Home Football Fall Practice Day 2

Fall Practice Day 2

79

Some good news regarding Seumalo — the coaches are easing him back into practice and using him at guard for now since Andrews is out, but he might move if and when Andrews returns. The expectation all around is that he will be ready to start game 1 barring any setback.

Regarding the QB battle, nothing really new today. Quarterbacks were throwing into the nets (rolling out and throwing from 10 yards away then throwing what would be WR screens), and Collins struggled and lost his cool a couple of times, appearing to be frustrated about his performance. He struggled hitting the net, as did the transfer QB Garretson. Mitchell and Marcus did well in those drills, but McMaryion missed open wide receivers in his 2nd team reps. Based on this and yesterday’s performance, Mitchell probably has the upper hand at this point.

On the second team, Paul Lucas stood out. Very explosive, froze DBs, and ran good routes for a converted RB. He would have scored several touchdowns had McMaryion delivered better balls.

  1. Really appreciate the update! As always, it’s going to get real when the players put their pads on! That’s for hitting/tackling and also QBs throwing, receivers catching, etc. S Collins (in my opinion) is the guy because I think he gives the Beavs the best chance to win (his legs and his arm) even though he may be struggling a bit right now, with pads on during Spring, he was a head (at least) above the other QBs easily from what I saw and was hearing from others. Great to hear about Paul Lucas. I predict that he will be on the field this season (and it may be more as a returner but…). I think he will make a big play or two against Weber St. to start his career.

    Go Beavs!

    • Yeah has there been any word yet if Lucas will redshirt or not? I heard undecided, but not sure if that’s changed with injuries (with Cook out, I’d like to see him get a look at RB). Sands might get a look at RB, too, with that injury. I heard good things about him so far.

      • Play him while you can. I just worry about him staying academically eligible. But after reading the past articles, maybe GA will crack down on keeping this guys on it with their grades?

Been off the grid this weekend on vacation. Just going through and reading the articles, all great stuff. It has me more optimistic than when I left for the weekend.

How well are they running the ball?

      • Sounds like Lucas is showing signs of picking things up pretty quickly. If the qb’s can learn their timing with him, he’ll be a home run threat any time he’s out there. Pretty good for a guy who has played rb in highschool

      • The media is really perpetuating it. At media day they even said that to him…something along the lines is you’re the clear favorite, it’s your job to lose. I forget the details, but I remember thinking the media had handed him the job.

        • That’s the new KEZI guy, if I remember correctly he asked after the first scrimmage during if Seth solidified himself as the starter for next year? hahahaha

Collins is definitely the sexy pick.

      • Not just what I have heard but what I have seen. Besides the technical differences that I saw in the Spring there was the production, or lack there of in the case of Nick Mitchell. Mitchell had a terrible Spring! Collins definitely has that “it” factor to make plays with his legs but he is also coming along as a passer slowly. But like I said, anyone who watched all 3 QBs play, and truly believes that Seth Collins is not the best option to win games, I severely disagree with them! MM nor NM have the play making ability as a runner for sure (decisions, speed, agility, etc.). I will not say that Collins is a stud passer yet but he’s at least as good as the others and then you add in his abilities to keep plays alive and create positive plays with his legs, this makes him the best option while boosting him far ahead of the other two. Go look at the Spring Game numbers and there are some highlights. If Nick Mitchell or Marcus McMaryion are the starting QB, we may not win a game! No joke!

I’ll be honest here! I don’t think Mitchell will stay here next season with Garretson, Collins and Moran (incoming DT QB). I honestly do not think that Andersen has any faith in him or McMaryion at this point but there’s not a lot of other choices right now!

        Go Beavs!

  2. The twitter feed reminds me. I don’t think it’s the first installment of The Drive tomorrow. But it looks like the regular training camp reports are starting with us tomorrow at 9pm (replay at 11pm and on Tues. at 7pm).

And if anyone wants to get all misty for our dearly departed coach, you can start at 6pm with <Pac 12 (really 10 at the time) Classics. It will be our 2007 Cal game, where we won despite Riley having clock issues at the end of a game and making a boneheaded play to lose… wait… I mean because of that. Then it will show our two conference wins in the 60 minute format. 10pm will be another 60 minute showing of the Utah game (evaluate our new D?). And midnight brings in a full showing of the 2000 CW… which I actually think is worth taping. I haven’t watched it since the game itself.

        • Why does taking it to Notre Dame 40-9 get a negative? Even if Chad dropped the ball before he crossed the goal line…

          Oh well Go Beavs!

      • Wish i could have gone to that one. I went to the ’98 one which is still my favorite live event experience of all time. Better than beating #1 USC

        • I was at the USC game in 2000 where they broke the 33 year hex against the Trojans. Possum ran onto the field, USC players were all backing off. I don’t think they had any idea what the fuck it was lol. Ken Simonton, scoring from about 35 yards out on 4th and 1 late in the 4th to seal the deal. I met a pretty cool young freshman player after the game on the field and shook his hand. His name was Richard Siegler

          • Richard Siegler was an absolute STUD! As a freshmen who was playing MLB at 205 lbs and doing it very well, that’s impressive (Frosh All American)! One of my favorite revenge games for the Beavs was when we had Fresno St in Corvallis 2002, the year after David Carr and B Berrian (two very good NFL Players eventually) embarrassed us in 2001. But in 2002, you could tell the Beavs were out for blood and won 59-19 (I’m still looking for a DVD of this game, please let me know if any of you have or have seen it anywhere)! Siegler housed a pick in that game and helped the Beaver D absolutely dominate that day! Awesome game!

            Go Beavs!

    • It’s more like USATF making athletes sign an ambiguous contract which forces them to break whatever contracts by which they are bound in order to secure money for the governing body itself. Symmonds has signed these forever. They’re boilerplate no matter the sponsor, though I’m sure the sponsors (all, not just Nike) make sure the hazy verbiage and broad interpretations are upheld year after year.

He’s just now at a point where he can take a stand and not be run over by the machine. And it has as much to do with the timing of the breakdown of the IOC and IAAF doing exactly what USATF is doing. There is an excess of money being made by the governing bodies, and the athletes see almost none of it.

Should the sponsors be more aware of the plight of the athletes, more than just signing who they can for endorsements? It would be in their best interests to do so in the long run. But they don’t operate beyond the current fiscal cycle.

    • “Everybody seems to blame the kid. He was put in a bad situation. He did what he was supposed to do twice and was misguided. When (the new coaching staff) got here, we made sure there was no miscommunication.” (about Peko) from the Eggers article.

Was that on Riley or NCAA or both? Infuriating.

      • Idk… further down he seemed to exonerate the previous regime. And I thought he spent the extra year at Saddleback, which used up his redshirt. So the last time he would have played would be 2012? I’m guessing they’re talking about each of the two years he could and should have come out of Juco to play?

    • Thanks for the links. Excited about the D line this year.

I might just be looking for things to pick at, but some things that stuck out to me from the Grimble/Peko article:
      1. The current D line coach says Peko was misguided twice on academics by the previous staff.
      2. The previous staff not bothering to even offer Peko because he was committed to MSU.
      3. Grimble being 45 pounds lighter. That seems like a lot of not necessarily good weight the previous staff had or allowed him to carry.

      • Respectfully, I can’t stand hearing people try to blame their guidance counselor or whoever about their problems. You are in college. Put on your big boy panties and figure it out.

        • We’re talking in the context of the article where coach says, “Everybody seems to blame the kid.” So this hypothetical doesn’t include that.

Whatever the reason, he sees an end game of next summer. So it somehow worked out for the best for him in that regard. Now he’s just hoping he can pay OSU back for taking care of him.

          I like that sentiment.

        • ?

Why is the guidance counselor collecting a paycheck if they can’t tell a student what classes they need? Your comment makes zero sense. Of course he is going to trust the authority.

Sounds like the new staff might have sat down with everyone and hammered out what needed to be done. Sounds like the old staff didn’t, and the guidance counselor dropped the ball. That’s how I read it.

          • I think Riley took care of him too. There was a point where he just couldn’t get the classes right at Saddleback, and he couldn’t stay there any longer due to cost. Riley said screw it, and he Prop 48’d the kid. We went through it with Roberto for different reasons. And that means he had to be fully enrolled at OSU for one year, show progress toward graduation and lose that year of eligibility before he was ruled eligible.

    • I keep saying I think the Beavs will win 5 games, but if the depth gets depleted before the season even starts then that won’t happen. These injuries are so frustrating.

      • The ASOSU has done a consistently fine job of getting very good deals for themselves. And they do a better job of turning around and giving it to the students. This one looks like a home run.

        • Have any of you guys been to the new SEC in the middle of campus? It’s absolutely gorgeous, and KBVR looks like it could compete with KOIN 6 right NOW.

Just a shame that the mental health facility is still in Snell (ugh)

          • Snell needs to be torn down. renovation of that thing is throwing good money after bad. The Dixon project needs to be funded, or CAPS needs to be given a safe, temporary workplace while Snell goes away.

Of course, Snell is the friggin’ Hotel California of temporary workplaces.

    • Brian Rathbone is turning into a media machine. Been trying to watch his periscope videos when i can, and when i’m on blitz, his content has been the only stuff worth reading, and then he finds time for an 1.5 hour podcast? I cant keep up with all of the content. Nice to see barometer sports stepping their game up.

    • On that barometer podcast they said some sites had him rated as a 5* guy, although i havent seen any evidence of that. Espn is the highest i’ve seen, at 4

    • He got even more when he stayed at cc for another year. I believe Texas am, Wisconsin, Lsu, probably a few more came at him once he didn’t get accepted. He recommitted the following year
