes, players improve…it’s rare a guy gets worse as a season progresses.

Osich’s numbers are okay, but he only went 6 innings (on 116 pitches) vs WSU and took the loss. Against Stanford he went 6 innings on 100 pitches and walked 5 guys. He’s just…all over the place. Right now he is throwing and hoping for the best. If it gets to the point where I/you feel like the guy is in control of the game that’s when he’ll have arrived. Anything else you want to throw at me, like his W-L record, beating Stanford, etc doesn’t matter. He has to control games.

Quick Football note while we wait for the baseball game:

Riley should sign Janoris Jenkins. We could have an awesome lock down secondary with him in the mix. If he sat this year, he could play in 2012 when we have Wisconsin and Boise St at home and BYU on the road early. He would be a big difference maker in the Pac-12. Give him one last chance and he could turn his whole life around. Being a part of that renewal of a man would be a good move for OSU and Riley’s family atmoshere would help Jenkins reground and contribute in a positive way. He would have a short leash but I bet he would succeed at Oregon State.

Gerrit Cole and Adam Plutko are the ones the Beavers can beat. Gerrit Cole is a tremendous pitcher but has been struggling, especially with his command. He has been leaving a lot of pitches up. I prefer the Beavers get him now that he is struggling. If he was cruising I’d be concerned. I think the Beavers win game 1 and game 3. Trevor Bauer I expect to dominate. He’s the best pitcher in the conference and possibly the nation. The Beavers will have to be unconventional against him. They don’t hit and run a whole lot and don’t steal too many bases, they will need to do that a ton against him. Can’t wait around for hits, because there won’t be many. They will have to earn walks and put guys in motion. I don’t think he strike out as many batters vs the Beavers due to the Beavers have guys who put the ball in play a ton.

I expect three low scoring games. I think OSU wins 3-1 in game 1, loses 2-1 in game 2 and wins 3-2 in game 3.

In game 3 there is talk James Nygren will start and that’s why Casey didn’t throw him longer than he did against Portland. I hope that’s not the case. I like Schultz on Sunday.

If the Beavers win two of three games, that definitely will bold well for them come postseason, with beating such great pitching.

You are the biggest joker on the internet. I can’t believe people read the crap that you write each week. Taking a cynical view on your life I would say you don’t have one. Who writes about a baseball team each week when you haven’t even seen them play. I’m sorry, but internet broadcasts and radio play-by-play are pretty pathetic means of covering a baseball team. Criticizing guys you haven’t even seen play is a waste of time for everyone in here. The fact that you have as many comments as you do in here makes me wonder if our fan base isn’t just as bad as the one down south. As for your take on Riley, you must be have been in middle school when the Oregon State football team rose up from the ashes in the late 90’s because any Beaver fan much older than that appreciates what he has meant to our program. I hate bandwagon and spoiled children Beaver fans who don’t know what real mediocrity. When have had one great season in the last 50 odd years and now every season is a disappointment for you jokers if we don’t get to the Rose Bowl every year. Most Beaver fans understand that what Riley has done for OSU is a much greater accomplishment (with numerous good seasons from) than what Erickson did (one great year, 3 mediocre years) in his tenure. But you keep writing your lame opinion and other bandwagon spoiled fans will continue to follow you. You do that and I will continue to support Beaver Athletics from Corvallis where i haven’t missed a football, basketball, or baseball game in twenty plus years.

You’re a tool. Who comes to post a comment on here like that? Why would you have to be in attendance at a game to criticize them? Who cares whether you’ve been to every game the last 20 years. That proves nothing. Watching a game live in the arena or stadium doesn’t mean you know than the person who watches on a stream. Not everyone can go to every game or any game because of any number of reason. We don’t all live in Corvallis.

I like how you think that because you don’t criticize that means you’re so much better than Angry or the people who comment here.

Btw, what good years has Riley had? His first two weren’t “good years”, 2005 was a bad year, 2010 was a bad year. They have had two years where they reached a bowl higher than the Vegas or Emerald Bowl. 2006 I guess was good, but other than that he hasn’t really had a “good year”. Erickson brought the Beavers to their first winning season in 28 years and that’s mediocre, but multiple Vegas Bowls from Riley isn’t mediocre? You can’t be taken seriously with those kind of foolish comments.

I appreciate what Angry does on this site. You’re the real joke.

Yeah, obviously I agree with BB20. One of the most cited and misunderstood trains of thought is that being somewhere gives a person more credibility. It does with some things. For example, if you’re the lone witness in a murder you have more credibility than a guy who read about the details in the paper. But, I can blur that line easily. Take Jack Ruby/Lee Harvey Oswald. Did people on TV lose anything over the guy standing there in person? I could make a compelling argument (e.g. chaos, bad angle, distracted by a friend, eye buried in a video camera ala Abraham Zapruder, etc) as to why someone glued to their TV actually observes more.

What about music critics? There are well-respected writers who rate bands from the 50s that they’ve only heard on records.

I’m a huge fan of Buston Keaton, but I’ve only seen him in movies, and 50 years after his death! Does that mean I can’t say the guy is a comedic genius?

The logic falls apart in so many ways. You are probably a parent of one of the players–this happens all the time. Also, if you think this team is perfect, you probably have terrible seats, and we see more than you, and we don’t pay for it. Hehe. I love when the joke’s on the joker.

Jackson, as one who finished Grad School (at OSU) some 20 years prior to ,”when the Oregon State football team rose up from the ashes in the late 90?s” I appreciate what Mike Riley has done for our program. However, having experienced real mediocrity and appreciating Mike Riley does not preclude me from wanting greater success for our teams.

IMHO part of being a fan is having opinions on ways to improve. It is fine if you are satisfied with giving one running back all but six carries in one season and predictably sending him into the middle of an unfocused OL over and over. It is fine if you don’t believe baseball batters can be smarter at the plate. It is fine if you believe scrambling the basketball lineup repeatedly throughout the season will develop a winning team.

I find no logic in your assumption that one cannot suggest ways to improve while still appreciating both the coach and team performance which is somewhat above mediocrity.

Taking a cynical view on your comment, and noting the time at which it was posted, I would say perhaps you were under the influence of some intoxicant. You may be better than that.

In any event, you keep on thinking things are just fine and I will continue to exchange ideas with others who would like to see improvements to team performance.

The thing is, there have been many improvements, and many of them have been things we’ve suggested here. I have no idea if that means we’re at all responsible, but I do know it validates our constructive criticism. I can think of a dozen or so things we’ve suggested, that, when done, improved the team. I can’t think of a single example of the opposite.

And what is even more amusing, is that fans will come here and bash us for saying something like, “Pankey is too slow” or “Newhouse can’t recruit”, yet the same fan will write, on another site, “It looks like the LBs are a lot faster and an upgrade over last year” and “Brennen and Brasfield should improve recruiting.”

All I can deduct is that they know we are right; they just hate how we say it. What can I tell you, Jackson, I grew up in a different part of the country where we say things outright. If you don’t want me to say your son stinks, coach him up!

my question to jackson is this then, how do the people on ESPN give analysis of games if they haven’t watched the game live? I am 23 years old and since I was 5 I went to every home football game except 2 seasons because I was back east going to school. People knew about OSU football everywhere I went back east because of where Riley has brought this program. However, there does come a time when having 5-8 wins isn’t enough. Perhaps we want to be in the position of the team down south when it comes to being known nationally, but that requires winning records and better bowl games than the Sun Bowl and Vegas Bowl which happens to be the only bowl games Riley has gotten us to. Also, if the bar isn’t raised from having a winning record to winning the pac-12 then we won’t have a chance to play in a pac-12 top 3 bowl. Raise the bar and wanting to achieve it and our opinions means we see that the beavs have talent, but there is always room for improvement. That’s the keyword, room for improvement.

Too bad there isn’t incentive for improvement. 6-6 gets Riley another year the same as 10-2. And if the 10-2 doesn’t make you a BCS bowl then the differences are really minor. Thus most years Riley feels too good about 7-5 when you usually need 9-3 seasons to really start getting into better bowls like maybe an Alamo Bowl. I hate the way his contract is structured. I would rather 8-4 or something be the level that earns another year. Less than that then we are wasting out time for mediocrity. 3 points in a Sun Bowl that most writers said was just an ugly game on both sides is not an impressive pinnacle for Riley’s recent years. How many years does he get? I am starting to think it will be all about trying to get to a BCS bowl for Riley’s entire career and never succeeding. For a supposed good coach, it shouldn’t be that hard. If recruiting needs help, figure out a plan like Oregon did. Maybe Brennan helps..who knows. But there are plenty of example of hungry coaches getting to BCS bowls in a few years and not 11-15, 16 or whenever Riley hopes to. With Chip Kelly doing so well and Riley not having an answer right now the years could add up quick. I hope not. I

I am glad Tinker is getting involved and my favorite thing he said was a “powerful and identifiable” brand. The Beavers have always been too modest and unsure of the success they achieve. They need a bolder vision that is powerful and draws confident players to it. Maybe it can make up for Riley’s personality not having those traits to some extent. Other people can win besides Riley. I don’t think I mind giving him 2-3 more years but that is what we always are saying. A coaching job in the Pac-12 will soon be a very hot commodity. The conference will leverage itself so that any job is a great one in the Pac-12. There are surely younger coaches who are hungry who are part of a new generation that will eventually start coming into the picture. Will we stick with Riley and keep extending him year after year for 6-6 and 7-5 to 2029? I hope not. The contrcat needs to be rewritten with the ‘next step’ of expectations included. He can get an extra 35K for 6-6 and 70K for 7-5 but to get anything better and an extension the mark needs to be atleast 8-4. We are breeding our own mediocrity with our ill-conceived contract of any winning season is “quite an accomplishment.” Compare that to Chip Kelly who in FIRST two years out of N.H. has been to the Rose Bowl and then follows that with a National Championship and blindly following Riley as our lives fade away over decades seems like a pathetic way to strive for more as a program and fanbase of Oregon and other US citizens.

Gawd! Enough of the gushing over uni designs and brand identities.

ASU’s new unis really suck. oSu’s unis aren’t going to be great. Wazzu’s unis were put together by someone who really, really hates Wazzu.

Even our “Giant Killer” unis had a lot more wrong with them than good.

I don’t know where you get your basis for anything good coming out of Nike… ever. They produce very poor product, and they don’t even produce it.

It is my firm belief that Nike uses a single stay for the production of all shoes. This stay does not fit 75% of the people who buy their shoes, but for some reason the people who buy their shoes just don’t get it. Since I was a runner AND a hoopster in high school, I have tried to wear Nike gear in action. I have never had a pair of Nike shoes last more than three weeks on my feet. And they are always narrow. And I don’t have wide feet. I try them on from time to time to see if they have done something to improve their product.

      They haven’t.

I could get over the ugliness that is Nike design if they actually made a half-decent product with some halfway ethical methods. But beyond image, NIKE DOES NOT CARE ONE WHIT ABOUT EITHER CONDITION.

Nike trolls are going to be added to my list soon:

The story is getting old. Find a way to actually move the program forward and do more with more. I don’t give Riley more than a 6 out of 10 as far as his actual performance in elevating us to a more bigtime and national program. Every time we play the big national game we lose unless it is USC at home. How about a Wisconsin on the road victory to ignite the program and fans. How huge would that be? Instead of pulling together for big program wins we get excuses and usually look bad so that nationally people don’t think we have alot of fight and determination to be anything other than a team that cracks the Top 25 from time to time. The big stage is about big games and we are losing them and not showing the mettle or team pride it takes to come out on top and make a name for yourselves.

Interesting move by Pat Casey to go with Nash over Miller today. Improves the defense, but offensively we will see. Pretty unbelievable that Miller not being in the lineup is not considered great news. Shows you how things have changed. Glad Carter Bell is back in the lineup. Kavin can go back to being the DH and Carter is back at third base. They really missed him defensively. He’s the team’s best defender, IMO. Hopefully he can keep swinging the bat as he did prior to missing those games.

That was a great come from behind win. Finally was able to breathe after the final out.

If the Beavs win tomorrow they’ll probably be #1 in the Baseball America poll. They’d have beaten two top 10 picks on the road, and the likely #1 pick overall.

Osich better bring his A++++ game.

Oh man tomorrow’s game is a huge opportunity. What a gutty performance tonight! Love the “Killer Bees”

I don’t think they will move up. Would take a lot to leap over Virginia and South Carolina. Osich will indeed need be big. I think think he can be though.

When UCLA went up 5-1, I didn’t think they could comeback on Cole. He’s a great pitcher. Really impressed they could storm back on Cole like that.

Trevor Bauer is a different beast though. He’s nearly unhittable. They can’t let any chances slip by. Need to take advantage whenever they catch a break. I won’t count them out though.

BB, as you previously pointed out, Cole wasn’t at his best coming into this game. The tight zone didn’t help, he did get lots of help early from Beaver batters! Glad we caught Cole when he wasn’t at his peak.

Tomorrow will be a real test and an opportunity. Nice to feel that these guys will fight to the end and fear no team.

Would never have guessed that Gaviglio giving up 5 runs would hold up for a win. Rooting for Osich to have the game of his life tomorrow but not counting on it. Winning this series would be a huge springboard to winning the conference.

What will help Osich tomorrow is that UCLA can’t hit. Beavs probably won’t hit Bauer. I expect a really low scoring game. Like I said above, the strategy needs to be “make Bauer throw a lot of pitches”…get him for a run or two and out of the game by the 6th and take your chances with the bullpen (which was unfortunately impressive tonight).

I’m encouraged by the way Beavs worked the count tonight, better than in recent games. Agree, they’ll need to do more of that tomorrow and take their chances with the Bruin Bullpen.
      Is it 2pm yet?

UCLA had 1 guy out of pen tonight. Other than Beacom they have had guys in the ‘Pen struggle lately. I think the Beavers can score some runs on that ‘Pen. The Beavers have to take advantage when they have a chance against Bauer.

Cole will be the #1 or #2 pick in this upcoming draft.; this is an outstanding win.
