I think the story is that a bunch of guys who could have come back didn’t, to give them an extra two weeks to heal. And Julian is back, which is probably why Kane was a lot more active in run support.
It’s sad but to beat even SJSU we will need to play a flawless game. Can’t turn ball over. Can’t make stupid mistakes and run the ball out of the endzone on the kickoff. Special teams isn’t special and is more of a liability than at any other time in recent memory. We’re just not good enough to make mistakes and win…even against “lesser” opponents.
We will have to get qb pressure otherwise this is likely a loss. SJSU wants to throw the ball and they’ve been pretty decent at it this year and have shown to put up points. Our defense just isn’t good and it’s not entirely due to injuries. If they have all day to throw like Cal did, things could be ugly. Largely, Jordan, Thomas and Ayers have been pretty solid, it’s everyone else beyond that who’s really struggling. #8 got torched a few times and was called for a hold on one play and was still 3 yds behind the receiver. We couldn’t cover the TE last week or anyone 4th 5th safeties needed to cover. Hard to say which SJSU team shows up. They lost to Fresno State 33-10 but then put up 52 on the road vs WSU and nearly won that double OT game. It does appear they’ve moved away from that QB who played vs WSU so not sure if that’s performance or just not totally healthy but he threw for nearly 400 yds and 4 tds that game.
This Beavs team reminds me of my golf game where every week it’s something new that is awful. Starting the season it seemed like we could run the ball on anyone and defense was solid enough but couldn’t stop the run. Then the defense got really bad and we’re allowing 350+ yds on ground. Last game played run pretty well but got carved up in the passing game. Offense is just a shit show. Haven’t been able to run the ball, either scheme or by choice, and we’re resulting to throwing the rock which we clearly can’t do. Gundy is starting to remind me of our last OC where he decides to not be creative and run the same routes over and over again. The 1 bubble screen we did try and run last week was to Walker who’s not the fast twitch guy by any stretch of the imagination. I suppose they don’t feel comfortable doing much else beyond what they’ve shown but it’s frustrating to see the lack of creativity in trying to make plays or generate momentum.

Bleu Dantzler from Chandler, AZ. 3-star OLB/DE, early-enrollee, former Utah St commit with SMU and MWC offers. Good motor, has a number of pass rush moves and is able to beat bigger OL. Biggest concern on film is he tackles high every single time.
I was in agreement with the high tackling, until the final play of his season highlights. Almost every other play was pass rush, where he was playing at shoulder level, keeping his head up, and never giving up his feet.
Need to see some basic run D to figure out if he plays like that against the run, or if it’s more like that last play.
I think he’s an edge, because his top end speed isn’t impressive, but he’s really quick and plays with good leverage in tight spaces.

SJSU 42 Beavs 16. SJSU’s DL is underrated and will get pressure on our QB. Our offense may struggle again unless we 100% commit to running the ball. I’d start McCoy and run 80% of the time with lots of QB options, designed QB runs, play action deep passes, etc. Our D won’t be able to get off the field again so time of possession and winning TO battle is critical. This is a bad positional matchup for Beavs and SJSU is much better than they get credit for. Play with chip on shoulder plus MWC refs will make a couple gut wrenching call against us… have in every game so far. I predict a beat down but if Beavs have the right game plan and some luck, they could keep this close and potentially win with it being at Reser.
One-time ab favorite Mike Bloomgren has been fired at Rice after a few decent years, but a mostly uninspiring tenure.

We don’t have a QB who can do anything but run.
Air Force is terrible, their only win is by 2 scores to a 4-4 FCS Merrimack. Yes, the academy schools are experts at making games low scoring rock fights, but if we can’t even beat them, we have bigger issues.
CAL is a talented team, best team they’ve played since the yucks, not really comparable to SJSU (kinda decent) and Air Force (not so much).
Bray and co. are going to earn their $ keeping this team together psychologically. Massacre of injuries aside, this is a roster that was sold on making a 12-team CFP run to stick it to the man and many probably thought they’d end up in the B12. Players have to be embarrassed by the last few weeks and checking out mentally with an eye on the Portal/NIL/options for next season is just as much of a challenge as the rest of the schedule is.
McCoy is wholly capable of beating SJSU/AF, he’s also wholly capable of killing any chance at winning (the duality of football?). Ben gives the most stable path to winning the next two IMO, but tough call, could also see them throwing Gabarri out there if they think he can win while also developing(fucking up). Who knows.
But we’re gonna learn a lot about this staff and team by how they show up next weekend. Godspeed Beavs.
I don’t think the Beavs can beat SJSU with Ben at QB. I do agree that coaching staff and game plan plan are critical if the Beavs were to come out on top. To me, for the Beavs to win, they must be able to apply the same formula that worked at beginning of the year. Run ball, protect the ball, and control time of possession. If they have to rely on pass, I don’t think this team can beat anyone including AF
I agree that they need to re-focus on dominating the running game, but do you mean that Ben can’t do that because he himself is not the same threat to run? To me, the return of the run game is the argument for leaning on captain Ben in these troubling times (or rolling the dice with Gabarri).
Teams are loading the box with little worry even on 3rd down because they don’t respect Beavs QB play (or pass blocking). There’s no harm in leaving a guy uncovered or wide-open in a 1-on-1 if the QB isn’t even conscious of their existence because he can’t process the game and work through a progression. It’s been Cover-1 galore.
McCoy has made some outstanding plays with his legs and dropped some dimes, but how many times (especially on 3rd and short) has he completely stopped playing QB, locked onto one guy, and missed an easy first down (or touchdown)? For those of you that haven’t been to a game in-person this season and only have the TV camera angle, it’s been A LOT of times. It’s been demoralizing for the fans and the players on the sideline.
BG is overrated by some, but does he miss wide-open Hankerson standing in the endzone by himself at the end against UNLV? I’m not sure he does, but I’ve seen enough of McCoy to know that he most likely will every time. Opposing coaches see it too. It’s a bad situation.
Love McCoy as a person/competitor but he just screams liability on film, coaches know exactly how to leverage his warts as an advantage and they’ll keep doing it until he figures it out and punishes the strategy, and he has yet to show he can do it. He could come back and have a great game against SJSU/AF, but I think WSU/BSU would likely have an easy time with him and a similar result.
You make some great points. I’ve seen moments this year where McCoy has executed. The drive to tie the game be CSU sticks in my head. He made some great reads and throws in that drive. But that’s more of an outlier especially as the season has progressed which I think is part of your point… opposing coaches have adjusted to him. That said, I don’t think BG is much better and McCoy’s ability to run is a bigger asset than BGs arm. Teams are going to stack the box regardless. If we can’t find a way to run the ball, protect ball, and control clock, we will get steamrolled. McCoy running more option, designed qb runs, fly sweep, rb counter and stretch plays, wildcat with McCoy or Hankerson, together with play action deep passes. Commit to run, be creative to do so, take some occasional play action shots. And then do some unconventional defensive sets to see if we can create some turnovers… blitz like crazy from all angles, play 3 safety’s, etc. Finally, break out your best trick plays and fake FG. Our hopes of a bowl game hinges on beating SJSU
BG has the ability to read coverages and analyze them over the course of a game. He would have understood the D was anticipating his 1-3 reads, looked them off with his 1, then just make his 4 read–the circle route to Hank–his 2.
Allah needs to understand the mesh. Ben clearly read a keeper on that fumble.
Don’t really buy that the players have a foot out the door with an eye on the transfer portal and NIL money because the majority of the players have a horrible resume. The majority has not played well enough to earn interest from a P4 conference.
Doesn’t matter unfortunately, coaches care about the minutia they see on film and a lot of transfers are on NIL this season based solely on their practice footage from former schools because they were injured or buried on the depth chart. Beavs will def lose players, some that we are hoping to be brand names. It’ll be painful. Coaches have to do everything they can to keep as many as possible while also being prepared for the exodus. It’s a tough job.
Hankerson, Gordon, Chisom, Saez, Foster, Skyler, Jordan, Clemons, Ayers, Allah etc. have all shown their value, then there’s the injured and redshirt guys. Unfortunately, they’re gonna lose some of those guys.
Hankerson is the only one that I think has consistently performed well and I thought was a senior.??? If other schools D1/P4 schools want to poach our players we might as well drop down to Division 2 because we’ll never be able to keep anybody. If you want to transfer to a better program or for some bucks, then show it by continuously making plays.
Melvin Jordan or Andre Jordan could catch the eye of other programs. Melvin is pretty undersized (5’11), so that will be a concern for some potential suitors.
I’m guessing both will be getting improved NIL pitches from OSU.
Bray use to tease our last inside backer that I think is the same height as Jordan, if he was 3-4” taller he would have been playing at USC. USC poached him at the end of last year. ;o(
His statement was about his overall size, and it was in the context of whenever USC offers him, they will get him, but they didn’t out of HS.
I think he was trying to put a chip on M–A’s shoulder more than anything. In the end, a fan went to his dream school… and got paid to do it. Can’t blame him.
It just sucks that this is the current state of college football, that you have to continuously recruit the players who previously committed and are currently playing for you.

I believe Wiepert was Gutridge’s most productive target last year. It appears he can catch lots of things.
A few more notes on him: one of the national JC leaders in WHIP (1.04). Fairly low K count compared to other JC pitchers in his echelon. He should have 4 to play 5, as he was a freshman this past season. Originally from Colorado.

You cannot crown a champion of an 18 team conference with 9 conference games, no divisions, and only 1 playoff game.
Anyone that thought this wouldn’t eventually lead to something like this happening has never watched sports. It happening year 1 would be great.
They don’t mind because they are gaming the system to create at least 4-5 teams able to end the season with 0 or 1 loss, thereby demanding an additional playoff spot for all playoff worthy teams from their conference.
It is more of a narrative to land as many playoff spots rather than desiring to name a true conference champ. The only
Point to the conference championship games is simply tv ratings and tv rights sold for additional dollars. They will insist both teams should be in the playoffs no matter the outcome. SEC will mirror the same arguments and these 2 conferences will demand 10 spots when it is all said and done.
It will be up to the other conferences to push back and not allow them to succeed in their demands.
I’d love to see Indiana, Pitt, Iowa St, Texas A&M all wins conferences and BYU, Boise St, Wazzu, ND all get in as 1 loss. That leaves 4 spots – Oregon, Tenn, Miami, Georgia

I don’t think other conferences will matter, I think TV ratings will tumble a few years into this new format once fans realize it is just a bunch of SEC/B1G rematches. Non-alum fans that want that already have the NFL.
I hope it happens in the SEC first, maybe THEN they’d add a ninth conference game. Seriously, that conference needs to get dinged by the committee for that. Some teams actually seem to schedule at least one decent P4 team in non-conference – the rest try to skate through. Steal a conference win and a close loss to justify a playoff spot? I’ll pass.
A 16/18 team conference shouldn’t be playing any non-conference games. Non-conference games exist to fill out a schedule after you’ve already played a round robin. If you can’t play a round robin within your conference, you shouldn’t be allowed to play non conference games.
That’s definitely not how it works. Why would they choose the margin of victory against one team to determine who makes the CCG?
The rules are pretty simple – from the B1G website:
(1) Tied teams compared based on head-to-head matchups during the regular season (doesn’t apply – all undefeated – go to #2)
(2) Tied teams will be compared based on record against all common conference opponents (doesn’t apply – all undefeated – go to #3)
(3) Tied teams will be compared based on record against common opponents with the best conference record and proceeding through the common conference opponents based on their order of finish within the conference standings (doesn’t apply – all undefeated – go to #4)
(4) Tied teams will be compared based on the best cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents.
#4 is where it ends, and Indiana likely gets hosed because they have a remarkably easy B1G schedule (avoiding obviously UO and PSU, but also avoiding the upper middle class of the B1G – no Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, or Minnesota). Of the 8 other teams with winning B1G records, Indiana manages to avoid 6 of them (only playing Ohio St and Michigan)
It would then be funny if a ticked off Hoosiers team whacked everyone in the CFP, because who has ever heard of Indiana not playing at least some of those teams in one season?

One of the things that really didn’t get enough attention during the break up of the Pac-12, and the blame tossing toward the commissioners and college presidents was the fact that Pac-12 viewership just ISN’T as high as the other conferences. College football just doesn’t matter as much out here because three-quarters of the conference had at least one NFL team in the market, in addition to other pro sports teams. Something other conferences like the Big 10 and SEC don’t contend with. The TV money wasn’t charity. And even with all the screw-ups by those tasked with protecting the conference, if the interest was there, even that clown car couldn’t have screwed up the conference getting a decent media deal.
So before we can get a decent media deal we have show strong TV viewership, during the time we don’t have a media deal. That seems a bit of a challenge.
Dan, interesting comments. Specifically the California schools never seemed to draw big crowds with the exception of USC when they were really good and it was the “cool” thing to be seen at games. LA market teams never seem to draw that well (see LA Rams & Raiders). Not sure how the Arizona school crowds were at football games. I hear people blame the nice weather. But football in the SEC is a religion and has always been. As the Big 10, the “blue blood” schools have always had great crowds. I don’t think the also rans drew great crowds consistently.
It doesn’t seem to be the “draw” necessarily. Its more about the potential viewership in the market. Big markets have the potential to draw big numbers, whether they do or not seems to be the question that no one really cares about. Outside of the cal game we’ve drawn better viewership then then many middling big12/big10 and some sec schools. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of which TV markets are watching those games since it’s on nationally.
OSU is the Portland market. Same as UO. They’re is zero difference between the schools “markets”
I can’t explain TVs logic here but it’s not markets. All colleges own the biggest markets in their states. If it was about markets, or market potential, the SEC wouldn’t be the dominant conference. 2 Mississippi schools? Nope. Alabama with 2 schools? What market? It’s not TV markets driving this.

Morris, a 6-foot-1 left-hander from Fresno, California, announced Monday that he was committing to Oregon State, posting on Twitter: “Corvallis is home, go Beavs.” He had been committed to Texas.

Morris plays for Washington Union HS in the tiny town of Easton just outside of Fresno. I don’t know what they put in the water out there, but they have always had great athletes. Former MLB pitcher Matt Garza (2008 ALCS MVP) and the NBA’s Deshawn Stephenson both came from Washington Union.

It would be luck o the Beavers that Jeanty breaks the record in a win against them and in a game where the beavers may need a victory just to be bowl eligible…Beavers need to wrap up his legs, not sure a 180 lb safety like Kane will be game for that, we’ll see.
But Jeanty has put up good numbers against better defenses….
Easiest LODB call of all time.
1) Beavs of course will enter needing a win to get to a bowl game,
2)Jeanty will be in a deadlock for the Heisman and will need a monster game to separate,
3) Beavs d-line and lbs will be anxious to tackle but not disciplined to do it.
4) Boise St will also need to run up to score for style points going into the possible playoff spot, in spite of the conference championship.
That game will be a disaster to watch as a Beav fan, All issues point to an ultra focused BSU team building to one of their best years in school history, and a true Heisman winner. The crazy thing about Jeanty is if you stack 8-9 to stop him, he only needs to break contact with 1 or 2 guys, (which he does easily about 70% of the time) and then he can break a 60 yard td run. He has numerous 40+ td runs and is so explosive for a big play, Beavs will be struggling to slow him down.
I expect Jeanty will probably run for 250-280 yards and at least 5 tds against the Beavs.
AND the Ducks secure the #1 playoff seed. Ha!
Game has a 1:00 eastern time start…pretty good for BSU, but I wonder if the network will move game time back to better showcase Jeanty if the Heisman race is indeed tight.

Yeah it’s kind of hard to explain but I get the feeling that not just with football, but really with all sports, people generally have alot less personal investment in the outcomes of games. Sports are becoming more of a form of “cultural participation” rather than something deeply meaningful. The W’s and the L’s don’t matter as much as the performance in general. Did you express your individual charisma in a meaningful way? If so, that’s the fastest way to prominence. When I observe young people at sporting events now it really just seems like a big social event more than anything else. The game itself is secondary.
Sports are always social events for young people, doesn’t mean they don’t care.
Those social events create the memories that connect them to those teams for life. You can’t judge the future of sports by the actions of those under 30, the money that drives sports comes from those over 40 whom have an emotional connection because of the social connections sports gave them when they were young.
The games were always social events yet but the game itself was still THE main event. I just don’t get that vibe today. Doesn’t mean that there aren’t still some young people that are emotionally all in though. But the trend is the trend and it has a snowball effect culturally.

Mark Ingram over Toby Gerhart was possibly one of the most egregious Heisman choices ever. I’d put that one up there with Gino Torretta over Marshall Faulk.
I don’t think so Jack. Henry “only” had around 2,300 yds, with 2,200 coming from rushing. McCaffrey had over 2,600 yards rushing and receiving; plus over 1,000 on kick off returns and another 190 on punt returns. Henry did have a lot of TD’s (28). I think what put him over the top was he broke Herschel Walkers record and played for a National title contender. I still think the do it all McCaffrey should have won.

Pretty surprising move given they had such a hard time picking a starter in preseason before McCoy’s “sudden emergence” in the last week. Stock up with international players, then pay big bucks for 1-2 American players to fill key gaps next year. Assuming they aren’t paying much for current roster so maybe they can save up, win some games this year, and attract some free agents next. While I give Tinks credit for fielding what might be a team that isn’t absolute dog shit like most years, I have zero faith in his ability to teach, develop, lead, and execute as a game coach. So unless we catch lightning in a bottle, there’s almost zero chance of a Tinks coached team reaching its potential. Good to see Beavs win tonight vs a crap Utah Tech team, but tbh, probably won’t finish in top half of wcc. Need to win to keep best players and attract good additions next year to avoid another rebuild. Does Tinks have it in him? I don’t think so.

You guys are all gluttons for punishment if you willingly watch a Tinkle coached team. I can tell you exactly how this will go based on past seasons:
Games 1-5 Beavs look disjointed and barely capable to compete with NAIA level schools but get a few nice wins. This is always Tinkle’s high-point.
Games 6-10 are the rise of the core group, usually made up of guys who can’t shoot, and don’t know how to run an offensive set, these are the games where the new players who are talented tend to play above Tinkle’s coaching ability, which gets them in the doghouse for the rest of the year.
Games 11-20 are where the mantra of character and team building come into play, due to extended disappointing showings as the team loses all fundamentals and degrades into rat ball and individualism, Tinkle will generally bench his most talented players out of frustration since they are smart enough to depart from his process and actually want to win some games.
Games 20-30 are easily the most frustrating each year as the hope of almost making postseason anything fades and the roster begins looking for the exit via other school offers, effort diminishes and Tinkle shouts constantly but no one hears him any longer. He has lost another locker-room and begins the narrative about rebuilding the culture with guys who want to be there.
Expect 12-18 record, with 10 wins coming early and you’ll be pleasantly surprised if they do any better than that, but don’t waste time thinking Tinkle has turned a corner or figured anything out. He falls under the blind squirrel finds a nut category.
I watch Oregon State basketball. Regardless of who is coaching. Do I wish we had a different coach. Yes. But nothing I can do. So I will watch whatever team is out there with whatever coach is sitting on the bench.
But the drama is always about whether he’ll find the nut!
This is a pretty accurate summation, although double digit wins in a season feels like a national championship for a WT team. It’s hard to watch a team he coaches with the 4 corners offense he likes to run, but men’s basketball is what I grew up watching since we had season tickets throughout my childhood. The bill allowed asylum seekers to stay in the US until their immigration statues was changed to citizen as opposed to staying in Mexico or another country until that status was changed which is what the Republicans wanted. It was was going to be codified as a result so it would take a monumental challenge to change it later to better fit the future of immigration. The original plan was underfunded and would take an asylum seeker 10 to 15 years to get through the complete process because the immigration courts would be flooded. Another point: there’s literally nothing the Trump administration can do to reduce nondiscretionary spending (Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, interest), which is fixed by law. That law can only be repealed and replaced by Congress.
Nondiscretionary spending + military exceed tax revenues ($5 trillion) and must be prioritized. So, all these “battles” over discretionary spending will be effectively meaningless.

Harris lost because she was the worst candidate in the history of any presidential election I’ve been alive for. She was unable to connect and resonate with people. I voted for her but only because Trump is worse and I’m concerned with having 1-2 more Trump appointments on Supreme Court. My wife voted for Trump because she disagreed with Harris on 1 key issue that was important to her and she didn’t know where Harris stood on other key issues. My wife absolutely despises Trump and it’s hard for me to believe she actually voted for him but that says more about Harris than anything. Trump isn’t a good choice but Harris was so bad that a large percentage of Americans just didn’t vote because they couldn’t get themselves to pick between 2 dog shit candidates. And then there was a smaller percentage of people like my wife that flipped to Trump because of a few key issues or because they couldn’t figure out what the fuck Harris was trying to say. That said, buckle up because for the first time in a long time, the POTUS will have both Senate and House majority to execute agenda. Getting Collins and Robinson back. Might help a bit but that D Line is really bad. Avg 1 tackle for loss a game and I think we’ve only gotten 1 sack on the year? Give a QB 8 sec to throw the ball is a recipe for disaster. Not sure these 2 guys coming back change a whole lot vs the 7th ranked passing team in the nation. We could see a ton of yds through the air and I don’t see us keeping up in a shootout. Hell, we don’t even know who our QB is and whoever does start is likely going to have a short leash. Not a great matchup for the Beavs.

UNT is pretty good in hoops. The Super Pit isn’t a fun road game for most opponents.

I would think it’s more because of being in a second year of limbo. Until we get the Pac up and running again, this is what we’re paying that the other schools joining us won’t.
After stability comes a time to rebuild. But I hope we work to build better, not faster.
From what I’ve been reading, most athletic departments are looking at cutting programs. Maybe that’s their alternative way of cutting the budget. Cut loose certain programs and redirect even more assets towards the money making programs.
Sucks that my kids arent going to have a shot at a sweet rowing or golf scholarship to cover their school costs.
Had an interesting conversation with my son’s head coach a couple weeks ago. Smaller college basketball program but they give athletic scholarships. My son is getting 50% basketball plus 25% academics scholarship. Coach is also the AD. He said he’s already seeing a higher level of athlete drop down to smaller colleges because the larger colleges are beginning to cut certain sports and pull scholarships.
This is the way. Inevitable trickle down of talent and the kids who would normally have a chance at a D3 or NAIA school will get bumped out of the opportunity. Big schools will of course kill many sports in the effort to stay afloat rather than lose cash-flow overall. It makes you wonder if some schools are considering dropping out of D1, in order to maintain sports programs and avoid the settlement repercussions.
My son is visiting Linfield for football soon, so I will see what the D3 world is about. As I understand, D3 is all academic scholarships and NAIA can offer scholarships for sports.

Some of that is probably because we don’t have someone giving us all the info u used to. I know you’re pretty over it but you always had the down low on possible commits and visits etc.
Mostly because we now know if he is decent, he will be gone within 2 years anyway. Sign him, play him and recruit for his replacement on a year to year basis rather than a 4 year basis. Kind of ruins the bond of fan to player/team.

The reason some kids don’t play then end up at a JUCO is the same reason the whole “academic standard” discussion came about. The recruiting standards were ostensibly observed by schools with higher entrance standards.
There were a lot of schools back in the day who were proud to never take JUCO xfers.
But those kids skated academically in HS, and they had to reckon with just basic college standards, where they would be penalized for not doing well. CCs do a great job teaching people how to learn, because they don’t bother with anything but applied sciences. That’s relatable to us normal people.

For me it will be the back to back games vs Oregon and at North Texas(OSU’s first road game). Those will be OSU’s 2 biggest OOC tests until they play in the Tournament in Hawaii around Christmas.
North Texas has won 20+ games 5 of last 7 seasons(other 2 seasons they won 18 and 19). Made NCAA Tournament in 2021. They won 31 games and won the NIT in 2023. Should be good road test.

Give it time. The longer they are with Tinkle, their offensive awareness and natural skills begin to erode.
I’ll predict that Jacks key 2 game litmus test will both be losses and the tinkering with the lineup will begin shortly after that.
Any early success is due to guys still maintaining their own skill sets, the predictable unraveling of those skills sets in around mid December. And Tinkles response is always to shuffle starters and yell with his arms up.

We’ve been able to dominate in the paint the first 2 games. That’s been great, but we’ll see how that looks when we start matching with schools that have some size as well. Fallah seems to be legit, but has had a size advantage so far. If we could have consistent perimeter shooting, we do seem to have the pieces to be more competitive. It’s been great to see the big win margins though. Last few seasons these would’ve been losses or wins in double OT.

UNLV is a good team with a great coaching staff that’s been building for years. Nevada has a good coach in Choate and they play their ass off for him even though they don’t have much talent. SJSU has an outstanding coach and they didn’t look talent deficient to the Beavs at all, they should beat Stanford and they’ll give BSU/UNLV great games.
We need the reality check. Beavs got gutted and aren’t comparable in talent to the 22′-23′ squads, but they’ve haven’t been coached well all season, and it hasn’t improved as the season has gone on. The obvious shortfall is coaching and it needs to be addressed by a young head coach surrounded by personal friends. Tough decisions.

No, saying he has a tough job in deciding what changes need to be made heading into 2025, both with himself and with the staff. I don’t think you fire Bray unless he bottoms out with some 2-10 like seasons in years 3 or 4. I’m all about giving him time to build, especially given his own inexperience.
It’s not all bad, they at least have a known path forward with the conference and that picture could get a lot better depending on the media deal and the final additions, and they’ve got some good young players to build on (if they can keep enough of them). The recruits coming in aren’t expecting to play in the “old Pac-12” at all so that helps with player psyche/identity.
The team hasn’t looked prepared and ready to compete and play football for most of the season. It hasn’t looked or felt this bad as it has the last few weeks since the GA years.
The roster was BAD in 2018-2019 and similarly talented to this years team after all of the injuries, especially on the Defensive front, but those teams played their asses off for Judas and you could feel them improving and building an identity on Offense week to week, even in all the losses. That’s why the few in-game coaching blunders were so painful.
We aren’t seeing that with this staff/team and that’s what has me most concerned, more so than the injuries and talent deficiencies.

Ever pulling Mccoy is totally wild. Losing his running ability cuz of one bad game @Cal we were never winning anyway is insane. Look at the schedule, he has played fine/well/overachieved. We have no receivers to even use any upside Ben G may have with his arm. Taking away running QB threat is a HORRIBLE decision. Totally crazy.
Not sure McCoy is 100% healthy. They haven’t really called any designed runs for him since that 3 td game, or at least nowhere near to the extent they did for those few games early on.
I think teams learned that McCoy is way more dangerous at running and not that good at throwing. Plus that our run game was dominant. So now teams are loading the box and know that they don’t have to worry about deep throws. Ben showed that he is a much more better passer as he was going through reads and passed the ball past 10 yards. He made a terrible play on the pick 6 but it was because he misread the defense thinking the receiver was going to run an out and instead he sat in a hole in the zone. He started the first half 10-14 and two of those was instant pressure causing throw away another was a drop. My worry with Ben is the Oline hasn’t shown the ability to pass block well and have been inconsistent in run blocking. Too many stuffed at or behind the line of scrimmage that puts us behind the sticks. McCoy is more likely to avoid the pressure but hasn’t shown to be a playmaker on broken plays outside of running it. I think we’re missing coach M more than anything. He would probably be good for a couple of wins. The Oline hasn’t played well since their last win.
Agree. Its great when you can pound the rock all game – until like you said teams load the box realizing you have no downfield passing game. You have to have balance. I agree also the O line has not played well either. I think its past time to put in Johnson at QB to see what he can do.

Both RBs played great, fumble was big though. Playing BG over McCoy was huge mistake especially in red zone. BG played ok at first but as SJSU adjusted, he was exposed. He’s not capable of leading a team with his arm… below average game manager at best. Our Defense played pretty good. DBs had too many breakdowns which was the difference but also showed a lot of promise. This group could be good next year if they stick around. Coaches are doing fine all things considered. Need another year of continuity plus more talent before you can get too creative.

I think our top 4-6 guys in the secondary could be pretty solid next year. The problem we have now is that they’re expected to cover guys for 9 or 10 seconds since we can’t generate a pass rush. The second problem we have is that we have too many scout team guys playing or starting due to injury. Ivy, Kane, the Cal xfer guy, etc are not starting caliber players at even the G5 level.
Bray was asked why few to any blitzes and said their QB gets the ball out too quick. Not buying that. They threw ALOT of deep balls. Protecting his coaches and or players. Disappointing part is not showing any improvement. This falls heavily on the coaches.

Thoughts:
Pathetic display. Team needs to be running steps. At least it’ll help them get prepared for playing at 6,600 ft elevation against Air Force next week. At this point, not sure we can even be confident with a win there. Nevada loss still looms, and it now, barring any crazy upsets of BSU or WSU, it looks like this will be yet another losing football season in a long history of many for OSU football. Can we try and put pressure on Bray to donate at least half of his unjustified 2 million dollar a year salary towards our NIL fund until we are consistently at 7-8 wins a year with him? Or maybe allow us to hire 10 more professors or something with it? I think he’ll be able to get by just fine on only $800,000 or so.
Fumble on the opening drive, pick six, and not being able to score when getting a 1st and goal situation were killers. All of those situations should be avoidable. I miss the 21-23 seasons where I actually hade 90+% confidence we’d score if we got past the opponents 40. I believe we had almost perfect red zone scoring percentage from 22-23? Regardless of it all, this was yet another winnable game.
It was nice when we felt almost unbeatable at Reser for three seasons. Despite it being labeled a sellout on the OSU ticket site and on social media, great November weather, and despite the fact it was dad’s weekend, the stadium looked to be about 60% full tops. The most energy there was the entire game was when they kept showing a young kid in the crowd breakdancing on the jumbotron. Again, if we can’t even fill our tiny stadium for the 7 home games we have a year, that’s a problem. But, in the end, you can’t really blame people. If you’re not already paying for a ticket with your student fees and living in the area, it’s quite a drag to go to games. If you don’t live in the Corvallis area, to go to a game, between tickets, fees, food, drink, and gas, you’re probably looking at least $350 to go to a game for a family. And that’s if you want to make the long trek through a bunch of traffic and not shell out hundreds more for a hotel. And all that… for what exactly? To have incessant ad and review stoppages, a lacking stadium atmosphere, and your team losing to middling Mountain West teams week in week out? This is a return to mean. We had a few nice years with Smith, but the unfortunate reality is that THIS IS Oregon State football historically speaking. The Beavers still hold the NCAA Div. I record for the most consecutive losing seasons at 28 straight years, 1970-98.
I think I’ll have to take a step back from OSU football after this season. I grew up in an OSU family and the insane part of all of this is that we’re still in one of the better eras of OSU football, but there’s only so much you can take of getting kicked in the behind by coaches, conferences, and other teams. Since the early 2000’s it’s been like we’ve constantly been climbing the Dune at Cape Kiwanda but we never get to the top. You take a few steps forward, and then you slide back to almost where you started. It’s exhausting. And now? With essentially unrestricted NIL and transfer portal? It doesn’t look like it will get better. The best we can ever hope for is an 7-8 win season most years. I’ll probably have Jack in here with his “toxic optimism” calling me a fake fan or a troll as per usual, but those are just my thoughts as someone who grew up around OSU, and has attended OSU.

I think what’s partially concerning is that were still this bad even with the xfer portal and bringing guys in with some prior experience. At least with the Snakes’ first or 2nd season it was still mainly the 2&3 star talent guys on the squad.
In fairness, the portal guys we got were 2 and 3 stars, not 4 or 5 stars
Huge credit to Bray and company for being able to land all the guys that they could. During the recruiting/signing window everything was a mess. Coach left, conference left, 80% of starters gone, and at that time, no PAC 12 money… It’s like a real estate agent trying to sell a house to someone while it is on fire.
2025 will tell the story of what this staff can do in recruiting. Coach is set, conference is back, and finances are at least stable.
I think Indiana might be setting the template for rebuilds. Hire a G5 coach with a talented roster, and have him bring all of that talent with him to the new school.
Sadly, we are a G5 school now and finances aren’t stable as we have no media plan solidified. But yes, Bray & Co deserve some time to get a roster and make adjustments to whatever the hell they’re doing to have 20+ guys all injured at the same time for significant periods of time at that.
I’ll say it again, The best outcome for OSU at this point un the season is for Boise and WSU to win out, because of future revenue implications for the Pac12 conference. Unfortunately, we play both of them. I guess in a sense that is good because they both should have no problem handling OSU. But on the other hand, it would be on brand for OSU to ruin their best chance at financial success.
Boise is looking beatable, after squeaking by Nevada yesterday. WSU is playing their best ball of the season.
Hope the Beavs take down Air Force and then use the last 2 games to get Gabari Johnson some playing time.

The season was a loss already. This just makes holiday hoops tournaments available to fans who would have gone to some bowl.
I think the devolution screed way above about players losing fundamentals under Tinks is incorrect. Those he had who had fundamentals retained them. Those who were not sound simply never developed to a level they should be primary players on this level.
I would also question his team building. It always seems to take until the Super Bowl for his teams to look like teams.
So I hope having a group of Euros basically looks like having a bunch of coaches’ kids on the floor. They have always seemed to me to be a fundamentals first style of hoops. If he doesn’t need to develop skills at previous levels, and they already understand team concepts, half his issues disappear.
Still need to put players in the right spot to utilize their skills.
The offense looks better already. There are guys actually moving and cutting to the hoop instead of standing around passing it until the shot clock winds down.

It’s night and day. European players are way more fundamental nowadays. It was a smart move and it already seems to be paying off. They actually look like a team 2 games in.

Consider them all gone and you may be pleasantly surprised if 2 of them stay.
That’s probably the best way to approach this. Of course any players that showed promise will have more money and better teams coming to them. It’s a rebuild, having a shitty season getting our asses kicked by “lesser” competition and we’ve been relegated to G5 status.
