What do ya have to do to make $1.7million? Check ABC TV 9am Saturday for the broadcast. Some questions about the new staff, team, and culture will be answered by noon. Others will certainly remain.
Let’s use this thread to discuss expectations, hopes, and what you see as answered questions and those that remain. Maybe hold the “OT” stuff to a minimum?
GO BEAVS!
First.
My expectation is a slaughter in line with Custer vs the Indians, but with a better marching band.
My advice, drink heavily my friends.
As an Indian, I’m taking that as a Beaver win! F Custer!
Haha
My expectation is noth8ng short of brutal slap to the face of the big10, I will drink plenty of water, and I don’t care to see bands marching. An answered question will show through home bias why need to be scheduling home and homes. Questions and seeking answers are good things.
I’m expecting to see an organized, cohesive Beavs team that gives 60 minutes of effort.
My question is, just how accurate are those who predict a vastly improved pass rush along with much better than average LB play? Three sacks would be a pleasant, not entirely surprising answer.
Elu Aydon…….I’m actually expecting him to be effective, notwithstanding the added weight.
Thank God for baseball.
Da Beavs make the Wall Street Journal.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-other-osu-aims-for-turnaround-1535713200
Not a subscriber so, I couldn’t read the all the article, but I’m delighted that the photo shows Jonathan Smith with Erickson, not Riley. Rachel Bachman has seemed to write kindly of the Beavs – I guess since her days at the Oregonian?
Undefeated so far!
It’s really no different then playing USC in the Coliseum. I think we at least cover and keep it respectable for the first half. End up losing by around 24.
But still have my orange colored glasses hoping to shock the cfb world.
GO BEAV!!!
Wow. Bad call lol
Ot: good luck to Nall. For as much as we’ve made/discussed his decision he made the most of his preseason opportunities (7 ypc with a couple long runs after contact and a td) and it sounds like many analysts predict if he doesn’t make the Bears 53 man that he won’t clear waivers i.e. Not safe to bury on a practice squad.
Maybe not getting tee’d off on by the Buckeyes today was the right decision. Saved his body a bit of abuse and gets a healthy paycheck.
At the Alumni event, ED Ray just ragged on Meyer for “not showing up” it was pretty funny
Did he do the same for Gary Anderpants?
He showed him his A game
I have that familiar feeling of dread that I felt every Saturday during my storied tenure. Will stick with it on tv until and if it gets embarrassing.
Go Beavs
Looks like plenty of seats still available
Let flow the Bloody Mary’s of hope!
And remember why they play them!
$1.7M.
GoBeavs!
OMG. What happened with Urban Meyer? Had not heard about it.
Ohio state starting safety Fuller is OUT-illness
Luton got rocked on that Bradfor pass
Yeah, replay confirmed it. Should have been a late hit on 2 buckeyes. Nailed by both
Luton gimpin already?
There’s the Beavs we’ve come to know and love
Just when we were kicking their ass…Luton
Luton should never play again … at least for the Beavs.
LOLton.
Sloppy Jake with his first turnover. O/U was 3. I took the over.
I think we all know this is gonna be a blow out but the inability to take the snap is ridiculous yet 100% believable.
Wasn’t expecting anything near a close game today, but hate to see the team kill themselves with unforced turnovers.
Luton the turnover machine is back for 2018 gentlemen…
Gotta blame the coach for starting someone who is so obviously sloppy with the ball.
Same decision was on GA last year overlooking the obvious (McM) and now it’s on Smith. Though, admittedly, there is no McM on this roster. Blount does seem better than Luton from what we’ve seen of both.
And Luton is out. Didn’t see if it was due to injury or just that shitty play.
Love that punt strategy. No fair catches
Hey now!
And on cue, Blount in.
He might suck, but at least he’s not Luton.
Nice spark from blount
Just got to turn it on and that was a nice looking drive.
Now why didn’t the coaches see Blount is better?
Takes an injury for them to make the right decision. Sad.
Go Beavs.
All practice reports and definitely the scrimmages indicated Luton was better. Like it or not, even if Smith preferred Blount (not saying he did) he likely had to start Luton for the same reason Andersen should have started McM last year.
I read Blount had the play of the day multiple times and looked sharp. I think some reporters were lazy and read Luton was a senior who started last year, did some lazy writing and fans just read and believed it.
Exactly, everything I heard from people I trust said Blount was much better.
It wasn’t even close in Bend which is all I can speak too
At the Reser open scrimmage Blount looked better and the stats backed it up. Only time I saw either play this summer
Saw the exact opposite in Bend
Honestly, neither was winning this game and I expect all 3 guys to play at some point this year so I can’t gemake worked up about who got this start.
OMG did we just hit a receiver in stride on a slant?
JS is already our best coach in 20 years.
Oc taking advantage of Ohio states aggressiveness with screens.
Defense is physically outmatched and they’ll wear down fast so beavs won’t be able to keep up.
Unfortunately our D depth is bad and now that unit has to get on the field again with little rest.
Ohio State’s D looks bad. Any staff with Schiano on it has holes. He’s a lot like mediocre Mike.
Beavs should let them score on their first play so our D does not get worn down.
Agree, than go CO School of Mines and never punt. Just try to score every possession. Then go for 2.
Have you been to a CSM football game? They’re fun. I went to a couple of games when Stitt was coaching – before the stadium remodel.
Not yet. I’ll have to look at their schedule and see if there’s any opponent I’d want to see. If so I’ll go check them out.
At least our tackling seems marginally better
Not on the TD run.
True, but overall still marginally better, I like it.
Especially considering the opponent. D is wearing down already, though, so it will likely get worse. Need depth.
Always wondered what good play calling on offense looked like.
I love these refs
Dumb 3rd down play call. The way these refs are caling PI throw it up again. Jeez.
Bad audible by Blount you mean. I agree dumb play
Meh, I would’ve ran a screen but a draw isn’t terrible there
Damn Wilson was playing good. Hope it’s no serious
Dwayne Williams hasn’t looked good. Need more from him
Good throw on the rollout.
Oh god they showed Riley
Riley hanging out doing nothing instead of coaching his new team. Sounds about right!
I know you’ll take every opportunity to attack him but you do realize it’s his “new” teams offseason right? Coaches often “don’t coach” their teams during the offseason.
Real coaches work all year.
Lol, yeah, “real” coaches are in the office 24/365 and never do anything else at anytime.
Okay, if you say so…
All those photos of Belichik fishing in the offseason must mean he’s not a “real coach”
Right?
Belichik even has the balls to take in an occasional Red Sox game, fore the fake coach
Did you seriously just compare Mike Riley to Bill Belichik? I get your analogy here but Belichik has won something meaningful. More than once. He EARNS his paycheck. Riley? Not so much and hasn’t won dick. Ever. Unless you count those championships from 30 years ago in a league no one gives a shit about.
I don’t know how you, or anyone for that matter can defend Riley with a straight face. But he’s such a nice guy. And he tries.
The fact of the matter is he’s a shitty coach and the game has passed him by. Oregon St needs to start distancing themselves from him and stand on their own two feet. I know I’m not in the minority who feel this way.
Riley is a fraud who has made a career out of a false narrative and bilked millions of dollars from idiots who’ve bought his schtick. And the incestous attitude of Oregon St and many of its fan base is sickeningly pathetic.
No, I made no such comparison, try again
That said, I don’t know how anyone can claim coaches do nothing in their lives beyond coaching with a straight face
Why are you assuming I said it with a straight face?
WOW!! you really dont like RIley.. We get it!! but there doesnt seem to be one story or comment section on here where you dont bring his name up.. seriously dude
On the radio broadcast Parker points out they talked to MR on the bench, and, MR said “this is awesome.” That’s hard hitting shit there.
lol
Always the philosopher.
http://angrybeavs.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Riley-Timeout.jpg
oh we have our first Riley sighting
Three man rush and an easy sack.Ouch.
This line is gonna get someone killed.
They already did.
A RB screen is badly needed here. Even if it fails it will slow down the pass rush
No time to pass.
I know it’s only 1qtr,and we are down 14 but given the opponent I’m surprised. Offense came out with a plan that’s working, and defense, fundamentally, looks better. If we had a deeper defense I think we’d be hanging tougher.
Is it just me? Seems the Ohio receivers are given a 20 yard buffer.
Is that before or after the catch?
captain obvious here but buckeyes are done playing around now I think they are going to just pin their ears back come after the back field and our line will not be able to do much about it
Jordan C, misses the FG, one of the first disappointments today. He was supposed to be a “weapon”, not so much on that attempt.
He is in mid season form.
Well he has been a weapon. For Ohio State.
Let’s not forget kicking the ball out of bounds after we tie the game.
Ohio State is down on their QB? Looks pretty good to me.
Our D looks like Zony’s D at the end of 2015. The only reason Dwayne Williams should be out there is because there is nobody else who can stand around like he does… unless it’s when he’s helping to make our special teams look much worse than they were last year.
The O looks decent…. not mistake-free or good… just decent.
there is nobody else who can stand around like he does
Mike Riley?
But can he chew gum at the same time?
*2016
Ohio State treating this like a scrimmage now. Good practice for the Beavs also. Good for our guys to see the level of intensity and execution that’s required to compete at this level. I have some optimism for the future. Beyond this year future.
The transfer QB and LB were nice gets. Need better recruits, though. Not landing enough game changers…just landing filler type players.
I’d take some D-line “filler types”.
I know Ohio’s offense is good but our defense looks pretty bad. The very small flame of hope for a 4 win season has been blown out by Ohio’s wind as they go running by with the ball.
Ohio State could get to the title game, so I’m not sure it’s a great or fair benchmark for the Beavs and their 4 win hopes. Next week will decide that.
Per Jim Wilson, “We won’t learn much today, given the caliber of the opponent. We’ll know a lot more after 3 games.”
Their D line is fantastic.
Thank God we dont play the 11 more times this season.
I’d say this was the most accurate preview out there!
https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1035539589631332352
They just showed our rushing stat to be -19. I assume that is because of the sacks?
Do we have to come out in the second half?
$1.7/2=$.85
Blount doesn’t belong at this classification of football
We don’t have a QB who does.
Tom Brady couldn’t be successful with this garbage O line
Crazy Leg Colletto time? Might as well see what he can do.
Maybe he’ll crazy leg whip a few Ohio St defenders and knock them out of the game?
Won’t matter if Houston can’t do his job!
GA legacy….no center.
Wasn’t GA an awful C during his playing days?
Hm…
I miss Jim Gilstrap. He was the man behind OSU’s decent mid-2000 teams. Beavs became horrible after his players graduated. Riley got credit for those teams, but it was all Gilstrap and his eye for talent. We need a guy like that on staff. I have an eye for talent, Beavs, if you want to turn this thing around.
PBH out… embarrassment threshold achieved at the 4:30 mark of the second quarter. A new low, usually make it to halftime.
quitter
What’s with all of these snaps bouncing on the turf now?
Awful center?
Jackson looks good.
Do you mean Jefferson?
Yep thanks
Yeah he looks good.
Bradford has been a pleasant surprise. Lools like a totally different player. He and Irish together give us nice speed options this year. Short is supposed to be fast too
Kinda hard to throw them the ball when the QB is on his back.
Glad the Buckeyes are distracted by the Meyer scandal, otherwise this could get bad….
Checked ESPN’s boxscore page. The only video highlights are of Buckeyes, neither of the Beavs TDs on the page?
Hope Smith et al get some real centers in the pipeline.
Embarrassing themselves on national tv again in a big OOC game for a paycheck.
Same old beavers. Can anyone remember a game where this didn’t happen? My mind went all the way back to LSU.
Penn St? Nope. Louisville? Nope. Michigan? Nope.
MR is getting misty eyed going down memory lane. Ass kicking on National TV. Just like old times.
“This is awesome”
Mike Riley
42-14 coach. At halftime
Did he really say that?
Riley already forgot he’s played at Ohio St before…
In fairness, it was before the game, but, yeah. Obviously he saw what was to come.
Your negative focus seems unnecessarily narrow. They’ve embarrassed themselves on regional telecasts too. UW @ Reser anyone?
Andersen brought this team down to an ineptness not seen since perhaps the 80s(?).
Your reading comprehension is the same.
UW is not an out of conference game.
Andersen brought this team down to an ineptness not seen since 2011.
fify… unless you also think 2011 was worse than Avezzano’s tenure… which I can buy with a decent argument.
Pettibonehead approves of that message.
Blount and Bradford seem to have some chemistry
And they play football pretty well together.
Ha ha ha!
At least Custer didn’t have to come out for the second half.
Did he get sent to the tent in the 1st quarter?
So, my thoughts. I understand we are down 28 points to what will arguably be one of the best football teams in the country this year, but some positive takeaways so far…
Defense: making open field tackles, seems to be doing as well with scheme as you can given the situation.
Offense: Play calling is complementing the players on the field, and the situation i.e. screens and draws. Again, only so much you can do against the best defense the beavers may face all year.
A lot of people complaining about Beavs embarrassing themselves again for a payday, yeah this game probably should’ve never been scheduled. However, the beavers have actually looked better than I thought they would.
I am 75% more optimistic than I was before kick off about the remainder of the season.
They can win 3 or 4 games.
Bigger battle is in recruiting.
The difference between last year’s team and this year’s team is there is no way last year’s team has 14 points right now. Defense still blows.
Maybe I’m just being to positive here but with all the mistakes this team has made there are still some positives out there; Blount has made some good throws and has not thrown any ints or any truly bad balls outside one or two; the WR are playing well.
I’m a season ticket holder so I have to dupe myself in believing that the games are going to be worth going to. At this point if they win 3 home games I’d be extremely happy as sad as that is. Is this what Coug fans felt like too?
If the storm lasts all day and they can’t finish, does this go down as a tie?
GOOD NEWS: Stadium evacuation due to T-storms! Plenty of time for Beavs thin D to rest up, and for Sumner to practice snapping! Maybe tOSU cramps up??…….naw.
Really?
That’s Beav weather. Buckeyes are done!
Lightning delay. Dumping buckets at the moment.
A gift from the Great Beaver in the Sky?!?
My final score prediction: 42-14, Ohio State
If lighting wipes out the 2nd half I’ll nail it!
Take the 2 fumbles away and maybe it could be 28-14. As with other post the Beavs need to recruit some decent defensive lineman.
How can you take the 2 fumbles away, though? Our players fumbled because they’re bad. You can’t take that away. That’s like saying “If our QB threw 4 more TDs we’d be tied.”
Well…yeah.
The second was strategic. If you give them a TD instead of a safety, they only score 7, not 9 points.
Backup quarterback + game one + at Ohio State = bad snaps. It’s not a complete excuse, but they might not be as bad as they look.
And some O line guys. Particularly a couple centers.
Trying to be optimistic.
Fair enough but realize that’s bad logic.
On the plus side. Most teams would be getting their asses handed to them at Ohio State today.
Both lines are small, but the competition will be a little closer talent wise in several of the next games we play.
Offense seems to play pretty cohesively. This isn’t the same old McDerp offense we’ve grown accustomed too. Faster tempo, more creative play calling. Team doesn’t look lost. Major weaknesses at center/qb exchange which need to be fixed, but I see reason for optimism that our current staff is an improvement.
Defensive injuries are showing, but the tackling is better and the team isn’t hanging their heads or looking like they’re blaming their teammates for missed plays. Better communication and chemistry.
Other than the bad snaps, I haven’t seen too many week 1 bonehead procedural penalties like we would normally expect. In fact, the game has been fairly clean for a week 1 game. I appreciate that. No false starts up to this point.
Get through today, regroup and prepare for SUU next week.
Anyone else notice Blount give a pat on the head to an O-lineman after being sacked? I’m, for now, interpreting that to indicate leadership. If Luton is cleared to play next week it will be a turning point type decision for Smith.
I had hoped for 3 sacks by the Beavs today and would have been pleased with 2; so far none.
It could be worse.
Lane Kiffin could be our coach.
Ryan Nall cut by Chicago
Heard he rushed for a 7 YPC avg this preseason and will definitely be picked up by some other team.
I think the Bears were stupid to cut him. He can be pretty good.
OT: Any messages for the Razorbacks? Play them tonight in VB and the visiting team’s parents sit in the row directly in back of us. Planing on wearing my Beav Baseball Natty shirt to troll them.
They’ve recently announced a remodel to their baseball stadium. Expanded the foul territory on the right side, now there is room for 4 Razorbacks to attempt to field foul balls.
https://twitter.com/RazorbackBSB/status/1035235620820594689
I like that one.
So this is going to be interesting in terms of what game they stick with once UW/Auburn begins. One will get shuffled to ESNWS. Historically, when I turn on a Beavs game I have to wait until some boring blowout ticks to :00 before they put us on.
Which are they going to do here?
Seth Collins just got a personal foul in the red zone. Lmao
Already in mid-season form. Having him out of the locker room is a bonus
Seth with a true Jackass play.
Illegal hurdle?
Golly.
Who wasn’t covering #83… again?
Crazy legs to Pierce TD!!!!!!
That helped his average.
AP’s got wheels.
we can double that with another long run wow
That was surprising.
I know it was against an inexperienced back-up. That explains the poor position and angling. But he just flat outran the kid to the corner and beyond.
Meanwhile more and more of our guys are getting hurt. Pretty soon our cheerleaders will be in on defense.
Yeah there’s not gonna be a single starter ready next week.
They can bring back the Sports Bra Uni.
Urban is going fire his DC…..no wife beating needed.
He will probably beat his DC’s wife
Haha
AP immediately thanking O-linemen after TD #2 of the 3rd qtr.
Is that an inflatable helmet players are coming out of in the UW-Auburn game?
Why do these guys keep calling the red zone the red area? Is there some sort of trademark on red zone now?
Nice interception and return by wilson.
Crazy Legs can’t throw.
No touch on the goal line passes. I think with Blount we score there.
Just came to say the same thing. Blount scores there. Not sure why crazy legs is even in.
Agree.
Here’s my guess:
Blount is now the starter. This game is a loss. No reason to compromise the rest of the season so out goes crazy legs.
I’ll buy that.
Exactly
Eggers with the unintentionally funny tweet at Parker’s expense
https://twitter.com/kerryeggers/status/1035967341643874305?s=19
I don’t know why anyone cares so much that he did that that one time. Not like nobody’s ever gotten drunk before and done something silly. It’s not like he was cussing anyone out or anything, either.
It’s funny. He was at a Denny’s eating napkins. Not silly funny though
So what? Again, he wasn’t being a dick to anyone or exposing himself or anything like that. He chewed on some napkins. Nice fodder for people who don’t like him, I suppose, but nothing horrible.
Why can’t you like him and still think it’s funny?
If that’s his lowest low, he’s golden. I’ve scarfed couple pie shop meals at drunk-thirty in my life.
But did you eat the napkins after?
If it was on the plate, it was et.
It is funny when it happens once after a wedding or something. When it happens by yourself while on a business trip it is more sad than anything.
I guess… if you want to be judgy about it.
Satire is tragedy plus time.
Surprised to see that from him.
Agree. As NB said, “unintentional”. On reflection, would “paper towels” been any more classy?
Holy cow!
Talk about a slow painful death. I started watching this game at 9:00 am… 4 hours later we enter the 4th quarter.
I think the game has gone better than expected. Offense was able to move the ball here and there. Alleviates some concern going forward.
Defense was clearly outmatched. Didn’t seem it was a scheme issue, just pure talent.
Agree, also better sideline vibe and play calling.
Yeah I did like the effort and team seemed to be a team and not a bunch of individuals so happy about that. The offense doesn’t look to far off. A better QB and little better line work and offense could actually be pretty good. Defense didn’t look good but they were playing one of the nations top offenses.
Our secondary was checked out for most of the game, and ST looked more than a little shaky. But I think we came out of it even on turnovers.
The O actually looked decent. I can say our O is better than Cal and UNC have on the field right now. I question a lot of the scheme, but we have good to great talent at a lot of positions. I just don’t get an empty set and naked tackles on an obvious passing play. I thought it was Blount’s fault the first time for not rolling out when it’s obvious a static pocket is going to kill your QB. Then it happened to Blount again. Then it happened to Colletto in the second half.
We should dump that play immediately.
But other than that and some obvious weakness at C, we were decent. I don’t remember us putting up 31 in a nationally televised road game in… well… I just don’t remember another one.
Should bring in Willard, give him some time
Agree, and maybe Dukart. Not like he couldn’t still redshirt.
Did Dukart make the trip?
I think he’ll play baseball before he sees time at QB.
Agree. Other than at QB, too soon to bring in the canon fodder guys to reduce chance of more injuries to starters and backups?
Its essentially a scrimmage at this point. Throw in guys who are down the depth chart. Mix it up, and run some plays you haven’t run yet.
Why does Urban get to coach while he’s suspended? That’s not a suspension. That’s work-release at best.
Was wondering the same thing. Is it so they can get away with still paying him for this portion of the season while making it look like he’s been suspended in the publics’ perception?
Nice work if you can get it
And if you get it, won’t you tell me how?
Just curious – anyone know when they started pulling starters? 4th quarter?
Fair to say we put up 31 points (in 3 quarters) against their 1st string?
Pretty sure I saw that maniac D-End in the 3rd.
Well I’m more optimistic about the offense after this game. I didn’t get to see Luton play at all so I can’t comment on how he looked. Blount seemed to be comfortable running the O and made some nice passes when he had the chance. Receivers were a known quantity and looked the part. RBs looked legit like I had hoped.
Defense just had a massive lack of meat up front. Tackling by LBs and secondary was good overall. I don’t know if there will be any relief for that situation this year. Maybe against lighter teams the two down linemen plan will work…
In the last two games the beaver defense has given up 69 and 77 points. Clearly FCS caliber talent on that side of the ball.
It won’t matter how many points the offense does or doesn’t score when your defense is clearly deficient of P5 talent.
Scary
Agree overall but I think you can be a lot more specific. The issue is the D-line.
When your base defense is a 2-4-5 because you don’t have the depth / talent on the D-line to sustain 3 (never mind 4) defensive linemen…you know you’re in for a long season before the first snap.
The offense today pleasantly surprised me. The defense is what I expected.
I agree about the D line. Everything starts up front in the trenches on both sides of the ball. But the secondary was a dumpster fire as well. Other than seeing some improved tackling, I saw nothing from the defensive side of the ball worth writing home about.
Spin it any way you want. Many here are. I don’t care who you are playing. Giving up 77 points is fucking embarrassing and should NEVER happen.
Maryland beat Texass for the second straight year. Tom H better keep his kids home from school this week.
Not that it would have helped the Beav defense today, but of course Xavier Crawford got a pick for CMU this afternoon. They still lost to Kentucky. To me, a better benchmark of this team is if they can comfortably dominant So.Utah next week.
Nall cut from the bears. Will get signed to someone’s practice squad. Huge uphill battle for him to make it.
Injuries is the only route to reg season action now. Likely only going to get one more year to make a roster. Always new blood coming up from college.
Random takeaways:
-Houston is no dummy and has been around FB quite a while; did the Buckeye D-line talent put him off his game? Or have we already seen enough to expect problems at C all season? Don’t think Yanni is the answer.
-As mentioned, AP was thanking his O-line right after his second TD run. He seemed genuine in the post game when he publicly did more of the same.
-Pass rush and LB play………what will they do in the next two weeks? Disappointing today.
-Obvious pluses: 60 minute effort, sideline vibe, play calling
-Penalties……take away D.Williams two quick ones and it was a well played game re: penalties. Coach M gets a big portion of the credit.
-Injuries…….at this point, gotta say could have been MUCH worse.
-Has a 46 point drubbing ever felt like a positive? Seems like this one did; a reflection of how far down this team has been combined with how good tOSU is.
Thoughts?
I’m hopeful. We moved the ball against a pretty good defense. Our defense is garbage, but did anybody honestly think they would be better then they are. What’s nice is we are better then we have been in the last 3 years already. Now we get to see how good of a coaching staff we have.
I think the reason for optimism is that the Beavers, in a nearly unwinnable game, did good things today. Defense needs work, but with time hopefully coach Smith can use his offense as a defense (sustain drives, keep opposing offense off the field, etc.)
Good effort all game.
Some say “I feel good about the offense” and to me, that shows either an unrealistic view of what happened or a lack of knowledge.
Two fluke plays:
Two of the TD’s were completely created by the players; AP’s run was all him. He probably should have lost yards on the play but kept his legs moving and broke through to open space and scored! Blount threw a perfect corner rout within 30 yards of the endzone. Other than that, if you were watching the game, the Beavs absolutely could NOT move the football on offense (at last, not forward). They took a ton of steps back (sacks and TFL). aAnd as of right now, the only play maker in the receiving game is T Bradford?!
1-11 is looking the best case scenario still IMO. And the PAC 12 sucks!
Go Beavs!
So what plays are not created by the players? That is like saying if it were not for those two fumbles the game could have been closer as talked about above. At any rate, as they say teams see the biggest improvement from week one to week two and this team has only one way to go and that is up.
Madden on xbox?
Just bringing up he fact that a couple of players, making plays, does not make a “good” offense. Does that make sense? Consistency, to me, is good offense.
But I am going to enjoy the games and support the team.
Go Beavs!
Wait….someone ran for a touchdown and then one person threw the ball to another person, who then caught the ball and then ran to the endzone? Wow I thought that was football not a fluke. good to know.
Funny stuff and he’s alleging that others are not knowledgeable about football. Yikes!
BB let’s ask a basic question.
If the offense is doing so well, how many yards did the offense gain (taking away Pierce’s 2 long runs)? AP made 2 amazing plays (mostly on his own). My whole point was to say that, I would have been a lot more confident with the offense if they were consistently moving the ball versus have 2 huge plays that basically one person created. No, it wasn’t completely on his own but how come it only worked on 2 plays if the O Line and others had such a great effect on those plays? When the the offense would have basically averaged about 2 yards a carry on all other running plays (minus those 2 big ones by AP), that says to me, that AP made those 2 plays more on his own with a little help. But still, the concern is you’re losing yards or gaining 1-2 yards per carry 90% of the time you run the ball. Yet a great player gets a great cut/makes a couple defenders miss and it happens twice. Does that mean “great run blocking/play calling/ offense”? That’s all I’m saying.
PS- Not taking away from AP’s runs. He, did an amazing job with patience in the hole, as well as straight outrunning some really good defenders to the sideline. But does that= Good offense?
Also, as I said before, I am done worrying about seeing what I want to see. I realize that’s unrealistic. I want to just support the Beavs and enjoy the games.
Go Beavs!
His second run was some great blocking.
If those 2 yards per carry aren’t performed, there are no 2 huge plays.
That’s how football works. You bang your head against the wall enough, and the wall falls down. You can’t simply say, “Let’s take those big plays away because they’re outliers.” You have to include them because they’re a part of the whole.
You can break it down further. I think someone in this thread complained about others talking about technique and not explaining the technique itself. Unlike shorthand for model play, schemes would be decimated by your shorthand. Can you imagine assessing a Coryell or any vertical O with your assessment?
If it was up to me, we’d be running 28 and 49 all game long. That’s my favorite ball control.
^^^^ YES !! ^^^^
I’d go for 60%+ rushes; problem would be if Beavs get down to Colleto it won’t work well unless he comes up with a serviceable arm.
I’m one who feels good about the O. Good, as in, “better than I expected”.
392 total yds vs tOSU seems encouraging when compared to last years average for the season of 334. Just as 31 pts vs tOSU looks good when compared to last seasons average of less than 21.
Feeling good about the O isn’t the same (for me, at least) as feeling as if the Beavs have an O which is SURE to be in the top half of the PAC. But the O has a fighting chance to do that. IMO
EDIT/ADD: BTW, only Penn State, Oklahoma and Iowa scored 28 or more on the Buckeye defense during the 2017 season. Pretty good company for an O built on “Two fluke plays”.
Wish I could have heard the conversation schiano was having with day after pierce ripped off that td run.
You do know that players are supposed to make plays, right? Talk about a lack of knowledge…..
The plays weren’t fluke.
There’s actual talent on our team. You don’t seem to get this concept.
Pierce outran a five star CB recruit, the #1 CB, a top 5 HS player overall in the 2017 class, to the corner and beyond. A fluke is if that supreme talent you say we need trips on himself, and Pierce jogs for 75 yards.
Also, the O Coordinator either has no clue is effing with people, calling this Beaver offense a “West Coast Offense”? What???!??! BS! Looks like any other Spread Option O, that you see all around the country!
Gonna be a rough season too, if Bradford is the sole playmaker in the pass/receiving game (which it sure seemed today)!
Go Beavs!
You do realize that their are multiple types of spread offenses right? Just because you spread a team out doesn’t mean you aren’t using west coast concepts.
And I guarantee the OC knows more than you about everyone of those concepts.
Using some West Coast concepts doesn’t mean it was a West Coast O.
Did you see us run primarily 2-1 sets from under center?
I saw more 0-0 sets with no sprint options than I saw West Coast sets.
I think someone somewhere is just trying to conflate dink and dunk with a West Coast O. While the concepts came from there, it doesn’t make it so.
Young guy, all I’m saying is this is not a West Coast Offense! It’s not. The WCO is predicated on delivering the ball quickly in the 3-5 step passing game while using a FB and/or TE often in the passing game to open up the running game. It is traditionally done out of a two back set and uses a TE with 2 receivers. BTW Young one, the “Spread” offense was the offense that Dennis Erickson brought to Oregon State in the late 90’s through 2002! “Spread Option” is the most common offense in College Football right now, that relies on option, usually out of a shotgun formation with multiple WR sets (3-4 receivers). The pitch man is usually the end man on the LOS but sometimes can be a DT in 4 man fronts. Many of those have an uptempo pace to keep the defense from being able to adjust. So yeah, I think I realize that. Did you already know that? Where does your experience/knowledge come from? Just curious? Maybe you know more than me? Could be.
I love how people come on here and just say things like “that guy has bad technique”, yet never say specifically what it is?! All of these “experts” with their takes on QB play and any other positions! Ha ha! You guys can pretend to know or think you know whatever it is that you want, I don’t really care at this point. Have any of you actually coached or played? Probably not. So what better way to shoot someone down, on the internet, than to just insult them? Great work. If you ever wanna talk some real football, just let me know? My opinions are just that, opinions. Yes, I have an experienced background but the opinions are still like anyone else’s… open to interpretation and may or may not happen.
Here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to just support the program! I’m not worried anymore about what the program is doing or even who is leading it. It’s not worth it. I’m not a bad person. I’m not an arrogant person. I try to share knowledge and if you would like to share or have questions, I’m more than willing to share. But don’t be an ass.
Go Beavs!
You’re not DC at a HS are you? ‘Kill’em!’ Mean anything to you?
Gosh, maybe you should call Coach Smith and offer your offensive genius to him. I’m certain he would listen to you. First game out of the gates and they put up 31 on tOSU on the road and you’re complaining about the offense? UnBeaverable.
28 points from big plays shows talent, not a competent scheme. To be fair, it shows talent and some competence on the Oline. So there’s that. But there were a lot of head-scratching formations followed by a lot of head-scratching wtfs in that game.
I’m open to the argument we didn’t want to show any future opponents anything but base plays and maybe give them all tape on some really weird stuff we’ll never ever see again. It sounds like a waste of time, but it’s more hopeful than seeing some of those sets again.
I had less faith in Lindgren than any of the coaches given his resume. That didn’t really change with this game. He was just surpassed by Burns. Of course, if the secondary plays their Miss America D for a couple more games, then it’s Tibesar, not Burns.
Wait… the FG was from an INT… so 31 from big plays.
The positive for me was that the run game was almost always positive, and we stuck with it enough to break them down a couple times.
Agreed. I thought we went away from the quick developing plays that resulted in early success and instead put Blount and Colletto sitting back in the pocket waiting for a route to develop. By then, tOSU d-line was in the backfield. That said, the offense that we saw yesterday even with our back up QBs, is miles ahead of last year’s debacle. I wish we had some defense to go along with the offense.
So… 146 points allowed in the past two games. Is this a record?
I spent a few minutes looking around online, not good.
Delaware St gave up 105 points to PDX St in 1980.
But, they only gave up 30 points the week before.
Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns gave up 140 in consecutive games in 1997.
OSU might have a post WW2 record on our hands.
who cares what the Beavs did last year. It has absolutely no bearing on what they will do this year. You have to take the Ohio State game for what it was….an ass whooping but at least we looked competent offensively. This team doesn’t have tons of talent but their better coached and will give some teams trouble with their offensive scheme. The defense is horrible but I don’t think that’s a shock either. Not much depth and some of the talent is injured so it’s way too early to figure out how this team will look like come November.
We’ll have a better idea of where this team is after the next few weeks. Regardless, this rebuild is going to require time and patience, but I’m confident based on what I watched today from the offense that this team will compete but it will take time.
“they’re better….”
Welp! We’re obviously totally screwed this year, but hopefully better than 1-11.
#GoBeavs #KeepPunching
I missed the entire first half to go play soccer with friends instead. Don’t regret that decision. That being said, from what I saw in the second half, it does seem like the team will at least fight until the end in each game.
Anyway, just how much is Mike Riley involved with the program anymore? My parents bought tickets for a few games, and are encouraging me to join them, but if Riley is still involved with the program, I don’t want to take part.
They showed Simple Jack standing around on the sideline, no headphones or clipboard and not even standing near kids in pads. He was just there taking up space as usual. Not involved in actual coaching that I could tell.
As a consultant/analyst, he can’t do any coaching, only observe and meet/discuss with coaches. Looked like he was chillin away from the team with James Rodgers (also can’t coach), not even chewin any gum.
His dentures required that he switch to tic tacs
So basically doing the same as he did as HC.
I missed the entire second half. Fill me in?
Based on what I saw in the first half and the box score, I’m assuming the offense is competent and D is completely incompetent. About what I figured going into this season.
D was more just overwhelmed than incompetent imo. Ohio ST. offensively just didn’t mess up. No missed blocks or assignments, RB’s running downhill and WR’s who don’t drop the ball and make plays in space. Much better D than GA ever put out there
You can make an argument that the D just isn’t fully installed or understood by the personnel. But that D is not better than anything we’ve seen since about 2011 (last year’s CW is eligible, but they had already given up).
It was so egregious that I thought tOSU was running picks. So I went back and watched those plays again. They weren’t running picks. Our DBs were just that bad. We probably contested two or three passes all night. And those were the only plays you could tell their WRs were nice.
Enough talk about ohio state… When do we start the Southern Utah Prep Week Discussion?
Im expecting nothing short of a win.
I had predicted 63-3, so scoring 31 left me with some hope. First games are always nuts, but it seemed the team kept playing and they called a pretty good game on the offensive side.
The only sure thing coming out of this game is that we have a major problem on the D line.
Maybe Scott Frost can send us one or two of those? JS needs to recruit that position hard.
Feeling optimistic after giving up 77 is a strange thing.
The Dline was expected to be overwhelmed. As a result, the backers were going to be busy to the point of exhaustion early. That left our secondary, which tried not to be in frame when the camera was focused on the ball.
It’s hard to run a 2-4-5 D whe you’re thin at 2. It’s even harder to run a 2-4-? when you’re thin at 2. I don’t know what our secondary has been doing for however many months to prepare for playing actual games. But it would be nice to see them, let alone see them do something. I know we have players. I saw only a couple plays that showed anything.
Yeah at times it reminded me of vintage Banker vs hole defense where their best receiver is somehow always running free wide open every play. So far I’d say the corners have been a downgrade although they did tackle for the most part.
I’m ok with the game. It was Ohio St. after all and with a bit better execution here or there, they could have laid 40 points plus on them. The challenge for Smith and his staff (and probably where he either succeeds or fails), will be the ability to recruit and develop speed on defense. Many times it looked the defense was running in quicksand. This is going to be a long haul, but hey we could be Kansas, they just lost to Nicholls to start their season!
I just glanced at oregon’s schedule. Dear lord they have am easy road. All 3 non con games are at home. They don’t hit the road till game 5 and it’s just down to Cal. Then the next road game is October to WSU, followed by a trip to Tuscon and the 4th amd final road game is to Utah.
8 home and 4 road games, and the only semi difficult road games are WSU or Utah maybe.
And they skip USC.
They have a shot to go undefeated, but the only games that would prove anything are home games vs UW or Stanford. If they can’t make the CFB playoffs with that schedule, Cristoball and crew are frauds.
If they do make the playoffs with that schedule they’ll get boat-raced in the first round.
I think they’ll go 9-3. Washington is a for sure loss; Oregon’s receivers vs. the Dawg’s secondary is a bad matchup.

This article from a while back.
Link to JS post game presser. Not much new.
Near the end he says of Luton, “concussion protocal, day-to-day, week-to-week”
BTW, doesn’t he look more comfortable as HC than previously?
http://ohiostatebuckeyes.com/oregon-state-head-coach-jonathan-smith-press-conference/
Those not impressed at all about the offense: realize we only 31 points or more twice last year:
32 against Portland state and 33 against Colorado
Too lazy too look it up be we probably also had 4 explosive plays and I can’t imagine we had more then 12 all of last season.
On d: tough when you have no depth to start with and you lose 3 (2 to injury and 1 transfer) of your best players in camp. And we obviously don’t have the personnel for the scheme.
Going to be a long year yes, but we’ll have a chance to sneak up on some teams.
Felt like we left about 7 pts on the field Saturday as well.
In the would/coulda/shoulda category, the missed field goal in the 1st half should have been an easy chip shot but a 3rd down sack pushed us back several yards and made it a 40+ yard attempt.
Then after the 2nd half double fumble recovery, 1st and goal from the 7 only turned into a field goal. There was a blown PI call in that series as well. Really should have capitalized and gone for it on 4th down. Nothing to lose at that point in the game.
But, alas, instead of 38, we still scored 31 using our 3rd string QB for a half.
Probably a good idea to help with choukair’s confidence after missing that first one. Could pay dividends down the road.
Yeah, the 3 extra points would have been pretty insignificant at that point. More just pointing out that pts were left on the field in addition to the 31 scored. 38 would have turned more heads than 31, and those who watched the game could see how 38 wasn’t unreasonable given the way things played out.
What’s done is done, and I have a little faith now that this team will be able to score at a better clip this year than last. Unless we’re down to our 3rd string QB already….
Has anybody heard the status of Blount or Luton for this weekend?
I might have been hallucinating, but I thought I heard a stat where the Beavs crossed midfield 8 out of 12 times they had the ball? Not sure if that was for the entire game or a stat at one point? I was not able to watch the entire game, listed to some on the radio.
“Has anybody heard the status of Blount or Luton for this weekend?”
During the 2nd half on the radio broadcast they said Blount was fine and Luton was in concussion protocol
Before we get caught up in S.Utah speculation, here’s an exchange found on Big Jim Wilson’s twitter:

not much new here
What would be awesome to hear:
“We got our asses kicked like everyone knew we would. Amazed we scored 31. If I were Ohio State I’d be nervous as fuck about my defense. C ya!”
In out boom

Slick Willy Taggert laying an egg with his debut with FSU tonight. Too bad he did not stay with the toilet seats.
Haaaaaaahaaaaaaaaa fuck that guy. That douche is the biggest imposter since Gary fucking Anderpants. I also wish he would have stayed at hole and ran them in to the dirt.
Here’s the link to radio for FSU vs Hokies……..those who complain about Parker should listen and hear what a clueless “homer” and a dufus sidekick sound like.

At least Slick Willie can recruit. What the hell did we get with Anderpants besides a completely cratered program?
He can recruit, so Florida State will be the new Tennessee. Top 10 recruiting classes and a 6-7 win team. I was really looking forward to hole being that team.
Me too, but I know I’d take it right now.
Mediocre is as mediocre does.
We got equal or better talent at every position except QB.
What was your point?
In the spirit of Jack, who gives a Fuck?
By “spirit”, I assume you’re referring to the large alcoholic beverage I imagine he drinks to achieve the remarkable level of incoherence exhibited in his chain-ranting.

I think you might finally get it.
Why do I care about Florida playing against whomever they’re playing against on a Monday night? I got my fill of crap football just flipping channels on Saturday. And now I have to steel myself against 10 more games of OSU football against some other pathetic team… some augmented by rankings, but lacking proficiency all the same.
Well now onto Southern Utah.
This is a must win game. The defense is swiss cheese and the offense has shown it can move the ball.
Blount should likely be the starter for now. Offensive coaches showed they could scheme relatively well. Played to the players strengths. Need to clean up the snaps. For the most part I saw guys in position on defense to make plays, they were just outclassed athletically.
Jefferson showed he belonged on the field with the 1s. Nice complement to Pierce. Looks like Bradford will be the go to WR.
Need to show a lot of dominance this Sat. Run up the score when possible due to the defense. 50 pt minimum to give some flicker of hope.
There’s no current injured players who can come in and save the defense. It’s just going to have to get lucky this year. No need to rush guys back when you can save them for the back half of the year when they’ll be needed to fill in for newly injured players.
The schedule sets up a conundrum; the most difficult games (other than tOSU) are at the end of the season. It might be tempting to err on the side of rushing injured guys back in order to win the more winnable games over the next few weeks. However, the physical condition of the majority of the injured will take that kind of thinking out of the hands of the coaching staff. And, yes, they’ll be needed later to fill in for newly injured players.
The four game redshirt rule is where I’ll be watching for strategy with respect to the “probably winnable” vs “unlikely winnable” games.
As for, “…no current injured players who can come in and save the defense. It’s just going to have to get lucky this year.”
I think there are a couple DB’s who can come back and, not “save” the defense, but help it get better…I guess their return could be considered “lucky”. As someone else said, this is where the coaches can earn their money. I think they will help the D get, not “lucky”, but better.
I certainly agree about Jefferson; would like to see AP get 100-120 yds before mid 3rd qtr and Jefferson plenty of work for the rest of the game.
Jefferson looks nice. He’ll only get stronger and faster next year.
Even Baylor and Rodgers were fighting for positive yardage. There’s certainly more of a commitment to the run than I’ve seen in 15 years. And it shows in effort and attitude, even in a blowout. Or maybe it’s more important that it shows even then.
OT: Gary Anderpants last insult to me. The salt in the wound. Fresno State will be visiting Minneapolis this weekend led by our old friend Marcus McMaryion.
https://gobulldogs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5319
Just wondering why no one has mentioned the 79-13 beating they placed on Idaho. MM 19/26 for 207 yds.
Because a well coached Fresno team beat Idaho…what did people think would happen? We were in a similar boat, just on the otherside.
I’m still hosting my parents until Thursday, so if the mods want to put up a new thread please do.
PS. Nailed Slick Willie. https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1037033297673474048
Mario is going to blow even worse, IMO.
Been hoping to hear some news on Keyshawn Johnson Jr one way or the other this week, but so far nothing.
School started at Arizona on August 20th, and he still isn’t on their football roster. I’m not sure what this all means since he is technically enrolled at UofA and is listed in their student directory. Can a player still be eligible for transfer if they haven’t actually joined a team?
One theory (ok, my theory) is that he is still on the market. With Oregon State starting school on September 20th, this still gives him time to enroll at OSU and a handful of other schools on the 4 quarter system. It would make sense, given his connections to the coaching staff (Riley/Bray/Rodgers/VanDeReit) as well as Avery Johnson and his high school teammate Tristan Gebbia, that he could be considering Oregon State.
He also is a guy who comes with a little baggage, getting pulled out of Nebraska by his dad last year after being caught with weed in his dorm room, and he seems to fit the mold of a “high ego, high output”
4* WR HS recruit who performed well in the Nebraska Spring game, but hasn’t played any games yet in college.
What I’d like to know, if he’s available, do fans think he would even be a guy worth taking a risk on? Do you take a chance on a guy based on talent alone and ignore any character issues, or do we still with our current formula and move forward.
I saw Angry tweeting over the weekend about OSU recruiting too many filler type players and not enough “game changes”. Does Keyshawn Jr represent a game changer worth taking on?
Of course, this could all be moot if Keyshawn is added to the UA roster today, but I’d still like to hear your comments.
Not worth the risk with a new staff and “culture.” Last thing JS needs is a head case.
