The other thread was getting too long.

Discuss the weekend's results. Who impressed you?

UCLA impressed me most. Beavs are going to have their hand's full. Oregon put up a ton of points and looked good at times, but they also look a little weaker than in past years. Even in victory Stanford didn't impress me. QB is not good. USC played a horrible game, and their OC didn't try to slow the pass rush (screens, draws etc). Watching the Utah game now…no thoughts on it yet.

            Well, you obviously don’t know the LDS faith if you’re thinking Christianity has anything to do with it except for the vast plagiarism of the very incorrectly translated King James version of the bible. It’s a sad story of bad con men plagiarizing from many others and taking money and power.

            Then again… that sounds in line with every other religion to some extent.

            Hell,from a logical perspective the only “religions” that have a leg to stand on were the native Americans who basically worshipped the earth. At least the Earth is fuckin real,and it actually gives you the shit you need to survive. Weren’t there some others (Egypt maybe?) That worshipped the sun? Once again,there it is in the sky. I can see it. It’s real. No faith/brainwashing/tithing required.

    The Wisconsin game was fun, but we still don’t know the teams “identity”. I don’t really have a grasp of how good UCLA or AZ is because the opponents are unknown to a certain point. And the Ducks look awesome, but they should in whom they have played. Will certainly be interesting to see how the Beaver D stacks up with UCLA’s offense. And hopefully Mannion gets time next week and lets some of the deep routes materialize before he dumps the ball. When I play my buck on the Lottery I am a potential millionaire at least until they draw the numbers. My buck is for the couple day entertainment of being a potential millionaire. The Beavs are in a position that they could have the PAC 12 championship in Corvallis. . . at least until next Saturday. So this week will be a lot more fun than any week last year.

      While we don’t KNOW the teams identity we do have some indicators. The intensity shown on D against Wisc, and the several indicators that Riley is more focused should, at least, hint that this team is much different than the last two seasons. Add in experience for many players and we have a group which is much more fun to follow.

      Only the very next game matters (and yes, recruiting too), GO BEAVS !

        Another note on identity coming out of the win against Badgers. Seeing Dylan Wynn on the sidelines give credit to the DB’s for another Wynn/Creighton fumble recovery is a sign, to me at least, that this D is the real thing. Depth still an issue but I’ll take that in place of a lack of team spirit anytime.

          Agreed that defense may be the identifier for the team, or maybe at least from the fan’s perspective. Like one of the guys said, the line and the secondary used to never talk to each other, and this year they are. That jelling should create a balance that leads to run stuff=try to pass=covered receivers=smooshed QB by Wynn/Chrichton. (how’s that for a simpleton breakdown?)

    This just in:

    Fink is not a good coach.

    UW beat the only Oregon team they’re going to beat this year. The bad news for them is they will need to win all four games after the OSU game just to be bowl eligible. The good news is they might do it (they won’t).

    CU at Wazzu will be epic.

    Really Kentucky? Arkansas? Auburn? Wasn’t the Sun Belt paid to create football in order to be an SEC punching bag?

      WKU aka Stanford lite. You gotta love that a mid-major has better players than an SEC school. I’m thinking that the joke is going to be on Joker Phillips in about two months. Chizik should be planning on which FCS school he’s going to end up at in about two years. John L.Smith will be in jail by then, so no need to worry about coaching. Alabama just needs to become a new NFL franchise.

    Angry, I think Stanford is better than many are giving credit for. I think QB Nunes is an athlete who has/will improve to surprise some people. Don’t sleep on him.
    Also, I think their O-line just slowly wore down USC and could do the same to many teams this year. Watch for them to be good closers in the 4th quarter due to this.

            We were anchored on the downriver end of Duncan. The best shore fishing is between Brickerville and Swiss Home. And if you go up Old Stagecoach Rd. you’ll find a bunch of spots for some great trout fishing… and maybe pull in a nice salmon. You can also get there from Eugene just after Linslaw… just past the Whittaker Creek cut-off. In fact, the north side of the Whittaker Creek cut-off goes to Old Stagecoach. Follow that into the hills and there’s some really good fishing this time of year. I usually drop a couple traps with chicken trailings in them and bring home a bunch of crawdads.

            Not sure on that. But then I grew up thinking a chinook is only a king if it’s over 15 pounds and any rainbow over 20″ is a steelhead. I’ve never kept blue backs because I’ve always been after another fish when I do catch them.

            I do know you don’t mess with bull trout. And there are freshwater populations of cutthroats which are off limits because environmental factors like fire, logging erosion, and ag/water diversion severely limit them.

            All I know is if it’s longer than two feet, I’m likely keeping a fish.

            Another fun thing to do is to hit the jetties and around the rock dock for cod. I don’t know if it’s legal, but we used to do what we call poke-pull on the jetty. You get down in the surf and poke a 1/2″ pvc tube with a line threaded through a couple holes and a hook with bait. You could hook some jetty-bound cod by just pulling a couple up through the rocks.

            That was long ago. I’m sure some shore casting in the surf is pulling in good fish right now. I’ve heard casting beyond the buoys is pulling in some nice ones this year as well. The only thing that sucks about Florence is that the easiest access costs $5 on the south side. But the north side has some interesting slack water just as you turn down the hill and out to the jetty. I’d love to know how that area casts.

        You are right, a team like UCLA will get a lot of money bet on them by casual fans. Although any line that is too out of wack will get pounded by the professorial bettors. It will be interesting to see how the line moves this week. It will probably drop tomorrow and the next day. By game time it will most likely climb back up to where it is now, as all the square money pours in,

        And lots of books don’t mind if they don’t get equal action on a game. They take sides just like the bettors do. Of course they do have a nice 10% vig to play with.

    Here’s realistic Bruin fans insight:

    “I’m very concerned that our offense may be coming down to earth now that teams have some tape on us. We were unable to get any push up front until KP came in for two garbage time drives – our rushing yards for this game are pretty misleading. A lot of what we have done earlier in the season is changing the point of attack, which can hide some of the flaws on the OL and play to an element of surprise; worried that if Oregon State can blow up our run game, there will be a lot of pressure for Hundley to make throws. (and it wasn’t just the red zone where he was locking on receivers, he missed seeing some wide open receivers, particularly in the middle). And we are not going to win many games giving up 5 turnovers.”

    While I agree the Vegas line is a bit out of whack I still think UCLA is a TD favorite. I hope I am wrong but Wisconsin is looking like a .500 ball club and UCLA is looking like a 9-3 type club… shoot they could even contend for the P12 South. Plus this game is at UCLA a place where Mike Riley and the Beavs have historically struggled. At least we don’t have to worry about home town clock keepers any more though.

    YThis is a weird season, so far..

    A lot will become clearer when teams get into their conference play.

    Is UO actually sloppy and mistake prone? Is Wisconsin really weak or are NIU and USU strong this year?

    Is our defense really that good? Can our offense start racking up points like we projected?

    Is USC actually weak or is Stanford that strong?

    I expect the matchups are one key, as Canzano said. Stanford might be very tough for us, but easy pickins for UO.

    But all things considered, I think we have a decent shot at a winning record. Gonna be interesting.

    • Max says:

      Did Canzano really say that? I see Stanford’s D-line giving Oregon’s depleted offensive line a ton of trouble. That bogus penalty on Poyer in last year’s Stanford game really turned the momentum of that game. If that TD stood, OSU would have been in the game until the end.

      How much does USU have to do to prove they are a solid team?

        Yeah, in his 3 words for UO.

        I think we are still in the mode that the BCS conferences are always strong, and the rest weaker. But the ability of kids growing up to get good coaching and good training keeps increasing, and the result is, there are more really good athletes to go round. So the top programs are still usually strong, but the lesser programs get stronger and stronger.

        But its still hard to accept this. When Appalachian State took out Michigan, it was front page stuff for SI, but now it happens every year.

    I haven’t been able to watch the UCLA game yet, but I am loving the P12 network showing 60 minute cutups of the games so I can still see the game if I missed it on Sat.

    I see a couple positive things going for the game on Sat,

    1. In general, OSU plays well against freshman QBs or first year starters.
    2. Mora is a pro style coach, another area where the coaching staff matches up well.
    3. The secondary looks very strong. Hitting hard, wrapping up and coverage has been excellent.

    The game plan doesn’t seem too disimilar from Wisconsin. Win at the point of attack and shut down the running game. Force Hundley to win it through the air against a pair of strong corners.

    Couple concerns –
    1. UCLA is hot and at home. Beavers have fared poorly on the road esp at UCLA.
    2. Hundley is a mobile QB.

    All in all, I think the Beavs can win this one if they are able to stuff the run and establish their own running game. Not sure the D can bring the same game on the road. I expect a dropoff but the offense should also be better.

  • ObjCritic says:

    I think the main questions are pretty basic, driven by line play, red zone production, and special teams performance:

    1) can the OSU d-line maintain it’s intensity for four quarters to allow the LB’s to make plays? They looked to be losing their push in the fourth against Wisconsin and I think UCLA has better athletes;

    2) Can OSU’s o-line provide a REAL running game – not just just 4.1 YPC, but some long runs and some time-eating drives?

    3) Can OSU finish in the redzone and come away with TD’s?

    4) If all the above are achieved, will OSU’s special teams be able to do their job, or will they cost OSU the game by missing field goals and giving away field position with poor punts? I think these kickers may struggle in this environment. They seem to overthink their respective kicks, even at home without an opposing fan base.

That is not the fault of the qb. It is in fashion to dump on Maynard. He played well enough to win if you stick to the facts and avoid prejudical hype. Cal will sneak up and beat someone by accident in the PAC 12.

I still say that Cal embarrassed OhioSt… Cal sucks and ohst needed major homerism from big10 refs AND shitty fg attempts by cal to just squeak out the win… Next I was surprised by ASU. He’s using him as an inactive player. I think he wanted to use him as a PR/KR, but his preseason flubs in that department make him not useful right now. I don’t know if he sees the field this year unless SF trades away a couple of the other four RBs on the roster ahead of him (not counting the two FBs).

            AZ runs the spread. OSU defences do not stop the spread. We will lose. Sadly, the win against Wisc. is not as great as we origionally thought. I loved how the D played in that game but I am still skeptical that we can score enough to win in league. Banker seems completely unable to put up a game plan to even slow a good spread team. I think we will play really well against teams like BYU, UW and Cal, but will struggle against UCLA, AZ and Ore.

            Banker can beat the spread, but not with the personnel he has had. Is that his fault for not recruiting properly? Yeah, probably it is mostly his fault. We have beat the ducks(running the spread) when we had good personnel and I believe we have good personnel this year. Arizona is a good team, not great. They have not been up a good defense yet, along with UCLA and the ducks. This week we will start to see how things pan out. Excited to finally see the season start. As much as I would LOVE to be wrong about this, I think the Ducks will continue to be a dominant team within the conference so long as key players on offense stay healthy. I think they actually leave the first string in the game for more than one quarter and handle Arizona comfortably in Eugene.

        I think the Ducks’ ability to play the bench early is going to be beneficial later in the season. If they can continue to play the bench for significant periods of time, they’ll really develop their depth and reduce injury risk to their offensive stars.

          The key injuries that the ducks have suffered already (mostly in weak games) are just the tip of the iceberg. Weak links will substantially damage the integrity of the chain because excessive stress will be put on the remaining links. Dennis Dixon anyone?

        Everything is cyclical, so what goes up must come down. We will see though, perhaps not this year. You are wrong about being able to get starters out of the game. This is the PAC-12.. not the high school teams the ducks have been playing(with the exception of Colorado… there are some high school teams that could beat them… maybe we could set up an exhibition game… Jack?). If the ducks lose either Black Mamba or Barner… things start to fall apart.

          I actually don’t think the loss of DAT would kill them, but losing Barner would. My point about keeping the first string in for more than one quarter was that they have been killing (cupcakes, I know) with their bench playing most of the game. Now that the conference play is beginning, you are going to see them actually play the 1’s for most of the game, and I think they’ll be able to handle AZ in Eugene.

          I understand they are breaking in a newborn baby jesus QB and they lost LaMike, but my sense is this is one of the deepest Duck teams we have seen so far, and I think they probably absorb the OL and safety loss fairly smoothly. If injuries continue to pile up, obviously that is a problem for them. We’ll have to see where they are at the end of conference play and if they will still be healthy enough to compete for the title, but as of right now, I really doubt they lose to AZ.

        I’m just thinking it’s stupid to drink while training at that level, let alone doing it after a game when you should be maximizing your body’s healing capacity. It’s stupid to be able to afford to buy a new car and hire a driver within an hour, yet you get in your car and floor it at 5am. And then it’s stupid to submit to any roadside sobriety tests.

        Stupid is as stupid does.

          Explain that Jack. If you refuse to submit to roadside sobriety tests, and display objective signs of intoxication or smell of alcohol, you WILL go directly to jail. Do you suppose the officer will just say, “Dang, no tests, guess I got to cut this one loose.”? Later on, when you get your day in court, if you’re so innocent of D.U.I., explain to the jury why you refused the tests. Follow me? If you’re not intoxicated, take the tests, prove it. You stonewall and you have NO defense later on. And by the way, while you flounder about trying to convince that same jury you are innocent, (with nothing to support you) the arresting officer is going to eloquently describe your unlawful driving and objective signs of intoxication to the very same jury. Juries tend to believe police officers over defendants, just the way it is.

          The “refusal” defense does not work, has never worked, and is not good advice to be putting out to people.

            I believe most states have laws that say your license will be revoked for six or twelve months immediately if you do refuse to submit to field sobriety tests. And yes, you go straight to holding until they can obtain a warrant to gain such evidence.

            But that defense does work for people with means. You’re correct. The majority of stupid schmucks who drink and drive won’t be able to avoid penalty in this circumstance. But someone who can hire a half decent lawyer will likely skate. I think it’s excellent advice to put out there if the penalties are increased. I have no qualms telling anyone who drinks and drives to roll the dice. And I wish our legal system was as efficient as you seem to think it is with regards to this crime. If my advice sends more losers to the clink, I will advise more losers in such a way.

            I suppose your right about money talking. We’ve all seen people skate behind dollar bills, (OJ comes to mind) but most of us aren’t rich, and the average Joe is going to go down for a refusal, and rightfully so.

            In most states, when you get popped for DUI, your car gets towed, there’s an automatic license suspension and yet get a weekend in jail upon conviction, plus a hefty fine. It’s just not cool or acceptable anymore like it seemed to be back in the day.

            Gross injustices are done in our legal system regularly, that’s a fact. It’s a flawed system, but for the most part, it works on the masses. The thin blue line and the fear of jail is what keeps most of us commoners in check. People are inherently bad, deep inside, and would do very bad things to others if they thought they could get away with it.

      I actually think ought to make a concerted effort to secure his LOI based on the following:

      If OSU has a significantly progressive season in terms of wins and losses and can sell that they’re on the upswing;

      UO receives any notable punishments;

      The fact that Tyner could play behind what could be one of OSU’s best offensive lines in a long time (and don’t forget the addition of Keller);

      OSU has a solid QB situation for the next 3 years at least;

      OSU will likely be able to platoon backs more than ever with the likes of Woods and the potential of Brown. Throw Tyner in there and get creative and you could have an offense that’s difficult to defend and reduces his injury risk. The tough part here for OSU coaches is the creativity;

      If he’s interested in being a track pioneer at OSU instead of a part of a track legacy at UO; and finally,

      He’s a young, impressionable, and at least until early last year appeared to have genuine interest in OSU.

      Clearly, the spread suites him and UO’s track legacy is likely very attractive. But, if you want to get better, you have to get better players, so try to turn him from the dark side with your best selling points.

        I don’t read to much into that. Comparing previous years bye weeks. To me it is really impossible to get anything out of. It depends more on your talent and the talent of the other team.

        I think the more important thing to look at is Riley’s September record, and having a team ready. We all know that record.

        With that said I think OSU is hungry and UCLA is probably cocky at this point so I see a win.

            I’m not about to do the research, but I do believe there is a correlation between bye weeks and shortened weeks and mike Riley’s win loss record. When less than a week I think Riley gets hammered, and more than a week he surprises. That’s big picture stuff and of course any given game is small picture and who knows. But I believe more in this stat than the “Beavs #2 in national rush defense” this season stat.
