Maybe we should create an AngryBeavs drinking game to make basketball more interesting.

1shot every time "sucks", "fire", "horrible", or "game over" appears in the comments.

2 shots for every decapitating Joe Burton pass/turnover or Craig Robinson frown.

3 shots each time BeavitorNot misuses ad hominem.

Chug chug chug when we start discussing Jack's (unusually large) can opener collection rather than the game.

Who's in?

  1. Blog/comments have been nigh unreadable for several days now. I can only hope the majority of you jackasses keep your drivel away from this post so I can complain about basketball in peace.

  2. Could also add a rule to drink for every time a commentator compares Burton to one or more of the NBA Hall of Famers. Have heard comparisons to Magic, Barkley, Shaq, Kareem (sky hook? really?). Who am i missing?

  3. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over…. sucks…..fire….horrible….game over….

  4. How do you get such a great can opener collection in a podunk town like Corvallis???

…. oh, wait, he lives in Eugene.

We could start a pool on such things as how much we lose by, how many Burton turnovers….

Then at least someone would win.

  5. You forgot the presidential references. Fresh off the inaugural, in his Princeton scarf, it will be a much bigger deal.

Given DVR probation I can’t start watching until 9:30. The -20 rule might kick-in and allow me to get to bed on time. JB

  6. BB is interesting enough…I’m starting my grad thesis on “the myriad ways of losing Basketball games”

Don’t laugh, in my Tech Report class I wrote about “the viability of the Veer offense”. Got a pretty good grade, but then one of my football buddies used it for his paper….never saw it again.

  7. OK R Steve: I’m game…

    Burton Assists: over/under 4.5
    Burton T/O: over/under 3.5

I’ll be the homer…over on assists, over on TO’s

  8. OT: Looking at some Senior Bowl Blogs…Wheaton doing well. Here’s one from the NY Times:

Oregon State wide receiver Markus Wheaton continues to prove that he’s one of the two best perimeter weapons in Mobile this week. In one series of drills versus cornerbacks, Wheaton got into an exchange with Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant, baiting the defender to cut in line to face Wheaton on a rep. Wheaton blew by Trufant for a deep reception up the right flat.

    • better question is how exactly did Shawn Kemp senior manage to impregnate like 50 women? Dude is one fugly ass yard ape. Must own stock in roofies or chloroform.

      • Since we’ve nothing better to discuss…
“yard ape” is the racist comment in question here? I heard that term a million times while growing up in the 70’s and it was always in reference to kids. In fact it was always in reference to white kids like me since there was only 1-2 black families in my entire school.
“You yard apes go play outside!!” or “They just got married a few years ago and they already have 3 yard apes running around.”
I guess in my naive world calling a black man could be construed as racist but that certainly wasn’t my first thought.

        • I have an aunt who wrote a couple books with a character named Yard Ape. So I know where you’re coming from. But the term has devolved since her generation (she’s 96 now) in popular culture. And it has dual meanings depending on what region of the country you find yourself (she’s also from Oregon).

I think the age of innocence expired on this one when Howard Cosell was fired for calling Art Monk a little monkey. Cosell was good friends with the younger Monk, and he explained that’s what he called his grandchildren (and his own children when they were young) when they were raucous.

          • Alvin Garrett. Art Monk was 6’3 or 6’4. He would have had to say he was a tall monkey if it was Art Monk. A travesty of the first order. If there was someone who was not a racist, it was Howard Cosell. The PC crowd run amok.

          • Yeah, Art Monk was a graceful WR, Alvin was the pesky scatback……wait I’m thinking scatback is notlonger an acceptable term either.

        • What it amounts to, is that if you ARE racist, then you cant tolerate innocent comments. Racism is in your mind. If you actually see the races as distinct from one another, rather than just all as humans, then you react to such comments. If you arent racist, then it doesnt register.

          • I’m gonna side more with Rsteve than you guys on his comment; at least I see where he’s coming from. His point is exactly what I had said about my response to ‘yard apes’. Never thought it was racist until you guys pointed it out.
Do people have to filter and proofread everything they say just to make sure it’s not racist, or could be wrongly construed as racist? Not me. This doesn’t mean I can’t say some stupid things from time to time (shup JB!) but I don’t consider any race superior to any other race so if someone thinks I’ve said something racist then the burden is on them.
In the case of ‘yard apes’, I guess I could see it being racist if you buy into the whole blacks-monkeys nonsense.
Regardless, I am wiser now and my IQ has bumped back up that 2 points I lost after the can opener discussion.

Again, I don’t think there is any doubt Napkin was not calling Shawn Kemp Sr. a raucous child. I think it’s rather clear he meant it the way depicted in the definitions included in the link above.

If it was unintentional and a proofread would’ve caught it, that’s one thing. I think he knew what he was saying (judging by the context and the fact that his name pokes fun at Mike Parker’s alcoholism and unfortunate late-night meal at Denny’s (not that that is racist, but it denotes a tendency toward the irreverent).

          • I agree, f**k walking around on pins and needles worried about the color of somebody. Stop being afraid, you have nothing to apologize for.

      • good lord. I’ve heard it both ways. Some of you seriously should lighten up. It’s a fucking internet message board. And for the record I am not racist. I hate everyone equally. But in this case it’s ok. I’m taking it back :)

  9. who is this team and what have they done with the real beavers? I’m sure they’ll find a way to fuck it up in the 2nd half though.

    • It was just a side discussion that tacked about four times and landed on the quality of can openers and which ones might be best for purchasing in the future.

  10. Good effort tonight. Guys were diving on the floor for loose balls and competing on both ends. Washington made their rally but the Beavers never let them tie it up or take the lead and pulled away. Good to see some mental toughness out there. I feel like they found themselves in the 2nd half against USC, just made a couple mistakes to prevent them from winning. But they’ve really played hard and gave 100% effort ever since. Now they can’t let a let down happen against the Cougars. Another must win, give the same effort and they get conference win #2.

  11. The very best part of that game was that we know Kevin Brill will not be the ref for the Wazzu game.

Holy shit is that dude a horrible ref. And he just seems to get worse.

  12. Ok….question. What in y;alls opinion gave rise to this W?

Was it coaching finally getting thru…..or the players deciding, fuck the coach, lets play to win?

….a Hillary Clinton pep talk on speaker phone?

  13. That’s just a 20-something kid talking. Truth is the team should be better next year barring any injuries, non-qualifiers, suspensions, etc. I do agree with you that CR should go to DC more often as it seems to help the team!

    • He’s not wrong. That’s the expectation I have of this team next year, and I’ll be disappointed if they don’t at least come close.

Take this year’s team. Add experience, strength, development to everyone on the roster. Add Brandt and Gomis. Add Cooke and N’Diaye. Subtract Burton.

I think talk of anything less than being ranked is wrong. I’m not saying get excited for it. But I am saying that’s where we should be. If reality doesn’t match those expectations, then we have to get serious about making reality match those expectations.

      • I kind of have the notion, or at least hope, that CR may develop as a coach. Jared leaving and Brandt getting injured gets CR some slack for this year, from me.

        • Even CR knows the temperature. The linked Barometer article has a quote from him which pretty much says he’s aware that his job is measured in wins and losses, nothing more.

  14. Absolutely Jack. I don’t think losing Burton will hurt, but they should be much better and from the tone of the Barometer article, that’s where the team and coaches expect. I still think getting some new staff will help.

      • Are you thinking that’s because we’re without Fry? I think the consensus was that we were likely a favorite to get a national seed and to go on to the CWS. But that was before Fry went down.

        • It’s partially that, but I’m more concerned about middle relief. There are some good arms in the pipeline, but unsure how they will pan out. Wish they had more team speed, too. The less speed, the more they’ll have to rely on clutch hits, which they haven’t been very good at lately…

  15. Sounds like there’s a chance Kyle Kempt won’t make his official visit:

    Kyle Kempt ?@KyleKempt

Rushing onto the plane cuz we got a 20 minute window to get the hell out of a ohio or we’re stuck

    Kyle Kempt ?@KyleKempt

Flight delayed, I really hate ohio weather

At Oregon, sources tell us Helfrich has targeted Duke receivers coach Matt Lubick and that a deal is close… http://www.footballscoop.com/the-scoop

Lubick and the Duke receivers had a great season this year. This could be a nice hire for the Ducks. Good coach and good recruiter. Makes me think Oregon will look to pass more than run next year, with Helfrich running things.

  17. OT: reading a Mark Helfrich interview on ESPN (first one I’ve seen):

Q: I know a lot has been made about the play-calling. For you, is it more important to establish the play-calling pecking order, so to speak, or is it more about the collaboration and process?

MH: It’s definitely a process. That’s the neat deal about all of this.

That’s a pretty egregious usage: has Riley met his Mayberry match???

    • I will be watching to see if he starts to slouch slightly when he walks and if he dresses during October home games like he’s coaching the International Falls high school team in December.
