  1. Outcome of game will not affect the Beavs seeding. They’ll be a #2 in any region unless Baylor loses tomorrow and maybe grab the last 1 seed.

Will be super tough to beat a team 3 times in one season.

Key to the game will be turnovers. Limit own turnovers and create good looks. Stanford will make a run, will need to respond when it happens.

    • Had they even beaten Stanford before? I thought I read they hadn’t, in which case beating them 3 times in one year would be even crazier. There are always outliers, though. I expect it to be a slugfest and really close either way.

  2. I get so fcking tired of announcers sounding as if the Beavs are some kind of a mistake. These guys are sooo excited that Stanford has scorec some baskets.

  3. Wow, why didnt we look for someone besides Wiese. We ran same play every time down the floor, pretty easy to defend.

  4. Doomed by piss poor shooting. Pivec made some shots but Weiss didn’t save the day this time. This team has been challenged offensively and caught up with them this game.

  5. I am a Rueck fan big time but he didnt make offensive adjustments and Stanford shut down our only option. Weise was beat up and we needed to look to someone else. We ran same offensive set every time

  6. Man, the commentators wanted Stanford to win so badly. It was disgusting. Then the came gave way to Stanford when the no call offensive foul wasn’t called. I think our defender had time to tie her shoe and still got called for the foul. Agree, on the offense was offensive.

      • there’s a lot of truth to this. You see it all the time in baseball with the Yankees, but the most graphic example in my lifetime was the Seahawks vs. Pittsburgh in the super bowl a decade ago. Not only were the network guys unabashedly rooting for the Steelers they wanted Pittsburgh to win so Jerome Bettis could get his “reward.”

  7. Good experience. The game had almost no meaning other then the “title”. But what it does do is provide Rueck a blueprint of what teams are going to do to shut down Wiese. He has about two weeks to figure it out. It could be real helpful for the program to see how teams might attempt to shut them down. Not bad for a “rebuilding” year.

    • Good point.

As I said, I thin it’s tough to beat a time 3 times, particularly when the 3rd game has so much more meaning for them.

I hope this doesn’t screw the Beavs out of a #1 seed.

      • Just like the commentators pulling for Tree, the selection committee didn’t seem likely to award the Beavs a 1 seed anyway.

kman is spot on, Rueck has to come up with offensive tweaks; the team certainly will support some changes after the lesson learned tonight.

        • I wouldn’t hold my breath. He got out coached last night. His stubbornness has gotten results, but got exposed by Tree.

          • I stand corrected (updated), Eggers reports concussion in this MUST READ piece which give an indication of Rueck’s stubborn attitude about the system that got the gals this far.
Looks like we’ll see the same approach as long as this season goes and, in reality, it’s too late to be making sweeping changes. The return of McW may solve the problems, still, Marie and even Kolbie have something to offer offensively if Rueck encourages them to do so.

Again, it’s a MUST READ for insight into the thinking of the PAC12 COY:

          • I don’t see what you see in that article. It looks like Scotty thinks some people should be taking the lid off, but they’re gun shy.

I imagine Syd will talk to the team and tell them that they need to fill her assist line when she passes the ball to them. It’s Tourney time. Let loose the ball.

          • I asked Rueck if he will have to devise a plan to get more offense from players other than Wiese, who will face a similar defensive strategy to Stanford’s through the NCAA Tournament.

“The reality is,” he said, “nobody is as disciplined as (the Cardinal) are. They play great defense, but we do, too.”

That’s true. I still think, however, it’s going to be a problem if Gabby Hanson, Breanna Brown and Kolbie Orum are unwilling to take short open jump shots. If they can make just a few — as they did at the start of Sunday’s game — it keeps the defense honest and opens up opportunities for Wiese to do some damage.

So wouldn’t that be a priority moving forward?

“It’s been a priority all year,” Rueck said.

          • And?

It’s been a priority all year… meaning everyone else has been holding back… not disciplined, as was posited at an earlier date.

  8. I thought it was funny, those announcers were praising Smith from Stanford and both of the defensive highlights they played clearly showed her fouling Wiese on a three pointer and on an inside block she came completely across the arm of the Beav shooter. I don’t watch women’s basketball much, but I thought it was very randomly officiated.

I was also kind of shocked out how the Beavs seemed to have no option besides Wiese in the 4th quarter. Why were those players passing up wide open 15 footers?

    • the 15 footer was Jamie Weisner’s specialty and in this game you could see the meaning of her graduation applied very graphically. It also seems to me, having watched most of tournament games more than the rest of the season combined, that OSU gets the ball slapped away a lot and they seem to dribble into double teams with alarming frequency.

      • I’ve been watching the last few games and I was kind of stunned by the sloppy ball handling. If they didn’t play such great defense, they would be a 10 loss team.

      • While 14 TO’s tonight is just about their total season average, the dribbling into double teams is a recent development. Is it the level of the recent competition? The paucity of scoring threats?

One thing sure, Rueck has gotta be tired of some of those lazy passes.

Someone here recently pointed out that the Beavs D has prevented opponents from scoring off of turnovers as much as would be expected, that was true tonight as the Beavs got 2 more points off of TO’s eventhough they committed 4 more TO’s than tree.

  9. Our bigs had to hit the 12-17 foot shot. It was open all night and Gulich capatilaized early. When we stopped hitting that shot Stanford was able to extend pressure even more. Make a few more and the have to collapse on the at high post entry and we have a completely different ball game.

    • Players afraid to shoot last evening and waiting for Syd to save the day. When Pivek went out with the two fouls, the whole game changed.

      • Agreed.

You’re a hoopster. You have an open shot that the best in the world miss at a 50% clip. Take the shots you are given, because the shots you are given are free due to the double and triple teams on your point.

If you don’t shoot, too many passes lead to too many bounces and too many turnovers. Make them earn the possession with a board and hound them until you get the ball back.

  10. Not sure why two fouls is such a trigger for Reuck. Not worth missing entire quarters for. Pivek ended the game with three fouls.

    • It’s basically a standard across all of college basketball, two fouls in the first half means going the bench. Players with two fouls in the first half will play much more timid on the defensive end so they don’t pick up a third. Teams will attack that player because they know the player won’t risk another foul. If the player does pick up a third foul, then they can’t play as aggressive in the second half on both ends.

The strategy is to try to save the best players for the end of the game if the team needs to start fouling. Bench players are generally exempt from this rule.

      • I understand the strategy. It’s overused though. A player in rhythm often time won’t be after sitting for so long.

        • It’s a big risk but maybe in a game like yesterday, it could have been worth it since there was nothing to lose in terms of seeding and potentially a lot to gain.

Risk could also be mitigated by having a deep bench but that doesn’t seem to be the case right now.

  11. As the lone Beaver enthusiast in my family, I convinced everyone to gather round to watch last night’s game. The sound of “SHOOT THE BALL” echoes still.
