Minnesota Post Game

351

I guess the first questions should be: can it get any worse? If not, then we can only go up from here.

That being said, this is the worst team I’ve ever seen in my 15 years of watching OSU. I imagine this is a lot like the teams of the 70s and 80s that diehard (i.e. lunatics) suffered through.

I know I/we made a pact to give QBs 6 games, but given the amount of rotation at the position I’m antsy and don’t want to. I feel I’ve seen enough to say Luton sucks. Examples: fumbles early in the game, screen pass that would have moved the chains, and he throws it 5 yards over the backs head. A chance to run for a first and he runs out of bounds, 16-28 passing for a 4.8 average, had a man wide open in the flat and passed it up, then on the following play the Tall Bozo (official new nickname) holds it forever and the OL gets a holding call.

This is enough.

Combine it with (a) my past history analyzing QBs and (b) CaliBeav seeing Luton at Venture and saying he was exactly like this, and this is what we have.

Gary Andersen hitched his wagon to this guy. It might set OSU back decades. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Petras get spooked and decommit. I would. All they can sell is playing time and rhetoric. They’re even killing Nall’s draft stock by playing with the shiny new toy, so they can’t sell putting (Riley’s) guys in the league.

Remember those guys who told us to “Be careful what you wish for” when we hired Andersen? Well, I’d rather take the risk on Andersen than stay with Riley, but we have to admit they have technically been right so far. I was also very wrong in thinking we’d beat MN. Our D did do better, as I thought, but they really haven’t been as bad as the stats suggested the first few games. The O continually puts them in short fields (responsible for 27 of the points off turnovers vs CSU, for example) and makes them stay on the field too long. Happened again tonight. A boring QB who moved the chains and keeps the D off the field sure would be nice…

What is GA going to say in press conferences? What is he going to sell to recruits besides playing time? If your only pitch is playing time then you’re into the bottom of the barrel for recruits.

There’s an obvious chemistry problem on this team, and it’s not going to get better. GA acknowledged it in one of the pre-season interviews. I saw it with the way Nall spoke about Luton and other issues on the interview tape. It’s obvious in the games — D looks fed up each time the O puts them in a shitty position. The problems to me start on the O. If this team were moving the chains and putting up points things would look much, much different.

Minnesota isn’t even a physically gifted team. Buffalo manhandled them, and they looked mediocre at everything. The gifted teams should keep GA up at night. That should be his punishment for running the best QB on the roster out of town, ruining team chemistry in the process, and leaving us with a gunslinging Tall Bozo and MWC (at best) coordinators.

If it were possible to fire the entire staff tomorrow it should be done. I’ve seen enough GA to know he can’t be trusted in evaluating key personnel (notably QB) or coaches (notably OC). He handed Seth the job without merit, handed Luton the job without merit, handed McGiven the job without merit, and in the process demoted more established players (McM) and coaches (Baldwin). It’s plain and simple reckless management.

  1. I’m not gonna defend Luton but I am still far from convinced that McM would have this team winning. That said, I do buy the theory that McM leaving was the straw that broke the camel’s back and the team has virtually quit on Andersen.

I haven’t seen enough of Luton to decide he sucks. There is talent there and with a quality offensive coach I think he could be a decent QB. This team has no such quality in the coaching.

I am convinced Andersen is garbage and so is his staff.

    • Again, who says he was run off?

He didn’t do what he needed to do to win the job. Then he ran away. Oh… he didn’t do what he needed to do to beat out Luton or Garretson. So let’s forget about evaluations. Being a milquetoast who runs away only confirms that decision and confirms he doesn’t care about his teammates.

And again, I condition those statements with the caveat that he may have just had family matters he needed to deal with, which is the only reason anyone goes to Fresno… if they have to go there.

      • go back and study last season from wash st game on and tell me that QB doesn’t deserve to start day 1 of this year…

either way we were going to be an underdog @ col st…. so is starting Luton over MCM really make you better enough/are you sure Luton is going to be good enough of the time to warrant naming him the starter therefore likely loosing MCM to transfer.

        horrible decision

        • He doesn’t deserve the start. Clearly u didn’t actually study objectively. Too many people on here that think they know football but clearly do not.

        • You want to point to MM’s Wazzu game? Do you not remember what happened in the 3rd quarter of that game?

          Yikes!

We’re talking about a QB who was only successful when he was just told to hand the ball off. He refused to run the ball, so he was told to run it on calls from the sideline. I think Luton could benefit from a lot of that conservative playcalling. But that’s another story. Well, I think that is the pertinent story. But it’s a different one than who you think MM is/was.

      • If I believed that Gary Andersen held a truly open competition at which 3M was given a fair shot that would be one thing. Play on the field plus Andersen’s history says otherwise.

        • If you want something to be proven on the field instead of in practice, then Garretson is the QB who has had the best game at that position in the last three years. The Cal game last year means that he has earned the starting spot.

          No?

  2. I’m having a hard time admitting how wrong I was about Andersen. I thought he was good, and I’m almost never wrong, and to be THIS WRONG is so alarming. Granted, I only thought he was good because he turned around Utah State and never actually saw him. But man, he also said all the right things. It’s just amazing how bad he is. It’s amazing how he doesn’t believe in a merit system and how reckless he is with not only his players but his staff. Just moving everyone around because he’s impatient, and somehow believing others will accept those moves and it won’t have rippling effects. Just so bizarre and hard to reconcile. He’s awful.

    • I didn’t watch his Utah State teams closely. Maybe they were so awful he could get players buy into “changing the culture” or whatever he sold them on. What I’d like to know is, given his record of hiring coordinators otherwise, how he ever landed Dave Aranda.

        • I can buy that, but it’s still hard not to imagine his approach to player management not wrecking team chemistry, but maybe if you’re at a place which has been losing for a good decade and don’t stick around long enough for your act to wear thin you can get away with it.

    • We should have known he was reckless when he ditched Wisconsin for Oregon State and he couched it as some higher power telling him that was the place he needed to be.
No, he just wanted to go to a place known for letting their coach get away with collecting a paycheck while not actually producing.

    • I like Beau the most right now but warming to Jonathan. Think he probably is learning good habits from Petersen and hr always was smart. Fans would give him support and with success he would be well loved. Timing could be very good as GA should be down to his final year in 2018 if the stinkbomb continues as seems likely. Smith will definitely do more to earn 2+ million a year.

Beau is attractive in idea that he has a vision and won’t be an excuse monster like GA. I think he is much more capable than GA of sticking to a plan to construct and achieve his vision.

Leavitt has some appeal as well if he found a good OC as he is much more sound in defensive philosophy and capability than GA.

    • None of that is happening unless Andersen resigns. As noted, he is signed through 2021 so we’re screwed. When Leach was available Riley’s contract blocked that option (though, I don’t think OSU had the balls to do it…fans said Leach was terrible, etc).

  3. Is this team still so thin that the good tough players who graduated last year like Stanton and DeCoud have not been replaced? I don’t think it’s just QB’s with Anderson and his lack of talent evaluation. Tim Cook made a NFL roster and basically received no caries after his performance against the Huskies.

    • Wow thank god someone noticed this besides me… i recall seeing photos of him before last year and thought he was a specimen, then played great, albeit in garbage time vs Washington. Not surprised at all he made an NFL roster.

I actually think we should have made a bowl game last year with good coaching if you look at our roster and schedule. that is if Marcus plays from the beginning.

      • Ahem, whilst not having the football acumen of those who contribute to this site – I have commented on at least 3-4 occasions, beginning last year – about Tim Cook. I don’t recall the game (and won’t look it up) where it wasn’t garbage time and he contributed – 100 yards? and was hardly used again the rest of the season. I, too, hoped he would make it on an NFL roster – although last I looked, he was on the practice squad.

        • Last he looked, he was on Jax’s practice roster.

There’s more to being a contributing member of a team on the college level than just being a player. If he did something to be in the dog house, we have no right to know what it might have been. Most kids make their mistakes in public, so we find out. But if he went and slept with someone’s wife or some other imaginative feat, we don’t get to know these things. Maybe he just missed a class. We don’t get to know that.

Some people don’t get to play college ball but still end up in the NFL. Le Garrette Blount comes to mind.

  4. I’m really bad at analyzing football coaches, apparently. Except for Riley. That was so obvious.

But I was way wrong about Shaw. And now it seems Taggart is might be good (maybe?) and Andersen is awful. Had that totally backwards.

  5. It’s sad. I can watch women’s basketball and expect a well coached, hard fought game, and I get it. Then I get to watch football shit the bed. Nothing works, but we keep trying the same 10 God damn plays over and over and over. At this point GAs version of “row the boat should be “shit the bed”.

When we hired GA, I personally was going to give him 4 years of support, no matter. Unless he gets rid of Mcfuckhead, I’m out. I’m convinced that if Mcgivens wife had a gun to her head and he was told to call a run, he’d pass it. He cant help himself. It’s just reckless stupidity at this point. And I’m not convinced Clune is any smarter.

  6. Nebraska hired Riley because he was not like the coach they dismissed. Many of us liked Andersen because he appeared the anti-Riley. Ha!

Both will be fired for coaching reasons…contrast bias at work?

    • I think there was bias. But honestly, how many of us saw Andersen coach? I never saw a single game.
I just saw his record at WI and how he turned Utah State around quickly. Then saw him speak and he seemed so genuine and like a man with a plan. Man, so fooled. My lesson learned is to watch games of the coaching hires.

      • Me too, but I looked closer (recently)and thought his resume thin under scrutiny.

As said above, his rationale for coming to Oregon State was completely flakely; many of us were happy somebody who had won CHOSE Oregon State football.

  7. The crazy part is that when Anderson was hired he ran off all the pocket passers saying that he needed a qb that could run. Then, he eventually ends up with a good pocket passer that could also run (MM). Then he runs that guy off for a bad pocket passer that can’t run.

    • I took a walk just now and was thinking exactly that…how each year the QB got progressively less mobile. My theory is he fell in love with WSU’s offense. It explains why he made another reckless move and brought in Phillips (wasn’t he more an “Air Raid” or run and shoot guy?) and totally changed the offense/identity again. This after the players just found their identity on their own running the ball all over Oregon.

Having played sports, nothing loses a team after than not having a meritocracy in place. The McGiven/Baldwin thing and the McM/Seth McM/DG McM/Luton things are morale killers.

Zero consistency with the coaches, the offensive scheme, the message to the team, and a non-merit system. What a disaster.

      • But they aren’t even running air raid type plays. They have four fucking RB’s who could probably start for many D-1 teams, shouldn’t that kind of dictate where you want to go with the offense. Granted, another issue could be that the O-Line is shit this year also.

    • MM can’t run, and he’s about 70% a pocket passer. He has a noodle arm that removes about 30% of the playbook.

What pocket passers were run off?

      LDR? Mitchell? MM?

They all left of their own accord. LDR split as soon as he could. Good riddance to him. Mitchell turned out to be really bad, worse than LDR bad.

Can you imagine this program with LDR running a Riley offense… and a Banker D? PSU would have enjoyed last week a little more than they did.

There’s an argument to be made that Garretson or MM are better for this offense at this time because they simply don’t have the tools to try to make some of the mistakes Luton has made. I can buy that logic. I will not buy that either one of them is a “better” QB physically. It comes down to having a QB who is 70% competent and can run 70% of the playbook versus a QB who is 50% competent and can run all of the playbook. MM’s upside has only ever been 70% of the playbook. And it took him more than three years to get to 70% competency.

And apparently we need to ignore MM’s development was almost wholly under the current staff.

      • probably would help this braindead coaching staff to have 30% of the playbook not available… also MCM was mobile enough, see the first offensive play of civil war last yr…

we would/should rather have a qb with less of an arm and more running/scrambling ability to bail out a terrible O line. We aren’t gonna be flashy down field air raid with this crew of WRs also who are awful

play to your strength, use a at least some what mobile qb that can bail you out/scrap out random first downs with his legs, not one that looking to sling it down field to trevon bradford…

        • The WRs except for Bradford are fine. I don’t know what you’ve been watching. If you want to harp on Togiai’s “fumble,” think about it this way. If that play was in the end zone, those same refs would have called that play incomplete.

What GA can’t talk about is that those refs jobbed us on about a half dozen blatant plays that were game-changing in their nature. And it’s not that they were incompetent. It’s that they were biased.

For instance, the goal line run over Shemar Smith should have had a flag thrown for one of two reasons. First was the hands to the face that removed his helmet at the point of attack. Second was that he continued to play after his helmet was pushed off by the facemask. But if they throw the flag on Smith for continuing to play without a helmet, they shine a spotlight on why he wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Celestin spearing Pierce and not getting called for targeting was another. Pierce didn’t play well for the rest of the game. And I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he’s on concussion protocol.

    • Thinking this too….GA needs to stick to a system, would be better off with what he established the first two years — a mobile style of play that uses the mind, arm, and legs from what I remember. Luton has an ARM, at least MM had the legs and mind. MM a much better decision maker — at least he would tuck and run for 2+ yards, instead of statue pose for minus 8 yards, makes the next couple plays lean towards another pass attempt (2nd/3rd and long).

  8. Let’s make a list of coaches who would be good candidates for the HC position.

I’ll start with Beau Baldwin and Mike Houston. Houston won an FCS championship at James Madison. Previously he coached a triple-option offense at Citadel but upon getting to JMU adapted his philosophy to the strengths of his players, which was a spread offense.

    • Don’t get too far ahead of yourself. We are as stuck with GA as we were with Riley and his “lifetime” deal. He’s signed through 2021 and the AD is his Utah State buddy, Barnes. He can continue to collect checks as long as he can take the heat from fans.
Given how few fans there are anymore, this could take awhile.
Gary Andersen has us back in checkmate land.

  9. Gary Andersen: "It's not on those kids. I'm the one that hired the coaches, so it's all on me."— Gina Mizell (@ginamizell) September 10, 2017

Andersen on 2nd half D: "It's right back on me to find a way to hopefully fix it for these kids to give them a chance to be able to win."— Danny Moran (@DannyJMoran) September 10, 2017

    • Those quotes sound like they are coming from a confused and lost head coach. It feels like the Pettibone era to me, a couple of hopeful seasons and then back to shit again.

      • I think those are reasonable statements. What sounds lost?

He sounds like he’s willing to make some hard decisions that we’ve noted need to be made.

It just sounds like he’s saying what you wanted to say, so you needed to make up something on the fly.

I don’t really mean this^^^ But I wanted to show it to you because it’s the same logic you just applied to his statements. It’s pretentious and ignores the actual content.

        • Agreed….GA is owning up to it, hopefully he can find the right coaches to fit HIS formula. He knows how to win, he tried reinventing too much and got away from the fundamentals.

  10. I think clune will be fired soon. It’s just not working.

Not sure why the offense wants to push the pace with the defense having so many issues. Minnesota had the ball for 38 minutes!

  11. Why does anyone think Jonathan Smith would actually want this job? Sure, it’s his alma mater, but I’m sure he could get more appealing jobs. This one will look terrible if GA completely strikes out.

  12. I remember feeling so excited when I heard the news of Riley leaving for Nebraska. I was happy with us getting Andersen from Wisconsin. I will admit I was wrong about Andersen too. I agree with others that McM leaving did fracture this team.

So reality is what exactly?? Will the OSU AD and school actually ask for coaches to be fired? This is so painful to watch our football program struggle like this. I feel bad for the players stuck with this horrible coaching staff.

  13. All I know is, I am an alum, so by default, I’m a Beav for life…..that said, I have zero confidence in this coaching staff, and I have better things to do with my time besides watching our shit’s how of a team get blown out.

  14. I think we will give GA more time. He needs to make some changes on the assistant coaching level though unless things dramatically improve. These coaches just aren’t cutting it.

    • “… make some changes on the … coaching …”

Yeah, like sticking his boot squarely up their asses until his ankle doesn’t show … you know, to get their attention.

I’ve been saying for the past 4-5 threads that the problem is coaching. Listen up … we have a problem with the coaching staff – top to bottom!

  15. I have been a season ticket holder since 2000…. I am a 3rd generation Beaver…. never been embarrassed to say that until this fall..,.why when we have a bunch of capable backs are we in shotgun every down?….. this team is an embarrassment …. this will be the last year I buy season tickets…. I thought Anderson was the answer but each year we get worse.

    • I’m not 3rd generation and gave up my season tickets for life commitments a few years back but I feel the same way. No excitement for Beaver football left. This will probably be the first year that I don’t re-arrange my Saturday for Beavs games and instead just catch the games if they happen to fit my day.

I sort of listened on the radio today as I was driving home from my grandma’s 85th birthday but for the first time on a Saturday when I knew I wouldn’t be able to watch the game I never really cared. I knew they’d get destroyed and barely cared as it happened.

My mom who rode up to Washington with me was more invested and she isn’t even a Beaver. She kept trying to pep me up but even when they narrowed the score to 17-14 my reaction was “meh”

      • I’ve been setup this way since the Alamo Bowl….I’ve catch games when I can. Otherwise, bike rides in the breeze are really nice this time of year.

  16. Tonight became the debacle that didn’t have to happen. It seems like GA disappears in-game, then deflects post-game while claiming it is “on me”.

I was excited, but now have zero confidence or expectation while this staff is in place. Too bad for Beaver nation. Back to the dark ages may not be far off.

My preference for a replacement is to back up the brinks truck and get Harsin and his staff.

  17. I left halfway through the second quarter to go attend a party. Look like I made the right decision.

Unlike others here, I still think this season can be saved. It’s going to take McGiven being fired and Luton being demoted, though.

Or, alternatively, Luton being injured. I don’t wish injury on anyone, but that seems like it’s the only way McGiven will stop calling pass plays.

Also, a permanent commitment to the run game. Enough messing around with air raid stuff, especially with Luton.

    • Define “saved”?

They have to go 5-4 in conference to go .500 and make a bowl. That ain’t happening even if Tom Brady in his prime discovers another year of eligibility and chooses to spend the next 9 games in Corvallis so what does “saving” the season look like to you?

If they don’t go 0-9 in conference play I’ll honestly be shocked. This team is a dumpster fire.

      • “Saved” = Getting back to the same record we had last year (4-8) at worst, making a bowl at best.

After further thought, here is what I would do:

        1. Remove McGiven from playcalling duties at least, or fire him. Give offensive playcalling to Dave Baldwin again, and give him complete control over who ends up at what position in offense.

        2. Remove Clune from playcalling duties at least, or fire him. Have Andersen do playcalling for defense. Alternatively, have Chad Kauha’aha’a or Cory Hall take on that role.

I know people are really down on this team right now, but our issues aren’t down to having out-talented or out-classed players. Our issues are down to bad play calling, bad QB selection, and bad coaching in general. These issues are fixable, but only if Andersen is willing to make tough decisions.

        • These issues are fixable, but only if Andersen is willing to make tough decisions.

          Those should be easy decisions.

If GA had stuck with McM and Baldwin from the start, we might not be a great team, but we’d be a decent team with a firm identity and what GA said he wanted when he came in, which was a run/pass/smart QB. We’d probably throw a lot of short passes and a have good run game. Boring? Sure. But it would work until we recruited legit game changers into the program.

Now? I don’t know what we are. Might as well just throw hail marys every play.

That Baldwin move was huge for recruiting, BTW. When that happened I hear from recruits parents themselves that many recruits in the Bay area were pissed and wrote off OSU because of it. Baldwin has a very good reputation/clout around there. Ga just thinks he can make these reckless moves as if in a vacuum without any fall out.

          • Decisions that should be easy become harder when you have to tell someone you’ve worked with day in and day out that they’re fired, or that they’re being re-assigned essentially because they’re too incompetent. That’s probably why he’s let these issues fester over three games, I would guess.

It’s funny, really: Riley’s biggest fault was that he was too passive and took to long to change, while Andersen’s biggest fault seems to be he’s too impatient and is constantly trying to find quick fixes to evything.

          • Andersen’s biggest fault seems to be he’s too impatient and is constantly trying to find quick fixes to evything.

            Yep.

And the weird thing is he has no problem firing and demoting guys except the ones who seem to deserve it most.

    • Demoting McGiven and promoting Woods or even Baldwin would be the only thing necessary. Luton’s mistakes would be mitigated by that decision alone.

  18. I was a Riley supporter for a long time but he lost it in his last few years at OSU. I was happy he got the job at Nebraska and he is proving that he cannot be successful even at a major Univerity. I knew nothing about Andersen but bought into all the hype about how poor OSU was so fortunate to get such a Coach of his caliber. After giving him his two years and seeing progress, I was optimistic and bought into the idea that he had a plan. These 3 games make it look like there is no plan. He continues to play whack-a-mole with the QB. He has changed his offensive strategy every year. This defense reminds me of the no tackle Banker strategy. I think GA’s stubbornness is his undoing. He say’s the players are doing good at what they are teaching in practice. Maybe they are teaching the wrong things? This will only further cement into the minds of any future good Coach that no one can be successful at OSU. No one will remember that OSU was ranked #4 in the Nation just 17 years ago. Maybe the best College team in the Country.

  19. So Minnesota had 66 plays tonight. 58 were runshing, 8 were passing (and they were an efficient 7-8 on those passing plays)

Oregon State had 55 plays, with 26 rushing and 29 passing.
You think with 29 vs 8 total passimg attempts, we would have had more passing yards. Nope, they beat us through the air 158 to 145 total yards.

I won’t even mention our rushing yardage comparison.

    http://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup?gameId=400935265

    • And, it would be pretty easy to argue that in Nall, AP, and Johnson (intentionally leaving out Tyner) the Beavs have more talent at RB than Minnie.

      • The run game all stars with the offensive line and they are not creating the holes. That’s why A.P. started tonight because GA thought we had to exploit the edges more. It all goes back to fundamental blocking on offense and lack of tackling on defense.

        • I don’t disagree entirely, however, if there wasn’t so much emphasis in practice/teaching/player selection on pass protection I bet the OL would be better at run blocking. If dual TE sets and two RB formations were used occasionally that could also help.

And, maybe most significantly, if the Beavs got out of shotgun now and then, and emphasized quick handoffs in practice i’ll bet the run game would improve drastically.

        • It’s hard to keep holes open when you’re running a read option every single run play from shotgun. You have to mix up your formations and hand offs to keep the defense honest. Until that happens, we won’t be winning any games. Arizona and arizona state will now be losses and the civil war we might as well just give a final score of 77-7.

        • Pierce runs up the gut without delay. Because of that, he is able to bounce it when the D keys between the tackles. When Nall started doing that, he started having some success that he wasn’t having in the first two games. Then he fumbled.

  20. I can’t help but wonder what the Beav’s record would be now IF they had talent/experience/depth on the OL and DL.

Frankly, I don’t think a coaching change would make much difference until the team has a group of linemen who can play at this level.

So I fault the coaches more for not being able to bring in the linemen that this team is so sorely missing than I do for the calls that the OC is making. Imo the DC’s hands are tied because there’s just not enough talent on the DL for them to be competitive on D.

Riley left the cupboard bare and so far this coaching staff hasn’t been able to address the problem.

    • We have some very good O-linemen redshirting this year. And Woods gets them to play well when they don’t have to hold back the D for more than an O-line should.

That is one legit complaint about Luton. He held the ball too long a lot yesterday. Hell, he holds it too long on hand-offs. That he was even asked to drop back on so many first down plays is the biggest problem. So I have a hard time picking on the kid for doing less with less.

I think we need to key on the one constant on this team at the QB position over these three years. GA is now admitting that he should maybe step in and start managing that position instead of delegating it to someone.

  21. Another thing I wonder about is what are they doing at halftime?

It seems to me that there’s a glaring disparity when I look at the halftime adjustments the opponents are making compared to the product the Beavs put on the field in the 2nd half.

    • Just got back from the game and that was my #1 takeaway. YTD we have been woefully outcoached on halftime adjustments (or lack thereof). That is just awful.

Togiai was a huge disappointment today. Not sure if he’s just in his head or what, but the “best TE in the conference” accolades look laughable right about now. He seems to be this year’s Victor Bolden- one great play for every drive-killing bonehead move.

Really not on board with dumping all of this on Luton, at least from what I’ve seen on the field. He hasn’t been very good, but there are definitely positives aside from having a good arm. Mobility in the pocket and success rolling out are good to see. Worth noting- there were several bad snaps tonight and Luton fielded them well. If the Luton promotion damaged morale in the locker room I can buy that. I just don’t see him killing the offense. Game planning to focus on the run game and take pressure of the QB would also help a lot.

Other than the obvious coaching issues (adjustments?!), what really killed us tonight were TOs. Luton had one, but Nall and Togiai piled on too- and all came at just awful places for field position. We did get some pretty unlucky bounces, including MINN being able to recover a couple of their own fumbles.

  22. The anti Riley hysteria was at birther proportions so a large chunk of the fan bases was always going to get fooled by a tough talker. Now even I get to be an angry beaver.
More importantly, what is going on with Nall? Yeah, he fumbled and yeah Pierce was running hard but he is the defining player on this team and he’s mostly been a shadow. He’s already shown he can be productive when teams stack up against him, even that fumble was a great run until he took a great hit. It feels like the staff knows Nall fell into their lap by accident and they want to prove they don’t need him. I don’t care if we win another game this season if can watch Nall carry the ball 30 times a game. and we probably would win one if he did.

    • I think it’s because Nall is critical of things. For one, it’s been reported that after CSU he was unhappy with his workload. I’m sure GA knows that if I know that. And second, he seems to dislike Luton and/or thought McM should be the QB. I say the latter because of how he spoke about Luton in the post-game presser a few weeks ago. Called him “this guy” and with no love as Luton looked away and bit his lip. Seems like chemistry problems there.

  23. Some interviews up on Twitter. Morris and Willis basically call out the D and say players aren’t where they need to be, etc. Willis seems especially irked.

  24. One general comment, Riley vs Anderson:

I still think Anderson has outrecruited Riley. He just doesn’t seem to know what to do with the talent that he gets. That could end up being a good thing for our eventual next coaching change…

  25. Takeaways from tonight’s game:

Oregon State is not going bowling. This was their last chance to stay on track.
Heck, they’re probably going 1-11, based on what I’ve seen.

Not only has OSU been disappointing in their first three games, they’ve been, like a-margin-of-thirty-points-below-what-was-acceptable disappointing in all three

And those of us like me, who own season tickets and keep paying for them… Maybe I’m a masochist or just like going to the games live, but I sure ain’t seen any good football from this program for a loooong time.

  26. Just by reading how the beat writers from the Oregonian are covering this team, it is clear that they realize how fucked up this entire program is. Moran’s recap is brutal, and he wouldn’t do that if he felt he was burning any bridges. He can tell this program is in shambles, and it is, and it starts at the top.

  27. The McM thing just ate at me so badly, and now I feel like saying I told you so to so many sons-uh-bitches. And I sat there in the rain tonight and watched a terrible product not worth getting soaked over stink the place up, and thought,”seriously? now you are fucking with Ryan Nall as well? Seriously?” I’ve had season tickets for years but I’m done. I’m not going back.

      • I think Nall has obviously been hesitant and afraid to run between the tackles. Pierce has obviously been the better back to date. I would say Johnson is also better, but the sample is too small.

  28. The most telling comment of GA’s was that they don’t see the glaring holes in practice. That tells me that a large portion of our failure is gameday decision making and the other large portion is that the coaches aren’t focused on the right things. No wonder we saw a fair catch on the 2 yard line and the myriad of mental mistakes.

  29. Andersen did the same thing at Wisconsin trying to run off the pocket passers to bring in his handpicked dual threat juco guy. The spread offense sucked and the QB couldn’t hack it. Tall shiny new toy named Tanner Mcevoy. Andersen tried to force him onto the field but the fans and team saw that he wasn’t ready. He got lucky when you inherit James White and Melvin Gordon as running backs on your teams at Wisconsin.

    • And what do you think it did to team morale when the guy Andersen tried to run off (Stave) was one of the most respected members of the team and nobody thought Andersen’s guy actually won the job? Gordon was very clear that Stave should have been the starter. Can’t exactly go back to 3M and beg for him to start again though.

  30. I feel weird saying these, but I now realize at least Riley had a coherent offensive strategy/vision and was able to recruit players to make his pro style system work to some degree (I know it became diminishing returns over time). GA does not know what the fuck he wants. It starts with the QB and if you or your staff have no acumen in judging that position you are going to struggle year after year. I was always skeptical of Luton, if you can’t start at Idaho, you shouldn’t start at Oregon St. unless it’s clearly proven you’re late developer and there is a coaching staff in place that can improve you.

    • I guess if you’re going to change your offensive philosophy every year, you might as well run off all the guys who fit the old philosophy. Torch that bridge behind you. It might also help if when you implement the new philosophy you have some idea of what it is. There’s almost no connection between what the coaches are saying about the offense and what actually gets run.

  31. As Dickens wrote in a Tale, or was that Tail, of Two Cities, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times….”

No denying that he first two games were not aberrations. The Beavs suck. GA’s team looked like the one with the first year head coach. Fleck had the better game plan and stuck with the run. That was the run/pass ratio I expected from the Beavs this year. D must not have watched any game film as the first pitch and catch for the TD was the exact play, run at the same point of the game, by the same player against Buffalo. It appears the only bowling this team will be doing is after the season at the local AMF lanes. Year three of GA is a gutter ball.

  32. The pissed off part of me wants GA to lose the remaining games in blowout fashion. But as a Beav I know that the kids deserve a better coaching staff and deserve to win games. What I want to happen is for GA to realize that he doesn’t have Power 5 caliber OC. Heck this is McGiven’s first power 5 experience. Mcgiven has given no indication of running successful offense at this level. Since GA says he doesn’t touch the offense, it should mean mcgiven is the problem.

If GA chooses loyalty over business decision, then he’s definitely not a power 5 coach, just like Riley.

  33. It seems like the best thing right now is to put Baldwin back in charge and have the O line focus on run blocking. Go back to the actual run first spread including running the QB whether that be Luton or DG.

  34. Guys, guys, settle down it’s all just Rope-A-Dope. All that matters is conference games and getting to the Rose Bowl. With these 3 games tape to game plan for what team isn’t going to overlook the mighty Beavs? Nall and AP are just being rested so they’re ready to go for the meat of the schedule. And won’t the opponents be surprised when Clune lets the dogs out and the D actually puts pressure on the QB, hell, they may even get a sack or two.

  35. Wow we fucking blew that opportunity. Really expected better! I guess we really don’t have anyone on the roster that any other power 5 team wanted (with a few exceptions) so it shouldn’t be too surprising but geez this was embarrassing.

This coaching staff is losing lots of credibility. Hard to imagine that everyone thought that a guy who couldn’t even play for Idaho was going to be PAC 12 QB. Why, because he’s tall? The QB from last year was better. That position is so important in college football. Question is where will the next win come from? Arizona or Arizona State maybe?

  36. “Good morning Coach Andersen… My name is Roger. I have a grass seed farm out by Tangent.

This morning I found four large wheels in my east field. My neighbor says they might belong to your football team. Says that he heard the wheels have come off the program. Let me know if you will be needing them this year and I’ll get them back to you.”

  37. What’s mark helfrich’s schedule look like for the rest of the season? Fire mcgiven and hire him as our OC? We want pace of play and someone at the OC to run the offense, there’s a guy who can do that for us. As for the defensive side, I haven’t a clue whose out there and available.

On another note, will San Jose state go bowling this year and which one? Brennan appears to have hired a great staff.

    • I hope you aren’t serious about Helfrich? Talk about “clueless”? – his picture is in Funk & Wagnalls there and under “inept” as well.. As an Oregon product, I hate to see OSU floundering and hope you find some way to make it work. Eugene and Corvallis are hard sells for a lot of the top players, but when coaching sucks, you pretty much give up any opportunity to bring in real talent but. if you manage to, bad coaching sucks the heart out of a team. Helfrich and some of the coaches that weren’t getting it done last year lost the team and it is hard to win when you have less than 1/2 of the team trying.

  38. Andersen’s post game comments are actually positive. I think he and the entire program were under the delusion that improvement in year 3 was going to be automatic. He’s now coming down to earth. He’s cut out the cheesy quotes, and identified the biggest problems under his control: the coordinators. As I said, he needs to take over the defense immediately, maybe give Baldwin more offensive control, and fire both coordinators at the end of the season. He’s got a few more years, so hope for the best.

He is showing the same tendency that his mentor, Whittingham, has had at Utah for 12 seasons: a complete mismanagement of offensive staffing. Trouble is, he doesn’t have the defense and special teams to rely on. If he did, he should take another page from Whitt, do the game management thing to rely on D and ST to win some games. 3M probably would have been a little better at this, but he wouldn’t have won more games. I think Luton could be semi effective in a power run game to take the top off defenses throwing to wide open WRs. But, the OC doesn’t get that, or realizes its not possible with this OL.

I think a younger Andersen would turn this around. He was legit at USU, I watched some of his games as I’m a Utah alum as well. Go watch them play Auburn, Wisconsin, Utah, and BYU. Exactly what we want to see at OSU. Maybe buy-in was easier there with the whole LDS background. He also lucked out with Keeton and Aranda (final season). The troubles is, as I alluded to last thread, I think he’s going Riley post 2009 Civil War- giving up and looking forward to retirement.

His player management is obviously a concern. He becomes fascinated with certain players. For example, Cook should have started last season, and Pierce this season. But, they don’t have enough talent on either the DL or OL to do anything. So, in year 3, recruiting is becoming a big concern. In 3 seasons they have not found a P5 caliber QB.

I don’t know why in the hell people want Jonathan Smith. UW fans aren’t even happy with him as OC. Seems like a Helfrich to me. Andersen was more proven than any of the coaches people have listed. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out, and it almost never does at OSU. They should just go triple option or go down league to the MWC.

  39. I was suspicious about GA’s handling of players from the start. However, I do think GA and staff have done well in recruiting. I think this team currently has the talent to take on other Pac teams.

But we don’t have Pac-level coaches, they’re only recruiters. Baldwin might be the exception as a coach, but as I recall even he only seemed able to manage one well-designed scoring drive per game, back when he had the OC reins.

Angry is right, meritocracy is out the window–the coaches RECRUIT saying you’ll get what you earn, which sure sounds good, but GA has a habit of making decisions based on whatever little resentments (or whatever word could describe what’s in his head) instead–Nall seems to be the latest victim of that, with his shamefully few touches compared to what he’s earned and what hiis talent would demand.

I just feel bad for the players. As the most obvious example, I believe that with competent coaching we have–right now–a stable of running backs who should be gaining national attention.

    What a sad disaster.

  40. Jim Wilson made an interesting comment on the post game show, comparing OSU’s current rebuild to what WSU had to go through under Leach. Now, I don’t remember much about the Cougars recent rise except that to start they looked about as bad as we’ve done so far this year, so if there’s any WSU fans in our midst, I’d ask them: does anything here look similar to what you had to go through for a few years before getting the program to where it is currently? I would be curious to hear a reply.

    • WSU NEVER looked anything close to this bad under Leach. Jim Wilson is making a ridiculous comparison. Yes, Leach had two 3-9 seasons (years 1 and 3) but neither of those teams looked this bad and he took WSU bowling in year 2.

Sorry but Jim Wilson is making a ridiculous comparison and you shouldn’t take it seriously.

      • The #1 difference is that Leach runs a very specific offense and had very little talent on the roster. After he got more talent he showed tangible improvement. Plus his team has the “advantage” of having a clearly defined offensive identity.

        • Which to me is why you always hire an offensive minded head coach or if you do hire a defensive minded head coach he better be open to finding an OC that isn’t a buddy but actually has a proven track record (i.e. Wilcox hiring Baldwin at Cal).

  41. Honestly Luton looks even worse than when I saw him. At Ventura it was at least clear he had mastery of that offense also the dumb throws he made accept for a 2 brutal ones in the Fullerton game were because he was “giving his guy a chance to make a play”. With us his accuracy has been terrible 80% of balls are late and there have been the dumb decisions to boot.

I can’t fathom him looking better (enough) than Marcus to win the job. Like in boxing you generally have to knock out the champ not win in a decision. That decision is just looking so bad right now and likely a large part of what is wrong with team morale

  42. Just got up the nerve to watch the post game presser. A lot of silent pauses after questions being asked followed with, ‘I don’t know the answer to that question.’ ‘That question will have to be answered by the offensive coaches.’ ‘It’s on me, I hired these coaches and it’s a team I’m in charge of, so I get it.’

If he gets it then he needs to start evaluating his coaching staff. He sounded deafeated, disappointed, hurt, and really unsure what he’s doing and maybe even second guessing why he came to Oregon State in the first place. He sounds a lot like my high school head coach where he is so disconnected from his players without even realizing the players don’t play his style of ball because he’s not stepping in and being directly involved. Pj fleck appears to engage his players and talk to them one on one and as a team. Anderson took a back seat approach this season by being a figure head instead of micro managing and being a part of the decisions of players and personnel.

    • Yeah, it makes you wonder what Andersen is actually doing in practice. He’s now claimed he doesn’t see this stuff in practice, he didn’t know why Jay Irvine didn’t play, and all the quotes above. So what does he do, ride the slip and slide?

He needs to reinstate Baldwin and admit he never should have promoted McGiven, then take over the D for the year so he’s involved. Those two things might salvage something where we win 4 games again. He needs to admit his own errors to the team and public. If he wants to talk about “my fault” and all this then man up and be specific and mention Baldwin by name, mention McM, mention promoting guys not based on merit. If he can’t look in the mirror and do those things, then we have found his flaw (and every coach has some) and he is doomed to fail. For all his talk about honesty he sure does seem to like lying to himself.

      • I asked the question above; “it’s on me” is simply WORDS, actions should follow, especially when those words are so oft repeated.
What exact actions should follow may be debatable but it’s hard to argue that continually repeating those words will have any positive effect.

      • The confusing thing about the Baldwin demotion is he is still being paid more than McGiven. Baldwin is getting $435k/yr while McGiven and Woods are getting $375k/yr. Take that money and redistribute to pay for the right guy to be an OC. I’m pretty sure they could find a young, hungry inside receivers coach for $200k and then at least pay for a decent OC.

  43. Tweet from the @FootballASU account:
“If you feel the need to Tweet/DM degrading and insulting comments at our student-athletes, please direct it to this account instead. Thanks.”

  44. I’ll read this thread later but I want to post my two cents before my opinions are influenced..

If the Offensive Coordinator is not replaced this week, GA loses all credibility as the leader of this program (if he hasn’t already).. I have maybe never seen worse play calling than I have the first three games of this season.. Any moron knew before the season started this offense needed to revolve around the run game.. The complete abandonment of that premise in the very first game of the season was arguably the ruin of this team..

Luton has stuggled, but in the poor kids defense, and I’ve said this before, the play calling DOES NOTHING to help the QB.. Luton is not the best player in the world.. But I would encourage everyone to go easy on the young man, when this is clearly an error in coaching.. LUTON IS NOT A TALL BOZO.. LUTON IS TALL AND IS COACHED BY BOZOS.. Please get that straight..

The defense is horrendous to begin with, but our play calling on offense, which leads to them being on the field all game does nothing to help them, neither do the turnovers..

The offensive play calling, to me is the root of all evils at this point, it hurts the offense and the defense.. MCM is gone.. That can’t change.. Any hope of correcting this mess this season revolves around changing the plan on offense to a run oriented attack.. How this was lost on this coaching staff before week 1 is beyond my ability to understand..

LAST THING.. At the start of the broadcast last night the announcers proclaimed that GA had taking a “more hands on approach” or was “more involved” in the defensive game plan.. I don’t remember the exact quote.. WTF WTF WTF does that even mean?? You’re the head coach who is supposedly a defense first guy, you should be heavily involved in the game plan EVERY WEEK.. YOU ARE THE HEAD COACH!! It’s YOUR game plan..

YOU’RE THE HEAD COACH, tell McGiven to RUN THE BALL.. Tell him to do that.. YOU ARE THE BOSS..

What is even going on right now……..

    • Isn’t the head coach supposed to be doing something DURING the game, as well? Question: I recall other teams firing assistants and even head coaches immediately after a terrible game and can’t imagine that will happen with Andersen but is McGiven under contract?

    • Great point on personal criticisms and name-calling of the amateur student athletes! I hate that. The coaches, who make 6 or 7 figures off those amateur athletes are fair game, IMO.

    • Bwahahaha that is totally how this feels with this team. The coach contradicts his authority by saying we can’t do that, but allows the team to keep doing it anyway until he gets overrun by his own players.

  45. If there aren’t any coach firings or demotions or any changes, how many players decide to quit the team all together this season and transfer to another team next season and play somewhere else? If I have the option of going to play for Portland state or another FCS or FBS team, wouldn’t I take it? I bet Nall either transfers or declares after this season. Would not surprise me in the least.

  46. Maybe I just don’t know what a college football head coach does, because we’ve been seeing the same shit for the last decade. Before every game our head coach has said they want to run more than pass. Then during the game we pass more than run. Then after the game the head coach says he wishes we would have ran the ball more. What. The. Fuck? Do our head coaches run the team on hopes and wishes???

  47. As someone stated earlier “…it starts at the top…”. I’d like to take that and kick it up a level or two higher, like with Dr. Ray.

Because of his decision (didn’t he get his PhD in economics from Stanford no less?) OSU hired a coach for about double what they were paying the previous coach.

Now this is a school whose athletic teams were constantly losing money so kept going further into debt and this resulted in athletic facilities and coaching staffs which were minimal/marginal at best.

The school couldn’t afford to do a complete upgrade of the football stadium, and then there’s Gill…… ugh.

It’s now becoming obvious that the school has hired a football coaching staff that’s apparently no better than Mountain West caliber and paying through the nose for them.

So since they ended up with Mountain West type folks wouldn’t it have been better if OSU had hired an up and coming lower division head coach and paid him no more than what Riley was making and spent that $1 MILLION PLUS that they’re paying the current staff on improving the facilities and paying down the debt?

I haven’t visited the facilities of the other Pac-12 schools so I don’t know how they compare to the OSU facilities. But I do know the OSU facilities had better be pretty darned good because, since there’s no night life to speak of in Corvallis, the winter weather is shitty, etc. etc. etc. the facility, the coaching staff and the education have to be top notch.

So Dr. Ray relied his economics background and on bobby d and his committee and took a significant financial gamble. So far that gamble is looking like it’s going to come up snake eyes.

Imo someone needs to take a careful look at the decisions Dr. Ray has made (for example not firing bobby d years ago) and make a determination as to him being worthy of being president of this school.

And because this has gotten way too long I won’t even get into Dr. Ray’s ability to raise something like $1B for the school but nothing significant (like finishing the football stadium) for athletics. Oh that and erasing/restructuring the bonds/loans the athletic department have with the outside world and bringing that in house.

Bottom line: How do the athletic facilities (I’m talking basketball and football) compare with the rest of the Pac-12 and if they don’t whose fault is that? Also, if they don’t doesn’t that mean the coaching staffs already have one or two strikes against them when it comes to recruiting?

  48. It would be interesting to catalogue the post-game comments from these games. GA needs to come to grips with the Utah pipeline of coaches and the lack of results. I like the idea of McGiven and Baldwin swapping roles, but then it is all another knee-jerk response to compound his already suspect track record of knee-jerk responses.

If Nall is in the doghouse for the goal-line penalty, then he is in the doghouse for showing some fight and that explains why the team had no fight in the second half. It is unbelievable for Nall to be getting only 10-12 carries per game.

Sitake’s departure has been a forgotten aspect, which affected recruiting for the second year, and has hit hard on the defensive side with the teams energy and willingness to be aggressive. Sitake was much more of a risk/reward approach. Now we get no pressure and don’t blitz.

Special teams is a disgrace as well. the fair catch was mentioned already, but how can the punter be regressing so rapidly? When will there be an attempt to block a punt? Where is the aggressiveness that was promised?

When a team has a talent gap, and needs to be creative to stay in games, that is when a risk needs to be taken, trick plays, fake punt, all out pressure, etc. I think about Boise St, TCU, Virginia Tech…each team was known for trick plays, special treams forcing turnovers, defensive points, attacking and capitalizing. Right now we are seeing a lack of imagination for how to respond or prepare for those moments in games.

I thought GA was the answer and I am no longer sure. If Nall is in the doghouse, and McM was run out, it makes no sense to alienate the 2 guys most responsible for last year’s Civil War victory. GA may be too stubborn for his own good, or he may have lost the team in the spring when Luton came to town and he is being heavy handed left an right to restore order, which will fail to accomplish what he hopes. Guys will outwardly show up and go through the motions to stay out of the fray, but will have checked out internally and mentally, some will just come out and challenge the authority and get singled out, like Riley’s players were early on. It is a poor way of managing men, if indeed that is what is happening. Soon guys say “No, I’m going to play for me, and I’m getting mine.”
From Remember the Titans: “Attitude reflects leadership, Captain.”

    • “GA may be too stubborn for his own good…”…and, that’s why I doubt he’ll fire McGiven.

Impulsive decisions, combined with a stubborn reluctance to admit mistakes=a bad combination.

  49. Anyone remember the circumstance of Baldwins ‘reassignment’? Specifically, was it during or after the first season when they had so little skilled manpower?

    • I posted this above but even with Baldwin’s demotion he is still being paid more than McGiven. Why would an inside receivers coach ever make more than your OC?

      • Because Baldwin is a stable voice who can recruit. He has numerous connections that would be lost if he left.

I agree. I think he was demoted due to too little talent being on the field that year, not because his system was a failure. Any system would have been a disaster that year. But it wasn’t borne of impulse because of the timing of it all. I wonder if Baldwin was the one who gifted SC the QB job, not McGiven or GA. And I wonder if he then moved to where SC moved because of that.

What is clear is that McGiven is calling games contrary to what GA wants. He’s been given enough rope to hang himself for three games. GA needs to yank the rope away and give it to someone else.

          • He actually spelled it out clear as day and stuck with it until this year, the whole brain/arm/legs thing. Didn’t have much personnel to run it but at least stuck with it with who he had.

Until Luton showed up. Then the entire scheme went to shit so they could max protect him and try to pass all over the place. It’s time to scrap it and go back to the game plan from last year and if the the QB gets hurt running then next man up.

          • Anybody an expert in the run and shoot? Doesn’t it operate mostly out of the pistol, with a lot of run game and quick hitters? Just seems like a valid option since there’s already an expert on staff.

      • Baldwin doesn’t make more than McGiven, they renegotiated the contract. He makes $250k after the demotion. McGiven and Woods both still make $375k. Phillips is at $220k.

  50. A couple of observations:

    1. During camp I remember a few players saying “everything GA tells us comes true”
    2. The team seemed very confident / almost cocky regarding expectations for the season

Because of this I believe the team was probably confused but bought into the changes by this coaching staff. Now that they have seen “everything GA tells us” does not come true the team has lost faith in the staff. What was working at the end of last year was completely abandoned.

  51. Two quick things: The big “win” over PSU will be further diminished when they finish 4-7 in the Big Sky. I told you all in May when Tyner arrived that he would be done by October 1, missed it by three weeks.

    • Tyner was listed as having a hamstring injury, not sure if that is legit or just for the staff to have a reason for him not playing. Am I off base to think that maybe some of the team chemistry issues are coming from having a team with four Power 5 starting quality running backs and not enough carries because of whatever the fuck this new offense is?

  52. So this website has a list of coaches on the hot seat for all 130 teams in FBS. Anderson is ranked 3 out of 0-5. His seat is warming up. Rich rod and Todd graham are both at a 4. So who on the list would we hire from this list as far as a head coach is concerned? I wouldn’t mind getting Brian kelly to be honest as long as he brings in a different OC.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/2017-college-football-hot-seat-rankings-evaluating-job-security-of-all-130-coaches/amp/

  53. When they named Luton the starter and MM transferred, that was the beginning of the end for this season…from unconfirmed reports, some players were very divided on the Luton-McMaryion situation and how that was handled. They put a lot of pressure on Luton to replace on of the most popular beaver players….the only QB to beat the schmucks since 2007. Granted that MM didn’t have the big arm but he more than made up for that with his intelligence and ability to beat you with his legs. If MM had been named the starter and was unable to succeed, they could have made change to Luton and MM would still be a beaver and an option. I still believe MM deserved and earned right to be the starting QB and now we have a mess on our hands and could be looking at 1-11 season….so far, Luton hasn’t even come close to what MM did last season in his six starts….GA and his staff ought to be on the hot seat even though the extension to 2021….that’s on Barnes and he’s complicit too.

    • mcmaryion was the most popular player now? The legend of mcmaryion is growing!! Fact is nobody on the team cared much that he left. He’s not on the team anymore, let it go.

      • Dude had 36 yards passing and 15 rushing against Alabama’s vaunted defense, bro! We’d be talking New Years 6 if we had his management.

JK, I think there’s something to what Angry has been carrying on about, but it’s a symptom of much larger issues, IMO.

        • He ran away after having started camp. He wasn’t forced out. He had a solid place on this team and could have been a leader if he so chose that role.

So if he had Gundy talent AND presence, then why run away?

Only family is a valid reason. All else is him running away from his reality.

      • As I posted above, he was one of the most popular players and players respected him for his work habits and his intelligence. I didn’t post that he was the most popular player. Regardless, he was really the only PROVEN experienced QB they had and GA and his staff opted for a virtually inexperienced JC QB that had proven absolutely nothing outside of scrimmages and practice.

    • Why not Rich Rod?

If anyone is interested in coaches who can lead the run and shoot, June Jones is in the CFL right now. I think John Jenkins is up there too, but I don’t think he’s coaching.

      • Ha, I brought up the run and shoot earlier today up ^ way somewhere. I think it might be worth a look, although I’m admittedly not any kind of expert on it.

Jason Phillips was co-OC and WR coach at SMU and Houston, so he has experience and success.

  54. Jack is defensive of all Andersen’s decisions, thinks Luton is better than McMaryion for no reason, thinks Nall stinks, and now he’s stooped to an all time low in blaming the refs for a 35 point loss. This guy has lost his mind.

    • I didn’t blame the refs for the loss. I simply stated they jobbed us on about a half dozen plays that were game-changing in their nature. I also provided examples that were solid in their presentation. If you would like to counter that, do it. Put up or shut up.

Luton is better than MM in physical tools. That’s just reality. He’s not as versed in the playbook, if there even is one. He has much more upside, including the ability to make throws that are basic in this sport. MM didn’t have that ability. But as has been pointed out, taking ability away from McGiven might be a good thing.

I will support GA if he demotes McGiven. I don’t see (or hear) anything that is different from what GA clearly states. I see a lot of reading between the lines where there are only simple, single lines. I don’t get that. But some of you need to confirm some of your weird biases.

Clearly he has failed to lead this team properly. But he hasn’t failed to build it properly. From a personnel standpoint, we’re light years ahead of Riley’s teams. That does lead to a greater disappointment with the start of this season. But it’s also a long season. If you’ll recall, Riley’s best year started about as poorly as this one has begun.

Do you have any other straw men rattling around in your head? I’ll be happy to correct them.

      • Riley’s good teams had quarterbacks that would later be on NFL rosters. Don’t see any on this team. Correct me if I’m wrong. Riley’s best year 2006? We started 2-1 with loss to Fiesta Bowl Champ on Road. Be more accurate to compare Andersen’s starts to Pettibone’s teams at this point or maybe Fertig, Avezzano or Kraigthorpe. Comparing a coach, who after this year is likely to average 2.3 wins a year, to a coach that averaged almost 7 is disrespectful. Once Andersen beats a team that has a winning record or even a crappy team on the road he may get my attention.

        • Thank you Jerrod for recognizing my coaching awesomeness and rightful place as on OSU great. As I watched the clock tick down last night I was reminded of the final minutes of my games. A steady rain pelting down on an empty stadium as the few tail lights vanished into the gloom.

Main difference was that the rain was pelting down on fancy new aluminum benches instead of the old splintered wood that was there during my tenure. Ah… sweet memories of Parker!

        • In 2006 we were 2-3, and the 3 were major beat downs (two by score, one by Wazzu). If it wasn’t for a bunch of fifth-year seniors wanting to do the same to DE, that Riley team would have probably lost to Idaho too. They had the personnel, but they had zero heart.

Comparing GA to a coach who by this time in his OSU career was a coach somewhere else is poor form. When you make that list, be sure to make the full list. Fertig, Avezzano, Kragthorpe, Pettibone… and the one who manipulated OSU for personal gain instead of becoming like the rest.

I’m not even close to being disrespectful.

But I am accurate in pointing to that moment when all the “Fire Mike Riley” signs were flying. That team was a talented bunch without a rudder. What’s worse is that Riley took over a winning program and drove it down to that level… with one of those NFL QBs leading the way.

So maybe I am a little unfair or disrespectful… to GA… who didn’t get that luxury.

  55. For some reason that GA pressed has haunted me today. Is it just me, or was that one of the absolute worst ways to handle that situation. Is that how he addressed the team? They still have 8 games left! What kind of example is he setting for his players and assistants?

IMO, he should have expressed his disgust at the performance, communicate that the team is going to keep what works and change what doesn’t, and make sure they know that in much more serious life situations, quitting isn’t an option, so no matter how bad things have gotten you still need to put on your big boy pants and try to fix things. Talk about how you’re still building something here, even despite the setbacks. Even after the whippinng we took, I could have respected that.

Instead, the leader of the team looked like a defeated man with no plan who’s no longer excited about this rebuilding process he had owned for the last 3 years.

  56. What an absolute disgrace our football program has become. The culture of winning is just not present in Corvallis. It makes me sick that the opposing teams fans are always louder than our own. There is no energy on our sideline at all. Meanwhile Fleck and friends are dancing and running up and down the sideline after every play that went their way. I’ve sat through this low energy bullshit in section 14 since I was a child.

I’ve always envied other programs who bring a coach in and change the entire culture surrounding a football program. Granted, winning breeds a rabid fan base but the lack of passion in the stands for our Beavers is killing me. I’ve been to several Pac-12 stadiums and regardless of the teams record, their fans are loud and passionate. My family and I were told multiple times to sit down during the Portland State game by fellow fans as well as the event staff! For standing and cheering on our team!

I will never buy into the narrative that our program is a hard place to coach. I’ve been to Pullman…Leach is doing perfectly fine recruiting and winning there.

The Andersen era has done nothing but show me that he is a terrible manager of his coaches and especially his personnel. I know he’s not an offensive minded coach but he has to realize that the play calling is trash.

With all this it becomes extremely hard to blame the players for the downturn. If your coaches and fans show no positive energy and emotion for you then it becomes easy to go through the motions and get your ass beat week in and week out.

Unless we hire a coach to revive us I see our program going downhill even faster. With the rising costs of attending games, late/early start times, abysmal on the field product, other basement dwelling Pac-12 programs improving, I don’t think it’s out of the question to consider our football program move to a G5 conference.

  57. Is it just me or does it seem like we have a lot of fake monikers with BS commentary (i.e., zbeav, Timberrr, Franklin Villaneuva, Wavering Fan, LA Pine, Jim, and Bloody Beaver….really?!?!). Angry, any way we can block some of these guys?….they add nothing to the conversation but distraction to all that is serious regarding these troubled Beaver times. Some of these guys are funny, but its getting old….def some fake shit going on. My 2 cents.
P.S. — not that everything I write is worthwhile, but come on!!!

    • Ironic that they would choose to come be critical of the Beavers on a site that’s dedicated the past 10 years to being critical of the Beavers

    • What’s your problem with me, buddy? I just call them like I see them. May be right, may be wrong.
Probably some of both. I don’t hang out all year, usually around the season.

You probably have the stupidest name on here. I certainly wouldn’t be throwing potshots about that.

      • Thanks! Will take as compliment. For such a great circus that this site is, didn’t realize there were multiple Bozo-the-clowns waiting for the right moment to act their shtick. Perhaps you are real, perhaps you’re not. Whatever….

  58. I’m done. I was not going to renew my season tickets after last season but after the last 2 games I bought into the fools gold. This year will be my last buying season tickets. Why make a commitment to be miserable when you can watch this shit show on your own TV. I am sure many other people will come to the same conclusion and we will see 20K attendance for years to come. No need to redo the west side when the stadium is only half full. The avalanche has started and it won’t stop anytime soon. #mtwest?

  59. Clune is not the problem. We have seen a steady progression of the defense week by week. Now, we may not that this week with Washington State, because the level of competition increases dramatically, but I think by the time we get through the next 5 games, the defense will be much better. These next five games will be brutal.

The biggest problem lies with McGiven. There is absolutely no reason why, when we have 4 capable running backs, the defense should be on the field for nearly 2/3rds of the game. Granted, I think he can develop a quarterback as a position coach, but only as a position coach.

I think the right course of action will be to demote McGiven and promote Baldwin. Baldwin struggled in 2015 because there was so much turnover with the roster due to injuries. Unlike McGiven, Baldwin has experience working as an offensive coordinator at a power-5 school (Michigan State and Baylor), which is, at this point, the best we’ve got. I am hoping that if he takes over the offense, we will stop seeing all shotgun snaps. I would like to see some I-form with Johnson and Nall in the back field, some three back pistol sets, and two back pro sets.

I think we can still get to 5 wins, but those last 4 wins will come at the end of the season and depends on who is the offensive coordinator going forward. ASU does not look very good. Cal will certainly be a challenge, but they looked beatable against Weber State. Arizona’s offense stalled against Houston. Hole cannot chew clock after getting big leads.

OSU will get beat bad the next five games. Positive thing is that there will be a lot of learning experiences from getting trashed. Question is, will the team give up after this stretch?

    • “…There is absolutely no reason why, when we have 4 capable running backs, the defense should be on the field for nearly 2/3rds of the game….”

I’d say there is a reason and that is the OL is not capable of providing the blocking necessary to have a consistent running game.

  60. McGiven is the definition of the Peter Principle and GA isn’t yet able to see it and do something about it. He didn’t develop STG much as the qb coach either.

JockItch, let the new guys comment without jabbing them. Angrybeavs is much better than the tripe on Olive and all of those fake posters. Don’t close the Angrybeavs forum to guys who are just voicing agreement and also concerned about Beaver football.

      • Thanks Scotty…that’s all I’m saying. I enjoy the criticism and remarks which are necessary, just not the Trolls. Some of the Trolls are not as obvious as others. I can’t tell if they are one of us playing devil’s advocate under a different moniker, or if they be asshole acting like beaver. It is a very thin line that separates the two.

  61. Still recovering from a horrendous case of Blue Balls from Andersen having Garretson warm up when it still could have mattered and then not playing him for even one snap as Luton and the team snowballed further behind. This after finding some success and a better overall rythym with Garretson getting some series last week and stating to media both would continue to receive playing time and be relied upon.

GA’s reasoning in his post Minny presser didn’t pass mustard. Another GA instance of poor coaching and leadership. Would have been valuable for Garretson for Pac-12 play. Never got the sense GA cares enough about wins and losses. Cares more about being stubborn for no good reason and against reason.

    • Either GA didn’t understand that Garretson question or he dodged it in a major way.

For those of you who didn’t see it, he was asked if he thought about pulling Luton in favor of DG, and answered that DG is a veteran, so he didn’t need mop up time minutes. It may have never even occurred to him to pull Luton while we were still in striking distance.

      • GA is on auto pilot. He’s so lost and confused that he’s realizing his coaching career is tanking and is also realizing there’s no way to recover from this debacle. This is GA’s own doing by trying to do the band aid method on a compound fracture rather than putting a tourniquet on the self inflicted wounds. We expected a turnaround similar to Riley’s first tenure at Oregon State. He turned the program around in 2-3 seasons to when DE took over, we were able to go to a bowl game in 1999(lost to Hawaii, but still went to a bowl game) then the next season DE went Juco heavy route and got guys who wanted to prove themselves, but it was mostly WR, DL/DE, and LB that he went JUCO for rather than QB and CB, and OL.

DE did one thing right, he accepted the players that he inherited from Riley. He didn’t try to push them to the side or push them out of the program because if you can earn the trust of the players you currently have, then that will just propel you to succeed in the future. GA did not and has not done this thus far and it’s too late to try to do this because he’s lost control of this team as a whole. They don’t buy in anymore, they can see GA is trying to get “his guys” on the field as quickly as possible. Depth doesn’t help when the 2 deep has the players you’re trying to push out.

  62. Was just listening to a podcast where it was mentioned that New England Patriot mascot Pat Patriot used to wear jersey number “0” for years, until a fan approached Robert Kraft and asked him to change it to “1”(apparently video of this interaction exists but I didnt look it up)
Anyway Kraft took the advice. Before the jersey change, the Pats stunk and after, they became the most consistently successful team over the past couple decades.

Then it occured to me……Benny is normally seen wearing “0” or “00”

I think we’ve found our problem.

    • That would be funny if it worked.

It reminds me of Ed Ray’s story of driving down the road and seeing an OSU billboard showing the website URL, www.orst.com, and deciding to change it.

    • Nike’s most recent troll on OSU. Sports bras…..duck head in the beaver logo….and now team division(although 11th place would be generous at this point)

  63. Due to a demanding work schedule lately, Whiskey did not see any of the first two beavs games. Listened on the radio and it didn’t sound pretty. Saturday night was the first time I got to watch the Beavs play in 2017. I turned the game off in the 3rd quarter but decided I would hold off on posting for 24 hours to digest the shit show I watched on TV………………

After listening to the first two games on the radio I deduced this much. The offense is a turnover waiting to happen. The defense is a sieve that can’t seem to stop the run or the pass. The O line doesn’t seem to be able to run block or pass block. You are all correct. This team sucks. Luton is not the answer at QB. At this point I am all for handing the reins back to Garretson. What other options are there?

For a coaching staff that seems to pride itself on strength and conditioning, why do these guys seem to get pushed around in the trenches so damn much?

I am laughing my ass off at all of you calling for Baldwin to take over OC and play calling again. Many of you bitched exactly the same when he WAS OC and calling the plays. Much like the backup QB, he’s the most popular when things aren’t going well.

GA has stated he doesn’t stick his nose in the offensive side of things since he’s a defensive guy. Doesn’t look like he’s sticking his nose in the defensive side of things either.

Think it’s time to scrap the 3-4 idea on defense. It isn’t working. Zero push from the D-line.

I read about the Beavs getting a few silent commits. The reason they’re silent is because they are waiting for a better offer.

Why in the fuck do you field a punt inside the 5 yard line? What has happened to situational awareness?

I don’t care if you have Eric Dickerson and Barry Sanders in the backfield. If your O-line can’t run block worth a shit, they aren’t going far.

You could also have John Elway or Dan Marino and he isn’t going to be successful if your O-line can’t pass block either.

Defense might suck but they are also on the field waaaaaaaaaay too damn long.

I’ve defended GA and this coaching staff. But they’re starting to lose me. I expected to keep the upward trajectory. Not seeing it. 3 more games. If it’s the same shit show? Done for the year.

All of you calling for GA’s head? Good luck with that. Unless you plan on cutting the check for his buyout this coaching staff isn’t going anywhere for a few years.

Next 5 games look fucking bleak. 1-7 is a very real possibility.

WSU, Washington, USC, Colorado and Stanford. Ya’ll see any wins in there no matter where the game is played? I fucking don’t.

    More horseshit ramblings later………………..

    • If he is truly as deflated and burnt out as he seems recently, I hope he has the integrity to retire or quit. I still hold out hope that he is who we thought he was, and can turn it around. I think this is actually a rebuilding year. Aren’t 3 OL from last year around the NFL now? If so, makes sense why they’re having trouble. They don’t just restock like Stanford.

    • There’s a difference when Baldwin was OC. The complaints at that time were about having a QB who constantly called his own number. Now it’s about an OC who calls games contrary to what the head coach has stated he wants to see.

Let’s see what happens tomorrow. It could get interesting.

      • To be honest, I’ve blocked out most of my memories of Baldwin as OC. Having very little talent distorts playcalling expectations.

I do remember a lot of comments about how all of his Diet Coke must be rotting his brain, so it couldn’t have been that great.

So sad watching that and feeling how I want that team back. That first year team had no depth and little talent but played their asses off for GA towards the end of the year. Thought that civil war was called well offensively as well, and improved as the game went on, something we haven’t seen since last years civil war (run the football ffs).

          • For some reason, I thought that Civil War was called by McGiven and led to the whole OC switch up. It was like GA saw one decent game of offense all year and made a knee jerk reaction to change OC, but didn’t also consider there was a new QB starting for us in that game too.

    • I’ll watch the first quarter/first half, but then it’s time to go do other things after that because this team comes out flat after half time. Last year we were a second half team, this year we’re not really a first half team unless our offense is productive. Then once the second half hits, they don’t make adjustments, they make mistakes. It’s almost like the players want to appear to be doing well in the first half, but then they realize, hey, we should completely implode in the second half in hopes that we can get new coaches!

  64. I’m not sold on Baldwin as OC either, wasn’t he the one who called the screen pass against Weber St. that didn’t do McM any favors? Although I do have a friend who played for Baldwin at San Jose St. and he swears by him as a coach and motivator. At least Baldwin has some legit Power 5 experience and is not just a mid major fuck around like many of DA’s buddies.

As I look back on this thing with GA, it has a weird trajectory, he was a mid-major flavor of the week who landed in a big legacy program (which most coaches like him would kill for) and then apparently voluntarily decided to take what I would call a half-step down and it looks like it’s going to end his career. With his contract, I would think he still has the rest of this season and next to do something. I fear that OSU is on the cusp of becoming the next Kansas.

    • Yeah, I was trying to think of an analogous team. My thought was Iowa State. I was/am hoping Andersen could be OSU’s Bill Snyder, and become the Kansas State of the Pac 12. I was voted down for expressing that wish when Andersen was hired, but I think a lot more people would be receptive to the notion now.

  65. Yes the current state of the program is VERY questionable, but I am seeing some parallels between what’s happening and OSU and what happened at CU with MacIntyre…..bare cupboards, new AD, down/up/down trend.

The main difference is that MacIntyre had a legit QB and didn’t fuck around trying to get the right person into the role. But I wouldn’t call the Andersen experiment a total loss until halfway through year 4.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if we are quietly testing the waters for a new coach. Financially it’s not realistic at this point, but putting feelers out doesn’t cost anything.

If the beavs were to cut Andersen loose, we would have no choice but to go with a proven coordinator as a HC, as we’d have no money left after buying out his contract. Ideal scene for me would look like:

    Jonathan Smith — HC
    Mark Helfrich — OC
    DC — no idea

  66. I don’t have warm feeling about Baldwin being OC, one being I think it was he, and not Andersen, who drove out the existing QB’s, one of which went on to be a starter at Florida. To make matters worse he made “his guy” the starter and this kid was neither ready nor capable of being the QB at this level.

Then there’s the 18 cans of diet coke per day and the ensuing apparent brain rot which resulted from treating his body that way…… :-)

So my 2 cents is a big thumbs down.

In an earlier post someone mentioned Woods as OC…. I don’t have a clue as to how well he’d do but at this point I’m thinking why not give him a try it couldn’t be much worse than what we have now.

  67. McMaryion had 4 Ivy League offers in Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Penn. Dude probably mastered the Fresno play book in a day. He’ll likely start this week. Sadly I think many here will be rooting against him.

      • Well if you don’t care that your HC runs players out of town, then as a fan you got what you deserved. The main reason I care is GA should be destroyed over that decision, and so far the media hasn’t said a word. If McM lights it up at Fresno people will talk and bring GA’s obvious flaws into the open. So, you should care. Plus there is nothing to watch with our team, so if I do watch any football I’ll be watching the ancillary stories in Oregon, Nebraska, and Fresno — much more interesting than our story.

  68. TO: Football Staff

FROM: Acting Head Coach Andersen (just kidding)

I’m calling an audible here. All GA’s and volunteer assistants are required to spend the night in the office. Don’t give a damn what you do but keep the lights on and move around a little. We’ve got to make it look like we’re at least trying.

It’s important that we keep at least 5-6 cars in the parking lot. You guys work that out, way too complicated for me.

As for you assistant coaches. Maintain a low profile. No restaurants, no Starbucks, no movies and most importantly NO BARS!! Even if Yeske calls.

I’ll be home binge watching House of Cards. You can reach me at the usual number but remember the 9:00 cut-off. Late calls scare the dogs.

There is plenty of Top-Ramen and Gatorade on the lounge area. Don’t forget I have dibs on the blue ones.

See you all Tuesday.. whenever we practice. GA

PS: Go Aggies.. I mean Badgers… err Beavs. Get’s confusing.

  69. With GA taking a backseat approach, I’m wondering if he’s evaluating all of his coaches’ ability to prepare and game plan without him. I bet the last 2 years, he’s felt he had to step in and micro manage more than he should. Now he’s letting his guys he hired to do their jobs and obviously that isn’t working. So I feel GA will clean house at the end of the season and I bet that’s what weighed on his mind at the Presser more than anything. He has to figure out which, if any, coaches he’ll keep on his staff for next year. I would say Woods and maybe Baldwin are the only ones that stay, everyone else, needs to go. He has 4 more seasons to try to right the ship before his contract expires. Why not rebuild within a rebuild? Riley fired Banker and Bruce Reed; why can’t we have a mass firing of the staff and abandon ship while GA goes down with the ship?

    • Chad K. was offered the DC job when it opened up and flat out told GA he wasn’t ready for it yet. So GA tried to give that job to a guy who felt he wasn’t ready and had to decline it. Little known fact.

      • So not only does GA not know how to evaluate player talent, he doesn’t even know how to evaluate coaching talent and when a coach is ready for an OC/DC position….No wonder our team is in shambles.

        In the M*A*S*H TV Show:

Frank: (to Henry) You have no idea how it disgusts me to find myself here.
Hawkeye: We share your disgust, Frank.
Frank: That farmer and his family are making a shambles out of the compound.
Sam Pak: How can you make a shambles out of a shambles?
Frank: These people are your people. They ought to get down on the ground and kiss their lucky stars above that we are here, spilling our blood to keep them safe from democracy!

The below is my version of the Oregon State football team:

Fans: (to GA) You have no idea how it disgusts me to find myself here.
Players: We share your disgust, Fans.
Fans: That coach and his staff are making a shambles out of the program.
Everyone: How can you make a shambles out of a shambles?
Fans: These people are your people. They ought to get down on the ground and kiss their lucky stars above that we are here, spilling our money to keep their jobs secure from the harsh world!

  70. History does not repeat itself, and it’s not truly predictive, but it does rhyme. So, to address the “is Anderson on the hot seat?” question, I’d said the answer subjectively is obviously yes, he’s said as much.

But that begs two questions: the obvious rejoinder to the “it’s on me” that is his favorite interpretive trope is “what are you going to do about it?” We’ll wait forever for the Oregon media to ask that question.

Question 2: how bad does it have to get before OSU does something about the situation. To answer that I went to the record books and here’s the pattern:

Dee Andros (last three years only)
    2-9
    3-8
    1-10 (fired)

    Fertig
    2-10
    2-9
    3-7-1
    1-10 (fired) [see the trend?]

    Avezanno

    0-11
    1-10
    1-9-1
    2-8-1
    2-9 fired

    Kragthorpe

    3-8
    3-8
    2-9
    4-6-1
    4-7-1
1-10 fired [the dreaded 1 win season]

    Pettibone
    1-10
    1-9-1
    4-7
    1-10 (’95; somehow survived)
    2-9 fired

    Riley I

    3-8
    5-6 (left, first time)

Here’s my takeaway: (1) Only Pettibone survived a one-win season several years into his tenure, and then only 1 year. (2) it’s the serious regression after an uptick that got those guys fired.
    (3) if OSU goes 1-11 this year Anderson may not survive, and if he does the Pettibone model suggests he has to get close to a winning season in his 4th year to survive.

  71. From one year ago, post entitled “I Figured out Gary Andersen”

    http://angrybeavs.com/football/12451

Boy does that ring even truer today.
I was looking for the one where I wrote the only way I saw him failing was not getting a QB. Can’t find it, but I know I wrote it.

Found it. It was in the comments of that post:
If he does fail it will be because he can’t find a QB. Willard looks like a dud (very low completion % — this has to stop).

          • those 3 coaches had success more than just 1 year in their conference. Also, they didn’t bring all of their MWC coaches with them. They formulated from around the country with a few of “their guys”. Look at Nebraska and how Riley’s “guys” had to be let go in order to be successful. Sometimes having “a good thing” at one school doesn’t mean it will be “a good thing” at the new university.

          • Everyone was alarmed/concerned at how many Utah guys GA brought, and we joked he’d hire some guy from Utah State to fill the DC job. Sure enough…

So that part is correct, but you said thinking MWC coaches doing well in the PAC is somehow flawed, and it’s not. I don’t know enough about the Boise/Utah staffs under those coaches to say much about it, but the HCs sure could coach in any Conference.

          • Jim Mcelwain going from CSU to Florida has managed to still finish 1st in the SEC East the last 2 years, although that is the weaker half of the SEC. But still, he did it wil Luke Del Rio at QB some of the time

          • Chris P., Urban M., and Kyle W. all have some inkling on how to manage a football staff and are solid on game prep. These coaches also had a track record of playing tough opponents and playing them tough year in and year out. This does not qualify with GA(see blow out in B1G Championship game before we hired him). I give him the rest of 2017 to make “the tough call” meaning fire people, or I’m convinced we’re back to the days of 0-4 wins each season no matter who our coach is because no one will be willing to come coach at Corvallis because we’re cursed in some way shape or form.

          • How about this metric: first season at Utah Meyer won 5 more games (12-0) than the previous coach. Whittingham took over and was -5, but lost Alex smith and started a soph. Peterson won 4 more games his first season in Boise than the previous coach. In fact, today’s top teams are generally coached by coaches (that I’ve looked at so far) who didn’t need a rebuilding period, unless they had to start an underclassman at qb.

  72. Anybody know when the press Q&A happens? Seems like it’s never advertised but then suddenly we start seeing quotes tweeted out as it happens live.

  73. Another player makes a comment about the team’s preparedness in the 2nd half. Yet again GA didn’t like it but this time he did a better job of biting his tongue and deflecting the question.

Tough spot to be in. Hopefully he chews his coach’s asses behind closed doors.
