  1. Pat Casey needs to get more creative offensively. Smith gets on with a leadoff hit, no need to go with the automatic bunt. Try some hit and run, mix it up, don’t just always give away an out there.

  2. Wetzler is on his game and throwing strikes today. Hopefully he can continue to pound the zone, he typically has a couple innings where he just cannot find the zone, hope that isn’t the case today.

  3. Gordon HBP, Tyler Smith an RBI double and a bunt single for Peterson. Runners on the corners with no outs for Conforto and leading 1-0.

    • Beaver baseball twitter account confirms what you saw

Replays show that Davis was out but it was close. We’ll take it. #gobeavs

  4. Wow. Another bases-loaded failure by Dylan Davis, but a huge break when the umpire wrongly calls Davis safe at first on a close play (allowing two runs to score for OSU).

    • Maybe that call evens the 3rd strike call against Tyler Smith. Max Gordon is such a battler. Happy for him that he got this going.

  5. Dylan got a big break. He was out but great baserunning by Peterson to score there. Wetzler with a 5 run lead today is probably enough.

  6. Max Gordon with another hit, a two run single makes it 10-0 after Jake Rodriguez walked to make it 8-0. For the most part, this has been a pretty focused performance top to bottom from OSU.

  7. Angry, sorry to share this with you.

In non-baseball #GoBeavs news, quarterback Richie Harrington (@r_harrington12) will transfer from OSU to Southern Utah; is eligible for 2013

  8. Got Wetzler through 6. I’d like to see that be all for him and save him for a potential game on Saturday and let the bullpen finish this one out. I’d like to see Fry and Jackson get some time as well as Bryant.

  9. Wetzler needs the same rest whether he throws 90 pitches or 120 pitches. Casey probably wanted to save his pitchers as we’ll need them this week. And he was pitching well. Look what happens when you go to the relievers.

    Who starts on Wednesday? Boyd?

    • You bring in a reliever in with a bunch of runners on base and that can happen. And throwing 90 pitches and 120 pitches is much different. More stress on the arm when you throw 120 pitches and work through so many stressful innings. A little harder to come back from that especially when he’d be pitching on 4 days rest instead of his usual 6 days rest. No need to put the extra stress on the arm.

      • I was under the impression that a lot of it has to do with the preparation that goes into gearing up to pitch. 30 extra pitches just doesn’t seem like a huge deal if you’re already throwing. Does the warm up before pitching and between innings have any impact on their arm?

Still wondering if Boud throws Wednesday. Then who would pitch on Friday if we win?

  10. Conforto drops another at the warning track. He’s have a couple HR this week if this were Goss (or pretty much any other ballpark)

    • Any Beaver fans out there with long arms that can “assist” with these balls at the wall? (kindof sounds funny….LOL)

….oh great Beaver….give us a 10 mph wind gust whenever our boys need a boost!!!

  11. Dylan Davis continues to struggle. That at-bat was pretty bad. Not sure what he was looking for. He had pitches to hit but just wouldn’t take a hack.

  12. All of those errors makes me wonder how close this game could have been….props to the guys for showing more patience and making the Cardinals work out of or into their own problems….thought we had a couple of opportunities against MSU where we could have been more patient.
I still think this team has a lot more gas left in the tank….one game at a time baby!!!

    • Still lots of runners (11?) left. Not sure the Beavs win without the errors and the missed called (favor of the Beavs) at first base.

  13. Good job by Wetzler in the heat, not sure it was necessary to leave him in quite so long given the big lead. Nice to see Schultz get some work; but by not pulling Ben earlier an opportunity to get work for any one of several other guys from the BP was lost.

BP becomes even more critical now with the starters likely getting worn down by weather, stress, and number of pitches. Hope Boyd can be kept around 80 pitches on Wednesday but that will require some offense, luck, flawless D, and an unexpected approach by Casey.

Who would you prefer be the opponent on Wed??

    • I’d prefer MSU. I think winning 2 straight against MSU would be very difficult, while I think the Beavers could beat Indiana two in a row cause I don’t think their pitching is great. I like the odds better for OSU just having to beat MSU once.

      • I think I’d prefer MSU also. Boyd pitched pretty well against them and the Beavs did get 10 hits off their big gun. Always seems to come down to timely hitting…….and some luck!

    • I don’t know but both teams will be tough. MSU is deep and I got to think Indiana will just throw the crap out of Denatos arm.

  14. MSU would be the preferred opponent. Indiana hasn’t been here and they could . Hopefully it’s a rough and tumble battle where both teams exhaust their pitching staffs. MSU especially their bullpen.

Boyd should get the start on Wed. That should be a favorable matchup for the Beavs no matter who they face. The offense has been picking up, so the momentum is going to be with OSU.

    • I loved the write-up about Coach Smith and the Indiana team – how he took them to the Dominican Republic

COACH SMITH: I would say in all parts of that, I think there’s some elements of kids that aren’t that different. But I would agree with you that it seems that everybody has a pitching coach nowadays. Everybody, when you’re recruiting them, they have a pitching coach, a hitting coach, a this coach, a that coach, and that was one of the reasons.

And if you’ve read the papers at all ?? and I actually saw an article on it we took our team to the Dominican Republic this fall. And that’s one of the reasons I wanted to take our team to the Dominican Republic, I wanted our kids to see, baseball, you don’t need all those things. You don’t need the new batting gloves and the bat bags and the 15 pairs of this and that.

And I think it helped. So in the leadership part of it, that was a huge part. People say you went down and played good competition; well, yes, but realistically I wanted the kids to get back and see because there’s no better place, trust me, if you want to see baseball played at its most fundamental state of passion, there’s not a lot of the extra stuff, the things that jumped out to me that they’re using coconuts for cones in their drills, they actually will tie sandbags. We’ve got these nice elaborate running sleds, when you’re working on leg strength. They have sandbags tied around their waists running in the sand.

So it was just sort of that to get our kids because there’s everybody, the nice cars, the nice this, the nice that, and it’s just to get them back, you don’t need all of that to be good. Have a passion, have a love, have a work ethic. And if you can do that, you can accomplish great things in sports. So that’s, from what I’ve seen, is maybe getting now that mindset of all that specialty stuff and all the new stuff.

Appreciate this game, appreciate, respect baseball for what it is. And it’s competition. It’s not a fashion show.

  15. Weather forecast for Wed is for winds blowing in from CF at around 17mph, temp about 5 degrees cooler than today’s game conditions. Not sure how the wind behaves within the park, but the forecast from SSE would seem to make this place play even bigger than usual. Advantage Beavs?

  16. Since Fry came back, seems to me we havent seen him hardly at all. What’s the deal there? Just being very careful, or is he having some problems?

    • Fry is ready to go, not really sure why Casey and Yeskie won’t go to him since that K-State game, but he’s gotten loose a few times

      • It seems Fry might be better suited mentally to start, rather then the bullpen and coming in with runners on. Or in long relief?

  17. The Beavs did a good job of not striking out or popping out with running in scoring position today, they forced Louisville to make plays which the Beavs haven’t done in the last couple series.

  18. So IF we play well enough to win against Indiana, we’d have to throw Moore again against MSU? That doesn’t seem like it’s going to work out. Those guys can hit and they’ve all seen him.
Casey would never start Fry, would he?
Win Wednesday or it doesn’t matter.

    • Yes, Moore would start. Moore actually isn’t a bad matchup. They’ve sen him but he’s also seen them. They really only hit him well in one inning. They had 4 hits in first 2 innings, just 2 in final 5 1/3 against him. He was just nervous early in the game, it appeared, I think he’d be better against them on Friday having faced them before and pitched in that atmosphere before. Beavers also would be facing a pitcher they’ve already seen and a guy they know they can hit hard. I think OSU would feel good about that matchup, but like you said, got to win against Indiana or they won’t get another shot at Mississippi State.

      • I’m with you, GB, on your feelings about Moore. Since we’re thinking down the line (something Casey cannot let the team do), the rotation would then call for Wetzler on Saturday with only 4 days rest. You know he’ll say he is ready.

At some point Casey will have to make a move to help out these three starters. That’s why I hoped he’d use the big early lead yesterday to get Ben some rest and allow another arm to get the feel of Omaha. Max E. is a wildcard coming back from injury, Schultz may be gaining confidence, but if the Beavs keep winning I look for a game where we see as many as 3 or 4 arms coming in for less than three batters each and/or for Casey to finally start Fry or even Childs, both on a short leash. The chess game gets serious as the regular starters face less and less rest.

Now if those bats can just do their part.

  19. Agreed re Friday/Moore:

He did not have his best stuff last time…could be a factor if he gets the curve down in the zone

    I like our chances Wed.
