Home Football Oregon State @ San Jose State (Game Week)

Oregon State @ San Jose State (Game Week)

12:30 on CBS.

Can you believe it’s here? And it will be over before we know it. Savor every game this year, Beavs! We’ll never see PAC football as we know and love it again.

I’m going Beavs either at 1 loss or undefeated this year. I think they’re going to have a rage year and obliterate people. We’ll see.

Final in this one:

45-13.

I’m with you as a one loss team. I don’t think this team is where it needs to be to not drop a game. If you add in all of the tough games and the fact we can’t trust our kicker situation I think they drop one.

This is a showcase game. Beavs need to make a statement on national TV and Smith isn’t Riley. He’s like Erickson when it comes to these kinds of games. He won’t let up. Beavs need to blowout SJSU and make it worse than vs USC

Given this is the last year of the PAC, I’d like to see a full color Benny on the helmets, not that all-orange decal Benny or the modern Beaver logo.

Yeah I know, the unis don’t matter as much as the results, but still…

  4. Also, if this is the last season of Beaver football in the PAC, and maybe in a P5 Conference, its worth thinking about the history of this site, under what conditions it continues (if Beavs go independent, reform PAC, or go B12) or not.

Maybe be thinking about when you first joined here…

I’m going to have to go back and look at the very first post, and will be thinking about some of my favorite posts (Angry’s chess analogy in assessing Riley’s coaching was one)….

  5. ACC is meeting again tonight to vote on Cal/Stan/SMU additions.
If they vote no again, do they just keep re-voting every few days till one of the “no” votes forgets to dial into the Zoom call?

ESPN covers it like they haven’t been dictating terms for each maneuver behind the scenes. We should remember that ESPN is simply a sports focused news agency.

The ACC Grant of Rights is agreed to by ACC schools in conjunction with ESPN. Why is it such a mystery what is happening when they will be immediately impacted by additional payouts/renegotiated terms and any number of other details?

I think it will be done by Friday just in time to turn everyone to actual games. It is all controlled theater at this point and OSU is the school swinging in the wind waiting for decisions.

Begin lawsuits, vote to stop revenues to departing schools, shut them out of all championship appearances within conference tourneys/playoffs and play hardball back for goodness sakes.

I get it that Barnes is trying to keep all options open though and attempt to stay somewhat cordial about the whole saga for future opportunities.

        • If they’re like other organizations ESPN probably have “firewalls” in place to control information flowing between divisions. And if they’re like other organizations, those “firewalls” probably get circumvented in casual conversation all the time.

          • 11

Listen, my level of petty is at an 11 right now. If these yahoos want to be free of the conference, fleeing in the middle of the night, they can leave the assets and any claims at the door.

Per SI, all you need to know about this season:

“Overrated: Oregon. The Ducks might be worthy of their No. 15 preseason ranking, but the competition in the league is stiff, and there is a tricky nonconference trip to Lubbock.

    Champ: Oregon State.”

Usually I root for PAC teams (Nike aside, of cours) in non-conference games because it’s good for the conference. This year, I’m a WSU fan and that’s it. Screw the rest of those traitors.

  8. So ESPN is now trying to create free agency trades among conferences and schools. The deal has been proposed to allow Kansas and WVU to leave Big12 in order to join the ACC, so that Big12 can then absorb the PAC4 as a group. Stanford won’t go for this so why try?

Meanwhile OSU gets told to sit down and be quiet while the adults figure things out.

And the WCC vote is postponed due to an on campus shooting at UNC.
More people will be upset about the postponement than the shooting.

  10. Got tickets for OSU v. UW.

Could be last PAC game at OSU, Beavs should have no more than one loss at that point, great matchup, and the home crowd should be its loudest ever.

I was at upset win over #3 USC, and that was pretty loud, but I suspect the ’22 home crowd was louder for CW last year, even at reduced capacity(?).

Trying to think of the best games I’ve been able to attend…

38-6 thumping of Stanford after the lone UW loss during Fiesta Bowl year (00-01). Pretty much all the home games from 03-08 when I was an on-campus student, both USC upsets, Wisconsin in 2012.

But I think my all time fav was an away game @ Autzen in the 07 Civil War. Just the arrogance the yuck fans had that day, so many drunk fights in the stands, their heartbreak when James Rodgers scored on that fly sweep, the disbelief when they stuffed them on 4th down to end the game in OT. Hard to top that one.

And everyone KNEW that play was coming…arrogant Duck fan i knew acted like the game never happened. And did so again last year.

Beating “Cheatin’ Pete” Carrol when USC was #3 was my favorite. Back then, we just walked into the stadium the evening before, no security stopped us, and we watched USC warm up, 3 QBs throwing from the 50 to the end zone, linemen with HUGE legs, Carrol all smiles, and my brother says: “Beavs are going to win.”

Moore was cool that game, Stroughter dynamic, it was a blast. I got some photos if Carrol calling “Timeout!” that i still have…

Last year’s CW would have been great in person and probably tops. Just running the damn ball for 1.5 quarters and taking the game back from a smug Lanning…

Not a fan of the hype, I wish we were under the radar again. We may need to temper expectations a bit. We lost a lot of big pieces from last year, and, people forget that even though we went 10-3 last year, we just as easily could have gone 7-6. The Fresno State game (Colletto could have just as easily been stuffed at the line), Stanford game, and Oregon game all went down to essentially the last plays, with the Stanford win (the definition of a lucky win, that td catch and run is a once in a lifetime type play) and Oregon win requiring a good bit of luck. Even with everything that had to go right in the Oregon game for us to come back, it still came down to a goal line stand, and if Nix had passed just a bit higher on Ducks final play, we likely would have lost. I just don’t see us having the same successes this year, and I believe we lose to Utah, Washington, Oregon, and likely one more upset loss. Additionally, the fact that the word out of camp is that our kicker situation is still sketchy, I feel we are in for some heartbreaking losses.

      • With the game on CBS this week, I want to make sure I’m squared away to be able to watch from home via Roku(no antenna so I wont be watching over the air)

Does anybody know if this would be streaming on the CBS Sports app? Or is it one of those games that will only be on Paramount Plus now?
The constant shuffling of networks and apps makes it difficult to know exactly where the games will be week to week.
That was one of the plus sides of having so many games on the Pac12 network. If you have access to the network, you’re set for at least 6 games and they always start on time on the correct channel. Not like ESPN where they shift you to ESPN+ and then mid play jump over to ESPNU only to have the 2nd half on ESPN2

        • Btw, Paramount plus is $5.99 for 1 month and can be cancelled immediately. If you dont have an antenna for local CBS or a cable subscription, Paramount may be your best bet.
I’m thinking if you have access to a Comcast login, the CBS Sports App should carry it still. But just not 100% sure.

      • I agree that we could have been 13-1. We haven’t been able to have consistency on the long pass since Mannion and Cooks. The long pass is usually just a lost down. If we had a laser QB last year, we might have hit some of the missed long passes. We might have not thrown 4 pics to USC. We might have also been much farther ahead in the “close” games like Stanford, Fresno State, USC, WA or even Oregon. I also don’t think the guys lost from last year are the only talent these coaches can get. Looking past the players individual talent is that they play better as a team than just the sum of the parts.

            I mean… he isn’t wrong.
Ramaswamy is what the white supremacists call a useful idiot. The guy just jumps from one old and tired racist trope to another, seamlessly, and as if he’s just reading them verbatim from their original flyers, thrown onto porches in baggies with a couple coins in them (because washers now cost more than the coins).

          • Ramaswamy says all the right things IMO, but he was a libertarian and switched party affiliations. Some question the validity of the authenticity of what he’s saying, myself included. He does not fit the mold of a typical political candidate and speaks more elegantly than Trump, but without Trump at the Republican Debate, he was able to control the America First policies and also his own policies as a former libertarian. I don’t trust him as far as I can throw a boulder twice my size. In fact, I don’t like any political candidate for any party.

Ramaswamy says he’s not “bought and paid for”, but yet he took George Soros scholarship money and is a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep for Big Pharma and has made millions off of those sales, including defective drugs.

Hence, the reason why I don’t trust any political candidate of any party affiliation, including Trump nor DeSantis.

          • “Ramaswamy says all the right things IMO”

What Ramaswamy says is verbaitm KKK propaganda from forever.
Mostly, he says it because Trump has lived it and just mindlessly re[peated it forever, and he just wants to be Trump’s veep. I imagine he’s intelligent enough to know that his rhetoric is verbatim KKK propaganda. I imagine he doesn’t give a shit, because the people who believe the KKK are idiots, and he trusts that reality more than he does his own safety in the world.

          • From a Ramaswamy interview “I would stop our funding of Israel’s sovereignty unless they told us they didn’t need our help anymore” Sounds like a real David Duke.

It’s all or nothing, at this point. We’re not sneaking up on anyone, this year.
The only mission for all players is to beat the team across the line of scrimmage… on every dam play.
This is what it feels like to be good or better.

    • Enjoy the season. Biggest risks are likely:

      1) lack of a reliable kicker.
      2) whether or not Lindgren falls in love with DJ’s arm.
      3) whether or not Smith’s gambler reemerges.

    • Well if the Beavs lose to those three at least we can look forward to the Duck bowl choke job like we see every year…. and perhaps a Holiday bowl win for the Beavs.

  12. PBS has S-I Pat Forde on today, calling the PAC collapse a travesty, absurd geography, travel demands on athletes, administrators caring more about $$$ than students…

“Big 12 and ACC hanging on by their fingernails….”

    Loss of rivalry games…

    • We won’t lose to Utah. For 1) it will be in Corvallis, on a Friday night. 2) the Utes are playing Florida and @ Baylor for their OOC this year. those aren’t gimmes. depending upon how they do against either of those teams will tell us how we will do against Utah.

UW is a home game, last year in Seattle they had a convenient “power outage” and Atmospheric River that lasted the entire game. We couldn’t matchup to their passing game and we became 1 dimensional. I don’t forsee either of those happening this year in Reser. Our offense will be able to matchup to their offense.

Oregon is a road game and they don’t view this game the same way we do in regards to a rivalry. Beavs won’t roll in this game, but I fully expect a really good top 10 if not Top 8 matchup on FOX. It will have a lot of eyes on this one compared to last years game. Oregon fully expected us to roll over and die after going up 31-10 in the 3rd quarter. That was their downfall. OSU OL out muscled Oregon’s D and smaller LB’s. We have more TE’s than we did last year and we can do to Oregon what Stanford under Harbaugh did to Oregon and go heavy 3 TE sets and run the ball to wear down almost any team if need be.

    • Strongly disagree with this take. If you want to say we’re an 8-4 team I think that’s reasonable, but we will be competitive with everyone. I won’t take *any* L to the bank, let alone two home games.

  13. I have no clue what this team is capable of. Too many questions. QB, DBs, DL, WR, kicking game, and injuries. That said, I’m confident in this coaching staff. My biggest concern is vs SJSU. Teams typically have a huge improvement from game 1 to game 2. SJSU will be playing its second game and will have home field. Hate that the spread is so large. If they stream roll thru preseason and stay healthy going into league play, it could be a magical year but this team can’t afford another slow start to a season.

    • Not questions:

      – QB should be elite with 3 guys who can all go
      – DL best at Osu in maybe 15 years with Rawls .. LoLo .. super experienced Hodgins .. steady Golden and 2 young studs ready to pop off in Collins and Hickle
Wr- Bolden and Gould are a dynamic albeit similar 1-2 punch and the 3rd option will be split between 3 beastly TE’s in Veiling Terry and Overman

      Moderate question:

DB’s – Oladapo.. Cooper.. Robinson can all ball
Julian is back as a potential Wild card and I worked out with Akili Arnold this summer back here in the OC. He’s a full grown man now who should have a breakout year. That leaves 1 corner spot as the real question but Ivey.. McCoy should hold up and if Julian returns to form quickly you can slide Coop to corner

      Question:

Kicker- agreed it’s bad Hayes hurt again Sappington is mid

      • Good points but still unanswered questions. All needs to come together quickly. If so, preseason will be a breeze and confidence will be high heading into conference play. If not, 1 loss could snowball into several. My expectations are high but this team still has a lot of questions. SJSU game is extremely important. Worried about UCLA and Arizona. Not worried as much about UW and Utah. I can’t imagine a universe where we lose to Ducks. The CW tailgate scene will require extra security.

Question: if you had to chose: 6-6 with CW win or 11-1 losing to Ducks and Ducks win national championship?

I’ve got 60 some odd years of Beaver football under my belt. So when it comes to pre season optimism, I’m always a bit jaded. They say that teams make the most improvement between week one and week two. SJSU now has a game under their belt against USC, on the road no less and for at least a half, they gave SC all they could handle. I’m sure they’ll be chomping at the bit for another opportunity to take down a PAC 12 team in a home opener. So the Beavs handled Cordero (?) two years ago when he was with Hawaii? Great, but he’s now two years improved playing with a better supporting cast. Yeah the Beavs are getting hyped, which is fun, but the 01 opener at Fresno is still etched in my brain the last time they were hyped like this. As hopeful as I am about DJ, this will be his first start in a new offense in a hostile environment. For those thinking the Beavs will go 12-1 this year, I hope you’re right. But that one loss could possibly be this Sunday. Hope I’m wrong.

    • I remember the hype in 01. I was in jr. high back then, but I still remember it. We lost a lot of great players from the 2000 team in 01 so everyone thought it was a “reload’ instead of back to a rebuild year. Erickson brought in a lot of ‘1 and done” players for the 2000 season, include TJ Houschmenzadah and Chad Johnson(Ocho Cinco) to name a few as well as OL that year. Fast-forward to the 2022 to 2023 season. Who did we lose on offense?

“Jack Hammer”, Brandon Kipper, Harrison, Jam Griffin, John Dunmore, JT Byrne(TE), Tristan Gebbia, Chance Nolan, and Tyjon. Tyjon was cut by Seahawks. What about defense? Rejzohn Wright, Omar Speights(to LSU), Jaydon Grant, Alex Austin, and Ron Hardge.

7 offensive players(including Jack Hammer) and 6 defensive(including Jack Hammer)

We gained the following in transfer portal additions: Jacob Schuster 4* DL (still waiting on NCAA for waiver approval), Calvin Hart 3* LB from Illinois, Jermaine Terry II 3* TE from Cal, Mason Tufaga 3* LB from Utah, Oluwaseyi Omotosho 3* Edge from Wyoming, DJU 4* QB from Clemson, Grant Starck 3* OT from Nevada

We did not add any DB’s from the Transfer Portal which tells me our staff is confident in our current DB’s to replace Alex Austin and Rejzohn.
Added 2 DL, 1 TE, 2 LB’s, 1 QB, and 1 OL for a total of 7 players. 4 on defense and 3 on offense. This season will tell us how talented the recruiting has been in the last 2-3 years as the starters will be players who were recruited in that time frame.

This team reloaded; it didn’t need to rebuild. not the same situation as the ’01 season.

  15. Was watching a Pac12 network replay of the USC/OSU game from last year tonight. Never actually got to see that game. Great atmosphere. Beavs defense was playing with their hair on fire. Really entertaining to watch.
    Couple of observations:

Addition by subtraction: We no longer have Harrison or Nolan. Those 2 accounted for several mental errors. Dropped passes, interceptions. Drive killing hold downfield in crunch time.

USC got away with so many holds on both sides of the ball. Caleb Williams had help escaping multiple tackles by uncalled holds. On defense our receivers were being grabbed all the way down the field. Terrible reffing.

On the play where USC was aided by the late push after forward progress was stopped, Williams snapped the ball after the clock hit zero. No call. It was a 4th down which would have put them at 4th and long after penalty yards. Beavs were double screwed on that play alone.

Looking forward to seeing this year’s defense. Our team should play even faster this year. The pass rush should be unlike any we’ve seen in quite awhile from a Beaver squad with Hodgins/Stover/Franke/Hodgins back in action and Chatfield/Rawls/Shippen/McCarten/Lolohea returning. And from what I’ve been reading, Hickle has been looking every bit the part so far. Lots of long and fast players to rotate and keep fresh.

Has there been any word on our DT transfer?

    • 1
      5

Why do you think the game was on Pac-12 Networks instead of Nationally Televised? It’s because USC could get away with holding all game long on Pac-12 Network vs National TV. It was to protect them as they were the favorites for the CFP. Now that it’s the last year of the Pac-12 and everyone left, Oregon State is now America’s team and everyone is rallying for us. So it will be more evenly reffed this season as there is no money to be split among members next year.

      • The game was on P12 network because they wanted to have USC use up their required number of games played on P12 network as early as possible so that it kept them available for later in the season when the networks would want to show then more. Thats why. Networks want big name teams who are in contention to show late in the season and get first pick of games to show.

        • Ian you are correct. I remember reading about that last year wondering why we had so many “big games” on Pac -12 network.

      • It was because the expectation was USC would wade into corvallis and completely destroy us. No one wants to see 50 point wins on national TV. At least I dont.

    • I read he is eligibility to play this season. I was at the game and couldn’t believe how many drop passes usc receivers had. It was a game the Beavs should have won with the Trojans having an off night it seemed. You just knew another int was coming from Nolan on that last drive.

    • I assume the coaches see all the reffing irregularities during the game. Are they not allowed to point them out to the officials?

      • Did you not see Lincoln Riley in the SJSU game with the onside kick? He was cussing out the refs over calls and it was glorious! They did not get the preferential treatment they got last season and what he was used to at OU. welcome to a level playing field, Lincoln Riley!

Pointing out and yelling at refs is a double-edged sword. You won’t gain the refs favor in future calls by pointing out you don’t like how they’re calling a game inconsistently in your eyes. It’s like telling a moderator in a debate that the moderator is allowing more time for one person than another, being relaxed on ground rules for one participant than the other. refs should call games as they see it, not as how coaches want to see it.

        • I didn’t watch the SJSUgame at all. Not suggesting JS yell at the refs. He doesn’t do yelling. It was a question – and I guess you answered it – not a good idea. However, if as NB pointed out in his watch of last year’s USC game, there was constant holding – if it was so blatant and consistent, I only questioned whether a coach could point it out.

Everyone keeps downvoting me, but won’t explain how I’m wrong. What makes you all think we’ll get through both Utah and the back to back gauntlet of Washington and Hole at Autzen so easily? We lost a lot of defensive pieces, and there are still a huge amount of question marks on offense as of right now.

    • 6
      1

      I’m concerned about CB.

Not sure what you think the offensive concerns are. We have one of the best OL’s in the country, a top RB, a 5-star QB, and probably the fastest receiving corps in the conference.

    • Past trajectory of Smiths teams. An actual QB. A DC that’s competent and can get more with less. An extremely experienced Oline. A dam good running game. Hope.

Who actually said it was going to be easy?

    • I’d be surprised if the Beavs lose all three. Utah and Washington at home, not gimmes but very winnable.
I believe the Beavs will win 2 of 3, maybe all.
But, I’ve not seen the team play and we’ll learn a lot about them this Sunday.

    • I think we take 2 of the 3 as well. Both home games and I expect a packed Reser.

I feel most confident about WA. Was a very close game last year, on the road and without a competent QB.

    • “Gauntlets” of opponents:

Utah: v. UCLA, @ OSU, BYE
      ORE: v. USC, @ ASU, v. OSU
      UW: @ USC, v. UTAH, @ OSU
      OSU: v. Stan, v.UW, @ UO

UW appears to have the toughest 3 game schedule prior to playing Beavers. Utah the easiest.

  17. 2
    9

Utah has been our kryptonite since about 2019. Even if we lose we’ve been pretty competitive with most teams, but with the exception of 2021, they’ve relly had our number.

    • 10
      2

Are you speaking from the duck fan perspective? or OSU???
True, Utah has had their way with Oregon a few times.

OSU vs Utah, that hasn’t really been the case.
Every game the past several years has been competitive outside of 2019.
Last year the score got out of hand late, but OSU was still in the game until the middle of the 3rd, after Nolan had already been knocked out of the game.
And that was despite Nolan throwing multiple INTs early to give Utah short fields.

      • 2
        1

Corvallis is a different environment now. The stadium will be rocking, and I suspect more tickets will be sold closer to each game. Should have sellouts near the end of the season is my guess.

You’re correct NiceBeaver that the Utah game last year was an outlier with Nolan throwing 2 picks early (1 being pick six) and then Gulbranson getting thrown into the fire against the unknown to be Pac-12 champs and throwing 2 picks, 1 in the endzone. Beavs were driving, but had we known Gulbranson was better as a game manager than gunslinger, we probably would have run the ball more, but running doesn’t usually cultivate comeback wins.

  18. Chance Nolan got mentioned above and out of curiosity I looked him up. Apparently he left TCU program about 3 weeks ago because he wouldn’t be getting a lot of playing time. (Sorry if all of you already knew this.)

    • Yea something weird going on there with Chance it seems. How he played vs Utah and the injury and not being around the team at all after. Transferring to TCU when they were already set at starter, just a lot that doesn’t quite add up with the info publicly available. Maybe he’s still not right from the injury and he’s gonna have to let Football go? He’s got talent, at this point would love to see him maybe go down to FCS to finish his career, but after bailing on TCU I’m not sure what his eligibility situation even is.

      • 2
        4

He’s also deleted everything about TCU from his social media and made his Instagram profile picture just black. Must be going through some demons. Possible he had to medically retire.

No big surprises on the depth chart. A few pleasant newcomers and a couple disappointments.

I’m of the opinion, when transfers come in at a position of need, they need to be on top of the depth chart come the start of the year,

    Hip hip hooray –
DJU, Hart, and Ivy did a great job of coming in taking the top slot.

golf clap because while they won’t start, they’ll see plenty of snaps
Starck gets a small pass for now due to the depth in front of him
Taylor the #3 juco DE coming in, wouldn’t think he’d be third string
Terry – He can catch but blocking is probably holding him back

    Disappointment –
Omotosho where are you? Not even on the depth chart. Smith mentioned there are no significant injuries so it’s not that. Beavs only had 20 sacks last year.
Tufaga – didn’t crack the two deep either and got beat out by a true frosh and a guy who switched to defense in the spring.

The 2022 high school recruiting class is starting to appear all over the depth chart, (4 on the OL)
Thomas, Jordan, Lopez, Hickle, Velling, Swen, Wright, Martinez, Strand, Elu, Vincic

True frosh on the depth chart – hopefully they don’t burn the redshirt for nothing, or maybe they do when the Beavs conference fate is decided.
    Expected – Chiles

Not unexpected and probably will burn their redshirt
    Card
    Collins

Big surprise so congrats to these guys
    Chisom
    McCoy
    Vickers

    Other random observations
Pope went in/out of the portal earlier this year, not on the two deep.
Nice to Valsin appear after hearing rumors of him transferring
7 TEs of the 9 TEs are listed on the depth chart. Only Jensen a true frosh and Kelley who is out for the year with an ACL tear from last year are not listed.
Nice to see some serious depth at key positions

Coach “Prime” wearing mirrored shades in his indoor press conference. That dude spends so much energy on himself he can’t possibly have anything left for his players. Not a leader of men. He is a “prime” example of what’s wrong with college football.

Some teams will have 2 games complete before we even kick off.

  26. There is a scenario emerging as a high probability of occurring that sees Aresco and 4-6 AAC teams leave the AAC to join the Pac4 with Kliavkoff being officially fired. Expect a few MWC to join in the future in that scenario.
    Big12 not an option.

    • The best targets are still Tulane, Memphis, SMU (if they aren’t accepted into the ACC), UTSA and Rice. Add in those few MWC teams and you could have:

      East
      Tulane, Memphis, UTSA, Rice

      West
      OSU, WSU, BSU, SDSU

Which MWC teams are most attractive if you were to only take two? SDSU, UNLV, CSU, and BSU are the healthiest financially.

  27. Nebraska landed a 5* TE transfer from Georgia this past offseason. He was a guy OSU had been kicking the tires on, Arik Gilbert. Nebraska fans were very glad to land him.

Except yesterday he was arrested for a breaking/entering at a vape shop. And it was all caught on security camera.
That face covering almost concealed his identity….and he would have gotten away with it if it werent for those meddling cops!

    https://twitter.com/thedailybeast/status/1696851349877522440?t=UHEpgz-qfCKt_8smT0LswQ&s=19

      • And just a few days ago, HC Matt Rhule was going to bat for him talking about how Gilbert is the most deserving guy of a transfer waiver and “If he doesnt get it, they shouldnt even have the waiver”

Giving him the waiver now would be about the most NCAA move ever.

This site sure is jovial and optimistic for a site called Angry Beavs. If anyone dares mention that our current ceiling is 9-10 wins and that we won’t start out 10-0 this year, people see to not take it too well.

I am a current student at OSU. I am confident I keep up with the players in person and sports a good bit more than most of you.

It’s nice to have more fellow angries on board, especially the next generation of angries. It will be heartwarming to see the self-loathing (or more likely apathy) that develops amongst the current student body when we drop out of P5 football.

Tradition here is to engage in discussion. You don’t seem to have responded to many/any of the counters to your criticisms.

Also, most people here have been Beaver fans longer than I assume you’ve been alive if you’re a current student. We’re all staring into the abyss this season. Optimism is a coping mechanism.

        • Teo! LMAO

Oh man, I just watched that Manziel ‘documentary’ that dude is still batshit goofy btw, but anyway, they showed the 2012 Heisman award and I had forgotten Teo was a finalist. What a shitshow that year was. Oof.

    • Consider yourself welcomed aboard. This is birdie if not hole-in-one territory for them, since they rarely ever get new blood on this site. This is their form of initiation. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and thoughts. Just make sure you can back them up with reasons why in your comment.

For example, “I believe this team is the most talented team since 2000 because we have a QB who has the arm, great head on their shoulders, and is all about the team and not about self. We have depth at all positions except maybe DB’s. This makes me think we will lose a game or 2 in the middle to end of the season where we end up 9-3.” This is merely an example of what one could say without getting blasted for going against the grain.

My question to you is, what is your major and what year are you at OSU? I’m back in school on their E-Campus to complete my Bachelors degree in Business Administration. I’ve been an OSU fan since the mid 90’s.

Duck troll up early today. More likely your Ducks end at 8-4 than the Beavs.
Funny self gloss of how you have inside info because you sit in an Art 101 class with a couple of freshman football players.
Order “How to Be a Better Troll” from Amazon and come back in a few months.

    • you’re stating exactly what I used to do under Mike Riley. I would always shoot for mediocrity and be happy when we exceeded it and disappointed when we underachieved.

This day and age, each year, JS teams have improved their record and team from one year to the next without regression(except Covid year which we all know, doesn’t count). I have yet to lay down my prediction as I need to see how Utah handles FL, Oregon limps(Bo Nix injured jab) past Portland State, and how UW does against Boise St. Once I see those games or scores, then I can get a little clarity on how the season will go for us. I know we improved, but if any of those teams regress or struggle like USC, then they will all be ripe for the picking.

“Everyone who doesn’t blindly accept us having another 10+ win season this year as a foregone conclusion is a Duck fan”- This Board

    • You want to know why most fans consider 8-4 (your prediction) as the floor barring significant injury. It is the schedule.

      1) Given how well this team has played at home the last 2 years the assumption is 6-0 at home. That isn’t a huge stretch. 11-1 at home with the only loss to USC. (we don’t need to rehash that game)
      2) In a year with the Civil War at Autzen, Road games at SJS, WSU, CAL, Col, AZ and Oregon is almost easiest road schedule you could imagine, but I had similar thoughts in 2021 when we lost at Col and Cal in back to back weeks, but most people believe we’ve grown since then.

Now things happen, I was a freshman in 2001 and still haunted by the disappointment of that season, but unless you think the talent level has dropped or this team/coaching staff hasn’t grown since the road debacle of 2021, this teams floor is 8-4, 10-2 is reasonable, things happen and 12-0 is the dream.

We also get Julian back in the secondary.

MLB will probably be ok. Easton is a rising star and Hart is just as good a replacement on defense as anyone USC brought in. If Hart can play coverage, that unit may actually be better overall than last year.

CB is my concern. My optimistic view is Robinson was on track to start last year until he got hurt and Ivy has great size and was highly rated as a recruit. My pessimistic view is neither has experience and JC production translating to PAC production is always a bit of a crap shoot.

  30. 1
    5

I think all 3 losses last year were due in a large part to QB play and the reliance on the QB’s. Gulbranson improved by the bowl game and had he played that well against the Dawgs could have been the difference. Putting on my orange colored glasses I see Beavs vs Georgia bulldogs in championship.

  31. “National darling Beavers”?.….that from a writer for the LA Times who predicts a 10-2 season and appearance in the Conf Champ game for the Beavs (losses to only WSU and nike).

“The Trojans will beat Utah and Washington at the Coliseum and win a wild one in Eugene, Ore. Oregon State’s schedule sets up well, and we couldn’t ignore the possibility of a “Pac-4” team making a run at the crown. Caleb Williams will hold off the national darling Beavers.”

    https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-08-30/college-football-picks-for-the-2023-season

    • I doubt it. I’m more in the camp of “the schools that wanted to leave shot down a reasonable deal” than “GK is incompetent/a saboteur.”

    • Imagine the walk of shame as he enters the room…

Hello, I’m George Kliavkoff. I’m here representing the 2 remaining teams of the Pac12. A Couple weeks back I was representing 10 teams, but, well…..shit happens.

        • That’s funny, I hadn’t even considered the dynamics of these inflated egos walking into their first b1g meeting.

Not only did their teams take a step back into mediocrity but their admins also became the red headed stepchildren, just allowed at the table because they brought the dessert

      • “Kliavkoff has not spoken publicly since and declined to comment about realignment as he hurried past reporters in a meeting room lobby at the DFW Grand Hyatt.” LOL True walk of shame here.

    • Would’ve been a nice addition but it sounds like the D Line might actually be the strength of this defense, which sounds odd to say considering it was the weak link for 5 years.

      • My main concern on the DLine is we don’t have really any big boys if a team decides to run Jumbo on us. Shipping is about our biggest guy at around 300lbs. Most other guys are leaner and faster and will have to win those battles on technique and speed.

    • Jon Wilner is a sports reporter from the bay area, so there’s that. I don’t think this game will be close, 16-28 point win for the Beavs.

      • For me last year when the Beavs absolutely rolled Montana State was when I knew they were really good. MSU was an elite FBS team and looked helpless against them. Many P-5 programs can struggle against the motivated top-tier FBS programs and the Beavs didn’t at all.

    • Wilner is going for clickbait anyway. OSU defense will look better that USC and the Beaver offense will be as good as USC.

Beavs will come out looking to make some early season statements, control the line of scrimmage throughout and win convincingly. 42-17

      • ^^^^ This ^^^^

The article concludes: Straight-up winners: Utah, Stanford, TCU, Washington, North Texas, USC, WSU, UCLA and Oregon State

  32. https://writeforcalifornia.com/p/espn-cal-stanford-smu-acc-invites
“The four rumored no votes continue to be Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina and NC State. Clemson and Florida State are the least likely to be swayed, since they are probably looking for an exit hatch out of the ACC once the exit fees for leaving the ACC Grant of Rights. North Carolina is also probably very reluctant as they likely will be part of the next line of conference realignment and have no stress at all about their future.”

      • It adds to the ratio for approval on exiting in the future is what I’ve read. The theory is they would be effectively adding 3 no votes to overcome if they preferred to leave and pay a penalty as the GOR nears its end.
FSU would pay $120 million and need a majority approval to depart as part of the fine print. But in 3 years they may payout $60 million and still need majority approval to depart. So by adding 3 teams with no connection beyond hoping to maintain P5 status, FSU et Al would be making their own departure more difficult in the future for a few extra $$ now and adding a lot of travel to the west coast.
I wonder why any ACC school is voting yes. They would be better off trying to poach Maryland and WVU if they want to add schools.
Stanford is delusional and their Olympic sports will suffer dramatically if they get into ACC for all sports. Cal probably goes bankrupt and SMU is just burning donor cash without results for at least a decade while foregoing $280 million in revenue over 7 years.
It’s all so insane, and then to think these are rational people trusted to make these decisions.

      • They want to break the grant-of-rights that runs all the way through 2036 because they won’t make nearly as much money as the new B1G (Fox) and SEC (ESPN starting in 2024) and risk being left out of the top-tier in the next phase of re-alignment.

The ACC wants to bring in Calford and SMU at a reduced or non-share of revenue, so that they can pass that extra money on to the other schools to boost the $ without throwing out the grant-of-rights. This would lock the teams in further with three additional schools that would be NO votes to dissolve the current grant-of-rights. It’s a desperate move to fight off a Pac-12 like mutiny and tear-down.

Florida State and Clemson (and probably Miami) want to join the SEC. North Carolina, NC State, and Virginia want into the new B1G. If they find a way out the other teams will all jump to one or the other (SEC of B1G) in a heartbeat.

ACC is probably toast, it’s just a matter of time, even if they landed Calford/SMU. ESPN and Fox would rather see the ACC dissolve and have those bigger brand teams form super-conferences with the B1G/SEC, so they are sitting on their hands and not budging with the grant-of-rights.

That’s why many believe if the Pac-4 stay together, their best play would be to piece together a new 16+ team west/east league with the best of the AAC and MWC over the next few years, because in that scenario (super-conferences) they would want to be in position to grab as many from the ACC as they can as it goes down.

This is also why the B12 isn’t trying to expand to the west with any of the Pac-4 or SDSU, as they see the demise of the ACC as imminent. They are banking that if the ACC goes down, that they’ll be able to consolidate enough value to stay in the “Power 3” of the future rather than it getting reduced all the way down to the Power 2 (most likely).

        • Thank you OhioBeav and ZenBeav… makes much more sense now… and at the same time leaves me feeling more concerned then ever over the future of da Beavs. Was hoping for Big12 because of competition and power status. But Zen makes sense in why would the B12 make more moves right now.

    • I read an article yesterday that said ESPN has a clause that they can renegotiate the media contract if the ACC goes below 15 schools. But even if they added calford and smu there was no guarantee that they would raise the price even though thats what is getting reported.

  33. 1

Early week prediction is 56-17 Oregon State if they come together in the second half. If the team doesn’t hit their stride by the second half like USC did, then the score will be more like 32-24.

      • Sounds about right; gotta wonder, though, how much JS opens the playbook. Usually I’d expect him to save a lot for later but wonder if being on CBS will alter that kind of thinking. Either way, we’ll see DJ’s arm for a couple long bombs.

        • The beauty is that they have to respect DJ’s athleticism also. I hope doesn’t run at all, but he can if he needs or wants to and that’s good enough.

  34. As the camp has progressed it is interesting that we don’t really hear much emphasis on DJU needing to be superhuman as the leader and qb. It sounds like he has fit into the locker room nicely and been accepted but not hailed as the savior of the program so much as you might think for a 5* coming
To Corvallis. I wonder what his thoughts are on the Dline compared to Clemson in practices.

  35. 2
    4

Unpopular opinion: Utah is way overrated this year. Their OL is mediocre and they lose a lot on defense. Especially if Rising isn’t 100%, they’re more like an 8-9 win team than a conference championship threat.

      • I think Rosing inadvertently let the cat out of the bag at PAC12 media days and said they want to send Coach Whit out on top, interviewer caught it and followed up but Rising sort of backed off the notion of Whit retiring by saying he wasn’t going anywhere. Too late, no take backs for Rising on that one. And I’d guess this is his coaching motivational angle for staff focus and team focus for this year.
Too bad for them the Beavs will end their ride pretty early and the last half of their schedule will be daunting when they can’t lose another game.

  36. 4
    3

It’s weird seeing ESPN links in this thread. People are still reading that site after they played an enormous part in destroying college football?

  37. Kind of pathetic that we have the second smallest stadium in the P5, are coming off our 2nd or third best season ever, with a ton of hype around the program, and it still looks like there are a lot of seats not sold for the home opener. The stadium should have sold out weeks ago for every home game. I get it is an FCS foe, but this is what shows the differences between good fanbases and great ones. Most big time CFB programs, even in small towns like Clemson, are packing their stadiums that are 2x the size of ours nearly every game, and we can’t reliably sell out 35,000 seats? Come on! We need every single person we can going to these games.

    • 2

Inflation is hurting everyone right now. 61% of America is living paycheck to paycheck. If I were in Oregon or within a days drive, I would be making the trip. I would go to the Colorado game if the economy was better.

      • 2
        1

Offer family.group, lower prices. People that have paid more already might/should understand the importance of a full stadium. OTOH, UC/Davis? They lost last year to Montana State – a team the Beavs obliterated. If budgeting for only 1 game, this wouldn’t be it.

    • We don’t have a “great” fanbase. I think many OSU alumni choose to other things with their time and that “great” fan bases iften have fans that live very vicariously through their teams.

Fall weekends are beautiful and are great for fishing and hunting and biking. Hard for me to give up that much time (including 5.5 hours drive time each way) when i could be doing things….the only thing i liked about late start times is the ability to go fishing, then come back and catch much if the game.

        • 1
          1

Its two days each game for me most likely, dependent on start time. I don’t want to do 11 hours on the road in one day for a game…

And I’m not going to spend that much time watching them obliterate UC Davis when I could watch 20 minutes of highlights later. The opportunity cost is not worth it to me with other choices available.

    • 3
      1

Weather and kickoff time have a lot to do with attendance. It’s hard on people to drive from let’s say Portland for a 730 kickoff time in more often then not shitty Weather and get home after midnight. Add in the shitty tailgate/no re-entry policy makes it even more difficult.

      • Not to defend the new no re-entry policy but we are among the last to implement the policy. It is not something unique to the beavs

    • 4
      2

We can do what the University of Phil did when the TTATT opened up, and just have someone buy up all the empty seats. Nobody questions all the empty seats, because it’s a sell-out.
      Done.

You’re a “student”. Make some friends and bring them… can’t wear your green and yellow though as we all know you’re a dick larping….

      • Student turnout isn’t the problem. They take their entire amount of allotted tickets every game these days, and are loud and proud. It’s older fans , likely such as you, that are the problem. They don’t show up in numbers and when they do, they usually just sit there silently, mouth agape, rather than, you know, contributing to the homefield advantage through making noise.

I like how this site is marketed as “a critical view of Oregon state athletics” but as soon as we get good at football any type of continued criticism is now shot down and labeled as dick fan disinfo… there are some real childish “men” on this board

        • Follow the bread crumbs, this dood is a one man disinformation campaign; this has nothing to do with a critical view of beaver sports

        • 3
          1

          What continued criticism?
Criticism has at least some depth. These are simply declarative statements tinged with a weird tone of feigned disenchantment.
How many of us know what true disappointment looks like, do you think?
This team is at a point where only injuries and mental errors separate them from first place. They match up well against everyone on both sides of the ball. And it’s not like the offense was terrible… with a third-year redshirt walk-on QB leading it.
It is college football, though. And Beavs know things happen. But the downside is 8 wins, with injuries and mental errors. 9 or 10 wins are a safe pick, because the ball is still shaped funny. The upside is open, for once, if everything bounces our way, and we play basic, mistake-free football.
It’s a year where, “Where were you when wide-left happened?” could be a future question, and we could be on either side of it.

    • Studentbeaver:

      Not a fair comparison:

While Oregon State and Clemson are roughly the same age & have comparable student population, there’s significant differences in their football programs.

Clemson has a lifetime winning percentage in football of 62%

      Clemson has three national titles

Clemson’s current head coach is in his 15th season with
      a lifetime W-L percentage of 80%

All that heavily influences whether fans will pay to fill their 82,000 seat stadium, as well as whether monied alumni will freely donate to their program

If we were remotely equivalent, would we be able to fill our stadium consistently?

      Absolutely.

  38. 3
    2

As much as I want to downvote you…. I have to agree. I think the GA years really sucked the life out of most of our fanbase. I know people that were diehard beaver fans, season tickets and all that, that stopped going to games during those years and got comfortable with the “I’ll just watch the game on my tv” way of life. On top of that, our fanbase has always struggled to be serious when it comes to football. Just look at this site for example; every other team in the pac has a massive following on 247 but a large group of our fans refuse to pay just a few bucks a month to be apart of those message boards and therefore we’re divided and our following looks smaller. Other fans are so quick to pay money to be apart of their respective teams and communities but our fans are so stubborn at times and any financial increase is considered bad.

I also think it has to do with our school refusing to be innovative in any way athletically. Some examples being jerseys, game day atmosphere, and social media presence. I think most fans would prefer those throwback jerseys we wore against ASU to be in regular rotation, better music and lighting effects at games, ect. I don’t want party in the USA or TNT before the 4th quarter, I want something that get our guys fired up. If OSU really wants to increase popularity in football, why not give the people what they want? I for one would love to see them have some live music before games; they could include concert tickets with tickets to the game and have local performers play on the practice fields before every game. It seams like OSU always falls short in marketing compared to other programs

    • Yep, even just take a look at the Utah or SEC fan message boards. Particularly the SEC fan boards are incredibly active, and have posts every few minutes every day all year round.

You have 5-6 days a year where you have the chance to support Beav football in person in Oregon, yet even in spite of recent successes, people are not clamoring to be a part of it. I get live sports attendance is trending downwards almost everywhere, but if we really want to be able to claim we belong in the P5, and are a big time program, it starts with the basics, like being able to sell out your 35,000 capacity stadium reliably when you have a top 20 program.

    • 1
      1

Maybe someone can get a grant for a retrospective study to see if other fan bases have quality alternative(s) like AB’s and see if there’s a correlation.

      • 2
        1

looking at utah specifically, I found a couple alternative message boards: Ute Hub and UteFans.net

Looks like Ute Hubs recent topics have at most 10 comments per topic with only a few unique users. UteFans.net had about 600 comments on their realignment thread. So both significantly less than AB.

Meanwhile Utahs 247 site has nearly 18k posts on their realignment thread while the OSU 247 site has just over 4.5K. I believe both realignment threads on AB were in the 1-2k range right?

        • Sure, good point. It’s one team though; more comparable to UO. Controlling at least for crappy start times like BB mentioned above, how many teams do we have left? What if we also control for markets that have one team which has had some success and been respectable for 10-20 years and second team which is now ascendant but was hot garbage for 5-15 years? Maybe 5-10 teams in the FBS? Fans fall off the bandwagon faster than the get back on; same goes for networks and start times.

  39. 5
    2

“Particularly the SEC fan boards are incredibly active, and have posts every few minutes every day all year round.
Sounds like something you would do if you are sentenced to live in SEC country.

  40. 3
    3

As of right now, it’s looking like the UCLA game (Homecoming), is the only one that is somewhat close to being sold out, at least according to the seat map on the school ticket page.

I’d agree with a lot of the counter points to my original point if our stadium wasn’t so small. It shouldn’t be this hard to get 35,000 butts in seats (More like 25,000, because the students do turn out well at about 10,000 per game, subtracted from the total capacity) for a top 20 CFB program.

    • I think one reason ppl may not be persuaded by your contention that the “fan base is the problem” (which is why the stadium can not be filled) is that the only criticism raised in the discussion has been marketing efforts.

Fans who purchase tickets don’t have decision making power over that.

  41. Great JoeBeaver show on 1240 KEJO today.

Long interviews with Ted Robinson and then Jim Wilson. Tumwater Dave called in at the beginning of the second hour so a good rundown of info on the state of PAC12 and the team from Jim Wilson.

        4

        Yes…. Don’t see how that’s relevant?

You do realize a sizable portion of the student population lives in Corvallis year round, right? Most upperclassmen move into town from their old dorms or apartments in July or August when new leases start. Only the Freshman have little to no presence over summer.

Regardless, my point that the stadium not being sold out won’t be the fault of the students was a reply to Alpha that I posted as a new comment by accident rather than a reply to Alpha who said that if we want to sellout games I need to “make some friends” as a student and bring them.

It’s annoying how much this site is skeptical of me being a student despite never saying anything insulting against OSU as a school or team solely because I don’t agree with the hive mind here.

NiceBeav, good intuition. I was wondered why these long paragraphs of nonsense were so familiar. Now it all makes sense. Even his defenses are the same as greatswammi, lol.

          • What exactly have I said that is outlandish or trolling in nature? All you’ve done is accuse me of being a troll because I don’t agree with your opinions or that getting 10+ wins is a sure thing. There doesn’t seem to be a way to view IP anyway so I don’t know where that is coming from.

Ultimately, you’re not going to believe me regardless, so my word doesn’t really matter, but I am an incoming grad student at OSU who also did my 4 years of undergrad there, graduating with my Bachelor’s this past June.

          • How are you even supposedly seeing my IP? Don’t know who you’re talking about, but I’m sure you won’t believe me anyways.

What can I do to prove to you all that I’m not a troll? What exactly have I said that is very outlandish?

        • Did the student section for the early games last year sell out – and was it actually full?

I was in school 04-09 and we had some very good teams in those years, but the student section was always lackluster until classes started. There might have been “sell outs” but they were rarely if ever full.

          • 1
            1

I think it’s changed a bit since then. The student body has grown a lot but the student section capacity hasn’t. 35k enrolled last fall. Means more people stick around for the summer term and go to the early football games. But yeah, the first game after move in day is packed.

But the enthusiasm of the student section has waned as well. Hard to keep them after halftime unless the product is good.

  43. 5

Part of the problem is the pricing. $80 for not great seats isn’t a good deal. I thought about going but man that is too steep unless they were killer seats. Everything near the 50 is sold out, so for me I have a better seat at home.

    • They’re running a deal through oregon community credit union 4 seat 4 hotdogs and 4 drinks for $100 in general admission or upper deck on the new side. If someone is looking.

      • Bam, that is a smoking good deal if you don’t have vertigo!

The seats on the new side though , holy balls! Maybe once my kid graduates I can look again but they are eye popping.

What exactly have I said that is outlandish or trolling in nature? All you’ve done is accuse me of being a troll because I don’t agree with your opinions or that us getting 10+ wins is a sure thing. There doesn’t seem to be a way to view IP anyway so I don’t know where that is coming from.

Ultimately, you’re not going to believe me regardless, so my word doesn’t really matter, but I am an incoming grad student at OSU who also did my 4 years of undergrad there, graduating with my Bachelor’s this past June.

      studentbeaver,

You’re being attacked not for what you’re saying, but by what you’re implying. You’re saying an 8 win season is more plausible and reasonable, but what the bloggers on this site read is nepotism, pessimism, mediocrity, and the “old guard” way of thinking with low expectations. I have been on this blog long enough to know this group was tired of hearing the whole, “Riley is the best we can do in Corvallis” and “we’ll never be a consistent 10+ win season team in Corvallis”. The “hype” or rather, the excitement and opportunity for this team to get to a 10+ regular season record is if everything goes right without slipping up in games. Many of us have said if the team can get past WSU, Arizona, and Oregon on the road and be undefeated at home, then a 12 win season is very likely to happen. If we slip in any of those games, then yes, you’re right, an 8 win season is the floor and Vegas agrees with you. After 5 seasons of Jonathan Smith teams playing, knowing what we get from Ben Gulbranson “as a known commodity”(coach Smith’s words, not mine) means DJU has jumped past Ben and is most likely a better option than we had last season. Another thought, Aidan is battling for the backup position against Ben Gulbranson. This means he’s right there with Ben in being able to run the offense as a game manager who has a cannon for an arm. He’s a true freshman and is already at the level of a R-Jr? Future looks very bright.

Don’t take things people say personally; as it will gnaw at you. If you’re right, then everyone stating a 10-12 win season will eat crow at the end of the season and acknowledge you were right. I would make your comment, then let it go and move on to the next topic.

  45. SEC fan, “Oh yeah? Just wait until you see Georgia and Alabama and LSU play…” yawn.

It was the first time Florida had opened the season on the road outside of Florida since 1991. And I can’t imagine how many times they have ever gone west of Mississippi for any non conference game if ever. It has been fixed all along by these insane cupcake schedules the SEC hides behind, and there are so few opportunities to see how fraudulent they are outside of their own insulated SEC bubbles.

Good for the Utes but they didn’t look like an dominant team. Rising may be that much of a difference but he likely won’t be as mobile or sharp even by the end of the month.

Beavs should be in good shape if they stick with the running game and pick their spots for play action.

  46. Utah shows how good coaching can overcome an injured starting QB. Hopefully they’ll have a QB controversy on their hands when they come to Corvallis.

well at least beavs can finally move on. While beavs baseball team was at LSU, Lsu had representatives meet with osu players and tired to poach them, the players werent named, but its fairly easy to guess. Mp and bjw talked about it on yesterdays show. Its just going to get worse from here.

    • Iowa football coach was on rich eisen yesterday and suggested lower tier football programs shouldn’t play power 5 teams due to this same issue.

  48. 6
    4

God riddance to those programs and the Stanford snobbery. Without USC sabotaging anything west coast, and UW/UO always pining for greener pastures and now Stanford’s snobbery finally out of the way, perhaps there is a chance to rebuild west coast football/sports conference with teams who actually want to link and be loyal to each other. It may be a financial hit but the remaining schools should have some leverage and more control in the processes than before and take leadership roles.

I expect Big12 to come calling but I’m actually not sure they should take it.

Is it better to be on the hook to travel all over the Midwest for conference games that no one can road trip to, or begin with new schools in your regional footprint that I’ve already been pet of your world in some respects? And take your chance with Playoff appearances and recruiting?

I think anything west coast regional gets a bunch of transfers from the heavy travel schools that have just departed. Student athletes will reset the board of realignment within 3-4 years and won’t go to schools with such crazy travel demands.

Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA, UW, Oregon all will feel the pin of student athletes in all sports besides football transferring out in larger percentages than they expect. I think OSU can be a beneficiary of many of those students.
Going to the Big12 may negate that. Big12 would be a mistake I think at this point because none of it will last beyond another 2 years anyway. SEC and Big10 will attempt to poach and expand for their new tv deals by then.
I say go get the 6 best schools from AAC and MWC and hope for the best with minimum numbers and maximum revenue in the short term. And try to hire the MWC commish to replace Kliakoff.
-Keep the PAC12 assets and the 2 year exception grace period as a life preserver.
-Vote all revenues cutoff from all departing schools for this year as a war chest to bring in MWC schools.
    -Lawsuits filed asap
-Review any possible Apple streaming deals still on the table even at partial rates as a beginning point for them to enter the college landscape using PAC12 network.

      1

I think what you’re missing with the Big 12 is that there are a lot of ex-PAC teams there now, plus BYU. We could still play the Arizona schools, WSU, and the mountain schools every year with only 1-2 trips to Texas and the midwest.

  49. Amazing with just how completely terrible ASU looked last night that they are the team with the brighter future than OSU.
They were Gary Andersen level bad against Southern Utah

  50. “IRVING, Texas – American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco has issued the following statement on today’s announcement by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

SMU has shared our pursuit of competition at the highest level throughout its time in the American Athletic Conference. President Gerald Turner and Athletic Director Rick Hart have been among our strongest advocates and leaders both internally and externally. We wish them well.

We have known that today’s move was a possibility, which has allowed us time to investigate a number of options, including consideration of the larger group of institutions in the Pacific time zone. We have concluded, however, that the best way to proceed for our outstanding student-athletes is to not look westward. Instead, we plan to focus any expansion efforts on schools that allow for sensible and sustainable competition and student-athlete well-being within our strong geographic footprint. We look forward to continued success as a leading FBS conference”

    Well, MWC, here we come?

  51. Not surprised at the conference falling apart but the amount of desperation certainly is.

I still don’t think the MW is a good option. The Mountain West won’t fall apart in the next realignment because no one wants their schools. It’ll be a conference out east and the AAC will be there to pick up the scraps. Those scraps will be better than anything in the MW. So I’m still advocating for the AAC.

In any case now, the Beavs and Cougs need to find a way to keep the NCAA tourney credits from the PAC12 for themselves going forward. Assume the PAC12 network is worth zero now.

Maybe there is a way to merge the conferences and still keep the PAC12 entity alive. Maybe the PAC2 takes on half of the AAC to stay alive legally as a conference but in reality acts as one conference. That way the NCAA tourney credits keep flowing. Beavs get the media rev and split the old pac12 tourney credits with WSU.

          3

AAC isn’t a good fit culturally. I doubt we want them or they want us. I’m sure all parties involved know this, so it would be a hold your nose and do it type thing, which never works out well. MWC is the best fit. It’s just awful, irrelevant football (so is the AAC), so there’s that. We just got the ultimate Lucy and Charlie Brown. The moment we become great at football, Lucy pulls away the football, and even worse, the entire sport. I blame OSU “leaders” who just thought they could add nothing to the PAC and coast by with mediocrity as everyone else in the conference was trying. This went on for like 4 decades, and you are going to eventually pay for that. It’s why I stressed all of this, that we shouldn’t settle for mediocrity, many years ago. I believe I brought it up several times that we were adding nothing to the conference and would eventually end up in the MWC because of that……….

  52. What’s going on with ESPN? Just saw it got dropped from my in-laws cable package and they’ve gone dark on Charter today, as well, according to the news.

I hope the entity dies a horrible death.

      • Angry, if OSU goes MWC, will you close down the site? I suspect the transition period would be of interest to people and spark a lot of posts the first year at least, but as you say, the sports product is going to decrease in quality. And if the MWC champ doesn’t get a path to a very good bowl game, then there’s little reason to watch.

      • This is concerning as far as scheduling, how do you schedule any games for next year when most teams have their schedules planned out years in advance? This is just crazy and legitimately may be the last year of Beaver football if somebody doesn’t get off their ass and get us moved into another conference. We can’t play the Coug’s 8 times and call it a ‘season’!

  53. 18

I feel like much of the angst around this realignment situation for a number of schools is short-sighted. Deep down, doesn’t it make sense that this train is just getting started? Within a decade, would anybody say they were surprised when a set of 30ish schools breaks away into some super-division where they play for their own national title every year and enjoy the majority of the TV dollars? Do the honest fans of Stanford, Cal, SMU, Utah, Arizona State, NC State, Iowa State, Virginia, Nebraska, UCLA, and yes Oregon State, etc. really think that they’re going to be in that group of elite football teams? That’s lunacy. It’ll be blue bloods only – and we’re not that.

So where will all those, dare I say, “mid major” teams be once the football elites leave them in the dust? Will Cal-Berkeley really be excited to be a part of the ACC then? Will UCLA really be excited to travel to Minnesota every other year? While it sucks to be left without a dance partner in the short term, there is a tremendous opportunity here for Oregon State and Wazzu to try and set themselves up NOW for future stability and success to be best positioned when the final domino falls within the next 5-10 years. Work with the MWC to create a new Pac-12 (work with the lawyers to keep the brand so that they can keep the money from the lingering prior arrangements), build your new conference on the idea of regional stability and pitch local matchups and limited travel to your prospective student athletes and their families. If I’m a parent of a player based in California or Oregon, it might be a better pitch to me to go to OSU or SDSU and be able to drive and see my child play for most of the games in a season/college career than it would be to go to Cal, where I’m going to have to buy plane tickets to Pittsburgh and Blacksburg, Va., and Boston to see them play.

In addition, there’s an opportunity here to build a new TV deal that includes some significant revenue incentives for subscription based packages. The reality is that more and more fans have cut the cord and could care less about network TV. Amazon and Apple and YouTube are all going to be big players in the future of sports media, and maybe we can be on the front edge of that and still find a way to provide steady (and possibly significant) revenue to our athletic department.

I feel like OSU prides itself on it’s campus and sports teams feeling like family. When I went to school there, it was awesome to have the small-town, rural campus feel. That’s attractive to a lot of kids and their families. Double down on what makes us great, don’t try to be something we’re not.

Who knows, once the football blue bloods get their way, maybe the NCAA separates them and gives them their own national championship, and the rest of the current FBS schools that couldn’t get into the cool kids club will be able to compete for a national championship of their own. I just think that this hasty realignment gold rush that teams like ASU, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and now Stanford and Cal have participated in will ultimately leave them in worse situations down the road. I’m hopeful that OSU’s leadership can be forward-thinking (for once) and position this school’s athletic teams (not just football) in the best position to compete for wins, but also for student athletes that compete at a high level but also share our values.

    • It will likely be a real challenge to keep the team focused, but Smith and staff have been great at that the last year or two and there’s a genuine “team first” culture that might be particularly helpful this season.

Hopefully there mindset is to grudge fuck the deserters and take the PAC championship.

  54. “Oregon State’s AD Scott Barnes along with their president and VP will hold a zoom press conference at 10 to discuss conference realignment. They will be taking reporter questions.”

Anyone have time to watch and give the cliff note version?

    • 8
      1

“Everything had been on hold as the schools waited for Stanford and Cal to make a decision.”

What a load of horseshit. Stanford and Cal had made their decision long ago, and the only reason they needed to have this Pac idea in their back pocket is to keep up the appearance of leverage in their ACC negotiations.
Really hate that OSU/WSU are willing participants in letting other teams give them the shaft week after week, month after month.

      • 11

“And they won’t make that decision until clarity comes on the assets and liabilities, an intricate process that could take several weeks.”

This makes it sound like everybody has been sitting on their ass and waiting for all other teams to leave before they start to figure out the legalities of the remaining assets/liabilities.

Bottom line, the Beavs and Cougs can’t afford leave the Pac because they’ll lose a significant share of the remaining conference assets.
        Play the long game.
Cutting Kliavkoff and Luck should be the first order of business. They’re dead weight and no longer working in the best interests of the conference. You could argue Luck never did work in the best interest of the conference and was only serving to help Stanford move to the ACC.

In my opinion, outside of a Big12 invite, the reverse merger with the MWC and letting Navarez steer the ship is the easiest path forward. If we’re talking about absorbing the entire conference into the Pac umbrella, the whole buyout issue could be avoided.
AAC only makes sense from a financial perspective, but it doesn’t fit with the key values OSU/WSU have identified with playing regionally and minimizing travel for the athletes.
Teams should work out a revenue sharing agreement for Non-Conference games and seek out the highest paying body bag games available. Knowing only 1 team from the new conference will likely every make it into the CFP from year to year, it doesn’t matter if you lose 3 non-con games. You just need to win the conference to get in. 1 out of 14 teams will make the playoff each year. That’s better odds for getting into the Championship game than the Beavs have ever had, in reality

        • That’s some industry insiders take on what needs to be done. I know WSU said they had lawyers looking into bylaws about 3 weeks ago. I can’t believe we’re not doing the same.

          • In some ways, I’m actually glad the uncertainty is over and OSU and WSU can now chart their own path rather than relying on the departed. This has been a total freakshow to be sure. I wouldn’t be opposed to OSU and WSU suing the other schools, conference and the networks involved in this mess. They all seemed to go out of their way to cause the most damage possible, to their own student-athletes, to other schools and to the Pac-12. People have sued and won with less. Especially since the departed are collectively bringing in a lot more than they would have if they had stayed in the Pac-12 – they see it as justification, but it also points to other entities seeing value in destroying the Pac-12. Like business A buying a competitor in order to put it out of business and eliminate competition. So perhaps anti-trust rules may apply.

          • Outcome of WSU lawyer findings would be the same or similar to OSU’s lawyers. Why not save the cash when the WSU lawyers are looking into the exact issue the Beavs would want to?

          • Turns out it may have been better for WSU/OSU to have hired a legal team rather than anything they contributed to Oliver Luck.
BTW, how long should it take to analyze the legal docs? Seems like a lot should have already been done in that area.

        • I’m inclined to agree with you on everything you have written. As much as I hate what has happened to the PAC12 over the last month, the MWC is no-pushover. Several of those teams have administered ass-beatings to the Beavs on a number of occasions. And like you indicated, at least one team will always make it to the CFP out of the conference if kept as the ‘PAC12’.

      • Reading between the lines, it sounds like Barnes was exploring other options, but holding out hope for Calford. I don’t think they really added that much leverage to any of the discussions, except maybe the AAC based purely on the timing of their announcement today.

        • The AAC may have been in play, if Calfurd stuck around. It would have lessened travel by a little, and the media markets involved would have been more considerable.

  55. 1
    1

Haven’t seen this talked about: anyone know if we’ll be joining the MWC for all sports? If so, I guess that is the end of our baseball dynasty, too. It was going to end because of Mitch anyway, but if our baseball program joins the MWC then it is toast.

    • Initially Barnes said all the sports would compete in the same conference. Recently it changed to do what’s best for each sport.

Baseball needs to go the Big West Conference. Has Fullerton, Irvine, Long Beach St, Santa Barbara. Enough relevant baseball schools to keep going.

      • Why not merge with both?
A new Pac/MWC/Big West conference would put everyone in California in a big way. The Olympics would have a much easier time finding relevant opponents. Assuming most players in the footprint come from California, parents and family get that many more opportunities to see games. Football can be itself, and the guaranteed ncaa units distributed for the Big West auto-bid could be increased in their distributions.

So if they up their revenues and are visible on demand, like most of us want, playing relevant games in those sports, we’re all good. We can even treat the baseball side like we did in the Pac for years, with the JV part being the MWC.

    • 7
      1

We already play a few MWC teams each year. What’s a few more? They cant be that much worse than half of the former Pac12 teams. And then schedule some non con series with former Pac12 teams. We’d still have a pretty similar mix of opponents on the schedule.

    • MWC teams that play baseball as of this season: Air Force, Fresno State, Hawai’i (not in MWC for baseball, but they have a team), Nevada, New Mexico, SDSU, SJSU, UNLV.

I agree with NiceBeaver that we could certainly stomach this league schedule and combine it with some tougher non-conference opponents and be just fine. TBH, our baseball “dynasty” hasn’t been that dominant under Canham (haven’t won a conference title since ’17), so we’ve got some work to do there no matter what conference we’re in.

  56. So if the MWC decides to reverse merge with us I assume their media contract will desolve also. That sets us up with a chance at getting an Apple deal as we still would have the production side taken care of and they would distribute the content. Let’s say they give half the amount that the Pac12 was offered with the same subscription increases, that’s definitely better then the MWC deal and getting around to what we were making before possibly. ? Am I high in thinking something that would work?

    • You’re on a really good trip if you think all of that is going to come true. A reverse merger seems very likely now. Apple deal is a no. If they made an offer, it’d be purely subscription based. No guaranteed money.

      • There would be a guarantee, just not a huge one.
The low benchmark in the previous deal would still pay the same, it would just be 100-150% of the guarantee, not 50%.

  57. Oregon State AD Scott Barnes on a Zoom right now: “Although we had hoped for a better outcome here, this outcome certainly was anticipated. Our plans relative to this consideration have been ongoing.”

  58. 5
    2

Man, you knew this was coming but it’s really hard to sit back and not think our leadership was outplayed at every single turn. I get that we might not have had many chips to use but goddammit, I’m tired of the PC responses and the “golly gee” approach this leadership has taken thru this whole thing. Got caught with their pants down and continue to look inept as fuck. Show some fucking passion Barnes. I feel like the meme with the guy poking the person on the ground “c’mon, do something”. At this point, I’m not even sure the AAC will work out and this fucking clown show of a leadership team might boggle their way out of a MWC invite and we end up in the Big Sky. Sad

    • AAC is off the table. They met last week with the MWC as did WSU. AAC would have sucked to be honest. A few million more a year for 10x the travel.

      • Most MWC AD’s bring in more money than the AAC AD’s, too (despite having a worse media deal). MWC is in a better place financially. The only thing AAC has going for it is locations near big metro areas and a better media deal (which can be rectified if the MWC dissolves).

      • Shit, just saw the statement from the AAC commissioner. Travel would’ve sucked a bit but much better conference than the MWC imo. Oh well. Enjoy this season folks. Have a feeling we’re gonna be seeing decommitments left and right soon and Dec/Jan could be a blood bath.

  59. Okey dokey, since some type of merge with MW is apparently what’s going to happen here, and since football is the only thing that matters any more let’s have a look at the teams:

    Air Force
    Boise State
    Fresno State
    Colorado State
    Nevada
    UNLV
    New Mexico
    San Diego State
    San Jose State
    Wyoming
    Hawaii

Air Force, Boise, Fresno, SDSU have had success recently, Colorado State is in shit mode but you’d think they’d start to trend back up.

Wonder if there’s any chance they try to bring in Gonzaga for basketball and baseball only.

  60. 7
    2

OSU will be the only west coast school with great facilities and be able to recruit with the idea of keeping travel to a minimum. This will become the best advantage in recruiting against all of the departed schools.
I expect there will be more student athletes leaving the departed schools over travel than leaving OSU over P5 status questions. Even if OSU goes to MWC, they will have a great shot at playoffs.
The big issue is coaching staff stability and salaries over the long run. I think there needs to be a short term (5 year window) commitment to keep as many coaches settled to stay as possible until the next phase of realignment implodes all of college football.
If the football program can tread water for 5 years with no major dips in recruiting or coaching staff losses, Beavs should have a great shot to playoffs.

    • I think for the Olympic sports that might be a truth but people really don’t understand how important playing against P5 talent is for most of the athletes in the major 4 sports. I pray to be wrong but we will see a pretty seismic change to football roster for sure starting Dec/Jan. It’s already hard enough to keep players now with NIL while bringing in $30mill of TV revenue. All those high 3 and low 4 star athletes we’ve been getting from CA and TX the last few years that also have offers to P5 schools will most certainly be moving OSU down the list. Especially in football where the travel won’t nearly be as bad as the other sports and we all know football is most important for money. But hey, maybe we can become super dominant in rowing now that the Stanford athletes won’t want to travel as much.

        • Until you become the stepping stone. BSU hasn’t really reclaimed their national relevance since the days of the Peterson era unless I’m mistaken. Fiesta Bowl in 2014 and since then, despite good records, their best bowl was actually the LV Bowl. Perhaps that will be our best fate…consistently win 9 games a year, become a stepping stone for up and coming coaches, and play in mid/low tier Bowl games. Of course, we’ll need to gut most every sport we have to offset the massive reduction of revenue but maybe that’s the reality of our situation.

          • How many guys transfer out of BSU, though? I don’t really follow it, but I don’t see a lot of portal losses for them of guys going to “bigger” programs.

  61. It will likely be a real challenge to keep the team focused, but Smith and staff have been great at that the last year or two and there’s a genuine “team first” culture that might be particularly helpful this season.

Hopefully there mindset is to grudge fuck the deserters and take the PAC championship.

    • The buzzards will definitely start to come through back channels now to pick off what they can at the end of the year. Hopefully players know that the ones who play well will be offered a way out. Can’t mail it in and think they’ll be picked.

Smith addressed this and the players and other coaches have addressed this. He said, it offers no real extra motivation because the opposing players/coaches had nothing to do with it.

      • “Smith addressed this and the players and other coaches have addressed this. He said, it offers no real extra motivation because the opposing players/coaches had nothing to do with it.”

That’s good, that’s more mature than I feel right now. I like their mindset that [paraphrasing] “every down the score is 0-0.” He keeps them from getting too high or low, and that mindset helped them come back in the CW last year.

PHIL STEELE REPORT (Note: #rankings are power ratings in the top 25, not actual poll rankings).

The Beavers last played San Jose State in 2015, winning 35-21. Beavers have won 4 straight over the Spartans since 1987, covering 4 of last 5 since 1982. Favorite is 3-2 SU since ’82 but just 1-4 ATS. Only prior trip here (‘88), Oregon State (+10) pulled the 41-27 outright upset. San Jose State won the first 2 meetings in 1979 & ‘82 (1-1 ATS) & was favored in the first 4 (2-2 SU & 1-3 ATS). Last met in 2015, Spartans (+7) led 21-14 HT but trailed 35-21 into a scoreless 4Q. San Jose State does have a game under their belt, but it was a clash with USC and I leaned with San Jose State +30 vs USC. At halftime San Jose State had a 13-9 FD edge but explosive true frosh WR Zachariah Branch (PS#1) had 232 all-purpose yds (KR & rec TD). USC led 21-14 at halftime but did lead 56-21 before a San Jose State TD with 5:04 left in non-covering 56-28 win. Oregon State was able to focus on this opener as they only have UC Davis on deck. Oregon State QB DJ Uiagalelei and RB Damien Martinez should form a potent combo and San Jose State lost the bulk of their top-notch D-line this year so the Beavers should be able to run it. Jonathan Smith is 12-1 at home the last two years but just 1-5 ATS as an AF. San Jose State had a RB emerge in Quali Conley last week with 108 yds on just 6 carries and the run D was respectable allowing 160 yards. Brennan is 5-1 ATS vs P5 teams the last 6 years. The situation favors Oregon State but the large numbers, venue and angles all favor the Spartans. The Beavers are an automatic play at home but 1-7 ATS as an AF the last 9 years. My computer has Oregon State winning by 17 but with only a 93 yard edge and I like the Underdog Spartans plus the points here.

    • Just a preview.
Lots of OSU ties in that game with the coaching staff at SJSU. Wonder how many times that will be mentioned during the broadcast.
Sorftof like how frequently they had to remind the audience that Kenny Dillingham went to ASU. It was like a Dillingham infomercial, with a football game on the side.

      • There was a really dismal article, I think it was the athletic recently, about the sorry state of money sjsu gets from their deal, no training table, poor facilities, etc etc, something I guess we can look forward to down the road

        • Found it, here’s a snipit…
“Brennan is well aware that San Jose State is viewed as one of the most challenging jobs in the FBS, but he will never make any excuses. He accentuates the positives, but it’s clear to anyone who spends time with the program that there are significant hurdles — starting with something as basic as feeding the team.

In the Monday morning staff meeting, Tanner Schultheis, the program’s director of football operations, lays out the food situation for the Spartans players.

Breakfast is the the only meal of the day that is served to the football players in the Spartan Athletics Center. They’ll get swipe cards for lunch and dinner that can be used for meals on campus, but that’s a far cry from what occurs at Power 5 programs, where players are provided with three meals per day and nutrition plans targeted specifically for their needs.

That’s a major obstacle San Jose State has yet to clear.

“(It) is the best we can do right now,” Brennan tells his staff. “I’m glad we’re getting them fed here in the morning. The other part of that is it’s a complicated problem.”

The “complication” is cost. Cash rules above all else in college football, and San Jose State simply doesn’t have enough of it. The Spartans are one of the worst-resourced schools in FBS. It might sound weird to others at the university as Brennan sits in a new facility that costs roughly $60 million dollars, but the Spartans are drastically behind in the sport’s never-ending arms race.

The goal post on the practice field is broken. It’s August and the field, which is shared with the men’s and women’s soccer programs, is already brown. But if it comes down to fixing that or raising money to buy food for the players, food takes precedence.

The Spartan Athletics Center (Antonio Morale / The Athletic)
Those inequities show up in other ways too. There are only two full-time strength coaches, one full-time recruiting staffer and one student manager each for offense and defense. Position coaches often set up their own drills during practice.

Up until this month, the staff had to set up and break down 120 folding chairs every day just to hold team meetings.

The program has no real presence in name, image and likeness. (USC, has enough donor support that 65 players’ families are able to travel to road games this season.)

The administration is giving more — the new facility is a sign of that — but more support is needed from those around the community. One problem is the program’s lack of history.”

          Sounds fun

    • Yes, and at only 30 % shares for the first 7 years, then they gradually increase from years 8-10 until finally arriving at full media shares in years 10-12.

30% for 7 years in a conference that could easily be the next to fold.

  63. Anybody know if the Pac conference bylaws allow the voting members to change existing bylaws if they have unanimous consent?
Since OSU/WSU are the 2 remaining voting members, cant they just vote to end allow themselves the ability to absorb the remaining assets without waiting till August 1st 2024?

  64. 13

If we have a good football year but don’t get in to the Big 12, smith will be poached. But don’t worry Beaver nation, I think Mike Riley is available.

  65. Even if none of this realignment had taken place, if the Beavs have the season everyone thinks they’ll have, schools would be coming after JS anyway. I now see HC Trent Bray leading OSU into the Mt. West.

    Couple thoughts:

IF we win the PAC 12 title and make the playoff. big if, I think we still may end up in a power 4 conference.

    Otherwise:
Best option now is a “reverse” merger wit with the MWC that retains the PAC 12 name.
No exit fees for MWC schools
OSU and WSU split the reported $60M NCAA tournament credits and potential the reported $40M emergency fund. That may be needed for the new conference though so I’m not so sure on that, I would expect the MW would bring some money with them as well.
Renegotiate TV rights, it’ll be higher than the current MWC but likely pennies on the dollar compared to what we have now.
Pac 12 network continues and hopefully with new leadership can be profitable and provide exposure.
WIN – WIN – WIN, the program will die if it starts finishing 3rd or 4th in the MWC. Need to be in the conference championship every year and play off every other year. Just need to win the conference and beat out the next best AAC team.

The silver lining here is we likely have an easier path to the playoff than most the other former Pac 12 teams.

OT: I’m going to grow peach trees and pear trees this fall. Does anyone have an Anjou pear tree and know if it needs cross fertilization? I’m seeing mixed things online. We have a dwarf variety and don’t want a ton of size or yield. Just good tasty fruit. I’d rather not plant two if possible.

    • Yes they need a pollinator. I have one tree but my neighbor has several with a pollinator so I got lucky not having to have one. What I don’t know is if they can cross pollinate with other pears. I also have red Bartletts that pollinate with anything that has the same bloom period.

      • Interesting. The internet says that particular species self pollinates, but when you go that route it just produces less fruit (this would be okay so long as it produces some fruit).

Edit: I wonder if I could find another pear tree in the city (I bike around a lot and have found many apple trees…), clip a few flowers, and manually cross pollinate so I don’t have to have two trees?

        • I got the above info from my neighbor as he has about 3/4 of an acre in fruit trees. He told me 6 years ago that I shouldn’t plant nectarines because our area has a bad case of peach curl. I didn’t listen. My first crop was awesome. The next 5 years involved more copper spray then I care to admit. Those trees are coming out this winter because it’s an unwinnable battle.

          • Shit. I wrote CSU to ask them for advice…it might be super specific to the local area for some of this. Thanks, though. All info is helpful.

    • BB is right about a pollinator for pears. Grafting on a different variety is a possibility, but needs to be a diploid (normal set of chromosomes) of course. I always thought Anjou was a triploid (not a good pollinator) because of it’s vigor, but USDA says it’s diploid. Or you could clip some different pear branches in flower and stick them in a vase/pot at the base of your tree when in bloom. If you try to go the self-fertile route, the crop will be smaller, but also the fruit tends to run small if the pollination is poor. Never heard of a dwarf Anjou per se, but it could be on quince rootstock which would keep it smaller, but less hardy.

What hardiness zone? There are only a handful of peaches hardy to -20F. Reliance is one and it has decent fruit, but Contender is supposedly better. Most peaches are self-fertile. Maybe a plum or plum hybrid would be easier though. Leaf curl is a pain.

      • Once the curl was set in I asked the neighbor how to get rid of it. He’s 85 years old. He told me the only thing that ever worked on completely clearing up curl was banned in the early 60s. He said “imagine how toxic it had to be for anyone banning anything in The 60s? Hell they were fogging the streets with DDT and dumping 55 gallon drums of nuclear waste in the ground but peach curl spray was a no go.”

    • It took a while to recall a past life, but Frost peach was curl resistant and pretty easy to grow. Tasty fruit. Looks like it’s hardy to -20F. Guessing you are in an area prone to late spring frosts though, so that might be tricky. There are a handful of curl resistant peaches now, Frost was one of the first.

  68. The civil war first was ruined by trying to change the name, and this year officially ends, remaining nw rival wazzu for new regional game…the Columbia Cup

  69. ” Stanford expects 22 of its 36 sports will see either no scheduling changes or minimal scheduling impacts. The university will be working with the ACC to optimize scheduling, much of which will continue to occur over weekends, as well as on other solutions to mitigate the impact of travel and support the continued academic success of student-athletes. ”

WTF, really? I thought those dweebs in Palo Alto were supposed to be the smart ones

  70. Pac-12 pays a huge amount in rent for their headquarters.

    https://247sports.com/article/pac-12-rent-headquarters-huge-amount-90-million-return-to-footba-151685978/

Article from 3 years ago. Never really understood why Pac 12 Headquartered in SF. The Pac was on the hook for 8.3M per year for11 years. Realty Co. buys building for 90M and a month later rents to Pac 12 for . . . 90M, over 11 years Lease signed 12-2011. Did that get renewed? If they sign agreements like that, the Pac 2 could be under water.

  71. I believe by early next week, there will be a resolution on where the Beavs will be playing football/basketball next year. (hint it’s the mountain west)

Wrestling, Gymnastics, rowing, soccer, softball and volleyball will have to find new conferences as mountain west does not offer them. Big west seems like a fit for most. Baseball should go to big west if others do as well. Wrestling will go big12. Gymnastics probably goes to BIG10 or BIG12.

  72. Into the actual game now,

-16.5 seems about right. Surprised it hasn’t moved much at all.

    Keys to the game
    – Offense, start fast and physically dominate up front. SJSU does not have the D line to keep up the physicality.
    – Stay with what worked last year, ground and pound and then use play action to get things moving.
    – Get DJU into the game with high percentage passes and then open it up in the second half. No designed runs other than QB sneaks.
    – RBs seem like they’ll split the carries. with DM getting around 15-20 carries or lower if he hits the 100 yard mark.
    – Defense – play fast and keep the QB from extending plays. He makes plays when he gets out of the pocket. Stay in the rush lanes and if he runs, make him run horizontal.
    – Special teams – Make a kick! No idea what the punter can do. Just don’t fumble it.

While players don’t have the bitterness that fans have over what’s happening, the coaches sure do. I think Smith will run up the score given the chance. I’ve said this needs to be a statement win on national TV. So everyone sees the team that is being left behind can do.

    Random thoughts –
Wonder how RBs will be incorporated into the passing offense. Adds another target to cover for the defense.
How will the TE’s rotate will all of them on the depth chart
With the QB loving to run, we’ll see how fast this year’s defense team speed is. If they look fast, they’ll have a good year.

    • Interested to see how much of the playbook (both sides of the ball) is kept under wraps in this first week. ie: will we see 2 and 3 TE sets etc.

Temper expectations of a boat race by the notion that JS will pull DJU with plenty of time left for BG/AC…………speaking of which, will AC play at all? I’d save his 4 games for a bit later as insurance if another QB gets sidelined.

Agree 100% with your comment about Defense.

I’d like to see minimal procedural penalties from, especially, the O-line.

    • I don’t think OSU runs up the score vs any of the OOC teams they play. Now on the other hand run it up vs every PAC team except WSU, CAL and Stanford.

      • Nah, furd and cal can eat a bag of shit too. They were literally begging to get away from the nw schools. They would have left with the other teams had anyone else wanted them. They had no interest in trying to rebuild and hampered beavs ability to move on

        • Yup, they deserve to be trampled. They think they ultimately deserve to be in the Big 10 anyway. I hope they get left behind when super conferences happen. Eff Calford!

  73. Anybody want 4 cheap tix to OSU/UCDavis?
I have 4 of those Ticket/HotDog/Soda vouchers which I think get you end zone seats near the video board. $50 for all 4.

Have to go to a funeral next weekend instead and since these are physical vouchers, I dont have a way to sell them on seatgeek/stubhub

    • Actually exactly what some of us expected and have been trying to get across. Deion isn’t for everybody, he’s gonna rub a lot of people the wrong way (especially racists). But he’s a damn good coach and they are gonna win some games while he’s there.

Also TCU didn’t look very good, so there’s that favor too.

      • He’s not all that, as a coach. But people forgot that lots of money can buy great assistants, which is what CU did.
If he was a great coach, he wouldn’t have jumped on the dogpile after game 1. He would have acted like he’s been there before.

  74. So, if the P-2 has until 2025 to add members to meet NCAA requirements, could the Beavs beat Wazzu at home next year thus winning the conference with a 1-0 record and making the playoffs (with all that nice post-season dough for the program)?

  75. 1
    1

PSU will probably get blown out by the Quacks as they are already down 22-7, but they rushed for 100 yards in the first quarter and are moving the ball on the ground to begin the second quarter.

  76. Just wondering what the consensus is about rooting for ex-Pac 12 teams? Do we want them to win all of their games except the Beavs to keep their poll numbers high? Or do we count them as heathen now? Personally I would love to play a 12-0 Trojan team and send them crying to momma, “they all said we were great and belonged in the playoffs, what happened ?”.

  77. 2

Colorado has some serious athletes offensively and Sanders is good. The fact they gave up 42 points to a team who’s QB had major accuracy issues shows their defense is terrible tho. Oregon State might run for 300 yards on them. I think they’ll be decent overall. 7 win ceiling just off the offense but no real threat to elite teams at the top. TCU had a great run last year but they look headed for a major step back.

  78. 3
    2

Colorado with a huge win today. I think they’ll finish middle of the pack now. I think they were able to surprise everyone today because everything was such an unknown. Won’t happen much against the better teams.

    • 1
      2

Colorado might have a shot at a teams like USC/Oregon if they can get them into a shootout of big plays rather than a disciplined strategic game. Utah and OSU should be fine because the approach is different than USC, Oregon and even Washington.

Meanwhile Colorado will maintain national attention and allow OSU to just win and begin the run without much pressure or fanfare. I’ll guess that CU will be top 25 in the next poll. Lol

    • It’s impressive that CU is so much better on offense, but they couldn’t get much worse. What I’m almost as surprised by is everyone thinking TCU was going to be elite again this year. Since when did they become a plug-and-play program? Pretty spotty results since 2018 minus last season and even last year they won a lot of close games. CU will be better, but TCU may end up being very mediocre.

    • Well, they’re going to end up with about the same TV money as the Mean Green due to their shitty ACC deal. Would be nice to see another “P-Traitor” team bite the dust today. UW seems to be starting to pull away from Boise St.

      • Boise and UW both suck at the run, and it doesn’t help Boise when their QB can’t hit quick slants and hitches. Boise QB went through something like 10 or 11 incompletes in a row. And it wasn’t because of the D. He lost the yips on the 2-minute drive, and the UW DBs showed some flaws that we were hearing about out of camp.

  79. USC scored 56 against SJSU
    Stanford 37 against Hawaii
Cal 48 so far against North Texas
    CU 45 vs TCU
    Ducks 81 vs Portland St
    Utah 24 bs Florida
    ASU 24 vs Southern Utah
UW 49 so far vs BSU

PAC12 is averaging 40+ points per game and hasn’t lost yet…
Average score of about 42-20 in the first 8 games… and several haven’t played yet.
Stanford, Cal and Colorado all may be better than expected. ASU may have a qb after all.
There won’t be easy games, but defense and stylistic approaches will be the difference for OSU.

The team that plays any defense will have the best shot to win the conference.

    • You can’t take too much from week one. Pac 12 has always had good offenses. So I agree that if they’re about as good as last year that could be the key to the season. Add DJU and you would think the offense can be really good as well. The run game will be key to keep the ball out of the opponent’s hands.

  80. College football is fickle, but it’s looking like Utah is not going to have much to worry about with Baylor. I thought Dave Aranda was a defensive genius.

    • 1
      1

First time ever Texas State scored 40+ against a P5 team since joining the FBS level and they went 4-8 last year. Baylor will be looking for a new coach soon enough. Big 12 looks very mediocre and especially so with their two biggest programs leaving. Sure would be nice if the Beavers could find a way to join that league.

Funny how this place is starting to turn into PureOrange. Have a slight bit of doubt that the Beavs aren’t going undefeated and you get ridiculed. So many orange colored glasses these days!

    • Just like playing the big lotteries. You buy your ticket and start to imagine all that you will do with the money, including all your charitable giving. You aren’t thinking about the odds. So, I pay my idiot tax which buys me a dream for a couple days. Then reality moves in, and I get one number out of five picks. We are in the dream stage, and hopefully that won’t end. But until they draw the numbers, someone has to win, why not our team?

    • Hey-O another sock puppet comes out of the drawer.

Weird how you’ve never posted here before but come riding in to white knight another fucking loser

    • That’s not even what’s going on.
We got poser dude saying Beavs win 8, max. No reason, just that poser dude thinks bad juju.
And when poser dude is challenged to bring reason to his declarative statements, he cries like a little baby that everyone thinks we’re going undefeated.

      It’s Duck logic.

    2023 Season Predictions:

    @SJSU W 49 – 24
    UC Davis W 59 – 10
    SDSU W 42 – 24
    @ WSU W 35 – 21
    Utah L 52 – 42
    @ Cal W 49 – 31
    UCLA W 47 – 31
    @ Arizona W 31 – 15
    @ Colorado W 48 – 45
    Stanford W 35 – 21
    Washington W 35 – 31
    @ UO L 42 – 35

I see Utah, Colorado, Washington, and UO all as potential losses but these are the 2 we drop imo.

    Go Beavs.

      • I heard a guy on the radio( i think Dave Bartoo of college football matrix?) who was talking about early stats this season and the effects of the rolling clock rule changes in the small sample size. He was saying the Vegas betting lines hadnt been adjusted yet to the change in rules and may take a week or 2 to get acclimated to the new typical football game. He said he was planning to bet the under on every game because early results were proving to show scoring was down already.
Will be curious to see how he did after this weekends games are all finished.

    • 4
      3

Utah won’t score 52 even with everyone healthy and I don’t think Rising will be 100% by then.
I figure the Beavs offense will be pretty efficient, which means fewer possessions for opponents and fewer points overall.

I’ll counter that Beavs should average around 37 ppg and hold opponents to about 24 or so.

I’m still expecting 12-0 and a magical season.

    • No fucking way in hell is SDSU gonna score 24 against OSU unless Bray puts in the scrugs early.

I’ve watched a little of both of their games and their offense is anemic.

      And that’s being generous.

20-13 W over Ohio at home
36-28 W over FCS Idaho St at home

Chip Kelly to ESPN at halftime: “These new rules are crazy. We had four drives in the first half. Hope you guys are selling a lot of commercials.”

I’m glad that Chip Kelly is still a dick.

  85. Big 12 had the worst day yesterday between TCU, Baylor, and TT (who was everyone’s dark horse pick, for some reason). Maybe they’ll reconsider expanding west…

    • Everyone is pontificating about the ACC’s eventual implosion and I get it, but the Big 12 seems the more irrelevant league with a bunch of shitty or overhyped teams. I guess they think Utah will save them next season, but they sure the hell do not replace Texas/Oklahoma. A P-9 should have stayed together, what the fuck were they thinking?

  86. https://www.denverpost.com/2023/09/02/mountain-west-future-pac-12-washington-state-oregon-state/
“WSU and OSU need to buy some time to consider what assets remain for each university within the Pac-12.
CSU athletic director Joe Parker said the confluence of those factors could lead to a “scheduling alliance” for WSU/OSU and the Mountain West in 2024.
“That allows them to bridge and understand their financial situation, try to maximize where they’re at, and then maybe pivot into the Mountain West (in 2025),” Parker said. “There’s also the question of, what’s the stronger (intellectual property)? The value of the branding of the Pac-12, or the Mountain West, or is there something else (new)?”

  87. Excited to see the new team today! On paper, we should dominate both sides of the ball. Would love to see the defense wreak havoc on their QB. Our o line and backfield should have no problems running it down their throats and giving DJ plenty of time to find some targets. It’s a great day to be a beaver and nothing like the excitement of all the possibilities of a new season : )

Happy Game Day, ya filthy animals!!! It has been a wild ride this preseason and I am excited to watch and read about the final season. I hope to meet you all at the Natty!!!

  89. Let’s see how this team handles expectations. They have a mobile qb with a good passing game. It should give a good idea of how the defense will be this year.
