Go Beavs.
Go Beavs,
Gameday already talking about the game on the preshow. I believe there is a segment on Gameday about the Beavs as well.
For those who missed Riley on his bike at gameday

I feel real good about Cody and think he will do well in game today. Weather forecast for Provo is mid 60′s and partly cloudy. Perfect football weather. Is there an IN n Out Burger outlet in Provo? Is Beaverjuice allowed in Utah?
I’ll stick with my original prediction…….31 – 17 Beavers take another win.
I like the Beavers D today despite the fact BYU has the more experienced QB, the home field crowd and record (27-3 in last 30 as Angry pointed out), and the age advantage. Both kicking games are atrocious.
But this is not the Beaver defense BYU defeated last year; BYU’s offense isn’t as good as it was last year, and YU is facing a much better Beaver offensive line and improved RBs. BYU meanwhile has lost a number of players to injuries this year.
I’m predicting at least one INT by Nelson, that he’ll only be able to run when Robinson’s in the game, and that he won’t finish due to back injury.
I wouldn’t want the game to come down to a field goal. Hope OSU can deliver in the red zone, or, if need be, from the infrequent big play outside the redzone.
This is not the likely game where OSU “puts it all together,” but this is the first team in a while that believes it can win and is willing to put in the work to earn the win. Vaz may not look the next coming of Drew Brees, but he’ll be smiling after the game and the team will grow from this and move on.
Entertaining read from the salt lake tribune regarding the “rare” opportunity BYU has today to play a #10 team, and some criticism that OSU doesn’t really look like a #10 team. The article also indicates the BYU fan base is getting frustrated with Mendenhall. I wasn’t aware of it, but the fans have been frustrated with his handling of QB decisions and the lackluster offense. Hmmmmm….
Mendenhall is 4-11 against ranked teams.

Did anyone else see the GameDay piece on Riley?
Overall a very nice representation of Corvallis and the overall small town college setting, but I felt it depicted Riley as an almost Forest Gump like simpleton, slowly riding his old-fashioned bike all over town greeting everyone he meets.
Looking for a close low scoring game today. Still can’t get excited about the Vaz. Don’t forget he should be the 3rd string QB. BYU 10 Beavs 7. JB
Glad it represented Corvallis well. I think Corvallis has improved nicely over the years, albeit slowly. That kind of representation can’t hurt recruiting.
Eugene, in contrast, seems to be rapidly degrading.
Low scoring, probably. But I still see a Beavers win. Whatever mojo Nelson had hasn’t been much on display this year – relatively low completion rate of 58%, 5:5 touchdown:int ratio, bad back, stagnant offense. Vaz has more assistance everywhere, and the OSU D is likely better than BYU’s.
Should be an interesting, if sometimes ugly, matchup.
Given that Vaz gets rid of the ball quickly, something the coaches like, I’m not so sure he wouldn’t have passed Katz on the depth chart this year for the better of the team. Katz just didn’t consistently show he had the mental and “feel” aspects of the game down.
I think since BYU would have started Hill means Nelson is not 100%. That may give us an edge with a healthy but scared quarterback vs an experienced but injured quarterback. Nelson may not be able to make it through the whole game.
As others have said, this will be a defensive struggle.
We will have to adjust to BYU constantly blitzing and trying to kill Vaz. Probably no TDs. Can’t miss field goals today.
Then, we dominate on coach’s names. Bronco is a stupid name. Bronco Mendenhall is even more stupid; does not go together. It should be Bronco Smith or Buddy Mendenehall. What use is a name like Bronco in Provo? That’s even more stupid. “Hi, I’m Bronco from Provo.”
Beavs 8 BYU 3
Ahh, the “coaches-name” factor, we’d all neglected that. I like it, but it doesn’t pan out consistently. “Chip Kelly” whom my Duck friends call “The Chipster,” is a terrible name. But he’s a great coach. Other examples here in the dead time?
I’ve held off placing a bet all week on this. I can’t muster up enough doom and gloom to bet against the Beavers in spite of my best efforts. I don’t think BYU is that great – they’ve played mediocre talent this year resulting in their all-world defense reputation. They’re the same cheap shotting bastards as before, but they’ve shown near zero ability to put points on the board.
We’re probably going to see Vaz throw an INT or two, but I think the defense will bail him out, he’ll settle down and do just enough for the 17-10 win, including at least one empty trip to the red zone (a Romaine FG miss).
I like the money line bet, but no matter how you slice it, 5.5 points is too much to give the Beavers. Easy money.
Finally someone who makes sense. Except I don’t expect the score to be that close unless our defense gets no takeaways.
Our team of frosh and sophs was slapped around by these cheap shot bastards. Remember Romaine getting shoved into the pile from behind (and getting called for a late hit and yelled at by Remmers the all pro)? Remember Castro and Feti getting hurt? Remember our team standing around like they were just bitch-slapped?
That’s not going to happen this year.
Buh-bye BYU!
Yeah, there will no doubt be a defining moment or two early where the Beavers send a message that they aren’t going to be steam rolled like that again. Our guys were intimidated and embarrassed last year…and I doubt they’ve forgotten that.
Mannion or Vaz…it doesn’t matter. Beavers WILL make a statement today.
I was high in confidence this week, but I’m dropping to reality. I’m nervous as hell for Vaz and his inexperience. I still believe in the D tho!
GO BEAVERS
Everyone mentions either our defense, Vaz or some other part of our team play. Is mentioning “play calling” a taboo on this forum. I believe this is a very important part of wining a game. The players execute (or supposed to) the plays sent in by Mike Riley. Play calling in first part of game should give Vaz a comfortable time in getting settled in. After that, a somewhat aggressive and varied play calling should follow including in the red zone. Riley has got to open and use the entire playbook today……..another words 7 points instead of the usual 3 point field goals. Keep scoring until the end of the game.
I dont think tv will catch the start of the game. previous game(Texas/Oklahoma) had injury stoppage. should he over by now but still in 3rd quarter. its a blowout too, but seems like the tv networks rarely leave a game early.
I really wish they would for the West Coast audience. Game is a complete blowout and has little value outside of the Big 12 South now. I want to see every second of the OSU-BYU game. The start of games is always fun to see which team grabs momentum. End of the Red River Rivalry is a dud. 49-8 Oklahoma now.
Fuck me with a chainsaw. I’m in Iowa visiting family and ABC is showing WVU. Can I stream the game off comcast’s site or will they not have it because it’s an ABC game?
So to defend Vaz, you just stick your hands up.
Maybe, if we have a short QB, we should get him OUT OF THE POCKET!!!
Beautiful punt. Hecker had a boot, but I’ll take this guy’s consistency and ability to pin them inside the 20 every time.
Can he kick FGs?
We don’t believe in running the ball. Does Riley not realize our run blocking has been sick? All we do is throw throw throw…
OH MY GOD, these fucking Mormon refs. This is absurd. Fuck us some more, at least buy us dinner first, you pieces of garbage.
Notice our linebackers NEVER do anything anymore? They had their names called a lot in the first few weeks, but not anymore. That was the #1 problem last year, and it’s now our #1 problem again.
Doctor, Welch, etc need to step up or get out of the way.
The 2 penalties killed us even before the drive. Have you ever noticed that OSU gets penalties that no one else gets? When did you last see an illegal shift on a punt play followed on the next play by a 15 yard helmet penalty?
I like that Cody hasn’t been forcing anything. BYU has had good coverage.
Of course, they can just blitz+cover every play because we refuse to run the ball and keep them honest.
Is something wrong with ALL of our RBs, or is Riley just determined to make a passing star out of our backup QB?
Seeing Sean Martin continually give up big plays is really starting to piss me off. Every time he’s covering Hoffman it’s a first down. The other DB’s have been fine, really, Martin has been crappy as usual. Jesus christ.
How about some fly sweeps or a reverse?! Give Storm the ball some more. Need more balance. Defensively, Sean Martin. That’s all I’m going to say.
This looks like last year’s play calling. Are they using any more than 5 different plays in this game. Open up the play book.
Even though we didn’t get the sack, I like the D. Kept him contained, and kept the receivers in front of us.
Fullback is awesome…. love him.. hopefully that shuts fighting beaver up for a sec. I think he has this comments on auto type or something. Same 5 comments over and over.
Words can not describe…..
That kind of play normally happens against the Beavs…not for us.
This game is goinig to kill me today….breathe…..breathe.
I don’t think that BYU can score twice to win this thing the rest of the way…unless they get help from us somehow. Let’s hope not….
These announcers are retarded, and got the rule completely backward. You can’t run into someone and NOT look at the ball lol.
Why both of the announcers so biased? They didn’t talk about the bad calls against us today, yet they continue to talk about the penalties that we commit.
Great win for the Beavers. Never saw 42 points coming. Vaz was extremely impressive. Stood in there and took some shots but made great throws. Great performance. 5-0! Go Beavs!
I’m impressed that 3 of our 5 wins have been on the road. And, no push-overs either.
UO has had 1 road game to a neutral site.
That was no road game. Closer to Eugene than Pullman. More duck fans than there were husky fans at the Thursday Stanford game. That was no road game. There first road game is onThursday, and surprise, its after a bye week
Quick position grades:
QB: A- Vaz played like a good starter. He found open players, went through all his reads, and didn’t force anything.
RB: B While they didn’t get a lot of chances, the RBs picked up solid yards, including that last, huge run by Agnew. Storm had a rough blocking day, topped by an injury, which is very sad, but Agnew looks ready to be #1 again. Also, Anderson played extremely well, as usual.
WRs: A+ The best corps on our team played like it, making big plays, great catches, and getting open continually. Even our TEs got in on the action with a few huge receptions.
OLine: B The line opened a decent number of holes for the RBs, and pass blocked reasonably well. Vaz was sacked or hurried a few times, but it was pretty normal overall. Also, offensive line penalties were down, although the back-to-backs by Kelly were brutal.
DLine: A- Considering they were asked to apply pressure with only 3 rushers most of the game, they were spectacular. Chrichton went off, Castro was very good, everything just worked well.
LBs: D Except for Robinson making a freak INT on a horrible play, the LBs did nothing all game, and the middle-of-the-field was open all day. Also, the option, and the pitch-back inside shredded us many times, and that’s the LB’s job.
DBs: B+ Can’t get an A with Martin playing significant time, because he blows everything. Poyer came up big with a pick and some defenses, same with Reynolds. The safeties did a good job of keeping plays in front of them, and only one or two big plays happened all game.
K: C+ Made all his PATs, kicked one kickoff out-of-bounds. At least he didn’t kick any FGs.
P: A+ Spectacular game, drilling long punts and pinning BYU all day.
Overall, the offense and defense played well for about 2/3rds of the game each, which is up from about 1/2 of the game from the past few. Our LBs and Martin are going to get us murdered in the Civil War if they don’t step up, but I like our team basically every where else.
OSU should be at least 7 when the standings come out. West Virginia got pummeled and South Carolina-LSU play each other. Beavers were already gonna be 9 from what I saw before the upsets. Should be 7th tomorrow.
The Beavers are undefeated since Mike Remmers finish his career at OSU. The football gods were just punishing the team for him playing. Now that he’s gone OSU is alright in their book.
Only 2 away games the rest of the season, and 1 of those is neutral and will have a ton of fans traveling up to Seattle. Get your UW tickets now, I’m sure their fans will be selling them on craigslist after they lose to USC today.
Random thoughts:
I have never been happier to be wrong in my life, and I will gladly feast upon the crows.
To me, it’s the play of our TE’s that has intrigued me the most. Ever since that dropped catch in the endzone against Washington I have written them off as a part of a program we’d never have again- but Prince and Hamlett came up HUGE.
I can’t wait til Reuben Robinson graduates. With his departure we’ll see OSU’s D become as effective as OSU’s offense when Remmers left.
I’m still going to be paranoid that all this success is going to lead to a ridiculous, heartbreaking, mind-numbing, and soul-crushingly embarrassing upset – but after seeing Vaz do his thing I have to say that it’s safer to be confident about this group.
However, Banker still demonstrates that he doesn’t respond well to certain plays that gash us for huge yards, especially when it comes to deep balls, qb runs, and plays where LB’s need to be in the right spot and have the right speed when it’s needed.
Still- it was a hell of a win.
Last time I checked, Robinson has a red-zone INT and the rest of the LBs did jack shit. Be careful what you wish for.
And Cliffy can join Banker in the unemployment line. 6-3? Pathetic pick, dude.
Yeah they gave up a lot of yards, however, Byu had 84 plays, which is an 4.7 yd per play. So, all in all not bad by the defense. Hard to stay off the field when the defense is scoring. Now that said, the penalties are getting frustrating and if they run the ball more they control the clock more. Came in leading nation in time of posssesion and lost the TOP to byu. 5-0 and still some things to improve on.
Major props to Vaz for being ready and throwing some great balls. The defense made plays when they had too. Great win!
Vaz was great. A tough quarterback. He took a lot of hits and made a fantastic block/tackle. He will do even better next week against Utah. I just hope we wear black. Is it a black out next week? I get confused over color. Orange and Black are OK but white sucks.
Great win Beavers, congratulations! In N Out for everyone.
