11.Feb.2014 Rod Perry, Revisited
People are acting like this guy is the second coming…
From Mamma Machado, regarding Garrett, but she touches on Perry:
Recruiting is the big question mark here. The NFL is a completely different beast…coaches have to coach and game plan, that’s it. In college, not only do they have to coach and game plan, they are helping to mentor 105 young men, evaluate and recruit. It can be a tough transition for many NFL lifers. Some love it, others…not so much. Coach Perry has made the transition, but he’s been aided a great deal by the help of his sons who help with a lot of the day to day ‘stuff’ with recruiting.
Fascinating that his kids help. Also, as a reader pointed out, rivals makes lists of which coach landed a recruit. Perry’s is impressive, but let’s assume his sons helped out…there is also this, regarding which coach gets credit for a singee: I remember this being brought up on their boards, and they said they really don’t have any way of knowing. The consensus was that multiple coaches evaluate and help recruit a player.
So who knows. How I read all this is that he’s been fine, but getting by with a little help from his friends.
Now let’s look at the defensive numbers:
In 2013, OSU ranked 87th in passing defense: http://www.cfbstats.com/2013/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category02/sort01.html
In 2012, OSU ranked 50th in passing defense: http://www.cfbstats.com/2012/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category02/sort01.html
They also ranked really poorly (#102) in “long passing plays” http://www.cfbstats.com/2013/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category32/sort01.html…they were 39th the year before, which is respectable but not great.
Yes, a lot of that depends on what the guys up front are doing, etc etc.
The only noticeable improvement I have seen under Perry is that guy’s play the ball more. He’s been fine…I’m not complaining about the guy, but in relation to Garrett, fans are saying things like “You guys didn’t like Perry blah blah”…well, I think many of us wanted a recruiter over a coach. That’s why we were down on Perry. And secondly, he has been fine but not great so far.
Great players make coaches look like geniuses. OSU needs better players more than they need great coaches. I’m not down on Perry, but I don’t think of him as either a great recruiter or great coach (okay recruiter, good coach), and after hearing the talk above from rivals I understand why I have that perception (wink wink).
