The last thread was getting a bit stale, but there is lots worth discussing here. FB pratice starts, Baseball plays two, and WBB heads to Colorado, all on Friday. Oh yeah, MBB up 1 at the half vs Bisons at Gill. Lets treat this as a general thread, no need for a baseball series thread at this stage of the season (?).
ALERT: Baseball schedule change, double header Friday: radio only 9am and 1pm (pacific)
Tinkle needs to go. Complete collapse in final 90 seconds. Should not happen at home. Tinkle been taking sh*ts all season long. Would hope Barnes gives a thorough review of the MBB program starting in a couple weeks when the season is over and the team finishes 0-18 in conference and gets blown out in Vegas like we all know will happen.
So when should the AD expect your check to buy out Tinkle’s contract?
Go Beavs!
Big G got the ball 3 ft. from the basket and gets 3″ vertical, gets blocked, and Colorado comes down and gets a 3 out of it…ball game right there. Eubanks would have slammed it and got the foul probably. Pretty much a given now that the Beavs will finish 0-18 in conference. STj was MIA again, shot something like 2-12 and 0-7 from 3. McLaughlin had a decent game offensively but for every basket he scored, it seemed like he gave it back on the other end as the CO guards were beating him off the dribble consistently. Three more games to go and, mercifully, the bb season is over.
Colorado made some big-time shots down the stretch in that game, which is what one would like to see in Pac-12 basketball players.
Ahem, 5 more games.
I stand corrected, forgot about the Bay schools.
Are they going to finish with the worst record in pac history?
Yes, Tinkle will end with all time worst P5 team in the 120+ year history of the NCAA.
Yikes.
That is shocking. Somebody has to do it, but why Tinkle why now?
Lots of room for improvement! Hopefully he doesn’t start chewing gum and slouching…
I’m guessing you forgot about the final Jay John/Kevin Mouton team that went 0-18
Not forgetting about that team at all. This team has won two less games and is consistentlt losing by a larger margin than that team. This team has lost many games by 16-18 points or worse. I wouls say they are losing by about 7 or 8 more points a game then that John team which most of us figured would be about the worst we would ever see. Then Tinkle goes out and not only is to be worst Oregon State team of all time but also worst P5 team in the history of the NCAA. A total sh*tfest of a team. Offense ranked 961th in the NCAA over all divisions. That must be worse than 90% of D4 teams to be that low. Just horrendous.
All that to save a few 100K or so compared to Howland. Beavs would atleast look like a P5 program if Howland was coach. Beavers are this bad right now & only without one player in Tres. Looks like GP2 was nearly 90% responsible for last year. Defensive effort is nowhere close with him gone and the offense has nosedived even worse.
lol. D-4?? I never heard of D-4. Learned something new.
I’m guessing D4 is club level?
and that team also didn’t lose players to injuries and leaving the program. It’s really hard for me to take you even remotely seriously with a username like that.
1. There is zero chance Tinkle gets fired for one bad year
2. Even if he were, there is zero chance Mark Few would take the Oregon St head coaching job. Few has stated he loves it in Spokane and has already rebuffed interest from ANYONE from a P5 conference that called. He isn’t going anywhere.
Look at it this way. Beavs are having the season everyone thought they would in Tinkle’s first year. Get over it, move on for next year. If they are this bad again next year? Then I guess your argument would have some legs. I can’t recall a coach that got canned after one awful season. Unless he was coaching at some blueblood like UCLA, UNC or Kansas. And in case no one told you? Oregon St isn’t a blueblood basketball school.
“I can’t recall a coach that got canned after one awful season.”
Hi
We’re talking about hoops, not football. Nice try
If they lose out then maybe in terms of win percentage. There was another Beaver team in the late 90’s that only won four games but played fewer overall and they won 2 in conference.
There was a Beaver team that lost to Montana-Billings during non-conference play and it was a counting game, not an exhibition, I’m thinking it was that other 4 win team.
So, the baseball team will play a double header Friday due to bad weather expected for Saturday. Does this present any unexpected opportunities/problems?
If Adley starts at C as we have expected, does he play both games or does KJ move over? Gretler? Seems like a load for a brand new C to start out with a doubleheader.
Jon Warren will have the p-b-p; over/under on how often he explains the technical problems he is dealing with in producing the broadcast?
Any idea of the strengths of Duke and Indiana?
GO BEAVS!
EDIT–ADDED: A little research shows Indiana listed on the way too early field of 64 by D1 Baseball. They’re (Indiana) picked as the #3 seed in the Conway regional. FWIW
Hey thanks for making the thread for it. I just logged in to do that.
Gina’s interview with Baldwin.
Need more numbers at TE (I asked that in a recruiting thread – it seemed like an area of need), “But there’s not a more talented, athletic tight end in this conference than Noah.”
Not going to run hand the ball off much this spring, going to work on the passing game…Hodgins “explosive.”
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/02/theres_not_a_more_talented_ath.html#incart_2box
Yeah, I was a little disappointed in Gina’s non-answer to my question about Baldwin’s contributions(?) beyond his formal job as TE coach.
If they’ll use him, I do think Togiai could be a factor. Still need depth behind him.
Gina’s “Ten Story Lines” for spring FB practice provides a bit of a refresher for fans who’ve been mesmerized by Men’s Basketball!
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/02/10_storylines_to_watch_as_oreg.html#incart_2box
Mesmerized or stupefied? Or both?
I read that, Gina gave a political answer. To me the question is, Gina, why the fuck doesn’t Dave mind these apparent “demotions” and what is his true role? My guess is that he gets along with everyone and is on the downside side of his career so he’s content with what he’s been given. Kind of like a Dennis Ericksen light when he was at Utah.
I’m guessing these demotions aren’t really that at all. While his role diminishes as a position coach, his visibility in recruiting and dealing with the team has increased. And that’s despite him moving around and any negative recruiting that follows. I’m guessing his value to this team is that he’s the old ball coach. He’s been there, done that. So he’s accessible to everyone for any kind of counsel needed, from game-planning to innovation to life in general.
That value along with his recruiting abilities make his pay worth at least equal to a dedicated special teams coach, imo.
I would say Coach K is like that on the D side. The only difference being his coaching career is waxing, not waning.
I’d say both of their careers are waning….
Coach K looks like head coaching material to me.
For now…
I thought it was interesting that they wanted to run hurry up with togiai in.
Worst basketball team in the past what, 30 years? Wasn’t expecting much this season, but possibly winless in conference is unacceptable. Flat out.
So, who thought the football team would win as many games as the men’s basketball team this year?
Maybe Malcom did?
Also the 2nd youngest team with the fewest actual D1 players in the nation. It is beyond me that there isn’t any push for longer athletes and a true wizard ball handling pg.
Guys to build around: Drew, STJ, Tres, JaQuori, Manuel, Big G. ; Add Ethan amd Reichle and now you have 4 spots to fill, Kone isn’t explosive enough to compete at Pac12 level and is undersized like everyone else, but effort is good. That leaves 3 spots to be filled by someone other than a walk-on undersized non shooting foul machine.
Mueller, Sanders, Stacy, should not see the floor. Where are the big guys? Where is the point guard? Why do they trade 6′ 8″ for 6′ 4″ at each forward position? I am concerned about the evaluation of talent at this point. Who is the recruiting evaluator on staff? Do they have a tough time adjusting and identifying from the Montana caliber athlete needed to win vs the Pac12 caliber needed to win?
I’m not sure where you get Kone as an undersized player. His issues right now are atrophy on the left side of his body and that he’s carrying far too much bad weight. If you can’t deduce he might be that way because that’s what happens when you blow out a knee and get to rehab on your own using high school facilities. He will come back next year with a very different body. He will be smaller, and he will still not be undersized.
Yeah, Kone is listed at 6’8″, granted players are typically shorter than their listed height but that is not bad for a college PF. His wingspan looks pretty legit too. I haven’t watched the Beavers at all this year so I don’t know what to make of him but often times the first year after a major surgery is recovery and the second year is getting back to your old self. Combine that with the major adjustment to the new competition level and it is no surprise he is struggling. I think the key will be where he is at mentally, if he is willing to put in the work it seems he can be a decent player.
“Do they have a tough time adjusting and identifying from the Montana caliber athlete needed to win vs the Pac12 caliber needed to win?” I think you have something there. And, as illustrious as his Montana playing career was, it was still Montana. There was/is only one Larry Krystowiak – the only coach to have won a NCAA tournament game at Montana.
I think they will be a .500 team with Tres back, but how can you count on him being healthy when the facts show otherwise? He’s played in less than half the scheduled games so far in his two year career. Also, I don’t see where STj is a top 100 player, he’s a turnover machine and struggles to get his shot off and when he does it’s usually some funky looking thing. Manuel is a 10 minute spot up three player, Kone looks like a marginal P-12 player, but maybe gets better as he gets on the other side of his injury.. I’m kind of down to hoping that Ethan Thompson is a difference maker and Malcom returns to add some defense and toughness to the team. Even next year, they seem to be an injury away from disaster again.
because he’s playing out of position much of the time. A PG he is not. The continued development of McLaughlin and return of Duvivier would help alleviate this problem.
He still seems to be injury-prone…
I have only watched 1 game start to finish this year(Pilots game, live)
To me, Jaquori did not look like a PG. He looked more like a 2 or a small 3 to me. Maybe it was just youth showing, but I’d almost rather see him as the 3 next year, with STJ at the 2. And then we neeeeeed to get either Duvivier, or some magical grad transfer who can distribute and play D to start at the point next year.
I feel like this starting lineup would at least win a few pac12 games next year.
1-Duvivier or transfer
2-STJ with ET backup
3-Jaquori
4-Tres
5-Eubanks
This is just my snapshot assessment of the team based off very little data or desire to even look at the mbb team.
I’ve watched quite a few of the last several games and he has improved over the course of the season. IMO, another overseas trip during the summer where they can continue to play together and not scrimmaging against each other would be extremely helpful into continuing development (they did this a few years ago under CR).
I forced myself to watch the whole game. I have a hard time thinking it will get significantly better next year. Issues are length and quickness.
Tinkle Jr comes back. He is a tweener with skills of a 3, but a limited athlete. Couple inches taller and he is a great 4. Two major bone related injuries that have had healing problems. Physiologically that is odd with a young person. Can he stay healthy?
STjr has been a huge disappointment this year. He is a complimentary player at best, and is another limited athlete. How is that possible with his dad’s genes?
Drew E is the only guy on the team that is a plus athlete who is generally better athletically than the guy guarding him. He still makes a lot of fundamental errors, but has an upside.
QM needs to work on ball handling. His trip and Curley Neal impersonation cost them a chance to win the game last night.
The two kids coming in seem pretty good, but they are sorely lacking some size at the 3 and a ball handler. If Tinkle does not pull an Altman and get a grad transfer or plug and play Juco for next year
we may be looking for a new coach. He really screwed the pooch this year with the Jucos.
What a depressing season after last year.
I saw this with BYU when I lived in Utah, they had a 1-25 season at the end of the Roger Reid era about 20 years ago, I don’t remember the exact circumstances, but it took them 4 or 5 years to get back to post season play. Roger Reid didn’t survive that season and he was a respected coach. I’m not saying Tinkle needs to go, but he’s dug himself a big hole and I don’t see them getting back to the NCAAs anytime soon. I’m already starting to think that GP-2 was a one of kind college player and I’m thankful he helped break the tourney drought.
GP2 wasn’t that special. This is all coaching. Maybe it’s that the coaches are friends with the team, not coaches. Maybe it’s the system Tinks runs. But what I see is a team that doesn’t run, pass and give smart effort on D.
The first thing every team needs to do is run. I don’t know why that seems out of line with some hoops coaches. Just because you can run doesn’t mean you need to become a run and gun team. You should be able to run and gun when you get that opportunity, because those are easy points. But even if you’re strictly a half-court offense, you still need to run. You just choose to run back on D instead of out on O.
I agree with your assessment of the defense. In the first year, Tinkle took a bunch or rag tags and nobodies and they led the Pac in many defensive categories. I also am not seeing that effort from the players this season. Playing defense is all about effort. Don’t want to play defense? Well, there’s the bench. Unfortunately they don’t have that luxury this year unless you want to play a bunch of walk ons with a limited skill set.
If the walk-ons can play D, put them out there. The people who don’t want to play D can watch their team lose from the bench.
Then maybe they’ll understand what the rest of see.
Oh, and Eubanks STILL needs to add some muscle. Sorry, but eating 16 eggs a day isn’t going to help you from getting pushed around under the basket by bigger dudes. Hit the weight room and leave the buffet line for Lindsay.
I didn’t get to listen to the whole segment, but it sounds like there was a story yesterday about Jim Harbaugh planning to hire the dad of the #1 2019 Dual Threat QB, and Paul Finebaum called him out as being a cheater (even though, technically, it’s not cheating to hire family members of potential recruits, duh…)
Then, on 1080thefan, a local radio host asked duck fans what they though of it, and what if their team did something similar. Everybody was ragging on Harbaugh, calling him a slimeball/cheater/etc.
Fast forward to this morning, and apparently the dad isnt going to Michigan. He’s going to Oregon to join Taggert’s staff.
DoSomething, duck fans…..
Also, fyi, hiring dads for their kids doesnt always work
The hypocrisy of duck fans starts in 5-4-3-2-………….
Wouldn’t it need to have ended in the past for it to start again?
Correct, but I mean this one subject.
Meh… that passes as rational thought nowadays.
Just out of curiosity, is Rueck grooming anybody for HC, somebody that might continue his program quality? And could Rueck then coach OSU MBB?
Anyone found a way to listen to baseball other than through the OSU site? It isn’t on KEJO.
I see the teams twitter has at least one short video clip of the action.
From what I’ve heard, Jon Warren is doing OK–for the first game.
The game itself? Scoreless through 5, Heimlich with 10 K’s has given up 3 hits.
Donahue starting in LF, Grenier at 2B and Gretler at 3rd.
CF and RF?
CF=Cary
RF=Kwan
Cool… thanks.
It will be interesting to see how or if the line-up changes for the second game.
Jake T coming in with two on. Ruh row.
Good ‘ol dependable Jake T., disposes of the one batter he faces and steps aside for Jake Mulholland who puts ’em down in order in the t7. Jake Tcould actually get the W today!
On to the b7, Beavs up 1-0 thanks to a double by Donahue with Kwan on 3rd in the 6th.
When he threw two straight balls to start………..oh well you know.
Got him right where he wanted him! Masterful!
since the OSU site appears now to be a pay site (can anyone confirm that?) I’m listening on tune-in. KKNX in Eugene normally has Beav games on but they didn’t this morning. The early start may have been the reason. haven’t checked to see if they are streaming the second game
Yeah, I listened to the first game on Tune-in through the OSU site without any payment required.
When I checked Tune-in directly for KEJO the game wasn’t on; there have been other times in the past where the KEJO via Tune-in didn’t match the over the air broadcast. That seems to be the situation today as I’m now getting the second game over the air on KEJO. A problem since KEJO over the air has a very limited range.
Checked again just now, KEJO via Tune-in isn’t broadcasting the game but KEJO over the airwaves is. Again, no help for those who aren’t fairly close to Corvallis.
So I’m guessing we need to put a man on first before we trot out that closer guy with a one run lead in the ninth?
Too late Nate. Thinking the same. WTF?
Good guys win, 1-0. Jake Thompson gets credit for the W!
Jake Mulholland seemed to have a confidence building outing, faced 8 batters gave up one hit.
Mulholland should have faced six batters with no hits.
A lot of key players out for spring ball. Full list here:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C44wpMEVcAAHxXj.jpg
Wow.
What the f*ck do these guys do in the offseason to get so banged up?? Are they in Fight Club?
What’s fight club?
Rules are meant to be broken.
what rules?
D line-up for the second game:
1. Fehmel
2. Harrison
3. Taylor
4. Grenier
5. Gretler
6. Madrigal
7. Donahue
8. Atwood
9. Larnach
Kwan is in there. He is one of those guys with low batting avg that Casey shouldn’t play. Must be a good field player.
Maybe that batting avg will change this year, went 3 for 5 today, getting 25% of the teams hits for the two games.
Don’t overlook his ability to bunt as a factor giving him playing time.
Yes, glad he is hitting well….gotta let em play if they have the hot bat.
Fehmel gives way to Britton after 6+ innings, 79 pitches. Allowed 8 hits, 2 runs.
Good guys up 6-2 despite being outhit 8-6.
Now 6-3…..Beavs really fortunate to be ahead by 3 runs in this game — Duke stranding 7 to Beavs 3. Need to get some more insurance runs.
Beavs win.
?Titus F an Kalani V not on first two D teams? During first practice.
?Are we goin with 2-4 defense??
Just a head’s up for all you “retards” out there…..
http://heatst.com/tech/twitters-new-tool-to-crack-down-on-politically-incorrect-language/
TWITTER’S NEW TOOL TO CRACK DOWN ON POLITICALLY INCORRECT LANGUAGE
Twitter has launched a new way to punish users for bad behavior, temporarily “limiting” their account.
Some users are receiving notices their accounts are limited for 12 hours, meaning only people who follow them can see their tweets or receive notifications. When they are retweeted, people outside their network can’t see those retweets.
Some speculate these limitations are automatic based on keywords, but there is no hard evidence.
This would be fine if this was used uniformly to clamp down on harassment, but it appears to be used on people, simply for using politically incorrect language.
Take for example the Twitter user @Drybones5 who got his account limited after using the word “retarded.”
Yet you can still take a picture of your crank and post it for all to see, with no ramifications.
Except eye strain from the squinting.
Hmmm… does ramification mean the same as blowback?
Someone should write a tweet about how their jeans retarded fire and see how twitter reacts.
So I can’t tell all my tweet peeps that I just retarded the timing on my Nova to get rid of the knocking???
For sure, and don’t even think about telling them how you balanced and lubed the crank!
So… I see no evidence of this. Someone just ran a ton of obscene crap at another friend who has a lot of crap directed her way as a test.
Nothing.
Liar.
@drybones5 looks like a tool, but he doesn’t look like his life has been disrupted in any way.
Thanks for that 10 minute venture into stupidity.
So I have to ask if you really want to start talking about privacy and free speech and politics.
?
I’ll wait.
forever
something about vigilance and honor and whatever…
yup
If you know this feeling, you know this feeling.
If you don’t know this feeling, thanks for trying to cut your own taxes first.
If you put a flag pin on your lapel, that makes everything you don’t feel real.
ZERO FUCKING HONOR!!!!!!
That is what I know when you speak.
You need not worry about the font or the case (?) of your post. You don’t even need to worry about the content.
It’s not yours.
But good luck trying to prove that what other people think is what you think… without using their words.
Because that’s the mark of a free thinker.
You!
You, Mud& Sticks… you provided real stupidity to the world.
You!
You should be ashamed of yourself and ask all who inhabit your world forgiveness.
You won’t. You’re a shallow enough person to have bleated that lie in the first place.
But I think I’ve provided enough words for you to take to a dictionary in order to understand just what you are in the scheme of things.
shame
You morons were really going to try a soft attack on social media on a Friday?
And by “you morons” I mean the people who made up the crap lies you other people are so willing to believe so they could follow them into the cracks of whatever lily-livered fear they need to be.
I thought Jon Warren did okay doing the double header. He had a technical problem at the outset, which oneoldbeav cannily predicted, but for a first timer it was a good effort. I know a lot of people get on Parker’s case here but the contrast between him and a first timer shows how polished Mike is by comparison. Parker’s main deficiency is letting his emotions get the best of him. The network threw Jon a lifeline by teaming him up with Hank Heger (sp?), the baseball SID, for the second game. Having an interlocutor relaxed Jon quite a bit and filled some of the dead air witnessed during the first game. For a guy who had never done baseball before it was a creditable effort. and to draw a doubleheader out of the gate, yeeesh.
Awww schucks, predicting Jon Warren to have (and talk about) technical problems is nearly as sure a thing as calling for the ‘ol gum chewer to take a TO or two into the locker room!
Agree, Heger was a bright spot. Not Jim Wilson caliber, but certainly a welcome addition to the broadcast today.
And just in case there are any ……… out there…..
The days of free speech appear to be numbered, eh?
http://www.legitgov.org/Facebook-algorithms-will-identify-terrorists
Facebook algorithms ‘will identify terrorists’
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has outlined a plan to let artificial intelligence (AI) software review content posted on the social network. In a letter describing the plan, he said algorithms would eventually be able to spot terrorism, violence, bullying and even prevent suicide political dissenters.
Why do I have a feeling that by “terrorists” they mean “politically incorrect White people”?
*Jack batshit crazy signal*
I’m not going to click on a link that says “legitgov” at any time. A Rickroll would be enjoyable compared to what I think happens after that site sees me.
So why don’t we just talk about why all these dumb fucks are talking about big bad social networks taking away their sky deity given right to do something other than tell the truth?
You bleating hearts are just dumb.
Right now they’re attacking the media. I guess that includes FB and twitter. I don’t know how they think they can deligitimize twitter. But they think they can do it. More power to them… I guess.
It is a little boring… even for a soft tyrant. Can we get someone who doesn’t recall his electoral count when asked about anti-semitism?
need some proof, little liar
frt… terrorist usually means someone who will first make you get a divorce so you can follow your hedonistic ways and lay (lie?) with young sweaty boys and make them get abortions… or something.
You can pick your own irrational fears so long as they comply with the over-arching vision of nobody you ever think was your big brother… and probably isn’t anyway.
verb tense could use a little work… I blame the last two weeks of lousy grammer on an associate.
Dude does not believe English is a valid form of communication.
Any day scotty. We’re breathlessly awaiting your reclassification of this lie as something which paints you in a good light… you think. Prove what you said or be tossed on the pile of… well… you.
you underestimated… not that you estimated in the first place
Then, don’t use Facebook.
It seems the overlords are playing with the bleating hearts tonight.
Their freedumbs didn’t go away when the PATRIOT Act was made law. A coordinated lie about private social media companies is what made them feel all snowflake about their existence.
This has to be the stupidest counterculture ever. Ignatius J Reilly has to move on over.
Once they catch the twitter, what do they think they will do with the twitter?
Yeah it’s pretty simple.
Lady Beavs up 7 at CO with 8 minutes left.
Could be a nice day for all the Beavs if they finish the W.
16 TO’s and 30% FT, same old story and the game is closer than it should be. Good game by Marie and Kolbie.
1pt lead with 3.5min to go.
It looks like they’re going to pull it out thanks to great rebounding.
UW loses to UCLA at Pauley, so UW is a game back now. If the Beavs can finish the road trip clean, then they hold the conference regular season in their grasp IF they can beat Stanford and Cal at home . Sure would have been nice to get the W against USC. Maybe our friends in Eugene will knock off Stanford too, which is actually not that far–fetched and take some pressure off that last home series.
Lady Beavs win. 51-30 rebounding advantage. 54-49 final.
Good day for the Beavs.
Good day for the Beavs. I was in Boulder, and made it a point to go the wbb.. Colorado’s Kennedy Leonard is special. I think the word is out to pressure, pressure, pressure the Beavs. I haven’t looked at the stats, but the outside shots didn’t seem to be falling. I thought team looked pretty rough although the bigs played well.
Coors venue is cavernous. Sure didn’t have the feel of Gill although there weren’t a lot of people there either.
BTW – Boulder doesn’t have an airport, either and getting to Corvallis from PDX or Eugene is imo better than DIA t.o Boulder.
We’ve had the discussion about the ride from DIA to Boulder, and everyone who thinks I’m a moron disagrees with you because of something like six minutes… on a good day.
It’s really not worth the discussion.
You assume I am referring only to length of time for each trip. That’s a factor, but imo, going anyplace from DIA is hideous; dry, brown, & how many more factory-style apartment houses can they build along the way? (lots, apparently), plus miles of industrial sites. There’s more, but I’ll leave it there.
DIA is a huge upgrade over Stapleton.
So there’s that.
Yeah bubba… you know where it’s at.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNV16tz1NK0
Now I have to go play some Marc Broussard and Chris Stapleton.
See what you started… you who first pumped the dumb lies about social media (not just the dishonest media) making your lives total hells of politeness?
Oh… how we must now suffer your stupidity just to get back to mediocrity!
So… anyone of you bleating hearts have evidence of this wide ranging conspiracy of private companies making you be polite?
I don’t get how anyone could downvote Sturgill… probably a bunch of Luke Bryan fans.
Luke Bryan wishes he could play a guitar like Sturgill.
Wave the flag. Thank me for my service as if your thanking me is a service to me.
That’s a good boy.
Jack batshit crazy signal works everytime
I’m easy.
Ask anyone.
Besides, I have to wait for these tinfoil hat blurbs from the echo chamber of lunkheads screeching about how life is soooooo unfair to them. Since we’re in a completely irrational and reactionary world now, I have to save my WTF incredulity for these starkly stupid crescendos in the already knee-deep stupidity of it all.
It’s hard to focus on the really really stupid when the bar has been set this low. It’s sensory overload.
Is fb team gonna run a 2-4 scheme???
That practice report put up by Gina was difficult to interpret, for me at least. As I understand it, she only sees a few minutes of action and then can’t/won’t give precise info on every combination of players on the field. Yet there is enough time to identify a first and second unit.
Anyway, she did say, “Some packages also featured Pritchard, Vakameilalo and Titus Failauga (who is back at defensive end).” that seemed to be in conjunction with Aydon and Pritchard who, apparently, were in every “package”. With Evans coming in the Fall, I think the Beavs are stocked with enough to play the 3-4.
Although, the linebacker crew could be strong and deep enough to make a 2-4 feasible, maybe?
PS: I wonder if others agree that moving Titus back to DE is a good move.
PPS: Anyone know if he is still hangin’ with Gabby?
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/02/oregon_state_spring_practice_r_9.html#incart_river_index
Key lines are “mature football team”, “look the part”, and that they’re already passing and catching better on day 1. Not sure I like that GA isn’t involved with the D this year since they played so well. Hope he’s handing it off to competent coaches. Good to hear Wallace is practicing as well.
Those were the take home points for me.
On the negative side, those OL rotations don’t sound very good to me. Hope they can all improve significantly in 6 months.
concur. the long wait for Christian Wallace is finally over.
I hadn’t even considered that the D would drop off because GA isn’t coaching the D-Line this season. Really doubt that will happen, based on GA’s orientation and the players involved.
Certainly, the O-line is a big concern. It sounded like Gina didn’t actually observe Houston at C, Andersen’s mention of him was, at least, not particularly negative. I saw no mention of who else may have taken snaps at C. With all the “coach speak” about competition, I hope the position receives serious attention.
In the passing game, it is apparent that GA is looking for improved play from both the QB position AND from the receivers.
I hadn’t even considered that the D would drop off because GA isn’t coaching the D-Line this season. Really doubt that will happen
Probably not since there’s now an established mindset, but I do think GA is a great D mind, and it was reassuring knowing he was looking over that unit.
This next recruiting cycle we need to get O linemen big time. I’m not overly confident in any of these guys except Blake. A few guys in the latest class look promising, but might be two years away. I don’t like Delp much at all as an OL, though some do…someone like that has to step up. I don’t see Houston being that guy. Dunno. Seems like we’ll be thin next year and that position won’t firm up to where it needs to be for another 2 years unless we get lucky. I think they can be adequate with a lot of work, but I almost view the OL this coming year like the WRs last year, with a lot of ups and downs and the better teams dominating them.
Baseball:
Here is a highlight clip from opening day. Adley shows focus on framing up the pitch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WTecBeR-AA
What stands out is how much bigger and stronger our players look versus theirs. Looks like we out-athleted these teams.
New practice report up:
-Some quotes from McM.
-As expected, Yanni at C on the second unit.
-Luton fumbles a snap from Houston and Danny M. will be coming out with a story on Houston.

offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven aims to identify a starter.
Not this again…
I hope that’s just motivational talk.
I thought the same thing. Just let it play out.
Slick Buddha Willie cracks another fortune cookie:
“Live without pretending, Love without depending, Listen without defending, Speak without offending.”
I’m not going to lie, I hope my Willie “The Buddha” line sticks.
It’s hilarious and accurate.
I know it’s not particularly healthy to focus on negatives, but The Buddha is so easy to dislike!
Seems his entire staff, possibly excepting one, are all hyped as great recruiters. It will be interesting to see how they handle the locker room and X’s & O’s.
BTW, the suspended strength coach reportedly will finish his punishment and be reinstated tomorrow.
Why is it unhealthy to focus on negatives? Never heard of that.
Seems like that would only be unhealthy if the negatives weren’t valid or real. Seems destructive to focus only on positives or false positives.
The Buddha is a fraud and will be exposed as one. Used car saleman/motivational seminar hack posing as a coach. Kids will buy into that b/c their young and naive, but they won’t play for a guy like that long-term b/c their instincts and gut will take over.
Yeah… I can plagiarize Drake too.
Are you kidding? That’s a Drake lyric? LOL what a clown.
Sir Francis?
man
Slick Buddha and the NCAA violation All-stars.
Willy Vanilli
Will I Ham
I dunno..”Fortune Cookie Willie” might be better. Buddha is too high a station, he’s much cheaper than that. Like free after a bad meal of deep fried-something and fried rice.
Its going to be fun to watch that program implode under him with the Chip Kelly-expectations. Idiots like Canzano saying Willie is charismatic and the Ducks need to “find the edge” they didn’t have under Helfrich. The edge is gone man. Worst defense in the pac-12 two years straight (?) and nobody points out they need to play defense? They just need an “edge” to go with the cool uniforms?
I’m going to enjoy watching OSU’s young defense and Nall/Pierce the next two years…
Well, didn’t the Beavs have the worst D for a while and improved. Ducks will very likely improve on D since there’s nowhere to go but up.
I asked McMaryion about a potential breakout receiver. His answer? Hunter Jarmon.
Nice.
I’ve liked Jarmon for a long time. Was at the Stanford game when he broke a big one (from Mannion I believe).
He seemed like he could be Wheaton 2.0 coming in. Smooth athlete. Hopefully this is his year and it clicks.
McM also says the “care factor” is a lot higher which is great to hear.
Old school Benny Beaver on the practice helmets. Maybe he’ll make his way back onto Saturdays soon….it seems like Andersen didn’t care for the black helmets – did they ever use them last year? – and he changed the orange helmets too, replacing the numbers with the beaver logo.
It still seems weird they’re practicing this early. I think it should better inform their off-season work priorities between now and fall and give them more time to work on them. Plus, there will hopefully be a recruiting benefit.
BASEBALL GAME 3:
Beavs up 4-1 after 3.5 innings, they are again home team.
Sam Tweedt on the mound. Atwood at 3B, Greneir at SS has had a triple, Madrigal at 2B, Adley at C.
Outfield: Donahue, Cary, Kwan.
Hank Hager doing a good job as color man, Warren ….meh
After 5.5 innings, Beavs still up 4-1.
Will too late Nate make a move to start the 7th? Tweedt has faced 23 and each one has received a first pitch strike! He has thrown a 2 hitter thus far, 3 K’s, 2 BB’s. Pitch count at 81, enough in my opinion.
BTW, Whoreton’s ace got knocked around in a 9-1 loss Saturday; gave up 8 hits and 5 runs in 4.0 innings. Hit one and tossed a wild pitch as well.
Thanks for the updates this weekend. Much appreciated. With that out of the way……
This team is stacked with depth. From hitting to arms. There’s a reason they were picked to win the PAC and I fully expect they will. The returnees all have a chip on their shoulder from getting screwed and left out of last years tournament. I don’t foresee anyone taking any game for granted this year. Wins matter no matter who the opponent is. The talent and depth is there to make a deep run into June. Anything less than a trip to Omaha is a disappointment. The only thing that keeps these guys from getting there are injuries or piss poor luck. Talent and coaching only go so far. A little bit of luck is needed to win it all. This team can be the last one standing. Let’s enjoy the ride.
I also probably just jinxed it
Yes you did….superstitious meter pegged now!
Beavs win 11-2, keyed by a 3 run 1st and a 5 run 7th. 14 hits and 7 LOB.

WBB coming up at 1pm from Utah on PAC12 Net.
that’s a nice compilation OOB, thanks. If it’s not too much trouble that would be good to link to regularly.
As for Warren, he’d be the first to say he needs polishing but he’s enthusiastic and the lack of guile in his presentation is appealing to me.
There will be plenty of complaints about Jon Warren but I agree, it is hard not to pull for the guy. I really like them including Hank H. for color on the broadcast. After today I think Hank is closer to Jim Wilson than previously.
I don’t know how long that stat link will work, it came from the OSU Baseball Schedule page and was listed as “Live Stats”. The listing goes away sometime after the game ends but you can always get a link to the box score of completed games on that Schedule page.
Oregon lost 9-1 to Fresno St yesterday with a double header today to finish the series.
Didn’t hear any proclomations from them this year about being Omaha bound
Things are pretty quiet, even at the big O, regarding uck baseball. A month ago Tyson Alger wrote:
“Many of the players back from last season believe they needed a change in attitude. Instead of forecasting where they may end up — like last year when Cole Irvin declared “We are going to Omaha this year,” on Jan. 27 — the Ducks want to keep the focus on daily tasks.”
he added “Peterson will be one of the biggest keys for the Ducks, as the junior left-hander will look to take a step forward after posting a 4-5 record with a 3.63 ERA last season.”
Yup, that’s the same Peterson who, as noted above, stumbled in the opener.
But, uncle phil did buy ’em a new pitching coach…from Cal St Fullerton, surprise.
I think my cousin is going to be their Game 2 starter this year (unless Peterson keeps having outings like this)
For his sake, I hope they win game 2 and drop game 3
Very cool (and a little bit sad), be interesting to get his observations on the effect of Horton turning over the pitching coaching to the new guy.
Also on their staff is Brac Warren whose brother joins the Beavs staff this season.
EDIT: Just checked the roster and couldn’t find the brother (Cole? Warren), was there recently. Curious.
Just realized the ducks scheduled the civil war series for Thurs/Fri/Sat. What kindof shitty scheduling is that for what is likely to be your biggest drawing weekend attendance wise?
Must be wanting to keep the OSU contingent at a minimum so they dont make it look like a Beaver home series.
It’s mother’s day that Sunday. I think it’s the PAC 12 that’s makes the schedule.
Cade Warren didn’t make the final 35 man roster
Thanks for the word on Warren, does that confirm that he was a walk-on?
WBB up by 4 at the half at Utah. 11 turnovers in the first half, so more of the same there. The front line of Gulich/Brown/Orum is having a bad game, only 3-9 for 6 pts combined. OSU 2-6 at the FT line. Neither the men’s or women’s team can shoot free throws worth a hoot. Hopefully, the gals ratchet it up in the second half!
WBB: These gals are so frustrating, gotta luv ’em for their character and selflessness but when are they gonna take care of business and really put someone away and cruise to a win??
At the half up 4, but even in RB’s and 11 TO’s. 3pt FG’s are the difference with Tudor, Wiese, and Hanson combining for 6.
Utah active on D, Beavs need to respond.
That home stand with Colorado and Utah last month seemed to be a peak of sorts. They beat this Utah team by 26 in that one. They’ve sputtered since then really.
This team somewhat reminds me of the ’14-’15 version–when Weise was a sophomore and Hamblin/Weisner were juniors. They played really great basketball in January then kind did a long down-glide to the season end when they lost Stanford at home, then got knocked out the first game in the Pac-12 tourney by Colorado, then lost to Gonzaga at Gill in the second round of the NCAA. The trajectory seems similar.
I think I see what you mean. Not only are they not just thrashing the opponent, but they aren’t getting a lot of experience for the gals who will be starters next season.
OK, so they end up with a 14 pt win, coming on in the last quarter.
Nice to see Pivec with a good effort in 23 minutes. Orum has been making strides lately as well.
Won the RB battle by just 2, and had 18 TO’s, 56% at the line.
Yeah, that was a nice 4th quarter. Beavs haven’t scored more than the opponent in the 4th very often in conference play–maybe 2 or 3 or 4 games?? Pivec, Weise, and Tudor carried the day. Hansen 1-4 at the line. She’s shooting something like 39% at the line in conference play. Uff-dah. She did have 5 steals though, so good with the bad, I guess. So…its on for Gill next weekend. Too bad Stanford doesn’t play Oregon on Friday instead of the Beavs.
The closer the beav men are to the basket, the lower the chance of the shot going in
I’m watching for the first time since game 5 or so. Soooo awful. They look like a HS team.
and that team you said looked like a HS team won.
Beavs win 68-67
What does that mean Utah played like?
HS janitors.
NOT THE WORST TEAM EVER!!!
Gotta hand it to them for toughing it through a lot of adversity.
About frikin time
Damn, nice comeback.
Kiss my ass, Jay John!
Have to give it up for STj. He had a huge game, and some clutch shots. Good D to force the 5 second violation at the end. Missing free throws down the stretch didn’t bite them in the ass this time. Fortunately only a couple seconds on the clock after Big G missed two at the line, but not enough for Utah to get down the court. Maybe missing will inspire him to become a better free throw shooter. Good win thanks to Thompson getting red hot in the second half.
So they really did win & it’s not Fake News?
Well done!
A great rodent weekend.
Came home from an OT victory against Michigan, turned on the TV and and caught the last twenty seven seconds of the Beav victory. Give them credit for not mailing it in after the CU loss.
Thank goodness the refs missed that travel by STjr
They missed more than just that. The refs were terrible..I heard they were reffing a JV game at a Jr High on Friday…
They called all sorts of “fake” fouls and missed the real ones.
It has been terrible more often than not in the B1G this year as well. Last evening it was brutal.
Who else can picture this team catching fire and going on a roll through the rest of the season and the conference tournament? We could easily win the whole thing!
Dream on….
Sarcasm?
It has been on fire all season- “Dumpster fire…”
Recruit D1 athletes and a legit point guard then let’s talk about ‘catching fire and winning the whole thing’
First time I’ve gone to a game in ages, but my 10 year old thought it would be a nice Christmas gift. He picked a hell of a game. I’m still stunned that Utah tanked it like they did.
This is why I watch every game. Thanks guys. And does anyone know where I can buy one of the warm up jerseys?
Tom Brady can steal one for you.
Good Weekend!
Have da Beavs already held their junior day?
It’s the same day as the spring game, March 18th
BASEBALL: Lineup for the 10am start has ‘ol reliable Jake T. going for his second W in this young season.
Madrigal moves back to SS, George Mendazona at 2B, Jack Anderson in RF.

Jon W. is bumbling more than usual but Hank H. is providing very good help.
Thanks. I found it but it keeps cutting out.
Indiana’s P is throwing meatballs.
Ha!
Hobbie Lobby
Thompson dominating weak competition again. 8ks through 3.
The next batter goes yard. 2-1
I’m looking forward to pounding Nebraska next weekend.
Hope so. Yours truly will be in the house. Neb. should have a pretty good team, so they will be a good early season test.
Will be looking for your evaluation of Mulholland if he plays. So far the jury is still out IMHO.
General opinion of the “vibe” around the team would be worth reporting as well.
Safe travels.
Wasn’t Nebraska one of the teams with worse RPI squeaking in ahead of us in last year’s tourney….?
This play by play dude is AWFUL. haha. Missing every pitch, called a HR in play, etc.
Mulholland coming in, anxious to see how he does. Seems to have plenty of potential and did well the other day.
Thompson leaves with 90 pitches, 60 strikes but, vs better hitters that may not be the whole story. (ie: throwing strikes is fine unless they are easily hit). Still, good to get ahead in the count.
Is Indiana not considered a good team?
Thought somebody here mentioned they were predicted as a post season team this season?
They are a top half big10 team. A fringy post season team.
Generally picked to finish fourth in the B1G. Their coach from their CWS teams is now at ASU.
GoBeavs
Good win for da Beavs.
Some thoughts of the opening weekend,
– More than a few notable pitchers did not see any action this week, Donovan, Church, Hickey, and Martinek.
– interesting mixing of the infield. guys are shifting around quite a bit. Wonder when Casey will settle on the defensive lineup.
– A little surprised Rutschman started the whole weekend but he’s handled the staff well so far. Does need to drop in the lineup now.
– Depth everywhere on this team. Didn’t need to reach deep into the bullpen.
– Didn’t realize Nobach wasn’t on the roster to start the season. Helps alleviate some of the logjam.
– Mulholland off to a great start. Looks like the lead candidate for the weekday job and when a 4th starter is needed.
– Thompson should be relegated to the long man. Maybe even situational righty. Nice outing today but like last year, can only go 5 innings or so.
– Bullpen allowed no earned runs.
So far so good, Looks like if the starters can give 7 innings, it’ll be very tough for opponents to catch up. And due to the depth in the bullpen, I’m not worried if a starter gets knocked out early.
Rutschman looks the part from the highlights on the OSU site, one game at DH was expected due to the work involved in the double header. He is not hitting up to expectations, but it is only 4 games.
Good observation about the number of pitchers that didn’t get work.
Eggers recently tweeted his expectation that Nobach will redshirt.
I don’t want to jinx Mulholland, but he sure looked like the real deal on paper before the season started. Maybe he turns out to be a “go to” long reliever?
Looks like there could be several candidates for the long man. would be nice to see the other guys too, just to see what they can do. And since Mulholland is a freshman, there’s no need to keep rushing him out there.
I’d like to see other guys too and will be surprised if Casey doesn’t get them onto the field next weekend. His mixing of the infield guys this last weekend tells me he is using the time in Arizona to learn about his guys in actual game situations. (Cap’n Obvious).
The nature of pitching makes it a bit more difficult to move guys in and out. Still, he could have given another pitcher playing time by only giving Mulholland one appearance. Does this mean he has Mulholland rated well above some who didn’t play? Or maybe he knows most of the others well enough without game time at this point?
FOOTBALL:
Danny up with (the much anticipated?) piece on Sumner Houston and the move to center. I continue to believe this is an important factor which is often overlooked. Good to see some info.
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/02/sumner_houston_striving_for_pe.html#incart_river_index
In there, it says he hasn’t snapped since grade school. His HS film listed him as a long/short snapper.
Like that he does not consider 48/50 snaps good enough and wants to be perfect. Nonetheless, the center position, as well as TE, seems to be under-addressed in recruiting by Andersen and staff. They must think he can pick it up in the next 6 months. One positive is that hopefully he has an aggressive mindset coming from the D Line, and is an aggressive run blocker.
Not a fan. Sad a converted D lineman who hasn’t snapped in over a decade is the best option for a Pac-12 team.
I’m not sold either. GA was a center, you’d think he could manage this position and recognize the importance of, not only the playing ability but of the value of good chemistry here. Last year was a fiasco at least at the beginning and this doesn’t look a lot better.
We are told Sumner is very smart and has a high care factor, good things if they don’t result in paralysis by analysis. And that possible aggressive mindset mentioned by ObjCritic has to be harnessed. A Center better have a flawless exchange before turning his aggression upon the guy across from him.
I do like that he comes from De La Salle and being a Jr would give some continuity if he works out.
As with the QB, we need open competition here. The options look pretty slim (no pun) but need to be considered. It’s on the staff that they are so limited.
The center issue is very concerning. Didn’t GA say there were too many OL guys when he took over? Now he is turning over rocks to field an O line. The bizarre thing is he played center and should appreciate the importance of the position.
Here’s OSU MBB problem; they’re playing 14-year-olds (see photo top of article):
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/02/just_how_close_was_oregon_stat.html#incart_river_index
ST jr. needs to get into Andersen’s weight program…. : )
Surprising win or not, Utah collapse or not, always nice to beat the Utes……they’re just annoying somehow.
I mentioned in an earlier post that I thought the Beavs mbb looked like little kids playing against other teams, whose players appeared to be 30 years old.
Living in the best college town in the PAC gives them a more youthful, wholesome appearance.
Ahh rankings….SU ahead of OSU in WBB:
http://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/team/_/id/24/stanford-cardinal
Hope Friday sees great turnout at Gill.
THE BROMANCE CONTINUES:
Eggers up with a piece on MR and how he “got stuck” firing Banker over the phone. And, the decision was made by MR alone!! He wouldn’t fudge the truth here……would he?
At least Eggers did address a few of the topics we’ve discussed, albeit with his pro-Mike slant.
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/345986-225803-riley-shuffles-nebraska-staff-in-hopes-of-better-things-in-2017
He was forced to fire Banker, and now this is a cover up piece. That poor bastard sounds like he’s struggling in Nebraska. BeavGopher, how does the conference look this year? If any of the teams around him are just mediocre he’s going to have a rough year.
Nice, Mike…….he fires two of his buddies and it feels like a “breath of fresh air”. Is he really so delusional that he doesn’t realize it’s his act that has grown stale?. TPB”s will have him on a very short lease, but I guess he can still fire Langs and Cavanaugh to buy that 4th season. They will all be meeting at the San Antone retirement spread in a couple of years anyway, thanks to NU and their dollars foolishly spent.
It’s like the saying goes: #TPB and their money are soon parted
@angry. It will be about the same as last year. Neb gets two tough crossover games, tOSU and Ped State who should be better, and the conf. turkey, Rutgers. Wisconsin will be favored in the West, with most teams improved. I imagine the fans who are glad Tommy Armstrong is gone will be singing a different tune by mid season. #interceptionfest.
TPB’s simply won’t accept the counsel of those, like angry, who have told them about the “takes years for a QB to learn MR’s advanced system” excuse.
We’ll see how many wake up as this season progresses.
Side issue: who do ya cheer for? Slick Buddha or The Gum Chewer??
That really is a tough one. I hate to say that I almost want Simple Jack to pull this one out. Not for the good of TPB, more to see how quickly hole fan turns on Slick Buddha and his lame shithouse poetry.
For me it’s no question. I don’t want Oregon to win, ever. And I don’t hate Riley, so I’d like to see him get a win in Autzen for the first time in a decade. Hope you guys are getting your Big Red chewing gum memes ready
I cheer for The Gum Chewer > The Fortune Cookie. Let him take more from a victory over a declining Duck team than he has right to….It’s likely his final season anyway.
Camera cuts to the stands, there sits Banker “in disguise” with an OSU Beaver cap, a hot dog in each hand, NU offense takes the field, he reflexively starts hand jiving with the hotdogs, condiments going everywhere…
He’s so fucking full of shit. The AD probably stood there with him when he made the call so he couldn’t weasel out and make excuses.
The Eggers story = #fakenews.
I’m pretty sure Eggers is just reporting what Smiley told him. He’s probably not going to tell Eggers that Eichorst made him do it. In fact, Eichorst probably told Smiley what to say in the interview. He doesn’t want his head coach to look like a puppet to his beloved fan base #TPB.
Riley’s staff is a hodge podge that suggests excellence is not around the corner.
Still has Bray and James Rodgers on staff, that sounds good. But Kristick? That seems questionable. And the strength coach Phillipp he brought from OSU as well. Given Andersen’s first priority in year one was getting OSU stronger, Phillips presence wouldn’t seem to bode well for NU.
Gunderson to SJSU to work with Brennan was kind of interesting.
He did upgrade the DC position big time.
I wonder if the DC is going to be the next HC? They opened up the check book for him…or a significant electronic transfer of funds anyway….
He failed at U Conn. If/when MR gets canned the AD probably goes with him. Doubt he gets the gig.
He didn’t get a chance at UCONN. So calling it a failure would be disingenuous. He was fired because the AD wanted him to hire Kill, and he wanted to hire his own staff.
>But Kristick? That seems questionable.
I have no idea if he can coach or not, but lack of physical talent doesn’t mean a guy can’t coach. That said, I never thought Kristick was that bad and he did manage to get a cup of coffee with the 49ers practice team, so he must not have been that horrible. Were you thinking of Pankey?
Agreed on the strength coach, he was a big part of why we sucked. Crossfit exercises don’t hack it in college football.
Barring a miracle, I think this is Riley’s last season in Lincoln.
I liked Kristick- thought he was the best LB (of an admittedly lackluster lineup) that we’ve had in quite a while. Never understood why people didn’t like him here.
This year’s LB group may end up being pretty good but other than that, who have we had since Kristick that was better? DJ Alexander maybe when he was healthy, but he was never healthy.
The Croation Sensation was a good player.
As I wrote below, I thought he was good and liked him, but the media portrayed him as great, and he was always a step slow and missed tackle from being what they wanted him to be. Good player not a great player.
Pankey, I think that’s who I was thinking of…arrive late. Fall on pile. Get assisted tackle. Risk late hit call.
or maybe it was the JC guy with the long hair that was brought in “to play right away” and just didn’t seem to ever get on the field.
Cade Cowdin I think was his name.
Worst looking LB I have ever seen on film after the Krebs brothers.
Yeah, the media tried to play up Pankey as decent because he got like 80 tackles 20 years downfield after missing the initial tackle.
He was 4th worst ever after the 3 players above.
Can’t forget Reuben Robinson.
Oh man, great one. RR is tough to place.
I’d say he is tied with Pankey as the worst one who actually played. I don’t think the Krebs or Cowdin ever played.
Who was the guy a few years back who was a defensive captain, with long stringy blonde hair?
Kevin Frahm……i dont know why, but that guy always bugged me. I have no good reason, as I didnt follow the team very closely back then.
Can we devote a post to our all time least favorite Riley era players? (must have started more than 1 game)
Yeah RR and Pankey were the original Flailbackers, I think Pankey was actually the first? Don’t remember, it’s been too long haha.
Angry do you have the original site on disc somewhere, now I’m curious when it was that I coined the term Flailbacker.
If you go to the right side under “archives” all the months and years are organized.
Some of the very early posts are missing. I’ll check later today if i have them on backup.
Kristick was a gifted athlete. But it’s what was, and most likely remains, in his head that leads me to believe his coaching potential is limited.
Dirty play is not tough play. But when that’s your foundation and you conflate it with tough play, you’re destined to reach no more than a fraction of your true potential. I don’t see him as the reflective type who looks at his game and sees where he failed and how he can use that as a lesson he can teach his players.
To be fair, his playing days were in his youth. So that mentality may have gone away as he matured.
Oh, and there’s this gem:
“Riley has already red-lettered one date on his 2017 schedule. Nebraska visits Eugene for a Sept. 9 rematch with Oregon. The Cornhuskers beat the Ducks 35-32 at Lincoln last season.
“That was a big game for us,” Riley says, “and this will be a big game for us, too.”
Beating the worst Duck team in what, 15 years, at home, by 3, was big? UO has had the worst or one of the worst Ds in the Pac 2 years straight.
With Willie and Riley on the sidelines, and the state of the two programs, that game becomes less meaningful all the time.
There will be a B1G invasion the 9th of Sept. with Gophers in Corvallis and Hucksters in Eugene.
Make sure to thank them for hiring Mike and throwing us a lifeline.
I think the real gem is this line: “The games we have to win to take the next step, we did not.” If that isn’t a crystallization of the Angrybeav critique and the 9 win win-cap I don’t know what is.
If Smilin’ Mike was being brutally honest the quote would read…”in my college head coaching career I have NEVER taken the next in winning games and I don’t see my teams ever doing so”. SOS with Riley.
in this situation I root for the Ducks. To adapt a phrase from Dr. Strangelove, “We cannot allow (a mine shaft gap) Nebraska to be successful while Riley is there.”
>Beating the worst Duck team in what, 15 years, at home, by 3, was big?
Well, when you’re a career 4 and 10 against that team going into the game, yeah…it is big for him.
Riley got an imaginary ring for the thumb.
sell
PITCHING EVALUATION:
Angry’s is gonna love this response from Aaron Fitt when asked if the Beavs pitching impressed him:
Fitt’s answer also provides a “professional” opinion of the strength of the Duke and Indiana bats.
https://d1baseball.com/chats/weekly-top-25-chat-feb-20/
Kristick was a very good LB. He was overhyped by the media and that made it seem like he was playing below that level, but it’s because they made him out to be great when he was just very solid. They did the same with Bolden — pretended he would replace Cooks because he looked the same physically. Anyone who watched the film and knew what to look for could tell he was nothing like Cooks.
Didnt cooks set the combine speed record a couple of years back?
I could see Bolden eclipsing that mark potentially this year. Would be cool to have a beaver record broken by a beaver.
Speedy Beavs
I didn’t realize he held the combine record.
But anyway, I think Bolden’s speed was a notch below, and he was a longer strider, and a dumber player (not going down vs Oregon on one of his first catches only to give Oregon time to score)…then the fact he couldn’t catch. I mean all of this was so evident early on, yet the media wanted to create a star replacement for Cooks. And he was black. If he was white, they wouldn’t have even tried it. But he was the same color and size so they acted like it was the same player. VERY lame and lazy.
I’m sure I sound like Trump blasting the media, but I did it at the time because the laziness and poor analysis of players was evident. Not to mention their awful narrative about Riley…
I’m definitely anti mainstream media here. At least the Oregon sports media. They are horrible.
Cooks ran himself into the first round. I think he got 50k from Adidas for setting the record. Bolden was never in the same league as Cooks.
His career to me is summed up by 1 play. The dislocated pinkie on that potential long bomb vs SDSU. Adding injury to insult.
Bolden always seemed to shy away from contact. Cooks (and James Rodgers for that matter) were physical players despite them being short.
also I don’t think your comment sounds like Trump, it actually sounds like a reasonable complaint and not just belligerent ranting.
serious question. Are people here really big time Trump supporters or does someone just have a bunch of dummy accounts they log in with to downvote with?
They are just angry
Fastest 60 yd shuttle and tied for fastest 20 yd shuttle. Bolden is fast but he doesn’t seem as fast as Cooks was/is.

I’m still pissed he broke and tied my records.
most dropped balls and not going down?
He didn’t set the combine record. He wasn’t even the fastest player in the 40 for his year- just the fastest WR (He was #2 to a RB).
He got the Adidas payout because he was the fastest player to run the 40 *in their cleats*.
Don’t mean to rain on the Cooks parade. Love the guy and he’s really fast, but not fast enough to break combine records.
See AK’s post above. He is the record holder in the 60 yd shuttle and tied for 1st in 20 yard shuttle.
Good call, thanks. Guess I got thrown off by the Adidas comment- knew that wasn’t correct.
The Cooks parade is back on!
Saw an NFL post on Cooks. On two deep routes he hit 22+ mph, maybe 24+ on one of them.
I believe Cooks ran the third fastest combine 40 ever… at the time. And he tied it into an endorsement bonus at the time.
I think Chris Johnson beat the old record. And I think the old record was long held by Darrell Green.
I’d say Kristick was above average due to his size. He played well under his listed size while at OSU. Bulked up before the draft but was playing around a little over 200 pounds his senior season. That’s a ridiculous low weight to be playing linebacker.
Yeah, above average is about right. What stopped him from being great is every time he had a chance to make a game changing play he whiffed. I remember some a dropped INTs and missed tackles vs Oregon right off the top of my head.
Doggett was a great LB from that same era. I’m surprised he didn’t play in the NFL. He was lean but really fast and always made the play. Could have been converted to a FS.
Both guys were classic tweeners, fast but not fast enough to be DBs. Could run sideline to sideline but could get run over by bigger RBs. Kristick got run over by Blount in the 09 civil war.
Agree on Kristick, but I think Doggett could have been turned into a FS.
6″3 210lbs, great tackler and great sideline to sideline. I’m surprised nobody took a shot on that.
I always felt bad for Hardin, he should have been a monster safety.
A trip down memory lane.
Remember that horrible safety from that era, #28 (I think?). I think he was a Hawaiian kid. Can’t remember his name but he was so bad and Riley kept putting him in a position to fail. I think he wound up being decent on ST at least.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: Per WFO above, regarding a reason to cheer for MR over the Buddha:
…to see how quickly hole fan turns on Slick Buddha and his lame shithouse poetry.
Any more good reasons? Anyone gonna go for a Buddha win?
There may be a prize, so far WFO is in the lead.
I’m going with Riley.
a. It helps the Beavs
b. Riley is awful, but he’s still a better person than The Buddha
c. Riley will have plenty of opportunities to blow games in conference.
Why Buddha? Buddha makes sense.
I like “the fortune cookie.” I think that sums up his cliche style.
ESPN is doing pieces called “Must Wins and Trap Games for 2017” on each Pac-12 team. Out of the 3 listed so far (Arizona, Cal, and Colorado), OSU is listed as a trap game in 2. I wonder how many other ones we will be listed in. I see this as a positive… people taking notice.

Does it count as news if it’s something we already knew?
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/candice-wiggins-says-98-percent-of-wnba-is-gay-claims-she-was-bullied-for-being-straight-021604963.html
Only 98%?
WNBA still exists? This is news indeed
I think she’s about 80% off on the players. But I wouldn’t doubt the fan base is lopsided.
Other than that, this just looks like a story of someone who can’t square their programming with two girls kissing.
When she can deal with it, she won’t care.
Right, because bigotry only ever goes in one direction /s
I don’t get your sarcasm. Are we talking about someone other than her now?
Sure… I agree. They probably have great big “woe is me” articles on Yahoo! too. Isn’t that why people read Yahoo!… ?
Baseball — six top 25 teams lose to unranked, somewhat mediocre, competition tonight. LSU, FSU, UF, Houston, Rice, and UL Lafayette. Will be interesting to see which of these teams are overrated.
It’s probably a better idea to look at some of that unranked, somewhat mediocre competition as possibly some of this year’s mid-major competitors. They come from everywhere these days.
Charlotte and Jacksonville????
I believe those two cities are inside the geographical boundary set by the term everywhere.
WORTH A READ:
Came across a piece in D1 about the weekend series in Fresno which ended with the Bulldogs and ucks each taking two games.
There is decent info on the games and the two teams, but the bonus is how the Monday night game was dedicated to Japanese-Americans who played for the Bulldogs after spending time in an internment camp in Arizona. While there they built a baseball diamond for the camp, which would eventually house a league made up of 32 teams of Japanese Americans.
Lots more in the article.

K State trolls the state of Texas.

I know it’s early but D1 baseball currently has the Beavs projected as the No. 5 national seed…..

Didn’t see this mentioned so my apologies if it was. Heimlich earned Pac-12 pitcher of the week honors yesterday
http://www.osubeavers.com/news/2017/2/21/baseball-luke-heimlich-named-pac-12-pitcher-of-the-week.aspx
I like the weekend rotation of Heimlich and Fehmel as No 1 and 2 starters. Thompson is certainly the wildcard here at No 3.
No Sam Tweedt?
Tweedt is the #3 guy. Thompson and Mulholland will battle it out for the weekday guy. Huge bonus if Rasmussen is able to make any kind of comeback. I only see that happening if they make a deep postseason run.
Agree on Tweedt, was only jabbing Whiskey.
I think you may have the timing of Rasmussen’s possible return about right, even then it’s too much to expect him to be in his old form immediately.
Shit! You guys are correct. I completely forgot about Tweedt. Probably since he missed all of last year. We can only hope he returns to his form from 2 years ago.
Lots of good stuff right here, but we are over 300 comments so I put up a new thread.
GO BEAVS!
