This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper — T.S. Elliot

Green officially gone (we kind of knew that)…

Cotton a Buff (Now being told the Tweet saying this was deleted).

Judson a Duck (No surprise, but a loss on the trail). I didn’t like this guy anyway. Seems like an awful human.

At this point we have to hope to land George Moore. It would salvage a really poor month at the #1 position of need.

  1. I’m not gonna join the hand wringing. Green ticks me off because he demonstrates that you’re probably better off coming in late and going after guys (shiny new toy) but otherwise I am not all that upset with this class. Especially that he flips to Utah, seriously Utah?

I think the December signing period (that will likely exist next year) will help OSU and similar schools that get in early on guys.

    • I have to say I am impressed how hard Andersen and staff have fought on the recuriting trail this year. We were fighting for better players this year overall. I still only count this class as Andersen second recuriting class. Overall every guy he is brining in are bigger and faster IMO. It’s hurts to watch guys go to other programs but I think Andersen will not give up and keep working hard to improve the football team.

    • Also Utah offered Morris late who is one of our best recurits who hasn’t signed yet. He hasnt wavered with us yet. I think it depends on the guy.

  2. On the surface, doesn’t it look like there are more carries out there for a younger RB at Utah than at Oregon St, right now? Pierce looked damn good to me and so did Cook last year, but once Nall and Pierce were healthy there were no carries for Cook. If I’m a frosh RB recruit, I’m thinking when am I going to get the ball, when I’m a junior? I can’t count on injuries. The staff may need to find two stars and develop them for the next couple of years. Plus I gotta think Lucas left because of this situation.

    • Any recruit that thinks that way won’t succeed anyway.

That isn’t what I think happened though. I think its more the “shiny new toy” theory. OSU was his girlfriend, he’d been with her for months and suddenly this pretty girl started giving him attention; he couldn’t help himself.

I know flips happen often but I do wonder how many guys that flip last minute (and not because of coaching changes) end up succeeding. Utah didn’t see Green as a priority till January, how much of a priority will he really be to them when he gets on campus? Meanwhile OSU had been heavily invested in Green. I think his odds of success would’ve been much stronger at OSU.

      • I disagree, I think recruits are getting more and more savvy. You can’t tell me playing time possibilities don’t play into a decision with average programs like Oregon St. I certainly don’t know, but Utah needs RB’s now and OSU has two really good running backs who are proven. Utah has also had a lot more success with RB’s than Oregon State over the last five years. It all factors in.

        • This situation isn’t quite what you think it is in my opinion. Utah has 9 returning running backs we have 7. Both teams have 2 running backs returning that started games. For Utah there is Armand Shyne and Zack Moss. At one point last season both of these running backs were ahead of James Williams on the depth chart (mostly due to Williams’ fumbling issues). Both these running backs have seen success. Shyne was injured for the remainder of the season, necessitating Utah needing Williams to come out of retirement. At the same time Moss was injured and unavailable for a few games and it also affected his effectiveness. When you look at the situation logically the potential playing time available is about the same.

          • Kid seems super religious and loves snow mobileing so maybe the vibe around SLC was more appealing in the end.

Maybe his family liked the idea of a 10 hour drive instead of having to hop on a plane to see home games. And could easily get to the az game every year too.

In the end, if the kid doesn’t want to be here then best of luck, see you on the field.

  3. I’m curious what everyone thinks it will take for OSU to win these bigger recuriting battles going forward? Example completed football stadium, new business model for how we operate and adapt to change…. What else should we do to become more competitive on a year to year basis…

      • Mike Riley disagrees,. “Well gee, golly I reckon we didn’t get better recruits after our best seasons, but it’s a lot of work to coach in a lower tier bowl and recruit at the same time. Plus you have think about saving timeouts and having enough gum for the game. Don’t even mention trying to remember to call running plays late in a game holding a lead. I need to go down to San Antonio, this shit is stressing me out. What the hell is up with these corn eaters BTW, I just won nine games and when that dang AD called me to his office I was expecting a lifetime contract extension. Instead he makes me fire my best bud, Marky Mark Banker. He defriended me on Facebook. Dee allergies are acting up from all the corn pollen, plus I think they really expect me to win the whole thing. I ain’t no Harbaugh and I sure as heck ain’t no Urban Meyer, so good luck with that.”

    • Win more football games. That’s the bottom line. If Anderson can improve by a few wins every year he will be more successful as a recruiter. He already markets the program very
Well. Over time with wins we will see even better recruits.

  4. Overall I feel pretty good about the class. Too much weight being placed on star rating.

Angry: your philosophy the last 10 years was if you had a class full of solid 3 stars (which we have) and a few great 4 stars, with proper coaching you can build a rose bowl caliber team around that. We have this now. I think we all got sucked into the prospect of a top 30 class and are now getting disappointed. The athletes across the board look bigger, stronger, faster the Riley classes. This has been the case since ga took over.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a coaching staff recruit this hard. They have left it all on the table, so I really can’t fault them for these late defections. It seemed with Riley at the helm, we would have a couple young coaches (Brennan, langsdork, etc.) earning their keep and a bunch of lazy old dudes collecting a pay check (Riley, cav, reed, banker only “recruiting” Hawaii).

We have one of the youngest teams in the country, and a ton of them were injured when we came on strong at the end. We have OL depth, it’s just unproven, but you know Woods is coaching them up. I think Moore would give this class all we need. Be fine without him but would be the bow to wrap it up. GA’s first word once getting to know the roster he inherited was that it was completely out of whack and would take the first couple recruiting classes to balance it back out. I think with what we have that’s been done.

I expect next years class with a winning season, that they’ll be able to start landing more blue chippers to plug and play.

In GA I trust. We have a real football coach. Give him a chance and he’lol do his job.

    • Thumbs up across the board on this take.^^^^

Didn’t they have 7 rb on the roster a year ago? Lots of guys saw the ability of Nall/Pierce and switched do defense midseason.

Nall is a healthy season from being a next level player and all Pac 12 honors.

Bummed about Green but in GA we trust. Keep Moore, flip Falainiko and all is well.

    • This is a great post. Well said. Dissapointing we lost Green but not really too concerned. He has great speed but lacked ability to cut and change direction. I would take a 3* Texas RB over a late 4* RB any day. Let’s not forget the last few Beaver RBs that came out of TX. Quizz and Woods, both 3*. Overall I think this class has a lot of potential. Also love the fact that GA is not afraid to step in the ring with the big boys. A winning season or a bowl game should give us some much needed exposure and momentum in the recruiting ranks.

    • Angry: your philosophy the last 10 years was if you had a class full of solid 3 stars (which we have) and a few great 4 stars, with proper coaching you can build a rose bowl caliber team around that.

I still believe that, and some of these guys (e.g. Taylor) should be 4-stars. Never did I say otherwise. What I am saying is this class is ending with a whimper. We were ranked 25th at one point. Now we’re not top 50 on some sites. Rivals had us the highest (20s earlier this year), and they have us in the 40s now.

  5. Nemec says we have 2 new commits today, to be announced hopefully later today.
My guess would be our 2 visitors, or possibly Ah-Hoy?

  6. Clay Cordasco,,,not a single site has a recruiting profile up for him.

Rivals doesn’t even have a page.
Scout has a page, but zero rating or info.
247 has a page that says the mighty Idaho and a few other awful programs are interested in him.

Does this mean we didn’t get Moore and are on to plan F?

  7. These finishing touches on the class stink. I was on the NE sites last year saying by year 3 GA would have a top 30 recruiting class. I was right on track with that prediction until the past few weeks. What a bad ending. The Nebby fans are probably chiding me over there. They said we’d finish in the 50s and are basically the Iowa State of the Pac-12. Turns out they were right on this one. What a bad ending.

I’m hoping a signing day surprise can salvage this.

  8. Does anyone know if Emony Robinson or any of the December signees were able to count against the 2016 class?

For that matter, which class do Wallace and Garcia count against?

Assuming Wallace and Garcia are ’16, Robinson + December folks are all ’17, and Bowcut is the only mission kid, I count a net 23. Room for 2 more, presumably some wiggle room with greyshirts if the right guys come along.

  9. Double posting this because I didn’t see there was a new thread.

Just a little info on our new RB’s schools as posted by MaxPreps:

Calvin Tyler – Silsbee High 2861 Rushing Yards on 246 carries with 29 TD’s, 1 Receving TD
    6-5 Record
Class 4A-1 (Largest Schools are 6A)
Ranked the 193rd best team overall in Texas by MaxPreps

    BJ Baylor – Wharton High 1997 rushing yards on 204 carries with 24 TD’s, 4 Receiving TD’s
    8-45 Record
    Class 4A-2
Ranked 301st best team overall in Texas by MaxPreps

    • Doubling my response, then:

How many HS teams are in Texas? 193 and 301 seem like awful teams.

I like Tyler. I’m not that high on Baylor. I feel like he’s a desperation play because they wanted 2 backs. He looks small and no one skill stands out. Seems to be a good pass catcher for a RB. Maybe a scatback type. I don’t know that we need that. Green wasn’t a well-rounded back either, but at least he had game changing speed.

      • According to MaxPreps there are 1506 teams. I couldn’t tell how many of those are aix man teams, but I would guess that it is less than 100.

Agree on both. Baylor looks to have a smoother gait than Calvin from the little film I watched. If you look at the stats for both, they have very little yards in their junior years, which means they basically were one year starters.

        • Tyler has good vision, decent speed (not breakaway, but solid where he can rip off 40 yard runs), low center of gravity, decent agility. I actually think he’s a better all around back than Green. Green just has blazing speed, which is why he got that 4th star, but he was so thin and didn’t show much except that straight ahead speed. Don’t see Green being an every down back.

The issue is that Baylor is our 2nd RB in this class. He isn’t good enough for that designation.

  10. Holy shit men’s basketball might be one of the worst teams in college basketball history. 330 teams? We might just be ranked #330 this year

    • I haven’t watched MBB since game 3 or so. Once I saw Stacy was awful I knew it wasn’t worth watching. I suggest everyone do the same and go live life. There’s no reason to waste hours on MBB. WBB is phenomenal and worth the watch.

      • Sad state of affairs. Going to need to work some magic to get a quality center, PF and PG in this class. Thompson will be good and Reichle will take time to develop, but better than all of our current guards minus Stevie T and McLoughlin.

        • I think both Thompson, Tinkle, and Eubanks can be a core. McLoughlin can be fine over time.

Granted, I have watched about 3hrs of games all year. But that’s my deduction from those 3 miserable hours.

  11. Do we have any decent players coming in besides the other Thompson kid? We need some help all over the place. Expected to take a step back but honestly surprised at the regression of this team.

  12. Hoops recruiting rundown:

    2017 Signed
Ethan Thompson – 4 Star Combo Guard. More athletic, skilled and stronger than his brother. Immediate impact player.
Zach Reichle – 3 Star Shooting Guard. Plays for a tough coach at Wilsonville and probably the best player in the State of Oregon this year. I predict he takes at least a year to be ready to contribute any major minutes.

    2017 Guys on the Radar
Emmit Matthews -6′ 7″ 3/4 star Small Forward from Tacoma. Very good player who looks to be seriously consodering OSU. Would be an immediate 6/7th man.

Things are pretty quiet for the rest of the guys they are pursueing. Should heat up in the next two months.

    2018
Jack Wilson 7′ Center- Verbal Commit at this point. He is one of the top centers in the Weat and may be very hard to hang on to. We shall see.

  13. A few thoughts:

    1. Tyler is actually rated higher than Green when you average all the rankings (247). I think he will be a slightly better back than Green, time will tell.

    2. I watched Baylor’s video and do not understand the negativity. I went into it expecting to find at least a few shortcomings. I am not the expert, but to me he showed good balance, pretty good toughness, good vision, and was productive. He has a really good football running stride. I would enjoy telling everyone that we received a commit at running back that every recruiting service had highly ranked, but I think the recruiting services definitely could have missed on the potential of Baylor.

    3. Similar to point 2 Cordasco is the example of someone almost missed completely by the recruiting services. He played high school ball in Maine where they rarely put out D1 college football players and had to travel across the country just to find a chance to play in junior college. Of the few colleges that evaluated him he received offers. I definitely see him as a recruit that was mostly missed by the recruiting services and with this background it is easy to see why. I am not that concerned that he is not highly rated.

    4. Just because we received Cordasco as a commitment does not mean anything about Moore, we still need at least 1 more OL by my count. 10 on scholarship on roster, 3 high school commits and 2 JC commits. We want the number to be at 16.

    5. I would like to see a recruiting class ranked under 30 as well, but 247 is just not accurate. We are currently ranked in the low 40s and not at 50. If 247 averages other recruiting services rankings then how can theirs be so much higher. The only explanation is ESPN(ESPN does not post rankings past 40) has us ranked at 68 to make the average of 247 at 50. If this is the case then ESPN is flat out wrong making 247 still wrong.

  14. I really hope Jeffery Manning can ball at the collegiate level.

Kid is easily my favorite recruit since Cooks. Recruits other players as hard as anyone and is funny. Glad he’s on our side.

  15. The MBB problem is also a coaching problem.
This really bad season for Tinkle should give him pause for his ability as a coach. If he reflects on this and makes adjustments it should mean he will be a better coach next season. He will be worse if he denies.

    • Disagree. If anything the fact that this team hasn’t completely imploded like the CR teams of old is a testament to his ability. His recruiting is definitely poor, which has put him in this situation, but he has them steadily improving to the point where they are actually hanging in against other teams. I don’t think they go winless, I think they’ll actually end the season strong with a couple wins. Tinkle needs to learn how to scout high schoolers better, his coaching is fine IMO

      • Except for the fact Tinks is a better recruiter than CR ever pretended to be, that he has more talent on this team than CR ever had, and that this team is far worse than any team CR rolled out at any time in his coaching career… I’d say you’re pretty dead on.

          • So you would say the combination of injuries plus an unsat result in recruiting Juco players has left the team poor in the depth department. And you wouldn’t be wrong.

And yet we still have more healthy talent than we ever had under CR… except maybe Roe’s senior year… if we’re including heath as a part of our reasoning.

And yet that still does not address how poorly this team plays as a whole. I can grab guys from Dixon and coach them up to beat this team. Their attitude completely sucks, and they give sporadic effort. The offense is constantly moving our bigs and our cuts away from the hoop except in iso, which is really one of our guys getting double teamed because there is a whole bunch of talent standing around doing nothing to even draw the D.

Walk-ons for other teams are getting many minutes against us too.

I’m missing the days when we only barely lose to Radford.

  16. As folks have said above, you have to start winning games in order to attract and keep the higher rated recruits. Well, this is a bit of a paradox isn’t it? Don’t we need better recruits to start winning more games? Or is Andersen a good enough coach to win more games with lower level recruits? If he is, then we don’t have any reason to worry about this class. If GA can’t win more games with lower rated recruits, well then we are just screwed and we’ll be stuck in the lower half of the PAC for quite a while.

    • You’re going to need to tell me which of our recruits suck and who you would rather have instead of them. If we’re only talking about OL, then maybe we have a right to be disappointed. So I’ll grant anyone that position group for this incessant whining from the parade of weenies. But please do tell me who of the incoming really sucks.

      • I don’t think any of them suck. The point is a lot of people are hung up on the class ranking like that directly translates to how good the team will be. If that’s the case then yes, we’re screwed. But if not, there’s no reason to worry about it.

        • I’m asking for someone to try to justify these stupid ratings. You reinforce them by saying we need better rated players in order to win more unless GA can do more with less.

So you’re going to have to tell me how much less we’re actually getting. Or you have to justify the ratings systems. Since there is no way in any reality you can do the latter you’ll have to do the former.

    • You do need better players but the players GA is getting can get you more than 4 wins in my opinion. With this level of recruiting I think he can win 7-9 games relatively consistently. But if we want those 10+ win seasons he will need to recruit better athletes.

I believe getting 7-9 wins will result in recruiting better athletes.

        • I think they could with McM but that wasn’t the point I was making. The point I was making was with recruiting in the 40th range they can win 7-9 games consistently. Riley did for most of his tenure, obviously they need to do better at evaluating the QB position.

  17. The late switches in recruiting have put a negative feel on some pretty good developments.
Getting some highly rated in state kids. # FTD
Getting some very good kids out of traditional recruiting areas is CA. MR had pretty much given up those areas his last couple classes.
    Re-establishing a foothold in Hawaii.
Keeping the pipeline to Chandler going.
Playmakers at WR, some big and some small, shifty types.
GA now has to sell wins and not a vision going forward. Go Beavs!

  18. It ain’t over until it’s over. The kids can say what they want but it all boils down to which letters come out of the fax machine in a few days.

While wishing things had gone better (according to me naturally :-)) I am impressed with how this coaching staff managed to receive consideration from kids that are more ‘top tier’ than what I’m used to.

If the coaches don’t run out of gas (the way Riley did) and the team can start putting up some wins then, imo, things will get better.

The only thing I can think of that was good about the Riley days was I didn’t even bother to follow recruiting until the letters were in. Less stressful but very boring when compared to this year.

  19. Welcome to the world of Crootin’:
There are going to be ups and there are going to be downs. The key is to not get too down and don’t get to up when follow all of which are hard to do because we all have that competitive fire.

Remember SHurod Thompson, they can be heavily recruited talent but if they can’t make it in all it means is an “inflated” recruiting ranking.

Here are some things to remember,
Most of these 25ish kids are just that kids. MOST will not play at all next year, rather they will need to develop for a year and learn the system and adjust to not being the best player on the team anymore.

You can say what you want about rating services, but this year more then most shows just how different the services can be. How can you trust services that don’t even rank all the recruits (which I don’t expect them to due to the sheer numbers). The difference between many of these players “ratings” are not separated by much. But because some players are identified early on the process they garner more attention.

Film don’t lie, but it doesn’t tell the truth either. Look most of these tapes on these kids are their best highlights and doesn’t what they do on every down or when they don’t have a play called in their direction. Sometimes competition may lead to phenom highlights. Sometimes these kids will change position at the college level so their tape shows you nothing at what they can do about with learning a new position.

This staff has shown they are not afraid to compete with other programs, but they are a little limited on what they can sell. Which made this past season very important, and I said last year that they needed to “some wins” to backup the message they are indeed growing. They got those in four wins and it shows in how they did in this years class. More wins are going to necessary to take even another step forward.

It will be tough to compete with traditional recruiting powers. This makes next season a very important season. Need to improve on our wins total, and show more growth in the program to go along with the finished construction of facilities. I think 8 wins should be the goal (that might be a tall order given the schedule). Why is next season so important? The state of Oregon is going to be loaded with big time recruits. We need to lock down some of those kids to improve the talent pool. THere are other national recruits like Carmon Davis (one time commit), alot of these kids are better then what we recruited this year.

  20. Now we just gotta seal it up with George Moore and Falaniko. Although it’s still a long shot but would round out the class well.

  21. Honest question- did the #TraJonToCorvallis campaign a few months ago play into this? Seems to me that that’s what got us on the radar. Pretty cool to potentially boost recruiting as a fan.

    • responding to the question of whether the social media campaign helped cajole Trajon Cotton to Corvallis: we’ll never know for sure unless some member of the “mainstream media” poses the question on Wednesday or thereafter.

But more generally, efforts like that are to be encouraged, so long as they stay bounded by good sense and civility. The way I look at it, the relative strengths of football program are based on a few key variables. Probably most important is tradition. OSU doesn’t have much of one; indeed, few P5 programs have less tradition; Kansas comes to mind, maybe Iowa State, Indiana, possibly Northwestern.

Next most important: financial resources. This isn’t an OSU strong point either. And to state the obvious, Phil Knight single handedly gave the UO program this advantage, as the Ducks didn’t have much winning tradition either.

The third variable is facilities and as a corollary, geography. Though facilities might be thought of as a subset of financial strength, the architectural design, setting, and other largely aesthetic or atmospheric variables can spur success. Warm weather, for example, is a distinct advantage which you can see play out, for example, with what the Arizona schools do.

Lastly, the fourth factor is what I’d call fan enthusiasm. Ordinarily this takes the form of game day in-stadium vibe or energy. Probably not sufficient to completely compensate for deficiencies in the first three categories, it is the only one that people like those of us who populate this site can control. Turning out for the games, cheering, yelling, yes even booing, is important. Empty seats are a program killer and this was Riley’s greatest failing late in his career, with a pattern of early season losses, especially to FCS teams, that just simply took the air out of the OSU balloon.

Thus, to get back to the original question, social media boosterism is without question helpful in my estimation.

      • Well put. It’s the reason I’ve continued to keep the whole @beavrecruiting thing going. Even if it has helped a little, it’s worth it.
That being said, I can’t do it indefinitely. Still looking for somebody or somebodies who would be willing to step in for awhile. It’s actually pretty fun and you get to see things from a new perspective, and you might just help your team out at the same time.

  22. I had a feeling Cotton was leaning toward Colorado. So excited that he chose the Beavers. His offer sheet was not too shabby either. Awesome to see we snagged both Hodgins and Cotton from the TMP mafia. Should definitely help with recruiting down the road. TMP produces alot of D1 talent.

  23. Just curious, does anyone know if GA ever landed a 5 star recruit at Wisconsin? I’m not that hung up on the star system, I mean Kearsley was 4 stars and couldn’t break into the starting line up last year. Seems like GA and staff have found a lot of players with “good bones”. The 2016 team was so much better than 2015. I think it’s good things ahead. The issue is going to be how does he get from 7-9 wins to elite. That’s when you need a couple of these differences makers every recruiting class.

  24. Seems like Ah Hoy will be a Beav.

So we have Moore, Falaniko, and (serious longshot) Falo as possibilities?

And Tanis Joseph is probably in play if we don’t get Moore?

  25. I was out all day. Nice to come home to the Cotton commit.
To me his film is impressive…mostly his ball skills and awareness. The QBs in that league look awful, though, so it’s hard to deduct too much.

    • His ball skills really stand out, but his ability to tackle the ball and take it away are pretty impressive too… if those aren’t included in ball skills. He looks like he hits the sweet spot for leverage on tackles instead of going for the home run hit. Since he keeps his head up and hits squarely, he has a more opportunities to make those plays.

  26. Just got home from womens game. 13 straight over the ucks and a great crowd. Gill was rocking. Rueck is a great coach and gives OSU an edge. Weise is clutch and the crowd loves her and this team. Great job ladies!!!!!!

      • I’d bet you the duck slideshow is free of typos and it more well written.
I like how yesterday, within seconds of George Moore tweeting his new Oregon offer, Andrew had a new tweet out saying “Big offer, might be a game changer for him.”
Were all of his other offers considered lesser?
And then seconds after that, there’s a “4* JC OL George Moore says he will make his announcement Tuesday”

Somehow the “3*” guys for Oregon State become “4*” when the same player is featured in a duck story.
Bruce Judson as well, is a 3* on most sites, bit on Rivals he’s 4. So in O-live stories hes a 4*.
Moore is 3* on rivals but 4 on scout, so they go with the scout ranking in that case. Always best case scenario.

Every Oregon tweet has an extra level of excitement and enthusiasm. It’s no wonder fans get on his ass

  27. I don’t watch a lot of WBB (none outside of the Beavs), but is Weise the best offensive guard in NCAA history? She has the PAC 3 point record, right? Hard to imagine anyone better offensively other than maybe some bigs. I’m too lazy to look up all-time lady ncaa stats.

    • Wow you really don’t pay attention. Um the beavs played, now the #3 all time scorer in the NCAA a few weeks ago. Kelsey plum at UW. So no.

Wiese would get more accolades if she played at a historical program like UConn.

  28. Syd is a little limited athletically, but my god does she max out her abilities and she is the definition of clutch and a great leader. That was one hell of a performance yesterday. She willed her team to victory.

  29. Angry mentions above that Morris looks more like a safety than LB. Scout article confirms coaches moving him to S to start out:
    http://www.scout.com/college/oregon-state/story/1734808-visit-report-morris-talks-position-move

and ANemec mentions possible move to offense. anyone know what that would be (haven’t been paying attention)? http://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2017/01/prediction_will_oregon_state_b.html#incart_river_index

    • I completely buy Morris at RB.
      http://www.hudl.com/video/3/4192855/5800550abd75201174dde9cd

Why hasn’t this been discussed before? He looks better than anyone else we’ve been chasing as a pure runner. And he has a frame that can add some good weight.

If we get Ah-Hoy (who will never escape his destined nickname wherever he goes), I think he projects better as a future LB. So moving Morris out of a crowded DB group and into a role in which he can be highly productive makes sense.

But then I wonder abut the need for Baylor. Morris, Allen and Tyler fill all the roles with varying skills. Baylor looks like a project compared to them.

  30. Hey nicebeav nemec thinks we take ah hoy and are done. Is this what u think? I figured we they take 26 since bowcutt is a mission kid.

    • Looks like it will finish off that way, unless we can close on Moore between now and tomorrow.
Doesn’t make sense to use one more scholarship unless we’re getting a player we really want. Who knows, there could be someone who becomes available in the summer and we’d wish we had one more open spot to use.
Falanino and Grren were the remaining question marks besides Moore, and it looks like Green to OleMiss and Falaniko to oregon as well.

It’s funny that oregon is working so hard to bring in guys osu had been recruiting all year. Shows that the programs really aren’t that far apart.

        • I’m not following your question.
Are you asking which recruiting coach on each staff is chasing these kids?(and who is beating who?)
I think at this point, youre dealing with the entire staff vs the other team’s entire staff. Where we might have started with a pisition coach covering a handful of athletea, now we’re down to the last 2-3 spots in a class, so there are more resources available to devote to the effort( given the rest if the class is in maintenance mode)

I also think losing Brennan played a role in losing Green. That was his guy, and after he left, we decided to really focus more on our wide receiver corp. The message that probably semt to green was that our offense will not feature as much running plays, and less opportunities to get carries as a result.
Utah could then exploit that when going in to sell their offense over ours (although i wouldnt necessarily say eastern was known for their run game these past couple of years.)

          • “wouldnt necessarily say eastern was known for their run game these past couple of years.” Assuming you mean Eastern Washington and you are referring to Troy Taylor – 1) Taylor coached at EWU for only one year and 2) I tuned in to Eastern’s semi-final game for the FCS championship. They hardly ran at all.

          • Head to head, we won Hodgins, Morris and Cotton, although they would say they stopped recruiting, which is why we won.
Regardless, all 3 had Oregon offers at some point in time, and all 3 visited their campus.

Judson on the other hand chose Oregon. Our chances were slim

Falaniko is another head to head.

Neither team ended up with Moses Carr.

Not sure if I’m missing any other head to heads.

Safe to say, we held our own.

      • I think it speaks to the evaluations of the current OSU staff. They’ve identified several of these kids early before they get lots of attention then others come in and start offering.

      • My suspicious mind has me wondering if Taggart really wants those recruits or if he is just trying to show up the Beavs. The guys that Andersen discovers rarely stick with OSU. Does that alert other programs for the poaching? It’s an interesting game.

  31. Anyone want to speculate on next years starting offensive line? Below is my best guesstimate based on who is returning. Please weigh in.

Tackles – Brandel and Sumner Houston

Guards – Lauina and Lavaka (hopefully Delp improves)

Center – Demogerontas?? ( he did have some bad snaps last year. Alternatives?)

  32. Regarding uo trying to poach our recruits:
Glass half empty-GA cant close and we are in trouble (dont buy it)
Glass half full- Our recruits are solid and trolling duck staff, fans and nemec (I like this view better because it shifts the narrative from the little engine that could garbage to we want to take the fight to them kind of guys that GA has been looking for)

  33. Does oregon even have an offensive coordinator? Cristobal was the co-OC before the TE coach got canned. But Cristobal is an OL coach with zero OC experience.
    Is Taggert the defacto OC?
I dont see much OC experience on his resume other than 1 year as a co-oc about a decade ago.

Somebody needs to save Moore from their hypnosis.

    • Yeah it’s funny to see hole fan blabbering about the powerhouse “they” are going to be next year and they don’t even know what scheme they’ll be running.

  34. We are out of the running for Moore. Oregon is too.
Falaniko and Ah-Hoy are the two guys left up in the air for our remaining spots

    • It sounds like Falaniko hasn’t notified anybody where he’s going, so he’s up in the air still.
If USC is still recruiting him, I think he would land there first. Mostly because Samoan recruits are traditionally loyal to their verbal commitments.
If USC has backed off, then I think Oregon State/oregon is a toss up. Coach Salavea has a way with Samoan recruits, but at the same time, Oregon State has some solid Samoan ties. Elu helps for sure.

Ah-Hoy I believe is already a Beav, but I haven’t confirmed that with anybody. Not sure if his decision is pending the Falaniko outcome, or if they’re mutually exclusive.

  35. Extremely OT

I received a phone call earlier today from an acquaintance who said that there is a move underfoot to protest funding of OSU & boycott Beaver sports because of Ed Ray’s email yesterday regarding President Trump’s immigration policy.

Is this just a rumor or is there substance?

    • I don’t know what substance has to do with it since said immigration policy isn’t worth the paper it’s poorly written on.

But if you want to have some real fun you should try to convince people to start calling it a girlcott.

    • People don’t want to hear about politics on this board!!!

Really, how much of a boycott could get going? It’s no surprise that Ray disagrees with the order. Maybe in red states could there be significant damage.

      • It’s no surprise that anyone who reads the order and has a remedial knowledge of the law disagrees with the order. Have you read it? It’s abysmal and incompetent. And that’s before the court applies intent.

If you don’t want to read it, maybe all you need to know is that it’s 0-fer in the courts and will remain that way.

  36. More from Eggers, this time on Jason Phillips:

Andersen had never met Phillips. He found out about him during a coaching staff meeting in December.

“I presented to the coaches what I was looking for,” Andersen says.

Derrick Odum — then the OSU safeties coach, who later left to join Brennan as defensive coordinator at San Jose State — had coached with Phillips at Houston and SMU.

“‘DO’ said, ‘This guy’s a no-brainer,'” Andersen says. “It went from there.”

Andersen interviewed Phillips, “and our conversations were crisp and clear,” the OSU head coach says. “He’d done his homework on us. His coach at Kansas (David Beaty) didn’t want to lose him, but was complimentary and respectful to the move that Jason was making, which is always good to have happen. I followed my beliefs of what I want in a coach. Jason has proven already to be the right choice.”

Read the whole piece if you’ve got time, there is more there on his background, etc.
    http://pamplinmedia.com/pt/342654-221597-phillips-couldnt-pass-on-oregon-state

    EDIT: Added thoughts,
    1) Nice to see GA add a staff member he’d never met.

    2) Is it “orange colored glasses” or simply true that the staff at OSU is way more well rounded and solid than that group at phil’s place? All we hear about the toilet seat crew is their recruiting prowess… and their run ins with the law and the NCAA.

    3) Nemec’s latest slideshow concludes with a list of schools OSU beat out for at least one recruit this time around…some big names there.

  37. Garcia’s delayed eligibility is disappointing. It’s unclear – is he able to participate in spring ball & conditioning prior to gaining eligibility? Is this Kyle Peko 2.0? I’m not sure if I can handle another round of waiting for an online yoga grade with fingers crossed…

Angry- how does Falaniko being into his gf and mom make him a bad fit for Corvallis?

Not sure I’m a fan of the early spring ball this year. There’s a lot of potentially key players this year that will miss valuable development due to the early start. This includes all the guys arriving spring term: Sattelmaier, Evans, Cordasco, Short, maybe Lotu-Clark.

    • The good news is Garcia has been admitted to OSU and is currently taking classes. Andersen has a very good track record so far in helping students on campus maintain and get eligible. Peko’s situation should actually make you more optimistic. All the drama happened before Andersen. Andersen’s staff was able to help Peko buckle down and get eligible.

The early spring game has its benefits as well, allowing more effective recruiting by the staff and a 9 week training cycle for the new players coming in spring. This actually may be more important than spring practice, if you do not have the speed, agility, and strength developed then this needs to come first.

      • I think JC guys should be reasonably well conditioned already. Evans especially. I think for OL in particular learning scheme and getting reps are pretty critical. Either way they’d still have the summer to gain strength.

      • “Andersen’s staff was able to help Peko buckle down and get eligible.” And apparently Andersen’s staff knew enough to follow up with the compliance people at all levels. Riley & co were shameful. When asked by the media, they usually responded with a shrug & didn’t seem to know what was going on.

        • “Shameful” is not the word I would use. I mean c’mon, Peko was a 20 yr old adult who should have been able to figure out his academic requirements without handholding from the athletic department. And as far as his personal development goes, being allowed to fail teaches you way more than someone clearing all your hurdles for you.

I would say that Riley did himself and his team a disservice by not babysitting Peko and his grades. But I’d say Peko himself probably benefited. Just a different philosophy imo.

    • Nice find, thanks. Those long-term looks are instructive, and something other recruits should consider.

Also instructive for fans who tend to think that somebody is “can’t miss” or absolutely necessary to the program.

Interesting how many USC recruits did little to nothing in the NFL or CFL, highly ranked athletes at the WR and RB position, and never went far.

      And remember Myles Wade?

There is an article by Andy Staples on S-I that suggests that one of the most important recruiting factors for successful programs is finding players that fit the culture of the program. I just scanned it, but think its an interesting consideration.

  38. I really like what Eggers said about our coaches and their recruiting mind set ( http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/342650-222688-andersen-beavers-excited-about-great-group-of-recruits ):

“The staff worked extremely hard at identifying a really good core group of players,” Andersen said. “We got in a whole bunch of big-boy fights (for recruits). We didn’t win them all, but we won our fair share, which was great to see.

“We’re not afraid to look at a young man who doesn’t have the ‘stars.’ We evaluate on what we think fits at Oregon State. That brought us one young man who doesn’t have the opportunity to go to camps or any interest in social media, which are things that can get a kid on the map. We were lucky to find him.

“We weren’t afraid to take shots at the (highly rated players), but when we diagnosed them as not a fit for Oregon State, for Corvallis, for our football team, we weren’t afraid to move in another direction. It takes a mature staff to make those decisions.”

    • That is a good point, a lot of the higher rated recruits are really good self promoters which isn’t the best attribute for playing a team game. Not to say highly rated guys are bad, more to point out it is a balancing act.

    • “That brought us one young man who doesn’t have the opportunity to go to camps or any interest in social media, which are things that can get a kid on the map. We were lucky to find him.”

I like GA better all the time and I hope the young man becomes an All-American. That will be at least two players who aren’t on social media – this guy and Ryan Nall.

  39. I can’t wait for next week when the recruiting chatter stops :)

I don’t need to know how the sausage is made (but if it floats your boat that’s cool)

  40. I have a correction to make. Yesterday I was under the impression Moore was out for both Oregon schools. Turns out, I crossed wires with my contact. Mo Unutoa was the player that is no longer in the running for either Oregon school. Will end up at a Utah school.

I’m working to find out if Moore is still possibly in play.
Apologies for the false notice yesterday.

  41. Fair

McMaryion, who carried the load after Garretson and Blount were injured at midseason last year, will go into spring ball as the starter.

“Marcus will get the first snaps,” Andersen said. “I think it’s well-deserved.”

    But the job isn’t McMaryion’s.

  42. “We’re not afraid to look at a young man who doesn’t have the ‘stars.’ We evaluate on what we think fits at Oregon State. That brought us one young man who doesn’t have the opportunity to go to camps or any interest in social media, which are things that can get a kid on the map. We were lucky to find him.”

Who’s this? Aaron Short comes to mind as someone who should be ranked higher. BJ Baylor is another guy who might fit that description. I don’t love Baylor, but he looks serviceable and worth of a few stars.

“We weren’t afraid to take shots at the (highly rated players), but when we diagnosed them as not a fit for Oregon State, for Corvallis, for our football team, we weren’t afraid to move in another direction. It takes a mature staff to make those decisions.”

I wonder who he’s talking about, because Judson clearly wasn’t a good fit, yet they seemed to be recruiting him until the end.

    • Gardner fits the first description.

For the guy we moved on from, Calvin is who I thought he might be referring to.

Also, I saw Baylor was just upgraded to a 3* guy on Scout. He must have had a strong showing this weekend on his official visit……

    • I think both Baylor and Judson are/were fliers.

He’s probably talking about some of the highly rated PSAs who might have pledged then retracted. You never know what any one of them might have said or done on some social media format that any one of our staff saw and reported. Certainly not all or even most of them, but it seemed like the staff had zero interest in a couple guys who retracted.

Or he might be talking about PSAs like Daniel Green, since we can’t really afford any academic misses this cycle. Or maybe they got all hot and heavy over some star PSA who wanted to talk OSU, and the dude was just clearly not going to fit in GA’s system in terms of attitude or work ethic. Believe it or not, some of these PSAs are highly entitled.

    • A December signing period is a great idea. I actually think the idea of a summer signing period has merit as well. If a kid knows where they want to be let them get signed so they can enjoy their senior year but I understand the eligibility concerns.

Official visits as juniors is a great idea as well but really fits better if kids can sign in the summer.

      • I’ll buy it if the word offer was to mean every school has an equal commitment and allows the PSA to sign a grant-in-aid.

Make the offer mean something, then I’ll consider demeaning kids who only make a promise about the rest of their lives.

        • While by rule the schools aren’t allowed to do this unless that student athlete is enrolling early. This is why a December signing period is such a good idea.

  43. Looks like Jamire Calvin might flip to Washington State. Arex Flemings has an offer from there and they’ve wanted to play together in the past so that’s something to keep an eye on.

      • He retracted his pledge to OSU 3.5 weeks ago.

Regardless, I want odds on NU fans’ reactions.
        1. Didn’t want him anyway.
        2. His family was paid off.
        3. He must not have the _____ necessary to be successful at NU.
        4. He can go suck eggs.

      • Sounds like he wasn’t admitted to Nebraska.

Didn’t Angry question academic standing back when he first chose Oregon State?

Would suck if he pulled Flemings with him.
Might as well encourage him to come back here to boost our class standings, despite the risk he may never end up here

        • “Would suck if he pulled Flemings with him.
Might as well encourage him to come back here to boost our class standings…”

Or his mommy could arrange play dates in Corvallis with Arex…

    • Yup, posted here this morning.
Nice to see GA hire someone he hasn’t already worked with and a good insight into GA’s management style.

    • Sorry, didn’t see it. I only saw the Eggers piece I quoted above.

Seems like a very good find, and yes, great he’s not a Utah connection. I like the RB he found us in a pinch. Looks like a good player.

  44. This month included a brief commitment to Oregon State that was made on national television at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 7, before reopening his recruitment 10 days after that, before picking Nebraska over Washington State 10 days after that.

    From Lincoln paper….http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/football/husker-wr-commit-calvin-happy-to-be-where-i-am/article_14106cdc-5844-537d-8fb0-09b32ef9d1fa.html

In regards to that decommitment from Oregon State, Calvin said, “The coaches (there) had told me something they hadn’t before, which drew me away from them, and I would have never committed to them in the first place.”

He didn’t wish to specify what that was. “I wouldn’t like to say just out of respect to the school and the people over there. They’re still great people and great coaches.”

    • Maybe they wouldn’t promise him a starting spot? or that he was not guaranteed to play? Regardless, him now thinking about flipping AGAIN doesn’t do him any favors. The dude just likes attention. If he was not as highly rated, he might have found himself out of a spot on a team.

      When he “committed” to Nebraska:
“Calvin said he got a great reaction when he told Husker coaches the news. “It seemed like everybody went crazy, so it was a big deal. It was cool.”

I honestly hope he flips to WSU. Lol

      • I’d rather he not go to WSU b/c if he does turn out to be good, I don’t want him taking it out on coaches he’s upset with. Sounds like he might wind up in a JC anyway.

    • Probably that they were looking at JC WRs. Didn’t they sign Short right after Calvin?

Either way, glad we avoided this guy. He has trouble written all over him.

  45. This month included a brief commitment to Oregon State that was made on national television at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 7, before reopening his recruitment 10 days after that, before picking Nebraska over Washington State 10 days after that.

    From Lincoln Journal Star

In regards to that decommitment from Oregon State, Calvin said, “The coaches (there) had told me something they hadn’t before, which drew me away from them, and I would have never committed to them in the first place.”

He didn’t wish to specify what that was. “I wouldn’t like to say just out of respect to the school and the people over there. They’re still great people and great coaches.”

  46. Was Moore announcing tonight?
If he is already calling off the rabid fnbases, perhaps he is a silent beav commit all along and knows that outsiders will wonder “Why OSU?” just as they did with GA, and he is expecting a confused reaction. But what is best for him is playing time in a power run offense, and Beavs have it.

    • At one point he said “tuesday”, but then today he said “tomorrow”
      Not sure.
I like your optimism, but I just don’t have a good feeling it will be the result you’re hoping for.
      Feel slightly better about Falaniko

  47. I hope Moore signs with Beavs tomorrow just because it is annoying to see the ducks being late to the party and acting like it is the best offer in a recruits life. I’d like to think the gap is closer than that. Maybe Moore is more like Judson and Calvin than we think. Needs attention after all. I hope he comes to OSU though.

  48. Moore gets offered by ucks like 2 days ago, and the beavs offered him months ago and they still get him. Sure hope they crash and burn again this year on the field where it counts.

  49. No surprise, Gina (re)tweets:

Paul Lucas of Phoenix has transferred from Oregon State football to #ASU track and is immediately eligible because no track at OSU

    • I hope he does well. It’s too bad he couldn’t put on weight and retain speed. But it’s good for T&F to get another great athlete.
