Home Football Back To Petras…

Back To Petras…

174

He says he will sign December 20th. This is a program changing QB. Riley probably helped just a hair with this recruit, since he was recruiting him at Nebraska and had a relationship.

-Final stats: 199/313 (63.3 percent)
-4,157 yards
-50 TDs
-2 interceptions

More than ideal numbers that show efficiency, smarts (no turnovers), and big play ability with the high yards per completion. I think he should start over Luton. I base this off his film and stats, and feel very confident in the call. He’ll be graduating early to get a jump start on that job. Smart kid who could be a great one.

  1. The one time GA and McGiven appeared to make the right choice with a QB commit, and they couldnt stick around long enough to see the results

  2. It would be even better if Smith can get the kid who’s riding the pine behind Browning to grad transfer. He could start next year and Petra’s could hit the weight room and learn the offense for a year.

This is assuming that Smith runs the same offense that he ran under Petersen so the kid already knows the playbook and can step right in. If he’s letting the offensive coordinator install what he wants or letting Simple Jack have input then all bets are off.

    • I’d take that grad transfer for 1 year for sure. He is a bright guy in interviews and was a 4-star at one point, so he must have some talent. But if we don’t get him, Petras over Luton.

      • Spot on on all counts.
Get that kid, have Luton in the wings because I think he has enough tools that maybe Riley, since we’re stuck with him, can develop as a special project. Blount/a hold over can hang out in the third role.

Then in 2019, release the Petras!

    • I wouldn’t mind the transfer at QB, but I would prefer to have Petras have game reps. The qualification here is looking at the offensive line. If the OL isn’t very good, then let someone else be the guinea pig. Russel Wilson is good enough to deal with a sieve but not a rookie.

      • There will be plenty of opportunities for him to play this upcoming season when the team is losing by three scores at halftime. :’(

  3. Hope the Riley Effect is not to upend the run:pass balance both Smith (as OC at UW) and Lindgren(sp?) seem good at establishing and maintaining.

Petras could really help put people in the seats again and be a real recruiting selling point.

  4. Angrybeavs site was dropped on JBS at ala little after 1 o’clock today. Parker is reading the threads. DIT with more logic that is lost on Parker, these guys are just too close to see the negative. Sad.

  5. Angry, I’ve tried to buy you several cups of coffee but the button does nothing. I’ve tried in Safari and Firefox, but no dice. Any suggestions?

  6. By the amount of down-votes recently on basic comments that caution against Riley, I’d say we have some infiltrators trying to give us a “balanced view” on Angrybeav.com.

Any of you who are new to this site, welcome. But if you are coming in just because you don’t like to hear people say negative things about the Riley era, go bark up another tree. Those thoughts and comments are deeply ingrained into AB lore.

I’ve also noticed that those who actually know MR personally are the most devoted pro-Riley fans. I get it he is a nice guy, but this is college football with millions of $$ at stake, and not a family reunion to gather all of the old gang together for slide shows and nostalgia.

    • I’ve downvoted a few of those. I will accept reasonable discourse but to cast him as the harbinger of doom or the bearer of some contagion is silly. I have to say that IMO the the best argument against his hire is Jack’s. I appreciate that the raison d’etre of this forum is to be an “angrybeav” but I choose not to be. Why am I here? Because you guys are entertaining an often the source of good analysis and information.

        • I disagree. The people who don’t want him have very good reason. I’ve written he’d be a great QB coach for some other team. I even gave him credit in helping seal Petras (likely a solid without Riley, but that he recruited him at NE didn’t hurt and probably helped seal that). If Riley turns out to be an asset, I’ll say he’s an asset. So far, he’s helped on Petras and otherwise been a distraction to Smith.

          • Riley was done 5 years ago…hopefully they can get what little he has left to offer (insight on QBs, talent, etc), but my hope is he is gone in the next two years, and a winning season to follow — by all means if the Beavs go get 9+ wins in the next couple of years, keep it going, but I highly doubt they get to .500 if Riley has a significant role. The game has passed him up in almost all areas.

    • If this has anything to do with our back and forth on Friday, I apologize. In hindsight I was a bit of a prick. We both share a disdain for Riley the head coach, but your’s extends a little beyond mine. Hope we’re good moving forward.

  7. It’s long been suspected that Lindsay Schnell, the Riley family (and Mrs. Banker, once upon a time), monitor the site whenever there is a critical Riley thread and adoringly vote thumbs down. They tire after a while.

    • Contrary to what they may think, the world is not all rainbows, puppy dogs and cotton candy.

There’s some nasty stuff out there. And it takes a thick skin and a strong heart to not let that stuff eat you from the inside out. It also helps you set your priorities based on reality.

It doesn’t take any skin to read a blog that says mean things. It’s a blog, not sticks and stones.

I almost envy their depth of ignorance.

      Bliss, indeed.

  8. I guess we are all supposed to be rainbows and butterflies that Riley is now the face of OSU on anything twitter/recruiting related. How is it ok for JS to tale such a backseat nationally to RIley? Don’t people realize the inevitable outcome is a de facto Riley 3.0 to the rest of the world outside of Benton county?

    • What are you basing that twitter/recruiting comment on?
Riley blocked me on Twitter (lol), so I can’t see what’s going on with his account.

      • It seems that Riley has been the reason for Petras sticking and that is being celebrated by Nemec along with the unintended consequence of those pro-Riley lauding him in any way possible to justify and prove it was a good idea. I’m wondering which ideation genius came up with the theme “The Return” and was that for JS returning or MR?

As we object to MR, pro MR camp pushes his benefits. It will be a constant ongoing issue until he steps down, or we stop caring. I’m close to not caring and rooting for a world-class debacle that gives them all another 28 years of losing, because they can’t get past that anyway.

  9. This blog reminds me of corvallis. I can walk downtown and on campus and more often than not the only disturbances and noise come from the mentally ill and homeless people roaming the streets. Angry beavs is the place where the mental bums on the Internet come to congregate, yell and scream hate together in unison. LFMAO. Go Beavs! Angry, if you want to be a respected at all, might not remain anonymous. It makes you look like a ginormous pussy with all the shit you talk. Unless, angrybeavers is your name, pussy.

    • Well, there is some tough talk……If you don’t like the content of this blog, maybe hop onto another blog that suits your liking. Or, go to that really thought-provoking website for OregonLive…..there’s a bunch of tough talkers on that site too….mostly Duck fans though.

    • Anagrams are Manalurpet (a town in India) and planetarum (the genitive plural of planeta).

Golly Paul. Dumbshit Donald called, and he said your insults are weak. He says you need to add some racial slurs and maybe mention something about beta snowflakes or whatever else the Stratego players make up to help them feel like they know how to play chess.

Speaking of the Corvallis homeless, does anyone else remember Jesus?

      • It’s still funny (funny hypocritical, not funny ha ha) that someone on an internet rant about being even somewhat of a decent person would pick on transient people who talk to imaginary beings and drink wine.

I’m guessing Paul has never stopped to talk to any of the people he derides with such venom. He and everyone in his bubble are too good for the real world.

Did you know that the United States of America, the wealthiest country in the history of the world and whose business culture is experiencing the greatest profits ever but still needs tax breaks, could erase 12% of homelessness overnight…

… IF THEY REALLY GAVE ONE GOD DAMNED FUCK FOR VETERANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People who kick other’s when they’re vulnerable, people like Paul, make me sick.

        • Awww… does this trigger people like Paul?

I guess it could be worse. Veterans on food stamps total about 1.5 million. That’s more than the ~25k active duty personnel on food stamps.

Thank Paul’s God that Dumbshit Donald’s idiocy of a budget proposal (if one could call it that) was laughed out of Congress.

    • Wow.
      Mike Parker, is that you?

What’s amazing to me is folks like you won’t even consider some of Riley’s past faults enough to be a hair skeptical. I’m sure if Riley told you to put on some white jumpsuit and drink that totally safe kool-aid, you would totally do it.

  10. I happen to be fluent in keyboard tough guy, so allow me to translate for big bad Paul.

” I disagree with what you are saying on this message board, but I don’t have the capacity to refute so I’ll come here and attack you personally.”

    Hope that helps.

  11. I honestly don’t get it… MR’s biggest problem was loyalty… His assistants didn’t get it done… If you don’t know that then I don’t want to hear your opinion… Basically your saying if Chip Kelly had Banker as DC the ducks would of had the Natty… Shows the logic Angry spits

    • Mike Riley’s biggest problem is a lack of loyalty to OSU. He has loyalty to a fault to many other things and people. But the employer who has paid him millions of dollars, and will apparently pay him more, is way down the list of those to whom he would be loyal.

It’s like a friend of mine said the other day:

I know exactly who Mike Riley is loyal to–God, family, country… friends, acquaintances, the Spanos family, certain coaches, some media, Nebraska, his retirement properties, his bike, his Prius, some staff… then maybe Oregon State.

  12. Just to clarify I’m not a Riley fan, but I’m not a Riley hater either. I respect what he did for many years as one of only two coaches to have a winning record at OSU during my lifetime, but I was more than ready for him to be gone when he left for Nebraska. I have not been a contributor, but up until the Riley return I have enjoyed reading this board for bits of info and sports perspective, but despite agreeing with the general premise that I think it was a mistake to hire Riley back, I have struggled with the level of negativity around his return for a few reasons.

First of all Angry’s Twitter claims to provide constructive criticism for the program which sounds like a noble cause, but the reality of the hyper reaction with doomsday zombie apocalypse being screamed from the rooftops is it is in no way constructive and is in fact destructive to the University and your cause. There are some very good and logical arguments that are buried in the insanity. The problem is the insanity turns off everyone that doesn’t already agree so very few people hear the logical arguments.

Second I repeatedly hear people who disagree with the Angry arguments told they should find another board. So again what is the value of making the arguments if no one other than those that already agree are present to hear them. Also isn’t telling people who don’t like your opinion that they should find another board kind of like someone telling Angry if he doesn’t like the schools opinion he should find another school?

Third it is kind of mind-blowing to me when I hear the rants about Riley being disloyal to the school. Who in their right mind would not leave for the NFL job so I assume this criticism is more related to him leaving the second time, but are you saying you would rather him still be here as the head coach… I doubt that is what you really want. Also the reality is he may have left by his own choice, but the writing was on the wall, there was significant fan displeasure with him at that point so in reality there wasn’t much of a choice. He left because he felt he had to, not because he wanted to or was being disloyal.

I don’t especially like that Riley is back, I would much rather Smith have brought in other veteran coaches, but it certainly isn’t the end of the program, or the end of the world. It also does not mean that what seems to be the majority of people that agree with the decision to bring him back are all idiots. People have different opinions and have a right to those opinions, would love to see this board get back to some logical conversations and temper the rage and hate which does nothing but fire up a limited audience and exclude the rest that you should be trying to reach.

    • Agree and disagree.

There are numerous people like you who are turned off by the extreme of some arguments. But they also do not become fans of this decision because of that. The people who are against the rehire of Riley are stronger than the vocal minority of those in their camp who may participate in hyperbole.

That being said, that hyperbole is invited by this decision, which makes 9 immediately suspect in his judgment. While I don’t like to participate in or really support the hyperbole, I won’t speak against something invited by such a poor decision.

9 might think he’s stronger than a lack of good judgment. He might be apathetic to a large segment of his potential fans. He could be cynical, and the hyperbole might not even be hyperbole. I think he’s just not as bright as I thought he might be once he was hired and I came around to assessing his resume compared to others like his. He just went back to the poor hire I thought he would have been in one fell swoop.

    • Go find another board is to people who ask for the site to be shut down if angry is wrong. Or for people who strictly come to point out when angry is wrong, but can’t find it in themselves to say he is ever right (which is often.)

Dissenting opinion is always welcome, just be ready for counter points and discussion.

      • I’ve seen a few people saying they think Ed Ray should resign because the football team sucks. That’s pretty insane. Many people here don’t seem to understand how an athletic department works, let alone a large university.

    • In what universe is the loyalty question not valid?

Departure #1: I have no problem with him rolling the dice on the NFL, but what he did was much like Willie Taggart’s departure for FSU. He treated our school like a stepping stone so this is a valid strike 1.

Departure #2: Most certainly demonstrated a lack of loyalty to the University. He had a lifetime contract, but he was already actively squandering potential. He wouldn’t quit Banker when it was becoming apparent he didn’t know how to stop our rivals from fucking murdering us starting with the ’08 game and he didn’t jettison Coach Langsdick when he became the worst. playcaller. ever. Instead he demonstrated no desire to improve and let us get beaten up by our rival year after year after year. Am I the only one that realized when we got murdered in ’08 that there was a new sheriff in town and that sheriff was Chip Kelly?

All Riley had to do was hire an up and comer…gee…LIKE FUCKING SMITH as part of his staff, teach him how to call plays, allow him room to tinker or conversely, start paving the way for Heyward to become a bright spot…instead we saw him dick around with the same dumb fucking staff. BDC basically tells him “Hey man…I gave you a helluva contract that lets you retire here…can you at least give us some good football?”

Riley’s response…”Yeah, no. I like my buddies too much. We’ll show you when we have resources in Nebraska”

He runs off, makes history in the wrong direction, and then scampers back

So yeah. If Loyalty means leaving people out of convenience or because you don’t want to ever admit you’re wrong…then fuck that definition of loyalty.

      • I find the loyalty argument weird. If better opportunity comes up people should take it. If Riley were great, I’d have no problem with him coming back 100xs. The weird part about him coming back is fans welcome him with open arms as if he were great, when in reality he has sucked for a long time. That’s the weird part.

        • I’m with you Angry. I guess the gist of my argument is that people can’t say he was loyal to Oregon State because he has been willing to jump ship for greener pastures…AND that while he was working for Oregon State his pride, ego, and unwillingness to put the team/school before his coordinators wasn’t a demonstration of loyalty even while on the job.

I have a really long, drawn out comparison between Riley’s “Loyalty” and that of a porn addict that is faithful to his wife…but I think I’d lose people with it, so whatever. Ha.

          • Think of it another way: how many people have you been disloyal to in your life? It’s human in a way. Almost everyone has a price where they can’t say no. Sometimes it’s not even price but curiosity. You don’t mean to scorn the former party. I don’t think Riley wanted to stick it to OSU. He wanted to try the NFL. With the NE hire, I do think he was trying to avoid firing staff. So you could say he was loyal to them and disloyal to OSU. Which is more important? Depends on perspective. To him, clearly his friends/coaches.

Jack called McM disloyal for wanting a fair opportunity to compete based on merit. I totally disagree with that and find it illogical.

So, the “Riley has left 3 times he’s not loyal” thing to me is horse shit. We should be upset he’s back because the past 6 years he’s been an awful coach. Nothing more.

          • Jack called McM disloyal for wanting a fair opportunity to compete based on merit.

HUGE strawman alert. You would be correct to find that illogical.

My argument with him (since you all insisted on bringing his transfer up every dam day) was that he knew he was graduating in the spring. He had last year and all summer to think about what he was getting into if he joined the team for fall camp. He had a life decision to make. And that decision was ostensibly to further his education.

So in starting fall camp, he has made the mature decision to be a part of a team. He has signalled to them and to his coaches that they don’t need to start planning a life without him, maybe going out and finding some warm body to try and *sniff* replace him as he moves on with his life. He has run at least a couple scenarios for how his camp and ensuing season would or could turn out, and he was mature enough to remain staid in his decision.

Or he went into camp thinking he was entitled to the starting gig. And if he didn’t get it, fuck ’em. He’s got a transfer in his back pocket.

You guys wanted to talk about it, so the logic flows from there. Someone who is competing for a job when they already have one foot out the door is more often than not going to lose that job. I won’t explain this, because you all get bored with talk of competitive dynamics around here. :)

But what you all proposed follows that model most closely… not the rabbit hole you all dug.

          • He loved Corvallis and is on record as saying so, and his teammates all liked him. So why would he preemptively transfer? Makes no sense. I think it went more like this:

“If I outperform Luton, I’ll start.”

“I outperformed Luton, yet I didn’t start, and not only that they named me 3rd string??!”

“Okay, something weird going on here, so I’ll transfer.”

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

          • I’ve run the timeline. I guess I’ll run it again.

            Correct me if I’m wrong:
Tuesday: Luton named starter, the McGiven talks about getting MM reps and maybe planning on running a 2QB system–heavy on Luton to start, Luton gets most reps, GA talks to media afterward and says 2nd string is now up for grabs
            Wednesday: MM doesn’t attend practice
Thursday and Friday: MM runs 3rd string
            Over the weekend: MM transfers

It all seemed pretty straightforward at the time. It was sort of a shock (for the reasons I outlined above). But hey… he had to do him. Good luck.

        • Loyalty is simple. People who quit on you are quitters. If you hire them back, they quit on you in the middle of the season. Or they’ll quit on you in the middle of a game. Or they’ll just quit on you altogether, again.

We’re not the Mike Riley safety net.

          Well… we weren’t.

          Well… we weren’t, anymore.

    • NFL is a red herring. Look at his decision to keep Banker, et al around and bolt for Nebraska when the seat got a little warm, rather than do what it took to get us out of the nosedive he started. Too much loyalty to mediocre coordinators, not enough to his employers.

  13. Oregonian states that Petras may not sign early and sounds like he still could be on the fence. Are they just no in the loop or do they have some inside knowledge?

  14. Sounds like that Tazhawn Henry kid I mentioned last week as a potential visitor, will be coming to OSU for a visit. He’s the teammate of Kase Rogers, out of Lamar HS near Houston.

  15. I’m not sure where people are getting the site has “lost our mind”…we’ve always been anti-Riley/mediocrity. He’s a symbol of it. So yeah, of course we’re going to be passionately against it. I never saw any crazy arguments. The arguments are all based around him blowing chunks late at OSU and at Nebraska. Historic lows at the latter. And Riley’s general mindset and attitude. He looked lost, completely out of games mentally at Nebraska. My guess is the people who don’t know that didn’t watch Nebby games and see how bad he was. He got even worse than his final years at OSU.

Now, you can make arguments like “He hated NE and wanted to be back home”. Fine, make that all you want. But don’t tell people they’re crazy for seeing how bad Riley has been for 6+ years.

    • What’s interesting is so many people saying they don’t really like the Riley hire but it’s not that bad. They’re basically saying we should just live with it and not complain about it. They sound a lot like the people who said we couldn’t get a better coach than Riley. They would say stuff like “sure he’s not going to win us a championship, but he’ll get us to a decent bowl game every few years”. What they don’t understand is that there is a large group of Beaver fans who don’t want to settle for that. It’s not just the hire of Riley that we don’t like, but it’s also the fear that his followers will continue to settle for a low threshold of success and won’t push the administration beyond what they are accustomed to.

    • For me im wear about his attitude and demeanor so i get that argument. But i think some don’t feel that its a doomsday scenario. He still has like 50 years coaching experience. His value is in recruiting contacts, qbs, good offensive mind.

I would be worried if he was calling plays or hc but i think his role will basically be administrative and recruiting (hopefully). Time will tell. Im not happy about it but i get why smith did it. I just don’t see it directly costing the beavs games.

    • I wouldn’t go so far as to say “lost our mind.” The case against Riley as a head coach is about as open and shut as can be as far as I’m concerned. The problem comes from being in a resonant echo chamber where in order to be heard to have to continually escalate the rhetoric which because of the positive feedback is further amplified. It can make discussion difficult. Personally, I appreciate subtlety and hearing people speak of Riley as being Grima Wormtongue turns me off. I would not have made the hire for the reasons you (and Jack) have enumerated. I think those make a lot of sense. But the reality is we don’t know his role. (“Assistant” is typically the guy that does all the stuff the main guy doesn’t want to do… he has no real authority as opposed to being an “associate” head coach.) The teams where Riley was an assistant were generally excellent.

I hope that trend continues and would be happy if my initial feelings are incorrect. It won’t be the first time.

      • Well, not everyone is going to speak in a way you like. Sounds like your issue might be with the phrasing. I grew up watching zombie movies. Zombie bite is hilarious/reference to those movies to me, but if you didn’t watch those movies and don’t have a dark sense of humor, then you’re not going to get it or like it. It doesn’t make it insane. It’s a good analogy for infections. I’m straight forward and brash. If you don’t like that, then so be it, but the message is valid.

  16. If you look at PollyannaBeavs – uh, I mean Benny’s House, and AngryBeavs, it’s amazing how much Riley divides the fanbase. Never seen so much infighting, even if generally pro-Riley there and anti-Riley here.

    • definitely don’t want to count our chickens with Crocker. Chase Cota just pledged to UCLA over Oregon today, so they’re going to go hard after Crocker, and they already were pretty interested in him since most of their WR class has decommitted after Taggart left.
Trying to track down if/when Crocker plans to visit.

Also, just FYI to any Sedge readers bitching about angrybeavs and beavrecruiting. It was known that Tazhawn Henry would be visiting last week. I posted it about it on the 7th.

      See here: http://angrybeavs.com/football/13460#comment-274027

I would venture to guess that was much earlier than it was on the Sedge board, and quite possibly the reason your site owner(who follows me and reads angrybeavs) followed up on him, so…..you’re welcome??

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJhPLGMhRuQ

      • I would venture to guess that was much earlier than it was on the Sedge board, and quite possibly the reason your site owner(who follows me and reads angrybeavs) followed up on him, so…..you’re welcome??

Fact is we break more news than the other sites now. That wasn’t even a goal of this site, but it happens now. Those goons will never be thankful or apologize. They will instead whine and complain if you get one thing wrong or don’t know about a recruit.

        • I dont even care about who broke it first, but don’t accuse me if stealing information I tracked down myself. Especially when the timestamps say it is impossible for me to have stolen it. That’s just stupid logic.

The other 2 visitors who I tweeted about today were independently verified as well.

          • You should block Sedge from following the handle, since they’re clearly stealing info. The Sedge owner wouldn’t let me on his site, yet he reads mine.

          • I confronted Mike about it over DM. He says he hasn’t said anything on his board about it, but I have one of their readers telling me otherwise. So…..somebody isn’t being truthful…..
They have other people who follow the beavrecruiting account and then post about the stuff they find in the paywall forum anyway, so blocking Mike would only remove one barrier, but the other people on there who want to pay for free info will keep doing what they’re doing.

At the end of the day, the more OSU fans who get informed about OSU recruiting, the better. That’s the main goal. To drum up excitement for OSU recruiting over as large of an audience as possibe, as UN-exciting as that may be.

          • The funny thing is, he called me once and offered me a free account on his site. Wanted me to have fake conversations on their board and pose as a paying member, in an attempt to build up a false community of readers/followers. He also set up another fake account for someone I chat with, but got cold feet with Angry.
You can go look it up, I was “Beavertales” or something like that.
He wanted me to promote his articles and other stuff from his site too, which I did willingly. But he started getting needy and it was really a 1 sided relationship, so I told him to close my account and walked away from it.

            All true.

Maybe I should block him, since he isn’t even willing to talk about the BS being spread on his boards.

  17. Greaves take on Riley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivGmg_rRjWA

^ That’s great and all, but why didn’t he do that at Nebraska? If someone can address that, then maybe I can warm up more to Riley as an AHC/recruiting role. Greaves takes jabs at Andersen because of his poor record (with Riley recruits mostly), but fails to see/address that Riley had NE at historic lows.

Interesting that we’re back in on Crocker and now a favorite. Hey, if Riley starts paying off in recruiting great. I’ll be thrilled. I’ll feel bad for Smith, though, because any recruiting success seems like it will be given to Riley. It will be interesting to see this Spring if the media hovers around Riley every day for the easy interview, and if so, what message that sends.

    • I sort of feel like Riley’s time has passed and it was not necessary to have him on staff and if it was necessary then the administrative should have had some balls and just hired him back as HC and taken whatever heat was coming their way.

In some ways, I’m ambivalent. The program is so bad anything might be an improvement over Shitfest ’17. I guess if the team starts behaving like a Riley team then it was a poor decision, if it becomes a better team because of Smith and Riley is not a negative factor then no big deal.

      • It’s not as bad as things seem. Rumors of coaches getting hammered before games, etc. Smith and even Riley will be upgrades over that. Get a QB (check) and some play makers and things can look different quickly.

        • Rumors begun by who? Someone whose hairdresser’s cousin’s girlfriend had a friend who worked for some hotel?

You better make sure none of the people involved with passing the rumors were associated with Riley in any way.

  18. Women’s team cruised earlier today.

One thing learned today, pivec carries a 4.0 gpa! That’s damn impressive. And moonlights throwing javelin for the track team.
