There’s not much to talk about in this game. The Beavs lost an uninspired game at Pullman, and now they’re looking for redemption.

Motum may be the man to watch for Wazzu, but the bit players should struggle in Corvallis.

If you all hadn’t noticed, our boys have shrugged off two heart-breaking losses and a pity party to bounce back with a 4-1 record since… with three of those five games on the road.

And now the Beavs get to revisit four of their six losses on more favorable terms… with some confidence.

The line for tonight is -9.5 Beavs. I’ll take that and more.

Beavs 87 – Cougs 69

Angry

Agree with JackBeav on this one. Tonight is all about the home crowd and momentum (i.e. confidence). Every time the Beavs find their stride they seem to fritter it away with uninspired, lazy efforts. If they play any defense they'll win this one by 20, but the Beavs can't be counted on to play defense. Given the recent winning, tonight's crowd tonight could be the biggest of the year. Is that enough to will them into playing a complete game? It's hard to have faith in anything Corvallis.

  1. A plus is during this phase of the season is UO is playing the harder team first. Hopefully, with their physical style they will soften up UW for us too.

I am looking forward to being at Gill tonight.

    • I wish I could say I’m surprised but in this case……… I’m not.

Unfortunately, it’s more like par for the course for bobeeeee.

Imo the Beavs are in dire need of a new AD.

    • Bota bags and no handrails.

That’s what I remember from 81-82. And folks sleeping on the ramps at Gill to secure playoff tickets the next morning.

  2. What the hell is with Wazzu that they always look like world beaters against the Beavs? i don’t see any better defense against the pick and pop from last time either, but there is a long way to go.

  3. WSU’s 2-3 zone shutting down OSU. Cunningham 3’s keeping Beavers somewhat close. Not very impressive showing so far for the Beavers.

  4. Holy crap, did that guy just hit a half court shot and get burritos for a year? Not sure about the burritos, but that was a hell of a shot.

  5. Please tell me that the Beavs are a fundamentally strong team and I’m just not appreciating these skills which I’m unable to see.

  6. They play such fundamentally poor base defense that if they can’t create turnovers they are dead in the water. I guess they must really like playing in the CBI.

  7. We have no interior offense at all. We have no zone offense at all. We seldom look to pass inside because our bigs don’t move. I wonder what kind of zone offense we run that our bigs stand in one spot. And our defense is even worse.

  8. Beavers 8-23 field goals at the half. They’re having a hard time getting off shots, and the ones they’re taking are mostly shitty.

  9. Parker has implied that DJ Shelton is acting like a punk out there. What’s his problem? I don’t remember or know how Uncle Lonnie feels about his alma mater.

  10. Good job, was it Sara?

So the only thing that Parker can find that’s good to talk about is some 8 year old girl that’s out there first to mop up the sweat off the floor.?!?!?!?

    OMG

  11. Observations/epitaph:

    1. Interior offense = flailing toward the rim and throwing up a prayer.
    2. Team hates playing defense and rebounding.
    3. No bigs. None of these guys can play with their back to the hoop.
    4. Three pointer is their only respectable shot. Even these are rarely open or fluid shots within the offense. They’re usually isolation or quick stop and pop type shots.
    5. For the most part, the only games they win are when they out-athlete the opponent.

    • Parker and the Oregonian are always breathlessly quoting the offensive stats, but this team has to rank pretty low statiscally in many defensive categories on a national level. Steals are an overrated stat.

  12. Atta boy Starks, you’re doing just what CR apparently wants you to do. CAST OFF

Cuz if he didn’t want you to do that he’d sit your ass on the bench.

  13. hey come on guys, it was just an off night. I’m sure it has something to do with the altitude. We’ll respond the next game with more energy and we’ll shoot a lot better and we’ll really take it to them and the crowd will make all the difference. Go Beavs!

  14. Beaver women win 5th straight conference game, Ducks up 19 on the Huskies. Rueck and Altman prove once again they are totally superioor coaches(esp. in the x and o department) to Craig.

  15. I wonder if Pres. Ray would get the idea if the women’s team started having real good attendance vs how many were attending the men’s games.

That might be a way the fans could send this message: we’re willing to support OSU athletics but only if it’s something worth supporting.

  16. Ducks now up 23 at half, Cougs haven’t won a league game on the road this season. Now for Jack’s excuses as to why none of this is on Craig.

    • I was out all night enjoying other things. I see our team decided to take a dump on the floor instead of play a game, eh?

I can’t say what went wrong, but I would hazard to guess that we came out in a zone?

I looked at the box score, and Barton was our only player with a positive score differential during minutes played. Usually you can find more than just one guy who doesn’t score to fill this column.

And you guys are too funny… and whiny too. If i didn’t know better, i would guess some of you haven’t learned the art of emotional dissociation from sport. I do it at key times during any one season. Baseball a couple years back it was the UCLA series that caused me to detach from that team. It was UCLA in football yet again two years ago. And Sac St… need I say more? For hoops, it was ASU this year.

Oh, I still cheer for the teams and hope they win. I’ll give quick banter to friends and family when they want to bring up rivalries, etc. But I’m not going to go all mushy-head and whine about firing everyone including Ed Ray’s fourth cousin’s barber because my team played patty-cakes instead of taking care of business.

That’s the furthest the hoops team has made it with me still feeling emotionally invested in them in almost 20 years. Hell, it’s the first time in a couple years that they’ve made it past the fourth game of the season. I’d say things are looking pretty good.

And I hope nobody thinks anyone in the Pac can play in the WCC. That conference is the best hoops conference on the West Coast by far. Nikegon made sure tonight that the Pac will only get two teams into the dance.

If we get hot for the Pac Tourney and win the damn thing, I’ll still be detached. This team just will not let themselves succeed yet.

  17. holy shit that was a half assed effort. Question why is it that starks plays the whole game when he gets scored on and does some calvin haynes style ball chucking, and bricks everything he puts up. Sit his ass on the bench. Can we get somebody to block out and rebound? Moreland, whose effort I usually like was terrible. how many times did he get pump faked into the air – 4-5 times? He made burton look good.

I think beavs give Robinson one more year, but his ass is warming up, and might have burst into flames after that game.

  18. Concerning the osubeavers.com/CBS sports subscription video feed… Does Mike Parker not realize his voice plays during those media timeouts? God does he sound like a dickhead when he thinks he’s off air.

  19. I will be interested to hear how CR protects the players on this one. Since they won 4 out of the last 5, I guess they just weren’t ready to deal with success yet.

      • Did Starks take 15 three point attempts???? And if you are Eric Moreland, how do you play at 6’11” with at least a 7’4″ wingspan and NOT get one rebound tonight.

  20. Beavers never could do anything tonite against the WSU zone, so they were reduced to casting up three’s. Almost half their shots total where from beyond the 3 pt. line. Starks sucked. If you’re going to have a little guy out there, then at least he should be able to light it up, especially at home. He’s so streaky, on once, then goes four-five games bricking them. Sigh…this game wasn’t even as close as the final score.

    • Where would the Beavs go? if they went to the WCC they’d just get their asses kicked by St.Mary’s, BYU and Gonzaga every year and then lose at home to Loyola Marymont.

      • Where would the Beavs go?

Division 2? Our athletic execution is on par for it. If we went to D2, we would start getting D2 calibre recruits, and since our teams execute like D2 level teams, we would be competitive in D2.

    • Part of the reason I was kicked off Rivals involved mentioning the Beavs would be better off in the WAC.

Of course, not as far as academic affiliation etc, but in terms of athletics, they’d be better off in the WAC.

          • No, I know. But, not even for athletics.
We’ve got a definitely legit D1 baseball, gymnastics, women’s basketball program
Average baskeball program and a football program that once was good now in the decline (which most could be solved with the overhaul of the coaching staff and the marketing program getting a boost in fall 2013 by Nike)

We aren’t bad enough for the WAC yet folks.

          • Probably true, but we’re right on the cusp of WAC material. Sure we have a great baseball program, but the WAC had a great football program (BSU). Semi-tongue-in-cheek and frustrated remark, obviously, but behind every joke…

      • I’ve always disagreed there. We’d be better off with better leadership. Until then we are better off riding the coat tails of the Pac.

        • Financially and academics, yes. Winning games, no.
Agree we’d be best off in the PAC with good leadership, but there is a generation of Beaver fans who have gone a lifetime (they were literally born and died. i.e. the 28 years-present) without ever seeing that, so I’m not holding my breath.

          • All we need is somebody with a lot of money to come along, flex their checkbook, and force things to happen. Anyone know any billionaires that want to join the Beaver family?

          • Did it take a millionaire to get Scott Rueck? Oh I forgot. It is all about image and marketing, buying big names too. Perhaps now that women’s bb is good, we should get rid of the lowly no name coach because money, marketing and projecting style and image are the only thing that count in the world. If only we could spend unlimited amounts of money and never have to worry about tomorrow. Character and leadership do not matter.

          • Scott Rueck and Pat Casey are prime examples of finding the hungry, up-and-coming coach who values OSU as a clear promotion.

I scoffed at UO two years ago when the were spurned left and right and finally hired Dana Altman. This appears to be another example of substance over style. Granted it is only his second year, but he is winning with little talent.

I’m wondering if coach Robinson was more of the name appeal – he’s from Chicago and East Coast, he’s the president’s brother.

I hope Robinson hasn’t plateaued already. This year was supposed to be the year when the talent was all ready for OSU and the conference is weak, thus ripe for a good season. At this rate, the Beavers will be fortunate for another CBI invite.

          • Wait, after Casey’s 1999-2003 run a lot of people had settled into the fact that we had a baseball coach who couldn’t get it done. There was nothing about “up and coming.” It was just another failed experiment.

But he never faced the same undercurrents Coach Rob has had to endure since day one. When someone mentions the prez in a conversation about hoops, that’s an immediate flag for someone who’s just full of shit.

            Don’t be a shit balloon.

          • yeah but baseball is more flukey in the wins and losses. There is a clear trend developing that shows Rob is a mediocre offensive coach and a downright awful defensive coach. I guess he could improve but more than likely he will be too stubborn to do anything about it.

          • When baseball expanded to the full Pac schedule… and Casey showed a pattern of five or six straight years of losing league schedules with a team he had coached for four years previously… and facilities he had managed to get upgraded… that wasn’t a clear trend?

  21. Leave it to Beavers! With the exception of 20 minutes of great ball in Eugene this team is tanking. I was there last night. It was about as much fun as a funeral.

Then to add insult to injury the Ducks bitch slap the Huskies, setting up a rough Saturday for us. I really thought they had it figured out in Eugene two weeks ago. I guess that was more a Duck failure than our emergence. JB

PS: I wonder how the geeky troll Bow down to Washington enjoyed bowing down to the Ducks.

  22. Game Epilogue:
When the game quit being interesting I began to notice how fat everyone is these days. There were at least 6 people who nearly had heart attacks getting to row 17. And they were carrying massive soft drinks and nachos. The chubby couple in front of me revealed plumbers crack every time they stood up to let someone by. I wish I could sit with the students. I wish the game was more interesting.

  23. Angry,

I took your Describe OSU concept from last week and put it into a poll for today. It seemed fitting since most Beaver fans are frustrated after last night’s poor showing against Wazzu. BDC needs to know what fans think our image is and then hopefully take some steps to improve it.

  24. Here is what I would do. Use the 1-3-1 sparingly. Throw it out there for a play or two as a change of pace. If it is working run it for a half dozen or so possessions… if it is not working abandon it fast. Emphasize that the point of defense is to force low percentage looks (long twos) not to gamble for steals and give up high percentage looks (open 3’s and shots at the rim). Play some 2-3 when the man isn’t cutting it because of personnel shortcoming… like Sunday verse UW.

On offense lets put the ball in Cunnunghams hands. Make him set up the offense. It is not his forte but it isn’t Spark’s either. That way Spark’s can play off the ball and doesn’t have to change his mentality. Although it would be nice to see Spark’s with less minutes. Putting the ball in Cunningham’s hands allows him to work on that part of his game and shows that he will be given that opportunity if he comes back for his senior season which will be great for his daft stock and in turn the future of the OSU program.

  25. FatDog,
You are right about the number of fat people at the game but you must also need to recognize that many are older than dirt. I hear Perry felt very comfortable in those surroundings!

  26. Well it looks like the Sunday game against the Beavers will be a little more interesting than I first thought but don’t expect T.Ross and Wroten to both have a second bad game. At least we won’t have to worry about crowd noise. I read there were 5000 empty seats at Fish Gill Coliseum last night. After attending the game at Matt Arena last night, I dread having to go to that pig sty but since we already have our tickets, we will be there.
Dawgs will dominate from the tip off so if you don’t like watching a good ole fashion ass-kicking you may want to stay home.
    Now, bow down!
