Beavs 65th Best Football Program Ever

I’m sure that sounds impressive, until you realize it’s not.

Full list here.

They are dead last in the Pac, including the addition of Utah. Something has to change and fast.

  1. Oregon at 28 about to become a top 25 all time program. Sigh.

Colorado historically good (27th on the list and 25th all times in wins). They’re a bit of a sleeping giant. I think they can be better than Utah over the long-term.

  2. Given those 28 straight losing seasons, contributing to a .484 all-time record, this sounds like a reasonable ranking to me. What’s their justification for Wazzu being much higher (59) though? They have a .488 all-time record with no Heisman winners, same amount of Rose Bowl wins, and no BCS wins.

Sounds like once they reached 40 the list became muddled with mediocre parity.

    • They give the methodology in the 2nd paragraph:

To determine the all-time Top 25, the AP formula counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (two points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for AP championships (10 points).

That’s not a great methodology, imo, because a NC isn’t worth 9 points more than the team they beat (#2 team).

      • Using that methodology, AP championship and No 1 ranking is 11 total points vs 1 point for #2-25.
So you can be #2 for 10 years and still not catch a team that has one good season. And if number 25 did the Same as number 2 then they are still viewed as equals. Hmmm. Yeah, not great methodology.

        • Exactly. That’s one reason it’s poor. There are others.

But, the end result is fairly close to how people would rank teams. So, we have the “fallacy fallacy” where bad logic doesn’t necessarily mean the outcome is wrong.

  3. Arbitrary list, is arbitrary. I’m not doubting their conclusion. But it was as recent as the mid 90’s that there could be more than 1 claimed NC by the fact that men voted and computers weren’t involved.

  4. Last in the Pac is unsurprising given 28 year losing streak. ASU at #30 surprised me.

Teams like ND benefit from bias resulting from disparate, inequitable media coverage in the earlier decades of the poll system. Hell, people talk about the lack of west coast exposure due to late games now, imagine the media coverage from the 30s-70’s. LA market schools USC and UCLA had their best years in the 70’s and 80s, and the only other top 25 Pac school was UW (Seattle a relatively large market, at least large enough to support NFL, NBA, MLB).

SEC teams started having their best years in the 90s, and they remain highly ranked due to media deals and bias. Another interesting perspective on this topic would be based somehow on media markets and changes in broadcasting over time.

I hate to say it, but Beavs still need to establish and maintain a program identity. The loser label and Mediocre Mike era aren’t enough. I hope Andersen can recruit QBs and that he sticks around long enough to meaningfully improve the program.

    • The AP only listed a top ten for the one decade we were a familiar top 15 team. And I think the top 25 was only 20 until USA Today came out in the 80’s with their 25 and forced the AP and Coaches to do the same. And polls are garbage until the third or fourth week anyway.

Those wouldn’t move the needle much, but they would move it in a positive direction for us.

I don’t know that I really care any more given how the game has changed in the last two decades. I think it’s a dying sport because of its current financial successes.

  5. OT: Media Day
Gadget Times up with a story on today’s media day; Gina will follow tomorrow. Not a lot of info to be gained by such an early player availability, noteworthy is that Harlow may redshirt.

Meanwhile, anyone want to opine on the vibe from this report in the O? Who is the best video player on the squad?…..a little gimmicky but passes the time. Garretson seems relaxed and comfortable (we’ll see how long that lasts when facing an aggressive D line), and Nall is rooming with Demo… and has a good handle on the Greek name. I like that Andersen is mixing guys up when assigning roommates, the whole trip to Bend thing seems worthwhile on several levels.

      • Eggers has a media day recap and says if Harlow can’t go, Yanni will likely be the center.

Looks like somebody will be tickling Yanni’s ivories for a change, rather than the other way around.

        • I hope a quick/good decision is made on who’ll start at Center, Eggers even reports Gavin Andrews is in the mix.
“Woods says center will be a battle between sophomore Yanni Demogerontas and senior Gavin Andrews”

          • I would contend the knee problems stemmed from him trying to play tackle instead of using that trunk power to just grade roads.

          • I’d rather see Yanni, as a sophomore, take over the Center position, and develop in that position over the next few years, rather than move Andrews over as a senior and basically be a Rent-a-Center. We’ll be back at square 1again next year if we go the Andrews route.

  6. OT, I have some game video of Garretson running the offense from the 2015 Spring Game if anybody cares to see it. Maybe I can load it to youtube after work today, if there’s interest. It’s just a handful of series but at least its more recent than his Utah St days

  7. Looks like this new rule is aimed at the ducks and a couple other teams who do this crap.

    Scrimmage Kick Formation

Punts and field goal attempts are classified as scrimmage kicks, because they are made as part of a play from scrimmage. The rules for scrimmage plays require the offense to have at least five linemen wearing jerseys numbered between 50 and 79. However, if a team is in a scrimmage kick formation, they may replace some of those players by linemen wearing numbers outside the 50-79 range; these typically are “speed players,” backs who are faster than the larger linemen and can get downfield faster to cover the kick.

Because some teams were beginning to “game” the rules by running or passing the ball from this formation, the rules committee felt that it needed to tighten the requirements. Under the new rules, a scrimmage kick formation must have a player at least 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage (the likely punter) OR a potential kicker and potential holder at least seven yards deep. Another important part of the rule is that “it must be obvious that a kick will be attempted.”

Just watched the interviews from Media Day. Seth Collins looks like different guy. I was mildly impressed at the change from last year. But, I’m something of a push-over…

  9. I never did see the civil war from last year until tonight. Found a link to a 60 minute version on youtube. Gets me a little chubby for the upcoming season. With Garretson in that game manager role that McMaryion played, while Nall, Collins, Lucas and the receiving corp move the ball around, we could have a pretty entertaining season offensively.

  10. Rodent Bowl 4 weeks from today.
If anybody is coming out to the Twin Cities, be advised that there is going to be a traffic snarl of biblical proportions that afternoon/ evening. In addition to the normal rush hour, there will be a Twins game, a Vikings game at the new stadium, and the State Fair happening all at the same time. The fair draws an average of 200-220k per day. The freeway system works pretty well here, but this will be a serious overload. Go Rodents!

    • Remember, you promised to wear orange and root for the proper team this year. Next year you can wear your barf brown and yellow in Corvallis and root for the losers.

    • Knew about the state fair. Didn’t realize there were MLB and NFL games going on as well. Traffic concerns me less than the parking situation.

      • The fair impacts some of the parking and tailgating. Normally there is a pretty big contingent in the lots at the fair ground adjacent to the St. Paul campus and they run a bus shuttle. Your best bet for parking will probably be the river flats area. I would avoid the ramps if possible. They are a nightmare to get out of. Do not park on the streets. They are vicious with the enforcement of the meters and you will get towed. As it gets close to game day there will be parking passes for sale on Stubhub. There is always a fair amount of folks who blow off the first game and go up north to their lake cabins.

  11. Where did I miss that Christian Wallace never showed up on campus? That is what I am hearing and I want to know if this is something I just missed hearing about or maybe it’s a new development.

  12. Funny everyone here seems to have an opinion on what’s wrong but nobody offers any suggestions on how to fix ANYTHING.

This is an ocean liner full of problems men, going to need a few good bilge pumps and some sturdy buckets to start digging our way out.

Andersen is just the type of rugged skipper to stay the course and brave any storm. We can really launch and christen a new era if we can find a way to get a proverbial message in a bottle to the area’s top talent.

While the seas of the pac12 will be stormy and nobody should expect smooth sailing, my money says Andersen and co will batton down the hatches and navigate the BEAVER NATION ship through the mighty squalls and safely into bowl eligible waters.
