  1. Transfer portal activity is going to pick up considerably this week and next week when all the bowl games are determined. The new windows open up once the conference title games are over.

Beavs will need to defend their roster, players like Martinez and Newell. It will be a crowded backfield next year if all return. All four are capable of starting.

JS will need to keep a sharp eye on the QB market. Need to at least bring in someone who is capable of pushing for the starting job or is heads and shoulder above BG and Chance. If one transfers, so be it. Then hopefully have a bridge to Chiles.

Chiles is enrolling in January, so he’ll be ready to go sooner than later. Coaches still may want to Redshirt him, but only if Chiles is not physically ready and hasn’t shown he is head and shoulders above BG and Nolan. I love having 2 QB’s with starting experience though going into next season. I can see Chiles pushing for the #2 spot. Don’t forget we have walk-on Dom Montiel and RS-Fr Throckmorton on the roster as well. Throckmorton may push for more starting time next season, but will need blowout wins @San Jose State, UC Davis and SDSU next fall to get Throckmorton in the game to give him game experience.

The transfer portal will be interesting how Coach Smith utilizes it to fill the spots of those choosing to leave early by entering the draft(Wright for instance). May need to get some transfers in the defensive backfield, but I’m not sold we need to go and get a QB from the transfer portal.

FWIW, I met Newell’s mom, Robin, last week. She was complimentary of the program and was happy to have been at every game. Which isn’t to say that some school with mad NIL money wouldn’t try to poach him

    • I see these 4 Scenarios playing out:

      1) USC wins
      CFP – USC
      Rose Bowl – UW
      Alamo – Utah
      Holiday – Oregon
      Vegas – UCLA
      Sun Bowl – Or State
      LA – Wazzu

      2) USC wins CCG
      CFP – USC
      At large NY6 – UW
      Rose Bowl – Utah
      Alamo – Oregon
      Holiday – Oregon State
      Vegas – UCLA
      Sun Bowl – Wazzu
      LA Bowl – at large

      3) USC wins CCG
      CFP – USC
      Rose Bowl – UW
      Alamo – Utah
      Holiday – Oregon
      Vegas – Oregon State
      Sun Bowl – UCLA

      4) Utah wins CCG
      USC at large NY6
      Rose Bowl – Utah
      Alamo – Oregon
      Holiday – UCLA/Or State
      Vegas – UCLA/Or State
      Sun Bowl – Wazzu
      LA Bowl – at large

      • my 4th one is wrong, left out UW

        4) Utah wins CCG
USC or UW at large NY6
        Rose Bowl – Utah
        Alamo – UW or USC
        Holiday – Oregon
        Vegas – UCLA/Or State
        Sun Bowl – Oregon State/UCLA
        LA Bowl – Wazzu

      • I don’t recall what discretion the Holiday bowl has in selecting a team, but it seems like it’s in their interest to invite OSU over UCLA and its apathetic fan base if they can. Bring in OSU and its recently enthusiastic fan base to spend money and leave.

        • They do have a prefer not to repeat clause. It’s been reported UCLA is out of the Holiday bowl running this year even if they didn’t play in last year’s game.

      • The loser of the PAC-12 title game cannot go to the Vegas bowl since that is where the championship game is played. There is a clause against it.

Wilner reported on that a few weeks ago. If Utah loses they will not be going to the Vegas bowl. If USC loses I would imagine they’ll prob still wind up in a NY6 game.

Vegas and Holiday bowls alternate picks each year. This year the Vegas bowl picks first after the Alamo.

Michigans Cade McNamara enters transfer portal. Grad transfer has 2 years left. Led Michigan to a conference title last year and was benched for the other guy this year.
Anybody interested in a Jim Harbaugh rejected qb?

I’m not sure about him. He is from Nevada though, may be anting to come back out west…

  3. If forgot to mention it but there were a bunch of alumni at the game yesterday. Quizz was there, Nashon Wright got the alumni spotlight and a number of others.

  4. If the Vegas Bowl comes down to a decision between UCLA and OSU, there’s no way they’ll choose OSU, right? Too much money to be made by having Los Angeles area fans travel to Vegas.
Although, I’m pretty certain OSU fans would buy more tickets than UCLA fans based on UCLA’s sorry home attendance this season, plus OSU should hold a higher ranking in all 3 polls.
Oh, and screw UCLA. They’re leaving the conference anyway. Send them to El Paso

I really wish the fan that got punched would press charges otherwise Johnson is essentially not going to be punished. Is he a pro prospect? If so I hope it really hurts his draft stock and costs him a lot of money.

Interesting that UO announced they are “investigating” but there has been no follow up. I’m guessing that the homer “journalist” that cover the ducks won’t be following up on this.

  6. Anyone remember how many fans traveled to the Fiesta Bowl? Seems like I remember 35k. The Alamo? Vegas? I would think it would be a good amount to holiday or vegas this year with a shot at a 10 win season.

I am now seeing projections for the Sun Bowl vs UNC.

That would be a difficult, but awesome, matchup. If UNC wins the ACC we could see Clemson.

  8. Ok, I am seriously fucking confused. The Sun Bowl website lists the Holiday bowl with the 2nd pick (after CFP, Rose, NY6). I had thought that the Vegas and Holiday swapped the 3/4 picks every other year but am not finding that information anywhere.

    http://sunbowl.org/the_sun_bowl_game/team_selection_process

But the LVRJ says Vegas gets the 2nd pick. Which bowl picks first Vegas or Holiday?????

    Pac-12

The Las Vegas Bowl gets the second pick of Pac-12 teams. The conference champion is automatically selected to the Rose Bowl, unless it makes the College Football Playoff, in which case the second-best team in the Pac-12 heads to Pasadena, California.

The Alamo Bowl has priority next, but can pass over a school with a better record if it played in the Alamo Bowl during the previous season. The Las Vegas Bowl takes the best remaining team.

    https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/football/las-vegas-bowl/countdown-to-the-las-vegas-bowl-could-it-be-lsu-oregon-2650970/

I did find where the loser of the Pac-12 title game cannot go to the Vegas bowl. In order to avoid that scenario, the Vegas and Holiday bowls would swap picks.

Of note: The Pac-12 included a caveat in its selection process that prevents the loser of the Pac-12 championship game, which is in Las Vegas, from returning for the Las Vegas Bowl a few weeks later. If necessary to avoid that scenario, the Holiday would swap spots with Las Vegas in the selection process.

    https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/05/28/hotline-mailbag-pac-12-bowl-lineup-for-2021-fans-in-the-stands-kelly-vs-harbaugh-heltons-bar-and-more/

    So which is it???

    1. CFP/Rose/NY6
    2. Alamo
    3. Vegas? Holiday?
    4. Holiday? Vegas?
    5. Sun
    6. LA
    7. ESPN hot garbage

FWIW the LVRJ projects Oregon St vs Leach and Miss State

    https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/football/las-vegas-bowl/las-vegas-bowl-projection-oregon-state-mississippi-state-2684178/

    • I’m no expert on this. Sounds like for Las Vegas we need USC to win the Pac12 title and get the playoff nod. Then UW backs into the Rose Bowl as #2. Utah would have 4 losses and also is not an option for Vegas because of playing in the title game.

From there, I think oregon/UCLA/OSU/Utah get chosen to play in 1 of the Alamo/Holiday/LasVegas bowls because of having the same number of wins(despite Utah having 4 losses) And the choice is made based on matchup potential as well as geography.

Utah isnt eligible to return to Vegas after playing in the Pac12 title game. So you would think UCLA to Holiday would make sense geographically. Alamo is considered a bigger stage bowl game than Vegas, so I could see oregon going back there.

Utah really could get screwed by playing in the Pac12 title game if they lose. They may fall down to tue Sun Bowl.

Saw that DTR(who is from the Vegas area) may sit out UCLA’s bowl game to prep for the NFL. Hope he does and makes the decision easy for the Vegas bowl to go with OSU.

But I fully expect OSU to get a shitty draw just because they are perceived as the small school and not an attractive matchup.

    • That’s pretty confusing,

But let’s say USC wins. This is how I see it playing out, it all comes down to who Vegas likes.

      CFP – USC
      Rose – UW
Alamo – Utah – Oregon was here last year, so I think they will not get picked again.
      Vegas bowl – OSU
Holiday Bowl – Oregon (The San Diego newspaper says Holiday selects after the Vegas Bowl this year and UCLA will not be selected, so by default Oregon falls here)
      Sun – UCLA
      LA Bowl – WSU

All of this is dependent on where the Beavs rank in the final CFP rankings. They should jump UCLA and that can make a strong case for the Beavs to be picked for Vegas.

      San Diego newspaper
      https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/college/story/2022-11-24/sdccu-holiday-bowl-watch-acc-pac-12-notre-dame-utah-oregon

Lots of scenarios out there even with just one game left,
If Alamo picks Utah and Vegas takes Oregon, Beavs will go to the Holiday bowl since UCLA is not eligible.

Ideal scenario – Utah plays close but comes up short to USC. Doesn’t lose much ground in the rankings. Alamo picks them.

      • I’m with you on most of this.

Yes, if USC wins they’re in the CFP and the Rose would most likely take UW. Then to me it gets dicey. The Alamo could choose between OSU, Oregon, Utah and UCLA. Yes Oregon played in the Alamo bowl last year. However it may depend on the opponent. If it’s say, Texas? That’s a compelling TV market wet dream matchup and UT fans would probably fill that stadium.

        Alamo is the linchpin imo.

If they take Utah? Well then Vegas would have their pick between UO, OSU and UCLA.

If this scenario DOES in fact play out? I don’t think the Beavs would fall farther than the Holiday Bowl.

Lots can happen though. Still have some games to play.

        Another thought…..

Let’s say Utah does beat USC and head to Pasadena. COULD the Pac 12 get two teams (USC and UW) in NY6 games assuming USC stays in the top 12? I’m unclear on that so I am claiming ignorance.

      • I would love that scenario. Keep Utah up higher and push oregon down as far as possible. Holiday Bowl plays an ACC team while Vegas plays SEC. Give me Mike Leach’s air raid vs OSU ground game any day.
        Would be an entertaining matchup.

        • I would take either Vegas or San Diego in a heartbeat over Hell Paso. I think pretty much all of us would.

Personally, I would prefer San Diego. Later bowl game and a little more extra practice time.

Vegas bowl was supposed to move to after Christmas but for some reason has not happened yet. Not sure why.

          • San Diego has good food, easy flight…Vegas is a hole IMO.

I like the extra practice time and later start time too.

I think for the “local” economy, the Beavers would be the better draw. You bring enthusiastic fans from out of state, they come in and spend money, and leave. UCLA fans don’t care about attending in person even at home games, and even then you’re circulating mostly(?) California people in state.

But maybe they figure UCLA has some better draw for TV, which I would understand. The BIG10 wants UCLA and USC for their tv market, not their fan bases.

      • Bill, just saw your link. Thank you! That’s what I thought and was looking for. So yes, Vegas and Holiday bowls swap that swap every other year. This year the Vegas bowl picks after the Alamo.

“After the NY6 slots are filled, the Holiday Bowl gets the second pick after the Alamo Bowl in the Pac-12 (note that in odd years, the Holiday picks third after the Alamo and Las Vegas bowls).”

        • Wait. I think I have that backwards. The Holiday picks after the Alamo since this is an even year.

          Math is hard.

          2. Alamo
          3. Holiday
          4. Vegas

I’d that is the case then I think the LVRJ is probably correct in their projection.

I like OSU and ND in the Holiday Bowl. Chance to go 3-0 against them. Good ratings and exposure.

I actually think OSU, 2-0 against ND, should seek a 3 game non-con schedule against them, one game in Corvallis, for best of 5. Its a good risk:reward in my opinion, particularly with OSU’s current trajectory…of course those games would be several years out…

        • I’d rather see Holiday or Sun Bowl. The team gets two extra weeks of practice, which are crucial.

Las Vegas has always seemed like a low quality game.

I have it on good authority but cannot verify (don’t get the channel) that ESPNU has a replay of the Civil War on now; early in the second half.

  10. Also saw this whilst researching earlier. The Vegas bowl may swap start times with the New Mexico Bowl should the NFL flex the Raiders/Patriots game to an earlier time slot the following day. This would move the Vegas bowl kick off to 11:30am PT.

Should find out this week. The Raiders suck and I fully expect the NFL to flex that game out of SNF.

    https://fbschedules.com/las-vegas-bowl-new-mexico-bowl-prepared-to-flex-times-and-networks/

  11. Watching the highlights of the Civil War, noticed on the Duck’s fumbled punt, their three deep blockers are holding hands and moving to the right for their right footed kicker. Looks like they’re line dancing or something, and #18 from OSU comes in clean for the tackle. Hilarious, somebody needs to turn that into a meme….

People here have been wanting the Beavers to get back that swagger. Despite the flags, Cooper Jr. and Austin never quit smiling and playing. Lolohea had some fun when he took down Nix…

That game is up there with the double OT win, the ’07 James Rodgers fly sweep, The Harrington Cry, the Doctor Pick 6…

I thought Colletto scored a TD when it was 34-24, it really looked like the ball crossed the goal line before his knee was down. Then they had to go again with the Gulbranson air fumble and score. I’m kind of surprised they didn’t fuck Fenwick out of his first down at the end (which he clearly had).

I think Lanning’s nickname should be TOOD. “Turn Over On Downs.” 0-5 for the game on fourth downs. He thinks he’s got ‘tude, but the guy’s a worse gambler than Smith.

    • Found the game on Roku in the ESPN OnDemand section and watched it last night. that Colletto play stuck out to me too. They called a TD but then used replay to overturn it and say he was 1/2 yard short. Didn’t affect the outcome as Gulbranson scored on the next play(fortunately), but I have no idea how they could watch that replay and then call back the TD by 1.5 feet. There’s just no way the video showed conclusive evidence, which is their supposed standard. Terrible use of replay again.

      • Yeah, that’s two terrible, indefensible spots.

The Beavers made enough clear plays that the conference couldn’t take it away from them. I thought they would call a phantom PI on Nix’s last pass…

They also picked up an unusual number of flags that likely would have been unsportsmanlike or similar.

      • Agreed. Coletto’s elbow went down when the ball either just crossed the plane, or it was inches short, less than 6. How tf do you back the ball up on that and not move the spot forward on the 3rd down challenge?

Curious about that duck drive in the first half. My picture was pixelated, but sure looked like on that low pass the ball skipped on the turf before the catch. No replay I recall.

          • Not sure who down votes that. Watched the play from the two angles provided in the game replay and the ball is on the turf before he scoops it up. I just don’t get it. Why prop up football “brands” with biased refereeing when it’s time to move on to whichever team(s) is(are) up coming? 9-3 for “the rest” isn’t luck. Is it good to get brands that can’t perform in the post-season to better bowl games?

  13. 15

Great to see Bray extended through 2024. Good balance of program security, and fair to him if a great opportunity comes along. OSU can try to meet a salary offer if he gets a HC or higher paying DC offer. Plus they can evaluate him for consistency and recruiting before making larger offers.

Coming into the CW, the Beavers had the #1 D in the PAC. They gave up yards and points to UO, but Bray has been motivated all year. The USC game was a thing of defensive beauty and OSU held USC 25 points under their season average of 42. But you have to think there have been some special pride in defeating Lanning, the hotshot D coordinator with HC salary and no HC experience at this level.

Well done Coach Bray and well earned.

  14. Anybody else see the “never count out the beavs” sportcenter ad on Facebook? Split screen with Lanning smiling over the 31-10 3rd quarter scoreboard, and the 38-34 final. Pretty sweet actually.

  15. I’m not sure how long Bray has been in PERS but he has got to be close enough to 5.5 years to best that he’d be crazy not to stick around the year or two to lock that in. It’ll be like 40-60k a year in retirement.

    • Thornton was the guy who made the non-catch that was ruled a catch and the catch on the subsequent play which made the non-catch non-reviewable. This was after the non-facemask on Nix who then accosted the ref. But the look on Thorntons face said it all: “this is BS.” Figure he’d rather win on merits than some arbitrary application of the rules to maximize league or TV $$$.

  16. Also formerly top 40 recruit Hudson Card from Texas has entered the portal. Looks like he has 3 years. He got bumped out by Ewers at Texas. Sounds like he was some kind of Texas high school legend…only has a handful of college starts.

    • Yeah, it is nuts right now. There is definitely some talent (on paper) out there and no reason OSU can’t bring in someone to compete at the QB position.

        • 2
          2

Not that far fetched to think an NIL ask before last season could have been the difference between OSU going 9-3 and OSU being in the NCAA Playoffs right now. Might have been money worth spending if the right QB came along.

          • 2
            1

For 5 mil, nil? No thanks. One dumb kid is NOT worth a 5 mil buy in. Shit, Barnes just paid the architect of the defense, 600k.

          • Yes and no. Caleb Williams or Penix would have had us in the playoff. I still think that’s a bad investment and no way to build a program, though. It’s a huge gamble (just look at the JT Daniels saga).

          • One of those guys for sure, but I don’t think it even needed to be that caliber of QB. It would have been interesting to see how Daniels would have performed vs how it turned out at WV.

          • It wasn’t 5 million lol they were joking. I think Daniels dad was asking for 300k. I think thats worth it to go to the playoffs. I don’t know how much the school makes for getting in but it might offset the NIL.

    • I do wonder if there is a good reason some of these highly-rated QBs couldn’t get playing time at the school they left. It’s not like some of the Quack QBs like Slough and Burgmeister became superstars. Look at Daniels getting benched at WVU. Just saying these coaches aren’t all idiots. The transfer portal is not a sure thing unless it’s a proven player.

  17. I saw Cullen Fite decommitted from ASU but it sounds like we don’t have room to bring in a DL at this time. I’m sure there will be players leaving though that will change the numbers for position groups.

  18. 2
    1

I love the depth of the program and it is interesting that the missing piece is now qb, perhaps a bit still at DLine. It almost seems like a strategy of playing the long game to steadily build out the depth of the team at multiple positions and then focus on the difference maker at qb. It would be incredible to see Chiles come in as a true freshman and really continue great leadership but drop right into the starting role with dynamic skill set we have asked for forever at OSU.
Maybe try to bring in another transfer just in case but I’m not really sold on the guys who transfer from Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, Penn St.
Funny that half the Big Ten has second string qbs transferring. All those teams already have suspect qb play.

    • 2
      2

It should, but it’s not part of the criteria they need to use for their selection process as far as i can tell.
Matchups/Geography are the main influencers for OSU/UO/UCLA/Utah since they’re all within 1 W of each other.

Also notable, USC is #4, Utah #11 and UW #12. So 6 Pac 12 teams in the top 17 this year, which is pretty impressive all things considered.

“If the Pac-12 champion makes the CFP, the Rose Bowl picks a replacement team (presumably the one with the next-best CFP ranking). The Alamo Bowl gets the next pick, followed by the Holiday Bowl and the Las Vegas Bowl. Those bowls can choose based on their own preference so long as there isn’t more than a one-game difference in conference record between their selection and teams remaining on the board.
Starting with the Sun Bowl, which picks next, the selections are based strictly on conference record. The Jimmy Kimmel Bowl goes next and the Pac-12 also will fill one slot from either the Armed Forces Bowl, First Responder Bowl or Gasparilla Bowl.”

      https://www.latimes.com/sports/ucla/story/2022-11-22/ucla-football-bowl-scenarios

I suspect OSU will get the least attractive bowl of the top 6 teams based on market size and not being ESPN’s darling like UofO

      • “the Pac-12 also will fill one slot from either the Armed Forces Bowl, First Responder Bowl or Gasparilla Bowl.”

Not if USC makes the CFP or NY6. Won’t be enough bowl eligible teams.

        • Agree, I think a 2 loss USC will still get a NY6 at large bid if Utah wins the Pac12(and Rose Bowl spot)
Heisman trophy candidate/Big market/Media Darlings. They’re made for an at large bid.

So then UW is left in the mix for Alamo/Vegas/Holiday/Sun with OSU/UCLA/Ore

          • Agreed. Which means you can probably all but pencil in WSU vs the MWC champion in the LA bowl.

They’re 2 losses behind the next highest team in the PAC-12 standings so they can’t move up.

    • This is a very interesting year for the extra spots of the NY6 bowl games. None of the lesser conferences champs will qualify as in years past (Tulane is closest at #18 but need to be top 12). Independents won’t fill as ND is 8-4 at #21. Which leaves 5 conference champs and 7 spots from among P5 school left.
The following don’t play in their conference championship and will all likely have a spot:
      Alabama
      Ohio St
      Tennessee
      Washington
      Penn St

      Expected conference champs:
      Georgia
      Michigan
      TCU
      USC
      Clemson

This leaves only a handful of teams as options for the final 2 spots. However, SEC has 3, Big10 has 3, ACC has 1, Big12 has 1, Pac12 has 2

IIRC each conference is limited to 3 teams, so the final 2 won’t come from SEC or Big10. ACC possibility is UNC 9-4, FSU 9-3. Big 12 KSt 9-4, Pac12 choice Utah 9-4 or OSU, Oregon, UCLA all 9-3 which means there is a possibility that Pac12 gets another NY6 bid. If the teams that lose their championship game are still considered it could only add back KSU, Utah, UNC all at 9 wins too, assuming favorites win those games. But Beavs could be highest ranked of all teams left after conference championships are over and spots are filled.

The good news to me is that it doesn’t seem likely that the Beavs go to Sun Bowl when they have a real shot at NY6 due to being ranked above everyone but USC, UW and Utah in conference.

  19. Anyone else read or see the oregon punter spit on the center logo before the game? I read it somewhere. Sounds like karma worked itself out on that one.

  20. Well, that was a bit surprising to get ranked ahead of Oregon. Benefit of the recency bias just a little.

But now, there is no team behind the Beavs that can pass them in the next week. LSU is most likely to lose and then drop down. K State and Clemson could drop a lot if they lose big. Don’t think Utah can drop behind the Beavs with a loss since they own the head to head.

Damn that #15 CFP ranking is nice. Perception has value, and if the right teams lose this weekend, and lose big, OSU could potentially move up a bit more.

If the improved ranking results in a decent bowl, they need to show up this year and I think they will. QB play has to be good+ or they’ll need another monster run game. Hopefully BG will have about a month to be throwing in practice. He seems to be(?) reading the D fine and adjusting pre-snap. I’d think that would be the hard part and throwing the ball would be the easy part, but… 3-4 weeks to improve.

Some nice accolades being posted on Beavers football twitter:

    https://twitter.com/beaverfootball

Any word on Martinez’s knee injury?

    • Rooting for all of the favorites this weekend to improve the Beavs ranking like you said.

Crazy to think that if they win the bowl game, they’ll most likely be top 10 at season’s end.

Also seeing some articles about the Beavs in the LV bowl. Seems like any bowl is better than the Sun but the LV is on Dec 17th so less practices than would normally be alotted a bowl team if I’m not mistaken

      • “Crazy to think that if they win the bowl game, they’ll most likely be top 10 at season’s end.”

That would be crazy. I honestly don’t think with the QB play and kicking their a top 10 team. Defense is very good (think how much better their numbers would look with a good QB that put the other team in position of having to play from behind consistently), running game is great, ST coverage and returns(!) have been trending upward.

Top 15 at season’s end would be pretty impressive and realistic given their QB shortcomings.

      • Vegas would be the worst option. There’d be little time for the team to practice and for the coaches to go on recruiting trips.

An up and coming program like OSU needs a late bowl game.

  22. As much as we complained about the non-conference schedule this year, I think it actually did benefit us with Boise and Fresno both ending up as top 50 teams. The rankings like Sagarin and Colley are giving us SOS credit compared to UW, Utah, and UCLA, who had cake schedules outside the PAC. Even though the traditional polls don’t correlate strongly to these rankings, I think they have some impact on the CFP rankings.

Is it lazy reporting and making bowl predictions off of past perception to have the Beavs land in the Sun bowl for most of these sites then?
I think there is no way they get passed over by 3 different bowls if the Beavs are ranked at 12 after this weekend, and continue to be placed ahead of UO and UCLA, and possibly a 4 loss Utah.
I expect the Beavs to be in the Holiday or Alamo and they deserve to be with no apologies. Toughest non conference schedule, gets them the nod.

      2

I think they’re being realistic. As long as the bowls have a choice, they’ll choose market size and bigger name program over the Beavs every time. To the bowl selection committee, it’s essentially a 4 way tie with no tie breakers, so it’s a pickem.

        1

Yep. It’s based on matchup, TV eyeballs and how large of a fan base that’s willing to travel.

As stated, a dog and pony show the Beavs aren’t going to win many of.

All I know is if USC loses Friday, then it’s a big ol’ shit show. We definitely need them to win, for the good of the conference. I just hope the Heisman hype hasn’t gone to Williams’ head.

Anyone up on all the commotion with the Rose Bowl? Trying to follow it seems like tOSU is trying to get out of Rose Bowl and force changes to NY6 games. Or Rose Bowl Committee dragging it’s feet on CFP changes. Or ??

    • The Rose Bowl wants to be in the NY6 bowl rotation, which is what will be used for the expanded CFP. But the RB also wants to keep its coveted timeslot on Jan 1 for the years that it is not part of the NY6. I’m sure there are many other details in the contract negotiations, but I don’t see how the RB would skip out on being in the NY6.

        2

        Thanks.

That makes sense based on what I read. All the articles I was reading they were throwing in minutiae and discussion of this years teams, I was wondering about the long term.

Was imagining the Beavs finally making it to the Rose Bowl in a year or two and luck of the beavs the Rose Bowl is the new Cheez-its Bowl where they play the 5th best ACC team.

    • 10

I read he refused to play once he wasn’t going to be the starter. Sounds like the family had demands. That’s what happens when promises are made. Anyone here remember WR Isaah Crocker who was suppose to commit to the Beavs until the 11th hour a few years back and then went to the ducks? Played in four games this year and had zero catches. The gear must be so worth it.

      • I assume that’s the fallout from the Cristobal style of recruiting. They promise these kids the world to get them to sign. NIL $$ probably only makes it worse, HC promises they’ll be a starter, they throw a fat stack of cash at them which only serves to inflate their sense of “value”. Then they actually have to put in some effort and earn their snaps, or they’re just not as good as the guy in front of them.

    • Thank you for putting in the work to count up the scholarships. with an 85 scholarship limit, this allows 8 open scholarships for current walk-ons, transfers from the transfer portal and gray shirts who sign on after the LOI signing periods.

What I would like to see is the following transfers come in:

      1 QB
      1 DL/DE
      1 LB
      1 or 2 DB’s(CB and/or S)
and the remaining 3-4 scholarships go to walk-on players.

      • Would help their cause if a RB(log jam) and QB(replace with transfer) transfer out.
OLB/DT/DE all need some players to step up or get new bodies via transfer.
And I do think they’re looking at Juco for DB help currently
Need to find a good punter option too. He was a weapon this year and will be a loss

        • Don’t they still have green?

Does Gebbia still have another year? It would be nice to have him for depth but could maybe be best if he retired and becomes a GA to free up a scholarship.

Will Hodgins come back for another year?

        • Loecher certainly was a weapon this season. Would love to get a Johnny Hecker style punter though where we can throw in some fake punts/fake field goals occasionally. I remember when Riley ran a fake FG one year and it was highly successful.

      • Jacob Ferenczi was announced with the seniors on Saturday, even though he wasn’t. I don’t know what the story is there, but he greyshirted in 2019, so he was really only a redshirt sophomore counting the COVID year.

    • If that’s the right count, Beavs have a lot of roster flexibility. I’d like to see them bring in more high school recruits to help build a foundation, but will have to bring transfers in at QB, DL, and DB.

Some guys will get awarded scholarships in the winter term as well.

Edit – Buckles is no longer with the team

  26. Has anyone donated to the Dam NIL collective? I want to make a donation, but I haven’t had the time to vet them to make sure it is legitimate. I don’t want 90% of my donation to go towards “administrative” costs – I want it to go to players.

  27. Nick Daschel hinting at good news for OSU bowl prospects will be coming soon, which means DTR is skipping uclas bowl, so Vegas is now more likely option for osu

  28. Butterfield from Ducks in xfer portal. Such a high recruit. Hopefully this success has the Beavs poised to grab a decent xfer qb so we can give Chiles a year or so to mature and get used to system. Really excited for him but he’ll be 17 and missed a huge chunk of last season. Seems like sitting at least 1 year would be highly beneficial but what do I know.

  29. Florida’s QB Jalen Kitna (son of NFL’s Jon Kitna) was arrested today for possession of kiddy porn. Has been suspended indefinitely….
Wonder if any bowl is going to want to touch Florida now? Hard to have televise a bowl game and ignore the elephant in the room

‘A source told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Wednesday that OSU’s bowl floor “is the Vegas Bowl and the ceiling is probably the Alamo Bowl.” The Sun Bowl has been told Oregon State is unlikely to be available when it selects a Pac-12 team.’

        • 2
          1

I’ve been surprised with the chatter leading up to today. Seems with Beavs Bowl history they’d be a desirable choice. Top 15 team, 9-3 record, big win vs Ducks, almost beat USU, long time since they’ve been good, dedicated fan base, etc. While UCLA has the TV market, and Ducks have a brand and national following, neither fan based will be as excited at Beav fans. I think attendance is most critical for bowl games vs TV markets. My hunch is Beavs get Holiday bowl since they’ve never been to this bowl. I also think Alamo is very interested based on how well we traveled 10 years ago and the Damien Martinez connection. Vegas is the least likely IMO and Sun Bowl is out of the question.

          • 1
            1

Talked to someone in AD this evening, apparently lots of conversations with Alamo folks, they seem to be very interested. Or they’re good at schmoozing and don’t want to piss off schools.

    • That’s a good add from a school that produces a few high caliber players each year. Any relation to chaz ah you? Probably because it’s a small island and family’s are tight. He was looking real good before he had to medically retire.

    • Nice, good get. Alot of football players in that Ah-You family tree. No idea if he’s mission bound, but hos older brother Miki didnt take a mission before playing at UW a few years ago, so I guess there’s a chance Leonard could do the same?
Anybody know what Miki is doing these days? Think he was class of 2018 and his twitter still says he’s at UW, but i dont see him on the current roster.

    • Nice. Has Smith gone out of his way to avoid mission guys? I don’t recall a lot of them since he took over…
I think that would be a good strategy. Way too much time and resources to put into someone if you’re unsure of their situation years out. Might as well just recruit them when they’re nearing the end of their mission.

  30. 3
    1

Would be nice to be the destination spot for the islands as they produce a handful of d1 standouts each year. They really connect with other polynesians more than any other nationality or race. Need coach Legi to step up there. That’s probably a lot of the reason Utah has been able to compete so well. Their roster is about 1/3 poly. They’re built to play the game with their size and speed.

I think the Holiday Bowl offers the best combination of travel convenience, airfare, host city quality for amenities (food, attractions, entertainment, weather)…the only drawback is playing in a baseball stadium with poor sight lines for football. Its too bad there’s not still a good NFL stadium there to play in.

San Diego might also offer some recruiting benefits, particularly if SDSU gets an invitation to join the PAC.

Alamo seems too expensive, Vegas is just unattractive in my opinion, particularly compared to San Diego. BUT, I know many could/would enjoy Vegas.

    • Cause it’s all about you ObjCritic. ;) Any bowl game is better than El Paso Sun Bowl. Would love a rematch against Texas in the Alamo Bowl from 2012. The matchup against an SEC team, Mississippi State, seems intriguing as well with the Vegas Bowl. The Holiday Bowl is against an ACC team like Duke or UNC is intriguing as well.

These bowl projections came out this morning on this site: https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/2022-college-football-bowl-projections

Alamo Bowl (Dec. 29): Texas vs. UCLA
Las Vegas Bowl (Dec. 17): Oregon State vs. Mississippi State
Holiday Bowl (Dec. 28): Utah vs. North Carolina
Sun Bowl (Dec. 30): Oregon vs. Wake Forest
L.A. Bowl (Dec. 17): Washington State vs. Boise State

Well the sun bowl is definitely in play but I would love to see the ducks land there. 3 weeks ago they were still talking like the zeros could make the CFP. I dont see them dropping to the Sun Bowl but it would be a nice topper to the Civil War win.

      • If DTR doesn’t play there is no way in hell UCLA is going to San Antonio.

BTW if one looks at the holiday bowl Facebook page (account isn’t required) you’ll see they posted a poll last night about which game we as fans would like to see. ALL of them included Oregon. Only the ACC teams were changed.

Probably tells you where their side is buttered.

  32. Is UCLA QB Dorian-Thompson a legitimate early round pick in the NFL? Sounds like there’s speculation he might just skip the bowl game and train for the draft. I’m not familiar with his body of work at UCLA. I know he’s mobile and athletic, but I kind of assumed he was a good+ college QB and not necessarily a high potential pro prospect. Nothing wrong with being a good DI college QB, I just am not sure how his skills might translate to the next level.

    • He had a very good season. He has mobility to extend plays and get yards on his own. He posses a strong arm and the biggest thing is that he improved his decision making. With all that said he has a lot of talent and I can see him being drafted around the 3rd to 4th round. Idk if I see him succeeding at the next level tho. Took him a long time to get the college game down so I don’t really see him adjusting well to the pros.

  33. 6
    1

My preference is for whatever bowl matchup is the most winnable. Having the highest possible ranking at the end of the season is the most important thing long-term.

Let’s be honest, there’s no real difference in prestige between the Alamo Bowl and Sun Bowl outside a small group of fans that actually know the bowl priority order.

      • LV Bowl pays $2.9 Mil
        Sun Bowl pay $4.5 Mil
        Holiday Bowl pays $6.5 Mil
        Alamo Bowl pays $8.2 Mil

But it doesn’t really matter which team goes to each Bowl since the money is evenly distributed in the conference.

The Rose Bowl is a contract Bowl. The contract amount is $66Mil, but Pac12 ADs have that built into their budget every year.

The conference will receive an additional $6 Mil if USC makes the playoffs. There is no additional payout, other than expenses, for playing in the championship game.

      • “NCAA rules allow bowl teams to practice or hold other athletic activities up to four hours per day or 20 hours per week between the end of the regular season and a bowl game. While coaches often refer to the “15 extra practices” that come with a bowl invitation, there is no specific limit to the number of practices a team can hold during bowl preparation.”

Per this article from 2016 https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2016/12/21/additional-practices-create-balancing-act-for-bowl-teams/95720950/

So the LV bowl, on Dec 17th, wouldn’t allow for much practice time vs the other bowls which are closer to the end of the month.

  34. From the twitter feed:

    2024 4* TE Wyatt Hook commits to Beavers;

Someone calling themselves “big game boomer” ranks OSU student section tops in the PAC. They did seem extra involved in games this year. Coach Perkins points it out and thanks them.

    Pickem games are up, fyi.
    Games start tomorrow.
Laat year CBS didnt include bowl games in their pickem options, so good chance this is the final week.

  36. Beavs land a 2024 TE. 1st of the 24 class. Wyatt Hook out of CA. His Twitter bio says 4* but I haven’t had a chance to do much research to see what all he’s been up to. At this point, I think our TE group has been the most consistent and on point thru Smith’s tenure so in Brian we trust. Lol

  37. was looking at flight options yesterday. i don’t fly much so wanted to check if i’m missing something with Spirit airlines. Are they a big step behind Alaska in terms of quality? I can see they charge extra for carry on baggage, but outside of that am i missing something? It’s only a 2 hour flight, so seems like anything would tolerable, outside of the plane plummeting to the ground.

      • Arguably the worst airline in the business. Trust me, it’s worth spending a little more flying a more reputable airline, even if it is only a 2 hour flight.

    • I like flying Southwest airlines myself. they don’t charge for any bags carry on or checked. Their on-time rate is pretty good. One of their hubs is Vegas as well.

    • “seems like anything would tolerable, outside of the plane plummeting to the ground”

I used to know a gal that worked for Alaska Airlines. After she told me much of what she did about their maintenance and operations, I will NEVER fly Alaska.

But I’m sure most of these low cost carriers operate in the same way.

    • Good news for the conference. I’d say it’s good for a media deal as well. PAC12 champ is in automatically, which gives the PAC12 title game relevance every year.

    • Saw that coming. At least we know early so we can recruit accordingly. Small chance he decides to come back tho but I doubt it. Hopefully he’ll go out of conference.

      • 5
        5

Why did you see that coming? BG has been freaking terrible and Chiles is a true freshman…am I missing something?

As far as I can tell and if I were calling the shots, Nolan would be the strong favorite to start in 2023.

And at this point I really, really hope we’re landing at least one decent transfer QB for next year.

        • 8
          2

BG went 5-1 since he started. During the CW, he got the team in the right plays with his audibles. He’s a game manager. He was getting better and better each week. He was 6-13 with 2 interceptions against the #9 team in the country. Go back and watch the last 19 minutes of the CW. BG went up to the line and changed the play each time based on what he saw on the defense lining up. We had more success running the ball against their fast, lighter, taller defenders than we did passing the ball. This is why you saw Oregon start folding near the goalline. They were getting tired at the point of attack and they knew they couldn’t out muscle Oregon State’s OL/TE package. Lindgren finally did what we had been calling to do all season long “RTDFB-Run The Dam Fu^^^ng BALL!”

We have an awesome game manager in BG, but his ability to throw on target to the open receiver still needs a ton of work. BG is only a Rs. Freshman this year. He has game experience, but I agree having a RS. Junior or RS. Sr grad transfer would be beneficial to compliment and push BG to improve his passing game. Who knows, maybe Aidan will torch our defense in the Spring and push BG to be better next year? This is why we have coaches who are paid millions of $’s who interact and observe these players day in and day out. Work to be done, but build from your recruiting, not from the Transfer Portal.

          • 3
            5

Wins aren’t a QB stat. Maybe he audibles well and knows the playbook but as a thrower he’s atrocious.

You can’t be a game manager when you’re constantly throwing rancid picks and missing wide open receivers. We won with an incredible D and a strong run game…despite BG and not because of him.

          • He’s a Redshirt Freshman this year! He didn’t get the same amount of reps in Spring or Fall camp as Chance Nolan did to prepare for the season. So how can you expect the timing, vision, accuracy, etc for a passing QB to be elite in 6 games? Also, I recall Sean Mannion and Derek Anderson throwing a lot of picks with a strong defense. Are you saying we won with a solid defense those years despite 2 NFL caliber QB’s?

          • 3
            1

“You can’t be a game manager when you’re constantly throwing rancid picks and missing wide open receivers”

How about Chancey 4 picks, hate him too? Nolan’s last 6 quarters he threw 6 ints.

          • He is not an atrocious thrower. That’s just dumb. But you definitely could say he’s a bad decision maker which improves with time. He has the arm to be a good QB in the pac but needs to improve decision making and pocket presence.

          • You can’t be a game manager when the coaching staff is so terrified of you throwing the ball that you don’t attempt a single pass in the last quarter and a half. He is very bad and why they lost to UW and almost lost to Oregon. They won games this season cause the running game was spectacular and defense was one of it not the best defense in the conference.

          • 4
            3

Almost lost to Oregon? Really? Ok, is it possible they didn’t throw the ball against Oregon in the 2nd half wasn’t because of the Interceptions, but because our run game was clicking like it was last season? The average starting position on the last 4 possessions in the game was the Oregon 35 yard line. You pound the rock with that kind of field position to wear down the opponent’s defense, rest your defense, and assure you run down the clock all at the same time.

BG audibled into plays that worked. He didn’t audible into passing plays to try to win the game with his arm. They left it up to the team to beat the ucks, not BG’s arm. How many times have we complained Lindgren gets pass happy and abandons the run game this season?! The ONE GAME they ram it down the opponents throat we win and you’re complaining BG didn’t throw enough?

Another thing, I mentioned it before the UW game, if BG has to throw on the run, he will have bad throws. He is a pocket passer and cannot throw on the run. Guess what, that’s what he was being asked to do with 40 mph wind gusts. So ya, I knew it was going to be hard for BG to win us that game. Losing by 3 to the best passing team in the conference next to USC, I would say this team did exceptionally well this year. This team is so close to doing what Mike Riley couldn’t do, and that’s compete for a conference title. This team is closer to a Rose Bowl magical season than they were ending the 1999 year with a loss in the Oahu Bowl. JS is now 2-3 against Oregon, 2-1 in Reser and 0-2 in Autzen.

          • @Beavers4Life:

Agree that the team did great this year. Major props to coaches, particularly Bray and Coach M. I just think we did it in spite of the dude under center and that QB was our worst starting position (and I’d argue by a lot). Nolan played awesome for the first 3 games and then imploded vs USC and Utah so I’d include him in that same assessment.

Also agree that it was awesome to see us commit to the run in the CW! Just tend to think it came from the coaches being afraid of BG. Love the result but don’t love the reason for it. Gulbranson’s 2 picks were awful and he only gained 60 yards in 13 attempts…

vs UW, as well as USC, the defense played out of their minds. The team as a whole played really, really great. BG was a disaster though…it’s not as if he needed to carry the team. He needed to be competent and he just wasn’t.
12/17 for 87 yards and a fumble is just offensive futility and it’s nowhere near acceptable for a P12 QB.

          • 2
            1

Yeah Chance’s picks were awful, no doubt. And 100% he cost us the USC W. But just as obviously Gulbranson cost us the UW W (no picks but complete inability to move the ball).

No one is or was calling Nolan a game manager. He could and did push the ball successfully at times, made a lot of big plays, and played brilliantly for stretches. If you’ve got an aggressive QB you’re going to have some picks and that can be OK if he’s also throwing TDs and making great throws.

Gulbranson has severely struggled to move the ball or get anything going in the pass game. That can work with a strong D and run game but only if you protect the ball. Terrible picks on top of offensive ineffectiveness is just inexcusable.

          • Also though, to be clear: my main point is that BG was terrible, not that Nolan was good.

Either way I’d have really wanted a transfer QB to come in and save us from the QB disaster we’ve been living through…I’m just surprised because I’d assumed Nolan would have the inside track to start for ’23.

        • Well if you follow this site for example Nolan was awesome then was terrible then BG was awesome and then terrible. You mix in the transfer portal and Nolan thinking his starting job might be lost you would have to be blind not to see this.

          • BG was never awesome this year lol. Not even close. At his very best he was a low ceiling but serviceable game manager.

Nolan had wild fluctuations. At his best (Ie 2021 @USC) he was flawless and played like an all-American. At his worst he was an utter train wreck.

          • Nolan played well vs usc last year but he wasn’t flawless. Lol. Had 3 tds and 2 picks if I’m not mistaken. Great win and he was a big part of it but he wasn’t flawless and in general, he wasn’t good vs p12 teams. His best games were the early season matchups vs Montana State, Cal poly, Hawaii, etc. Once p12 play started, he wasn’t even an avg qb. Remember his 2 games vs UW and WSU where he threw for 120 yards in 2 games combined?!

    • Aka, Chance Nolan enters the Transfer Portal. With Aidan Chiles coming in, looks like he figures he will get buried on the depth chart next year?

lots of youth at QB on the Oregon State Roster for 2023 thus far. Do you go out and try and get a QB with 1-2 years of eligibility left, or do you stick with the current roster of QB’s for next season?

      Fr. Aidan Chiles
      RS-Fr. Travis Throckmorton
      RS-Fr. Dom Montiel (Walk-on)
      Rs-So. Ben Gulbranson

      • You get a transfer, preferably with 2 or more years left. Competition will take care of rest. You can’t have only 3 scholarship QBs on the roster.

Btw, i was looking at players our coaches have recently started following. Lots of transfer QBs/CBs and some Linebackers.
So they’re definitely looking at players who become available as they hit the portal

      • If you guys think Chile’s will come in and be the saviour u better hold your breath. Not saying he can’t and won’t but to think for instance this season would be better with a true frosh I think is naive. Very few freshman can come in and perform at a high level. Even when they do its streaky and people tend to focus on the potential rather than their consistency. If we’re hoping to build on this season they need a QB that can be a bonified starter as thats what cost this team games. With chance leaving we need a transfer for sure that can preferably pass up BG or at the least push him and provide depth.

    • 10
      4

      This ^^^

I think we saw Chance’s true colors. Others can correct me if I’m wrong, but in every televised game since his injury, I don’t recall seeing him once on the sideline support BG or the team.

We may have lost a QB, but we didn’t lose a leader. Best of luck to him.

    • I’m actually a little confused about who would even want him. I guess there are enough teams out there that he can start somewhere but even if you are like a Wyoming level program, is Nolan something that excites you?

      • 1
        1

At Wyoming sure. He played well vs non-pac 12 teams. It’s when real competition started that he was pretty awful. His stats thru 3 or 4 games last year and this year were great. Crap once pac 12 starts.

  38. 4
    1

Now the QB position becomes very attractive to transfer QBs. They only have beat out GB and when they look at his stats, they’ll be eyeing the job before they even decide to transfer. Beavs will have to pick up a transfer QB to fill out the room with Nolan transferring, hopefully it’ll be one who improves the room.

Other programs will negative recruit against the Beavs by saying they don’t use the QB and run the ball only. JS will have to sell on prior QB results like Browning at UW and Luton here. Also NIL will go against the Beavs pretty hard.

Was it NiceBeaver who saw JS follow JT Daniels before he entered the transfer portal? Wonder if we can pick up clues again of who they are targeting.

  39. The Nolan situation is weird to me. If he was healthy enough to play, then I have to assume he would have played some in the CW after BG threw two picks. If he’s not healthy enough to play, then who’s going to want him?

  40. 2
    1

I think as others have said and alluded to – it’s probably more a personality / leadership / intangibles thing than an on-field thing. And maybe his extreme streakiness is related to a lack of work ethic and preparation too.

  41. The expansion of the CFP to 12 teams does help the Pac12 with the fact that we’ll get at least one team in the playoffs every year. But it also reduces the revenue from the Rose Bowl, since the RB will be included in the CFP rotation. Likely in those years there won’t be a Pac12-Big10 game AND a CFP game in the RB, so Pac12 won’t get that contracted $66 mil.

  42. 4
    1

I guess I have to give Daschel some credit, he said over a month ago that whoever did not get the starting job would transfer. I’m assuming Nolan was told as much recently. I’m wondering if he’s been healthy for awhile and basically quit the team.

  43. Some clarity from the Holiday bowl………………..

    If USC wins:

The Trojans go to the playoff. Then No. 12 Washington (10-2) would be expected to go to the Rose Bowl. The Alamo Bowl would then choose among Utah, Oregon State, Oregon and No. 17 UCLA (9-3).

Oregon went to the Alamo Bowl last year, so the Ducks aren’t expected to be invited back for a second straight year.

But if Utah is not taken by the Alamo, then the Utes have to go to the Holiday Bowl as the conference runner-up.

    If USC loses:

Then the Trojans fall out of the playoff picture and would be expected to fill an at-large spot in the Cotton Bowl.

Utah goes to the Rose Bowl as the Pac-12 champion and Washington gets invited to the Alamo Bowl.

That leaves Oregon available for the Holiday Bowl.

    Got all that?

I think we need USC to win. But it also appears the Holiday bowl is very high on the ducks and if they are available for them to pick? They will take them.

    Some updates from Utah………………

    If Utah wins

This is simple: the Utes go to the Rose Bowl with a victory.

It’s likely they could face No. 8 Penn State, for a couple reasons.

First, a USC loss could knock it out of CFP contention and elevate No. 5 Ohio State into the CFP to replace the Trojans in the playoff field.

If that happens, Penn State is the next-highest ranked Big Ten team in the CFP rankings.

Second, even if USC wasn’t knocked out of the playoff with a second loss to Utah, it’s unlikely that the Rose Bowl would prefer a rematch of Utah and Ohio State this year.

The Buckeyes beat the Utes 48-45 in last year’s Rose Bowl, and the Rose Bowl could prefer to select Penn State as an alternate option to represent the Big Ten to face Utah.

There’s also the possibility that Purdue, which faces Michigan in the Big Ten championship this weekend, could upset the Wolverines and represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl.

The Wolverines, of course, are expected to be playoff bound no matter this weekend’s result after convincingly beating Ohio State last week.

    If Utah loses

The Utes are a strong candidate to play in the Alamo Bowl, which they last played in back in 2019.

Utah’s opponent in the Alamo Bowl would likely be Texas, which is third in the Big 12 standings.

Undefeated and No. 3 TCU is expected to stay in the playoff field even if it loses in the Big 12 championship game to No. 10 Kansas State, while the Wildcats are a lock for the Big 12’s tie-in with the Sugar Bowl — barring the Horned Frogs falling out of the playoff picture.

That would make the Longhorns the most logical choice to represent the Big 12 in the Alamo Bowl.

Texas and Utah met in the 2019 Alamo Bowl, with the Longhorns winning 38-10.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/bowl-projections-what-utahs-bowl-prospects-look-like-heading-into-pac-12-championship-game/ar-AA14KK1W

Would the Alamo want a rematch from a game 3 years ago? Or a rematch from a game 10 years ago? Hard to say. At the end of the day, OSU could still wind up in Hell Paso.

What’s your preference? Alamo vs Texas? Holiday vs Notre Dame? Vegas vs The angry pirate or Ole Miss?

I’d be fine with any of those. Absolutely no to the Sun vs Pitt. If it was vs Florida St I wouldn’t complain. Much. It is still Hell Paso

  44. Holy shit, MBB is up 21-9 against UW in the league opener about ten minutes in. I’m not sure if the Huskies are any good this year.

  45. 2
    2

Men’s basketball is pretty bad. Only pope can dribble. Everyone else goes to the top corner, waits for double team, then picks up their dribble. Does tinkle even have an offensive play to run? PG dribbles for 30 sec then some last second shot is taken. Might squeak or a win vs UW.

    • Well they secured a better record than last year. Probably means a contract extension for tinkle. A lot to celebrate with 4 wins.

    • 13
      1

So, he’s not supposed to celebrate? OSU snapped a long conference losing streak. Is he only supposed to celebrate when they win the Championship of something?

      • 3
        1

Ask yourself why in his 9th season he’s in this position. Is he not the captain of the ship?

I wouldn’t be celebrating a last second miracle to beat an injury depleted huskies team.

UW came back from almost down 20. And led by 3 with a minute left. Ask yourself how that happened.

If anyone wants to celebrate it? You do you. The whys and how’s of last nights game are more alarming.

  46. I have to give Tinkle credit somewhere. He is excellent on timeouts before key defensive possessions. I can think of several times the Beavs have won because of a crucial defensive possession.

    • I guess but holy smokes he coached that 18 point lead away. Head scratching substitutions and inability to counter press/traps. In first half I thought they broke the press well and attacked the zone with purpose. Then for whatever reason they stopped overloading the zone and failed to get the ball into high post. Just had 5 guys evenly spaced on perimeter. Weird strategy

      • Well to the press issue I would say it was more the players getting themselves in horrible positions. I doubt tinkle is telling them to pick up their dribble when the double team arrives then throw off balance fading passes that get deflected. As far as the offense goes. It’s clear with Taylor, Akanno and Pope that this team is good at pushing the ball up the floor on misses/ turnovers. They need to embrace that more. Their half court offense looks fantastic when we work inside out and move the ball quickly. But it has always puzzled me why they fall into those scoring lulls. Because of the times when our offense is humming. It’s like why did we stop doing the things that were working?

    • Men’s basketball has some talent. Pope, Akkano, Taylor jr, and Ryuny have shown they can be players that can come up big. We need Ryuny and Akkano to be able to hit threes and we could be good! Go beavs good win!

  47. If there’s a prized QB out there now, it’s Hudson Card. Zero to no chance of getting him. But that’s the type of QB for Smith needs to go after quickly.

  48. Forget the spurned backups, I think the Beavs could get a solid qb on an otherwise underperforming or out of the way team. Oregon State should be in the preseason top 25 next year – as is. And we know there are players who only have starting jobs because their NIL numbers or too high to sit – heck, the Beavs really shouldn’t have a problem landing a top transfer – grad transfer or whatever.

  49. Not surprised about Nolan. To go with Musgrave’s departure. I realize players need to look out for themselves, but I would have thought both would have at least wanted be around this team and their teammates, to root them on if nothing else.

    • If he’s trying to go to another FBS school, he’ll have very limited options. But I don’t blame him for transferring. I think he graduated so he’s free to move on. In his last year of football, I think he’d want to play as much as he can. He’d be in a tight battle with GB all spring and summer.

      • Personally I think BG is an incredibly low competitive bar…if the battle is tight in spring and summer it’s a Nolan problem. You’d be hard pressed to find weaker competition than that in any D1 program.

Nolan has an incredibly high ceiling. At his best he is absolutely phenomenal. @USC last year was probably the best performance I’ve ever seen from an OSU QB, ever. Go back and watch highlights- laser accuracy into ultra-tight windows, unreal pocket presence, just flawless. But as we all know, he can look atrocious too. Super inconsistent and streaky.

I think Nolan and BG have basically the same floor but Nolan has an incredible ceiling. His consistency is awful and he’ll probably never get there, but it’s hard for me to comprehend getting beat out by BG…at least based on on-field stuff. Maybe this story really is all about leadership, work ethic, and personality issues with Nolan.. would make the most sense. And could explain some of the inconsistency too.

        • I agree it’s a low bar but I don’t think Nolan could clear it by a lot. IMO Nolan doesn’t have much of a ceiling left at OSU. Your point about the streakiness is the issue. He hit lows more often than he hit his highs. I also don’t think GB has much of a ceiling right now. He’s a high quality backup at best.

Nolan leaving is probably best for him personally and for the program. We all know if the Beavs want to get into a NYE bowl, they need a better QB than Nolan or GB.

    • I feel like he’ll have to drop to a G5 school to get a lot of playing time. If he drops to FCS then what’s the point of even transfering? I would think you would rather battle for the starting job at a P5 over that.

  50. So when do we hear what Musgrave is doing? Is he waiting to see if he will get an NIL offer to transfer elsewhere? Is he not going to the draft afterall?

  51. 11

Weird, Notre Dame’s starting QB is immediately entering the transfer portal and will not play in their bowl game. Not getting the NIL money he wants at ND?
I’m starting to really hate college football.

    • not really, unless a player reports an offer or their name gets mentioned in an article.
otherwise, it’s basically just tracking their follows on social media and seeing which new players the follow from day to day.
And even then, that just means they have interest in reviewing the player but may not extend an offer.

Basically every transfer OSU has landed under Smith has been kept quiet until they announce they are coming here

    • i’m not sure it matters. If Utah wins, USC stays highly ranked and could get NY6 bowl still.
If USC wins, USC goes to the CFP and UW goes to Rose.

    • 5
      1

Better if USC wins they go to the CFP which is more money for the conference. Might as well get some money out of them before they leave.

      • 4
        1

good point. plus maybe that helps OSU’s overall end of season ranking if we have a game where we played toe to toe with a playoff team on the resume

  53. The Nolan transfer is a good thing, right? He wasn’t “the answer”, and he clearly doesn’t want to compete, and he wasn’t that good, and now we don’t have to have drama next spring. Chiles should get a good opportunity to start right away. If he’s a legit 4-star, he should be able to beat out Gulbranson. From what I saw on film, I think he looked to have more upside, so he’ll just have to refine his game when he gets their early. I think it’s possible he’s the guy, which would be exciting.

    • For reference, Marcus Mariota was the #12 Dual threat QB in the country at the time of his recruitment. Aidan Chiles is the #17 QB in the country.

The #3 QB in the country is 5* Nicholaus Iamaleava https://247sports.com/Player/Nicholaus-Iamaleava-46101236 who is committed to Tennessee, played for Warren in Downey, CA against Downey this year and won 49-22. Warren HS is in 1-AA and lost last week to Sierra Canyon who moved on in the 1AA Tournament. Downey is playing Mater Dei tonight in the 2-AA Tournament. They win, they play against either McClymonds or Lemoore.

    • Well the hope will be that Gulbranson improves and given the staff I think its possible. Chiles has one thing he doesnt and thats ability to run the ball and be a threat doing it. That makes the overall run game even better- in coach M we trust, right? With Gulbranson and the run game will passing more than 20 times a game be needed? Run the ball, shorten the games and give the freshman a chance?

    • The Nolan situation gives me all the red flags to think it’s gotta be an addition by subtraction kinda thing, at least from a team culture standpoint. It feels like there was some kind of head/maturity/personality case going on there, just with how he went down from the injury early on and then we never heard or saw from him again for the entire season. Doesn’t add up.

Watched some of Chiles in his championship game. He put up crazy numbers this year, but I don’t see him as ready to step in and and lead the offense from the jump, he’d have to mature a long way over the Spring/Summer to get there, but it is possible.

On the passing front he had a lot of simple reads and quick hits that went for YAC and a lot of deep td bombs opened up by extending the play with his athletic ability, not unlike the success Nolan had in JC. He squares up and throws well on the run and in a moving pocket.

He does not look very refined or held accountable by coaching when it comes to his throwing mechanics and progressions (or lack thereof). He has a bit of a wind-up/elongated throwing motion. It’s inconsistent. He over-strides like he’s trying to throw a runner out at home from center-field a lot like Nolan does. It’s hard to gauge his football IQ based on the speed/depth of the high-school game. He will need to work on that a lot to be consistent and safe with the football in a pro-style scheme against elite D. He has a very high-ceiling due to his talent and athletic ability, but could also be a bust if his brain can’t keep up.

IMO the best case is to redshirt him and bring in an experienced transfer with 1-2 years.

      QB1 Transfer
      QB2 BG
      QB3 Throckmorton
      QB4 Montiel
      RS Chiles

I can also see a bit of musical chairs happening with some transfers going in/out and walk-on’s. It’s possible that if they bring in a transfer that BG or Throck could leave and they end up with a whole new QB room for 2023.

      • I would have rated him 4-star coming off of his JC performance. The question was, would that success translate to power 5, especially against elite players/teams. I think what we have learned is that the answer to that question is both yes and no. His game seems to produce well against mid-level Power 5 and lower level players/teams. Nolan has made some fantastic plays and put together some great games in his career, he’s also laid some total eggs, typically against better opponents that were playing at a high level. Dramatic inconsistency is his downfall.

      • How many of the 4 star or top recruits to be team stars. It’s a crazy flawed system. Grant and Oladapo were walk ones. The receiver is full of 4 stars that were nothing more rotation guys or a guy that for every TD has a drop mayber worse. Musgrave was a big time guy but was crazy inconsistent until this season and then got hurt. Ol’s best players aren’t the biggest names that have committed at the position. Look at Lopez, White and others. Instead its Miller, Morano, Bloomfield and coach M said he’s high on strand the unranked commit in the last class.

Enjoyable watching sc get beat up by uses. They’re only down a score and middle of the third qtr but lots of sad moping faces

  55. How bad is Williams really hurt? Heisman “performance”? When he was struggling his leg was really bad but now he’s just showing so much heart.

    • 2
      1

Got damn it, there’s a narrative to spin, er, tell, of course he’s the best player ever to strap on pads. Just wait until sc is in the B1G, conveniently broadcast by fox

  56. USC was up 17-3 with about 11 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Utah has outscored them 44-7 since.

This is an absolute beat down

    • Shows what solid running and good tackling will do.
I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say that the Beavs are a lot more similar to Utes than to the spoiled children.

What does tonight’s result say about the Beavs games vs these two?

  57. How do you leave him in the game? I’m sure he doesn’t want to come out, but it’s not good for the team for the next game. I know schools don’t give a shit about players health anyway, they are all commodities.
If I hear the words “Morgan Scalley’ again tonight…it’s nothing but Rum and Coke till tomorrow

    • Been several decades since I lived in SoCal; not once have I heard “Mater Dei” not being involved in some football playoff related thing.

      Absolutely bonkers program.

  58. Daschel’s bowl projections as of tonight:

    Latest Pac-12 bowl projection:
    Rose: Utah
    Cotton: USC
    Alamo: Washington
    Holiday: Oregon
    Las Vegas: Oregon State
    Sun: UCLA
    LA: Washington State

I could see the argument for UW to move ahead of USC, but either way, decent show at 2 NY6 bowl games for the Pac still.
Alamo likely takes whichever of UW/USC doesnt get into a NY6 bowl and then it’s the crapshoot for who the Holiday Bowl takes.
Do they take a lower ranked Oregon over OSU?
If they take Oregon, does Vegas take UCLA over OSU?

I could still see OSU landing anywhere from Holiday/Vegas/Sun.
God I hope it isnt the Sun Bowl

Would have been better to have Utah lose and get ranked below OSU in the final standings, but here we are.

Hope to see KSU/Clemson/LSU all lose tomorrow.

    • Wilner has:

      Rose: Utah
      Cotton:USC
      Alamo: UW
      Holiday: Beavs
      Vegas: UCLA
      Sun: Oregon
      LA: WSU

      https://tucson.com/sports/pac-12-hotline/pac-12-hotline-heres-what-uscs-loss-means-for-leagues-bowl-bound-teams/article_12cedba0-731d-11ed-96c5-6ff8dbdbbba8.html

It’s all going to depend on how far USC falls in the final CFP rankings. Historically, conference championship game losers have not fallen very far. Either way, should the Trojans fall, UW is in good position for a NY6 bowl game to replace them.

The Alamo would love to matchup up Cutty Sark and Texas and UW or USC, two of the former schools he coached it. I’d lock whoever doesn’t wind up in a NY6 game as headed to San Antonio.

After that? Well, the holiday gets to choose between the Ducks and Beavs. The ducks finished one game higher in the standings but the Beavs beat them head to head. Ducks have a larger brand and would put more eyeballs on the TV. But I doubt their fans would travel since they feel the holiday bowl is beneath them. But what if the opponent is Notre Dame? Hard to say. Both OSU and Oregon have good selling points for that matchup.

If DTR decides to play in their bowl game you can bet the house Vegas would covet UCLA. They’d love nothing more than to bring their home town kid back to host his final college game against an SEC team. If he decides not to? It’s a crapshoot.

WSU is headed to the LA bowl. They cannot move up since they finished 2 games in the standings below the next highest finishing team. They will face either Boise St or Fresno St.

  59. 6

    Bwaaahahahaha USC!

People watch USC to see them win, to see them lose, or to see their cheerleaders.

If it can’t be the Beavers or Cal, orWazzu – I’m fine with Utah winning the conference.

  60. DTR has accepted an invite to the east/west shrine game but as of yesterday has not stated whether or not he will play in UCLA’s bowl game. I’d bet he doesn’t announce until after their bowl invite is secured. Trust me, UCLA already knows. The Chipster would never lie……..

“Thompson-Robinson is from Las Vegas and went to Bishop Gorman High School (NV), meaning his journey to the NFL could wind up starting in his hometown. UCLA may also be selected to play in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 17, although the Bruins’ all-time leader in completions, total yards and total touchdowns has yet to confirm whether or not he will be suiting up for any upcoming bowl game.”

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/ucla-qb-dorian-thompson-robinson-accepts-east-west-shrine-invite/ar-AA14QhTR

  61. Looks like USC is still in good position to get the last NY6 slot and if it’s not them, the next team up would be UW.

Even with mass chaos, USC or UW should grab the last at large bid.

  62. The Beavers non-conference sked turned out to be surprisingly strong with Boise and Fresno playing for the MWC title today and Montana State opening the FCS playoffs.

  63. This morning 247 has Beavs projected in LA bowl with WSU in LV bowl. Ducks in Holiday. That’s a pretty lazy projection. My hunch is still with Beavs in Holiday although almost every projection has Ducks in Holiday. To me, this is an easy sell for Barnes.

    • It’s not just lazy, it’s not possible. The holiday, Vegas or sun bowls cannot take WSU. They finished at 4-5 in conference play, 2 games behind all the 6-3 teams.

Some jack wagon had UNLV in the Vegas bowl and they aren’t even bowl eligible.

Alamo, Holiday and Vegas bowls can go one game down in the conference standings from the highest remaining team. The Sun and LA bowls must take the highest remaining team available. If there are tied teams? They may pick amongst the tied teams. There won’t be any ties left when it gets to the Sun bowl.

    • Haha that is a great tweet. However bad the Beavs might feel they have it sometimes, at least they haven’t had to endure completely intractable domination by their rivals the way WSU has.

  64. Being up here in Dawg land, that’s all the talk was since Saturday; on how the Huskies were headed to the Rose Bowl, but you had to consider where the talk was eminating from – KJR mostly. The Dawgs, without having to play either Utah or USC in the regular season, felt that they slip into the Rose Bowl. I guess Kyle didn’t get the memo to back off USC so the PAC 12 could get a team into the CFP….spoiling the ‘return to to roses’ which every Husky fan thinks they so deserve; well that and the Heisman for Penix.

    • If Penix doesn’t return next year, UW will need to find another transfer QB. They get USC and Utah next year. Much tougher schedule. They face Boise St and Michigan St on the road in non conf. Boise St will be much tougher next year with their QB having a whole year under his belt now.

  65. I’m not watching it but saw TCU/KSU is headed to overtime.
Would suck to see both Ohio State and Bama back into the playoffs in the final weekend while sitting dormant, but that could easily happen.

  66. I’m watching. If that TCU QB wins this game and doesn’t get the Heisman I’d be shocked. He’s singlehandedly brought TCU back into the game. It’s been like 11 on 1 since the 4thQ started.

    • Weirdly, this may not even cause TCU to drop in the CFP rankings. The USC loss brings Ohio State back in. I doubt the committee wants to set up a rematch with Michigan so the only option would be to put them at 4. I wonder if TCU now drops below a 2 loss Alabama though.

      • Powers that be have the perfect scenario for a Big10 vs SEC playoff with 2 from each conference. I now expect a Georgia vs Ohio St and Michigan vs Alabama for the playoffs.
Even though TCU has 5 top 25 wins “they have played games too closely all season and don’t deserve to be in.” This will be the reasoning to justify the playoffs for the same 4 teams again which the entire nation is tired of seeing.

        • 1
          2

That wouldn’t shock me although the CFP’s incentive may actually be toward variety rather than SEC favortism at this point. The ratings aren’t good when it becomes an all SEC party. Everyone knows the SEC are the best but many don’t care to actually watch them outside of the south.

      • It ain’t over yet, if Michigan gets upset, it’s pure chaos. At that point, might as well put in the Top 4 conf champs. PAC12, SEC, BIG12 and ACC/BIG10.

          • Not quite but essentially yes, top 6 conference champs get auto bids. So the PAC12 would have to have a really bad year to not get an auto bid.

      • USC losing guarantees tOSU a seat at the table. The final spot will come down to a 2 loss Alabama team and a 1 loss TCU that lost its conference championship game by a FG in OT.

    • The first KSU guy to hit the ball carrier on that 4th down was #22 LB Daniel Green who prepped at Madison High in Portland. Was the #3 recruit in Oregon back in 2017 and somehow ended up in Manhattan, KS. Was preseason All Big 10 so it looks like he’s had a good career.

  67. Wish all conferences were set up as 10 teams, similar to the Pac10. Then have every team play each other once and eliminate the conference championship games which do nothing but add risk to teams that already have had a good season.

    • Conference championship games were created for the sole purpose of extra $$$$

They don’t care about the risk to players.

Remember when the big 12 didn’t have a Conference championship game from 2010-2017?

They saw the extra scratch doing so created. Money grab. Nothing more

      • I though the purpose of the conference championships was to produce another “quality” win for the the BCS computers to chew on. Am I remembering that wrong? Are computers still involved in the determination of the playoff teams? I agree that they should just be eliminated at this point. Since the playoff teams will already get 3 or 4 extra games, why the need for an extra championship game? Money – as answered above.

  68. Thinking about the merits of a TCU/tOSU/Alabama/USC makes the problem with quality wins an elusive argument when multiple SEC and Big10 teams were ranked high in preseason rankings only to flame out and not even be ranked end of year. How is it a quality win to beat Texas A&M in October as a top 15 team when the can’t even qualify for a bowl by November? Ohio St gets the same benefit of a ranked matchup early season against a team that isn’t actually top 25.

Preseason rankings and recruiting rankings become drivers of narrative for certain programs and results on the field don’t matter as much anymore. TCU should be in still and I would argue USC with 2 losses maybe before Bama. Ohio St losing by 30 is as bad as Tennessee losing by 30, then dropped by 5-6 spots immediately but OSU sticks around.

    • “Preseason rankings and recruiting rankings become drivers of narrative for certain programs and results on the field don’t matter as much anymore.”

Yeah, rankings should be done away with. Allow for media “power polls” for the fun of it, but wait until the end of the season to determine playoff teams based on records.

Neither the NBA nor NFL determine playoff participation and seeding by media polls. Imagine if they did. As NCAA goes towards a blatantly pro league, do away with polls as determining mechanisms.

The NBA DOES have terrible, inconsistent refereeing like NCAA football, but that detracts from that league’s integrity Just as it does NCAA football integrity.

      • Yes we are currently in a beauty contest era for post season. As they continue to argue towards a legitimate playoff format, a loss in any conference championship should be an elimination game for the loser. If conferences insist on the championship game it should be as a first round playoff of sorts. Which means KSt and Utah should be moving on in a playoff system if there is any merit to the game. Otherwise it is an exhibition game with no upside beyond cash…and there is the run.

        • That’s all it is. I’ve read about it, but never bought in the concept of not watching football due to the exploitation of players. I’m inching closer, but it will take a while. I saw the hit on Rising and had that rush of contact, but that could have really fucked him up.
Anyway, go Beavs. I’d like to see a bowl game with my gal, looking at $3K MIN. We at the Fiesta Bowl-not sure how to top that.

  69. Look for the Clemson QB, DJ Uiagalelei to enter the transfer portal after this season. A guy who sorely needs a fresh start. Southern Cal native so maybe he’d look to go back west.

    • Interesting the the AP released just prior to the bowl selection show. You’d think bowl decisions are made by now, but it could influence decisions being made further down the pecking order.

    • The Ap always makes you wonder what they are thinking. But for pure comedy check out the ESPN FPI from today. Beavs at 24 and the Zeros at 13? Bama at 2 while TCU is at 10. Who programs the computer? Joke

      • A lot of theirs is based on stats like offensive and defensive efficiency. It’s more for predictive purposes than a reflection of who is the more “impressive” team or whatever.

    • The AP and Coaches polls have less relevance at the end of the year since it rewards hotter teams. CFP rankings do take into account the entire resume more.

  70. When are they going to fucking announce this shit! I’m sick of listening to them. Talk about the same four teams virtually every year and now I have to listen to Saban wine that he didn’t get into the playoff.

    • Beavs should be able to shut down their dreadful offense. They are USC without the receivers or Caleb William’s accuracy/elusiveness.
I like the matchup for the growth of the program and it will force a focus for the team to be fully prepared to get a win against an SEC team on the resume as well as the 10 win threshold.
      Is Martinez healthy?

    • Nice! 13 days to go! Great venue! Florida jyst 6-6, not much to be gained there. Need to blow them out.

I’d have preferred v. Notre Dame in the Holiday, but this is great and nice progress for the program.

  71. From 24/7
“As of Sunday afternoon, 16 of the Gators’ scholarship players from the 2022 season have already either declared for the upcoming NFL Draft, publicly stated their intent to transfer away from the university or been dismissed from the program. Players such as sophomore quarterback Anthony Richardson, junior right guard O’Cyrus Torrence, senior linebacker Ventrell Miller and junior wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, among others, are also eligible to declare for the draft and could choose to skip the Las Vegas Bowl if they do so.”

    • It would be really interesting if AR didn’t play. Kitna was their backup and is obviously gone. Don’t think the #3 guy has played all season.

      • From a “Luck O’ The Beavs” aspect, I don’t like this. Hopefully, their #3 is not a freshman dual threat. I’m counting on Beav’s defense being past those days of getting torched by some unknown QB.

    • Thanks for the link up above to the interview with Miiitch.
Sounds like even better baserunning could be on tap for next season.

      Working on new thread.

  72. 1

Thinking about this a few minutes, seems like a bad draw. A 6-6 team with a bunch of players potentially bailing, and a backup QB busted for child pornography that could be one of the dominant storylines for them (the other being the number of players leaving the program). The bowl and its telecast team won’t focus on these aspects, because they’ve got to try and make the game sound entertaining.

FLA should have athletes of course, though potentially second and even third stringers.

If the Beavers win, in the longer term, the thing that will likely stand out the most is a 10-win season.

I hope Martinez can go, have a big 2.5 quarters, then sit and stay healthy. Should be plenty of carries after for the Beavers stable of RBs.

  73. It’s a good window – prime time back east on a Saturday on ABC when a lot of Christmas parties are happening. It’s a win. And you are playing in a football stadium, not Petco Park and splitting the time slot.
