13.Dec.2012 Did the Beavs Solve Their DB Woes?

The highest rated DB before this morning was Brandon Arnold. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEdnBbFCnPc

Some things that stand out:

  • He's playing safety on many of these interceptions.
  • He doesn't trust his speed (keeps looking back on the 2nd INT)
  • On the third INT, he's looking for any reason to go to the ground.

What I'm seeing is he doesn't have top end speed (or at least doesn't trust it) and he's soft. Now, if you watch further he plays the run tough, comes up and makes hit, etc. I don't know what to make of this guy, but I am not overly impressed.

Many are feeling like OSU solved their CB concerns this morning because Steven Nelson signed with the Beavs, and he holds a USC offer. I like what I see from Nelson. Big, strong, fast, embraces contact, but most of his film is punt/kick returns: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4naDVZ_EWqQ

What do you think, are these guys the answer? Tyler Hasty should be in the mix next year, but  with my cursory glance at Nelson I think he could line up opposite Reynolds.

I wince every time I hear about a kid who has signed with the Beavs but also has offers from one or more of the top tier schools.

Been disappointed way too many times by kids never making it to OSU as a student.

I hate recruiting season especially with Riley as head coach.

Martin is kind of hit and miss, hopefully he can have the same type if improvement that Reynolds had over the offseason. What I liked about Nelson’s film is he would get in position to make the play and then make it. Regardless of who wins the job they have enormous shoes to fill left by poyer.

And m&s, I have a difficult time seeing Nelson go elsewhere. Grades and good and he is coming up to Corvallis for winter term. Change would have to come quick.

Yeah, I guess some of you still consider Martin an option. He played well a few games this year, but I don’t see him as the answer. It’s one thing to be a nickle and play spot duty and another to start and play every down. I think he’d get exposed quickly.

Definely needs some improvement from Martin. If we can get more out if him next year that’s always a plus even if he is still our nickel guy.

Agreed on Nelson changing his mind. It’s rather unlikely at this point, and he’s been a big fan of Rod Perry. Also, he’s a JUCO kid so he’ll be signing an LOI next week.

Martin and Reynolds will start next year. Maybe Hasty or Nelson comes in for the nickel package. Nelson has 3 to play 2 so if Hasty steps up, maybe Nelson can redshirt and start when Reynolds and Martin graduate.

The reason why I see Martin starting next year is because he has taken some good strides forward this year. He was shaky at first but he’s held down the outside when Poyer moved to the nickelback.( Pretty sure Poyer was the main nickelback all year). With Perry, he should continue his development and I would think his skills would ramp up faster with Perry.

Arnold’s a S, and he’s nice and all. But he doesn’t look like an option at CB. Strong is really nice. He plays SS and OLB well at the HS level. He really reminds me of Kenjon Barner… only he’s bigger, stronger and much faster than Kenjon will ever be. I think he’s a great prospect at CB with his strength, speed and agility. And Jones ain’t no slouch either.

Nelson should fit in where Poyer leaves off. Martin and Reynolds will likely fill out depth. And Hasty and the Commish should get looks… maybe moving Robinson back to S or making him into that hybrid LB they were talking about when he signed. And don’t forget we still have Noland, Hill and Ashton back at S to back up Murph and TZ.

But this is the kid who excites me most.

JB Is there a chance Vic Bulter’s little brother decides to play RB? I ask because you compare him to Barner… and he turned out pretty good at it.

Different system. He’s likely a little light to be a pro-set RB. Then again, we’ve been undersized at RB for years now, so who knows? Still, I think he’s a CB/SS prospect. I’m just thinking his speed and strength would be awesome as a CB if he’s a fluid athlete as well.

I think Martin has been good, he has shown good tackling, and a short memory. I have seen him get better with more playing time as the season has come on. Has he had some bad moments? Yes, but that position will increase those odds (Poyer and Reynolds were also beat at times this season, so that is the nature of the position). With Reynolds and Martin back, and then Steve Christian who I was impressed with how quickly he came in and produced after only going through Fall camp. Then we have Hasty and Nelson in the fold. I like our depth and talent here.

Safety is a much bigger concern for me, and I think that is why they have gone heavy on S with Solomon and Arnold and Strong. I am not sure about Zimmerman, he seems to have leveled off and doesn’t look completely comfortable, maybe another year and he starts figuring things out especially tackle routes. I don’t see Ashton providing much other than ST. I don’t remember who else they may have redshirted for the Safety position? Murphy’s been really solid, so we have some good experience back there, but need some depth.

My other concern is Linebacker, with just one commit. I think losing out on Ragin is a blow. We have Skotte, Welch and Doctor back, but it seems that the depth is not there as Akuna, Jabral Johnson didn’t show enough mentally to get on the field consistently. We need some players here.

Wonder how all of this new interest in the CB position will affect Dashon Hunt’s decision. He recently had us in his top 2 with Boise St. Wondering if the sudden depth at that position will turn him away? He seems to be one of the more highly regarded recruits on our radar. Sounds like he’s making his decision on December 30th at a postseason game he’s been invited to play in.

The number of quality players will increase, and coaching has improved. I suggest the db needs will essentially addressed, but the inexperience is going to show itself.

These less experience db’s would benefit from improved DT play and more qb pressure

Doesn’t matter much to BDC that “none of these guys deserve raises”, as kman says, just show BDC what the market rate is out there (yeah, I know…very small sample). A competing offer during a year when the record is 9-3 is all BDC would need to start hitting up donors.

As was suggested months ago, a good record this season is (was) enough to cause MR’s supporters and the fence sitters to forget about the previous two years.

Riley would be a huge loss, especially right now. Lots to complain about from our athletic dept and donors, but we have made strides in staff (bray, Brennan, brasfield, perry) and now we can build on it. Hopefully AD will pony up to keep em. There is not a better coach than Riley on the market. Can’t see him leaving, will be surprised if this report is accurate.

Very true. You can finish 3rd and still make the RB game.

Earlier today Riley said one great recruiting tool he uses is his contract through 2020 and he tells recruits and their families that he intends on seeing that through.
Was a good radio interview. He said #1 question recruits ask is “when will I get to play?” He also pointed out that everyone forgets thateveryone in the country, including the recruit is focused on football except the two most important people in the decision making process, the parents. They’re way more concerned about how are you going to take care of my some over the next 3-5 years?
