  1. So what’s this about the D almost costing us the game? Our QB and coach almost did. At least one of those factors is out next week.

He’s mad because I think Gebbia has ability. He thinks bashing Gebbia hurts me, and that makes him feel a little better about himself.

        • Mostly wrong but some truths in there. This is standard Angry when he’s defensive. I just love poking at him. I have to give it to him, even when he’s wrong, he won’t change his view and call a spade a spade. But I’ll just do like he did with Luton and bash Gebbia because I am not wrong, he’s proven himself to be a subpar QB. He’s not meeting the “Angry Standard” which for Luton was 250 ypg, 3 to 1 touchdown ratio, and 65% completion percentage. Well Angry what do think? Sound about right?

          • Yes that does play into it, but I don’t think it’s as much as a drop off as you are suggesting. Deeper receiver core this year minus a dominant target. Deeper more athletic line, not as skilled. I guess what I am talking about is the consistent missing of throws to wide open receivers. You wouldn’t give Luton a pass on that I guarantee you.

          • I won’t give Gebbia a pass on it, either, if it continues. He has to play a full game like he plays second halfs, starting next game if he’s healthy enough.

          • He has had 5 starts, I just don’t know how long you wait. I do see the potential sometimes. I am not seeing the confidence or moxey that you see. I see happy feet and a deer with the headlights look. If he can break out of that, perhaps he could be good. Mental issues are arguably the hardest to break. Head to Head numbers against Luton of 2018 and his first 5 starts aren’t even close. And Luton wasn’t great. Gebbia ranks 94th in QBR this year.

          • 5 starts and almost 2 Civil War wins.
I see something there, but I also see problems. It’s like Matt Moore in 2006. He was shit until game 3 or so vs WSU. Gebbia is taking even longer, but Moore did start the year prior, so it’s not a great comparison. But it reminds me of that where if something clicks he’ll start to dominate games. Seems mental. My guess is he got crushed in camp b/c he has the happy feet. I’m fine moving on from him if Nolan is better. I like Nolan. My guess is Gebbia is top 20 in the second half of games, so he just has to come out playing like that.

Regarding Luton – never liked him/he was part of the reason McMaryion got the shaft.

          • Lol, McMaryion…. he went on to start at another school. NFL never called. Luton started in NFL his rookie year. Yes, circumstance and bad team led to him starting as a rookie, but no team called McMaryion.

Regarding Gebbia: people seem to want to come at me about him. I think he’s a good second half player at this point. He plays the second half like I expected him to play entire games. If he can figure that out he will start putting up massive numbers. But even so, his numbers were once again good, and he had two key rushes as well. I’m fine going to Nolan if he’s better. I’m not tied to Gebbia and did like Nolan as a recruit. At this point it’s process the data as it comes in, and adjust if needed. I’ve seen enough that I’d be okay with a change, but I’ve also seen enough the other way that I’d be okay sticking with Gebbia if he can go.

    • Totally agree. I think Gebbia played well under pressure tonight. He made some bad plays but also completed big passes before getting hit. Then he led us down to the goal line under 2 mins.

@BlackBandits IMO he shouldn’t of been in the game to get hurt. As smith should of benched him long ago. Terrible injury it reminds of James Rodgers, defensive player causing the injury almost purposely. The way he pulled on his leg wasn’t right.

  3. Always knew Mario Cristobal was a bad coach. He’s basically just coasting on talent alone at this point.

What a win for Smith. He’s made some very bad decisions but that decision to do the quarterback sneak with Nolan was one of his best ones.

Here’s hoping Gebbia isn’t injured too badly.

    • Even after the first quarter against Washington they made big adjustments. It seems the game plan is let the other team score the first few drives and then we will come up with a Good scheme. They came up with some big plays. Wright is a ball hawk. Would have had a second pick I think at the end if not for colliding with a team mate.

How many times during the broadcast did Gilmore say “everyone would agree that Oregon has superior talent”? It’s a fucking ESPN/Phil Knight/Disney cabal! Fuck them all! Tonight is for Beaver!

    • I think mckalk just set the record for upvotes. We may disagree about coaches, their calls, players, their performance, but there’s unanimity on this.

  5. 14

I’m not a big fan of the main guy at the GT, but he’s got this tweet right:
“If the officials could correctly spot a ball, no reason to think the Beavers aren’t 3-1 and in first place in the North. Oh and have the tiebreaker with both Oregon and UW.”

    • I”ve been ripping on the ESPN announcers, but even Gilmore made that comment also about the Washington spots. What a travesty. Almost the same thing tonight. Half of Gebbia’s body was in the endzone, did the refs think he was holding the ball in his crotch?

  6. Compared to the Washington game when the Beavs had no timeouts and less time, gebbia didn’t have to throw every down at the end to try and score. That was huge. Also getting two first downs consecutively got him going. I’m glad they didn’t score on second and goal. Linda come just pointed out the missed off sides by the refs by oregon lineman.

    Some takeaways from this game/season:

    * Beavs beat the Ducks, nah nah nah nah nah nah! lol
*Yes there have definitely been some questionable calls so far!
    *Gebbia is not very good!
    * J2 is unbelievable!
    *Offensive line is improving
*Defense is improving but needs to focus on tackling the BC rather than stripping the ball
*Excited to see Nolan @ QB
*Schedule looks good, especially with Harrison and Lowe coming in?!

    Overall, we’ll see what happens?!

    Go Beavs!

  8. Anyone know what the big fucking drama was with Sewell last week with the cart and the “out for the season” crap. He looked fine tonight. With all the money behind college football, the being able to hide injury bullshit needs to go. Just like when they wouldn’t identify the penalty player by number for years.

  9. So Ducks have to lose 1 more game, Washington has to lose 3 of 4 (they looked bad, and it’s their 4 toughest games), and Beavs have to win remaining 2. Then we win the North.

    • I will be stoked if your prediction comes true. Although I don’t think this is how you imagined us getting there! Regardless it would be a great way to cap off this shit year.

    • I was getting tired of hearing how much an ‘underdog’ OSU was to the far supperior talent and coaching of the ducks/sarc. Gilmore was certainly better than Fleming who was adamant about giving the ducks the ball on that out of bonds ‘fumble’when the ball was stripped from Jefferson. At least with the mask rules, I didn’t have to watch the guy with the ‘Wild Bill Hicock’ mustache on the duck sidelines too much!

  10. Funny, I re-watched the Cal game and thought the Beavs looked better then I thought when watching it live. The Washington game the Refs screwed us out of the win. To bad, but this team should be 3-1 right now and trending up.

  11. It was a long time ago and Jefferson got some revenge but second year in a row beavs had a chance to win at the end of the game against the quacks. It’s great to pull out the win this time. Amazing that smith has had the team in position to be competitive with the tops of the conference so soon.

Our gal Lindsay puts down the pastries long enough to tweet:
“It’s not just about what’s happening right now: what Jonathan Smith has done with @BeaverFootball
in such a short period of time is SO impressive. Gary Andersen left them in horrible shape, and it feels like a lifetime ago. So much respect for Smith.”

It’s tough because that is true ^ yet he sabotages himself and the team. People ignore that part. I’m 55/45 on him. Want to be uber bullish because he’s an alum and loves OSU, and because I think he does know what it takes to win at OSU (since he lived it), but at the same time I can’t help but be bearish on his in-game management.

        • Yeah I just hope overtime he gets better with it but idk. I will say he’s better than Riley at it but that isn’t saying much. He’s got to improve it or we will be the same good team that underachieves.

          • He’s better than Riley, I think? Who knows. We’re all biased tonight due to the win.
I think he has way more upside than Riley, that’s for sure, and he might have more downside. If he figured out risk I’d be super bullish on him (like I was at the start)…it’s the kryptonite that will be his downfall.

I don’t know the timeline on a guy to learn how to manage risk because I’ve never seen the problem before. Usually you don’t become a coach if you don’t know how to do basics like that.

          • Idk Angry. I’ve seen many coaches that are notorious for bad game management. Andy Reid in Philly and early in KC comes to mind. He screwed up a lot of games but seemed to have corrected that now. That being said it was more clock management than just straight inept risks. I hopeful but I hope he’s not using some stupid algorithm or something to make these calls. If that is the case currently it would explain some things lol

          • Someone suggested after last year’s WSU game that Smith was trying to condition his players by going for it on 4th down. I think there’s something to that, but you still have to consider field position, down, distance, time…if Smith can recognize he needs to be more strategic, he might be fine.

Maybe when he was OC at UW, Peterson kept him under wraps and there’s lessons there to yet be realized.

          • If smith teams are routinely getting delay of game penalties after taking time outs, like mr teams did, then he can take Riley’s well earned title as worst game manager

        • It’s easy to try and point out what is perceived as coaching errors. But forgetting to give credit where credit is due to the coaches. I don’t think we see 90% of the things coaches do or change during the game to talk to players or change calls. What we do see is a team improving and players enjoying playing and that reflects good coaching. He is also learning how to head coach in front of us. “Costing games” is just oversimplifying. You could saw Gebbia cost us both losses with his play. True? Maybe. But oversimplifying? Most definitely

    • 2

People forget about his fumble and I think it was on that same play he made a bad read on the screen set up. If he would have cut left, he could have run for another 30 yards. Who knows, could have been 17-17 and OT. I’m sure it feels great for him to get redemption.

Nice to hear from Lundeberg who, IMHO, got a raw deal at the GT, he tweets:
“Biggest takeaway from this game is offsides doesn’t apply if your recruiting ranking is high enough”

  13. Also has anyone mentioned how well one of our former coordinators is doing at BYU? I always liked Sitake and it appears he’s a damn good coach too.

    • 1
      1

Sitake was smart to get away from bat shit crazy Anderpants for sure. He was close to being let go after that 4-9 season but has upgraded the talent. Unfortunately, their schedule is like their in the Sun Belt this year. The Boise St. win was impressive though. They are much improved.

  14. I think this win will have a positive impact on recruiting and the beavers definitely trending in the right direction…

Wherever you are Fanno….i got two words for you….SUCK it!

    • Bradford has also been stepping up and holding onto the ball. Gebbia is putting the ball in better locations too. The chemistry was really starting to click. Can Nolan keep It going.

      • Agree with both of you! It was really nice to see K Taylor step up. Made some huge first down grabs. And Bradford looks good on the horizontal stretch plays but also made some clutch grabs too. Also, loved seeing Beason with a TD grab.

        Go Beavs!

  15. 10

Disagree with Angry on two points:

    – I like Smith’s agressiveness. You have to send a message to your team that you must win football games. You control your own destiny. Even Nicky Satan has resigned himself to the fact that offenses win games now and the defenses are only there to make a stop or two each half.

    – Gebbia is just an average QB. He has a noodle arm. Can’t drive the ball like Luton. Also, the points about Hodgins and the OL don’t really hold. Garretson and Coletto had Hodgins, Brandel, Lavaka, Pierce and Togai, and couldn’t move the ball at all. No matter what level you are playing, a 25:3 TD-INT shows good QB play. Gebbia is nowhere near that.

  16. So where is Jefferson going to end up in the list of OSU backs? Simonton, Jackson, Bernard, Rodgers…he’ll be gone after this season, I think he ends up in the top 5. Big play RB in an era with less D, but his vision, efficient movement, and speed appear to be under-appreciated by many non-OSU fans.

    • Man he’s #5 for me for sure right now… And spot on he’s super slept on. I think tonight’s game was big for that. People I know that are duck fans were like #6 is good and is gonna put the Beavs on the map.

      • I agree Bernard had gaudy numbers because he played 4 years but yeah they aren’t even on the same level. So yeah correction he’s #4 right now.

      • Bernard played soccer early in his life, and i thought that contributed to his running style, I thought he ran as if he controlling a ball as he ran, and so he never long-strided or high stepped. I think that helped him keep his feet, but it also slowed him down. Or maybe I’m wrong and he was just a short strider.

I put Jefferson ahead of Bernard. Jackson was a physical freak. Rodgers lateral movement was crazy, but he was a 4 speed RB in a 5 speed game. I remember a USC LB steroid freak catching him from behind. Still a favorite though. If he had another gear or two….he’d probably have another 1000 yards over his career.

Nall could have been up there higher if Riley had been more decisive about how to use him.

Jefferson is up there with Jackson and Rodgers IMO. If Jefferson hadn’t run the wrong way in the CW last year, he’d probably have two CW victories and be near legend status.

Simonton – Maybe its the time, and the big CW run, but I put him ahead of Bernard. Tough, but again, lacking an extra gear.

          • 1
            1

Yeah, for a college back, Nall was more physically special than Bernard. Give them each 4 years and good run blocking? Nall would out produce Bernard.

Nall is probably Jackson Lite, and it translate to NFL playing time and production.

          • 3
            1

Nall fumbled against Stanford and caused a loss. He’s out! Never rushed for 1000 either because he couldn’t stay on the field. I would put Jacquizz at number one. Best overall skill set despite his size. Amazing ball security, great receiver.

    • 2
      3

It’ll depend on where he is picked and how he does in the pros. Mostly because his time here was playing for bad teams and he hasn’t gotten the all conference recognition like the others.

I’d rank the RBs like this at this point,

      1. Rodgers
      2. Bernard
      3. Jackson
      4. Simonton
      5. Enyart

He could be top 5 but he’ll need to continue his great season. But Jefferson will have always special place in OSU history for his performance today.

        • I actually don’t think their NFL career is important when talking about where they fit as a college back. Just like a QB. If he’s a great college QB, why care what he does in the NFL, unless you also enjoy NFL or you like NFL more. I’m not saying that’s bad, but Kellen Moore was a great college QB. I don’t think Tom Brady was a great college QB, but his NFL record is obviously special.

      • 1
        1

It’s hard to put Bernard below 3. He was an absolute tank. I remember he had knee surgery in later November 2007, and returned to play that December in the Emerald Bowl to rush for almost 200 yards

He was also super clutch with that 2-point conversion against Mizzou in the Sun Bowl. Riley put a lot of trust in him to go win that game and he delivered.

          • 1
            1

Probably, but that’s not the point.

In terms of the legends who have played at OSU, Bernard is top three because of how many games from 2005-2007 he went out and won. I recall games where the Beavs couldn’t win unless Bernard ran the ball 35+ times in that game. Some of those victories came against teams where the offense had to chew the clock and keep the defense off the field. If the Beavs needed 4 yards, Bernard was almost automatic, as was Jackson.

By the end of his career at OSU, however, I can see Jermar being a top 3 all-time back at OSU, if not top 2. He is best when the defense really does not know what play is coming, and he gets into the second level. I think Smith and Co. can take better advantage if they don’t give him the ball when he is gassed from four straight runs in the hurry up offense.

          • JJ is the most compete back we have ever had as a Junior. Jackson was a beast but liked to dance behind the line (He’s the best back we have had obviously but he made technique mistakes), Quiz didn’t have the top end speed.

If JJ stays and improves his blocking he will be NFL ready as a rookie.

  17. So the last CW win was 2016. UO had won 8(!) straight prior, and in that time UO was ranked between #3 and # 19 in the nation.

Will it become a rubber match again? I think with Cristo and Smith, it could, based on recruiting cycles and coaching.

Smith cares about this more than Cristo, so even if Smith doesn’t have the stars, he’ll prep like hell.

    • Cristo used to face defeat often in past stops but now isn’t it worth noting that Smith knows how to keep punchin’ after a loss and Mario maybe never knew how??

    • I initially assumed UO had too much line talent, but people here were posting about how UO’s D line was not impressive and was giving up yards, and I began to gain hope.

If the calls were better (offsides), the game likely wouldn’t have been so close, and OSU would have more first downs and sustained drives.

  18. 12

Let’s give Eldridge some props on the sneaks going up against jordon scott. Also montibon coming in on short notice and not being noticed (which is a good thing). It was the Olines best performance also so big props to all the hogs.

My keys to the game review,

Things that need to go right,
    1. Jefferson has to get loose despite the Ducks stacking the box with no real deep threat from the Beavs WRs.
    Check. Check. Triple check.
    2. A WR or two will need to make a few plays out of nothing.
Push? Only one or two drops by the WR corp.
    3. Special teams will need to come through again. Long returns, punts pinning the Ducks deep, blocked kick, cause a fumble.
Push. The 13 yard punt didn’t end up hurting the team.
    4. Defense will need stop more than 50% on third downs. No missed tackles.
Check. 4-10 on third down defense but was not doing good early on. Tackling improved through the game.
    5. Rashed will need to make his presence known on defense. He hasn’t been put in a lot of positions to wreck havoc.
Miss but Hughes Murray picked up that production.
    6. Gebbia can’t make any mistakes. No turnovers. Needs to get the offense into convertible third downs.
Push. No turnovers. Only 2 three and out.
    7. DBs will need to make a legit pick. They will be picked on all day long as they are terrible at covering deep.
    Check. Got two.
    8. DLine needs to get home a lot. Hit the QB.
Check. Only one sack but held him in check rushing. Only 6 yards rushing by the QB. He ran for 80+ yards in the his first two games.
    9. Defense must be disciplined as Ducks use a lot of RPO and misdirection.
Miss in the first half. Check in the second half.
    10. Playcalling on both sides needs to be good. Can’t afford throwaway plays.
Miss in the first half, check in the second half.
    11. Ducks will probably go for it on 4th down all the time. Need to make majority of these stops.
Check. Only stop was on the last play of the game. Oregon never really got to a 4th down situation where they would have gone for it.

  20. 10

So another site im a part of has a big college-football thread every year. Its at around 600 pages now. The CW got lots of praise for being the best game played so far this season (being compelling). It jumped 10 pages in just the 4th quarter(100 posts per). Pretty cool how many people were watching from all over the county. 95% were rooting for the beavs. That national attention is going to be good for recruiting i suspect.

  21. I think we all share doubts about Gebbia, but today was a big step for him. He made good throws (he also had some bad decisions that could have proved costly), but what really stuck out to me were 2 plays:

    1) A deep completion early in the game where he got drilled by an Oregon linebacker, which could have rattled him later on;
    2) The 10-15 yard scramble he made late in the game to move the chains.

These are plays that a team leader needs to step up and make, because it gives the entire team a morale boost.

  22. 16

Big ass piece of pie for breakfast and rewatched the last drive. Clutch performance by the team and Gebbia.
My god that was a terrible performance by the refs! Half of Gebbia’s body was in the end zone and the offsides!!
Tons of texts from my Gopher friends…….everybody hates the Quacks.
It will always be the CIVIL WAR!
    Go Beav’s

    • I am not getting this goal line shit from the Zebras. Don’t they have a ref with sole responsibility? There was even an early Beav TD (Gebbia’s?) where they took more time than it should to get their fucking hands in the air when it wasn’t even close. Is this happening in other P-12 games?

        • I was thinking that. She wasn’t working the Husky game, right? I mean, are these idiots truly graded after their performances? Sounds more like they are protected. There was a lot more clear visual evidence of incompetence last night, but I’m not hopeful anything will change.

  23. I can’t help but see parallels between last night’s win and the Beavs “Glory at the Goal Line” win when Simonton won it in OT in 1998. Like Riley, Smith is in his second year, the game was in a window and compelling enough where it got a lot of national attention, Ducks were also ranked 15th (AP instead of Playoff Committee) then. Really hoping the game spurs similar growth with the program – but doesn’t have Smith jetting south for an NFL gig (as Riley did after the season).

  24. It’s concerning how much better Gebbia is in the second half than the first half. First half Geb only has a completion percentage of 52% and averages less than 7 YPA. Second half percentage is 69% with almost 8 YPA.

  25. A few thoughts.

    1) this is the first game this season where we out gained th other team. Great offensive performance.

    2) first game in who knows how long that we out gained the ducks in the ground, JJ is incredible.

    3) DLine is undersized but there conditioning is really good. They get creamed in the first half but in the second half they get way more.push and seem aggressive. I know a bunch of them lost weight in the off-season so I wonder if this was intentional? Ducks Oline looked absolutely gassed in the 4th.

    • Just like husky game, ducks had over a 100 rushing yards first quarter and then it went away. Not
Mentioned is the hit By Oladapo (sp) that caused their running back to miss the rest of the game. That was poyeresque! Also eliminated one old their backfield weapons that was hurting us.

    • I’m sure he’s off somewhere producing a set of excuses and unrelated jabs. He’ll be back soon enough. I was wondering that “suck” and “blow” are opposites. If “suck” means terrible, doesn’t “blow” mean great?

      • Yeah, he’s been that way for as long as I can remember. He’s a completely toxic poster who is only in here for one thing and one thing only and that is to disparage everything Beavers. Nothing is out of bounds or off limits for this loser, and I guarantee he’ll be back here in about one week or sooner talking his cheap crap again.

  26. 10

I’m so happy about the win but truly concerned about the officiating. I’m really starting to wonder if they are dirty. The calls in the Washington game, 2 times in a row, were so obvious. Now in this game same scenario at goal line and officials standing right there missed 1) Gebbia’s upper body breaking the plain for TD, 2) blatant offsides, 3) blatant in-necessary roughing when duck player was pulling an already down Gebbia’s leg out of socket at end of play which put him out of the game.
Props to this team. I’ve been disappointed at the start of this season as I feel they should have come out stronger based on last year’s advancements. But even in a season where the officials are against them they continue to fight and fight.

  27. I’m excited to see Nolan play but also concerned that the change might break the trend upwards. If anyone hears status on Gebbia please post.

  28. 8
    1

JS decision to go for it on 4&3 from mid field in 1st half was not good. Risk reward was not there. It probably gave the ducks 3 points. His decision to go for 2 at 24-19 was also a head scratcher. That said, the game plan on offense was really good. Took what defense gave them and played off Gebbia’s strengths. D made solid adjustments and finished strong. That female ref was an absolute joke. Almost all of the blown calls were on her. Gebbia played to his ceiling which was good enough to beat the ducks. Good decisions and stayed strong in pocket. I’ll take that any day.

    • I don’t understand people that are questioning the call to go for two when you’re down by 5 late in the game. Most, if not all coaches at that level and some at lower levels too, have a playsheet that tells them where to take points (ie: when to go for two, when to kick the extra point, when to kick the FG instead of going for it. This is done because trust me, when you are calling plays on the field, time goes very fast! You don’t have time to sit there and do the math.

Oneoldbeav is 100% correct! Being down by 4 or 5 are the same (still need a TD to go ahead). You are going to try to go for 2, to bring the game within 3, so you can tie with a FG if need be. This is a good calculated risk! Kicking the extra point would have been the head scratcher!

      Go Beavs!

      • 4
        3

But it wasn’t late in the game, it was not even mid-way through the 3rd quarter. Too early to pull out that sheet and start playing the what-if game.

        • Agreed. Late in the game is one thing but it was too early for 2pts. Ducks kicked a FG on the next possession so we’re chasing 8 instead of 7. Then again, I don’t have access to his scoring playsheet.

  29. PICK’EM………
Several regulars haven’t made their picks yet; AK, Nice, SanDiego,Quizz, and others.
Of course, Sweaty and the dreaded BB are already in!

  30. Didn’t watch live; saw highlights. Ugly win, that was won on grit; it was well deserved.

Nationally televised games that are close in terms of score, are exciting & entertaining — upsets generate interest.

Can we add just a dash of positive consistency before the season finishes? :) I’d like to see it.

  31. Blue Collar Players vs “Elite Talent” and Coaching

A good measurement of a productive (good) coaching staff is the consistent improvement of players! With Oregon, having all of these “top tier” recruiting classes the last few years, yet continuing to lose key games every year it really shows a coaching deficiency! The other thing to consider here is these are still kids starting to become young men (the players) which can be an equalizer. One of the things I have always liked about the Beavs, ever since I started rooting for them back in the late 80’s, was the blue collar mentality. I think the proof is in the pudding, that if you bring in “project players” (players who are talented but need some coaching up, physical growth (or both), those guys can often outperform the primadonna 4-5* recruit that may be talented but lacks drive to strive and become better. Or in some cases, the lack direction and teaching from their coaching staff. Either way, I always prefer a guy that is going to work his ass off to get better (that has marginal talent) over the guys who feel that they are owed the world and don’t buy in to the team mentality. There were a lot of errors in the game last night but ultimately, the scrappier and more mentally tough team won.

Having humility, I admit I was wrong, when I said it was over (toward the end of the game). I love being wrong in those situations! :D

    Go Beavs!

    • It’s true, they did lose some key upperclassmen. But losing 4 or 5 players when you recruit a top 10 class consistently every year doean’t bring you down to the level of a team that consistently recruits around #50-60 classes.

      • That level of recruiting is supposed to build quality depth…”We don’t rebuild, we reload….etc. etc. cliche cliche.” The in-pratice reps against top talent should be preparing them.

  32. 12

A guy that deserves some big props was Chance Nolan. Comes in, cold, hasn’t taken a snap in a game this year (or at all in his career here) and takes the snap under center and sneaks in the game winner. There are a lot of things that can go wrong in those situations! Hell, even a false start would have screwed us. Fumbled exchange. Not getting enough leg drive to get in?! Crazy how a play that looks easy to execute can actually be very difficult in such a clutch situation. Awesome work.

    Go Beavs!

      • Very good point. Eldridge showed his experience.
How about Montibon filling in for Keobounnan? First significant action ever for the redshirt senior.
        Even Kipper was under control.

    • I had exactly the same thoughts. Most fans think it’s just a given, but as you pointed out and I totally agree, a few different things could have happened that could have been disastrous. To top it off, he sneaks it into the end zone for the game winner. What a way to start your career as a QB. Go BEAVERS! DUCKS = DOUCHE BAGS!

  33. 11

    Just watched the highlights.

Love it at the start of the Beavers first drive when the douche bag announcers say “Its going to be a long night Jamar Jefferson.” Then he goes for an 82 yard TD…hell yeah it was a long night…about 225 yards long…

Beason’s TD catch came on a very nice throw. I think Angry said it takes 6 games to judge a qb, and I think Gebbia’s next game is #6. Let’s see if he can stabilize and play up to his ceiling. : )

Then the announcers saying this was “one of the more improbable OSU victories in the history of the series.” Hyperbole. Hell, several people here saw UO’s weaknesses thus far (D line) and predicted OSU had a chance and would even win.

The bad spots inside the 5 for the second game in a row are WWF quality refereeing. I’m surprised a Duck didn’t come off the sideline with a folding chair and hit Gebbia over the back after his first TD/non-TD. Smith REALLY needs to put together a tape of @ UW and v. UO and file a formal complaint with the league. Its pretty clear the league doesn’t want OSU to disrupt league favorites.

    FTD.

  34. Just to be clear on Gebbia’s stats (not that they tell the whole story), even if you isolate his 2nd half stats and ignore the 1st half, he’s still a statistically average P5 QB at best.

Looking at P12 QB’s and the SEC (because they’ve played more games), his 2nd half completion % is above average, but his TD-INT and yardage numbers (and subsequently QBR) are below average.

  35. They need to break Gebbia’s habit of patting the ball before he throws. Doing that after staring down receivers is a INT risk. I’m surprised he’s developed that bad habit.

    • If he really is the student of the game, as he has been portrayed, my guess is he know better than to kill time by patting the ball. Wonder if he just lacks confidence in his protection or fears those hard hits. Maybe lack of conviction in his decisions?

The drive for perfection can, in many areas of life, cause hesitation.

      • I think you hit the nail on the head. He looks gun shy to me and hasn’t found a good feel for the pocket. You’ll see the best QB’s sense the pressure, and move properly. DA was the worst with the happy feet after USC thumped him one game.

  36. On the Gebbia debate….

Overall, he played a solid game…..BUT, he really stares down his primary target, and it has bit him a couple times. Better defenses will make him pay…the ducks defense has talent, but is poorly coached, imo…..Also, the snap. He needs to mix it up a bit to keep defenders from jumping the count. These are hopefully things he can improve on.

One guy that gets forgotten because he played for shitty Pettibone teams is JJ Young. He didn’t play much his first two seasons but rushed for almost 1000 his junior year at 7 freakin yards a carry and a little under 900 his senior year at 6 yards a carry. 18 TD’s between those seasons also. Not saying he’s top five, but had he played for an option team like Nebraska in that era, he may have been up there in national recognition.

I like the list until we get to Nall. He had the potential to reach that high, and was a great performer in a couple of games, two against the Ducks come to mind, which flavors retrospective perception. But as someone said way up above, Nall was not used effectively early on (not his fault, but Riley’s) and he did seem to disappear from time to time. The Stanford game was a memorable performance for all the wrong reasons. He seems to me to have been a bit of pouter. I’d put Bernard at 5. Durable, lots of good if not spectacular games, especially that long run of wins in 2006. By the way, the 2001 team had BOTH Simonton and Jackson on it, and finished with a losing record. Figure that out.

  37. 5
    13

You guys see that female Vandy kicker? Totally sucks at kicking, but they put her on the field to feel good. This is the downside of Trump losing, and it didn’t take long to show itself. Still, better than a Fascist.

I looked at it more as a publicity stunt for a winless Power Five team. Derek Mason has to be on the chopping block at the end of the season.

      • Coach Mason does have a daughter that was/is a student athlete and went through a dark, dark period with depression. I wonder if he is looking at his position as a coach as an opportunity to give some publicity to female student athletes since their season is basically done.

  38. 1

Beavs WBB wins 88-54. Too early to really get much out of beating Montana Western but a few observations: Beavers have depth, length, and a good inside/outside game. Good ball movement with the emphasis on getting the ball into the low post. I wish they had a little more quickness and speed but that’s not usually the trademark of a Rueck coached team. They’ll finish somewhere between 4-5th in the PAC-12 given Stanford, AZ, ASU, UCLA and the Schmucks, but they have some potential to be pretty good this season. It’s too bad the Kennedy Brown and Aquino are not available. Kennedy Brown gives them a solid defensive and additional offensive presence but I think she’s going to red shirt this season from what I’ve heard.

    • Sounds like everyone will have to be flexible in their scheduling if they want to continue the season.

At this point, everything is week to week.

  39. Hey I caught the end of something in the banner on ESPN. It said something about 3 weeks, for COVID protocol and in SF but then mentioned Oregon State playing in 3 weeks?! I know, really specific? lol I was basically wondering if teh Stanford game is already off?

    Go Beavs!

    • It occurs to me he and family got out of the US before all the lockdown/airport restrictions and they are having a great time in a Costa Rican beach village.

  40. If Barnes was smart he would put out a fundraising campaign for Westside modernization this week. Probably could pay for the whole thing either by early 2021 or make a huge dent and by time football kickoffs for 2021 it would be paid for. Huge momentum from the win over Oregon last night and Barnes needs to be smart and garner support from Beaver Nation while the Iron is hot.

  41. The win over Oregon will hopefully pay dividends on the recruiting trail. Positive comments from a few big recruits.

“I like them a lot,” Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde Top247 2022 quarterback AJ Duffy said. Arguably the top signal-caller out West in the junior class, Duffy has close to 40 offers. “Coach Smith is great coach and I like how he was a former quarterback so he understands the position at a very high level. I also like how the offense it’s multiple and really prepares you for the next level. They’re for sure heading in the right direction after that big win vs Oregon.”

  42. Eggers up with a piece on the CW victory. Lots of good stuff including Jermar’s remarks about his first run of the game:

Jefferson revealed that … his career-best 82-yard gallop down the right sidelines was Gebbia’s idea. …
“The play wasn’t supposed to go to me, but Tristan audibled it,” Jefferson said. “I saw the defense was unadjusted; I knew it was going to be a big hole. I went through it and saw daylight.
“He’s really a smart quarterback. He knows defensive coverages and safety rotations. He knows what he’s doing back there.”

    https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/a-game-for-the-ages-in-the-fog-at-reser

    • This is what I said in a previous thread. The running game is better because of his playbook knowledge. I don’t think most understand that and want Nolan. Nolan is 1a 1b with moore who also has great knowledge of the system and is very mobile. Also a legacy. I don’t think Jefferson is having the same year without great adjustments at the line by the quarterback. This was mentioned by lindren in earlier weeks as well.

      • My main concern in replacing Tibs – do we fall even further behind as a new scheme has to be learned? Also, you better not let him go unless you have a clear replacement in mind who will take the job.

    • 3
      6

Eggers glosses over the defensive issues. I still think a change at d coordinator is due at the end of the year. Tibs contract is up at the end of the year, I think. Tibs seems much better suited as a position coach. Smith can really show he’s not Riley and make staff changes when needed.

      • I do think at times tibs needs to go. Sometime though the defense is put in a bad spot either by offensive turnovers or the offenses inability to move the ball and keep the d off the field. It’s also tough without having big boys on the d line and he’s had to play with a younger/inexperienced secondary. They bypassed older experienced players to start developing younger talent with more upside. He also brings some reach with recruiting in the Midwest. Is there a better option out there that would come to Corvallis? I’d say give him another year or two to see what he can do with a defense that is experienced and has depth.

        • 1
          1

This is the time to make a change. If Tibs contract is renewed, it’ll be for three years. Having the defense play good sometimes isn’t good enough. There have been too many times the opponent has marched down the field for an easy score. In terms of scoring defense, the d gave up 33.2 points last year in conference play. This year it’s 32.5 points. Not much improvement.

I would say it would be good to have someone come in and run the same base defensive scheme. The 3-4 is better suited to combat for today’s offenses and the available talent. Hard to find dline talent these days.

          • 2
            1

We’re still giving up the same amount of yardage we gave up last season, too. The takeaways have been an improvement, but the pass rush has regressed. The defense is basically in the same state it was during GA’s tenure and this is year 3 for JS.

Ultimately, why would you extend a DC who has fielded three consecutive bottom quartile defenses?

        • Tibs and his staff don’t seem to have any creative ideas on how to get Hamilcar going either. It seems to be the same edge rush and then double-teamed on most snaps. In theory, someone else should be stepping up if he’s always double-teamed, but that has been hit or miss. Rashad has missed a lot of tackles in space also though that’s not on the staff.

    • Eggers provides the rationale for what some on this blog, notably Angry, think is Smith’s undue risk-taking. For the most part, in my view, Smith mostly adheres to the new metrics formulae, but according to Eggers, Smith knows that his team will always be chronically undermanned so he has to take more chances in order to tilt the equation in his favor via unconventional play calling.

  43. It feels weird having more games coming after the Civil War game. I would prefer the season to end on that win, it gives a lot of momentum for recruiting and fundraising going into the next season. Now there is still time for the Beavs to lose some games and kill the momentum. I suppose they could win some more also, but hey, it’s the Beavs…

    • Momentum for recruiting and fundraising is great but the game reps are just as or more important. We have an opportunity to really get the ball rolling. I see us going 2-1 in our last 3 games with a loss to Utah and win against Stanford and TBD game. Heck, maybe we get a bowl bid as well. That would really get people fired up.

  44. It’ll be pretty hard for Gebbia to make it back for next week’s game vs Utah. Soft tissue injuries are ones that linger for a while. So Nolan is going to get his shot.

Since we haven’t seen him play a game yet, it’ll be quite a mystery as to how they will plan the offense. Will they let Nolan run options? That’s not in Gebbia’s playbook.

From what I can remember, Nolan is accurate but doesn’t have an arm to make down field throws. But now seeing the wrs aren’t much of a deep threat, maybe that won’t be an issue.

    • I’m sure it’ll be Nolan because of politics but everyone is assuming he’s the backup even the he’s listed as either or with moore. I noticed in a presser in camp when smith was talking about the QB battle that he kind of just had to say nick moves the ball. To me reading between the lines said that they wanted Gebbia or Nolan to take the job but moore was the one that got the offense being productive. He has the same amount of time as Gebbia in the system and is close to an equivalent runner as Nolan (check his tape he can run). I’m surprised everyone is so quick to dismiss him being the little bro of great Matt moore. He just didn’t come in with the hype of the other guys and has had to work his way up the hard way. Like I said before the right checks at the line make a world of difference just ask Jefferson. Think Peyton manning. Not saying they’re comparable but being able to take advantage of a misalignment or bad play call in the situation shouldn’t be overlooked.

  45. 1
    1

Interesting point above about Gebbia audibling into Jefferson’s TD run. Gebbia is an average-to-good QB as of now, which isn’t bad for five career starts. If he can figure out the first half issues, he’ll be very good to great.

  46. Was the lack of fans and home field advantage on display in Reser? Would the refs have robbed Gebbia of a TD with a crowd there? The refs gave OSU poor spots at UW, so maybe its incompetence or a desire to protect conference favorites and have a PAC “playoff” rep?

UO is lucky it didn’t play Ohio State. They would have been exposed from the get go and there the false narrative of their quality and high ranking wouldn’t have lasted a month.

    • Yup, some WR from the practice squad who had a few QB starts in college at Wake Forest is getting the nod. Interestingly, the Broncos appealed to the NFL to let their offensive quality control coach be activated. He was apparently a starter for one of the Florida directional schools back in 2012. They wanted him because he knows the playbook so well. The NFL said no. Can you imagine someone taking NFL snaps who last played competitive football eight years ago and it was at the group of five level? The Broncos apparently are dead set against forfeiting.

  47. Help me out here. I keep seeing both here and quite a few other places online, that if the refs hadn’t screwed over OSU at UW, they would be 3-1. The Jefferson runs took place at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The way they were moving the ball, they probably would have scored a TD to make it 28-24. There’s a whole quarter left of football and stopping UW from scoring again was not a given. Am I missing something here? Why was this a win if not for the refs?

    • Are people saying it would have been a win? I feel like most the talking heads are saying it could have been a win. If you go all analytics on it the Beavers were probably jobbed out of like 3.8 expected points or something like that (just a guess)

      • Yeah, possible win. The Beavs seemed to have the momentum until then. Gives them the lead and changes the complexion of the game. It’s college football though, anything could have happened.

          • But the blocked punt and INT are the Beavs making plays, not having plays and downs taken away from them.

They get the right spot at UW, and score, they have the lead, yes, the outcome is still in doubt, but its has the potential to be a very different game. Plus, the OSU D has been a second half D.

  48. No Jake Luton today… Luton era may be over. If I was coach I’d just keep playing Luton, get him more experience since he will be the backup for the next 3 or 4 years. Help with the tank too.

    • 1
      4

Luton is falling faster than DA after he was exposed. My guess is Luton is out of the NFL by 2022. Don’t see a Hekker 2.0 situation here. Highly unlikely he’s their backup for 4 years.

      • He would have been better off not getting his shot this year and surfing benches for the next few years with his “potential” still intact.

Now teams are just going to see him as a failed project after only a few months in the league.

      • I guess it is not that much dead money to cut him but it doesn’t seem like a ton of upside either. Maybe they prefer to have a vet for backing up Fields or Lawrence but I just don’t see a real driving force behind a GM cutting a QB they spent draft capital on. If Caldwell gets fired I could see that changing, but the whole plan all year was to tank so I imagine Caldwell has at least one year left.

    • Jaguars article talked about starting the other guy because he is on a one year deal and won’t be back. They will let him take the hits since Luton is under contract for a few more years.

  49. Great article. Wilner calls her out by name, as he should. The calls were egregious, but again, will there be any accountability? She even looked uncertain on Gebbia’s touchdown. She waited awhile and then came running in when he was clearly a couple of yards in the endzone and finally put her hands in the air. I mean, does she have a sight issue, lacks confidence and knows there’s replay to fall back on? The problem is that a TD needs to be called first and then overturned if you have evidence the player is not in the endzone, not the other way around.

    • If pac 12 want refs to improve, they have to have accountability. Doesn’t have to be public but needs to be addressed. She struggled all night and seems many of her mistakes are coachable. That said, maybe the message from pac 12 was to benefit ducks on any close calls. Don’t think so otherwise we probably would have seen some holding calls on last drive… can call on almost every play and if you really wanted to fix games, it would be an easy way to do it. I’ll chalk this up to pure incompetence

    • After rewatching part of the first half, a catch and spin by Taylor looked like a first down when landing on his back at the marker. Marked one yard short. The end around to Lindsey also looked like a first and he too was marked short. At least one of those plays results in the drive stopping. It didn’t seem big at the time because they still had downs to pick up the first but that is inexcusable and happens frequently.

    • Disappointing to read the leader of the team (Ethan) is out of shape. I don’t care if gyms are closed or practices are limited. Go run around and get your legs under you. This is it for for him. Does he not realize he has under achieved and now it’s his team?

  50. Eggers:
‘Much of the recruiting credit goes to second-year assistant coach Marlon Stewart’ – no way to compare straight across but I have no recollection of Tinkle’s jc recruits.

‘Tinkle says his newcomers are coachable’ – hmmm

    • Poor guy was called up a day before and had no idea what the speed of the game was like.

I thought the Broncos could have at least called some WR screens, or some crossing routes, to avoid some three and outs.

  51. 3

No sightings of BeaversBlow….hmmm, inquiring minds want to know why s/he is so conspicuously absent from this Beaver Blog. 41-38 Bitch….that’s why! Duck off forever!

  52. Hayes just kicked a 48 yard field goal. Those were big points as it turns out. Are we confident in his ability now? Should be solid there for a few more years.

    • Good catch. Didn’t realize that either. Also, Kitan Oladapo had 9 tackles, 2nd on the team. Anyone know his story? Don’t see any offers so thinking preferred walk-on as he’s from central catholic. Mechanical engineering major too so he’s got some smarts.

  53. Sucks gebbia got hurt, hopefully it isn’t that bad, seemed like he turned a page in the game, maybe it was starting to slow down for him The last drive and almost all off of the second half he was nails. Also liked what big Jim Wilson said when dealing with hole fans about the win being nice bullet in the holster. Post game hosted by Josh Worden is worth the listen as well, thx 2 dft coming up with the idea..

  54. So the ice story Shelly Smith (awkwardly) told about Vanessa. Vanessa used to teach at tualatin high school. Anyone have kids that knew her? I want to say she left about 7 years ago for cali. My roommate at the time hooked up with her a few times. Forgot she was related to the famous Shelly Smith. What a small world and a pathetic story.

    • Do you think the story was factual? My bullshit radar went up once she started babbling. Shelly did not look happy to be on the field. How freakin’ long has she been at ESPN?

      • I know Vanessa was a duck fan. Never heard her tell that story. I’m a little surprised she never mentioned it since I am a beaver fan and we jabbed each other some about that. I don’t think my now married roommate still talks to her. Too bad we can’t help us out. Lol

          • Had the same thoughts. Reply from the roommate:

“Ha. I heard hit by ice but missed that it was Vanessa. Pretty sure the shitty drunk actions occur on both sides”

          • A few in the last 20 years were cold enough to freeze drink ice into a semi solid mass by the 4th quarter. Could someone have slung that at her?
I asked a few old timers who played in the CW, in 1964 it was around 15° at game time. Other then that no one remembers a frozen CW. Im calling BS unless it was drink ice.

    • I did a quick check on Smith because I thought she used to be a bigger deal at ESPN as it struck me as a little odd to see her freezing in Corvallis on the sideline with very minimal screen time. Turns out she had a stroke in 2017.

  55. 4

Interesting to see Pro football focus has Gebbia rated as the top Pac12 QB of the week, and for the full 2020 season. (For QBs with over 100 snaps)

Guess Angry wasn’t too far off with his Aaron Rogers 2.0 prediction, haha.

    • 1
      2

Stiff competition when there are exactly four candidates with over 100 attempts: Gebbia, Garbers, Shough, and Slovis.

Not sure how they worked out that Gebbia is better than Slovis, but PFF is really hurting the credibility of their paid content.

    • That’s too bad, just when it looked like he was gaining confidence. I thought I saw his smiling mug on some social holding a Beav 41-38 t-shirt and I was thinking he didn’t look like he was in too much pain. Well, it’s time for the Beavs to have a first-time starter light up an opponent for once instead of the other way around for about a dozen times over the past decade.

    • Where was it reported Gebbia is out?

Only thing I’ve seen is this quote from Smith that Joe Freeman posted.
“Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith said QB Tristan Gebbia’s hamstring injury is “significantly more serious than we thought.”
Smith said the Beavers are hopeful Gebbia will play Saturday vs. Utah, but that will depend on the results of further testing/treatment this week.”

Almost sounds like Smith isn’t wanting to reveal too much so Utah has to prepare for both Gebbia and Nolan this week.

        • I think we’ll all be pleasantly surprised at Nolan’s skills. However, the o line must take pressure off Nolan and open holes for JJ. To build Nolan’s confidence early on, swing passes to JJ out of the backfield, bubble screens on the edge. Utah will stack 8 0in the box so hot to make them pay for it. A fair amount of crap draw plays, a throw back screen or two….anything to keep Utah from getting to aggressive. Some quick hitting passes like slants should work…need high % pass plays too. Might go double right end sets too for additional blocking and definitely attack the edges with speed. Utah has a physical front d line to trying to run it down their throat probably won’t work.

          • Need lots of 2TE sets…….and be willing to toss to either TE.
Sadly, doubt we see wing-T or even many 2RB sets. Darn.

And, Swammi, don’t worry about autocorrect, it’s usually easy to translate.

  56. I think the fog helped push Smith to run the ball more in the Civil War. With Gebbia being out now for the Utes maybe we still get more run game? Let’s hope so. Our offense needs to be on the field more to give our defense time to re-coup during the game. If our defense can play well this weekend I think we win… even with a 2nd string QB.

    • They will have more options in the running game this week with Nolan. Wing T??? Haha. But seriously the personnel is there.

The offense will have to change to fit with Nolan. He will need to show he is a threat to run early in the game. Utah will obviously look to take jefferson out of the game and has a good run d.

If Nolan shows he can move the ball with his legs, it’ll open up lanes for Jefferson and the rest of the offense.

  57. 2
    7

I like how Angry starts a conversation about Trump and politics and then erases all of my responses. Whatever it’s his site. Anyway, Is Utah a challenge? I haven’t caught any of their games this season but they usually give us trouble.

    • From watching the UW game, their D is on par with UW. Very physical and can cover WR. Had trouble with UW TE in the 2nd half. Will be interesting to see if we can match their intensity.

      • Thanks AKBeaver. That sounds promising. I felt like we matched up and played well against Washington. Due to refs and decision making we came home with the L. Sounds like if we bring the same physicality as last week we should be sitting pretty good.

        • NP. Also similar offense from Utah in that they have solid RB, not much WR, and a very good TE. The TE was lighting UW up in the first half and they went away from him in the second half. Their QB isn’t anything special so if we can play 4 quarters of D, I like our chances.

          • This seems very promising and with our momentum we should be very confident going in. Angry’s prediction of a North title isn’t out of reach, need some help but we have a path now.

    • 1
      1

No big deal Tango- My post and a few others disappeared from that same topic also. Its like they never happened…. which is apropos given current events. As for the game, its going to be 8 in the box till the Beavs can find a way to loosen them up. More TE work is my hope because they are good and need to be used more. Defensively, they need to get it going earlier, as in don’t give up 150 yds. rushing the 1st quarter. Go Beavs.

Smith presser. In addition to Gebbia and Nolan comments.
Gumbs – no where near ready, even to practice. Maybe next year or when he’s a 28 yr old senior.
Morris – still feeling effects of covid.
Same guys missing last week will likely miss this week too.
