Not much interesting going on. The upcoming bowl game might be entertaining, but that’s about it. The storyline there is whether Riley can avoid another losing season. Maybe seeing some younger players (e.g. Saulo, if he excites you).

Schnell implies all is well in the world because the Beavs are playing in “paradise” (is this a bowl game or a  vacation?)… click for more Schnell puffery

I do think the Beavs are better than BSU and will win this game, but man, that article sounds like all pleasure, no business, so maybe not.

Anyway, general discussion. Anything you wish.

  1. The recruiting class seems to be nearing an end. Pretty early this time around. I think only a few spots are still open. Nothing exciting about this class but the low end of the class doesn’t contain too many projects which is nice. A few more OL and at DT and this class is done.

Obviously the big get is Zach Kline. Lots of talent, we’ll see if he can put it together.

    • A full class is around 25 recruits, but we are under the scholarship limit right now by at least half-dozen (I don’t have the exact count). Plus, there is attrition every year (retirements, transfers, grades, greyshirts, etc) I would think they could add 10 more, but who knows with this staff.

Also, there are a couple of commits that could get poached. Although most other programs probably have very little interest in our list.

    • I heard through the grapevine (I’m personally too cheap to pay for the pay sites) we are still in on some big offensive line recruits. I believe McGary (4*) has us and Washington as his final two. Also that Hedlin has us in his final three. Beaverkman probably knows more about these guys.

      http://rivals.yahoo.com/oregonstate/football/recruiting/player-Kaleb-McGary-140376

      http://rivals.yahoo.com/oregonstate/football/recruiting/player-David-Hedelin-148209

      Pretty impressive offer sheets.

      • McGary is nice prospect and he does have us high on his list. He was he here during the UW game though. He did cross UO off his list. I don’t see us getting him, but we have a better shot since the coaching change up North.

Hedelin since he didn’t commit on his trip, I wonder where we are with him. Seems like he is shopping around for something better.

Some other OL prospects would be Kolton Miller who liked his trip here, but was offered by Ucla this week and I think when that happens we will finish behind them. Kammy Delp also is highly recruited and he is a good prospect as well, he does have OV setup for January.

As these prospects start falling off the board I could see more teams be interested in commit Drew Clarkson Camas, WA. I think we are solid with him, but I could see teams making a late push at him as well.

        • The date to look for big signs is the weekend of Jan 11th/12th.

That’s the weekend I think the coaches are targeting to bring in all the commits and anyone on the fence. In the past they always brought all the commits on official visits together when there is a basketball game. It is the only weekend in Jan with a Sat basketball game. So any undecideds that come that weekend will be ones to watch and will hopefully solidify any guys looking around.

    • What about the LB from Central Catholic? The 6’4″ cornerback from Bakersfield (Hayes)? And the LB from Mission Hills, Rickey Liuchan? These guys are good players……

  2. Doing it on a budget, sounds about right for OSU. 300 out of 2000 tickets is horrible, why are we doing this? Its a vacation for everybody. I don’t expect much of an effort.

Can we trim down the bowl schedule? There are 35 games and maybe 6 games that actually look entertaining to watch. They could leave a dozen off the schedule and there would be better matchups and more entertaining.

    • concur. And the place to start is those bowls owned, operated, and manipulated by ESPN (including the one the Beavs happen to be in). The NCAA ought to pass a rule that a bowl game has to have local, non-profit support or it is eliminated. What hypocrites those guys at ESPN are. They established the drum beat for a playoff system, all the while talking about meaningless bowl games (1/4 of which they own); all to fill their stupid holiday sporting schedule. And oh, by the way, ESPN will be at the front of the line pushing for the expansion of the CFB playoff.

    • Look at this, she calls Storm Woods “Stormy”. I just can’t take her crap seriously. I wonder which player’s hotel room she’s hoping to sleep in tonight?

      ??? Storm ?@Storm34thetruth 57m
      @LindsayRae19 that’s a great story on b

      Lindsay Schnell ?@LindsayRae19 47m
@Storm34thetruth Thx Stormy! If I have the BFF’s approval I must have done something right.

  3. It’s a puffy piece because they haven’t practiced yet and Schnell’s excited to be there. I’m not worried about the team being focused come game time.

  4. Utah added Dave Christensen as OC, moving Erickson to RB’s and Brian Johnson to WR’s. They now have 5 coaches with OC experience on their staff.

    • Strange choice if he wants to play WR first…I think Helfrich will throw downfield more, but it seems like the kid could maximize his NCAA and potential NFL value in the secondary and as a ST return man? I know he’s been playing S, but at 178 lbs, he’s too light and if he’s athletic enough to play CB particularly at 5’11” – it could put him into a more elite status(?).

  5. I hope both teams show up focused and ready to play, but it seems unlikely.

The worst outcome would be for both to be unfocused, play a poor, sloppy game, and OSU to win under those circumstances…Riley gets a “W,” talks about how it nice it is to finish with a win, “this is something to build on…” etc. and BDC is happy with 7-6.

Be nice if Cooks had a big day, and Ward continued his CW production and scored a few TDs in his finale.

    300 tickets….imagine if they’d been in Shreveport.

    • You’ve gotta think a trip to Shreveport woild have netted ticket sales of less than 100, if Hawaii is only at 300. And how many of that 300 is friends and family anyway. I read that the coaches brought their families to Hawaii on the teams flight, and I’ve seen a few pictures of athletes with their families there too. BeaverNation is planning to enjoy xmas eve from the comfort of their homes this year.

      • in a way it’s too bad the Beavs ended up in Hawaii because BDC would be able to tout the expense, short turn-around etc. as the reason for low ticket sales. (predictably, Lindsay is already doing that groundwork for him.) Concur with Beavblazer that Shreveport would have netted around 100 sales; New Mexico Bowl would have gotten around 300-400, about 10% of what the Cougs did. I’ve been saying all along that bowl game tix sales will be the first indicator of how the bottom has fallen out of donor/ticketholder market, and season renewal sales will be next; marked drop off I predict; something on the order of 25%

          • I think the one thing we’ve learned is that when you most expect something good to happen with Beaver football (even something as prosaic as showing some heart in a game vs. a regional rival, like UW) Riley-led teams will inevitably disappoint. This is not to say that sometimes they don’t surprise us in a positive way, but again, that’s when expectations are very low; like the SC games
at home last decade. Ergo, a team that should have a lot to prove, against a team which lost its coach, more games in one year than the last 4 combined, with their QB at home, all points to an OSU victory. Which equals high expectations, which means . . . .

    • UPDATE: As mentioned by several CGB members, it is likely Kline and Tagaloa will sidestep Dykes’s approval by going to a JC for a year and then head to whatever school they please unencumbered. For more on Pac-12 transfer rules, click here.

  6. I think you have to consider that a young “journalist” like Schnell is thrilled to have someone accessible and nice like Riley as part of her beat. Maybe the Beavs will eventually get an asshole who can coach and then we will see how puffy the pieces are! The local media in Eugene hated Chipster and he could have cared less.

  7. Off Topic of OSU or Football

I meant to post this earlier when music was brought up. I think you guys were talking about Bad Religion or one of those bands. A really good music documentary I watched a few months back called “The other F Word” did this great follow up on Punk bands out of California (and really all over the country) and it shows how some deal with the lifestyle 20 years later while maintaining the lifestyle of touring, family, partying, etc.

It wasn’t what I expected and the main focal piece of the documentary was on Pennywise’s front man – but it has great interview pieces with everyone involved. Ultimately, trying to maintain the image and nihilistic party lifestyle works for some ot these guys, but not all of them – I found it entertaining and definitely a good watch if you have the time.

Another great music documentary out there is “cross fire hurricane” and as you can guess, is focused on the Stones.

If anyone has any other recommendations (or cares..haha) for worthwhile music documentaries, I am open to suggestion as well. All Genre’s welcome.

    • Nice I’ll have to check that one out. I would imagine they had some NOFX footage in there. I like Pennywise though, really aggressive guitar tone, not really my style but they sound good. Fuck Authority is great. Perfect People is too.

I’ll go ahead and reveal my age here…you’ve seen Another State of Mind and Decline of a Western Civilization haven’t you?

Another State of Mind literally changed my life when I was a young skater punk. I’m still a huge Social Distortion , Minor Threat and Youth Brigade fan. I saw that documentary on public broadcasting when I was in middle school and it blew my fuckin mind. We’re talking mid-80s here? :)

  8. Bronco QB’s suspended from first practice in Hawaii. If Southwick is kept out of the bowl that leaves the more mobile Grant Hedrick to test the Beavs. Doubt an interim coach will bench Southwick unless a very very serious infraction occurred, news conference coming up shortly.

    http://blogs.idahostatesman.com/boise-state-football-youngsters-do-their-workout-on-the-beach-photos/

BTW, Lindsay’s tweet below doesn’t mention that the suspended players included the expected STARTING QB…….another example of our gal being on some other wavelength!

“This press conf was all set to be boring, but then 2 Boise State players got in trouble last night, so this got a whole lot more interesting”

  9. Come on….. anyone really expect Riley to have much of anything for answers to real questions?? It would be just genetic replies if you even got a reply on subject

Seems to me Riley will go at next season with the same cruise control attitude as recent years.

So Lindsay is probably the perfect beat “reporter”.

Didnt we lose our first post 28 year losing string bowl game in Hawaii, because of team lack of prep, ….though I recall that was Erickson? Probably hard to get players to focus on a meaningless bowl in Hawaii, and way too much to ask of Mr Vanilla, Mike Riley. He cant get the players to be ready for games at home, nowdays. But maybe BSU will be even more relaxed. I cant really work up giving a shit..

    • That bowl game was not one of DE’s finer moments as an OSU coach. Very mediocore Hawaii team who I believe had just lost to a terrible Wazzu team before the bowl game. Al least, he made up for it the following season.

  10. NEWS ALERT: Bronco QB Southwick sent home, career at BSU is over.

UPDATE: Boise State senior quarterback Joe Southwick has been sent home from the Hawaii Bowl for a violation of team rules, ending his career with the Broncos, interim coach Bob Gregory announced late Friday afternoon in Honolulu.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Patti has been reinstated and will return to practice Saturday. Patti will be allowed to play in the game.

    Read more here: http://blogs.idahostatesman.com/boise-state-football-youngsters-do-their-workout-on-the-beach-photos/#storylink=cpy

    • My cynical self says that there was no way they were going to send both QBs home and leave no back up for the game. I just glad Eric Moreland wasn’t involved with them considering that his chillin’ on the island too.

  11. stupid twunt can’t even get her facts correct.

This means the Broncos’ starting quarterback for the Dec. 24 Hawaii will be Grant Hedrick, a graduate of Independence High in Central, Ore. Hedrick took over this season after Southwick broke his ankle on Oct. 19, and the junio completed 135-of-198 passes for 1,443 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also threw five interceptions.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/12/hawaii_bowl_boise_state_tries.html#incart_river_default

Where the fuck is Central, Oregon fatty? It’s Central HS in Independence, Oregon

  12. Biletnikoff Award winner Brandin Cooks, he of the FBS-best 1,670 yards and 15 TDs, will be kept out of the end zone by Boise State in the Hawaii Bowl. It’s already happened to the Oregon State WR three times, including in two of the last three games.

  13. I see Kalani Vakameilalo has changed his verbal to the Beavs to “soft” after visiting WSU.

Also, another player (Hercules Mata’afa) the Beavs are after has committed to WSU.

Thus a question for recruiting wonks.

I realize it’s still early but I’m wondering if it’s looking like Mike Leach & staff are out recruiting MR and his staff?

Of course we won’t know until the ink is dry on the paper but getting an idea of how things are going is of interest.

    • I think when it is all said and done that osu will finish behind all the pac12 teams with the exception of Colorado. Leach has done a decent job of recruiting. They have had their share of wins and losses, however they seem to not go after too many high profile players.

There is a definite separation of teams in the Pac12. Az schools, la schools, Uo and Stanford. Normally you would put Cal and UW in that group, but with the recent coaching changes they would be a step below. Then you have Utah, Wazzu, Colorado and us fighting for the last spots.

  14. no way of knowing what Leach & co are promising but Leach is interesting – MR is just nice. I’ve noted a time or two as well that Mike Leach heartily embraces the Washington State and Pullman location as a draw not a detriment.

Enuf of this – 21 people for Christmas dinner and I need to get a move on – Happy Holidays everyone.

  15. Was glad to hear OSU is mixing up the look for the Alamo Bowl. Would like to see atleast 8 combos seen next year. Had planned on writing an article but because I did not want to write puffery during the lising streak I am no longer editor at Beaver Byte. Likes of BDC and schnell gappy with mediocrity and at times worse carry the day for now. Angrybeavs shares the critical philosophy that properly analyzes the issues and shortcomings of our AD and major sports minus baseball and am proud to call it home.

I promised I would share some thoughts on the combos I would like to see next year in a tweet last night so here goes. I helive the max effect of combos will occur if all 3 helmets are used both home and away. This is because there are some great and classic looks that can be included if so.

    Top 8 looks to use:

    1) White helmets, Black rest (Honor those like JJ Young for atleast one game a year with this combo which feels like OSU & has a touch of the nautical to it.)

    2) Black lids and pants with orange jersey. (Preference for a September game is this look which is classic OSU colors to start the season & not too hot or the Creamsicle look that swaps in the white pants. In theory look allowed both home and away)

    3) Orange lids and pants with black tops. This would be a good bowl game, Stanford, USC at home or Civil War game look that I have heard recent craving to see used. Should be slick.

    4) Black lids, white rest. (Honor the recent generation like Wheaton and Poyer by using this look on the road atleast once)

    5) All blacks. (Sounds good but the current version is missing something. Would like Nike to strengthen the deltoid on the sleeves some. The base should be a tad wider as when it just looks like a curved stripe and not a deltoid it does not seem as strong as it could. Tons of schools also went matte black last year. Maybe they could stand to go semi-gloss. Not having logos on the black is OK at times but has downsides. Makes it so white helmet has to be shown to broadly reveal the brand. Maybe an additional black helmet with logos to be mixed in could be considered. If white helmet gets used at hone some than less critical and can probably get by as is.)

    6) All whites. (Maybe the most successful look this season. However for it to be our only road combo is unacceptable. Logo wirks on this look as does the Oregon State across the chest and orange stripes.)

    7) All orange (The look is 0-2 but the CW warmed it up some. A worghy orange look but will get boring if only one. Mix in with the black lids and pants and other orange combos and when we do see this it will be even better as will all the looks.)

    8) Giant Killers (The white pants with black rest look we will see in the Aliha Bowl. I would be fine if they snuck in the sail pants for a special game using this look that we should still have from the 2010 Civil War. In fact that whole uniform could be used in addition to a post rebrand Giant Killer combo.)

These are the Top 8 I want to see in atleast a game each nect year. #9 would definitely be white jerseys with black pants and lids which honors the Fiesta Bowl team. Creamsicle look would be #10 as it can be used home or away. #11 would be orange bodies white lids and #12 maybe orange lids and pants with white jerseys for one more road option.

In theory there are 27 combos from 3 jerseys, pants and helmets. Possible marketing would be a computer generated fridge nagnet that showed all 27 and committing to using them all over 5 years. It could be magic marker wipeable with a little chechbox to mark if seen that year. Could have a fan contest for person who picks closest to the combos actually used and when. Let the players pick week by week and maybe don’t use any one look more than twice a year so we see 8 or 9.

The black ones were just a little off anf got a little tamer than desired this year and OSU had a few flat games in them. The whites worked but need a little more mixup options for the road too. Orange were nice helmets and all orange was OK but too much only orange to be our only major orange use. By mixibg it up and giving the players control ut is a positive development that BDC is willing to loosen up and allow the mixup many fans and players want to see that will generate more fan interest week to week. If we see atleast 8 looks and more fans are drawn and recruiting edges up a little it will help enthusiasm to prep for Reser Phase 3 and may just help OSU turn a corner to improvement as the competition in the Pac-12 continues to stiffen.

    • Hey OS_Beaver ! New to this site but have been a loyal follower of your previous site for quite awhile. Was wondering what had happened there; thought perhaps you were just DONE with Smiley and BDC and gave it up. Anyways, glad to know you are still out there.

As for the uniform combinations, I am all for mixing and matching. To me, the obvious missing element is a gun metal grey color entry (yes, I am blatantly stealing some of the looks that OK ST uses). That helmet and uni combo would, in my opinion, complete the look. Perhaps even a ‘mirrored’ type of helmet (see UW and their new gold helmet)??

I am sure BDC will be ready to take this to another level somewhere around 2038, or about the time the VFC and West grandstand gets done…

  16. The way I look at it, as a Beav fan, is that the Cougs always provide us a Quantum of Solace, so to speak, in that we know there is a floor under OSU’s program–we can count on them for lower football IQ than we display. And hey, Lindsay, there’s a coach who might come to Corvallis, McIvaine; late of E. WA. Had a team prepared to play, and didn’t flinch. Huard couldn’t have been more effusive in his praise of him.

  17. Gad I feel for the Coug fans. What a major screw up that was. And as Beavergopher mentioned, that’s a black eye for the Pac-12, probably even worse than the Beavs opening loss this year. If nothing else, more people saw this game than the Beavs.

Except for a few teams, no wonder the Pac-12 gets no respect.

    • I don’t think these lower bowls affect the PAC-12’s legitimacy. It’s really the BCS bowls that bring our conference any street cred

  18. It was a great game if you were rooting for CSU. Incredible comeback to win it as time expired after the Cougs were dickheads all game… very nice indeed!

    • Imo one of the CSU coaches behaved in an unprofessional manner and one of the CSU players (the center) should have been ejected for taking a cheap shot and seriously injuring a WSU player.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, eh?

      • Unprofessional manner? Would that be like locking a student in an equipment shed or punishing the best receiver in school history for a nebulous perception of his desire to compete? In sports entertainment, as long as you win, almost anything is acceptable. It is only unprofessional if you lose.

  19. a fucking bowl full of potatoes for a trophy. Wow. SDSU will get to take that home with them and put it in their trophy case. I know what I’d do with it.

  20. Damien Haskins, stout (5’8″ 223lbs) and fast….and not tackled in practice:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/12/oregon_state_football_to_prepa.html

    OSU prepares for BSU’s RB by – that’s right – not tackling….

“Over the past week, Wynn and others have tried to sharpen fundamentals — without actually tackling, of course — against Haskins. They’ve focused on swarming the ball, a foundational part of any OSU defense. “

    • Hahaha that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in quite a while. Funny how they refer to getting buttfucked by quality run games 6 games in a row as some kind of fluke.
