MLB Draft

For those interested, mlb.com is airing the draft live.

You can see it here.

Gerrit Cole went #1 overall, Bauer #3. Nice to see two of the top three picks from the Pac-10.

Since there are a few Beavs rumored to be 1st round talent, I thought some of you would be interested in this. Personally, I don't see Osich going that high. Being a southpaw will probably get him selected in the 2nd round, but if he were right-handed he wouldn't be drafted until much later.

Bottom line? Whichever GM drafts Osich will get majorly trout-slapped.

    • It’s not a done deal that he signs in my opinion.

Tampa took 2 high school short stops, the VERY signable Jake Hager going 32nd overall. Brandon’s brother Sean plays CB for the OS football team. He was injured for some of the year and with a couple seasons at OS, his stock could rise quite a bit, resulting in a huge payday.

He might sign, but it’s far from a done deal.

  1. No Beavs selected. Draft resumes tomorrow at 9am.

The two Vandy pitchers we’ll be facing were both drafted. Grayson Garvin went #59.

  2. I think with Susac not going on day 1 he will be back at Oregon State. He’s just a sophomore and can improve his stock next year and still have leverage as a junior. Brandon Martin may still be a Beav. He was taken high but really loves OSU so he’s gonna have to be offered a nice deal to sign. Ultimately I think he does sign though.

    • I would have agreed about Susac until the Giants got him. I think he signs for them now. He’s got to figure there’s a chance he moves up that system pretty quickly to replace Buster Posey when they move him to 1st base.

  3. I thought this was an interesting bit:

Entering this season, Washington State owns the third-longest active streak with at least one player in MLB. The Cougars have had at least one player in MLB every season from 1948-2010 (63 years). Only USC (72 seasons, 1939-2010) and Oklahoma (66, 1945-2010) have an active run longer the Washington State. The 63-straight seasons ties the Cougars for fifth all-time with Holy Cross (1884-1946) right behind Fordham (64, 1889-1952) and Seton Hall (64, 1946-2009).

      • His comments about the OSU coaches suggest Sark was trying to strong-arm him, and he didn’t like it. He also said he grew up a Beaver fan, and they’re his favorite right now. Unless some other school blows him away he’ll be a Beaver.

    • What do you think of him as a player angry? He’s got some nice offers. I’m hoping we can land 1 or 2 more commitments later this month with the camp coming up. Kenny Lawler also sounded like he loved Corvallis, and it’d be awesome to snag another 4-star WR from a Pac-12 school.

  4. I’ll be in Florida this weekend for a wedding that I’m in. So hopefully you guys can tell me updates through this on the inning, score, and a general synopsis of how OSU is doing against Vandy. I will have a wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner to attend to on Friday night and not sure how long that will be. Then the wedding is on Saturday with the reception to follow. So again, not sure how late that will be either. 2 weddings to attend to within 2 weeks is brutal, especially when I can actually WATCH the Beavs play ball! Oh well, Fact O’ The Day will be up sometime soon. Just wait a bit for it, I’m taking a short break from studying for my last final that’s today.

  5. Wow, Osich really took a dive…he was at high as #33 in some mock drafts. We’re now at #110 and no Osich. He’s already 23 years old, so he probably wants to get a pro career going soon. That gives him very little leverage wherever he does get picked.

  6. Are we worried about any of our 12 signees going early?

I wouldn’t like Jace Fry to be picked any time soon. And if Susac is leaving, then I would like to see the power bats of Dylan Davis and Michael Conforto in our line-up.

    • Obviously, martin going in the sandwich round means he’s probably gone. I’m worried about Tampa Bay at #180 looking at Casey’s signees and pulling the trigger on Fry.

  7. Is anyone on here giving us a legit shot verse Vandy? No doubt Gaviglio has to come up big. With Vandy having 2 legit aces I think we have to be eying games 1 and 3.

    • I think they have a legit shot, yeah. I’m not sure how to analyze the series, though, because I don’t know what our rotation is…

Is Osich done? Is Schultz now the #2? A lot of questions about the pen, too, after last weekend. Nobody has cleared up the questions. When they do, we’ll know our odds.

    • Gotta play the games… right?

Small ball and defense can win against the most prolific of teams. We just have to do it.

Let’s just hope the hype drives home to the Vandy players that their school has never been to the CWS. Just keep asking them how it will feel to be the first, and their focus should be removed from the game itself.

I like our chances since we should be flying in under the radar. This draft is light on Beavs and even our prospects this year. Vandy has a bunch of kids who are going to be talking to teams about signing numbers.

      • I agree with all of this…the draft will shift focus for a lot of guys.

I have one fear about playing Vandy, and it has nothing to do with their talent. It’s something I noticed watching their regional last week. I’ll share it when I do a writeup for the weekend.

          • Like their hoops set-up (though not as bad), I can’t stand their field configuration. They’re racked down the 3B line by the back of their football stadium and boned by Memorial in the LF corner with a 35′ wall. They have little to no foul territory behind the plate, and even less from 90′ and beyond. And I can’t figure out where the bullpen is on the 3B side.

The best part is that they tout their infield turf as some of the best anywhere, but their outfield turf is a hazard.

    • #207 overall, late sixth round.

If they spend time rehabbing him, he could get back to form in what is a at developmental system.

I still hate the Giants though.

  8. Hmmm… Jace Fry goes with the 15th pick in the 9th round to Oakland.

It’s all about the money now. I don’t think Oakland has enough to offer him away from OSU. I feel good about that pick.

  9. So…Regional TV for Friday:

    ASU/UT…ESPN
    Stanford/NC…ESPN2
    MSU/Florida…ESPN2
    OS/Vandy…ESPNFU

Glad the Beavs got the ESPN shit channel. I don’t get that fucker either. No ESPN3, or ESPNU.

  10. Pittsburgh starts the 14th round by picking Jordan Dunatov.

I’m surprised nobody has taken a flier on Dylan Davis yet. He was projected on some boards to go as high as a first round supplemental just because of his velocity on the mound.

The Cubs took a flier on Shawon Dunston Jr in the 11th, and he’s all but said he’s committed to going to Vandy next year. I still think he should have chosen us over them. Hopefully our boys prove that right over the weekend.

  11. And Carlos Rodriguez was picked late in the 20th by Atlanta.

That makes four of our 12 2011 signees: Martin (1S), Fry (9), Dunatov (14) and Rodriguez (20).

I wouldn’t guarantee it, but if I was forced to predict I would say Martin is the only one going. With six seniors, and only three juniors drafted, there’s not much room for 11 new kids.

As well as Bell and Norris played in conference games, I think they’ll be getting a look somewhere.

  12. on an unrelated note, the OSU vs. Wisconsin game will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2 @ 9am PDT or 12pm EST on Sept. 10, 2011. That’s too early to start drinking for us west coast people! I guess I won’t be doing much work on that saturday morning cause i’ll be watching the game. Oh well. Maybe i’ll go to the game now? farrive friday and leave saturday? That would work.

  13. Off topic:

OSU is expected to get a bolder brand next year and a new tweet says CU will change looks in 2012 too. (CU is wearing 1990 unis this year). Hopefully we will be the only Pac-12 North team with a significant makeover next year so we get all the attention while we have a ton of good receivers and perhaps more of an air raid attack. It will probably be make or break time for Riley to win atleast 8 games again assuming he survives what this year brings.

  14. Will there be/is there a compilation of all OSU players and recruits who were drafted so we can keep track of who does what/stays/goes/decommits, etc.?

  15. Rd Comp A, pick 5 (38 overall) to TB – HS SS Brandon Martin
    Rd 2, pick 26 (86) to SF – Jr C Andrew Susac
Rd 5, pick 19 (170) to StL – Jr RHP Sam Gaviglio
Rd 6, pick 26 (207) to SF – RS Jr LHP Josh Osich
Rd 9, pick 15 (286) to Oak – HS LHP Jace Fry
Rd 14, pick 1 (422) to Pit – HS OF Jordan Dunatov
Rd 20, pick 25 (626) to Atl – HS LHP Carlos Rodriguez
Rd 24, pick 25 (746) to Atl – Jr CF Brian Stamps
    Rd 25, pick 10 (761) to Mil – Sr C Parker Berberet
    Rd 29, pick 3 (874) to Ari – Jr 3B Carter Bell

  16. Speaking of Cleveland, Wallace just firmed up his commitment. Obviously take it with a grain of salt this early, but good to hear nonetheless.

    • I thought he said he would shut down his recruitment after his commitment. Obviously, that doesn’t mean Hayward ignores him until signing day, but he’s always sounded 100% solid.

      • He said that, but a lot of teams have offered and/or contacted him since. He’s also still camping, which is odd for someone who is solid…I’m hoping he’s just enjoying his 15 minutes and means what he says….

  17. I love it. Vandy P Sonny Gray on MLB.com right now talking about the draft. He mentioned the SR and OSU, but he’s talking about his draft day and his future.

  18. Why is Cal’s Regional (what luck…#3 seed and you get to host) being held at Santa Clara? Is that Consturction on Memorial Stadium the reason? If so, how come Michigan didn’t just find an alternate site to face the Beavs instead of swapping sites?
