  1. How much you want to bet the Oklahoma State QB is going to be touted as some dynamic QB superstar by the time this game is over (and then will fall back down to earth hard later in the year)

I can see it on the broadcast already (puke)

  2. I still dont understand why our db’s dont look for the ball. That pi would have been a pick if Morris just looks for the ball.

  3. You can tell the D is MUCH more athletic than last year and has actually made some nice plays this evening so far. Just can’t get off the field on 3rd down due to some mistakes and blown assignments. I think we finally have the talent to possibly have a respectable D. Time will tell.

  4. These FS1 commentators are TERRIBLE.

Do we have another badass punter? I feel conflicted that our best player is often our punter lol

  5. 3rd down, QB stares down his target, but our DB is like 15 yards back for some reason so they complete it. What else is new.

  6. Defense just collapsed on that drive. Gave up massive yards on several plays, no stops at all.

    2018 Beavers defense showed up.

  7. get Luton the f…… out of there. Please, he has nothing to offer as a leader, put Gebbia in NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
    !

  8. either the play calling is shit or Luton is what was expected. Give him one more drive and if we don’t score then pull him. Bad experiment.

  9. It’s like we have 11 Europeans who have never seen an American football game before playing on defense. We just gave them jerseys and said have at it.

  10. We are a good team for one series! Lol… I love how our offensive play calling is working… score a touchdown? Don’t use anything from that drive for the rest of the game… we may be worse than we were last season

  11. So does Luton have time and just can’t connect, is he putting the ball where it needs to be and the receivers can’t finish, what’s the story here?

If he can’t put together a respectable 2 minute drill he needs to sit the second half.

      • At the game. Ok st Wallace is a legit wr. Explosive when he touches the ball.

I feel like Gebbia should get a series or two just to see what he’s got. Luton isn’t playing bad, the defense hasn’t stopped anything. It’s pretty clear it’s a talent issue. Ok st isn’t out scheming, it’s out executing.

  12. On pace to give up 62.,..not enough game balls to go around on Okie state offense..,wonder how that new Beaver D attitude is holding up?

  13. We definitely failed in defense recruiting the last few years. We’re likely going exceed our average yds allowed from last year.

  14. The only consolation I have has nothing to do with this game, it’s the fact that Gary Underpants coug’ed it against Wake Forest tonight. I do not want that dude to have any kind of success going forward.

  15. Tibesar appears to be in over his head. Defense is not improved from last year. At all.

My prediction of a win looking as bad as the defense.

    • My prediction is money so far:

“How much you want to bet the Oklahoma State QB is going to be touted as some dynamic QB superstar by the time this game is over (and then will fall back down to earth hard later in the year)”

      …Yay.

  16. If you can’t recruit, coach or manage to put a defense on the field that provides one iota of resistance to your opponent then perhaps you should find a different line of work.

I’m officially on the fire Tibesar bandwagon. This is fucking pathetic. Gonna be a loooooong season again and I’m not subjecting myself to the aggravation. My optimism lasted all of one quarter.

Fuck this. Whiskey out until hoops season. I have better things to do with my time.

  17. Hmm…the offense works best when throwing to your best player. The three TD drives hodgins has played a mayor role. I’m call for the madden offense 22 catches 250 yards

  18. So last 5 to 10 runs have been little to no gain. They have been daring Luton to beat them beyond the short routes. Now that the last two drives they have been airing it out some, finally seeing some success.

  19. Angry claims the best version of Luton is the one that appears when the pressure is off and the game is out of hand.

Get ready for the gunslinger, count on 2 ints for the 2nd half, meanwhile they still lose by 21, Gebbia gets no reps and Jefferson doesn’t get much work.

    • Luton? We talking about Luton? Have you not seen our defense. Tom Brady could be our QB and it wouldn’t make a difference if we give up 700 yards.

  20. Looks like another bottom 10 defense.
Remarkable they can’t improve at all despite all the transfers.
Not sure the solution on D since there is zero effort or passion. Seems like nobody wants to make a play and instead they are looking for the guy next to them to make it.

  21. Does Luton ever pump fake? He get’s so many batted passes. It’s like he doesn’t even see defenders if they’re within 3 yds of him.

    • This is how:

      Okie state starting ends:

Tonight’s matchup will be interesting. Okie states starting defensive line is as follows:

      DE: 6-4 242# RSo
      6-5 245# RSr
      6-3 227# Fr
      DE: 6-4 265# RFr
      6-4 280# RJr
      6-0 300# Fr

  22. I moved to Nashville 5 years ago and my ten year old son hangs out with a rough crowd and he has fallen victim to peer pressure and is an Alabama fan?? Being a good Dad I’m talking him his first Bama game tomorrow in Atlanta. Looking forward seeing some real defense

  23. What’s funny is that everyone was saying the Beavs defense has to be better this year because it couldn’t be worse than last year…

    • Yeah and unfortunately UConn played Wagner and gave up less than 200 yards, so the Beavs are headed towards the worst fucking defense this season!

  24. Looking at Smith’s staff, was Tibesar the only real reach as a hire? I can’t think of any other coaches on the staff that weren’t already experienced/proven at their position. It’s time to call that hire a failure and make a real move.

  25. Such a disappointing home opener. Unbelievable that we never stopped but one third down and long situation in at least ten tries, ok, make it twice. Horrible coaching from Smith and Tibs. Smith needs to involve himself in both offense and defense play calling. What a difference in their mobile qb running all over the field, and Luton sliding to the ground several yards in front of any potential tackler. Unfair to put Gebbia in with 3 minutes to play, but we can at least see the much greater potential he offers us. Never should have started Luton, we were beaten before the game even started . Tibs appears to be a very poor defensive coach as evidenced by our boys inability to make any turnovers or any big play in the entire game. Please do away with that embarrassingly pathetic chain saw crap..

    • And, Luton tries to rifle in every single ball. His mechanics look poor as he seems to try to use his upper body to rip every throw.

Gebbia seems to throw a nicer ball with more touch. Luton doesn’t have a deep ball as the media claims him to have.

Defense – no comment. Tibesar should omit his time here from his resume for his next job.

  26. Gebbia looks good. He looks so much smoother than Luton. We wouldn’t have won this game with Gebbia but it would be closer. Who knows, if the offense didn’t have the 3 and outs, maybe the defense doesn’t get as tired.

    • You’re joking right? Anyone focused on QB play is blind to the game itself. We have 2 QB’s we can win with and 1 defense we can’t.

    • Ya that first off target throw into double coverage was great.

Offense could’ve been better but to bitch at anything aside from defense is just dumb.

  27. Nice drive by Gebbia

How the fuck do we score 36 and get our ass kicked?

    Shitcan Yoda ET Tibesar immediately

Bring in Richard Siegler and DeLawrence Grant to show how some real hardcore motherfuckers get it done

  28. Smith walks out to shake Gundgy’s hand and asks if he wanted to trade defensive coordinators. Gundgy says hell no son I don’t want to be the losing OSU.

  29. I was thinking about going to the Hawaii-OSU game.

In addition to getting shallacked on the football field, I would probably get my ass beat too.

    Luck o da beavs

  30. I see an offense that has some very talented players and a defense that is clueless and gives up. Smith is going to have to step up and do something to fix it soon as this can’t be a healthy dynamic long term.

  31. Enough about Luton. Might want to talk about 3rd and conversion. I can’t, as I’m more geeked out than Lewis Black discussing politics.

  32. Oregon St’s football problem is twofold. When you hire a young unproven head coach on the cheap said head coach needs to have the funds to surround himself with proven assistants to help with the learning curve. Head coach won’t be successful with assistants that have minimal to no experience at their positions.

Tibesar was never a DC before Smith hired him. This was/is a failed experiment that should’ve been foreseen.

But it’s the Oregon St way.

With the exception of baseball we have a culture problem that accepts trying and mediocrity. As long as you tried and did your best that’s acceptable. Which is a poor way to prepare anyone in college for the real world. Personally, I blame Ed Ray and his hands off approach. I also fear for the baseball program keeping the momentum. I was ok with the Canham hire but we’ve already seen firsthand how “keeping it in the family” has worked out.

  33. I occasionally saw the d line get a push but obviously they were either out of position or getting man handled for large parts of the game. Does anyone know where you can see personal D stats? Like to see who might have been somewhat active up front.

  34. After giving it some thought I think there are some hopeful signs:

    1. OkSt o-line had 4 multi-year starters and they played like it. So that may give a bit more balance to explain why the d-line got pushed so much.

    2. Even though this was another in a long line of all-world debuts for a freshman starter, he may be the most elusive QB Beavs will face until Arizona.

    3. Luton looked fine until he disappeared during 3 key drives that put the game out of reach.

    4. No turnovers

    5. 1 sack given up by the offense is an improvement

    6. Not many self-inflicted losses due to poor snaps, not as many penalties like false starts, holding as prior years

    7. Defense may need more than one game against an elite offense to get some trust and confidence

    8. Hodgins is a beast

    9. Gebbia has legit skills is established

    10. Peirce is going to be a big contributor this season

    11. A lot of GAs guys are being passed on the depth chart, he wasn’t a great recruiter, Togai should probably be pushed by Musgrave right now as the pass catching TE

    12. OK St has elite skill players and maybe it was a challenge to settle all of the new faces into the defense against that offense.

Pessimistically though, it could be a repeat of the same script we’ve seen for about 6 years. No talent D and some coach speak to keep us interested. The offense looks to be improved, but won’t be able to tackle for the D…

    • Several good points there, ohio.
1, 7, 12) all are reasons Tibs job is secure……for now. I’m a fan of BIG JIM and believe him when he says the Beavs will face very few, if any, offenses like this for the balance of the season.

      6) decent and can be improved upon, false starts were often triggered by the Center’s snap; one reason I’ve felt continuity between C and QB is important and a reason to name each early in camp. Seems both C’s played off and on last night, thats got to change. (but the snaps DID seem reliable last night, just not perfectly timed).

3)Luton……….why can’t an experienced 6’7″ guy avoid batted down passes? I think angry has it right in saying gunslingers usually think they can throw through anyone.

Anybody else glad to see CHAMP on the field? Kid is gonna be fun to follow.

    • I agree that we might have to wait til the Stanford game to completely condemn tibesar. That was a top ten offense they faced on the first game of the year. Hawaii is also a powerful offense and then cal poly so I think we’ll know for sure by how they play Stanford. His seat should definitely be hot.

The batted balls is partly on the o line letting the d get there hands up and getting free runs on the qb. Gebbia had one also on his short drive. It’s almost like they knew he was going to 3 step drop and didn’t rush and waited to bat the ball down.

  35. Needed Jalen Moore last night, missing Bradford hurt as well. How many times is our 6’7″ qb going to get swatted at the line this year? 3-4 D is still a bad scheme as we give up 50+pts and 500 yards again.

    • Yeah I’ve never been a fan of the 3-4. So many huge gaps and LBs making tackles 15 yards downfield. Even the great NFL D’s like the Ravens who ran a 3-4 had LBs making tackles way too far downfield. It’s just a crappy D. What makes it worse for us is we don’t have the personnel for it.

    • I thought a couple of the batted balls were on the O-line for not keeping the opponents hands down, but I’m not sure Luton is adept enough to understand slot angles either.

  36. I was reading some on a Okie st football blog.

“…we give up a big pass play, and hardly ever get to the QB..”

“Defense is a letdown. No improvement in my eyes…”

“Defense just can’t get off the field”

“We have to keep scoring…this D won’t hold”

    “The defense is just…not good”

“Offense is bailing us out. This D is a dumpster fire.”

    “Our safeties…can’t cover air”

    OSU sounds strangely like…OSU!!!

    • This^^^^^^^^^
The Beav offense isn’t bad, about one solid drive from being equal to Oklahoma State’s — the defense is just THAT bad.

  37. If Ok State wouldnt have traveled well, there would have only been about 30% of the seats filled last night. Instead is was around 40%(maybe?)

When you have a potential program changing home game to start the season. as an AD, you need to fill those seats. I dont care how you do it. Give tickets away. Just get buts in the seats. Crowd was so weak. And so many of our fans are accustomed to losing, they dont even get engaged with the game. OK State fans were probably confused if they were in the right town in the hours before game day. Corvallis was DEAD yesterday.

Yes, it was a late weekday start before Labor Day weekend. But it’s easy to predict nobody will show up given the circumstances when you’re charging regular price. Make the tickets cheaper. Get a crowd in there. It’s just sad how empty that place was.
And it was a PERFECT night for watching a football game. T-shirt weather, no clouds to be seen.

Oh, and learn to stop a team on 3rd down once in awhile.

    • I was embarassed for the university when the cameras were scanning the seats. I think they were trying to give away free tickets. They did something with youth football programs in the Portland Metro area where it looked like all kids got in free, but the parents/coaches had to pay. But again, it’s Labor Day weekend, it’s a hard sell.

      • That’s a pretty doomed idea from the get go, when the game kicks off at 7:40.
Make it attractive for people who live closer. I was fortunate enough to get free babysitting yesterday, so I was able stay out later than i normally would. We didnt get back to Portland till just around 2 AM. Kids tickets arent going to help much.

Nobody wants to keep their kids out that late, especially the last week of Summer when you’re needing your kids to ratchet back their bed time for early mornings school mornings.

Check this view out, from 9:00 left in the 4th.

  38. I’m not sure why so many Beaver fans are waving the white flag on the season on social media.

Ok State beat No. 6 Texas and lost by 1 point to Oklahoma last year with essentially the same offense (they put up 47 points). I thought that the Pokes would put up 60 and have 700 yards of offense with our safeties out last night, and I wouldn’t have lost any sleep.

I still think that the Beavs can get to three wins (Poly, Zona, UCLA). Four if they beat Hawaii. They can move the ball and they don’t turn it over; they do need to utilize their tight ends more to avoid three and outs. The front seven can get the defense to third down, and with Jalen Moore back they’ll have more leadership in the secondary.

    • I think it is a couple of things. We are in the 5th year of a rebuild. Getting crushed in the first game of the year for the third? year in a row.

We will know more after two more games.

Andersen left our defense in shambles which I find odd given he is a defensive coach.

    • “…fans are waving the white flag on the season on social media.”
I think social media fans are more social than fans. Too soon to wave white flags for the Beavs.

Now, if you are a fan of the pretty boys in eugene, an injury or poor performance by their QB today WOULD be cause for white flag waving!

  39. Beavs have a mental problem where they think hanging around in a game for a few quarters is good enough. They’ve had this forever. It’s something institutional and systemic. I could see the defenders lacking desire and instead looking around for someone else to make a play. It’s very disturbing because it’s ingrained and therefore harder to fix than talent problems.

  40. Some are asking about how Luton’s passes kept getting knocked down.

    Okie state starting ends:

Tonight’s matchup will be interesting. Okie states starting defensive line is as follows:

    DE: 6-4 242# RSo
    6-5 245# RSr
    6-3 227# Fr
    DE: 6-4 265# RFr
    6-4 280# RJr
    6-0 300# Fr

  41. The lack of fire on D is another reason to start Gebbia if you think about it. Luton = zero moxie and zero fire. Gebbia is fiery. He might demand more from the D and get on them. If the next few games play out the same gotta make the switch and hope an intense leader at QB lights a fire under the D. Goal should be to break Gebbia in with some time each of the next two games then take over for Pac play and light a fire under the guys.

  42. Something I noticed with Gebbia, though, is he was only taking 3 step drops. He’s going to get sacked/fumble a lot doing that given our line is so-so. Wonder what’s up with that. I bet the media doesn’t ask.

    • Gebbia’s drop and release reminded me of a slightly taller Jonathan Smith. Smith had a quick release, but did get a number of batted balls.

  43. This year’s team looks to be like that 2016(?) quack team with Brady Hoke but with a slightly worse offense. Let’s hope Okie State really is THAT GOOD and things aren’t as bad as they seem (not holding my breath)

  44. So the elevator on the west side of Reser for the press box quit last night? And Ok State booth coaches were actually caught in it and missed the beginning of the 2nd half? Yet they still went on to easily score on their first drive? And now we’re asking people to donate $100 each to cover elevator repair costs? And Scott Barnes earns more than 10 other Pac12 athletic directors?

    https://twitter.com/Y_Bernard26/status/1167664142951559168?s=19

  45. Two things about the O:
-didn’t it seem like too many rushes went to the right side than to the more experienced left? Anybody got stats on that?
-was the play calling a little too pass heavy?
Those three and outs in the 2nd qtr obviously marred a relatively decent performance by the O.

    • A couple of the longer runs did go right side with the RB making cuts back to the middle. They also stuffed a few off that side too. I dont remember a run to the left getting stuffed. We gained yards pretty much every time on that side. Seemed to be 60/40 pass but it was probably more.

  46. I watched Luton closely last night and he is below average at best. That Oklahoma St. defense was not good. There were so many plays that could have been made with a good QB. Luton has passes knocked down because he telegraphs and locks on to 1 receiver. He had open receivers but would not look at his 2nd or 3rd option.
Defensively I think it is scheme as much as personel. I also do not understand why we keep running our 300 lb. lineman on and off the field every other play to give them rest. The running 30 yds.wears them out more than if they stayed on the field and caught their breath. Over and over last night our defense wasn’t even set when Okie st. started the play.

  47. Watching BSU vs FSU. Amazing how similar the first half of this game was to the Beav game. FSU all over BSU led 31-13, lots of big plays given up by the BSU defense. Yet in the second half BSU kept grinding making stops and now lead FSU 36-31 late in the 4th quarter. BSU defense given up 450 yards already, but most of that in the first quarter of the game.
