The title says it all — this team looks just as bad, if not worse, than last year’s team.
At times vs MN and Boise State they looked improved. They had some pass rush and attitude, and game 1 I remember thinking they passed the eyeball test a bit more, but it hasn’t lead to any positive results.
What do you guys see?
Any improvement? Is the co-coordinator system doing anything for you or the team? Has there been any creativity to make up for the lack of talent? Are GA’s threats and mood swings getting old?
With each loss all of that gets worse as fans grow impatient and frustrated. The Beavs badly need a conference win to settle everyone down and show progress, yet it hasn’t happened and looks far from happening.
Meanwhile, Riley is 5-0 at Nebraska. Not saying I wanted to keep Riley. This is a gamble I’m glad we took, but he’s 5-0 and ranked #15 and climbing. He worked with the mobile QB he was given. GA booted almost every QB from the program, and ironically, has wound up basically with pocket passers. Maybe we’re all biased in favor of GA simply because he isn’t Riley and says what we wanted to hear Riley say for years. Just saying, real talk.
Anyway, I’m sure we’ll hear more talk about “the kids” bringing their “big boy pants”, but GA needs to bring his big boy pants out on the recruiting trail and up-sell this trainwreck (dubbed the GA Express) as early playing time.
If memory serves me correctly when McMaryion made his first appearance last year he threw a pick 6 in the first few plays. The play that was called was a high risk play so he didn’t have a chance to settle down and build some confidence.
Today, imo, it was the same situation for Blount. A play was called which required timing, something he hasn’t had a lot of time to develop with his teammates.
It’s easy to say the players aren’t good but imo at least some of the fault lies with the play calling and the coaching.

I’m at the Portland State/Idaho St game right now and PSU leads 31-6 at the half. GA is lucky he had Idaho St on the schedule this year

This looks like the Colorado rebuild. They were a little worse the second year than the first. If it hits year three and the team isn’t at least competitive, then it’s panic time.
Colorado was not worse in year 2. They didn’t win a PAC game like year 1 but it was a better team in year 2. Much more competitive overall in year 2.
Their record was worse, as will likely be ours. Hard to compare between years in either situation since they all sucked.
I never bought into Anderson, his handling of the QBs last spring was a massive red flag and this year is demonstrating that he does not understand that position at all. I also recall him talking about spreading teams out and playing at different paces (no huddle at times, huddle at other times) but that has simply led to confusion and lack of a coherent offensive vision. I still don’t know what type of offense this team is trying to run.
I don’t want Riley back but I do not feel good about Anderson in anyway, shape, or form.
People want to blame the players and while they are overmatched on talent. They are losing PAC games by an average of nearly 30 points. They aren’t that overmatched. They just aren’t. Anderson is getting out schemed by offenses (isn’t he suppose to be a good defensive coach?) and his inability to evaluate the QB position has led to an offense that simply can’t sustain drives often enough to win games.
Frankly, I think Anderson might just be a disaster of a hire.
I don’t see a game I believe they can win this year. 0-18 start in PAC play along with only 3 total wins and I think Ed Ray would need to start trying to line up buy out money if it doesn’t change in year 3. You can’t let this go on for more than 3 years or you will completely lose an already dwindling fan base. Last week Reser was 25% empty and would have been 50% empty if not for Boise State fans driving to Corvallis. By 2018 I think they’d be lucky to draw 15,000 fans without significant improvement. That alone makes a buyout worth it.
The talent and depth on the offensive and defensive lines is not good. Buffs QB’s had all day to throw today. The first two touchdowns the safety clearly made the wrong read on who he was supposed to cover whom and both were easy TD pitch and catch.

as you stated in the previous thread QB play is a problem. But it’s only part of the problem. You could put the second coming of Brett Favre back there and he wouldn’t look much better behind that offensive line.
The defensive front continues to get very little push. As a result the continually get burned. But they make up for it by continually taking poor angles, making wrong reads/calls (see the Buffs first two easy TD’s) and flailing after missing tackles. I see very little talent in the upper classmen and a lot of mistakes by them and the underclassmen. If Chappell is one of your best defensive players, that’s pretty damn pathetic.
As for Riley being 5-0, he is winning with Bo Pelini’s players. And argue all you want but two years ago Nebby still had better talent. Let’s see where both the coaches and programs are after 4-5 years.

Villamin has all but disappeared, Bolden is……well Bolden so you take the good with the bad, Collins has been a bright spot (idk what happened today everyone was butthurt that he did, I missed it). We heard all spring and fall about Timmy Hernandez and I’m not sure he’s even caught a pass this season. Paul Lucas has been mia as well. What. The. Fuck.
I said last week the O and D line recruiting needs to be top priority. I stand by that statement. Mason Moran is the future at QB but they are not going to pull his redshirt this season.
GA’s first year recruiting to me is a moot point. Mostly garbage and filler as he had little time to pull that class together. Let’s see if there’s improvement now that the VFC expansion is almost complete before we go along with the you can’t recruit to Corvallis bullshit. After all, Leach won 9 games in Pullman last season. It can’t be any easier to recruit there.

I don’t recall making any claims about the talent on the offensive line or the defensive line so not sure what you are talking about with that statement/question.
I made 2 claims with regards to the QB:
1) The QB had multiple opportunities to make big completions downfield and his accuracy was a problem
That was true regardless of the OL talent, those opportunities were there
2) That the QB failed to recognize times that CU had a free blitzer and didn’t hit the hot route
That was also true.
I at no time made any other claims about the talent on the OL.
As for what would happen if this team had the 2nd coming of Brett Favre, they’d have scored more than 6 points. I guarantee it. OL talent be damned, an elite QB will score points.
That does not mean OL talent isn’t important but claiming elite QBs need one to be successful is simply untrue, its not a necessity for an elite QB; it just isn’t. Plenty of elite QBs have succeeded behind bad lines. Happens all the time.

I’m sorry you see Pac-12 caliber talent where it isn’t. Can’t help you there. What you can do is a position by position comparison to the other 11 Pac teams and see if you think the OSU player at that particular position is statistically better or more skilled.
What I CAN tell you is that Oregon St had zero players on the first or second offensive or defensive all conference teams when the awards were announced last December. 5 were honorable mention and 3 of those 5 are gone either due to graduation or the NFL draft (Seumalo). That doesn’t speak of having talent at many positions really.

Can’t defend an 0-18 record in conference play if that is where this season ends. Cal, Wazzu, and Colorado didn’t even do that poorly through two seasons, and I’d argue they were facing much worse circumstances.
I expect to see GA make some coaching changes at the end of this season if he finishes 1-11. It’ll be very disconcerting if he doesn’t.

So in Anderson’s 16 games the Beavers have scored 318 points and given up 566 points.
On average they are losing 35-20 and that includes the 3 wins. Take the wins out and that drops to 220 vs. 531 points in losses or the losses are on average 41-17.
Those numbers aren’t just ugly, I am struggling to believe they are true. This team is not even competitive.

If we were willing to play Seth Collins as a True Freshman, why not Moran? If he isn’t already better than the stable of QB’s we have then he isn’t likely the QB of the future. In a perfect world we could redshirt every freshman QB, but this team needs the best option and if that is Moran, he needs to play now. Was our defense so bad in practice that Garretson seemed like a viable option this year or is GA mismanaging the QB situation again? Play Moran now, see what you have and hit the recruiting trail hard for a decent QB. Andersen keeps this up he won’t be here for Moran’s final season anyway, IMHO. Just throwing a few ideas out, seeing what sticks to the wall, much like what GA has done with his team this year. By the way Wisconsin’s QB play looks much improved last two years, coincidence?

Nope, why burn Moran’s redshirt for 8 games when its unlikely to make a difference? Have to take the long term view with Moran at this point. You can argue GA should have gone with Moran from game 1 but now that the team is 1-3 you don’t burn a year of eligibility.
That said, I’d start Blount the rest of the way and see if he has the potential to be given a scholarship and battle Moran for the 2017 job.
i agree lets see blount from the start. if garrettson hits some of those deep balls and other passes at the beginning of the game it would have been competitive at least for a little while. when you don’t hit those passes it stalls drives and kills momentum and allows the defense to cheat. i think moran is redshirting because he just isn’t ready to play yet. i remember reading a lot of practice reports where he threw picks.
Play him to keep the fanbase engaged and get him ready for next year. I mean why even watch or attend a Beaver game? There is no improvement and effort is on the decline instead of incline. There has to be a reason to watch or go. Moran, in return, would get 8 games under his belt and be ready next year. Meaningless games like these are the best time to get him experience.
Same could be said for Blount and his redshirt is already burnt. Its short sighted and 99% of the fan base has no idea who Moran is so they’d get no more excited by seeing him than they’ll get with going with Blount. You are just as likely to stunt his growth by throwing him into games too early as you are to help him grow as a player.
Blount is the less valuable walk on commodity. Let him take the lumps.
The only way Moran helps draw in fans is if they start winning with him in there and if he were ready to make that happen I think he would have already been in the game.
Not only is the team NOT getting any better, one could argue it has gotten demonstrably WORSE every game. It’s hard to believe that last year’s game vs. Colo. at Reser was a competitive match up and this one wasn’t as close as the score indicated. In the Mannion era I was of the opinion that OSU was effectively playing 10 vs. 11, because Sean was so immobile. I now realize that was a vast overstatement. Yes, it would have been nice to have had a QB with a semblance of mobility (everyone else seems to have one; indeed Garretson is appreciably more mobile than Mannion) but the fundamental skill required in a QB is being able to deliver the ball, and Garretson has now proved he can’t. I didn’t watch or listen to the second half, so I’m going out on a limb to say that Blount’s first game productivity was perhaps a bit like Nick Mitchell’s one flash of effectiveness mid-season last year before we could all see it was a fluke. I don’t think it’s our of the realm of possibility that we see Moran play this year. Without regard to how one views that question in the abstract, the ONE thing we know for sure is that the Andersen has completely bungled the QB situation at OSU and why would we think that should stop now? I ‘ve been chastised in this forum for two years de-crying the fact that Del Rio was run out of town. I’ve never bought the “he doesn’t fit the scheme argument” because half the time OSU huddles up anyway. In sum: a near perfect storm: UW ascendant, Riley winning elsewhere; only the Ducks losing a bit offers a quantum of solace.

Accuracy is the #1 skill of any sport. When looking at QBs the first thing I google is their completion %. If it’s low I don’t want the guy, or he better have a damn good excuse (awful receives who lead the league in drops, for example). Really what training is is just getting your muscles able to repeat the same motions over and over with consistency. Guys who lack accuracy had a breakdown in discipline somewhere along the way. Take Collins…my guess is that he relied on his legs so much he never fully trained his arm. Guys fail for various reasons like that, but it’s rarely talent. Anyone can teach their muscles to do something if they work on it properly. Proper practice is highly focused on the muscular movement at slow speeds.
So with all this in mind, who did GA recruit at QB this cycle? Willard, who has an AWFUL completion %…

Could be GA wants to adapt to the talent on the roster, but certainly in the case of the QB position his background makes it clear that he “doesn’t fit the scheme” of productively adapting.
Riley’s 5-0 is a “soft 5-0”. First half of his schedule this year is very favorable (actually more like the first 2/3rds) When he beats Ohio St., I will bow down. Unfortunately, we are going to have to go thorugh a lot of “Nebraska is back” bullshit because the division they play in is awful.

I’m still hoping GA can do this, but another thing to consider. His “turnaround” was done with a non- Power 5 team, those type of improvements aren’t that rare. We always have the Toledo’s, Miami-Ohio’s, Marshalls’, Troys going up and down. Seems like a lot of it depends on the QB
GA did not turnaround Wisconsin. So I guess what I’m saying is that his reputation as a turnaround expert is ok, but not earth shattering. He had no previous experience turning around a Power 5 program. I hope he’s not the next Dan Hawkins.
GA has shuffled the deck nearly every way imaginable: QB, O-line, OC, multiple position changes. Is he actually trying to match up with the “skills” of the roster or just throwing stuff at the wall? In the case of QB and OC does he recognize skills or lack thereof?
Could be he really is “just throwing stuff at the wall” now in hopes of having enough time to establish a hard ass rep which attracts hard ass players?
Two areas seem to have improved: Sp Teams, administrative penalties (my impression w/o research).
Special teams (at least the return game) have been good for years. The penalties have definitely improved.

They said on the radio there has been 0 return yards on punts so far this year. For as much as we have punted that’s pretty good. I think they gained a couple of yards today, like 2 or 3.
Rebuilds suck. I don’t expect rationality right after a big beat down. Unfortunately you have to wait years to see if they will work. You can’t have a new staff come in and blow up the program only to bail on them after 1.25 years.

I am willing to give GA four seasons to turn this program around. Using Colorado as an example. They went 1-21 in PAC12 play prior to this season. I expect this year to be bad. After playing Idaho St I only expected us to win one game all season. GA needs more time to build and recurit. Does anyone remember an 0-12 Huskies??
2-22 but that was also a team that was coming off 2-10 and 1-11 seasons, hadn’t been bowling in 5 years, and hadn’t had a winning season in 7 years.
GA took over a team that was coming off a 5-7 season and only a year removed from a Bowl game and had been bowling in 6 of the previous 8 years.
I understand the attempt to justify the dumpster fire in Corvallis but it does not compare to the Colorado rebuild. It just doesn’t.

That makes your bowl game in 6 out of 8 years factually incorrect. Riley had this program trending downward. Many have acknowledged this.

I’m really not sure why you bring it up. Yes the oline needs help, juco guys would be nice. But we didn’t know we needed more olinemen until 3 months after spring ball. I’m not sure what you’re looking for? You can’t pull players out of the air and you have limits on how many you can sign.
Driving QB’S away? Lol. Del Rio was tied for 3rd on the depth chart in spring. If he was so awesome why did he leave? Did you ever watched him play at OSU? He was a mediocre QB with almost 0 mobility…..perfect fit for the spread.
And GA’S OC change….do we know if Baldwin asked to be moved. Everyone just assumes GA demoted him, yet the guy is still here. It makes no sense to stay at a school after being demoted, especially when you are fairly well known OC and have had success at other schools. If he was looking I could only imagine he would be picked up in a heartbeat.
Riley was on a downward slide it’s a fact, I don’t care that he played in the Hawaii bowl in 2013, neither does anyone else.

You guys are living in denial. Successful coaches don’t have 16 game stretches that are this bad. They just don’t. But keep believing its just part of the process.
If he doesn’t have a winning record by 2018 then he needs to go. Simple as that. I don’t think anyone here is finding that unreasonable except a few, like you.
I believe Riley was on the Dee Andros-like glide path. If he had stayed my sense is that OSU would have gone 3-9; 4-8 at best in 2015, and yes, it would have been even worse than that this year; approximating where we are. That’s the devious thing about his career trajectory. He leaves after ’98 when it seems the program might finally break through to a winning season. By the grace of God, Dennis Erickson drops in our lap and the damnable thing is Riley got about half the credit for the success we saw from 1999-2002. Erickson’s credibility stocks the program with several good cohorts of recruits, and when that played out, (and the level of coaching competition ramped up markedly, Riley couldn’t maintain it. The year before he probably would have been fired, Nebraska takes him off our hands.

I think it’s funny how many dislike Del Rio based on Andersen dropping him down the depth chart. That truly means nothing to me. He’s shown no ability to evaluate QBs and the fact that Florida grabbed him and chose him as their starter leads me to believe he is definitely better than the guys in Corvallis.
So he cant complete passes during the spring ball and he’s supposed to be the #1 guy…..makes since.
Collins couldn’t complete passes yet Andersen made him #1.

Seth was 12-22 with 209 yards 2 TDs and no ints in the same spring game del rio couldn’t complete a pass, Mitchell was the next best 6-12 for 59 and an int, and vanderveen threw 1 int. Yes giving seth the starting job made since then.

That is not the best way to pick a starting QB. But to each their own.
At worst the guy who was #2 at the end of the previous season (and had real game action) should have remained in the competition for the job into Fall camp.

Riley was definitely not the answer. It’s weird people are even thinking about going there. Only thing he was good at was recruiting QBs and WRs. Bad coach, bad game management, no discipline. GA has none of those problems, but they do have the same problem of bad play calling. GA needs an OC and a QB. Then he needs bodies in the trenches and depth everywhere. Is it his fault? Yes. He let too many guys walk for being weaklings who couldn’t take his mindset, and now he’s left with nothing. He burned bridges when he claims to care about the kids. What he cares about his winning and thinks he can abuse/will people into doing that with tough love and discipline, and he can’t. Some players respond to other methods. He can’t see this, and so now he’s dug his own grave. We’ll see if he digs out of it.
Definitely showed his warts. He’s a flawed coach, and now we know what WI fans were yapping about when they warned us.
I think GA gets off on that moment when a program flips and he’s constantly chasing the rush of that moment. It’s like a playboy who’s 60 and still constantly chasing tail. The rush of the chase never gets old for some.
I want to be clear, I’m in no way claiming Riley was/is the answer.
My stance is that it’s reasonably clear to me that GA is not the answer either. Am I quick to pull that trigger? Yes I am but sometimes it’s obvious. I find it obvious in this case.
Honestly, as a Seahawks fan it reminds me of the transition from the Holmgren era to the Carroll era. I had many of the same gripes with Holmgren as I had with Riley, Holmgren was clearly trending downward in Seattle, when he left they hired Jim Mora who had a decent history with the Falcons, after 1 year it was obvious he wasn’t the guy and they quickly made the change. Now they have Carroll who is better than both.
This feels similar, I’d rather pull the bandaid instead of letting it linger.
Carroll was a crappy NFL coach his first stint and there was no reason to believe he was the answer since he cheated his way to victory at USC. Seahawks basically got lucky and NFL players responded to a college coach.
They made the hire and paid lots of money for it. Call it luck all you want, it’s been a massive success.
And I think average in his 1st stint would be more accurate. He was above .500 in the NFL prior to coming to Seattle. Even Belichek got fired from an NFL coaching job.

I didn’t hire GA nor would I have. I’d never hire a defensive guy for a college head coaching job. I’m allowed to not like the hire and voice that displeasure, it’s pretty hilarious to be attacked for being critical of a coach on this site. Of all the sites on the Internet, this is the last place is expect someone to tell me to pony up the cash.

This rebuild is s dumpster fire. No mistaking that. Personally I think they are done winning this year. GA has dug a hole, the question is can he get out of it,in a reasonable amount of time. Conservatively speaking, Ed Ray should start gathering the money required to get rid of Andersen and not be sneaky about it. He needs to feel some pressure, no more free pass.I’d give him till year 4 but that better be a bowl game year.
Oh, so it’s win immediately under all unreasonable expectations or get shown the door? How well has that worked for some of the more prominent programs like, Texas, or USC? Riley basically left the cupboard bare. Oregon State has almost no depth to speak of and everyone wants them to be a title contender in the blink of an eye. I am a firm believer that patience yields better results than a quick firing trigger and that you cannot truly judge a coach until his 3rd or 4th year. To expect someone to come in and immediately go from worst to playoff contender is ghastly unrealistic and borders on SEC level idiocy. It takes time to build a good program. Unless one of you thinks we can honestly lure a Nick Saban level hire away from Alabama or something like that, let this play out. If it’s still a tire fire two years from now I’ll help you kick him out the door myself. Until then… PATIENCE.

Yes, some of the blowouts have been bad like today. Here’s the P12 games that weren’t 30 pt blowouts:
@ Oregon 42-52 – had plenty of chances to win this game – mental errors
@ Utah 12-27 – kind of a methodical performance. This is when Collins lost his QB spot.
Colorado 13-17 – do we need to rehash this one?
@ Washington State 31-52 – OSU decided to show up after halftime, not before.
Stanford – 24-42 – at one point OSU was leading this game but the eventual Pac-12 champion wore them down.
Let’s not get over our skies, but this Colorado team that we lost to today is playing well enough to win the South Division, they’ve gotten that much better. You want signs of improvement I think they need to present themselves during the home games before we start to worry that the whole thing needs to blow up. This was a deck-stacked-against-us game and I think people are more up in arms because they are used to Colorado sucking. That’s not the case anymore.

I know someone else said this, but what kind of offense are we even? We will go no huddle then sporadically decide to go up tempo, with success most times, then slow it back down. I think it comes down to needing a new coordinator that is 100% sold on the up tempo spread, or vice versa with a huddle pro style offense. Make up your minds.
