Posting in Angry’s absence today.

(WSU game recap from Ohiobeav)

Good win by Beavs. When does Bray get his extension?
BG is growing up and the idea should be Learn how to manage the game without losing It. He is now 2 for 2.

Lindgren play calls are still alarming at times. JS didn’t resort to any absurd gambling, which is growth.

Kickers/field goals are an adventure and may force different approach for future games.

TEs contributed for the 1st time since Fresno St, that was nice to see.

Martinez, Colletto, Grffin in that order please.
Sacks and Turnovers, check

Go Beavs, JS has a victory over every conference team and all streaks have been broken.

Bowl eligibility next up

I had to miss the live broadcast again amd ended up rewatching via youtube and fast forwards.
One thing i didnt see happen(correct me if I’m wrong) was Gulbranson being used to throw home run balls. Seems odd that the guy with the better arm doesnt need to throw downfield, but when Nolan was playing you could count on multiple “stretch the field” throws being forced into the game plan.
Also, Gulbranson was lucky he didnt get picked 2 or more times. Several passes batted down at the line of scrimmage or WSU defenders getting a finger tip on the ball but just never creating the turnover. He’s playing with fire a little, but I do find the offense more entertaining when BG is out there. The team seemed to play more with a sense of purpose yesterday which we havent seen in a while.
On D, bend but dont break works. If Ward wasnt so slippery, they would have had more sacks, but that’s Ward’s game. Eacape the pass rush, with poorly thrown balls in those situations. Good scenario for the Beavs to defend.

  2. THEY SAID:
Eggers, “It’s anybody’s game here late in the 3Q.”

Daschel, “it felt like the Beavers had control throughout the game.”

WSU edge rusher Ron Stone Jr, ““We didn’t stop the run, so why would they have passed the ball?”

JS on Martinez, “It’s interesting, because we’re not blocking any different if Damien’s in, Jam’s in, Deshaun – but the guy has a capability to create some things …”

The Hammer on BG, “Sometimes with the way our offense is working, and the way we’re able to run the ball, sometimes you kind of have to have a game manager-like mentality. I thought he did that perfectly.”

    • “JS on Martinez, “It’s interesting, because we’re not blocking any different if Damien’s in, Jam’s in, Deshaun – but the guy has a capability to create some things …”

O.o That’s shocking. They need to put in whomever is producing consistently when they’re in.

      • I said this a few weeks ago, but it’s their vision and patience. Early in the season, they were hitting the first hole they see instead of seeing the flow of blocking and finding the second hole that opens up. Quizz and Nall had that vision with zone blocking. It’s not the first hole you see that you hit, it could be the second or third hole that opens up. This is why you get some tackles for loss, but also get big explosive runs at the same time. Patience when hitting the hole is the key that has been missing.

Late in the 3rd quarter, the Beavs were driving to go up 14, Eggers’s statement is sort of cliche. I always thought Eggers was bitter that Smilin’ Mike Riley still isn’t the head coach!

  3. How did Gulbranson do? I only saw highlights, which made it look like he’s getting more aggressive pushing the ball into tight spaces. The completion percentage paints a less flattering picture.

    • BG finished with a QB rating of 104.8, better than only Ward (WSU), Plummer (CAL), and McCown (CU).
Yes, he put the ball into tight spaces but was bailed out by good receiver play (or some luck?).
The lack of drops and limited penalties was nice to see, maybe some credit to BG there? A little?

      • Notice the drops have been less with BG at qb.

A)More focus in practice for the WRs or
B)BG can actually spin the ball or
        C) Both

        • “Does Nolan’s ball (lack of tight spiral) contribute to the number of dropped balls? He throws a decent deep ball but only if he can step into the throw and use his whole body, doesn’t have a strong arm. Think he took a couple sack yesterday because of the pick versus BSU, and now holding the ball because his arm isn’t strong enough to launch it into the stands without stepping into it. Saw haener launch it into the stands several times to avoid sacks, don’t need a rocket launcher but I’m not convinced Nolan has a strong enough arm to make the necessary throws to win the 9+ games.“

Posted this after the Fresno game, some comments/opinions don’t age well, this one sure did

          • Not sure about 65, but from what he has shown yes, against Boise he was trying to throw it out of bounds and couldn’t. He is a whole body thrower, if he can’t step into it then the ball floats. He started throwing too many balls late off his back foot and that’s when the interception came.

    PFF positional comparison with Colorado:

    QB- adv. Beavs
    RB- adv. Beavs
    WR/TE- adv. Beavs
    OL- adv. Beavs

    DL- adv. Beavs
    LB- adv. Beavs
    DB- adv. Beavs

We’re basically a middle of the road Big 10 team now without a QB that can make big throws: protect the ball, run the ball, and play good defense and we should secure bowl eligibility.

It’s not that I don’t believe in things that look like luck, but really those things are at their core predicable outcomes if we know all the input variables.

  5. Before I say what I’m about to say and get hate for it… overall I liked our play last night. Defense did their job 90% of the time and we had heavy run offense.
But I think this could have been a much closer game, maybe even a loss (maybe), if the Coug receivers had got all those dropped balls. They reminded me of us earlier in the season.
But I’m happy we won and not trying to be Debbie Downer.

    • No hate here. But you can always conjecture what might have been. The reality is you can’t run the experiment twice. Beavs are 5-2 with good and bad luck along the way.

    • I agree about all the dropped passes by the Cougs. It felt like that was a significant factor. Our D put a lot of pressure on Ward, but they were dropping passes even when he wasn’t being pressured.

I was also surprised by the lack of PI calls on our DBs. Maybe they’ve improved on that but it did look like a couple of them would have been called in other games we’ve played.

Just nice to see a few things go our way for a change.

Not pretty, but a victory over a winning team who had something to play for. Stanford win also looks a little better after the Cards beat ND in South Bend.

“Lindgren play calls are still alarming at times.“

Can’t say I agree with this at all, at least in this game. What were the bad calls? If you ask me, this was one of Lindgren’s best games of the year. I mentioned it in the previous thread, but he stuck with what was working. Ran the ball, gave Colletto multiple looks inside the 5. They ran the same play action rollout tight end drag play about 5 times and it was an easy completion 4 of the 5 times. I only recall one instance of them dialing up a deep ball on 1st and 10 that felt like a drive staller (it didn’t end up being that, as this was the drive that ended in the Gould touchdown). The only other play I can think of that I didn’t like was late 2nd half we ran it up the middle on a 3rd and 5 at our own 16. Felt too conservative.

I definitely think Lindgren has had his issues during this season but yesterday didn’t feel like that at all. He kept it simple and it worked. Yeah, you kinda want more than 24 points but we ran it twice as much as we passed and I think that’s something we all want to see.

    • Yep agree. I was at the game and WSU looked really small. Lingren committed to the run and didn’t get cute or put BG in position to lose the game. Credit Lingren for not fucking it up but it was easy to see the advantage Beavs had on front line. I kept saying to myself “run it again” and for the most part, we did. Riley would have found a way to lose this game

    • 7
      1

Did not like the clock management at the end of the first half. About 2 minutes left and we go three and out deep on our side of the field with almost no time run off the clock (3 pass attempts, I think). Could have really swung momentum if WSU scored before the half.

  8. 12

Since I never get to comment until the following day after a game, and you guys cover almost every observation pretty well, here’s all I got…

Reser was again very electric last night. So nice to have the crowd showing up early and getting into games nowadays.

It’s well documented that the first comment ever shouted by a fan at the very first football game ever was “#7 was wide open!!” in disgust at the QB. But why am I constantly sitting next to that same guy all these decades later? New rule: idiot fan makes that comment and he immediately gets his own helmet and has to play QB the very next play.
Someone commented in the last thread about the frustration of uneducated fans and they’re right. It’s just silly.

Poll: what’s worse…the guy who turns around and tries to get everyone to stand and cheer before the ever-critical 2nd and 9 play after the game is out of hand… or the guy shouting for you to sit down for cheering during the opening kickoff?

That opening return sent the crowd into a buzz that seemed the last the whole game.

If anyone needs some good comedy on a sunday night just go to the ESPN college football power index. The computer has the Beavs at 46 right behind 3-3 Miami and 5 behind 3-4 Michigan State. The biggest WTF is Tennessee 6-0 behind 5-2 Texas who sits at 5. Texas lost to Bama, who Tennessee just beat. Bama of course, sits at 2. Go figure. Is this one of the computers that is used to figure the playoff ?

  10. 3
    3

They’re setting this shit up so it’s going to be Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and then the winner of the big 10 in the playoff

  11. 14

I think we should start showing some love to Silas Bolden. Extraordinary and critical TD catch at Stanford, big kick return, the occasional fly sweep for a first down. We never talked about him much…

  12. Here’s a question: looking at the rankings and the teams that are ranked near us in different ones, what ranking would you give the Beavs nationally? Intuitively, somewhere in the 30’s seems right because we can’t seem to break through against top 25 teams. But when I look at the rankings, the teams I definitely wouldn’t bet on us to beat start right around #20 (Texas). Everyone above there I would rate as a toss up.

    #25 Tulane
    #24 Miss St.
    #23 NC State
    #22 UNC
    #21 Cincinnati
    #20 Texas
    #19 Kentucky
    #18 Illinois
    #17 Kansas State
    #16 Penn State
    #15 Utah
    #14 Syracuse
    #13 Wake Forest
    #12 USC

  13. I played golf with my WSU buddy this morning before work. It was nice for me! We always talk football and he said after watching the Beavs dismantle his team Saturday he feels the Beavs are just one good QB away from being the conference contender. I have to agree.

    • 4
      3

If we still had Game Manager Chance Nolan, we’d be way more in the Rose Bowl hunt right now. The defense is good enough and the supporting pieces on offense are there. Ironically, this is exactly what Lindgren described as his ideal QB: someone who is efficient, accurate, limits mistakes, and can occasionally make things happen with his legs.

  14. One stat I noticed from Saturday was 6/17 on third down. Out of curiosity, I found that the Beavs are currently 105th in 3rd down efficiency at 33% which is way down from last season’s 47%. Just for comparison, the top 15 teams on this list (includes UCLA, USC & UW w/ Utah at #17) are all over 50%.

  15. Chance still in concussion protocol this week. Do we know which game/play he was injured in? Was it during Utah? I know he came out early in that game, but was he injured the week before and playing through it?

    • Kicker star ranking are on a different scale than the 247/Rivals use. Basically, every P5 kicker is considered a 5*.
      G5 = 4*
      Lower levels are 0 – 3*

    Jason the Beaver poll:

Being told to sit down during opening kickoff is definitely a pet peeve and after having that exact experience while sitting on the old west side; I made sure I never purchased seats on that side again. It’s a huge reason why OREGON has a huge NATIONAL following, and osu doesn’t exist in comparison. I did catch a game at Autzen the following year, and the opposite situation occurred. While an entire section was standing, there was one fan who demanded we all sit down. The entire row turned around and told him that “we stand here”. Trust me I HATE the ducks and always cheer for their opponents, but they do get a lot of things right as far as gameday atmosphere.

  17. This probably won’t be said by anyone but me, but this is a trap game. Not in the sense that the Beavs could lose the game. Vegas thinks it’s a gimme.

It’s a trap game because the Beavs have little to gain from this game and a lot to lose. These are the toughest to get a team prepared for when you know the team coming to town is pretty bad. The #1 goal is to get through the game with no big injuries.

On offense, it’ll probably be super vanilla. Similar to the second half offense vs WSU or the game plan vs Montana St. Grind out possessions with hard running and high percentage play action passes. Few throws downfield.

On defense, force Colorado to throw the ball. They don’t have a QB that can win them a game.

Best case scenario, Beavs go out and stomp them in the first half and let the backups finish out the rest of the game. The backups could get some very valuable experience. Need the team sharp heading into the bye week with a huge road game looming. Hopefully at least get Lowe back coming out of the bye.

    • Agree with you Bill. I wonder how much the Beavs learned from last years series of disappointing “trap games” before they finally got bowl eligibility. That run of winnable games they lost may have a good effect going into this weekend and Colorado was part of that disappointing run of games.
I expect your best case scenario of a dominant first half and no let up by Beavs. I’d say the main concern again becomes turnovers/BG and how Lindgren calls those play action or straight drop back passes on first downs early.
Cal was held under 90 yards rushing on Saturday by Colorado. I’m hoping that Lindgren isn’t spooked by that enough to abandon running between the tackles again like he did at Utah.
Home game and home crowd should make a huge impact on this one. Brays defense will seek redemption after the many gaffes in Boulder last year.

I think Beavs come close to a shutout and offense will grind out drives until Colorado wilts later in the game then we see some big plays to break it open.

      Beavs 38- Colorado 10

    • I get what you’re saying but… If the Beavs can’t get up for this game then JS has issues. After last season losing to CU, this team should be amped. Plus bye week following this game and the fact this game makes us bowl eligible and the fact it’s at home… we should be ready to go. That said, BG, JS, and Lingren are all fully capable of finding a way to lose this game.

I’m not too worried with it being at home. Gulbranson still scares me a little. He’s thrown 3 ints in 2 1/2 games. Hopefully this game allows him to find a groove heading into the bye week.

I would like to see more passes to the running backs. Lots of time you can get a mismatch in the open field and a 3 yard pass can turn into a first down or even a TD. If you get Jam or Martinez on a short route with 1 guy to make the open field tackle. I like their chances to make that guy miss and the speed to take it for a big gain. The best part is its a really easy play for Ben and low risk. I like the screens they’ve done especially with Harrison. Bolden, Gould, Irish and Lidsay are all dangerous in those type of plays.

I want Ben to continue to target Velling. The kid is good and going to be great.

        • Lol. I think an important # is BG tossing 3 td ton1 interception in his 2 starts. IF we commit to running the ball and play good defense, we don’t need a qb to throw for 350 yds and 4 td. We need a qb to limit turnovers. So far, in his starts, BG has done that. Sure he’s made some ill advised throws and doesn’t look super comfortable under pressure, but he’s only started 2 games and he’s gaining experience. We know what Chance brings to the table. He might seem more comfortable under pressure but over his 1.5 years he’s been very turnover prone and whether it’s picks or fumbles. I don’t see that changing with him as he’s had plenty of time to work on his decision making and he was on pace this year to be worse than last year.

      • He threw 3 int in 1.5 games against the top 2 defenses in the conference (if you don’t include the Beavs). One of those defenses have one of the best dbs in the ncaa.

The game he played vs a below average defense? 0 int.

There’s one factor omitted from your post.

      Weather.

It’s not looking good for Saturday. CU’s run defense is awful. The Beavs need to run. Run it again. Run it some more. Then run the Buffs into submission.

I’m less worried about the Buffs being able to stop that game plan and more worried about this coaching staff implementing then following through on it.

That said my prediction is a ho hum win much like last Saturday.

      Beavs 31, Buffs 14

    • I would agree if Colorado was still winless and it was an away game. Plus Stanford was the trap game. Can’t have 2 trap games in 3 weeks, not possible.

    • Yes… from CA!
Kid seems to a really humble young guy. Coach also got the top kid out of Illinois. Wasn’t thrilled with the hire, but he has pulled in back to back great classes and has them playing good fundamental b ball.

  18. 3
    2

Final day of riding. Be back Wednesday night. Beavs will destroy Colorado. 38-14

People are really thinking upset? I’d put that at around 7% probability.

  19. I’m glad the Buffs got the win against Cal. That’s the typical “dead cat bounce” teams get after sacking a coach. The pressure is off, new voice in the locker room etc. They’re just not that good. Important for the Beavs not to let down though. They could use a game where they’re up two or more scores late.

    • Yeah the fellas were feeding off the energy last Saturday, home field has been quite excellent this year. I mean I don’t remember the last time I saw a lineman in Orange waving his arms and pumping up the crowd as they were last week when flipping the field at the 4th qtr change. That shit hypes me up.

  20. 1
    2

I thought the game plan against WSU was good because they had planned heavy running attack… not the case:

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/10/oregon-state-football-chance-nolan-remains-sidelined-more-carries-for-freshman-damien-martinez.html

Conservative on the fly: Oregon State went with a run-heavy offensive attack against Washington State, as 47 of the 71 plays were rushing attempts. That wasn’t entirely the plan heading into the game.
“We wanted to action pass and take some shots down the field,” Smith said. “But we struggled to protect (Gulbranson). So, we did way less of that.”
As Oregon State established a two-touchdown lead in the second half, Smith said, running the ball and the clock became a priority over hitting passes down the field.
“Some of those action passes … on tape, we dodged those just in regard to the protection,” Smith said.
While Oregon State plans to lean on its running game, Smith said don’t count on the Beavers hunkering down into a conservative offensive mode the rest of the way.
“If we play an opponent we feel like we can put the ball up 25, 30, 35 times, we’re not going to be shy about doing it,” he said.

I appreciate they adjusted to the run game but why wouldn’t that have been the plan going in? The last couple years on coaching decisions have scared me… I hope they grow up with more experience.

    • 6
      1

That is an incredible statement by JS. WSU strength has been getting to the qb. How is it possible to game plan for downfield passing without expecting problems with BG having time and eyes to see what will happen in front and beside him.
Credit for adjusting but F for planning. Good grief Charlie Brown.
JS and Lindgren sit in the film room and scout to attack WSU with passing not running the ball. Red flags for the fact even worse for admitting it publicly.

Thanks for the alert. From now on we must expect they will just try to throw against everyone and it will take a half of horrible football before they adjust. I guess that explains Nolan’s interceptions, that has been the game plan all along-
“Yeah, let’s just keep chucking it up guys!”

      • 1
        3

And this is why I can’t go into watching ANY game the Beavs play expecting a win, not even against Colorado. Don’t get me wrong I go in HOPING for a win, but been a Beaver fan to long I guess expecting a win.

      • You can’t set up play action without running the ball a healthy amount. If the plan was to take shots with play action, then the offensive plan was still to lean on the run to set up the pass, which has been the approach THE WHOLE SEASON (and last year). We’ve run more than we’ve thrown in every game. We run more than anyone in the PAC-12.

The perception that Lindgren is “pass-happy” is pretty funny. You guys are like Mr. Burns and Don Mattingly’s sideburns.

        • 1
          3

The argument that Lindgren is “run happy” would be absurd though. “Pass happy” is nearer to reality for those who have been watching, which you admit you haven’t. Lol
JS admits that the run heavy approach wasn’t the original plan. They had to be convinced to do it by facing WSU defense end pressure early. How can that even be sound coaching in that game?
Of course play action passes come off of The run but goodness, commit to the run instead of planning for the passes.
His comments strike me that “running is a necessary evil but the pass is where all the fun is.” Kind of thinking rather than run them into the ground then take a deep shot that breaks them, and is high percentage.

          • This is correct. It isn’t so much the amount, but the flow of the passes/runs which can be baffling at times. How many times in key possessions did they start with a 1st down on 3 runs plays, followed by a deep shot and punt shortly afterwards. It always seems to be a matter of either quick to try to outsmart, or antsy to just chuck another deep ball and see if it works. Lindgren needs a giant David Carradine picture on the window “Patience young Grasshopper”

Coach Boone believed in his offense: “I run 6 plays, split veer, just like novacaine, give it time, it always works…”

Lindgren: “I run 6 times and abandon it for what might work…”

  21. 4
    22

Maybe its just me but this season has been kind of a bummer and I’m not sure even winning out will change it. Not that its anyone on OSU’s fault, just a combination of things. The impending demise of the Pac-12, the Pac-12 exposing itself as a completely mediocre league yet again, the schedule in hindsight being so laughably weak that even 10 wins would seem ho-hum (and likely resulting in something like and Alamo Bowl appearance). Sorry to be Debbie Downer but its how I feel.

    • 3
      9

I feel lukewarm at this point in the season and have stopped watching games because of the effort it requires (late starts, P12 network, etc.) Those 20 minute highlight packages on Youtube are good enough. It’s kind of like the Riley years: we aren’t going to be terrible, but the ceiling has moved lower after the Utah and USC losses.

The one nice thing that would be salvageable is a finish in the top 25. I don’t have much hope of beating UW or Nike, though.

  22. CU played my Gophers In Minneapolis. It’s a nutshell…. They were terrible. 49-7 with the TD scored against 2/3rd stringers late in the fourth.
Beav’s should be able to run at will. Our top back ran for 202 yards in the first half and one series in the 3rd. Their line and backers could not get off blocks and tackled poorly. Their interim HC was the the OC at Minnesota last year. He sucked!!!! Finally got fired 2/3rds into the season.
The only teams that ran it more were the three service academies. Should be a comfortable win unless the team gets overconfident. Run heavy with some play action and some fly sweeps to make them pay for cheating on the interior runs.

  23. Noticed the Colorado QB from last year, Brendon Lewis has entered the transfer portal this week.
He had a good game against OSU last year. Not sure how he fell from being a full year starter last year to 3rd string this year? Looks like he started week 1.
Anyway, glad Colorado is down a QB. I think Lewis has a ton of potential.

      • I only saw him vs Oregon and Oregon State last year, so pretty small sample size, but he looked the part to me. Mobile and throws a nice looking ball. A little hard to believe CO has 2 better QBs on their current roster, tbh

          • Kiss of death lol, that means their new qb may be decent by year 4 once the game slows down and he understands the playbook finally…poor CU fans are in for years of torment and they likely don’t know it

          • I don’t know but as it is who is on the roster and currently expected to enroll?

Is he better than BG in a 2nd year? Chance? Gebbia? TBH based on history not completely sure I trust this staff to make the correct call on who should be starting. Maybe the qbs are just that close and no one can definitively set themselves above the others.

Doesn’t mean shit right now but it’s still fun to think about potential bowl game matchups….

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/pac-12-bowl-projections-usc-oregon-ucla-picked-for-rose-bowl/ar-AA134cnI

    ESPN (Kyle Bonagura)

Sun Bowl – Oregon State vs. Pittsburgh (This would be the 3rd time against Pitt in a bowl game. Barf!)

    ESPN (Mark Schlabach)

Sun Bowl – Oregon State vs. Notre Dame (This would also be the 3rd time against ND in a bowl game. Yes, please!)

    CBS Sports (Harry Palm)

Sun Bowl – Oregon State vs. Syracuse (Barf! I predict this would be a very sparsely attended bowel game)

    College Football News

Alamo Bowl – Oregon State vs. Texas (Rematch of the 2012 Alamo Bowl. I’d be down)

    247 Sports (Brad Crawford)

LA Bowl – Oregon State vs. San Jose State (The storyline would be Brent Brennan vs OSU. Also pretty sure we have a non conference game against them in the next few years. Meh)

    Pro Football Network (Oliver Hodgkinson)

Las Vegas Bowl – Oregon State vs. Maryland (2007 Emerald Bowl rematch. Meh.)

    Athlon Sports (Steven Lassan)

Sun Bowl – Oregon State vs. Florida State (I’d be ok with this one too)

    Action Network (Brett McMurphy)

First Responder Bowl – Oregon State vs. Nebraska (LOLOL! TPB vs UPB. I’d actually be ok with this one)

    The Sporting News (Bill Bender)

Sun Bowl – Oregon State vs. Duke (Hard pass)

    USA Today (Erick Smith)

Las Vegas Bowl – Oregon State vs. Florida (Yes, please)

The Athletic (Stewart Mandel, Scott Dochterman)

Sun Bowl – Oregon State vs. Notre Dame (Yes again)

Wilner has us in the Sun as well. He doesn’t predict opponents.

Regardless of who we play los vegas bowl and holiday bowl minimum is my/the hope. No sun bowl or repeat la bowl(I like la bowl but did it last year-got Covid and we lost)

    • Vegas and Holiday bowl! Vegas is vs the SEC this year.

Have to finish in the top 4 to get serious consideration for those two.

LA Bowl should get moved up over the Sun Bowl in the selections. Easier location to get to and a great stadium. Much more stuff to do than El Paso.

    • The San Diego Country Credit Union Holiday Bowl is in Petco Park, Wednesday Dec. 28 at 5 pm to be televised by Fox Sports:

      https://holidaybowl.com/

Not a football stadium…the old SD Chargers stadium hosted a Holiday Bowl in 2019 and was torn down in 2020.

      Plus its SEC.

Vegas sounds like the better bowl (though SD is the better location IMO). Beating an SEC team would probably be better for end of season rankings. Dec 17, 4:30 kick off.

Alamo bowl sounds like another good option. Thursday, Dec. 29, 8 pm.

Harry Palm? Is that a real name? I dont follow these things but that can’t be real, right?

Sounds like he may have some things to work out.

Forecast for Saturday says we might have some moist Beavers, but not too bad as the rain should taper off as the afternoon goes on.

  27. Anyone else hear the Coors Light sweepstakes ad playing promising a VIP Game package to Reh-ser Stadiium? I mean, seriouslly people.

  28. WEEK 8 PHIL STEELE REPORT

Colorado has won 4 of the last 5 meetings (3-2 ATS). Last time here (‘17) Buffaloes were down 19-14 at halftime but got three 2nd half TD’s including one with 1:34 to make it 36-33 and the game ended on a missed 52-yard FG by Beavers. The series is tied 6-6 and the Home Team is just 2-4 (but 5-1 ATS) since ’14. Last year in a back-and-forth game the Beavers made a 60-yard FG as time expired to go to OT but failed to score in the second OT and lost on a 43-yard FG, 37-34 as an 11.5 pt road favorite. Oregon State opened 3-0 but had a close home loss to USC then lost at Utah by 26. I used Stanford on the Phil Steele Plus Tour and Oregon State needed a miracle 56 yd pass with :13 left to pull out the one-point win. Last week I used Oregon State -3.5 at home as a Key Selection and Ben Gulbranson got his first start and Oregon State opened with a 60 yd kick return to set a up 40/8 TD drive as Washington State had 6 offensive plays for 1 yard in the 1Q. Oregon State drove 87/12 before settling on a 26 yd FG to make it 10-3. Washington State drove 72/12 for a missed 29 yd FG attempt and it was 10-3 at halftime. Oregon State opened the 3Q with a 74/11 TD drive to make it 17-3. Washington State drove 81/7 for a TD to close to 17-10 with 4:15 left in the third. Oregon State drove 75/8 for another TD with 14:57 left, Washington State drove 49/6 before getting stopped on downs at the 38. Oregon State missed a 35 yd FG with 3:26 left and Washington State down 14 drove 67/11 to get the yard edge for the game 368-344, but Oregon State left with a 24-10 win. Colorado opened 0-5 SU and ATS and fired HC Dorrell. They had a bye and last week under interim HC Sanford they were home vs California and in the 1H Cal missed 2 FGs, was stopped on downs and intercepted and Colorado went 57/8 for a 31 yd FG with 4:54 left for a 3-0 halftime lead, but had a 141-103 yd edge. Colorado led 10-7 but Cal drove 36/5 (after fumble) for a 27 yd FG :with 00 left Colorado scored a TD and California 4&G from their 11 was stopped on downs in OT. My average game grades have Oregon State by 27.8 and the Buffs have lost their 3 road games by 25 ppg with none closer than 21. Jonathan Smith is 9-1 ATS as a HF and the Beavers have a bye on deck before their game at Washington.

Yep, it’s the BG show. If he is solid again vs Colorado, I’d stick with him. He’s been very solid and ultimately, if he can win games that’s what matters.

      • Yeah hopefully this is where he starts really putting it all together to lead down the stretch. This will be his last easy game, he needs all the parts to complete his game.

          • Radio clip, Colo Buffs beat writer said Lindgren wasn’t being much talked abt as a head coach candidate as he (Lindgren) had been encouraged to leave when he was at UC. Great guy, tho.

          • He clearly has a polarizing personality, but he fields a productive offense. Can’t see him being a good HC if he can’t recruit and retain good QB’s when he only has to recruit one position.

      • If Gulbranson plays a clean game and the Beavers win in dominant fashion (as they SHOULD) it will be difficult for the coaches to turn back to Nolan, even though both Nolan and Gulbranson will have two weeks to get healthy and ready for UW.

If Nolan had taken better care of the ball v. USC, Beavers would be ranked in the top 20 and the job would likely still be his.

You know the coaches are going to want to take “downfield shots” at some point. I remember when Andersen wanted more “explosive” long plays, and I suspect Lindgren/Smith will get itchy for some long passes for the big play impact, and to try and develop respect for the passing game so that the run game doesn’t always see 8-9 in the box. I don’t see the need for opposing Ds to worry about Nolan or Gulbranson consistently. Nolan is turnover prone and Gulbranson isn’t yet a high percentage passer. Fortunately, Jam and Martinez have the potential to break through and get to the second level when the D does load the box.

First, take care of business against Colorado. No more of last season’s playing down to competition please. I’d like to see Gulbranson take care of the ball, improve his completion percentage, and for the Beavers to win in a run-dominant fashion.

          • Yeah, he’s gotten lucky with a few. I just hope the game slows down for him and he learns to throw it away.

He could make his biggest jumps in growth with a good win today, and then with two weeks to prepare for an apparently poor Husky D. UW could be an intimidating environment for him, but Smith knows it well.

  29. 10

Never thought Drew Eubanks was going to stick in the NBA coming out of college, yet here he is playing some key rotation minutes for the Blazers and giving them a huge 3 pt play towards the end of regulation to keep them in the game. Blazers end up winning in OT.
Nice job Drew. Looking forward to when GP2 gets back from injury too. Kindof nuts that 2 Beavs could be playing at the same time for 1 team

  30. Interesting stat: Oregon state is 3rd in the nation in red zone defense. Pretty underwhelming in most all other major categories on offense and defense. Even in some things that I thought they were better at. It’s a shame that this is one of the worst offenses since Smith has taken over but ones of the best defenses.

  31. So for us to be able to make it to the pac championship we obviously need to win out. Then I think we would need USC or Utah to lose 2 more conference games and or UCLA lose 2. Oregon would have to lose 1 before our game. Also IDK what happens if UCLA and the Beavs have 2 wins but didn’t play each other what the tie breaker would be. Anyways IDK if this is all correct or not but was trying to figure out who we should be pulling for.

    • Sounds right and it’s highly unlikely. Failing to pull out the USC game cost the Beavs a chance for a special season. CW is our Super Bowl now.

      • So we should be pulling for UCLA today? I mean I usually always root against the sux but would obviously rather go to the championship. If we win out that’s still a special season in my book.

  32. Truly Luck of the Beavers that this is the year of the format change for the championship game. If it were still North/South, Beavs could simply win out and hope for UCLA to go undefeated. Best case scenario is:
Root for UCLA to go undefeated, which would give USC and Oregon each another loss
    USC 2 losses
    Oregon 1
Utah/Oregon game will give either team loss #2 (hopefully Utah)
Beavs win out and finish 10-2 results in:
    Oregon 2 conference losses

Creates a 4 way tie for 2nd place but I don’t see how Beavs overcome 2 losses head to head and get in.

In terms of rooting interests: UCLA needs to win out, USC and Utah need to be upset by any team besides Oregon and UCLA for their 3rd conference losses. Looking at the schedules it isn’t likely. Maybe WSU pulls out a miracle at Utah today. I don’t see USC losing again on their schedule, Biggest non whistle of the year in PAC12 was the 4th and 6 stop by OSU… Directly costs a shot at the Rose Bowl in hindsight.

Civil War should be for the North and a spot but LODB

    • Never leave the game to the referees.

If Nolan even cuts his INTs to two v. USC, Beavers probably win that game. Giving them 4 extra possessions and losing by 3 apparently pained Nolan.

  33. Checking off a bucket list item for my college football obsession. I’m at Penn State for the White Out game against my Gophers. Retro Benny flag flying along with my U of M one.
There will be a Beaver cap in Beaver stadium tonight.
    Go Beavs!
If anyone has any Jerry Sandusky jokes… please share lol.

  34. Some interesting remarks from the season prediction thread:

“Beavers4Life: This team, season, etc just seems like the best product Oregon State has had in a long time. If they go 7-5 or even 5-7, then it will be because of injuries or poor QB and OL play. This team is not “Loaded”, but it’s as deep as it has ever been at all the positions. OL, DL, LB, CB, S, RB, WR, TE(?), QB.

Angry: I guess another weakness that’s not any position group per se would be the deep ball. Gulbranson should probably be QB #2 for this reason. If Nolan can’t complete passes over 20+ yards with consistency might have to make that change. I like Gebbia still, but it’s clear that injury messed up his trajectory, and he’s never really taken the leap.”

  35. Good Lord, college gameday is insufferable. Does anyone watch this drivel? I was able to watch for about two minutes. Did they add that self-absorbed blowhard Pat McAfee in an effort to be hip?

  36. Its such bullshit the announcers using Bo Jackson’s thing “No knows” with Nix. The guy is like a 100th the player as Jackson.
