  1. Anybody know what Tinkle’s buyout looks like?

Agree, Barnes hiring a new coach sounds worse to me than letting Tinkle ride out his current deal. I have no faith in Barnes getting it right.

    • The guy he hired at Pitt was a disaster.
24–41 (.369) — “he finished his tenure at Pitt with the worst winning percentage of any coach in Pitt history.”

  2. Tinkle has to land a PG for next season, not a freshman, someone who already knows how to run a team.. Looks like they’re in on a PG transferring from Samford that would be a nice pick-up..

If they can find a PG, I think this team can finish in the top half of the PAC12 next year.. The lack of finding and developing PGs has been the big mystery during the Tinkle era.. We’re going into year five and there isn’t a single home grown PG on the roster, that’s hard to believe..

    • Even if he does land an adequate PG and they land in the top half of the conference next season, then what? The team will pretty clearly be in for a drop off the following year, so I hate that one decent year next year might buy him another 3-4-5 years. He clearly isn’t getting things done on a consistent level, and a tourney run every 3-4 years followed by futility in the intervening years is not acceptable to me.
Such a struggle cuz Tinkle clearly isn’t getting the job done, but he’s not doing quite *bad enough* to get canned.

  3. Found some salary info on the O, from Danny Moran(adblock in place) This is from back in 2016, when he signed a 2 year extension through 2021-22. Notice they cut in half his incentive for reaching the NCAA tournament? Guess that’s not a high priority for OSU?
Looks like we owe him quite a bit if he gets the axe. Maybe the thinking is some other team will hire him immediately, hoping for a Tinkle, Thompson & sons packaged deal, which would help offset our expense? Waiting longer would make that less likely.

In addition to the two-year extension he agreed to through the 2021-22 season, Tinkle will receive a boost in base salary pay from his original contract over each of the next four years, according to the agreement released to The Oregonian/OregonLive.

He will receive $1.7 million next season (up from $1 million), $1.8 million in 2017-18 (up from $1.1 million), $1.9 million in 2018-19 (up from $1.3 million) and $2 million for 2019-20 (up from $1.5 million).

For the two additional years of his contract, Tinkle will receive $2.1 million for the 2020-21 season and $2.2 million for the 2021-22 season.

Assuming the 50-year-old coach completes the length of his current contract, he will have received $13.4 million in base salary over eight seasons. Tinkle signed a six-year, $6.6 million contract in 2014.
    ………

Additionally, the new contract has a “deferred compensation account” that will be available once Tinkle completes the length of his contract. The account will be credited with $13,889 each month starting in June 2016 until the contract’s completion on June 30, 2022, putting the figure at approximately $1 million at the end of the deal.
If the university ends the agreement before the contract’s completion, Tinkle will be paid the balance of the account at that time. The payment will not be made if Tinkle is dismissed for cause or if he voluntarily ends the contract.

Another contract amendment is a decrease in how much the former Montana coach will receive for reaching the NCAA Tournament. He earned $100,000 after Oregon State qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1990 last season.

Under his new contract, Tinkle will receive $50,000 for each appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, he will earn an additional $50,000 for each win in the tournament – an incentive that remains the same from his original contract.

    • Remember they still register a click whether ad block is in place or not. They can then go to advertisers and say “we get X clicks”…advertiser has no idea how many people are blocking, and sure as hell the Oregonian isn’t telling them. A click is what matters to them; a click on an ad is what matters to an advertiser.

    • based on this salary schedule, we would owe Tinkle $6 Million in a buyout. Looks like we’ll be riding out the next 2-3 years of the Tinkle Era because I doubt he’ll pull a GA and leave money on the table.

  4. This is even more complicated because of the coaches kids on the roster.. You cut Tinkle loose and you’re probably losing your top three players to transfer.. What quality coach out there is going to jump at an OSU program that has been awful for almost three decades w/ a gutted roster..

    • You cut any head coach loose and you usually see mass transfers.
On the plus side, helps clean the slate for the new coach to build with “his” guys.
I hear Kevin Stallings is available…..

I kid……but sadly I could see Barnes double down on Stallings.

      • Two names I would hope to land.. Eric Musselman from Nevada, he’s crushed the transfer market in Reno and plays an entertaining style.. and maybe that’s what OSU needs, somebody who can play the transfer game until a few successful seasons earn the attention of High School kids. (quick google search has him at 1M per year).. Looking at Tinkle’s numbers above, OSU you could offer him a healthy pay raise..

The other is Brian Dutcher from San Diego State, he recently took over for the retired Steve Fischer. Dutcher has a ton of experience under Fischer at SDSU and Michigan and got the Aztecs back to the NCAAs in his first year. (google has him at 800K a year)

Both coaches could arguably look at OSU as a step backwards or just be disinterested in general, but maybe the chance to coach in the PAC12 and increased salary could be enough to make a move.

        • I wanted Musselman when they hired Tinkle. I would’ve taken Hopkins in a heartbeat too but he got a way better gig.

  5. Why now? Again

Unless something has happened between the HC and administration now is not the best time to be hiring/firing a coach. Didn’t we do this a few years ago?

Roll the dice with what we have next season, then reevaluate. Fire him now and there would be enough transfers we’d be playing with a bunch of walk ons next season.

For the most part, Why does it seem like Oregon St athletics cannot get out of its own way?

    • He didn’t say he’d be fired now, just that they’re souring on him now. I read that to mean this year is very important for Tinkle. He’ll be here this year.

      • My thought is that he needs to at least get an NIT team for the upcoming season, but he drives me crazy with his excuses and double-talk. First the team is inexperienced and learning “how to win” and then after Eubanks leaves the new recruits will be “P-12 ready”. WTF? I also don’t like how he is trying to sell this season as successful when it clearly was a disappointment in a down P-12 year.

The Elephant in the room is that his most successful seasons were with a Craig Robinson recruit. I think he has one more season to prove otherwise, but then outside of the coaches sons and Hollins, I’ve not been impressed with his recruiting either, so I don’t have high expectations for the future. Maybe the administration doesn’t either?

      • If his Job is on the line this year then I think we should expect:

        a) He lands a 1 and done grad transfer PG who can step in a run the show
        b) He coaches out of his mind
        c) Team plays out of their mind
        d) we back door into the tourney due to the neat deal that 3 coaches sons are on the same team
        e) lose in first round
        f) give the whole staff 3 year extension
        g) return to no pg shit ball with contracts extended forever and no chance of buying out.

        This is the OSU template

  6. Tinkle isn’t going anywhere in the next year. Yes there is pressure for him to win next year and get into the postseason, whether it’s the nit or ncaas. He can save his job for another year or two by landing a top talent.

Unless next year is a complete disaster, he should be safe again even without his son.

    • According to a twitter post they’re in on a kid from Samford University.. Had a 4 minute highlight clip attached, Christen Cunningham.. Kid would be a clear upgrade, and would get us over a hump, just not sure he’d get us over the NCAA tournament hump.

Cunningham positives – He’s pretty good w/ the ball, looks like he’s above average in a ball screen, good vision, good in transition, open floor situations.

He was hurt last year (his senior year) and only played in 9 games so he’s getting an extra year and taking advantage of that by transferring.

negatives – He shot 34% from three as a junior but only took 61 attempts in 34 games, so he’s obviously a reluctant perimeter shooter.. He shot 42% from 2FG, which leaves a bit to be desired..

The worry for me would be OSU is already an awful shooting team, even a guy like Stephen Thompson who has the “label” of being a great shooter was only 35% from 3pt.. That’s not very good, and if you thought last year was a fluke, Thompson was 34% from 3pt as a sophomore.. He’s an OK perimeter shooter.. OSU didn’t have a single player shoot 38% or higher from 3pt..

If OSU runs a lot of smaller lineups next year with Eubanks gone and no obvious replacement.. Say they get Cunningham and they run him with Tinkle, both Thompson’s, and Hollins or Reichle.. It’s difficult to win when your small and can’t shoot.. Teams will pick up on this quickly and make the appropriate adjustments.. The flip side is maybe you think that with a true PG, players like the Thompson’s and Tinkle will see their %’s go up because they’re getting more catch and shoot opportunities instead of so much coming off the dribble.. That definitely is a possibility..

I guess overall what I’m saying is, the one grad transfer PG, I’ve heard they’re after is a nice player, but not sure he’s a great fit for this particular roster..

    • I definitely noticed what you’re talking about. Lots of duck cheerleading, but not even a mention of Rodriguez returning home from Eugene and choosing immediately USC.
Guess that doesn’t help the brand.

  7. I love seeing these headlines from the O or Sedge “Luton, Colletto & Blount still in QB competition” or “No Starting QB Picked Yet”

Thanks captain obvious. When has Oregon State ever announced a starting QB at the mid way point of Spring camp? Or even the mid way point of fall camp, for that matter?
We all know who they will pick as the starting QB, and we all know that name won’t be officially announced till a couple of weeks before the Ohio State game, at the earliest.

    Same shit, different year

  8. Should we all create 10 twitter accounts so we can ‘Like’ everything x10 when there is something OSU related? I don’t know what 16-18 year olds are looking for when making decisions on schools. I hope it’s not about how many people like their photos or posts etc.

  9. I just thought of something….The Nebraska Husker fans out here are obsessed with the teams “Tunnel Walk” and it got me thinking about their home halftime adjustments…it took them 5-8 minutes to get everyone in the locker room and only have 4-10 minutes to actually discuss any halftime adjustments. That to me is a big disadvantage.

    • I don’t think there’s much noticeable disadvantage. Coaches can continue to communicate adjustments after the half ends. They aren’t reinventing the game plan at half. If adjustments take longer than 4-5 min to explain, that teams in trouble.

  10. Surprise!… Barnes doesn’t look too good in this piece by Eggers.

Seems to be a balanced account of a dust up and firing in the wrestling program; however you read it as to who is at fault.

This, from the wife of the fired coach:

Cami Roberts was appalled that Barnes fired her husband without meeting with him.

“That says a lot about him,” she says of the AD. “We had three athletic directors (during Kevin’s time at OSU). Within four to six weeks of being hired, the first two (Bob De Carolis and Todd Stansbury) met with every single coach in the department. (Barnes) has never been in the practice room, never been to a wrestling match, never had a conversation with Kevin. (Barnes) is lacking leadership skills. He should want to get to know who’s working for him.”

Barnes, again, seems to confirm the opinion of many here….he is the one who needs to be on the hot seat!

Once again, Eggers does some actual research before publishing.

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/393230-277674-one-coach-gone-one-wrestler-done-and-neither-happy-with-oregon-state

    • Barnes is an atrocious AD. It’s the only reason OSU could land him. We can’t land a great AD. They either don’t come here or they go to great places. It would be like someone from Harvard going to work for AOL instead of Google.

Ed Ray needs to go. He’s at the helm of all this nonsense.

      • “We can’t land a great AD. They either don’t come here or they go to great places. “

Well, they sure aren’t going elsewhere for more money!
Barnes receives the SECOND HIGHEST SALARY for an AD in the PAC. As authorized by Ed Ray!

And, yes “Ed Ray needs to go. He’s at the helm of all this nonsense.”

      • “Ed Ray needs to go”

Been saying that for awhile. From the interviews I’ve seen he comes off as that old, senile grandpa that has minimal clue to his surroundings. But people feel sorry for him because he’s so nice and lovable. Remind you of anyone else???

    • Interesting article. Honestly seems like the kid is a drama magnet and the coach is friendly but jokes around a lot, and this kid is trying to ruin his life for it…

Just my 2 cents but I don’t think either were treated correctly or justly and the wrestler kid should get an appointment with a psychologist, sooner rather than later.

      • I remember Dolphin Boy opining tgat the AD had to be “some Andersen liked.” Andersen and Barnes were together at Utah State i beleive. Andersen, the gift that keeps on giving…

    • They preach that they have this integrity, but the way they handled the situation was done very poorly. It seems like they don’t have a protocol or system in place.

      Ya think?

Welcome to the true OSU culture, and always be careful what you ask for.

  11. In case anybody hasnt seen it yet, here’s the new banner.
No tartan. Just a simple “GO BEAVS” which is consistent with the font/theme of our end zones.

    https://twitter.com/BeaverAthletics/status/988875032360247297?s=19

I guess it’s better than the off color orange roof.

Also, sounds like today’s baseball game up in Hillsboro vs UofP has sold out every seat including the outfield lawn seating. Should be a pretty big crowd since that stadium holds over 7K. Nice night gor it too.

  12. Sounds like a student living in an OSU dorm lost control and set his dorm room on fire and then jumped out of a 5th story window and died tonight.
At least that’s what the tweeters are saying

        • People on twitter complaining that OSU should have done more to prevent him from jumping, and blaming OSU for allowing them to see that event and they will never be able to “unsee” it.

I understand it is probably unpleasant to see somebody try to take their own life, but when you have sirens/lights/first responders on a scene, maybe look away next time? You can’t “unsee” anything.

          Consider it a life lesson.
And like orange said, hopefully this person is able to recover and get healthy again.

          • State Police statement says he was taken to Good Sam with non-life threatening injuries

OSU Alert – Corvallis Campus – Hawley Hall Public Safety Matter

OSU Alert: The situation involving the welfare of an Oregon State University Corvallis student in Hawley Hall on Tuesday, April 24, has been resolved according to the Oregon State Police and the OSU Department of Public Safety. The student has been transported for medical attention. Residents of the fifth floor of Hawley Hall will remain evacuated pending further notice from University Housing and Dining Services. OSU’s Department of Public Safety continues to request that OSU community members and the general public stay out of the area bordering Southwest Jefferson Way, Southwest Weatherford Place, Southwest Intramural Lane and Southwest Sackett Place until further notice.

The student is identified as 25 year old Charles Mark DALY. DALY is still being treated for injuries at Good Samaritan Hospital and is in stable condition. He is also being evaluated by mental health professionals. OSP is continuing the investigation.

          • Those same people must never watch tv or use social media. I still remember seeing the building burn during 9/11. That is life though.

    • What do people here think about the QBs in the draft? Josh Allen at about 56% completion percentage -and in a weaker conference – seems pretty risky for as high as he’s projected.

Angry, your Jets are likely to take a QB again, some say Rosen. What do you think of this QB cohort and the Jets potential pick?

      • They all are pretty risky but some team is going to strike gold with one of them.

Mayfield is a douche and will take some time to transition to the NFL playbook.
Rosen is a huge risk/reward – talented but often injured.
        Darnold is the lowest risk.
Allen has the physical tools but it’s all between the ears for him.
Jackson – given the right coach, he could do a lot of damage.

It’s really going to come down to getting the right fit. Wentz was a great fit for the Eagles even with the d2 question marks. Who ever gets picked by the Browns is screwed. Jets might be able to get it right if they let the QB picked sit for a year. The ol Carson Palmer treatment.

        • I like Rosen and Jackson best. Rosen most ready I think, has had an injury history. Jackson I think needs a little more development time than most franchises are willing to provide.

    • So generous of you to buy free admission tickets for everyone on the site! It’s amazing how Nebraska sells their spring game tickets for $10, sells out in 24 hours with 89k fans in attendance. that’s $890k in revenue for them off the spring game alone…It would take a sell out of 46k fans at $19.35 just to garner the same revenue. That will never happen unless we come off a Pac-12 championship year and all the players are returning for another season.

either way, I’m hoping to watch the spring game on Saturday…putting up a swing set in the backyard for an early birthday present for my daughter. She’ll be 3 a week from Saturday.

  13. Browns take Mayfield at #1, Darnold to Jets, Rosen to Cardinals, Allen to Bills….Ravens get Jackson with the last pick of the round.

  14. 8th grade step son ran a 12.44 100m in his first race using starting blocks. He’s never run track before but he’s naturally fast in football pads. I don’t know shit about track but he seems like he’s as fast as any of the kids at his meets, and he doesn’t get caught in the open field in pads. Proud of him.

  15. Noticed the forecast for Corvallis tomorrow now has thunderstorms from noon to 5:00. Spring game starts at 1:00. Beavs just can’t catch a break. The weather has been awesome all week, and then right when their scheduled event is supposed to start, it turns to shit.

    • Well it’s not like a lot of people will be inconvenienced. I would expect the crowd to be pretty small and trending senior citizen.

      • Something like 90 athletes are visiting, from various classes. Imagine most of them will have family with them too. If lightning does strike nearby, they wont even be able to play the game without a big delay. Not sure if the 2 hour practice timer gets to be put on pause due to weather delay or if we’re just SOL and lose out on that practice time? Anybody else know?

Baseball starts at 3 tomorrow. Could see that getting delayed too

  16. SCOTT RUECK opens up his mind in this piece by Eggers. Worth reading, if not for specifics of Beavs WBB, but for firming up your understanding of this coaches attitude and approach. Hard to argue with results.

When expectations are lower, it tends to be more fun,” Rueck says. “You’re doing what people don’t expect, which is a fun thing in life, right? …

“As a coach, you never want to lose. But when you do, your mind goes straight ahead — how is this going to positively impact us?

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/393469-283300-osu-women-shoot-for-even-better-future

Eggers has an accompanying article on Syd Wiese, she says:
” I am thankful every day that I ended up at Oregon State, for basketball purposes and for being a person in general. It did its job, and then some.”

  17. Another Beavergopher hits it big. Not bad for a copycat.
    https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/nba/grizzlies/2018/04/27/j-b-bickerstaff-what-you-should-know-grizzlies-head-coach/557194002/

After his two years with Oregon State, Bickerstaff played two seasons with Minnesota and averaged 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds for the Golden Gophers.

Bickerstaff moved into the role of director of operations for Minnesota’s basketball program after his collegiate career was over.

    • My thoughts exactly on the mr rogers teaching football. Can I coach TE’s and get paid $50k a year?! Geeze. Grandpa out there coaching TE’s like he’s going to catch pneumonia or something.

    • I showed the video clip to a co-worker in my office, she’s a Husker fan and she also came said, on her own without prompting, “You have Mr. Rodgers coaching for you!” Ugh…I feel bad for the TE’s after watching this video compared to other coaches’ video.

To those saying, “This is only a 1:30 clip, all the other assistant coaches videos had them teaching technique of some kind throughout the drills being run, or at least knowing terminology. If the TE group were playing tight and not loose last season, then having a relaxed coach may be more helpful in the mental aspect, but the techniques may not be sharp.

      • I take it you watched the video? I was being sarcastic with my ” “. He grabbed a boom stick to simulate a hand on the ball to strip it. The players seemed apathetic at the end when breaking the huddle; like, ‘I can’t believe we just spent time running cone drills and being told, ‘the more plays and work you put in, the more your head swells and you get overwhelmed.’ In the short clip, he had guys standing in line rather than getting the TE’s involved in the drill in some capacity. Keeping players focus in metonous drills isn’t hard; don’t let a player just stand in a line. Make them run the drill with a player moving in a circle every 5 seconds you sprint and cut. I’m not the coach, but that looked like fluff.
