Umm… you all seriously think the beavers are going to WIN?
Lol… just cause they won their last game now everybody is overexcited. No worries, it will calm.
Oh no…people are starting to have expectations again. That means the Beavs lose an ugly one. 85- 68 Fighting Condoms. Recruits that are visiting will be underwhelmed by the crowd and one will decommit. (See:typical Saturday for OSU athletics)
Wow, showing great style. And the fact that the three posters above don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground.
When The Glove is in the building you have to hope fans will be going nuts. I want it to be crazy loud and the crowd completely into it for all 40 minutes. Gary deserves a big welcome and if he starts coming back every year it will be a big boost towards OSU’s goal to restore a strong basketball program. I think we win and play inspired in an electric Gill tonight.
In this respect I feel Robinson’s saving grace is his flair for marketing, recruiting, and making OSU attractive to people who Bobby D alienated.
Saving grace from his mediocre ability to coach? Interesting O-live article this am – Robinson goes in-depth with the usual yadda yadda but never a reference to any coaching shortcomings by him and his staff.
Why does anyone think Gill have any energy? I was at the UCLA game and it really lacked energy for most of the game. Further, I was watching the game, in the student section, got pissed off and simply said to my friend, “next time they don’t contest an f****** shot in the paint, I am going to call them out.” Immediately afterward the usher came over to me and said, “sir, if you drop the eff bomb one more time then you will be out.” While I get being upset at the obscenity, she also gave dirty looks to anyone who was overly into the game. Honestly, ushers need to be told to let things go in the student section. If you try to squash the student section, the stadium will never take off.
Also, I know some people have mentioned this but the clear scouting report on our defense is to simply pass the ball around until our pulls to the strong side to heavily. Immediately kick it to the weak side for an easy three or lane to the rack. How do we fix that poor weak side rotation/play?
You know, I bet Gary Payton would make an incredible AD. Don’t know how much he earns in retirement, but he would be miles better than DeCarolis and recruiting and OSU’s image in the national media would be lifted. Perhaps the next coach after Robinson is another possibility. He is still young enough to have plenty of good years left.
So no comments about the game but right now we are up 70-51. I like the domination, hopefully they have found their stride. The question is do they stay hungry and confident throughout the rest of league play… Lets hope they had a mini-slump and are over it. I know USC sucks but hopefully this is the type of weekend that they can build off.
Yup. They could easily be 5-3 in conference play, hell, they probably should be 7-1 if not for a couple poor efforts against the Cougars and Sun Devils. The team is getting better. Tonight they played smarter and even though USC shot in the high 40′s I believe percentage wise, I saw some really good defense being played. Now it’s time for them to be consistent on the road. They have a test in Eugene next Sunday, they need to come out and be aggressive for 40 minutes. They can’t start slow. If they come out aggressive and focused I think they have a great shot to get on a nice roll. Focus has always been a key.
i guess i can’t be disappointed that we screwed around for most of the second half. But we could have won that game by 40 to 50 if we retained any focus.
I guess disappointed would be too harsh of a word for me, but still you are not going to win by 40 points when you let the underdog shot 50% on the road. Lots of energy turnovers, and USC fortunately didn’t have any “no names” light it up from three point land, so it was a needed win, but I’m not jumping up and down in my seat. Beat the Ducks and Buffs on the road and then maybe CR has a team that is living up to it’s potential. That ASU loss still sticks in my cray.
Any rumors about the football visitors? In particular the one where the coach has been sleeping with the recruit’s mom?
Sad. Seems like Joe P. just gave up after the Penn State scandal and firing — lost the desire to fight the cancer and stay alive..
You knew that his life was ultimately tied to his career. He wouldn’t live long after retiring, its sad but he loved coaching as much as life itself.
Similar to Bear Bryant. After coaching Alabama to a victory in the Liberty Bowl in December 1982, Bryant retired. After the game, he was asked by a reporter what he planned to do now that he was retired. He replied “Probably croak in a week.” In fact, Bryant died (of a sudden heart attack) four weeks later.
Nice win last night. It looks like SC is about ready to fold for the year.
I have a question. Does MR ever attend any basketball games? I was watching the Duck game with my neighbor, a big Duck, and Kelly was at their game. I thought it was only because the football team was being honored at halftime. He told me that “Chip sits in that same seat at almost every game.”
I’ve watched all the televised men’s games this year and I don’t recall ever seeing MR or BDC at Gill. If they were there the camera invariably finds them. Anyone know differently? JB
PS: I think Kenny Beaver is on to something. Gill looks bad by comparison to other PAC-12 venues. Granted winning and atmosphere contribute greatly but something needs to be done. I understand the the locker room and players lounge are very nice and recently updated so maybe recruits will overlook the arena for a few more years.
One would assume MR or one of the fb coaches was at the game with the possible recruits. Who knows where BDC is – except for the unscheduled blurb he puts out every so
often. I always thought ADs were supposed to be out there – actually directing. He’s sortof like a podium-less symphony conductor.
Re: Gill. A good designer could do wonders with the building and allow it to retain its historic (old) character. For one thing, IMO it’s too junky – sortof like a British knick-knack shop. Give it a clean, spacious, bright look – but first, the practice facility. I’m sending a small contribution this week. I assume, when one donates online and specifies a particular destination, that it actually happens, but who knows?
It does looked aged, but I think it can still be a first class facility with some upgrades. I don’t like the idea of a new stadium (I don’t see where we can get the money for that). What it really needs is wider entries. Getting out in the stairwells its way too packed, but I don’t know if you can do that? The bathrooms need to be upgraded and add a few more to keep from the lines backing up too an already crowded hallway. Yeah the seats are small, but even redoing those is something that probably isn’t feaasible.
BDC is at every game, he usually hangs out around the floor level entrance to the student section. I will say he does not look like the healthy leader of a D-1 athletic department. As for MR, I have never seen him at Gill.
MR sits on the top row of the lower section toward the SE side. I think most of the other FB coaches have seats near there, above the lower section but below the midway.
I’m not sure what anyone here is looking at when they think Gill is sub-standard. It got a lot of maintenance, and it needs a little more. And the electrical needs to be modernized.
But it is a classic gym. There are no bad sight-lines in the place. And it can get louder than any arena I’ve ever been to.
Pauley, when they close off the one end-line, will be the best arena in the league. But Gill is perfect for hoops. And if you’ve been to all the other arenas in the country you would see that old school charm too.
I personally like only MSG, the Palestra, Pauley and Assembly Hall more than I like Gill.
Now if we’re talking about the crowd actually getting into the game and making the place live up to its potential… we have a lot of work to do there. CIA, Phog… and, again, MSG are the arenas to emulate in that regard.
Note: I have not been to CIA since they added air conditioning. It would help my mental image of that place if one didn’t leave that arena smelling like a thrice used sweat sock.
And thank you to whomever decided to finally cut down those hedges in front. But Gill really needs a marquee and an entrance pavilion.
I’m with Jack. Why all the hate for Gill? Was out there for the CW in 2010 and thought they did a great job sprucing it up. Practice facility is another topic. Great place for viewing B-ball. Get a capacity crowd like back in the day and it becomes very loud and a tough place for visiting team.
I love the older venues. They have character and connect to the history of the programs. Amazing how Duke and Kansas can recruit to those dumpy old arenas? Bottom line, you win and it does not matter where you play. We have the same discussion here in Minneapolis. We don’t have and need a B-ball practice facility. However, Williams Arena aka The Barn, is sacred for most of the fan base and is a great venue. Tubby Smith made the mistake of suggesting perhaps it was time to look at replacing
it shortly after he took the job. Like telling Cubs fans to replace Wrigley.
Anyone know where the visitor’s section at Matt Court is, or are all the Beav fans just sitting behind our bench? If so, whom should I contact to sit there?
And if both of those are no goes, are any of you guys going down? Extra tix?
Thanks!
If you can get tix behind the bench, do so. Any lower tier seats along either side are fine, although the bowl is pretty steep for the back of those sections. End lines and especially upper deck seats really suck. Watch it on TV rather than waste your money on those seats. That’s pretty much what you would do in those seats anyway.
Did I mention that they do have a nice scoreboard and vid screen?
