In response to my: “The real fans get another kick in the nuts season”

This birdbrain replies:

LOL…are you seriously calling yourself a “real” fan? Bwhahahahahahahahaahahahahaha

You’re about as far from a “real” fan as it gets bud! –BeavInEugene

Isn’t it incredible that six years into this blog people still mistake criticism (and desire for improvement) with hatred?

Yes, Birdbrain, I am not a fan. I just spend personal resources (both time and money) to run this site because I have nothing better to do. No Birdbrain, it is all just a big conspiracy to ruin Oregon State. I’m a Duck with a ten year plan! Now go back inside the earth, bunker-dweller.

Hey, angry…..I agree BinE is a dildo, but he’s probably just an extreme form of Polyanna. That is, if you dont root for the team, completely and unequivocally, … win, lose or get blown out…. and even if the team and staff are ludicrously bad, …..well, you are not a true fan.

If BinE were a german before WW2 he would have been a total nazi…..totally behind the home team, so to speak, no matter what they did.

I guess these “true fans” are the sheep of the population, and simply are unable to think for themselves. If they COULD think, I would suggest to them that they are the worst fans, and care nothing for quality. But they cant….

However, I wouldn’t say there is a “worst” type of fan. I would say that some types do more harm than good because they rely on faith rather than objectively seeing reality and act accordingly. But if the heart is in the right place they’re still “good” fans.

There is a difference between a Polyanna who just plain loves his team, win, lose, thick or thin……and the one who hates another fan because they want something better and tries to ferret out ways that might happen. Couldnt worst apply to the latter? There is surely a fan spectrum, overseen by that Great Beaver in the Sky, so given that spectrum, there has to be a “worst”…..

I wouldnt guess that anything is certain about next year. Seems to me that BDC skirted around any real decision. And who knows, CR might apply himself, the new players might blossom, pigs might fly and the Beavers hoops make some improvement. If that happened, I bet our BDC would keep him. And with some millions of $ in that contract, he might anyway.

Not much new in the spring ball story lines but wondering what people think of this remark from Riley:

“With good health and the addition of the three transfers on defense, Riley envisions a team that will have as much or more depth as any of his 13 teams at Oregon State.

“Besides a couple of spots, we probably have the best depth ever,” he says. “And we might look OK in the offensive line by the time we start camp, too.”

Noticed Woods and Ward are expected to get light work Saturday and that Brown (who missed Mondays practice) will get most of the work…along with Haskins.

It’s gonna be interesting watching how the RB group, which Riley says is the strongest (deepest?) on O, shakes out. Hope Garrett can break Riley’s tendency to simply go with the guy with the most seniority. Of course, that could be somewhat muted if Woods cannot stay healthy.

In discussing the O-line, Riley says he’ll configure it to play “the best five.”

One more thought on the link: Was even 25% of this reported by the kids at the O? Eggers is caught up with the Blazers and still has time/ability to produce this article along with the one on Casey’s 700th win. Imagine what we might learn if Eggers beat was only the Beavs.

Was he calling anyone out on this site? Reading the context, any fan with hopes of greatness (or even just a low bar like goodness) for their team which are unrealized is a fan who gets a kick in the nuts. It happens every year, yet we all come marching back in August. Some of us question authority because of authority’s track record while others have blind faith.

Casual and bandwagon fans are the only ones not kicked. So maybe they’re being called out in your argument. But you’re close to conflating apples and oranges there.

The likely line up is RT Andrews, RG Bays C Seumalo LG Mitchell LT Harlow. Or C Mitchell, LG Harlow and LT Seumalo.

Not bad at all. All but Andrews has started multiple games. Depth is a bit of an issue. Sapolu will never be an effective starter. Weinrich has been injured all the time and the rest are still in development.

If somehow, any of the guys trying out at LT work out, then the line is better with Isaac making the calls. It doesn’t look like any of the incoming freshman will compete for playing time.

I agree. I think a healthy combination of Seumalo, Mitchell, Andrews, Harlow, and Bays would be as good or better than any line we’ve had for awhile now. I suppose it could be a blessing in disguise that Seumalo and Mitchell (as they are likely the two best of the group anyways) sat out spring practice to get their health issues in order if it means some of the less experienced guys get a lot of meaningful reps in practice. It’d be great if 2-3 of the guys getting the exta time could develop into “playable” guys and add some real depth to the line for the upcoming season.

It just sounds like LT – Mannion’s blind side – is weak. There’s a JC transfer whom Riley has essentially said is disappointing, and a few projects. i thought at this point, with the OLine “recruiting haul” a few years back, that things would be more stable and predictable up front. Maybe I am misreading it, and its purely an injury thing that could sort itself out by fall camp.

There is more depth on the o line now than in the past five or six years. Depth in this case does not imply quality. Yet there is competition, and a real feeling that more than 5 guys will play in a game. Also, this year they talk about technique instead of bear crawls. I really like them giving the three left tackles a taste of success and then demoting them so that they must earn a spot in the pecking order.I just hope that the o live picture of Hopkins being knocked backwards on his butt was not indicative of his normal technique.

I have some contentions with Riley’s analysis of depth.

I have never worried about WR play because history tells us that we will be good this year and next year and the year after that. We lost James, and Marcus took over. We lost Marcus, and Brandin took over. Now we’ve lost Brandin. This cycle has been occurring at OSU forever under Riley. If there’s one position group I can point to as productive on a collegiate level and showing signs of skill beyond, it’s WR.

WR is and always will be the deepest pool of talent on our team under Riley. They are the most important piece, and they are easy to develop.

That being said, I think it’s rather cool that the man says RB is deep. He sees the same value we all see in the players he’s brought in. And he’s willing to listen to Garrett about using them as a blunt weapon instead of the over-use we’ve seen in past years. At least, that’s my take on that comment. We have several backs who can plug and play. And we now have coaching who puts those players in a position to win every situation.

Maybe that’s just me thinking Garrett is way more than I thought he was. I’m really thinking I was wrong in a big way about his hire. I’m a little excited to see his words in action. I just hope he gets that chance. I would love to see our pro-set run efficiently on a RBBC formula. And I think going forward this can be a huge selling point to recruits. You come to OSU and be a part of the system. You don’t waste your limited playing life on useless reps for individual glory. You spend your time getting value reps and honing your skills to be a next level player.

The NFL is changing in that way. It makes complete sense for the NFL feeder league to do the same.

Although I am inclined to agree with you to a point about the WR position, we are really inexperienced there. Every year, or so it seems, a senior that has had limited action steps up and becomes a really valuable part of the offense because having the mental part of the game down pat. Cummings was that guy last year and after he went down, so did the offense. Boom was positioned to be that guy this year and now he is trying to play DE.

Mannion may be the most important “coach” this year running the captain’s practices. If he can get the young guys up to speed we should be ok. The physical talent is there, but they need to know their assignments so he trusts them. FTD.

I agree wit the idea that the third receiver makes a difference. And having Cummings available would have made a huge difference last year. But I think the plug and play mentality will rule from here forward. That has an immense value in terms of mitigating drop-off value in the “third receiver” slot. Everybody gets reps. Everybody gets time.

If we don’t have a QB smart enough to adjust to the “everybody” concept, then we should just resign ourselves to being mediocre forvever. I think Mannion is poised for a magnificent year with multiple options. The O-line will always be my bugaboo. I think we need to sign at least four per year with the hopes that at least half of them take hold. But that’s another talk. Mannion has many weapons, and I think he’s smart enough to make it work.

Hopefully this won’t jinx anything but Conforto and Wetzler are having two of the all time great seasons ever. Conforto is leading the nation in OBP and hitting over .400. Wetzler with a sub 1 ERA and a .135 batting average against.

I’m not as confident as Jack regarding receivers this year. Yes- WR is a major strength in Riley’s offense, and in the long term we’ll have no shortage of stars. But even though we’ve had a parade of WR playmakers (Hass->Straughter->James->Wheaton->Cooks), we definitely had some rebuilding years at the position. Go back and check ’07 and ’10. Maybe Boldin and/or Mullaney take a major step forward this year…or maybe not.

Regardless, what’s more encouraging to me is what I’ve heard Garrett say on the matter. What I’ve heard repeatedly is that we have depth at TE and RB, and we need to utilize it. Maybe we just run 2 (or fewer) WR sets all season long, and use our TEs and RBs to shore up the receiving game. That would certainly play to our strengths, and would be interesting to watch.

That is what I am hoping for. Woods has some issues as a pure runner, but he is a very good receiver

I think Woods has durability issues as well, the RBBC approach could be part of the answer. While RBBC can be said to lead to predictability, execution can overcome a lot of that. But, as Garrett has said, everything has to be done “exactly right”.

RBBC can be excellent if the system is consistent. I have zero problems with plug and play if we’re a machine.

The defense… hoo boy… that needs to get less complicated so our coaches don’t blame the players for not playing defense… apparently. I happen to think it comes down to recruiting talent in the trenches. But who am I to disagree with the oh so proven winning method on display at OSU?

I’m not even touching upon the TE condition. We’re supposedly solid there, but that depends on WR depth for their remaining healthy.

Someone always steps up “next year” when we’re talking about WR depth. The second and third options are the ones who save the TEs from being eaten alive. Mullaney was to California HS football as Mike Hass was to Oregon HS football. I expect extreme greatness from the kid. And I doubt he’ll disappoint.

The questions will surround Bolden and others. I think the raw talent assembled is just amazing. If Viillamin comes out of Prop 48 land he can be a special player as well. We’re just stacked at WR in terms of talent. And I trust Brennan to make the most of that group… aside from my blind faith that Riley always has receivers available.

Good point. Got distracted…we’re going to see Joe Rogan in SB tonight. My lady likes his podcast (his standup seems pretty bad from what I’ve seen).

I’ll be gone after making the thread so behave, doods.

Yeah he was surprisingly good. His youtube videos kind of blow so I wasn’t expecting much, but even so he was objectively good tonight.

Never listened to his podcast but his stand up is terrible. I can think of probably a dozen or so comedians I’d rather go see. Good luck. At least they serve drinks.
