      • If that’s the new rumor, then she ‘looked’ into my tweet about that rumor about the donors. Lol sounds like she’s just searching message boards and trying to find new dirt. Lol

    • Actually, he’s not that expensive honestly…he wants a head coaching job where he can win…that could be in the pac-12….he has SEC experience and he interviewed for the Auburn job…he either didn’t get it or eventually turned it down. It would make sense to take a HC job outside the SEC and take a job in the power 5 conference. His tenure with nick Saban is a huge sell for recruits. It would honestly be a home run. If he’s willing to talk, id be interested…the longer the wait, the better I would say because that would mean that the coach wants to wait until after jan. bowls are done rather than before…right?!

  1. No HCing experience and big bucks! Holy Shit!! – – If this is true then there’s a darn good chance that bdc is about to step on his dick!!!

No wait, it’s more like he’s about to step on the fan’s dicks.

    • That’s why if there is any truth to the rumor, I’m thinking well known current or more likely ex-NFL head coach with no college head coaching experience. Supposedly, mutual interest according to someone over at The Blitz.

      • The rumor seems to have legs but who the heck knows… Tony Dungy’s name came up for some weird ass reason. Don’t see that happening. If a high roller meeting’s happening I’m glad that Ray’s involved, is being proactive and not letting DeCareless do it in a bubble. Heard the search committee is Ray, BDC, Masari and a few others. I don’t know if the selection process was the same with Tinks (I heard that they reached out to some former players) but getting donor commitment and gauging their thoughts on the hire is absolutely the right thing to do.

As many know Opie hated to schmooze with the bigger fish and that’s one of the reasons why the golf tourneys, etc. were done away with. That type of stuff is a given in today’s world and has to be a part of your skill set as a HC. I laughed when some folks thought Opie would make a good AD. He can’t even put together a coherent sentence let alone manage an entire athletic department.

His pressers after losing to Northwestern will be hilarious.

“Oh boy, aren’t the Wildcats an intellectually talented team? Gundy briefed us earlier and mentioned that their average player SAT scores are somewhere near 1570, which by the way is the epitome of a student athlete. Their redshirt freshman quarterback/punter reminded me a lot of a young Flutie. His Hail Mary at the end of the half was similar to the Flutie – Phelan catch but that’s the neat thing about college football – on any given day anyone can beat you… Um, you known what I mean. A TO at that juncture? I think there was something like 28 seconds remaining, it really didn’t make sense but I have to see the film… Sometimes it’s just better to get in the locker room and not take chances but we may look at tweaking our timeout strategy. By the way, we were in the right prevent D but didn’t execute.

Again, I think the Purple Haze intellect allowed them to capitalize on our inability to adjust to the read option or whatever the heck offense they ran in the 1st half… OK, maybe it was more like the entire game. As I think about it now we didn’t put the defense in the best position by going 3-16 or something on 3rd downs… Mark is a very conscientious and talented coach that has pandered to my philosophy for close to 20 years. It’s kinda unfair that the team put him in a position where he was on his heels for 47 minutes. But we’ll take a look at the film tomorrow and go have a darn good week of practice. By the way, really neat that Cindy Crawford was as the game. I had no idea she attended Northwestern. Dee got me hooked on House of Style while we were in Winnipeg.”

  2. Well, I’m off to bed…also, canzano tweeted out that the $42 Mil renovation expansion of the valley football center/ North endzone will commence after the 2015 regular season game aka the OSU vs UW game.

    • I met Riley in the offseason and he talked about that project. Plans include underground locker room, with a ramp that opens up into the end zone from under where bleachers currently are. No more coming from the corner through the football helmet. I’d imagine the football helmet COULD be moved though…….intriguing….

      • Yup, you and I were at that same meeting. Didn’t he seem ‘tired’ or really unenthused by the idea as if he didn’t really care himself, but knew we as fans would care? It wasn’t like a coach to not be enthused by something that was an upgrade to facilities…

        • He sure didnt try to sell it much. Sort of like a beggar looking for change, he sized us up and realized it wasnt worth his time to ask us for contributions.

          • Ya, I got that vibe too. Like, ‘man, they aren’t high donors! Stupid marketing people failed again!!! Ah well, maybe they’ll spread the news and it’ll gain traction!’ I guess we failed Riley in that department. Darn non verbal cues!!

  3. I hope we announce Frost in the next few days. Waiting to hear our next football head coach is even more gut wrenching than I remember for basketball. Not sure I can take even 5 more days of the anticipation. Would we let him coach in the FSU game and potentially in the National Championship for the experience gained? I’m ok with that as I think it would bring us more top recruits and free marketing for our program. It certainly would get plenty of conversation during the Rose Bowl semi and probably more in the Championship which I think they make. I can imagine them talking about Heisman Mariota and his groomer headed up the road to coach Oregon State. We’d hear great press about the Civil War rivalry getting more intense in future years.

    • The bad news would be that I don’t think he’d be able to assemble his staff to run the program while he continues coaching so our football program would be unmanned for another 5 weeks…

      • Well, I don’t think any more recruits would leave. He must have thought pretty hard already who he would like on his staff since he was the odds on favorite at Nebraska. He probably already has spoken with some of them and knows if he gets a good opportunity who is likely to join him. The extra money we are hearing about trying to be raised could be because some of those guys had conversations before and he knows about what it would take to assemble his staff.

  4. If it is a big name hire, it will take several more days, possibly a few weeks to seal this deal. If it’s a small name, up and comer, coordinator type (which is the most likely scenario, I don’t give a fuck about what that wind bag at blitz is saying), I would say we are still at least a few days out. This is BDC we are talking about here. This won’t happen quickly, and sure as shit windbag blitz doesn’t know what the fucking shit is going on. She sure and shit wishes she did though. The bullshit she is spewing is probably working to get her more subs…

    • It cant happen until at least a week after the job was posted, at the earliest I think. I dont know when it was posted though. plus there have to he some formal interviews to make sure non-cacasian candidates were considered.

        • Job advertisement procedures are set by individual agencies, not the state. I don’t think the state has any specific rules about job postings. There is no employment posting for a football coach on the OSU employment page. I think they could hire somebody today if they want to.

          • The state of Oregon has a requirement that you must leave it posted 1 week before hiring, and need to interview a minority candidate. Bob even mentions it in his letter to beavernation.

  5. Did Biley only take the good ol boys with him? Seems like he hasn’t brought Brennan, perry, brasfield and seaumalo who are all more recent hires with the exception of seaumalo who has Isaac and at OSU.

I like Brennan and I believe the backs have shown improvement under bras field. Or, Riley is leaving his minority coaches behind.

  6. Riley’s coaching tree is Rankavnaugh – Riley, wanker, cavanaugh.

I’d incorporate Bruce read but I’m not sure he’s worth even mentioning.

  7. Hadn’t bothered to check Eggers in a while. His sources says the search committee would take 10 days or less to make a hire. I hope its considerably quicker.

  8. BTW, if the donors do put up significant money and bring in a new coach, and there are changes to the recruiting buget, etc. we’ll hear from Goe et al how if they’d done that for Riley OSU would probably have a Rose Bowl by now.

I am hopeful for a Tinkle-quality hire that shows all those lazy a-holes that OSU and Corvallis aren’t the albatross they make it out to be, and a competent coach can be hired and a competitive team fielded.

    • Who gives a shit if the media pollyannas moan about Riley. And there is no question that OSU and Corvallis are not football’s dead zone, just from the successes of the past.

But we do indeed need someone with the energy and skill to gain success. That isnt everyone. Comeon, BDC, Ray, etal, and make it good. But the new coach getting success or failure, its still the right move. Riley was going nowhere. Glad we are rolling the dice!

  9. The weasel had trouble with the NCAA at two programs and both CU and UW were left in shambles when he left, plus he couldn’t get it done at UCLA. No thanks. If it came down to him or Tedford, I’d take Tedford. My list is similar to Angry’s, except I wouldn’t even consider Wilcox.

  10. Neuheisel vs Tedford is a very close one…may well be my bottom two options.

I can’t fathom how anyone is OK with Tedford. Dude has an incredibly low ceiling. Go look at his last several years at Cal, and then go look at how many games were uncompetitive blowouts. And that’s with elite recruiting classes. Riley > Tedford or Neuheisel.

Tedford has a lot in common with Riley re: media perception. Got a lot of slack for being nice and for resurrecting a decrepit program. Got a rep as a “QB guru” because he worked with Aaron Rodgers, never mind that QB under Tedford was a serious liability for the rest of his career. Esp the latter years. Remember that OSU’s big upset of Cal came when their QB totally screwed up and ran the clock out in regulation? Remember Kevin Riley?

  11. So much for the hitting the donors up for a “home run” hire. Maybe he is plan B, so they have to do the courtesies? If I have to have a San Diego St coach with Beaver ties, I’m taking Rocky Long…tougher son of a bitch and about 70 pounds lighter.

  12. Is there some NCAA regulation that requires a school to “check in” with that school’s AD before contacting a coach? Or is this just common courtesy?

  13. I wouldn’t worry about who’s been contacted so far.

If BDC only targets one guy and it doesn’t work out, the other candidates might have moved on by then. Got to keep them all hanging in case the first choice doesn’t work out.

    • Good think the PAC12 expanded. Otherwise the PAC12 would be the ones on the outside.

I like how the BIG12 made a big deal about the one true champion when they looked down on the PAC10 for playing round robin.

Anyone think the PAC12 will go to 10 or 11 conference games?

Pluses – Easiest way to increase SOS in the new playoff environment and you don’t have to pay schools to come play and other schools can’t back out of the arrangement. More competitive games.

Minuses – One or two extra losses for the conference. Tougher road to undefeated season.
      – Less chance of seeing quality non conference games.

  14. Found the letter from Bob D to boosters over on PO.

    Dec. 8, 2014

    Dear Beaver Nation,

Last week’s announcement that Mike Riley would become the head coach at the University of Nebraska created new opportunities for Oregon State University and our football program.

We appreciate and thank Coach Riley for all that he contributed to the growth and success of the football program, our student-athletes and OSU. He and his staff will always be remembered for helping to return our football program to winning seasons, bowl victories and relevancy. We congratulate Coach Riley on his new opportunity and wish him great success.

As we move forward, the foundation for even greater success has been laid, and we will now focus on the opportunity to take the Oregon State football program to new heights. This is an exciting time for Beaver Nation. In hiring a new coach, our goals are to build on our record of football success and reignite fan excitement while winning the Oregon State way:

With great people—accomplished coaches and student-athletes.
By outworking our opponents every day.
By building even stronger fan and donor support.
    By investing in best-in-class facilities.
And by doing everything we do with integrity.

At all times, everything we do will be about our student-athletes; new levels of success for the Beaver football program; and the tradition and mission of Oregon State University.

As I conduct this confidential national search I will consult with several OSU Stakeholders, including alumni, donors, faculty and former players, in addition to being assisted by well-connected professionals in the intercollegiate athletics and football arena. Be assured that every step of the way, we will follow state of Oregon rules to conduct a hiring process that includes interviewing qualified minority candidates.

President Ray and I are aligned in our shared vision and commitment to marshal the necessary resources to hire the right coach, invest in new and expanded facilities, and compete for Pac-12 Conference Championships.

Our next coach will be a winner. He and his staff will teach not just offense and defense, but life lessons, values and character. They will help guide our student-athletes to success in life and careers upon leaving OSU.

President Ray and I realize that Beaver Nation has a vested interest in this important hire. We understand the stakes and are committed to hiring a great coach that we can all be proud of and who is excited about coming to OSU. I assure you there will be excitement, even greater pride, and a new winning tradition for Beaver football.

    Go Beavs!

  15. As much as I don’t like seeing recruits bolt and some of our good assistant couches bolt in the search process I really hope the knucklehead (Bobby-D) really puts some time and effort into this process and comes up with a good ALL-AROUND HC. One that can recruit, one that can help fund raising efforts, one that can actually manage the game clock, etc.
