USC Post Game

64

I encourage people to look through Mannion’s numbers here; the guy just isn’t clutch in big games. He seems to put up the best numbers in games that mean nothing. The biggest games last year were probably Washington and Oregon, and in both he threw 4 INTs. This year, Stanford and USC are the biggest games, and he laid an egg tonight, and underperformed vs Stanford.

We’ll see if this trend continues.

Riley laid another egg tonight, too. To get out-athleted is one thing, but to come out flat is another. Beaver football is hilarious. Every time I buy in and think I my overarching hypothesis might be wrong, Riley is there to reel it back in and make me look good. Thanks, coach. That’s probably the only thanks you’re getting tonight.

The questions are : how long can this go on? Do donors ever get tired of this obvious pattern? Are they too dumb to see it?

Arizona State is one of the worst matchups on the schedule. The Beavs could get blown out in each of the next three games. I had Washington at 50/50 a few weeks ago, but that was after I fell into the trap (again!) and had a bout of optimism.

  1. Yep…..that game sucked the big ones….

What is up with Riley? We know he is bad on clock management, but WHY?!? Even a little kid could do it better. He isnt stupid, but he must be …what, slow witted? Tomorrow he will realize he needed to control the clock there in the second half….?

I have said it shows he just doesnt really care about winning, but that cant be so. So he must just be so slowminded that he cant manage things, like clock management, that need quick thinking. In interviews he never talks fast and even with slow speech what he says takes no genius. Slow witted??

    • Yes, he’s a simpleton, but he’s also conservative by nature. There’s a rumor he worked out a deal with McMenamins–free cheeseburger for every timeout he brings in.

    • It’s probably pretty shitty and I don’t even want to see the numbers! It seems like at some point every season even the bottom feeder teams catch on to our schemes and make us look like garbage. Those orange unis I was excited about, but they looked worse and worse with every 3 & out. What a waste of National publicity. Why were the announcers not playing the chainsaw song more? Why was USC allowed to damage Mullaney like he was just some a-hole so let’s not give him any calls!?!?!?!1!?!? I don’t EVER want to see those orange unis EVER again!!!!

      • Yep. Really should have swithced those Orange Unis up to the more important Stanford game and gone from there. Shoulda, coulda, woulda, story of BDC.

      • Wait… this makes sense. There are parts that make it clear you haven’t been watching college football very long and others that are weird. But it actually makes sense for once.

        What happened?

        • I mentioned on a previous blog that his posts are much improved lately and that he seems ready to put aside crazy/stupid antics and participate in entertaining an relevant manner.

  2. Riley’s very much in the right place at the right time with the right AD for his career. It feels like we all just have to bend over and take it. I don’t know what else you can do when a head coach can get an extenstion for a 6-6 record and the New Mexico Bowl? Did anyone see anything that resembled a game plan? USC is sort of Stanford lite without the same level of coaching, but Riley just did the same things he did against Stanford.

    • before we make any rash decisions, let’s let the clock run for three minutes and then call timeout when the other team has the ball 3rd down with 20 seconds left before half. Then we can discuss our options.

  3. I thought the Colorado fanbase was pathetic last year because some fans thought they had to put up with a poor coach in Embtee and bumbling AD. They got rid of their ciach and AD though and proved capable of doing what was necessary. Truth is OSU’s fanbase is a 100 times more disfunctional on that we feel we have no choice but to keep letting BDC drag us down, consecutive home losses to FCS teams and poor unbalanced coaching and always losing in spotlight and big games that we have the lowest ranked Pac-12 recruiting class. This fanbase licks BDC nutsack and we should recognize how piss poor of management and expectations we have. Give Casey the AD role after this season and get rid of everyone else except maybe Rueck. Riley lingering here for too long won’t do OSU any favors. Beaver Nation needs to clean house and get all new blood and quit being scared of needed change. We need to quit letting BDC at Co. hijack OSU. This is our university and we need new direction and new leadership!

In the first year of these changes Casey can be AD, Baseball Coach and Football Coach.

  4. the real question is, how long will non-stupid beaver fans put up with it before they start voting with their wallets? To anyone who believes Riley will ever get this program to a Rose Bowl or other BCS bowl game? You are seriously fucking stupid if you believe so

    • DeCarolis has said repeatedly that he intends to stay on as AD until all football renovations are complete, despite his Parkinson’s disease. And despite how carelessly he manages our primary money teams, our fan base continues to trust he is doing well managing their money toward these projects. I can’t stand BDC and I highly recommend tight scrutiny on any of his renovation managements.

        • Not at all. I think his inability to be a proactive AD interferes with his ability to do his job. I only mention his Parkinson’s cause I think it interfers with our ability to get rid of him as our AD.

          • But I could always word it better, but I’m not PC. The guy is wasting opportunities to improve our programs, and thus wasting opportunities to have much more income. The income of which he is wasting by being a bad manager of our program. Round and round. So why doesn’t he get fully scrutinized and canned? Pathos.

          • It’s not PC. You said something you didn’t want to say.

And what’s the new trend with doing the wrong thing and excusing yourself for being a douche by calling everything PC? I’m not talking about you here, except for your incorrect use of “PC” even in a douche way. But right is right, and wrong is wrong. PC has little to do with it.

      • Great. So you mean to tell me we cant shake this guy? I swear he’s gonna try and stick around past his prime like Michael j fox

        • That’s exactly what I’m saying. Our fan base isn’t cohesive enough to demand change and Ed Ray will let his pathos get in the way of his logos.

        • WHY DOESN’T SOMEONE TELL SOMEONE IMPORTANT THAT THE AD HAS A TERMINAL ILLNESS WITH NO CURE. IT’S NOT HIS FAULT AND VERY SAD. BUT, IT WOULD BE BEST FOR HIM TO STEP ASIDE TO ATTEND TO HIS HEALTH WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY FAR MORE IMPORTANT. OFFER HIM A GOOD RETIREMENT PACKAGE WITH FULL HEALTH INSURANCE, AND LETS ALL FUCKING MOVE ON!

  5. Angry doesn’t even begin to describe my feelings about the complete implosion on both sides of the ball. Oh GOD DAMN IT!!!! Fire Mike Riley Dot Com

    • USC wasn’t doing anything really special. Mannion just had a bad game and made some poor decisions. I hope it’s just that. Everyone has a bad day now and then. If he makes similar throws next week it will be a problem.

  6. Tonight sealed it for me. I will not be renewing my season tickets. I can handle losing but I cannot handle a coaching staff that appears to not care if they win.

  7. Oregon State Teasers.

In the MR era the Teasers have managed to show flashes of greatness and then ultimately break our hearts. The Teases get a strong win here, go on a five game win streak there, and everyone gets excited. As excited as you can get with the occasional loss to Fresno State, or fcs opponent sprinkled in from year to year. At first I didn’t buy into Angry’s 9 game cap for MR. But facts don’t lie. This team is honestly just a cock tease. 9 wins is the maximum amount of wins to be irrelevant. Every single year, minus the shitty ones, the Teasers seem poised on the edge of greatness. Just one big win and perceptions would change. But the big win never came. And the funny part is, more often than not, a good portion of Teaser Nation is confident in that big win. Take the Stanford game; this year or last year for that matter, Teaser Nation was feeling a victory. Minimum quiet confident. The Beavs shit the bed both years. It’s what they do. It’s just what they doo. We poop in our pants. Just imagine if we would have won half of the ‘Big Games’ that were played during Riley’s tenure. The Beavers would have at the minimum gone to the Rose Bowl. Oregon State Teases I’m reminded of KGB’s in Rounders. “Just like a young man coming in for a quickie. I feel so unsatisfied.”

    • No career defining big wins when it matters plus the occassional really bad loss gets you about a 7-5 aggregate for Riley and given what we know about his contract that’s perfectly acceptable to those in power.

It’s frustrating as a fan, but I have an internal debate going on…..sure there’s a ceiling on Riley, but realistically is there a ceiling on the program also? For a program to matter almost every year, you have to be at 10 wins, right? Is there another AD and a HC who could make that happen for OSU consistently? I sort of have my doubts.

      • Riley is 8-7 at Oregon State. More precisely he is 87-70. But I don’t think the best answer is to fire Mike Riley. I think the best answer is to fire our AD and replace with one that won’t except mediocrity. An AD that insists on supplementing head coaching weaknesses with assistant coaches that can fill the gap in glaring deficiencies.

  8. MR served up a big steaming shit sandwich. He is in the elite category of lousy game coaches. Piss poor play calling and I believe the only adjustment in game he made was to chew his gum on the left side for the second half.

  9. I don’t understand why everybody is so disappointed, Beav fans always are quick to point out how bad UO’s schedule is yet you bought into this Heisman talk after winning 6 straight? Remember the SDSU game, that should have been a loss. Remember the Utah game, the winning pass in OT went right through both hands of the linebacker. Those could/should have been losses and those are not even remotely good teams. Granted easier said than done, but to stop OSU all you have to do is cover Cooks and keep an eye open for the screen pass on your way to the quarterback. I got blasted on here a few weeks ago for saying it doesn’t take much to rattle Mannion, he rightfully so was a little jumpy against Stanford but last night he didn’t get hit as much but was just as jumpy. Beav will beat UW but those games against ASU and UO are going to be ugly.

  10. On just about every play, offense or defense, two or three guys jog in and two to three jog off. By the time they get there, the play or defensive assignments are set in stone. Meanwhile, the opposition gets information on the field immediately and are able to make microadjustments to the Beaver tactics before the ball is snapped. On both the macro and micro level of adaptation and adjustment, the Beavers are behind. Stanford was a textbook case of being out thunk. USC was both better and smarter.

  11. Last night, on national TV, OSU regressed.

OSU Offense: The OSU offense depends heavily on good QB play, and Mannion played poorly last night — bad decisions, bad throws (three interceptions that easily could have been five). Mannion played particularly poorly in red zone situations, trying to force passes when he should have thrown the ball away (leading to two red zone interceptions, which were killers). Watching Mannion last night at Reser, he looked tentative — even skittish on occasion. Last night, Mannion regressed to the player who was relegated to 2d string status behind Vaz late last season. The bye week comes at a good time for Mannion. Mannion needs to take a deep breath, forget all the HeisMannion nonsense, get his act together and come back strong against ASU in a couple of weeks.

OSU Defense: Banker’s defense looked unprepared to stop USC’s run game, allowing Redd (140 yards rushing) and Allen (133 yards rushing) to pile up 273 yards, mostly on standard off-tackle and up-the-middle runs. Banker’s defense also blew coverages and got fooled on play-action fakes, leading to big plays by Marquise Lee (71 yard TD) and Nelson Agholor (62 yard catch). I assume Banker will blame it on “poor execution” or on “missing players” (DJ Alexander, Michael Doctor). Banker’s defense did a decent job against Stanford, but last night we regressed. This was another lousy coaching job by Banker (one of many, over the course of many years).

And we won’t even talk about Riley’s incompetent clock management, which has truly become an embarrassment. OSU needs an intervention here — Riley has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he can’t handle this properly.

Put it all together (bad QB play, bad defense, bad clock management), throw in some bad PR (chainsaw video) and mark it up as another failure on a big stage (ESPN2) for OSU football. It doesn’t have to be this way. But OSU will be stuck in this rut until Bob DeCareless moves on. Sooner the better (but I’m not holding my breath….)

  12. I have decided to do a total and complete boycott of OSU Athletics except for baseball. I firmly believe 7-10 more years of Riley is not only noy best for OSU but is actually very bad gir OSU as a bunch more 6-6 seasons under him will gave support going way down and splinter what remains of the base. We know we aren’t doing better than a Sun Bowl win no matter the years wasted. Soon Riley’s counterpart Bellotti will have handed over the reigns almost a decade ago.

We are stale to recruits and our Jerry Kill AD is the worst in the nation. Bolden will be nowhere near the threat of Cooks and he is our main weapon Riley has after Cooks is gone. There us a pretty high level of frustrated fans out there who are rapidly growing tired of being force fed BDC and Riley and Riley’s coordinators and OL coach. Stanford with the Rose Bowl driver’s seat in play had poor turnout because Riley always disappoints in these games. 20k showed their disgust by leaving early.

USC is usually an easy sellout but with new orange unis they stilll fell short and with poor effort and execution Riley probably lost several thousand more supporters and continually is showing possible recruits on ESPN that we struggle and have problems.

I think there is coaching talent out there and as part of the Pac-12 we are a good job and would generate interest and some qualified candidates. Would much rather do that and have fun making Vegas or Sun Bowls with new blood then have it feel like the most stale situation ever. And we don’t have to reward the next guy for 6-6 all the time so that we are stuck so long. BDC is a jackass for that contract as Riley is now has a win % of only .558. I am through with this being rewarded as solid and I expect thousands of others are too and more will follow as OSU piles up losses to finish out the year. Then Schnell can write an article next year about how Riley teams improve and more remnant fans will call bullshit.

    • First off, well said.

But, I don’t see how boycotting athletics except baseball will help. Without Football and men’s basketball, there IS no baseball team. The opposite needs to be done the way I see it. Fan indifference/fair weather support + no apparent expectations from the AD = a big shit sandwich and we are all gonna have to eat it unless there is a collective call for something better. Change. Sucks to admit but it looks like again, the good teams will kick our oversized teeth in. Why is that not surprising?

The one point you nailed is the recruiting. It’s going to be impossible to expect a good class. Maybe some decent young men who were able to be talked into OSU, but not future NFL mashers like we NEED to have in order to actually compete for once. My biggest fear is we are in a perpetual recruiting abyss. Sure we occasionally get a Pac12 caliber player, but too many times we are taking shitty division 2(/3/9???) talent and trying to “coach them up.” You can’t polish a turd, and there is a massive steaming pile of turds on this team. I’m not saying Riles and Banke havent spent countless hours honestly trying though.

Don’t even get me started on basketball, we are completely F’d there. F’ing COMPLETELY F’d. A recruiting abyss would be a step up for coach Robinson. Meanwhile, the ENTIRE PAC12 has improved personnel and/or coaching and/or both. Robinson is still stuck on the fact that Cunningham left for the NBA two years ago and because of that has done nothing in 6 recruiting cycles since! Roe-bwear-toe is going to set the record for most attempts to pump fake defenders into fouls. Other than that, we have no identity what so ever, except for being the 12th ranked team in a 12 team league. Hmmmmm Wonder why we can’t get anyone good????

      GOD DAMN IT!!!!

  13. It doesn’t matter how good your coach is if you are getting dominated in the trenches like the Beavers were last night. The bottom line is the Beavers need more talent. Now if you are blaming a lack of talent on the coaching staff that is perfectly valid.

    • Agree. Apparently, if the Beavs had a different coach, they would be going undefeated this season. I’m saying this because after every loss, people in here attribute the loss almost 100% on the coaches. Sometimes you just lose to better teams.

      • Yes, losing to a better team does happen. USC was NOT a better team. Leaving timeouts on the board as the clock runs out while on an offensive drive (alamo bowl). Abandoning the run against USC last night after it was working…calling pass olays for each down before half, lwading to a USC offensive series (when we could have ran and run the clock down) LOSING TO FCS SCHOOLS. These are indicators of inexcusably stupid coaching decisions.

Let me know if I’m being to hard on Mike I mean what, he’s only being paid seven figures a year right?

        • Who are the better teams left on the schedule, then? Because if we lose to them, guaranteed that there will be several people posting in here with their only response being that Riley needs to be fired.

          • The ducks are certainly one of them, as much as we all hate to admit it. I have found the posts in here for riley or certain select staffs dismissal is based on solid observations from game time coaching decisions as I gave a brief description of in my previous post. His play calling can go absolutley flat, he is horrendous at managing the clock almost every game, and the general handling of the team before games is causing some head scratching. I dont see alot of posts on here calling for a firing simply because we lost to a better team. Its from a blatent display of incompetance, particularly in big game situations

  14. Read your blog for a couple years now angry. Last nights loss has finally caused me to register with the blog. BDC has got to go. It’s not just our coaching, it’s the entire atmosphere, which the AD should be held accountable for.

The band leaves their place before half. Our team was left on the field during an offensive series with the USC band belting it out in the background. Furthermore, the band has a very small presence at all times. Amplify the sound, make em play loyder, idont give a shit figure it out.
Our cheerleaders don’t hold a candle to UO’s
I don’t give a shit about a poor performing womens basketball team, so don’t remind me of it on the big screen at anytime…show me a video of a team that knows success, baseball.
The rebrand has been ok, but missed the mark. It is an improvement but Beaver Nation WANTED old school. Play off of the hollow insitution that is UO and and their flashy bullshit and differentiate us in just anothrr avenue. Instead we go and try to make it new as well but just don’t pull it off. Uniforms from the civil war a few years back were spot on. BDC did not take appropriate action to guage the opinions of alumni or the current student body which is absolutley ridiculous.
IF A MAJORITY OF YOUR TEAMS ARE LOSERS, THE A.D. SHOULD PROBABLY BE FIRED, JUST SAYIN’ ED RAY.
The fireworks after touchdowns are backed up by a fake squeeky sound over thr speakers. Real intimidating.
No coordination to get the tailgaters rocking. Oh but some choir stopped by and sang a tear jerking rendition of the fight song. Look, I appreciate you can sing guys, but a tailgator for gameday is not the place for a CHOIR.
Cute “plaid” padding on the field goals. An slight attemot at old school probably thrown at the ath. Dept. by some room temp IQ fashion design major. We look like total dorks.
Oh and leave the rap theme song bs to either a) UO thugs or b) OSU basball teams that have won a national championship (ostate ballerz). Crank it like a chainsaw is NOT even getting a majority of the student body involved, and frankly we’ll usually make noise for anything.

I know this is kind of an unstructured rant, but bottom line is BDC is a joke, and he allows jokers to continue in their emplyment at OSU. I love goin to gameday, but its becuase of thr great friends and atmosphere we develop on our own. I can’t name ONE THING OSU is doing to take the crowd or team to the next level.

I will not be buying tickets, or donating $ to the university after graduation until I see a change. At this point, that might even mean Ed Ray has to go. But that’s a whole other rant for an entire other blog.

  15. Sorry about the grammatical errors…using my fat fingers on a phone in a practical fit of anger after thinking about my attendance at last night’s game. Let me know if there is anything someone in the current student body can do to ruffle some feathers haha.

One last jab, Mike was immediatley a joke to me years ago with all the gum chewing. It’s not proffesional. My rant may seem nitpicky, but they are all indicators of uncoordinated, mediocre employees. Walk like a duck, talk like a duck, perform like a duc,…you are probably a f#&king duck.
