On the Recruiting Front

16

Let's be honest, the talent and depth on the defensive side of the ball has been lacking for almost two years now, and if the problem is to be corrected it's going to have to start with recruiting.

Well, the good news is we've received several commitments at a position of need.

Kerry Eggers, as is his wont, was correct in saying 3-star linebacker Jabral Johnson has decomitted from Arizona and will be attending Oregon State with fellow teammate Ty Zimmerman.

Brock Haman is another to keep an eye on. He visits next weekend and has serious interest in the Beavers, but ultimately expect him to commit to Arizona. A late push from UCLA could land him there as well, especially if Neuheisel lands his auto-commit chopper in Scottsdale.

    • I heard October with Zimmerman.

Wildcard is how the visit goes…even Zimmerman can change his mind once he sees Corvallis. But right now that’s how it stands.

  1. Now that Johnson has a decommit, he’ll be looked at as questionable until he signs.

Of course, we should be skeptical of most until they sign, but it’s in our nature to want to believe the best for our own team.

Lewis’ game makes it look like we have a certain LB type we like to chase. Slight of frame, quick and really fast seems to be the type Banker likes. I’d like some brute force thrown in the mix as well.

But I like Lewis’ game. He just needs to wrap up to make it all look really impressive.

Haman looks good as well, but he’s the prototype fill-in prospect. He’d be a zero or two star if he played in Oregon, but we all know he deserves a high three star rating.

There has been much made of our recruiting and ratings. But I think we’re in limbo at the moment. The last couple years have proven that we’ve missed some major prospects in-state while chasing some un-gems or flat out duds from out of state. The Oregon HS game has changed quite a bit over the last decade, so I think our staff is stuck recruiting a new game with an old idea.

    • I would say there’s very little chance with Peat. I think our bets are on Jesse Williams and who might come with him. Vei Moala is out there, and he’s made little noise other than a Cal lean. If Williams were to beast his way to OSU we might find a couple other guys on their way here as well.

    • I agree, no on Peat.

Williams is possible. I’d put it at 25% right now due to opportunity for early playing time. We rarely win recruiting battles versus the SEC, though.

  2. Hey Angry,

Not exactly recruiting but do you think we should play Gwacham this year or not? I can’t decide what is the best move. If this is one of our best shots at making the Rose Bowl, will Gwacham contribute enough to make it worth a year of eligibility?

    • Definitely not. His routes aren’t there. Like Quatre said, give it a year or two. He seems to be a quick study so maybe once James is gone next year.
