    • Blue-winged olive (atenella) nymphs… in case anyone cared. Egg-flies work too. Yanking them n on every third cast. Two of three are immature or not clipped.

The spring run is going to be epic. I have never seen life like this in these rivers.

        • Yesterday was the McKenzie. Tons of rainbows and cutthroat.

Clipped steelhead are hard to find right now on the coast rivers. But the natives are biting like crazy.

          • I usually wait for the May Fly hatch on the Deschutes.

Don’t think I’ve ever fished the McKenzie. My grandpa used to tell me of the “speckled” trout he used to catch there and Middle Fork of the Willamette. Even saying he lost all his flies once and was wearing a red shirt so ripped some off the tail and caught a couple with that…

          • March Brown hatch on the McKenzie used to be pretty good. That was at least 10 years ago though. Been that long since I fished it. I prefer the high lakes. Although Diamond was pretty shitty last year. Lava Lake over by Bachelor is another sleeper (shhhh). There’s some hogs in there if you know where to look. Watched a guy pull in a 26″ Rainbow while fishing from a canoe just out from the reeds by the resort several years back.

          • March brown was pretty good last year. But that’s a couple weeks away. I floated a couple to see what happened…. not much… a couple nibbles from six or seven inchers. Midges work better right now. At least the young were striking on those.

          • can’t remember the last time I fished a river. Been a long time. Probably gonna make a trip to Crescent or Diamond next month. Unless we get some serious late winter weather, everything in central oregon is going to open early.

          • Funny… I can’t remember the last time I’ve been on a lake with a pole. I have to be knee deep before I’m having fun. And I grew up on lakes.

But the fish are just crap. I’ll take trout over sunnies, crappies, bass, northerns, bluegills, etc. I’ll even take them over lake trout, which taste terrible IMO. Walleye are decent, but they’re an easy catch and zero fight. It’s like pulling in a stick.

The best fight I ever had on a lake was when I pulled in a four pound bully from the shore. I thought I snagged a tire at first, but it was all tension until the fish tried to shift. I was about ready to cut the line before that. Actually, that was one of my favorite spinners, and I was young and dumb enough to probably try to dive down and free it. I have friends without fingers because of the same stupidity.

          • I fished Big Lava in the early 80’s with a friend who had a boat. He liked to drive out to the center, drop anchor and sit there all day drinking beer. Bored me silly. But a great view! We fished there until they poisoned it with rotenone (sp?) to get rid of the trash fish that had been illegally introduced. I’ve never fished it again, but your post wakes up the memories.

I finally convinced him to go to East Lake and let me run the boat we did pretty well trolling the white slide with frog flatfish.

I’m now strictly a river fisherman and fished all the rivers on the east side pretty well until about 1985 when I was promoted and moved away for 5 years. After I came back I was married..with children and life changed.

          • I have… but it’s pretty shifty terrain and steep banks… and not much shade. I’m assuming you’re talking the butte and Jacob’s house. Yesterday was actually across from James’ farm. I have friends who have river acreage on either side below the Mohawk.

  1. Gotta love the pessimism on AB.

I think they can still beat Cal (don’t think it will happen, but it’s possible), definitely can get Oregon at Gill, and Colorado tonight I think they can do it. 9-9 isn’t anything to scoff at imo.

  2. Beavs still have legit shot at NIT as long as tonight is a win. Otherwise that opportunity will be all but extinguished. Then they need to beat Oregon at home and the case is decent. Still would also help to win atleast one in the Pac-12 Tourney but maybe their story and fan support gets them a spot. Still possible. Tinks and the guys have to fight out some more wins. Beating Oregon will look good and although I don’t love the odds they could steal one in the Bay.

  3. Beat Oregon and Colorado and they have a good shot at an NIT berth. Probably puts them as 5th or 6th in the conference. Beat Washington or USC in the Pac-12 Tournament and they’ll be in decent shape of an NIT spot. If they somehow stole a game in the quarters against UCLA or Stanford and they’d be a lock. So NIT still very much possible but a loss tonight is a major blow. Need LMW and Olaf to start producing. Olaf especially. He’ll get open threes, he has to start hitting. His outside shooting is his major value to the team, when he’s not making the shots he really doesn’t help his team

      • Cool. I was amazed at how early he committed more than anything, but nice start to 2016 for GA.
Also, I love being off the net for a while, logging into AB, and getting the news from my twitter feed. Kind of funny and good work by those helping to run it.

        • sounds like Byrd, Thomas and Irvine are trying to bring in Javonte Ferguson as part of the 2016 class as well. Another Florida kid. Short and speedy WR with some decent offers but no ranking currently on the recruiting sites.

  4. Wonder if the pac-12 talking heads at halftime will just say the Buffs offense is really bad since they only scored 12 points. Even less than either the Beavs or Utah in that “really bad offensive first half” Thursday night

  5. At least they are making fun of Kevin O’Neill and his stupid “no talent” comment, sounds like he’s saying that about more teams than just the Beavers. I really wish Lamar Hurd was doing this game.

  6. at gill for my fist game in years. damn its hot in the upper levels.
also, guy behind me yelled at some fans for standing during the game. they were only standing to let a couple walk by to their seats. seriously lazy that youre pissed at fans for standing.

also, i think im sitting next to jack. either that or he’s some other guy from Eugene flying solo, with alot to say througout the game.

  7. So far they are making a loud NIT statement with this performance. Couple more nice wins and Beavs will be in. Keep it going guys. Finish with quality.

    • If you weren’t at the game you probably missed when Tinkle took his jacket off after the bad charging foul on GP2. It might not have been on TV.

I thought he was going to kick the ref’s ass at that point! I was sitting close enough to hear what he said to the ref. It wasn’t lovey dovey….I thought he was getting a technical.

GP2 finally came over and motioned to Tinkle to cool it.

    • i sat on student side. first of the bench seating rows in the upper level right at mid court. it’s such a small venue the seats ended up being great. jack didnt come back after halftime though.

      • The only bad seats are the ones right behind the girders. I hate seat-backs, so I usually let someone else sit in my seat and go sit under one of the scoreboards or thereabouts.

  8. Guaranteed a winning season with this win. Although, I hope for some more success, no small feat from WT no matter what happens the rest of the way. Only the third winning season in the last 25 years!

  9. Were these TV guys inside Gill? On Gary’s dunk Parker said more than once that Tinkle told him to go ahead; feeling the showboating by CU merited a response. OTOH the TV guys said, “Wonder what Tinkle thinks of that?”
Just one of those side issues which give this observer a chuckle.

After the first half I’d hoped for some rest for the first string in the second; no true opportunity….take the win.

    • Parker sits next to bench; next to Coach. TV sits across the court.

Parker and Tinkle have a relationship, and the former knows what’s going on with the latter. TV crew gets info in their heads from TV truck.

      Just sayin’…

  10. Horowitz tweets, “OSU coach Wayne Tinkle said forward Daniel Gomis (10 pts, five rebounds, four blocks) broke his nose in Colorado game”

  11. Good to see the Beavs effort last night. It was lacking the past few games, either because they were tired or the competition was better. I’m thinking the former.

Looks a lot better for the road trip now. If they can hold on and snag a win or two over the last 3 games, they get a week, or so, off before the Pac-12 starts. Win a couple there and who knows…

I wish Olaf would get pissed off from the other teams shoving him around all the time and fight back. Pissed like Tinkle did on the GP2 charge call.

  12. Beavs up 7-3 after 1.5, Jake Thompson has thrown 60 pitches in 2 innings. Hmmm, lets see, at 10 pitches per out that works out to being on pace for a 270 pitch game?? This could take a while!

  13. Ducks beat Utah and are almost certainly going to make NCAA Tourney now. Oregon State beating them also pretty much gives the Beavers 95% odds of making the NIT because it will be a higher quality win. Take one in the Bay and beat Oregon and OSU could still climb as high as a #3 or 4 seed in the NIT. No Bay win but beating UO should maintain us around #6 NIT seed heading into the Pac-12 Tourney. Losing our opener won’t be ideal but it will be against a closely rated team on neutral site so I believe OSU still would have enough for a NIT invite. Beat UO and win our Pac-12 tourney opener and we would probably move to a 4 or 5 seed in the NIT bracket. A lot to fight for.
