It’s getting to the point where playing Burton is a fireable offense. I can’t even fathom why he sees the floor at all. This joke should be a fucking walk-on at best. Excuse my anger but this team could actually be pretty good without him.
Because we’re already down 2 bigs and he facilitates the offense at least decently?
He is a very flawed player, and can be completely frustrating. But a fire-able offense? Not really lol.
I don’t understand why people think he can facilitate the offense. Against any opponent worth a damn he just makes bad decisions. Sure he makes slick passes against joke teams but that doesn’t mean he can facilitate the offense. Plus no words can describe how much of a liability he is on the defensive end.
Beavers look good. Not sure who the other player in the backcourt is for us right now, though. Also, Berto is jacking up long 3s.
Beavers made their run with a Starks-Nelson-Reid-Shaftenaar-Moreland lineup. Brought some nice energy. Defense got better in the last 4 minutes of the half. Started getting their hands out in the passing lanes and forced tougher shots. Need Roberto to start knocking down some open shots. Nice position to be in against a team like Kansas. Just need to hang tough and make a run late.
Roberto needs to realize that backing up until your open isn’t a good technique to find an open look.
Kansas has gotten some nice home calls and no-calls. But we’re really just getting killed in the half-court, where their size and defense makes it impossible for our horrible offensive scheme to score outside of great individual efforts.
In transition and when we play “Street-ball” style, we outplay them pretty handily. But in the half-court they look like a real team and we don’t.
ANOTHER completely open bucket inside for Kansas. Collier or Burton is blowing their assignment every time.
Nice interior D! I wish Jack would explain to us that the terrible interior D is actually great D, but we are too stupid to understand it.
Does Burton have any shot other than his wayward missile hook shot?
His occasional brilliant passes are his only redeeming facet.
Think that OSU would still be in same boat even with Jared as other guys would not be as proactive as they have. Last year Would have like to have Angus, but can’t change that.
Jared made everybody better. His ability to get to the rim and create his own shot kept the offense from going stagnant, the double teams he drew allowed many to have wide open looks, and his ability to be a one man fast-break kept guys like starks and berto from making dumb plays in transition. Not to mention his defensive abilities that were twice as good as anyone else on the roster. With him back and improved I think we would have been much better this year.
They would be improved, but CR can coach, but he needs to minimize mistakes and get out there and go to clinics, meet up with other coaches and I think some better assistants that know their x’s and o’s like Steve Lavin did at St. John’s.
Oh snap!
I’ll stop pretending that Lavin didn’t coach last year or that his assistants are hired away so he has to go out and get new ones out of necessity. And I’ll stop pretending that Coach Rob consults with anyone ever about coaching hoops, because apparently only coaches who don’t coach for health reasons have the time to do anything apparently.
Jack,
Yes I do know Lavin’s story about his cancer, but I was referring to when he was hired at SJU, was to assemble a good group of assistants. I really like the guy and am glad he’s doing better, but I also like Craig and sometimes wonder he makes the coaching decisions he makes. Bottom line is this, I would like to see him succeed because the last 20+ years have been hard enough and I do think that CR has done a nice job getting the program from rock bottom to respectibility, but they need to press on and take it to the next level (i. e. the NCAA’s or NIT). The fans have waited too long. CR has good recruiters, but I think he can do better with in-game decision making. He never talks about clinics or anything outside of Princeton and Northwestern. BTW, I don’t pretend to know CR’s story, I actually read it a while back, it’s called A Game of Character. Good read!
He does the clinics and consultations with mentors and those on the professional level. I think just about every coach does so. I don’t quite understand why it has to be publicized though.
I think I understand the difference you’re pointing to. Stewart, Grace and Pomeday are too young to be known for their coaching skills. But Stewart is considered an up-and-comer. And Grace is well-respected among his peers. Pomeday is green, but he’s still solid.
The latter two are better known for their ability to recruit still. But that will change down the road.
I think what you were saying is that Coach Rob should have stepped into his current role with established assistants instead of developing them as well?
That slow development of the program from top to bottom might be great for a foundation. But that kind of foundation is too often built up by someone else. I think he knows this as well as anyone. That next level needs to be attained this year or next year.
The injuries really do suck. I think there’s enough talent to ride this team into the top 30, but I really thought they would push the top 20 this year with some solid bigs patrolling the lane. The frosh are going to have to mature quickly this year being only 10 deep.
Jack,
I really expect your opinion more so than other people on OSU basketball so it’s good to have someone that actually knows what’s going on as I can’t always follow as closely as I’d like to, but I love what CR has done, but feel like his at times taking on two jobs in one with the assistants. David Grace is I think the best on the staff, but do think Pomeday and Stewart will move on soon. Unfortuantely CR did not have a foundation to build from as John did not give him much to work with and what he did in his first year was nothing short of a miracle. The man can coach, but I think down the line he will need to get some guys that are more seasoned on the staff.
I think you’re right. Hoops is not like football in that assistants come and go at a rapid pace. So having a static unit at OSU has been something of an anomaly. Both Stewart and Grace were almost gone in the off season, so I don’t see them sticking around long. I think Pomeday is green, but he is a very good recruiter. So someone may pull him away for that.
i agree that the next choices when those guys are hired away should be more established. Coach Rob has had to pull double duty in developing his coaches along with his players. I don’t think we’re at a point in our AD to have the commitment we once had. Getting someone like Mike Dunlap is an investment hire. We were blessed to have Jimmy Anderson, a home grown assistant of the highest level… and a pretty good head until Ernest died. We’re going to need those hires sometime. So I guess holding Coach Rob’s feet to the fire now is better than making lists when the time finally comes.
We need late game 3s to get back in it and Coach Rob goes with Moreland, Burton and Collier. Terrible situational coaching.
Terrible is a reach, but really what were the options? Shaftenaar would be the only sub and he’s ice cold. Morris-Walker isn’t a shooter, Barton isn’t. Not many options.
What’s going on with LJ Westbrook? I read that he’s on the team at North Salem, but hasn’t signed at OSU yet.
I heard that too. I think they lucked out on Ostling as well because his grades were bad and he had attitude issues as well as not so desirable friends. Anyone know anything about Lapray from Sprague because he chose Oregon over OSU (bad choice). Any good?
Lapray is solid. Has a similar game to Gordon Hayward. Nice outside shot and a solid driver. Would have been nice to have a guy who can knock down some outside shots
Shit. Hope he isn’t a program changer at Oregon and that CR’s gets from back east pan out otherwise look for Altman to dominate CR like Kelly does Riley.
They also have Justin Bell coming in who is a shot blocker and rated highly. Plays for Compton Magic where Nelson and Burton came from. CR has good recruits though and they seem like good guys and good students. One is a Bob Hurley Sr. product.
Not having Brandt tonight was huge. He’s the best shooter on the team, when Starks passed it to a big man at the three point line, their outside shots weren’t respected, with Brandt it has to be respected. He knocks down some of those outside shots. Also gives the Beavers another big body. He would have given OSU that 12-14 points they needed from Moreland. His loss will be huge this season. Him being able to consistently knock down open shots will be missed when you have guys like Moreland, Burton and Collier out there.
David Shaw has done a great job. In the month of November his team needed to win 4 consecutive games to reach Rose Bowl and they got it done every single time. Imagine that, a coach that actually wins big games with the pressure on.
I agree, the have the caliber of coach (actually both UCLA and Stanford have two great winning coaches) to motivate their team to win and have the playbook to do it. One of the best played games of the year. Both teams deserve to go to the best bowls possible, even over OSU. The thought of Beavers and Riley beating up on Nicholls State makes me puke. Would not prove anything to me on how great team or Barney Fife Riley is.
Stanford would be playing for a national title if Nunes hadn’t screwed things up against Washington and Notre Dame.
