I’m sticking with my 38-27 prediction, even with Ward and Robinson starting. I should probably add 3 for Robinson and subtract 10 for Ward (i.e. 41-17), but eh…I feel like they’re both symbolic starts who will be replaced by the second series.

Plus, it’s October, Riley wakes from his slumber. If it were September 30th I’d predict the blowout. Beavs are a weird team, too, in that when you completely expect them to fail and the “fire Riley!” chants to ensue they come up with a win to stave off that negative momentum.

All of this makes me want to get crazy and predict a win, but then I realize the Sun Devils are just flat out better, so I’ll take the safe route and call for a closer than expected loss.

Mannion needs more than 2 seconds if u want to see him throw the deep ball. Lots of pressure and at least he’s getting rid of the ball rather than taking the sack.

I actually like the playcalling thus far.

I understand the redzone issues are due to having no run game. I also think that the short pass to Wheaton earlier in the game was just a check down (there were deeper WRs) where they hoped the LB would miss.

–Not a Langsdork apologist, but gotta call it like it is and good is good.

It’s hard to crap on this performance. They’re playing well despite the scoreboard reads.

The one thing that has me nervous is Mannion…dude appears to be an INT machine. He should have somewhere between 6-8 INTs so far this season, but Wisconsin, UCLA, and ASU dropped some easy ones.

When he’s not throwing easy INTs, he looks very promising.

You simply can’t expect to throw the ball 55 times with 12 running plays and expect that the other team isn’t going to start triple covering literally everyone. If we had a running game, Mannion would be just fine.

And BTW, Katz would be doing the same shit out there right now, so we might as well go with the guy who gets rid of the ball in a timely manner. Katz would have been sacked approx. 15 times.

It will be interesting to hear the strategy. The few runs they tried gained positive yards. Even the fly sweep was open for once. I’m sorry, but you don’t go on the road against a top 25 team and ask a freshmen to win the game with his arm. The season feels very desperate and odd.

Towards the end, Mannion seemed to be getting gun-shy, and throwing balls up for grabs, but that’s understandable. Glad Mannion was wearing a flak vest, and that he survived all those hits without getting seriously injured.

We’re going to see Katz again. Mannion will not last the season if this continues, anything deeper than 8 yard patterns and he was getting drilled. It was irresponsible of the coaching staff to have a freshmen throw 66 times. What the hell is wrong with Riley and Langdork?

Some things I have learned from ASU vs Beavs

Beavs look better on D…but Banker still can’t make in game adjustments. Swing pass left, 15yds, swing pass right, 18yrds, rinse, repeat. I would say this is a result if youth and inexperience but I can remember Banker ever making ingame adjustments.

Secondary is improved and is looking for the ball; result=INTs

Mannion is the future but can’t do it all. Began forcing things in 4th, ’cause what else you gonna do? If ASU were to add water, Mannion would grow like a flower ’cause he was in the ground all night long. Thanks OL.

Remmers continues to be a piece of shit drive killer. If we’re going young then find someone, ANYONE to replace him ( I think the freakin’ ball boy is available…hell suit up a cheerleader). I swear I’m ready to bitch slap him to death. He alone had at least 6 offensive penalties. Bench him. 3 senior starters on OL and they suck dirty pond water. Recruit better!!!!!

No running game…don’t blame the backs…OL is responsible.

ASU is NOT a good team. Osweiler is overrated, their OL should be better but it’s not. Oregon will eat them alive. They’ll look good because their road in the Pac is ridiculously easy…only good team left is Oregon and that will be ugly.

They “adjusted” by playing doctor on the wider side of the field. If you’ll notice, the D was adjusted, OSU typically doesn’t switch what side the OLB’s play. Tonight they tried something new, the athletic Doctor was supposed to be able to make a few tackles. Instead, he missed over and over again. On top of his poor tackling he added at least 2 personal fouls. And of course, Angry and jack beav take no notice

I will say Doctor did not play well. He missed a lot of tackles. One they had a shot at maybe a 2 or 3 yard loss and he got shook badly. He needs to be better. Cameron Collins also missed some tackles. They need to be much better next week. Remmers and Michael Doctor committed some big penalties. That can’t happen.

If you look at my preseason write up, I state that Doctor is fast sideline to sideline, but he is not a sure tackler. That being said, I’d rather have a guy who gets to the spot and misses than a guy who doesn’t get to the spot at all.

Offensively, I think Langsdorf did a poor job. He needs to longer be able to call the game! Mannion was getting killed in the backfield. Remmers was horrible. Mannion did a fairly good job, his pocket presence was quite impressive. His decision making was not, hopefully that is a youth thing.

Mannion, although I think he will be one of OS’s great QB’s, had a horrible night and was lucky the ASU secondary can’t catch a ball thrown directly at them to save their soul.

Mannion looked beat up and worn down by the 4th Quarter — too much pressure, too many hits, no running game to share the offensive load. The dumb penalties also take their toll on a QB, who keeps seeing good plays get called back, and keeps being put in long-yardage situations.

Mannion looked wobbly towards the end. But he showed a lot of grit and toughness by hanging in there. Mannion is going to be really good when OSU can come up with a running game and an O-line to help him.

“We had our shots, but rarely did (quarterback Sean Mannion) have time to have a second look,” Riley said of the struggles of the offensive line. “That’s the hardest part of the offense. He didn’t have a chance to look for the second guy.”

I really continue to question if Cav isn’t overrated as a coach. He is primarily responsible for improving these guys, and Remmers looks worse, not better than two years ago. The reshuffling of the offensive line looks like an exercise in arbitrary decision making. Cav’s placement of the kids on this line make no sense, and that has to be on him too.

Remmers probably peaked that night Jacquizz first went off against USC on ESPN, and Remmers was playing right tackle. Last night, he single-handedly killed drives and put the QB at risk repeatedly. If that doesn’t cost him his starting job, what will it take?

    Two random things:

1: I liked Riley with the headset. He was obviously contributing to the gameplan/calling and it kept him much more excited and engaged in the game.

2: We’re now seeing Mannion do the exact same things that Katz got benched for. Not checking off, staring down primary reciever, etc. Mannion uses the pocket bette rthan Katz does, mainly because he doesn’t have the option of taking off. Mannion steps in then makes a bad throw rather than taking off,but the result is usually the same.

    • BeaverBeliever21 says:

Not checking off? Mannion did that plenty of times. I don’t know how you can say he didn’t check it off. He was not locking into primary receivers for much of the first half. He made some great throws. But he threw too much and was consistently getting hit hard cause O-Lineman kept missing blocks or did a horrible job blocking. Also, when you keep getting pushed back thanks to missed blocks and penalties it makes it rough on the QB. He tried to make some plays and force things and it resulted in some picks. Most of his picks did come when he was worn down and wanted to get the ball out quickly cause #50 was blowing assignments.

Even Andrew Luck wouldn’t look good at all when he has a horrible O-Line in front of him and especially when the guy protecting his blind side either blows assignments or commits penalties.

I don’t think Mannion has ever thrown the ball 66 times in a game in his life. Asking him to throw that much is just asking for him to be hit a lot. Derek Anderson as a senior was not asked to throw as much as Mannion who is a RS freshman. People need to lay off him a little bit. He made some poor decisions but it was just his second start and there were a lot of other things that made things even harder on him.

We can not just blame #50. The whole line, plus the backs need to take blame here for Mannion being on the ground almost every passing play. Also, the refs tried to give the game to the Sun Devils as well. A couple late hit calls, which at least a couple times should have been called would have stopped some of that as well.

I agree. Remmers was bad but the whole O-Line as a whole was bad. They did Sean no favors. There were tons of bad calls or bad no calls. That PI on Lance Mitchell was a phantom call. What about the illegal cut block that was called on James and wasn’t called on the Devils when they did the same thing constantly? That was frustrating. When you make dumb mistakes, turn it over and combine it with the refs never giving you any breaks it is impossible to win.

Still, he hung in there, showing a lot of physical and mental toughness. I doubt Katz would have done as well. And Mannion — unlike Katz — is going to continue to improve. I’m already looking forward to watching Mannion shred Arizona’s defense at Reser next Saturday…..

Sounds like it was Riley’s idea, and it makes sense. No way Langsdoof has the balls to alter his vanilla gameplan that drastically.

“I just felt like when we got in the game we would do whatever we needed to win it and it seemed to me like it was throw.”

“Rarely did Sean have time to have a second look which was the hardest part of our offense tonight. He didn’t have a chance to look at the next guy (in progressions) and especially in the red zone that hurts you.”

Kinda reinforces what I was saying about Mannion not checking down. Looked to me like late in the game the coaches were telling him he needed to go deep for the big play and that’s when he started chucking balls downfield at nobody in particular. Not saying it’s his fault, dude just had no time.

He also recovered that crichton forced fumble when he was in pass coverage in the flats. He got to the a gap for that fumble. On a separate play he chased a swing pass down from a pass rush. Do we not recruit offensive linemen? It seems like we just expect these guys to walk on, and develop? That happen, actually a lot… but what happens when you get a bum class or two in a row.. then there is no one to stand up because they have to be developed and are not ready to play until their third or fourth year. I haven’t paid much attention to official recruitment numbers of o-linemen, but I haven’t noticed that many of any. Is this a team philosophy thing? If so… we need to change that. At least pick up some junior college guys to fill in the blanks. I don’t see anything special from any of the linemen on the offensive side.

Yeah….the coaches have had a little success in the past making something good of walkons, but this is an age of better and better kids coming out of High School, and we should be getting our share of linemen. Not picking up some JC guys, after the poor line play last year, shows a real recruiting failure.

I listened to the game on radio, and the announcers made a big deal of the very poor tackling, and the very poor O line play. One one ASU long td run, they estimated 6 missed tackles. And holding penalties choking off moving the ball on offense.

This is all on the coaches, imo.

Is it a scholarship thing? Is there not enough scholarships to get lineman. If you have a good to great line you will have plays being made even if your QB, receivers, and RB’s are average. But not the other way around.

Again, comes back to coaching and making the right choices. Could some of the scholarships we spent at receiver and even running backs (3 new ones) been used for the line?

What supposedly makes the SEC great is their commitment to getting great lineman on both sides of the ball.

I don’t get people criticizing the Beavers for not running the ball. I think it was smart to run as little as they did… our O-line is not good enough for a balanced attack. We should only run once the defense starts adjusting to the pass attack. I recall one 3rd and 2 play where the Beavers came out in an I formation and the play action worked great.

But you can’t ask a freshmen to throw the ball 66 times on the road and expect to win the game. 6 to 1 pass/run ratio is madness with a pro formation and it caught up with Mannion eventually. What I think was odd, was that this seemed to be pre-ordained by the coaching staff and not an in game adjustment. The few times that they ran the ball there were actually some creases and the fly sweep worked a couple of times.. Mannion could have easily had 6 or 7 interceptions also. I just think it was a weird game plan. Riley is starting to crack!

Cleveland Browns threw 40 completions out of 61 attempts today and they were talking about how way up there that was. Mannion had 40 in 66 tries. If you look around I think you’ll see the average is about 25 in 40 tries.

So there ya go…. Mannion beat all the NFL QB’s this weekend in attempts and was planted 66 times on top of it. I don’t see Mannion at fault in this game even though the line made him look rough.

Mannion is not at fault no matter what. If he doesnt perform up to par, use a different quarterback. If you cant find QB’s up to running your offense, then either you are recruiting poorly or you are running the wrong offense. In any case, ITS ON THE COACHES.

I agree with Riley. Throwing the ball was their only hope of winning that game. I had no problem with the 70 passes.

People are saying Mannion wasn’t at fault. Well, he was since he threw INTs. The OL didn’t give him time, but he could have always taken a sack. He forced passes, and probably should have had 7INTs (if ASU could catch). That being said, he also showed a ton of upside. I’m 50-50 on him at this point. I see some Tom Brady and DA in him…which one wins out? That’ll probably be on the coaches and his supporting cast.

That’s pretty much how I feel about it too. I think the kid’s got a lot of upside and I hope he gets the chance to stand in the pocket and actually make reads someday.

Maybe I’m just used to rocketboy Katz, but Mannion’s deep balls seemed kinda floaty and lazy They are reporting that he has a bruised shoulder, and he had to be running out of steam by the 4th quarter…

I agree, too. We are not talking about tipped passes, or balls that were intercepted after bouncing off a receiver’s hands. All four interceptions were the result of bad reads or bad passes or both. And there were several other balls that should have been intercepted. That’s all on Mannion.

But anyone who watched the game understands what was going on. The ASU defense knew that Mannion would be passing on almost every play. This let ASU put fierce pressure on Mannion and the Beaver O-line. Our O-line (especially Remmers) cracked under this pressure. Eventually, so did our worn-down, beaten-up freshman QB. By the end, Mannion had a sore shoulder, and was flinging ill-advised passes to avoid being hammered any more. Not good, but understandable.

Mannion has a big upside. But he needs better support from the o-line and the running game. That’s obvious to everyone at this point. Doesn’t mean it’s easy to achieve…….

I have no problem with the number of passing plays, especially when you consider that most of them were short bubble pass type plays. Those are in essence a run play, you are just giving wheaton and rodgers a chance to “run” instead of our rbs. I would rather let our talent lake plays, that is how you win. Also, shows that they have confidence in mannion. This season is already over its about the future. I just wish they ran the slot drive more, they killed ucla with it I think half of wheatons catches were out of that play. The shallow drag is a main stay (a route on the slot drive) in the air raid. I see signs of air raid working at OSU (ala mike leach). Also anyone see the 3-4 last night? Signs of hope that this blog has been begging for….

Once OSU got behind on Saturday night, all of the passing became necessary. I agree that this is the best use of the talent at skilled positions. But did anyone notice Jim Harbaugh using OG’s and DT’s as tight ends and blocking backs in both running and passing situations on Sunday. Why not sub in a DT or better yet Wynn occasionally to help Remmers since (he can’t do it by himself and) there aren’t enough healthy/capable O lineman or blocking tight ends? I’m reasonably sure Wynn would put a hat on someone. When OSU needs a yard for a first down, why not use Seumalo or Castro as a blocking back? On defense, in obvious passing situations, why not have Crichton, Wynn and Fernando all on the field?

    Looking to the future:

Wynn, Chricton, Fernando, Fred Thompson offer a lot of hope on the D-line. Does Castro return next year? What other DT’s in the pipeline might be productive?

LB’s and DB’s should be fast, hopefully tackling better.

Mannion – I hope this O-line doesn’t make him gun shy.

Receivers – Solid, lots of depth.

RB – Riley and staff need to land a real good one this recruiting cycle. ****. They can’t rely on Agnew’s hamstrings.

O-Line Can we really expect it to be better? I expect more talent, but much less experience, and probably some odd position assignments by Cav. Darryl Jackson should get a good look, but he hasn’t sounded very interested in practices this year. Remmers “loss” will be addition by subtraction. There’s currently some promise in the existing commitments, but they’ll be true freshman and hopefully won’t change their commitments.

Can somebody give me reasons for hope on the o-line performance next year?

There is one way this year’s OSU football team can still leave a positive mark — beating Oregon in the Civil War. Unlikely, yes. But I think it’s possible. Really.

The Civil War is at Autzen, eight weeks from this Saturday. To beat Oregon, the Beavers will need to improve a lot between now and then.

Offense: Mannion needs to get experience (and stay healthy). The O-line needs a ton of work (and needs Josh Andrews to return and play well). We need to develop a running game (with or without Malcolm Agnew ). Joe Halahuni and James Rodgers need to become the players they used to be. Brandin Cooks has to get more involved (and play better).

Defense: OSU needs to keep improving in all areas (d-line, linebackers, secondary). Provide more playing time for the talented young players. Perhaps see what guys like Shaydon Akuna and DJ Welch, and Tyrequek Zimmerman can do in games. Keep working with Rashaad Reynolds (and get him to play more aggressively and instincitvely, as Jordan Poyer played against ASU). Etc.

Special teams: Give Trevor Romaine lots of field goal opportunities, including from longer range. Let TR develop confidence that he can make field goals from anywhere, under any circumstances. Keep working with Hekker, too (and let him keep trying to hone weapons such as the rugby kick, and the pooch punt, which Hekker clearly has not yet mastered). Etc.

OSU has seven weeks, and seven games, to make improvements in all these areas. If everything comes together, it is possible that the Beavers could be a dangerous team eight weeks from now. If the Ducks take us lightly (which is also quite possible), and we get some breaks….

Beating Oregon at Autzen would be a fantastic way to end a very tough 2011, and to provide great momentum for 2012. Many fans will dismiss the possibility. But OSU has talent. If the young players can get experience and improve a lot over the next seven weeks, the Beavers may have a shot. Or so it seems to me….

I think in Wynn and Chricton we finally have DE’s that are both physically talented and smart enough to play effectively against Oregon’s offense. If the DT’s can hold the middle, and the fast LB’s improve on tackling, I can see the D being competitive.

I am less optimistic about the O-line coming together to make the offense dangerous.

I have been surprised that OSU has kept UO under 40 these past two years. I am really fearing another 60+ plus thrashing of a mentally defeated OSU squad.

I am sorry but your post is insane! We lost to SAC ST. SAC ST! Have you seen Oregon play this season? Since the LSU game their offense has been basically unstoppable. I think it is crazy to talk about beating them right now. As much as I hate those guys, they are pretty damn good. They have only lost one league game since Chip started down there and he has never lost a game at home! I think we need to concentrate on Arizona, they are our last chance to win for a while I am afraid. Perhaps we can play against BYU at home. But sorry, it will be a while until we win in Autzen again. Sadly.

Agree that my post may well be insane. I just have a feeling that, if everything breaks right for the Beavers over the next seven weeks, OSU may have a puncher’s chance against the Ducks at Autzen this year.

I expect Mannion to improve a LOT over the next seven weeks. I also expect the OSU receiving corps (already strong) to get better (especially James Rodgers and Halahuni, but also Brandin Cooks and Obum Gwacham — Wheaton and Bishop are already where they need to be…) The big questions are the O-line and the running game. If we can somehow make improvements in those two areas, the Beavers will bring a potent offense into Autzen in eight weeks.

On defense, we won’t be able to stop the Ducks, but we have done a pretty good job the last couple of years in slowing them down. Our coaching staff does know the Ducks’ offense well, which helps.

It will take a great effort by the OSU coaching staff and players to pull it off. The Ducks will need to take us lightly. And we will need to get all the breaks during the game. That’s why it probably won’t happen. But seems to me — if all of this comes to pass — it’s possible. And that would be great for OSU and Beaver Nation — for lots of reasons.

    Well now, wasn’t that fun?

    1. I can’t believe nobody is complaining about the officiating. They weren’t the whole reason for the loss, but it started with them and continued on some key plays. The PI wasn’t even a phantom call. Mitchell was so badly burned that he was two yards off the receiver and looking the other way until the ball bounced away. I knew at that point that it was going to be a loss. Mannion should have had more INT’s, but his first two should have been called back because ASU was more than obviously offsides on both. In fact, I think the INT’s were a direct result of Mannion getting the snap early to get those calls, but the flags never flew. And while Marshall’s 37 yard TD run should have been stopped by one of the would-be tacklers, it was opened up by ASU’s RT dragging Wynn into the backfield by his facemask and pulling him down to the ground until Wynn threw off his helmet to get away… and then decided to try to pursue. You could see him standing in the endzone without his hat, all red-faced and wanting to yell at a ref after the play.

    2. I sure am glad we have all that experience on the o-line. I mean, it’s not as if a bunch of sophs and frosh could play at such an amazing level. Right?

    3. The defense was interesting for once. Line stunts and blitzes made for some good pressure and results. But if we’re going to play speed to the wide side, then a certain LB coach needs to tell his OLB to flatten his pursuit to the side. If Doctor comes at the WR from the side, the WR has two ways to move… backwards or to the sideline… not back inside like he did A LOT. That adjustment should have been made after the first time it happened… or the second… or the third. Hell, RR was so slow to get to those outs that he was able to play the sideline after the CB forced it outward. It was five yards down field instead of in the backfield like Doctor was playing. But the result was a five yard gain instead of a missed tackle three yards deep followed by a ten yard gain. And the one time Doctor does force to the sideline he grabs the facemask? DOH!

    4. Murphy looked good in coverage. I don’t know what happened to Mitchell in this game. He was rarely in on the play. Even Watkins looked improved in coverage. Their first TD should not have happened. Collins was in the wrong position to cover a WR cross. I don’t know if that was his fault or the scheme. But he needs to be waiting on the cross instead of following it. And their other passing TD was a blown coverage by Poyer.

    5. Poor Poyer… so hot, yet so cold. Read obviously needs to correct some issues on special teams. Forcing Romaine to directional kick while allowing Hekker to out-kick the coverage down the middle of the field is all the players’ faults. I mean, just think how bad it would be if Romaine were told to kick straight away and Hekker were told to hit for the sideline. Oh… the nightmare. I actually thought it was going to be that way when Hekker’s first punt went 41 yards and out of bounds. He should do that on every kick. The only positive I can gain from the rugby punt is that Hekker is looking to run if he’s not covered. Maybe he should try it INSTEAD of kicking. What could happen? He loses four yards? The horror!

At least the team looked like they came to play. If they show up like this in the first game, we’re likely looking at a 2-1 record going into this game. And that work would have translated to us being a better team for this game… despite our o-line.

From now on, I’m not even going to bother talking about the o-line. If I have something I want to say about them, I will just type “OL,” and you should all envision a big bundle of frustration, embarrassment and anger emanating from those two letters.

One positive… Mannion’s audible to the run on Ward’s TD was an exceptional call. If Katz had done that once against Sac State (when it was painfully obvious that he should have), he would likely still be the starter.

The Pac10 and now Pac12 refs never cease to amaze me. For a while I thought that they were biased against OSU but I finally settled on the idea that they are too incompetent to even be biased. One terrible call that stood out to me was on a play when they called a false start on Halahuni. An ASU D lineman jumped offsides so the center snapped it, Joe took off on the ball moving and the rest of the OL was a split second slow to react to the ball being snapped early. It may have looked like a false start but the ball had been snapped.

I haven’t seen anybody mention the blatant non-call on ASU offsides. It happened in the 3rd quarter I think. Mannion threw a pick on the same play. Watch the replay. One of ASU’s D-linemen is seen slowly walking back to the line of scrimmage. Oregon State quick snapped the ball in an effort to catch the lineman offsides. He was still even with the ball when it was snapped and even had his back turned when the play started. Then Mannion threw a bad pass right into the hands of an ASU player. It was a huge momentum killer but should have never happened because they should have easily made the offsides call on the ASU Defense. It was a heads up play by Mannion to get the ball snapped, but the Refs were f-ing blind.

just realized JackBeav caught that in an earlier post. people say you can’t blame the refs for a loss, but I can certainly say they had a direct effect on some major plays in this game that swung the momentum in a major way towards ASU. We have enough trouble overcoming our own shortfalls as a team, but we shouldn’t be battling bad calls by the refs that are easily reviewable. Riley really needs to do a better job of getting in their face when they f up. Maybe not to Mike Stoops levels, but at least bring some attention to the problem so the refs have something to review at half-time.

Whining about officiating is lame. If all penalties were detected and called, a game would take 10 hours to complete. The role of officials is to regulate the competition so that neither side gets an advantage due to cheating or other means relating to violations of the rules. A home crowd greatly influences the refs in most cases even in Beaverland. Mike Stoops tries to bully the refs. In the long run this will not work to his advantage. PAC 12 referees are ok, they just aren’t up to the level of robots or Madden software that some would like to see.

In the instances cited, they weren’t up to the level of people with eyes. There’s a difference between making a bad call in the heat of the moment and making a bad call which you never saw because it wasn’t close to happening. There’s also a difference between not calling holding on every play (which the casual fan misses) and refusing to call really obvious offsides (which every fan who is watching can see).

A good team overcomes egregious calls. But I think it’s hard for Mitchell to cover anyone if he gets called for PI whenever he’s within three yards of a WR. Why does he get the halo rule enforced against him on pass coverage?

This is one of the reasons I really don’t like football that much. They seem to think they’re a game of rules, but they tell us that they’re really not that important in the end. I’ve hated the NBA for 20 years for the same reason. And all that laziness is starting to bleed into college hoops now. Next will be baseball. Soon we’ll only have strike zones which vary according to how an ump feels.

            Oh… wait!
