First off, fuck the Phillies. It’s a second-rate city, so it’s no surprise we see second-rate behavior. If the players had any sense of solidarity they would boycott [signing with] that team. But sadly they will take the money and play for those low lifes.

Beavs at WSU starts at 6pm.

  1. Hmmm… their lousy GM is from Stanford.

Buster Olney asks the best questions here. He wonders aloud if they also reported every player who did or didn’t sign with them up and down the board. If they did not, the MLBPA should get involved (his twitter comment). He almost talks about it as something the justice department should look into.

    *Phuck the Phillies

  2. OT… sort of…
    1. UCLA has stepped it up lately. They’re going to be hard to beat for the rest of the year… hard for anyone in the nation.
    2. Without looking at the line for tonight’s game, I would guess that the Beavs are -4.5 and the o/u is ~124.
    3. Syracuse deserved to lose last night if not only for the abortion of a uni they put on the floor. Whose really really really really really really really… *breathe*… really really really really really bad idea was that?

    And this is cute:

    • Interesting spot for a photo shoot. Playing hoops on the railroad tracks? I didn’t watch the video clip yet. Is that some sort of Orange Express reference?

  3. Agents are not happy with the Phillies according to Fitt:

    https://twitter.com/aaronfitt

“Hearing from one agent after another today about the Ben Wetzler situation. There will be repercussions for the Phillies.”

“One agent: “As of today, Phillies are out. Phillies are not getting into any more of our households. We’re shutting down all communications”

        • I’m sure you’ll be able to pick up a podcast from any of the numerous interviews Fitt has done today. This one was with a South Carolina station. The host spent five minutes before just being flabbergasted that any pro team would do this. Then he held up the disbelief while Fitt went over the same stuff you can read on any of the now scores of articles out there.

Fitt did touch on one thing interesting. This is a rule that snags a player every couple years. But 1992 was the last time a team did this to a player. Usually it’s an agent who got dumped for another agent who turns rat.

But the NCAA itself has admitted for the last decade that this rule flies in the face of what everyone does, and they promise every year they’re going to change it to make some semblance of sense. They know every single kid who was drafted does this except for the couple every year who tell everyone in MLB that they are going to college period, so don’t bother drafting them… and some team wastes a 35th round pick on a flier. They know this, and they keep promising to change it one day. And they never do. Instead, they catch the one or two kids every couple years that are turned in by scorned agents, and they end up getting lawsuits filed against them by these kids. And apparently they have no legal ground on which to stand, so they pay off the kids in a settlement rather than take any of these cases to court.

So the NCAA is willing to throw good money after bad over their own laziness?

I’m thinking the Northwestern kids who want a union are the only sane people in college sports right now.

  4. Could BDC use this backlash as momentum to leverage a faster, positive outcome for OSU/Weltzer with NCAA – separately from Weltzer reinstatement – addressing Phillies’ behaviors and standardizing improved protocols for pro/player contact and interaction?

  5. That was a bad half of basketball. Moreland needs a lot of work if he expects to play at the next level. Beavs with a bad last 3 min to make it a 4 point game when they could’ve blown the game open.

  6. If the Phillies had thought that they had a pre draft deal with Wetzler, then they may have violated both NCAA and MLB rules. Yes it is done all the time. But I do not believe that MLB rules permit negotiation of contracts prior to gaining draft rights. It would not be fair or ethical to other teams that might want to draft the same guy. If negotiations are really going on during the actual season, and before the draft, how can the NCAA allow any pro sport team agents or player agents on campus ? This situation has minor parallels to the Neymar story where Barca negotiated secret deals in spite of rules and in conflict with laws and tax codes.

  7. Wetzler should come back and say he got an advisor because Philly approached him before gaining draft rights and then sue them for defamation of character.

    • The NCAA is just full of pompous bullshit. Wetzler didn’t take any money, he’s a f-ing amateur period. It’s not that complicated. Get him back on the diamond this weekend. It will be a joyous day when the first superpower football conference leaves the NCAA!

  8. Man! I always feel like refs should be canned after watching Wazzu play. They play the ugliest ball there is, but they seem to always be on the good side of the refs. It’s like watching a bunch of Eddie Haskells play ball.

  9. To be worn on Sunday:

Honestly, they’re not bad color-wise. The shorts by themselves are ugly as sin. But the color matches the tops, which should be the regular design for Nikegon always. Those tops are sharp and would be in white as well.

But at least we know who was responsible for Syracuse’s stupendously ugly unis on Wednesday. Holy crap were they bad. And what made them even worse was that every player had different colored socks, shoes and leggings. If the Ducks do the same by not being uniform in those elements, that can destroy what good might be displayed here. As it is, the darker shorts on the light tops make it look like they decided to wear skirts. And the dissimilar fonts make it just look bad. It may also be a fashion bomb waiting to happen when they play live on TV at the TTATT. Those unis on that floor… uff da!

    Newsflash for Nike:
It was ugly in the 20’s too. If you’re going for that look, you shouldn’t forget the kneepads.

At least they’re not the shiny satin short shorts from the 50’s and 60’s… I guess.

    • Our turquoise unis are average at best. I won’t lie. If they weren’t noble in cause I would rail against them. But then they would be an everyday uni, and that would suck.

But they’re not as bad as these by any stretch. Even the Adidas unis last year with all the funky garbage all over them weren’t this bad. I wonder how many more schools got sucked into this bad fashion for this year.

      • I saw them on the replay on ESPN. They were bad. My friends in Florida had a good chuckle about them as well. The consensus is that someone isn’t thinking.

        That is all.
