        • U need a staff that can coach as well. Ur coordinators need to be great schemers and x and o guys. Not to say heyward couldn’t do it but there is no reason to think he could either. Give him a position coach job. Dc is the most important staff member considering beau is a offensive guy.

          • Hayward wants to be a HC, if you think he is making a lateral move from UO to OSU to coach with an unknown on a team coming off a 1-11 season when he can stay at UO (or go with Taggert wherever he goes) you need to re-think that.

Everything I have heard about him says he will be a HC one day so I think he can handle DC (and he spent this work working with one of the best at UO so I am sure he learned some things).

That said, I see it as about a 1% chance since Baldwin has zero connection to Heyward.

  1. If true, expect Baldwin to offer Troy Taylor the offensive coordinator job. Taylor was the OC in Baldwin’s last year at ewu. Set fcs records.

This might be good news for Hall, since Baldwin likely doesn’t know many defensive coaches with fbs experience. Might try to pick up one of the fired head coaches like bielema who was a DC. Could pick up some recruits there.

  2. Yep, the assistants will be the lynch pin. I don’t really have an opinion on Beauner, but if he brings a bunch of nobodies from FCS teams as assistants I’ll be pretty pessimistic.

  3. Definitely needs a big time dc to make this work. He should come pretty cheap so hopefully they open up the wallets for the assistants.

    • Fuck that!

He’s worth $750k (maybe) on the market. We’re going to pay at least twice that… because we’re not going to pay market price for a real coach.

  4. Could have been much worse. 2 or 3 other schools were honing in on Baldwin. He wouldn’t be around next cycle, so we’ll know one way or another. I think it’s the most logical hire given he has a career arc of HC, P5 assistant, and now P5 HC. Also worked in the PAC and knows the PNW. Good cultural fit. Young coach. Etc. Given all that, he’s the best fit I could think of, though I don’t love him (think to some degree he ganged up on bad teams with tweeners at EWU, but Wulff wasn’t able to do that, so give him some credit). B+ hire.

That said…in a worse case or even realistic scenario, a lot of downside possible with unknown upside…(I see 9 win max right now, subject to change as I learn more about him and see him in action).

I wanted Bronco last cycle. I wanted Baldwin this cycle. Not that I love either, but they’re the best fits all around that we can get.

  5. I think we’ll see Smith and Heyward come on as coordinators. Maybe Hall if Heyward is unattainable. Many of the higher up donors want Beavs on the staff, and that will be the compromise. Though, not sure Baldwin will like being told who to hire. So for that reason maybe not. I’d be curious to hear that conversation about assistants…it’s the nuts and bolts of this. I wonder how much control Baldwin has been given…
Hall purchased a house in Corvallis. Barnes might have made the offer contingent, and Baldwin had to accept that or not. Bad start if true. Again, curious to hear if anyone has inside info on that.

    • Heyward and Smith are coordinators I want as well. OK with Best as OC but my gut tells me Smith right now. Barnes and Baldwin need to hone in on Heyward for DC.

      • Smith makes no sense and won’t be the hire (he will still be at UW in 2018). Seriously doubt Smith is at OSU in any capacity other than as HC if/when Baldwin leaves. Marques Tuiasosopo is more likely than Smith, of course I am betting he gets promoted at Cal to that position

Heyward would be possible but I see no connect between him and Baldwin so I seriously doubt he is gonna give a DB coach he’s never worked with the DC job. My bet is that Baldwin either brings a position coach from Cal’s staff or hires a DC with experience in that position. But I’d be happy to be wrong about Heyward. He should be the hire.

  6. The Smith/Heyward comment is based on Washington fans wanting Smith fired and the upper Beav donors demanding we hire Beavers on the staff…

If it’s not Smith or Heyward, think up some others, because there will be Beavers.

Better not be Banker is all I have to say.

      • If any Beavs end up on staff it will likely be guys as position coaches. Baldwin is gonna want an OC he’s worked with in some capacity and he will either want the same at DC or he will go get a proven DC. Little chance he hires a guy he’s never worked with at OC and I see a 0% chance he hires an unproven DC he has never worked with.

    • I really think we’re going to bring in Bodie Reeder as QB coach and some type of Co-OC role.
Smith I could still see as the OC, as long as UW fires him or tells him to walk. If they don’t, I don’t see him walking away from that job on his own, despite pressure from fans.

    • Only because he’s a former Beaver. As mentioned above, large donors want Beavers. That Baldwin was the HC means Beavers will be scattered elsewhere. Else, no donations.

    • It’s the attachment to the last time the Beavs had major success. It makes donors feel better.

People believe that he can replicate that success as a coach. I am not one of those. Few guys have success at their alma maters.

      • Where are you getting that few guys have success at their alma maters? How many even get the chance? And of those, how many don’t have success?

    • I wanted him as HC because of the staff I think he would have hired. No interest in him as OC under Baldwin. This is Baldwin’s offense now and he needs an OC with a similar philosophy. My hunch is the he either brings Best from Eastern, he does get Taylor from Utah or outside chance he brings Tuiasosopo with him from Cal.

  7. When I initially posted #Geau4Beau, I didn’t actually mean it… Sorry if this huge misunderstanding makes for some bad upcoming years, guys.

Seriously, though, better than Jonathan Smith.

Beaver sports is making me sad again :-(

  8. Beau Baldwin will just be a figure head. Mike Riley will be hired as OC and assistant head coach. The old gang is in a secret staging area somewhere outside of San Antone just waiting for the all clear signal. Beaver Football is back!

  9. We needed someone flashy and with name recognition to help right this program quickly. I like Beau, but the cards are stacked against him. Barring a miracle we will be spinning our tires for a few more years.

  10. I have mixed feelings about the Cory Hall thing.
We all got swept up to some degree after GA left. Versus Colo & Stanford we looked good in the face of adversity. Hall also shocked us all with nailing some recruits. All good stuff.
I think it’s weird that (if it’s true) Barnes is pushing for his new HC to hire / retain some particular staff?
I don’t think I’ve ever read about a good AD / HC relationship where meddling from above was a thing.

    • I don’t know that we need to make too big of a deal out of it. GA retained Brent Brennan. Cory Hall is a good coach and recruiter, maybe Baldwin wants him on the staff.

  11. Per Eggers…..lololol

Report from Football Scoop that Beau Baldwin will be @BeaverFootball next coach is erroneous. School is in middle of interview process. Baldwin has NOT been offered the job. Dec. 3 remains target date for hire, but it’s possible it could take longer. #GoBeavs

  12. First order of business for Beau is to get rid of that damn banner on top of VFC. The second is abolishing the nutria (Jr Benny too) and replace it with a block O. Third is to get rid of the chainsaw (leaf blower?) that plays before EVERY third down.

  13. I love how the moron commentator made it sound like Cal was the bees knees, the ultimate of ultimates. They were picked to finish last in the Pac North, and they didn’t. They must now be awesome.

How far from last did they finish?

That’s beside the point. They just didn’t finish last.

  14. The low slow drum of lowered expectations over a sustained period must have been tough.

While you were always apparent, I appreciate the long play… now.

    Well done.

  15. If this ends up being true…I don’t think it’ll end well. Unlike many here, I think hiring a defense-first coach is still the right move, not getting another offensive-oriented guy, especially one with a grand total of one season of Power 5 experience of any sort.

I hope I’m wrong though, and that he ends up at least righting this shipwreck of a program.

    Go Beavs.

  16. If it truly was down to B.B. or Smith, at least we got a guy with years of HC experience. I know it’s at a different level, but if I’m hiring someone for a job, I want to know they can do that job, rather than just assuming they have the soft skills needed to succeed and they can learn the other stuff on the fly.

I guess we won’t have to change up the offensive system much, so that’s good. Maybe Wilcox will flame out at Cal and we can hire him as DC in a few years.

  17. Also, Barnes has given us possibly the most underrated of all gifts: the gift of low expectations. Remember how much less emotional GA’s first two years were for us when we didn’t expect anything? Part of me is glad to have that feeling again.

    • I don’t know. I didn’t expect 2-10 GA’s first season until maybe I realized he didn’t know what he was doing when it came to QB’s.

      • It’s not the QBs.

When will that sink in? Having one mediocre QB instead of another would have made no difference.

If you want to talk about not being able to recruit any QBs who are self-starters and could have ignored McGiven and run wild like Tate did at Zony this year, then you can talk about the QBs.

        • Yes, it is. GA locked in on Seth Collins and it’s been a cluster fuck at that position ever since. Blame McGiven, blame your turkey mash, blame yourself. GA either allowed his coaches or he himself fucked it up. And granted, QB’s are just one aspect of many fuck ups, it’s sort of how you get 7 wins in three years.

  18. BB was only the OC for one year at Cal, I’m not sure that is enough to claim success or failure. I do think his career at EWU is long enough and he had fairly good success. I’m neither unhappy about this hire or unhappy. I like that he is a winner, only time will tell whether or not he is ready.

  19. jax, you going to blow this guy or give him a handy when he gets to town? I suggest handy since your grip is so swoll from those amazing deadlifts.

  20. Chip Kelly to UCLA is confirmed.

Formal UCLA announcement: UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero has named former NFL and college head coach Chip Kelly as the Bruins’ 17th head football coach. Kelly agreed to a five-year contract worth $23.3M with a $9M reciprocal buyout.— Ben Bolch (@latbbolch) November 25, 2017

      • Isn’t he still collecting checks from Philly and SF? Maybe he’ll get some Adidas money on top of the UCLA salary similar to Saban getting Nike $ at Alabama?

        • This was the final year of his Eagles contract which was 6.5 million per year.

There’s still 2 years left on his 49ers contract worth 6 million per year. There’s probably offset language in his 49ers contract, so UCLA will pay him the 4.6 million they just agreed to and the 49ers will still be on the hook for the 1.4 million extra they owe him this year and next.

          • If Under Armor ponied up big to land Chip Kelly at UCLA, against Phil Knight’s desires to keep Chip at Nike school, it helps support the idea that we need to get Oregon State out from under their Nike sponsorship. Nike would never go out of their way to make us competitive with oregon, so we will always get their sloopy seconds while oregon is their showcase school.
We need the competition in this rivalry to be across the board, and that includes sponsorship.

    • *GASP*

But what about his bestest buddy, uncle Fill and his slave labor army?????

FWIW, that retarded line of thinking came from the same super reliable source as Beauner to Oregon State last night. Good ol footballscoop.

    • Our season isn’t over yet. UCLA’s is. They will at least wait for the season to officially end.

It could also be that they want to speak with some head coaches and as a courtesy schools don’t reach out to sitting head coaches while their regular season is still happening. The search firm may have made overtures to check interest, but the school wouldn’t have made contact yet.

  21. It’s interesting with Eggers and his comments, I noticed he took some shit on his twitter. I guess we will all look stupid if it’s not Baldwin and the announcement does not come until early December. I don’t know if Eggers is playing semantics to look like he is in the know?

    • Might just be the ad Dept feeding him info so that it’s not looming over the game.

The only way eggers is right, is if Barnes does take a huge swing for coaches who are fired today or sunday.

But like I said, in the musical chairs of coaching, the beavs would likely be left standing. Better to lock up a coach now before there’s nothing left.

      • “Might just be the ad Dept feeding him info so that it’s not looming over the game. “

If the AD thinks the HC situation will NOT loom over the game then they are more foolish than any of us thought!

        • I mean that they won’t be talking about Baldwin specifically the whole game. Sometimes when the hire is announced, they’ll have the new hire call into the broadcast. Mostly happens with bowl games but had OSU announced the hire today, ESPN might go for it, esp if the game is a blowout.

AD dept is trying to let the players play without distractions but I’m sure they are all reading the news this morning and asking a lot of questions.

      • Huge swing?

It’s what any program without low self esteem would do. A program who doesn’t think of themselves as a lowly mid-major who can’t get interest from anyone except lower division coaches would either pony up for a big name who was currently unemployed so they could hire them after their final game. Or they would make a list of P5 coordinators, mid-major heads and maybe a couple PH poachable heads. Then they would prioritize them and cull them according to disinterest and cost (and applications… which are a moot point).

I can’t believe that 37of the 40 coaches that should end up on that list were all culled, and we ended up with 38, 39 and 40 being the only ones who applied.

    • Venables is a pipe dream. He’s so principled that he will not interview until his team is done with their bowl game. And he has “the right school” already chosen.

To me, that means a savvy KState would fire their current head manin January and replace him with Venables. I would not accept the “hire my son” bullshit, if that rumor is even a thing. I suspect Snyder just doesn’t want Leavitt anywhere near any of his kids. That’s a sentiment I can understand.

The AD at TTech is also one of his best friends. That’s a possibility for him Kingsbury is out there.

  22. Chip Kelly to UCLA is a great hire. Just in time with new facilities there.

He won’t have to pay for any recruiting help in socal. Probably doesn’t need to leave the state very often. They’ve got the #3 dual threat QB committed to run his offense. Won’t have the nike influence over him.

  23. Much hope for a Vernon Adams type QB that is dual threat within first few years of a Baldwin era?

Could go for a Tim Alexander type with a better arm.

    • Someone should find out if Gage Gubrud is eligible for a grad transfer from EWU. I’m guessing not, but this was his JR season and he did redshirt so it’s possible.

    • Nice thing about Baldwin’s offense is that he can fit the offense around the QB. Doesn’t have to be a dual threat.

the year he won the fcs championship, the QB was a drop back qb.

  24. Whoa… Whoa… Whoa.. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. There will be plenty of time to start bitching about BB, over/under would be halftime of the Ohio State game on 9-1-18. In the meantime he deserves a “honeymoon” period.

Today’s focus should be on how to observe the almost annual windy, rainy end of year beat down administered by a revenge seeking rejuvenated Duck team. I’ll save my prediction for the game thread, but it won’t be pretty.

  25. Ohio State’s block O has a fresh look today. Nothing about Block O has to look old or out of date. It is simply a great shape.

Could see Block O at the top of the uniform, a single orange stripe not made of tape but that is part of the paint, and then optionally on one half of the helmet could have retro Benny ir state flag beaver stickers awarded for TDs, interceptions, fumble recoveries and wins against Pac-12 league opponents. The Block O on pants also looked good in 2010.

  26. So do we think this was just a CW prank?

It would be an awesome one. Hats off to those who pulled it.

If not, OSU now looks like a complete fool, especially if Beauner is now hired. We either have a major leak within our own AD, or Beauner has a serious lack of respect for his current team on the other end.

I’d like for neither of those to be reality. I think the simplest explanation would be posers acted as “sources” and contacted footballscoop with the low hanging fruit that is this story.

    • I think it was a legitimate leak and not some well crafted CW prank. I’ve emailed info to football scoop before about a coaching change I was made aware of, before it hit the news sites. Footballscoop then took that info and vetted it with other sources before posting anything(still before any other sites posted about it)
Sure, it’s only 1 example, but helps me to believe they do a pretty thorough job of verifying news before posting it.

My guess is somebody in the know isn’t happy about the hire(maybe somebody on the Cal/Baldwin side, maybe an unhappy OSU source) and they decided to leak the news in hopes that it would change the direction of the hiring somehow.
Maybe it helped put Baldwin on other teams radars for better job offers?

      • The timing of leak was a little suspicious since it happened right after Cal/UCLA started. Gave the rumor several hours to fester on the internet without any opportunity for Baldwin to comment on it.

        • Could have been an effort to eke out another 100K or so on the deal if Baldwin and Cal beat UCLA last night and were bowl bound. That didn’t happen. Best case for Beavers was a close loss and that did happen. Baldwin now avaiilable for quick transition and contract is kept with a base salary not to exceed 1.8 or 2 million before incentives for enough Pac-12 wins.

Beavs may as well call Sumlin tonight to vet interest. He is supposed to be announced fired right after today’s game.

      • Most of the sources used at football scoop are coaches. So all they have to do is reach out to coaches at that school to confirm. Or the coach who’s being reported on themselves.

      • He’s not going to get a better job offer from anyone. Nobody is looking at him besides us.

That being said, only he and his wife should know that this is legit on their end. I can see someone at OSU being upset about it. This would be a little sisters of the poor hire for us. But I also think Barnes and Ray are keeping this so close to the vest that even Kerry doesn’t know what’s going on.

      • I guess a tell will come if Football Scoop pulls back on it sometime tomorrow evening if no announcement comes. If he is the hire, why delay further than that? Cal is not going bowling.

    • Pirates need new adventures. I kind of think Leach has maxed out Wazzu’s potential. Did anyone here think he was going to be at WSU for life?

        • It’s just online sites bringing up Leach to Nebraska because of the Moos connection, right? I will laugh if Nebraska doesn’t land Frost, but like others have said Frost is no guarantee for national relevance again either.

          • It’s natural for coaches to be tied to the AD that hired them. I think Nebraska will end up with Bielema.

Don’t think Leach will leave this year if WSU makes the pac 12 title game. By then it’ll be too late to make a move.

  27. Anyone have the numbers on where Utah’s offense finished this year? Believe Troy Taylor was mostly effective as OC for them. Was Baldwin’s OC his last year at EWU so was in his 1st year as Utes OC. I trust Whittingham wouldn’t hire a guy without some chops.

Atleast Baldwin has a couple of guys in Taylor or Best he can go after. Both of them are legit. Hard to say if Machado’s talk about Smith being encouraged to leave or possibly beinf fired at UW are true. He also could work as the Beavers OC but may be best for Baldwin to go with an OC he knows.

    • Smith got a two year extension and raise going into this season. Seems unlikely that they’d want to fire him after 5 years with Peterson and that vote of confidence, but I haven’t followed UW that closely. Has the offense been that bad, and how much of it is just due to them losing players from last year?

UW offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith received the largest salary increase on his new two-year extension. In January 2016, Smith signed a one-year extension with UW for $440,000. This year, he signed a two-year extension worth $700,000 annually.

      • Thanks, I guess the only meat to the story (if it’s accurate) is that there are still more interviews to come. And he’s calling out Football Scoop for “fake news”, be interesting to see if they respond to that.

Dennis put down that Bloody Mary and get your ass to Corvallis!

      • Kerry seems pissed he’s getting scooped. I guess any news that isn’t from him is fake news.

Says espn report about contacting Fisch is fake.

Passes off footballscoop as some website when in reality, it’s the premier coaching site. (also the only website dedicated to coaching updates and is more right than not)

Times are a changing, Eggers is no longer the premier source of OSU insider news.

        • To me it just sounds like Eggers is being used as damage control for Oregon State. He doesn’t elaborate. He just says exactly what he’s been told.
Might be doing Barnes a solid in exchange for a future scoop.

          • Was he tight with GA? GA seemed to prefer Canzano. I know Eggers was friends with Riley. I’m guessing he’s a little more removed from the circle. Someone should ask him to name “real” candidates who have interviewed since he knows so much about the “fake” side of this.

          • Over the last year, Eggers always had recruiting info from GA that nobody else had.
Canzano might have been GAs drunken texting buddy, but Eggers was often used to put recruiting news out.

Either way, nobody is going to out their sources. Football scoop keeps them anonymous and Eggers will too.

        • I thought I saw on twitter from a verified source that the Jedd Fisch thing was false though. I think it was a CBS reporter, but I’m not sure.

So is right about that, I think.

        • Egger’s gets a wide berth with me because of his excellent commentary and reporting on the Heimlich stuff, but this is getting silly. Can someone tweet Egger’s some names and have him say yes or no, since he seems to know what’s fake and what’s real?

          • He’s historically the best reporter in the area, but he seems upset by the story breaking, and doesn’t seem to know what footballscoop is, never mind it being one of the most legit sources.

          • That’s just it. This isn’t about Eggers breaking or not breaking news. He’s just helping out as a form of damage control for an OSU AD with egg on it’s face. For being a partner in that, Eggers will benefit in the future as he will be owed a favor in return.

  28. I have a direct source telling me OSU was upset with footballscoop last night for putting it out before their season was over and OSU asked them to clarify that nothing is done yet, hence the edit to their original post. Still think Baldwin will be announced soon after season ends. (Isn’t it already over? Whats the point in waiting?)

    • Unless there are complications or other actual candidates in the mix, it seems like this should be done by Monday morning at the latest, right? What is interesting about Eggers, he’s put himself in a position where he can complain about others information without going out on any limbs himself. I don’t care whether Baldwin comes aboard now or in four days, what I want to know, is who else is in the mix. Probably nobody?

    • They should be upset. It’s highly embarrassing and unprofessional. And now hiring that specific person will be a joke, not for the hire itself, but because either the program or he has no control over something as simple as respect for the team that will go out and play later this afternoon.

In the professional world, this is something that can submarine a hire, even if an offer sheet has been forwarded and signed.

      • Any local writers commenting on topic are only reporting that the job is still open(duh….they havent officially announced the hiring)

Nobody wants to burn bridges with the Oregon State AD when they’d also only be verifying footballscoop’s original story.

Saying it’s still open is the safe way of saying “no comment”

        • That’s not the point. Someone has made us or Baldwin look like either or both don’t give a fuck about our football players.

If it was from within, there’s going to be scorched earth until someone fesses. And then Beau would look like a fool for coming here. He would be better off staying where he is, developing the new QB and actually showing that he has some skills as an OC–thus getting more than one offer where he can leverage his value. Or he can come and accept that OSU does this kind of thing to their own because the AD has no control.

If it’s from Beau’s side, we don’t take him for all the same reasons.

This gives us zero credibility with anyone we might want to hire. We’d be lucky to get Hall back next year if this is true.

This is why I badly want for it to be a prank. This is just shitty all around.

      • I agree it’s shitty we couldn’t keep it internal. Most disturbing would be if it weren’t finalized and Baldwin leaked it looking for some last minute bigger offer. Doubt that’s the case, but who knows. Probably some zitty intern couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
