Good luck to Cory Hall. He inherits the easier part of the schedule, so maybe we’ll have some better results.

Emotion is going to play into this game one way or another. I think the Beavs take out some aggression on CO. Just not sure these lame-duck coordinators put in max effort, or that Hall is organized enough on short notice to formulate a winning game plan. Since the coordinators’ careers are on the line, and since Hall hinted at running the ball and tightening up the offense, I’ll go out on a limb and take the positive side.

26-20, Beavs

  1. Angry, I thought you might be interested in Brent Brennan’s comments about Marcus McMaryion prior to the Fresno State game. @ 22:40 ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YYJls3L-j0

Here’s my transcript of what he said:

“,,, Knowing that kid I’m not surprised that he’s making plays and doing a good job for them.

He’s an incredibly diligent kid, he’s a good leader, he’s a good passer, he’s got the ability to extend plays, he can run. But he’s an accurate passer first. He’s an awsome kid. He decided to transfer because he wanted to play and he thought this was the best opportunity for him…”.

Q: What are his strengths & what makes him a better QB than say Virgil?

A: In my experience with Marcus, he’s a very accurate passer. He’s really great in the huddle, he’s really calm, he doesn’t panic, he doesn’t freak out, he played in lots of big games for us at Oregon State and you know we beat Oregon last year at the end of the season with him under center. I know we’re going to face an accurate passer, who’s very calm, cool and collected and he’s going to be ready to go.

Jack – Did you happen to pick up on the comment about McMaryion wanting to play so (instead of sitting on the bench for the rest of his eligibility) that’s why he transferred?

    • I think my biggest frustration with the Gary Andersen Fiasco of 2017 is that I now have 4 separate, disjoint pictures in my head that I can’t reconcile. And, every time I hear someone talk about it, it further reinforces one of the images without coalescing any of them

      • Their opinions?

They’re saying he did what was best for him. What was best for him was not being a good teammate at OSU. What was best for him was to pretend to commit to the team by showing up at camp then leaving the program (at which he’s supposedly a leader) without any contingencies for his loss like they would have had he been mature about it and just left in the spring.

Those aren’t my opinions. Those are just realities. More power to him, but he proved Kevin McGiven (of all people) right when he transferred. He immediately showed he was not committed at all to this team, and you can’t play anyone who is not committed 100%, let alone not at all.

Instead of dwelling at the the bottom of this rabbit hole you all have dug, why don’t we talk about how spending time digging it is why we missed the GA thingy?

There were obvious signs that were ignored because we were constantly dealing in this dumb conspiracy. There was a major disconnect between what the head coach was saying and what we were seeing on the field. I didn’t know about him at the time, but I sure as hell know now that he took that as a personal affront. He didn’t make clear it was an affront through actions, until now. He just internalized everything and made himself unwell. That could explain the poor judgment with the texting and even the coaching choices he made which led him here. That’s a him thing now, and I hope he gets any help he needs.

But we missed all this because we were wandering some conspiracy wilderness that, if true, was a tiny symptom of the bigger, real problem.

        • No matter how many times you pontificate in your bellicose way, you are incorrect regarding McM and will remain so. Angry should send you to the penalty box for insisting McM did anything except go find playing time (which is what any talented athlete does if he can).

          • That is precisely what he did.

That changes none of the facts. Why he left doesn’t make him committed to this team. He still left.

What is it with you guys? It’s like you don’t understand that he transferred and is gone. You can’t justify it without admitting it happened.

Question: Is MM committed to this team?

          • If you can’t honestly answer that question, then I don’t know what to tell you, other than your dishonesty is giving you tunnel vision and has done so for two months now.

          • Haha. He’ll never admit he’s wrong.

Jack needs to study logic. Or just admit when he’s wrong before it gets to laughable levels.

Hell, I was wrong about GA. Just admit it, man. Be a team player, instead of a chickenshit, and admit it!

          • No.

I think a person who transfers because of entitlement issues is a pussy or a chickenshit or a wimp who has a closet full of participation trophies.

You say MM transferred because of entitlement issues. I want to know if you think MM is committed to this team. You won’t answer because he’s obviously not, and it follows that there is zero chance that a coach who chose not to play someone who is not committed to his team made a poor decision.

It’s your narrative, and you can’t own it.

That makes a poor conspiracy narrative much weaker. Why can’t you just back what you write?

      • My guess is if a WR coach lobbied for a QB and thus challenging the OC/QB coach’s decision there’s a good chance there’d be disharmony amongst the coaching staff and let’s face it BB was the outsider.

  2. I’m with ID Beav in thinking something like 38 -14. I’m most interested in seeing more cohesive leadership. Less delegation. I don’t know how I would measure that but maybe some of you guys are astute enough to recognize it.

  3. For what its worth Coach Hall coached a high school team in California. I think he will have this team playing fun and free. That could be bad or good. Not sure. I would like to keep Coach Hall on the new staff after the season is over. Go Beavs!

  4. If Oregon State takes their time and a AZ school opens up who may pursue Beau that will just drive his deal up. Beavs are better interviewing him over next 2-3 weeks to confirm he’s a top target. Barnes has to be having some conversations now and can’t wait til the end of the season. Becomes a tough choice if an AZ school is also pursuing. Have the bird in the hand and not in the bush. He gets to be what he wants ( a Pac-12 HC) as soon as we offer. Plays better for us if that is accepted before December when other schools could join the mix.

  5. I’m asking this question again since I put it on the expired thread by mistake.

With OSU being a public institution are they required to share why GA was allowed out of his contract without paying OSU the $2 mm buyout he should have owed and why he is being paid through the remainder of the year? The noble GA story of letting us out of the $12 mm buyout is not accurate when he chose to resign and we accepted his resignation but did him a favor by calling it mutual. That $2 mm he should have paid could have gone towards paying off the assistants who are on guarantees through 2018. Scott Barnes appears to have willingly given OSU the shaft on this deal without any explanation.

    • The reports appear to be inflated as well. Read also he is being paid through end of season and it didn’t stop right when he quit. Read a 883K number of what he would (and looks like will) make for the rest of the year. Not sure if this was an evening of press conference backtrack by the AD of completely resolving all future money on the contract or what.

Reason is because for the last 4 years the number was exactly 11.6 million.

      2.75 mil + 2.85 + 2.95 + (cough) 3.05 mil = 11.6

Add .883 mil, which it now seems he is getting, and it would have been 12.483 but appears isn’t.

11.6 isn’t as good as the 12.6 being reported by media.

Still enough to get Beau but you want as much as you can for good coordinators to be hired along with the HC.

      • Beau Baldwin, after a couple of years at Cal, is either going to bomb out or excel. In the first case, OSU isn’t interested; if the second he’s not going to be interested in OSU, at all. In any event, I doubt he’s going to break his contract at Cal after only a year.

        • Cal is going bowling this year in his first after being predicted to finish dead last in conference by analysts. No way will he stay at Cal as an OC if he can become a Pac-12 Head Coach and triple his salary. He said this week he wants to be a HC again.

          • Of course he wants to be a HC. But he’s not going to triple his salary anywhere if it’s Wilcox and DeRuyter winning all the games. His O is situational, but it’s not doing the work on that team.

  6. “Anyone know where I could score a free ticket to the game today? I misplaced my wallet with $12,000,000.00 in it. I would prefer a low row behind the Beaver bench. I could offer the coaches a few suggestions during the game, kind of like when I was head coach. Old habits die hard. GA”

  7. I think this game is a toss up. I suspect OSU runs the ball better, and it is more competitive than most games. But if Colorado’s coaching staff prepares their team for an emotionally high Beaver team, I could see them pulling out the victory, with OSU’s passing game limitations being the difference.

  8. Baldwin’s offense for Cal last night was awesome vs. WSU….He’s #1 on my list as the next OSU HC….I hope we can get this guy as he’ll bring an exciting style of offense and solid QB play to OSU….

  9. Jim Wilson brought up a point on radio which I don’t think has been mentioned here. He’d like to see more substitutions on O besides at WR and RB. Point is that 7 guys are playing every offensive down and could be motivated by stepping aside when they aren’t being effective. Also, the second stringers would stay more engaged.

BUT, does the team have the depth to follow his advice?

BTW: Wilson was firm in his statement that GA left things better than did MR.

Go Beavs!…………..I’ll go out on angry’s limb…..27-21 good guys……based on Hall’s remark about more running plays and the hope that emotion is channeled.

  10. I’d like to see a nice dosage of pierce and tyner since they have trouble with faster quicker backs. Wouldn’t mind seeing darrel run either. If he gets hurt we can see how the other guys that will be back next year look.

  11. Everyone (coaches, players) seems relaxed and relieved GA is gone…at least pre-game. Interesting quote from McGiven “steady does of Nall” is the game plan. Never heard that with GA around. Was GA the one holding everyone back? We’re about to find out.

  12. Is it me or was that play calling perfect and exactly what we all wanted since game 1?

Not sure who to blame. Was GA holding back McGiven? Did Hall tell McGiven how to play call?

That was impressive and a completely different set of plays.

  13. Why this style of play calling hasn’t been in use all season is one of the universe’s great mysteries.. I realize they are fired up, and CU isn’t at the level of teams we’ve been playing.. and this very well could still fall apart..

But at least it looks like we have competent plan

  14. Well so much for that haha…

The CO WR also dropped that slant that would have been a TD on the first drive, too. Maybe now the D truly will be the problem.

  15. Felt the 2nd and 8 pass was unnecessary. Plow Nall through there and get at least 3-4 then you have all kinds of options. Of course incomplete-penalty-incomplete.

  16. Back to back quality possessions.. Keeping our D off the field.. This is is the formula, it’s been obvious since ohhhhhh last year!

  17. I’m baffled, it looks like we have a real offensive plan. How are we going to stay outta the end zone if we keep this up?

  18. “When you come to play in this stadium, this environment, it’s hard. You can get lulled to sleep”
(Or something close to that) Thanks Yogi Roth

  19. We really need to start converting these drives into TD’s. Our defense isn’t going to hold much longer.

…I feel like I’m living through the MR years

  20. How the play on 3rd and 19 wasn’t blown dead is beyond me. OSU defender was hit the lineman before the snap, that is a dead ball foul. PAC refs are garbage.

    Still gotta cover though.

  21. Well Hall is already a better clock manager than Bicycle Mike and even Erickson. Not that its a high bar to reach…..espcially compared to Riles

  22. Really bad clock management there. Gotta take the TO with 12 seconds left with the ref says in bounds. Gives you one shot at the end zone. If missed, then kick the FG. Hall’s first big error.

      • But Yogi said “A+ clock management” because Hall called a TO with 3 seconds left. It was actually an F because he missed a shot at the endzone. I’m giving him a break on it for sure since it’s his first game, but it should be noted that was not A+ management.

The management leading up to that play was pretty good, though.

    • Sorry, I jinxed him. I posted that right before the play where our receiver somehow didn’t get out of bounds. That’s what confused everyone I think. But UP UNTIL THEN, it was done much better lol.

      • It shouldn’t have been confusing, defender pushed him backward out of bounds, by rule the clock keeps running. Official signaled immediately that it was running.

    • Could have been better but he didn’t freeze like GA/Riley might. If that ball would have been spiked with 2 or less seconds they end the half. Him calling TO saved 3 points.

Loving Hall’s energy and joy out there. Different offensive style is due to him alone.

Beau and Hall together could bring a lasting joy and energy to Corvallis. Hall needs to remain on staff. Those two could be a very solid nucleus for a winning program.

    • Pretty well shoots that whole “Cookus is a dick that ruined the special teams” line of shit.

Seeing as how he doesn’t even coach them.

  23. Hmmm, Jake Cookus-quality control manager. With that title he can not be coaching players on the field. Angry where did you get he was coaching the special teams?

  24. 312 yards of offense for OSU in the 1st half. Much better than under GA.

Got to get this win today for Hall and the State of Oregon.

  25. I hope the offensive play calling doesn’t get conservative in tbe 2nd half. They need to stay aggressive with the bunch formations, wildcat, etc.

  26. Hm, back to the same ol’ 2nd half implosion.

Not sure why they were going deep there. Key to winning this game is/was moving the chains and milking that play clock. They were doing it, then randomly go deep and find disaster.

  27. Nice stop there. Need a long, run-based drive capped off with a TD here to have any chance.

I’d like to see more screens. Also would like to see Tyner get in space on one of these plays.

  28. Exactly what we needed. Nice play calling that drive…short passes, runs, etc.
Really good playing all game except for that one deep shot that got picked. Don’t understand going deep there even if it worked.

Now we need a stop and then milk this clock/get out of Dodge.

  29. The play calling is noticeably excellent except for that one deep ball. What is up with that?
I wonder if the media will ask, or if we’ll get a real answer. Something is up. It can’t be that GA was limiting McGiven so much, can it? GA claimed he gave the coordinators total control…

Someone who knows what they’re doing is calling this game. I just don’t see how that can be McGiven.

  30. Announcer on alleged “incompletion:” WHAT AM I MISSING?

Answer: The DB grabbing our guy as he’s trying to catch it for one thing

  31. Even with that beer gut, Tyner was so fast on that 8 yard run. Great complement to the other two backs.
I really like Tyner. Wish they’d get him more carries and in space on some screens.

  32. That’s exactly what wearing down the D with the run game looks like. They were powerless to stop it at the end of the game, even without our best offensive lineman.

  33. Crap, gotta take an L AND hear sunshine pumping all week since we didn’t get blown out for once.

Btw, how does a five star kicker have such a week leg and long of 40?

    • That is a very good question. Five stars, imo, means you’re pushing 60 with maybe some accuracy issues.

Then again, I would have to accept that rankings aren’t subjective.

      • What, does this one good game wipe out the past six games of bad playcalling?

Didn’t figure you to be the type to be so easily swayed by a single game.

        • I’m not swayed. I want to know who called this game and why it looked the way it did.
          Not convinced that was McGiven.

Also, give credit when it’s due, and this game was well-called on O.

          • It seemed like the type of game they have been able to execute against teams with shitty run defenses. They just haven’t played many teams like that this year until today.

  34. Would rather get blown out again than lose like that. Fresh staff can’t get here soon enough! Maybe we can get some guys who won’t run off all the quarterbacks next time.

On the plus side, this makes it less likely we end up with an inexperienced head coach.

  35. Great effort and the offense showed lots of promise today. The run game with Nall and Tyner was great. Defense just needed one stop on that last drive but couldn’t get it. That said, DG showed he can throw the ball and the receivers did an excellent job catching. Overall, great performance by the Beavs…just a couple of untimely penalties and a little short on the FG try. Choukar 4FGs today, but if the offense could have converted just one of those attempts to a TD…..well…I like the energy on the sideline and Hall gets an A- or B+ for his first game. One comment on the negative side….I would have liked to have seen them utilize TT a little bit more than they did.

        • He’s not elite given his condition, but he’s fast twitch for sure….and we lack those types of guys.

Even with a beer gut I bet he runs a 4.40

No reason not to run at least three screens per game to get him in space.

          • Haha. Yep.

His talent is unreal. If I were an NFL GM I’d sign him as an undrafted FA just for those reasons. He’s not physical enough, but get him in shape and throw him a few screens each game/3rd down back, and you might have a nice NFL player. Theo Riddick type back.

    • “The run game with Nall and Tyner was great.”

The problem is this was statistically the worst rush defense other than Portland State that we played all year. Fools gold, like the Arizona and Oregon games.

  36. And by “rock bottom”, I mean you have one shot here to ride the emotions of the coaching change, at home, O plays great, OC calls a great game, etc, and to have the D fail. That’s a rock bottom. Loss that rips the heart out of all (fans, coaches, players).

Sure, the offense was a bright moment. Horse shoes and hand grenades.

Hall did a nice job getting a reasonable plan in place. I was impressed with his game plan. It was spot on. If we don’t hire him as HC, maybe he gets some looks at non P5 schools. His only error was one clock management decision (it might have made all the difference, because we lost a throw to the endzone because of it and then lost by 3). It’s not only a game of inches but a game of seconds.

    • Isn’t rock bottom fair anyway?

We have one win and it’s most likely we lose the rest of our games.

Our one win came against a currently winless FCS team. We were their closest loss though 6 games so far.

Our head coach gave up on us and quit midseason.

      That’s pretty terrible.

      • We’re definitely in a bad spot, but Rock Bottom is as bad as it can get and I think it could get worse. If the players quit and stop enjoying the game, then that would be worse. Also, I think this team now has a better chance at a CW repeat.

        • I guess that’s fair. The players haven’t become apathetic. Other than that though we’re basically at rock bottom.

Is Herbert out for the season? That’s the only way I think we have a shot at winning the Civil War.

  37. Beavs needed to run on 1st down once on the 30 yard line. Thought Nall would have been likely to get 5 or more yards and Beavs would have been in much more comfortable FG position. Then on 2nd down the playbook would have been wide open. Those last 3 plays were not done well.

Get Beau on the phone this week Barnes and start figuring out an offer. 5 yr. 7.5 million should get it done. Save the rest for new coordinators and a recruiting guru.

  38. I also think this is the other “rock bottom” point I was trying to make:

The Beavs controlled that entire game. More plays, more time of possession, actually looked like the better team. Swiss cheese D at inopportune times…CO missed wide open WRs early. I think that gave us a false impression we were in this game, TBH. But when you’re handed an opportunity like that you have to seize it. Rock bottom.

  39. It’s hard to get a read, I don’t think Colorado is very good this year (awful run defense). Beavs had the benefit of some emotion and being at home. Had to settle for fucking FG’s, when TD’s could have lead to a blowout win. Kind of what happens to shitty teams. If they are competitive next week against Stanford, then I will think something better is happening. Win on the road against Zona, then you have an accomplishment.

  40. I liked the spirit that came out to play tonight. We lost this game in the red zone one field goal at a time. I don’t feel as gross as usual but loosing by 3 after controlling TOP really stings.

    • I disagree. We lost this game on D.

O played ball control/pound with the run game, which is what we’re built for, and for that style FGs are fine. The only FG I had issue with was when Hall didn’t call the TO and missed at least a shot at throwing for a TD.

      • You are not going to win in the P-12 kicking field goals most of the time, but the defense needed someone to step up in the 4th quarter and they actually played their worst. Story of the Beavers.

    • I kinda torn…might want him to win so NE thinks he’s good and doesn’t fire him. I don’t want Riley in the free agent coaching pool.

      • Maybe if he wins 100-0, tOSU will fire Urban and we won’t have to face him next year.

In all seriousness, Riley has a 50% chance of winning every game, no matter who he plays.

  41. This may be the best Oregon State plays the rest of this year and they were just ok. The gameplan was better but they were too soft on D and execution overall wasn’t good enough. Was nice to see then with the better offensive numbers for the most part and winning TOP but it wasn’t enough.

Afraid once team hits road they will start losing by 3 scores again and not be in them. Next staff needs to clean house with exception of maybe Hall. But if Beavs start losing by 21 points regularly again then he too will be on the chopping block. Next coach needs free reign to bring in his own staff. If any if this staff has a problem with that they better win games in a hurry. Beavs though are very unlikely to finish better than 2-10 this year and 1-10 still possible.

        • I think its fair to only care about the Civil War at this point. They’d have to win out to go to a Bowl (not happening) so honestly while it’d be nice to win some games I’d personally rather finish 2-10 with a CW win than 3-9 with a CW loss.

If that makes me part of the problem so be it.

          • I think the road losing streak is pretty sad and those types of streaks are usually a hallmark of a dysfunctional program. If Hall can beat Zona on the road, I will be impressed. I guess if they beat the Ducks they kill two, but I don’t want to wait that long. Marked improvement on the road immediately would say to me that the problem was more GA than anything else.

    • Just thinking about this, as well. They did play pretty inspire ball – typically, 500+ yards of offense will win you the game. The outlook for the rest of the season doesn’t inspire a lot of optimism:

Stanford at home – beat O
      Cal away – beat WSU
      AZ away – beat UCLA
ASU at home – beat U of W

Civil War may be another interesting game – but it is in Autzen. Only hope that O is so demoralized about their season they fall apart.

  42. That was an impressive showing by the offense. Only thing I would advise differently is when the team has three timeouts running the two minute drill, get up to the line and run a quick iso play or flanker screen immediately after getting a first down. If tackled in bounds, call a timeout on second down. Play calling was much better overall.

Defense was very disappointing. That’s all that needs to be said.

I think the team can get to 4-8 if similar play calling occurs. Tough one today.

    • something else to be said…need to figure out the red zone. Too damned many field goals today. If just one of them had been a TD we win!

      • Beavs would have won with 75-80% likelihood had they scored on 1st down from the 2 to take a 20-7 lead instead of 16-7. Wasn’t enough urgency there. I think that was when they tried the direct snap to Tre Johnson. Should of just been Nall or Tre on a normal handoff or perhaps a QB sneak or bootleg.

This game did show that you can execute a gameplan per your intentions from Game 1. Doesn’t have to be 7, 8 or 9 games of us yelling for the obvious. Hall told McGiven firmly he wanted to be committed to the run first and when there was focus on that style of playcalling we saw much better offensive production and engagement.

  43. Some people dissing CO’s quality of a team…yet, 2 out of their 3 losses were by a total of 6 points (UCLA and AZ). In addition, one of the best WR corps in the conference and a quality RB with an experienced QB that is very mobile. All in all, a tough loss for the Beavs but the loss was to the defending Southern Division champs who still have a lot of fire power on that team. Wish the Beavs could have pulled this one out, but I a very similar quality and style of play today from the Beavs as I did last year vs. AZ and Oregon. I think today’s performance also gave some of the 2018 recruits that this team and program isn’t as bad as their record might suggest.

Lastly, I watched the Pac12 post game show and they some of the analysts suggested this type of performance would have happened with or without GA coaching. I think that comment was complete nonsense. OSU has been blown out of every game they’ve lost this year especially in the second half. Hall and his staff proved today that the Beavs can play 60 minutes of good football…..GA didn’t prove that this year.

    • So you’re saying the players specifically chose halftime to quit on GA each week and then would regroup and play for him for just the first half the following week?

      • No, what I’m saying is and I said it much earlier in the season posting right after GA announced Luton was the starter….he lost the locker room and the confidence and chemistry of the team. The fact the post game announcers suggested the result would have been the same with or without GA was complete nonsense. We had 6 games with GA this season and the Beavs got blown out of all those games except PSU…It was quite apparent IMO the problem was GA and not the lack of talent on the team. Otherwise, how do you explain Hall’s ability to get the kids to play the best game of the season against a decent opponent. The offensive game plan was sound, the Beavs executed it and the coaching staff appeared to be on the same page.

      • The play calling was completely unlike anything run so far this year. That was the thing that kept the beavs close, gave top and made it a possible win. Agree with angry someone other than the stupid Kevin was calling the plays.

        • Did you catch Hall and McGiven hug each other as the clock ran out? It looked somewhat celebratory inspite of the loss. I’m pretty certain McGiven did the play calling and the happiness was because the game plan worked.

          • No, missed that. If the stupid Kevin called that game, it was only because Hall decided not to give him autonomy. We’ve already seen what he does when the HC gives him free reign.

          • Hall gave credit to the offensive coaches for the game plan; I think he is a smart manager in that regard…………don’t grab the deserved credit for the plan.

Also, he said football is “about inflicting pain”……good stuff, I’m sure a link to the postgame interview will show up here soon.

          • Wait… McGiven came down from the skybox at the end of the game just to get a celebratory hug from C Hall?

            My DVR hates this idea.

And sure… the game plan worked.

  44. Coach Hall deserves some credit for at least organizing a coherent plan even if it fell short.. I liked his presence on the sideline.. It’s too bad for the kids they didn’t get to enjoy a win..

    D stunk it up, sad..

  45. The only way a team wins a game when they are outgained by 200 yards is to not have any turnovers, score touchdowns in the red zone, come up with third down stops in the red zone and not commit penalties. As Luck O’ the Beavs would have it, CU did all of those things today.

      • Did you see that Barnes interview today where he said GA left the program better than he found it? Not sure Barnes has earned the right to make that comment yet and dog Riley. But you’re right, both program’s new coaches will probably be unhappy with what they inherited.

        • The new coach is going to be inheriting a lot of good upperclassmen and some a few really good sophomores. Neither team had experienced QB talent.

GA’s guys seem way more engaged than Riley’s last team, but Riley’s guys at least knew what it felt like to win.

It’s probably a wash between the two situations, all in all

      • Yes, because every time Riley and Meyer are in a stadium together, we get a good look at what kind of coach MR really is.

Imagine how well we start off next year with the coach who thought ditching us was so nice, he did it twice.

  46. Rile E. Coyote has got tOSU right where he wants them. Time to spring the trap. To bad Wile E. Coyote and Rile E. Coyote buy there traps from the same place.

  47. Lol Nebraska 2nd time this season to be shut out at halftime at home. Only happened once before in prior 20 seasons at Nebraska. Good job Riley.

  48. 90 unanswered points by Urbz against the gum chewer stretching back to last season. I bet we’ll play the Buckeyes tougher than Riley has.

  49. tOSU 42-0 over #tpb…riles has lulled the crowd and team to sleep. The ‘best fans in cfb’ leaving the stadium in the 3rd quarter.

  50. Riley looks like he’s trying to literally disappear into his multi-layers on the sideline. That poor, tired, hunched-back, bastard. He needs to find his inner peace so he can enjoy all that fucking retirement money.

  51. Basketball news, went to the practice before the game. The good news is that the team looks like a good team. The new additions will help immensely. Reichle had a few nice 3 pointers.

Still a little short on depth in the front court. Kone was there walking around but did look a ways away from playing.

Barring major injuries, they should be in contention for a NCAA bid.

  52. Can I ask what is wrong with the simple I formation?

I don’t understand football but handing it off in the shotgun all the time when you just need two to three yards and you have 2 play to get those 3 yards.

So it is my understand in the shotgun you handing the ball to the running back 5 yards from the line of scrimmage thus, the back has to run 7 yards to get two years. While in the eye it like 3 Oh, and there is a thing called a full back.

or am I just under thinking the game and
    I’m completely wrong?

        • Lol glad I could help. Your idea is correct somewhat. The key is getting RBs running down hill, weather 5 or 7 yards deep it doesn’t matter much unless there is a pulling guard or tackle. With a pull it needs to be slightly delayed because olinemen don’t have the speed. Where we have gone wrong is the read option fucking up that down hill speed once an RB hits the line of scrimmage (especially with Luton at QB, he doesn’t run with it so no reason to fake the option). Standing side by side reading the d-end or outside LB just slows the process and doesn’t give the RB the needed head of steam to get that extra yard or 2. 6 or 7 years ago it worked because most teams didn’t know how to defend it, now everyone kind of knows.

    • There’s a decent argument for the pistol giving the RB some downhill momentum that makes up for the two or three yards lost on the exchange. But I’m with you. Play-action and misdirection look so goofy from the shotgun. And looks are half of those plays.

  53. Anyone catch one of the announcers for the Neb/tOSU game say that he spoke with Riley yesterday, and I can’t remember it verbatim, but that Riley is hoping to keep his job, but he needs 4 or 5 years to get things going. Considering the guy previous to him had a pretty decent record, I can’t freakin believe him. He is delusional and needs to just hang it up.

  54. McMaryion 8/11 for 180 yards and 2TDs, 44 yards rushing…not even halftime.

So this will be the 5th straight game he’s started and his team won.

    Thanks, Gary.

  55. Listening to #TPB post game. Riley sounds so depressing and clueless. Andersen destroys OSU, Riley destroys Nebby. At least Andersen knew when to quit.

      • My best part of the interview was when asked about when the decision to move the young players to start over the hurt senior, Riley’s response went something like, ‘you know we were discussing that on Tuesday, but I can’t remember or recall when we made the actual decision, it might have been Wednesday, or maybe Tuesday, I believe it was Tuesday we decided we would start him to make sure we could give him a good week of practice to prep.’ Riley has lost his edge and he sounds like someone who is in need of retiring from the game. I was calling the plays tonight pre snap and I was either correct on run and which direction and if I was wrong, if I said run it was a screen pass. One time they tripped me up and passed when I thought run, but Lee ended up scrambling for his life to get a few yards. It was a typical langsdorf called game. Why when they were 3rd and short a yard, they didn’t sneak it instead of running a zone read to the 5 gap, I will never know. Rilay also sounds like a person that is trying to get a job in an interview. Growth is so vague and it eludes to the fact that there is no real goal set in place. It’s just ‘let’s get better each game and build on the little things. Look at hall’s energy level and his 1 goal to deliver punishment. Something easy, something tangible and something that allows him to see who is giving effort and who isn’t. The ones who give effort, play. The ones who don’t won’t play. Plain and simple. I wasn’t able to watch the game today, but I really wish I had done so.

        • We need to find Hall’s quick halftime interview. It was beautiful. He said everything we have all been saying all along. The difference being that he actually got to force his offensive coaches to fucking stick to the plan for almost two halves of a football game.

          Progress.

  56. Nebby fans “This looks like Oregon State East”…taking jabs at us.
Riley is bad pub for us. He needs to get canned so we’re no long associated with his shit show.

  57. Washington down 13-0 to ASU at halftime. Maybe that’s Jonathan Smith’s way of turning us down for the HC job.

Meanwhile, Josh Rosen with 0 TDs and 3 INTs at Arizona. Weird week in football.

  58. How long is Oregon’s QB out?

Another example of how important QB is (duh, but lost on some head coaches)…
They look so bad without him. Taggart being exposed as the fraud he is.

    • He got a broken collarbone, so I looked up the heal time, and found this:

“Most physicians recommend that an athlete with a broken clavicle use a sling for 2 to 6 weeks with both nonoperative or operative treatment based on the athlete’s individual comfort level. During this time, the athlete is not recommended to lift using the affected arm is encouraged to move the elbow and the wrist. Athletes can commence assisted, gentle range of motion when they become pain-free and stop using the sling, usually by 4 to 6 weeks. Overhead activities can begin after clinical and radiographic findings confirm bone healing. Return to unrestricted sport activities is generally recommended 4 to 6 weeks after the complete healing, typically by 3 months after the injury or surgical fixation. Most athletes can ultimately expect a full return to sport participation without any consequences after their fracture has healed with satisfactory alignment. ”

      From: http://www.sportsmd.com/sports-injuries/shoulder-injuries/broken-collar-bone-clavicle-fracture/

Sounds like he’s out for the rest of the season.

  59. J Smith wasn’t concentrating on ASU this week. He was too busy fending off all of the calls from 70 yr old OSU donors trying to talk him into coming back to his alma mater.

If Baldwin winning isn’t good enough, Smith choking isn’t good either. Tee Martin can stay in SoCal too. Leave Venable in Clemson, as well. I do like a run at Sumlin though.

  60. These Nebby radio guys are funny.
They’re pulling their hair out over personnel decisions. I like their effort. Much better than Mike Parker who just makes excuses.

  61. Heard the first half and just reading through the thread.

Sounds like clearly improved play (including most total yards in Andersen era?), and it will be interesting if it was the emotion post-Andersen or if this will become a pattern the rest of the season.

Did the reported crowd size of nearly 34K seem legit? Were they vocal?

Wilson said at the half he expected CO to come out throwing in the second half. Sounds like the OSU secondary played poorly. How many of the secondary 1s and 2s were out due to injury by the second half?

Maybe the competitive effort made a good impression on the visiting recruits.

The narrow loss may be difficult for them to recover from emotionally, a bye week may be a good thing at this time.

Speaking of the bye, I hope they add some direct snaps from center and make it part of the package to give opposing teams different looks.

    • I was there… and ironically I was a season ticket holder and never made a Gary Andersen coached game. But it was a honestly large crowd, but there wasn’t much energy. It seemed like everytime it was getting there the bottom fell out on the field. But I had a great great time. The Beavers out pleased them no doubt…. the Beavers got nowhere to go but up.

So don’t take me as gospel but it was fun, there was a lot of peopl, but we gotta finish some games. Go Beavs baby

  62. I have been to every home game for the last 11 years. The crowd was thin and the energy Mike Parker kept referring to wasn’t quite as advertised.

I walked the perimeter of the stadium a few times pre-game and some of the featured OSU game-day stuff is pretty cringe worthy and should be flat out mocked. They actually had a 60’s style cover band playing wierd 60’s flower power hits on the Parker Plaza for 2 hours before kick-off. Not exactly shouting gameday hype.

The lots seemed 70% full of tail-gaters and it was an early game. Although it was much better than for the UW game.

My view of the game, good effort, far fewer bonehead plays. Kicking fgs instead of Touchdowns in the first half was the ball game. Montez was below average passer, but surprisingly quick when he ran. Too many yds for him simply scrambling. Mobile qb strikes at the heart again. Beavs defense played insopired for most of the game, but is in need of guys to make game changing plays. Hufanga would be nice in the secondary with Morris for 3 years.

Offense looked exactly how I expected them to look starting at Colorado St. So disappointing that the season has turned out this way because today shows that it could’ve been quite different with some sanity in game-planning.

    • Kicking fgs instead of Touchdowns in the first half was the ball game.

While not disagreeing with the idea that any points here or there make a difference, coming out of the half all pass happy cost us the game. Neither D was going to make many plays in the second half, and we gifted them a mistake from the get go.

    • We walked by the 60’s cover band and after a song nobody was acknowledging them at all. This is about 20 minutes before game time so quite a few people we I the area. At the end of the song to try to get some feedback the singer yells “let’s go Oregon Beavers!” My dad shoots back as we are walking by “it’s Oregon St Beavers crap at least know what school you are at” that did manage to get a smattering of chears. Embarrassing

    • Back in ’08, the last game I attended versus Wazzu, I think I remember some sort of an aerobics class being instructed outdoors across from the Alumni center…. I guess it was all part of the ‘fan experience’ that they were perpetuating Sometimes, too much, really is ‘too much’..

  63. Washington’s down 13-0 against Arizona State. Making me really wish we got N’Keal Harry, dude is legit.

Also, Adidas has done a great job with these Arizona State uniforms.

    • Without looking at what is supposedly a list (yes, you deserve that cynicism) I would have to say the URL is suspect.

I will look at the list. But that is a big fail to start your rant.

Did you answer the simple question above?

          • jax did you ever play sports? Or anything past high school? Or are you really JUST A FUCKTARD ARM CHAIR FAN WHO DOESN’T KNOW SHIT about being a college athlete??? Transferring = pussies?? You are a loser who didn’t do shit, but apparently you can deadlift and you did bite for TRUMP….. fucking LOSER jax! Go hit your bow flex bitch

          • Your penis issues aside, I’m not the one claiming someone who is not committed to our team should be playing for our team.

Is MM committed to this team?

Is the reason MM left because he felt he was entitled the starting job?

I don’t care about the latter because he’s not on this team. But that is precisely what everyone continues to say about him. You all say he made an irrational decision, and all pejoratives pertaining to that must follow.

You don’t even leave space for him wanting to be near home because a family member might be sick or because he really wanted to attend Fresno’s public health school. You guys insist that the irrational decision is the only decision. But you don’t want to own it.

    • If you come out saying you hired the wrong [expletive] brain cells, I might believe you more than I would have done at the beginning of the day.

      You’re losing reality.

    • Spewing a number does nothing for your argument that entitlement issues justify transferring. And since your numbers can’t be trusted until you stop with the bunker mentality:
      http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2017_Tracking_Transfer_in_DI_MBB_slides_FINAL_20170627.pdf?sf89552332=1

      4.1%

It doesn’t say they do it for entitlement. Maybe some of them are homesick or don’t fit in the culture at the original school. Maybe some of them can’t handle the academics at the original school.

But you think they’re all entitled?

      • 6.8%

        https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/1GWgj8XfW5xvYqDVXHwkjy6-YFY=/1000×0/filters:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/8771689/DDcYsDyW0AAdlQ_.jpg

Let’s split the difference and say somewhere in the 5.5% range. It really doesn’t matter, because even at 4% that’s a lot of chicken shit players.

So let me get this straight: transferring because you are the best at your position, coach doesn’t realize it, and you have belief in self/want to start = chicken shit, but a mamma’s boy who is homesick is cool? Okay, man. What’s hilarious is after he left you kept saying it was to be closer to home. Yet, you had no evidence of that and were basically making shit up.

        Get well, man.

        • And homesick could be any number of things, from missing your favorite places which embed good routines in your life and profession to simply wanting to be with family.

I don’t begrudge anyone the wont to be with family. You apparently do.

And MM is not the best at any position for OSU. He’s not committed to this team at all, and the best player at any position needs to be committed 100%. No coach at OSU missed anything. They may not have known he wasn’t committed to OSU at all. But they made the right call regardless of motive.

Sorry that hurts your sensibilities. It just is what it is.

        • What’s hilarious is after he left you kept saying it was to be closer to home. Yet, you had no evidence of that and were basically making shit up.

I did have no evidence. That’s why I proposed it as one of a couple hypotheses to counter your absurd conspiracy.

He could have also left because his grandmother has stage four cancer, and his family needs him. He could have also left because he wanted to attend Fresno’s public health school. He could have simply transferred because he studied other coaches, and he didn’t want to get broken in a McGiven O. He could have transferred because he just wanted a change, and he earned that right by graduating.

All of those are valid, rational decisions (except for some variations of homesickness). But you went straight for the one that makes MM look like a turd. And now you wrongly write the strawman that I think all transfers are turds, no matter the reason.

  64. Stars seem to be alligning for Beau Baldwin to get his shot as a Pac-12 Head Coach at OSU. Dominated his matchup vs Grinch, Arizona is suddenly a legit team with their new QB, and ASU scores a Top 5 upset in a game that was not great for Smith that makes it more likely than not Graham gets another year.

  65. Looks like the Beavs might luck out with Bryce Love injuring his ankle tonight. Not that Standford doesn’t have other weapons, but if he’s held out, it helps slow down Stanford at least a little when we play them in 12 days. Take your time healing Bryce!

  66. Sounds like Neb will be hiring an AD this week for large coin. Will they can MR during their bye week or let it play out to the gruesome conclusion?

  67. You know, I’m having a hard time piling on Smilin’ Mike at this point. For Godsakes, he is what he is and there is a huge body of work that illustrated exactly what Nebraska was going to get. Absolutely no surprises there!

The NU fans and media are fucking idiots, living in a delusional past unable to come to grips with the fact that the program has been irrelevant on the national level for the better part of 20 years and through four different coaches since Saint Osborne. They make it sound like this cluster fuck is Riley’s fault. He’s just Callahan part deux. Their neurotic fan base deserves everything they are getting and more. Riley at least gets to walk away with some nice bank! I’m sort of thinking he deserves it now.

    http://www.omaha.com/huskers/football/shatel-nebraska-s-boss-spoke-loud-and-clear-saturday-night/article_203eb1f4-b165-11e7-9583-379b79f484e5.html

  68. I was impressed with Coach Hall in game one.. and I’m hopeful he can continue to get this team moving in the right direction.. I was especially impressed with the quality of game plan considering the hectic week the team went through..

This next game against Stanford though will be a true test.. I think the kids were going to be fired up playing for just about anybody after GA bolted. What can Coach Hall do with time to prepare? Can he get the same level of enthusiasm from the kids now that the drama surrounding game one of the post GA era is over? Can our play calling be competent two games in a row?

I do like his “look” on the sideline and his energy.. I think potentially he has the kind of persona that would appeal to recruits.. He can say he’s played in the NFL, knows what it takes to get there, etc… Hiring the right staff, would be critical for him, with so little experience, but hiring the right staff is critical for all coaches.. Just ask GA.

  69. “The team looked pretty good yesterday! Maybe I just needed a break?

I’m reconsidering this whole thing… after all… technically I am still the head coach. Felt weird not being on the sideline yesterday. Look for another Monday surprise!” GA

  70. hmmmmm it seems like whoever OSU may consider for HC, their team takes a dump….
Jonathan Smith for HC? UW shits the bed.
Grinch for HC? WSU takes a dive.
Let’s start mulling over some UO staff and make sure their season is a total dumpster fire like ours

  71. Imo the O finally played well enough so that it was obvious just how bad the D is. Right now I’m still thinking it’s more a case where there isn’t enough talent on the field rather than a coaching deficiency. Probably a deficiency in their ability to recruit JC players but that’s all that obvious to me. But what do I know.

    • Our two starting CB’s were out and our entire secondary is underclassmen. It’s not entirely surprising that we couldn’t stop the pass when we needed to.

Depth is an issue, but first level talent isn’t.

  72. I like what Cory Hall said in the press conference regarding establishing an identify.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjLAjYioD3E

“Instead of saying we’re going to do what the situation calls for.. we’re going to do what works.”

Glad he made the “obvious” decision and formulated a game plan to his players strengths (i.e running the ball). Even though he might not be the most polished speaker, I like his passion. This is what will get the team through the rest of the season and hopefully is enough to keep him on the next staff.

  73. Hey Riley, good luck flipping OSU’s two 2018 QB commits after yesterday’s Vanilla Ice Cream performance. too freaking funny!
