Yes, turnaroundS (plural), opportunity this weekend to see turnarounds in Baseball, Football, and maybe even MBB.
MBB: Damn Straight, Tinkle could make news about plans to fill out his roster. BTW, as Quatre pointed out in the last thread, not much turnaround needed for WBB as Rueck has produced another 1st round draft pick, Marie the last pick of the first round in the WNBA draft.
FOOTBALL: Practice Saturday in Beaverton/Sherwood is open to the public and weather should be OK. A chance to see Smith’s staff in action, and to see the media’s response. Players will be available for autographs, is this a good idea?
BASEBALL: Doubleheader Friday (9am start-pacific) in Springfield Missouri with third game scheduled for Saturday. Odd schedule to set up for the series vs nike which begins next Thursday.
Missouri State Bears are not to be overlooked, ranked 10 spots below the Beavs at #19 by D1, the Bears have an RPI of 50** (Beavs 15). Bears are similar to Beavs of old: hitting .252 but with an OBP of .371, and with an ERA of 3.24, they are 22-8 for the season. You have to go back 14 games to find 3 losses/Beavs have lost three of the last 6. Any doubt a turnaround is needed?
Weather is likely to be a factor, thunderstorms and 20mph winds blowing out to left are forecast. Hammons field is natural grass and same dimensions as Goss EXCEPT only 315 down LF line. Nolan’s computer has the Beavs on the short end of 5-4 scores for all three games; beavergopher says he won’t let that happen……smart $ on the rodent-man!
Oh yeah, will Nick Madrigal see the field? How ’bout Kevin Abel?
**Bears were RPI 41 prior to their 2 run loss Tuesday to U of Missouri (RPI 28, now 26).
AAANND — A COUPLE AREAS WHERE A TURNAROUND IS ESPECIALLY UNLIKELY:
1-Scott Barnes is unlikely to stop looking for candy bars brought into events by frugal fans.
2-Larry Scott is unlikely to improve the PAC12 Network fiscal situation.
Go Beavs!
Being #1 is over-rated!
You got that right, cj.
True, but it’s hard to overestimate the importance of cutting down the free passes and picking up a couple W’s before returning to Goss and whoreton’s swoosh bags!
Which is the bigger headcase: Gary Andersen or this baseball team?
Andersen, hands down! Long term issues vs short term slump.
Don’t you mean pants down?
Is Patrick O’Brien someone that would have interest in transferring to OSU due to Langsd0rf and Riley? Would it be a good fit? I mean anything at QB would be better than the last couple years.
Mmmm… hurricanes.
Its Official, Coming Fall 2016 VFC banner coming down and will be replaced by another banner prior to the April 28th Spring Game. Final design submitted for printing just over a week ago.
What do you hope the design will be? My vote would be white with a big beaver logo in the center like some renderings from about 2 years ago. Something tells me we will see some text though unfortunately. Atleast the joke old banner will be gone.
The new banner will say “Hip Hip Hooray!”
They’re going to start it as soon as they’re done with this one.

So tarted
I read on one of the pay sites they’re going to sell ad space on the tarp to sponsors, so they can afford to put a new tarp into rotation every other season. They had a screenshot of the first sponsor, although the image hasnt been printed onto the tarp as of yet.

Booooooooo.
Nobach drives in one 1-0
End of 2, 1-1 tie.
Both pitchers have 4 k’s, and have thrown at least 1 WP.
A difference? Beavs have left 3 on base, Bears only 1. And 2 hits to 1 favoring the Beavs
Larnach hits a 2 run dinger 3-1 Beavs
Boom! Home run by Larnach. Barely stayed inside left field pole. 3-1 Beavs.
Used the wind and the 315′ LF line.
Lanach due to go on a streak, hoping this is the start.
No TV here, thanks for the detail on exact location of the HR.
Getting back to his early season swing would be great. No pulling everything, he’s hitting!
Gift safe call at first leads to a run for the Bears, but Heimlich closes it out. 3-2 good guys.
Aaaand Andy Armstrong with his second dinger of the season to make it 5-2 Beavs
Clutchman makes it 7-2 with a double and Larnach goes over the right field fence to make it 9-2
9-2 Beavers after a two run double by Clutchman and a two run blast by Larnach. Beavs are mad!
What inning?
Bottom of the 5th now, the stuff I mentioned before was in the top of the 4th
Thx
Larnach almost hit a boat out in center field.
It’s 9-2 but I’d like to see Heimlich get some quick outs and clean up location. Good 5th inning of pitching.
Fourth I meant.
Here is a link to the story on Luke in the local Springfield, MO paper. An even handed listing of what has gone on without editorial slant (except for the erroneous reference in a photo caption to Luke’s “criminal history”).
Sadly, many readers won’t study the Eggers article linked there, nor will they be aware of the authoritative piece by Martin Meyer which was posted here weeks ago (14Feb18).
https://www.news-leader.com/story/sports/college/msu/2018/04/12/controversial-pitcher-expected-pitch-against-bears-hammons-field-weekend/501130002/
Martin Meyer is now on that reporter’s case.
Tyler Malone with his first jack of the season – a no doubter to make it 11-3 Beavs in the top of the 6th.
Great to see (hear!) Malone doing that with 2 down and not wind aided. Casey showing faith in him.
B6, 2 down. 11-3 Good Guys.
Luke with 9 k’s and at about 103 pitches.
Refreshing to hear commentators know the conference and the Beavers.
Grenier 3 run jack makes it 14-3 beavs
Any working streams for these games besides espnu?
Burns looks good; his slider is really working. Like to see him close this out and maybe earn more of a look out of the bull pen.
Why is an elite P5 program flying across the country to play at Missouri State?
Because it’s faster than taking a bus.
Walked right into that one!
Hopefully this win turns the ship around
646 in attendance for game 1. Nice. /s
Solo dinger by Clutchman and then a two run donger by Malone to put the good guys up 3-0 in T1
Bats still hot Malone and rustchman both go yard 3-0 t2
Beavs plate another 4-0
Make that 5-0
Or 10-0. Whatever.
10-0 T2 after a Gretler grand salami.. Epic.
This looks like a different team
My pregame pep talk seems to have worked.
MP said the team didn’t have time for pre-game batting practice.
10-1 good guys. The Bears have runners on 2nd and 3rd with two down in B2, but a thunderstorm came in that lead the game being called. Will resume tomorrow, before the previously scheduled game.
Okay, but really, why is the team playing at Missouri State? That’s like the baseball equivalent of Bobby D football scheduling.
Dude they’re ranked 19th by D1, OSU is at 11th. Not exactly little sisters of the poor.
They scheduled this one before the year started. I doubt anyone anticipated them having a top 20 ranking year and us tanking a bit when it was scheduled.
They won their NCAA regional in 2015 & 17. Solid team for the past few seasons. Definitely not a surprise that their ranked even with their player losses from last year.
They are very good program that are frequent NCAA tournament participants.
This was a calculated scheduling move to boost the RPI. They beat Ark at Ark to make the
Super Regionals last year. They anticipated them being a good squad.
Sheesh, didn’t realize they were some perennial power or something
Bring ’em all.
They brought us.
So?
Travel is the best.
It’s even better if the local restaurant scene is decent.
I can imagine travel to Eugene must suck eggs. I think much of the knock on OSU and Corvallis is that most teams book hotels down here and eat the mall-court fare offered by this pretend town. It has become a little better in the last two years. But this town is really really bad for an epicurean when it comes to commercial fare.
Originally Missouri State was to come to Corvallis, but they “accidentally” scheduled Cal Poly the same weekend. This was a year or two back. Cal Poly bought us out and the athletic department still agreed to honor the return visit. Casey was and still is upset about this decision and the ensuing crazy schedule.
Thanks for being the only person to actually answer the question!
Whatever.
I refuse to believe Casey is afraid of them.

Excerpts from Martin Meyer’s communication with Wyatt Wheeler, reporter from the Springfield, MO newspaper, in reference to his story on Luke Heimlich, linked above by OOB, provided with permission.
“. . . I take exception to your article that has come to my attention that you published yesterday. First of all, there is nothing ‘controversial’ about Luke Heimlich at all if you would take care enough to understand WA state law as well as the US Department of Education Study and Caldwell Study originally cited and ignored by the Oregonian reporters. It is readily apparent that Dr. Ray . . . has conducted his own internal risk assessment and has determined that Luke is no safety risk whatsoever to the OSU community. It is obvious he is a well liked player and teammate to his coach and team . . . .
As you can see from my article attached [the original AB post], we treat youth here in Washington differently than adults charged with the same offense. We use a completely different vernacular . . . . The principle reason is to avoid stigmatizing youth. Our Juvenile Justice Act operates under the philosophy to rehabilitate, correct and direct errant youth. . . . Hopefully you will reach a higher understanding and appreciate the difficulties justice involved individuals face when seeking housing, employment and higher education.
We don’t rehabilitate you to 95% and say ‘you may now resume your pursuit of life, liberty & happiness. Oh, except you can’t play professional baseball. Sorry.’ If that were the case, what else couldn’t he do? Where would you draw the line in the sand?
. . . I don’t know Luke Heimlich and I’ve never met him. I don’t have any affiliation with OSU . . . . I just thought that these reporters were wholly irresponsible in utilizing terms wholly inapplicable in a juvenile offense proceeding. He was treated unfairly by these reporters as well as his university . . . . For the life of me, I can’t figure out why someone doesn’t have the courage to write a success story about him. Is he to be condemned to a life of unemployment and homelessness.?”
That guy is fucking awesome.
Shit! Sorry, should have been a thumbs up
Can you explain the need to “like” something?
Just curious.
Do you not see the hilarity derived from a non-answer?
It’s like a bunch of wimpy wimps afraid of being people,
#spinesearch2018
I article was a lazy cut and paste regurgitation of what was previously out there regarding Heimlich except the author figured using the word “controversial” would entice a few more clicks for is newspaper. Nice to see Meyer call his out.
Luke picked up his 28th career win tying him for 3rd place on the all-time list with Dallas Buck and 3 others. His 10 strike outs put him 2nd on the all-time for career Ks, just 6 behind Nickerson.
And to think he was barely recruited out of high school.
Is there a conclusion to your predicate… which could be about any of several players?
I’ll take that as a no.
Scott Barnes in the news again. Apparently a contract he signed a former Utah State mbb coach to had a typo where the terms were supposed to be for a 5 year period, but the dates only cover 4 years in another part of the contract. So now, Utah St is using this error to their advantage and claiming they only owe the since fired coach through the 4th year of the deal.
We’re in good hands…

Any one going to the scrimmage today?
Why the fuck would anyone waste their time on a waste of a program like ours?
1st Report from Mountainside:
Big crowd. Strong energy. Event going to be a big success.
Smith era off to a good start.
Oh snap! Mamma Machado is literally sitting right behind me.
Covert ops.
Close to end of scrimmage here and a few minutes ago on a corner endzone contested ball the DB broke it up to keep Hodgins from catching the ball but in the process Isaah went down in some pain. Barely over a minute later Willard or some QB threw a ball right back to the same corner where Hodgins was laying 1 foot out of bounds and the receiver caught a ball and then fell and ran into Isaah who then seemd to wriggle on the ground in more discomfort and pain. He sat up 40 seconds later after being surrounded by some lower level personnel.
Hodgins looked like he was holding his wrist after he got up. Could be out for the spring. Best offensive player sustains an injury. Let’s hope it isn’t a broken wrist.
Hodgins out of top half of his uni on the sideline in a sling. Also has an icebag on hi shoulder. Seems to be protecting his wrist and holding at times. Hopefully just a sprain but expect him out of practice for more than a week. Perhaps for rest of Spring drills.
Wallace nice catch and run but caughed it up after a good hit. Wallace will see the field in games this year at RB. Looks Top 3 on depth chart as being physically ready. Must protect the ball though.
Colletto has look poised and made a few decent throws and a scramble or two. Luton has had a camera on his helmet and will obviously get gane time this year but Colletto looking like Smith wants to mold and develop him as his time at OSU grows. Have not noticed Moran much to see how well he is competing. Or Blount.
Goes tweets that Moran is listed as QB but is working with the receivers.
#9 Colletto with the play of the scrimmage late in practice hitting #86 on a deep ball (36-37 yards) in the endzone. Slight dive catch against the defender. Colletto ran down to congratulate and celebrate with the receiver.
Luton with a nice 11-12 yard throw over the middle ends the Mountainside scrimmage. Good event in all.
Quick notes from Mountainside event:
Watched 2nd half (12-1 PM), as mentioned attendance good, even towards the end stands relatively full & standing room only as close as one could get to the field.
Practice consisted of rotational drills, alternating between individual units and group play. During down & distance drills (primarily mid field & red zone) it felt like there was emphasis on up tempo play? Little wasted time between calling a play in, getting set up and the snap, or in transition between units.
I tried to look closest at lines during their unit drill & particular players/groupings during group play.
Offense:
~40-50% of snaps taken out of shotgun. Lots of trip right or left in shotgun with slot on other side. Occasional motion before the snap.
Designed roll outs.
A little QB option play.
Noted pairings @ QB & RB
(6) Luton & (21) Pierce (1st string?)
(9) Colletto & (23) Tyler, Jr. (2nd string?)
(12?) & (15?) Blount, Moran & (29) Wallace
Of QB, Luton seemed to be the most accurate, smooth on his throws, followed by Colletto. Blount did make a few excellent short throws.
(21) Pierce looks to be the one to beat, but Wallace & Tyler, Jr. both show promise I think. I don’t know why Wallace was never used at this position? Wallace needs more practice on pass protection.
(16) Flemmings stood out to me.
Offense-Defense Line Drill
Offensive line felt more put together in drills; did well overall pushing the end rush to the outside & there were a few plays where a defensive lineman took to the inside & were driven headfirst into the turf.
Some concern on defensive line, as they did not seem dominant, but still very early in the process. Both (90) Hodgins & (97) Vakameilano made good plays.
Both lines looked more shaky in group play; some plays were executed very well& others if it was live would’ve resulted in a sack. Again, understandable given it is early.
Thanks for the update. I’ve been so out of the loop, but should get back on track soon. Reports like this help us all deduct what’s going on when we can’t be there.
Baseball
This is the radio link it is from the Bears but is the only thing we got unless you have ESPN+
http://player.listenlive.co/31991
No 3rd game by the way
http://www.sidearmstats.com/missouristate/baseball/media/ stats for the game
Curious to see some film of Colletto in these practices if anyone can find it or take some. I already know Luton is not the answer, so any hope lies in Colletto being the good/unorthodox QB we always see playing against us.
Sounds like Williard isn’t in the conversation at all. Bad sign for him when the depth chart is wide open.
For me I can’t say, bear in mind when they were doing X on X team drills, they rotated through QB’s every 3-5 plays. It’s possible Willard might’ve been in but any one who was there might’ve missed.
Amen brother. Luton couldn’t hit simple swing routes last year. Let’s hope the beavs can put a decent QB on the field….if not, a long, long season….good news is we always have Smiley Riley for an ice cream feed.
A couple quotes from Lundeberg’s piece on the scrimmage:
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-quarterbacks-in-spotlight-at-scrimmage/article_caca505e-ef18-5b5c-bb1d-66bc6745d1a9.html
Is it true that Colletto was not the starter at JC? Is so, I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around a back up at that level being a P-12 QB. What am I missing?
You have to remember Gary Andersen recruited him and thought he was “the guy”….if you do that or watch his film, you’ll quickly realize you’re missing nothing.
They are now in the 5th inning and it is still 10 to 1 Beavers
a double and E on the throw puts a runner on 3rd followed up by another double makes it 10-2 Beavers bottom of the 5th with one out
To the 6th they go as Gambrell limits the damage to 1 Beavers still lead it 10-2
Beavers get two on with one out and can’ anything out of as The Bears get a strike them out throw them out double play at 3rd
After 5.5 still 10-2
Gambrell doing will out there today still 10-2 Beavers as they go to the 7th
To the bottom of the 8th they go as Pearce come in for Gambrell
Garmbrell with a nice day of work as he went 5.1 with 3 hits one run and 8 Ks and 2 walks
After two Ks Pearce gives out a double
Another K ends the 8th Beavers still lead 10-2
Malone gets a lead off double but there Beavers can’t do anything with it as they go to the home half and still only lead 10-2
if this was a new game Beavers would be down 1-0 and they would be going into the bottom of the 7th
Yeah, if the beavs were undefeated, they’d be 32-0 but they’re not and this wasn’t a new game.
And if my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle
I’m not so sure about that these days.
Whoa
Not that there’s anything wrong with that since you identify as a woman
bottom of the 9th
A ball that land just fair two on 1st and 2nd with one out
and Grenier is hurt on the paly but he seems ok
Beavers turn a double play on a sharply hit ball to short to end the game. They tak it 10-2 and they sweep the Bears as they out score them 27-8
Did anybody else notice the inflatable football helmet is back from the dead? Just like Riley, it will always cime back. Seen here in this media coverage of today’s scrimmage. The helmet and Riley both get as much screen time as Smith, although Smith is the only one of the 3 who gets to speak om camera.
https://twitter.com/NickKrupke/status/985285135384768512?s=19
SMH. Why!?! Orange fog too expensive?! The helmet will touch the goal post at Reser. They’re going to run right into the goal post.
I am beginning to realize that the more stuff they bring back from past eras, the less I want to root for these guys. Nostalgia becomes nauseating if it represents failure or refusal to change as a policy. Bringing back a 1990’s inflatable is epically embarassing, short-sighted and operating on the cheap.
JS to the coaches, “What-up guys, we need to freshen up the scrimmage. Does anyone have an idea of how we could bring in some fun.”
MR: “Ummm, well, gee I think bringing out the old inflatable helmet would be a neat deal for all of the kids.”
Barnes: ” Great idea, all we need is to find a foot pump and we can send some grad assistants up on Wednesday to get started on it. Now I can go on another coaching search trip without worrying about cost.”
Players: “Wait, didn’t that helmet get tossed out when we got our Big Boy Pants?”
Ed Ray: “Inflatables are tough and make opponents fear our A game, good idea.”
Urban Meyer: “You are serious? Running through inflatables for spring practice to prep for The OSU? That is really shocking, OSU never adjusts what they do.”
OSU pollyannas: “Good to see them going back to the MR way. I loved the helmet.”
OSU AB: “It is over. JS can’t get out of his own way, I can’t wait to see the timeouts stack up at half-time, gum wrappers littering the sideline, and more lip service towards running the ball in the future…Goodbye OSU football…”
They seriously had the inflatable helmet?!? I thought it was responsibly floating in the Pacific with other plastic garbage…
Apparently “The Return” theme has many applications…”The Return” of Jonathan Smith, “The Return” of Mike Riley…”The Return” of the inflatable helmet…”The Return” of the sports bra uniforms next? Then what? Let loose an oppossum in the 50 yard line?
You’re right, it is becoming increasingly unwatchable and veers frequently into embarrassing.,.
It’s not going to be used as before. It’s going to be put in the same place as it was, so the opposing team has to enter the field through it. Also, it will provide a shelter for Randy the Logger. He’ll emerge from it with his chainsaw when we score, then return to its poofy darkness… sort of like an inflatable cuckoo clock.
Did anyone happen to go to both Portland area practices, one for UO, one for OSU? OSU’s operation was much better done.
You hit up both?
Yes, Beavers had double the fans at theirs. It was nicely done.
That’s good to hear
Wasn’t the weather a factor favoring the Beavs turnout?
Still, really good to hear, “OSU’s operation was much better done.”
@oneoldbeav,
This was my first public event outside of attending an actual game, so I can’t compare it to others the Beavers have held in the past.
It wouldn’t qualify it as a /giant/, public showing, but Mountainside High School was built very recently & it is a large school. Its parking lot looked full. They did have people directing vehicles in the lot as to where to find available parking spaces.
For the amount of families that came, there seemed enough to do. There were several tables set up for ticket purchases as well as a couple activities for those who brought children. While I didn’t bring my family, I could imagine with younger children, you could spend perhaps 40 min – 1 hour without too much trouble, and leave conveniently if you had other plans in your day.
It felt organized; an easy experience I think best describes it.
They done good?
So, was it a weekend of turnaroundS??
MBB: No, as expected. Tinkle did make some vanilla remarks about taking 3 or 4 new guys to fill out the roster. “…depends on who is available”.
FOOTBALL: Maybe. Good turnout, not seeing an emphasis on MR in the press, like the idea that many segments were timed. The impression is that JS runs a pretty tight ship, anyone who was there notice how the assistant coaches conducted themselves?
Still,there is that inflatable helmet.
Comments?
BASEBALL: Depends….on your point of view.
Some will say no actual turnaround due to the level of competition, wind, lack of scoring on Saturday, 3 errors in the two games vs 1 error in previous FIVE games, and too small a sample.
Others will say, yes, these two games look like a turning point. Because: Beav pitchers stopped the flood of free bases, giving up a total of 7BB’s and ZERO HBP’s in two full games. And, because, the bats were working, not vs a single arm, but against several pitchers (and not just wind aided!).
BTW: Beavs RPI has moved up to #6
What am I missing?
And, does this from Lundeberg make any difference regarding the CW series which runs Thursday through Saturday this week?
“Kenyon Yovan, Oregon’s top pitcher, is throwing the opening game of today’s (Sunday) rain-caused doubleheader with Washington. Yovan probably won’t be available until the finale of next week’s Civil War series.”
One note on level of competition, Missouri State was/is ranked. It was on the road and according to the commentators the Friday AM starter for them is suppose to be pretty good. I’ll take the two wins!
Not just good but an MLB prospect according to the game commentary….
Not sure Yovan is their best pitcher. Of course I might be a tad biased. He was their top closer last year and part of this year up until a couple of weeks ago I think, when he got moved to their Saturday night starting spot. He’s good, but he hasn’t faced too many teams as a starter and is 3-1.
Mercer is still their ace. Their pitching situation is pretty similar to Oregon State’s. They have 1 to 2 really good pitchers, but after that they get pretty thin. Their run support is really lacking though, which is where OSU should have the advantage this weekend(not to mention home field). Gone are the days of oregon hitters leaning in to draw a walk on hit by pitch. Their hitter also lack patience at the plate.
I was up in Seattle for Oregon/Washington Friday night. Pretty rainy evening and you could tell the wet ball caused a few bad throws, but despite that, neither team had much offensive firepower. I think the final was 2-1, and all 3 runs came pretty early on when it was the wettest.
Oregon does have a decent group of fielders, but 3rd base looked like a weak spot, as well as right field.
Looking forward to Heimlich vs Mercer Thursday night
(Mercer threw 120 pitches Friday night, but last I checked he is still starting Thursday’s game)
Good insight, my comment about pitcher was referring to Missouri State’s starting pitcher but maybe that was not clear. Who’s going this weekend?
I was responding to Lundberg’s quote above
copy that
Re: Football (coaches conduct)
Can’t comment heavily.
During portion OL unit broke off to do what I am guessing was a blocking drill (where members lined up opposite one another & one side held up cushion pads?), Michalczik stood maybe 3-5 yards behind the line that were holding the pads, hunched in a wide stance watching rather intently. He seemed actively involved.
Also recall during OL/DL match ups, there were occasional exchanges between Michalczik & his unit & Suiaunoa with D-line, maybe giving feed back to particular players before the next set of players lined up.
Thanks, Lancer. Appreciate the observations.
Madrigal should be returning this weekend too. Hopefully will give OSU an emotional lift.
OT RIP R. Lee Ermey…would love to have seen that guy go to work on Bike Smiley
The Gunny death scene is possibly one of the best scenes ever.
What is your major malfunction?!!
And Harry Anderson
Fwiw, regarding spring football camp, I’ve been chatting with a dude who is close to the team and has been around for most practices the last couple of years and this year. He says the team morale overall is just so much higher this year than under Anderpants.
Of the players, he says “everyone says how much they love it more and enjoy playing.”
Says practices have been “very sharp” and that “we are in good hands” with Smith and crew.
Also confirmed that Mason Moran has moved over to WR now and is no longer a QB, but says he seems to be picking up the new position well.
I’ve never heard a player say the old coaching staff was better.
The proof will be the on field results in the fall
Seth Collins to Texas Tech?
Blessed ??
I hear they have some nice media closets there.
We finally hear from Trent Bray in a GT piece, not a single “aw shucks” or “searching for an identity”.
A pretty decent brand of coach speak, including, ““I want to see what I’ve been seeing,” he said. “Continue to get better, continue giving great effort at every practice. That’s what we’re after…
We have a good group of young guys. We’re on the beginning of building.”
So far, Riley seems to be in the background……..or asleep.
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-football-bray-sees-progress-from-beavers-linebackers/article_3610a205-386a-5923-af8d-6b4a4eafe0b2.amp.html?__twitter_impression=true
Would like to have seen an emphasis on improving tackling and an indication that progress is being made.
I am pessimistic about Bray and hope the Tibesar can raise standards if necessary. I suspect Bray spent too much time with Riley and Banker.
From what I’ve heard from Nebby fans here in Nebraska, they liked him as a coach. They kept telling me it was the DC’s holding him back from allowing him to really coach. I mean, look at who he had as “mentors/DC’s” at OSU and Nebby. Incompetent coaches who don’t pay attention to detail. Trent Bray appears to be on the same page with coach Tibesar with “continue giving great effort at every practice”. This is what the coaches are wanting more than focusing on Scheme/assignments.
“Would like to have seen an emphasis on improving tackling and an indication that progress is being made. “
Up till now, Bray has been pretty quiet but Tibesar’s comments emphasizing the importance of tackling have been pointed out here often. Still, Bray doesn’t directly address indications that progress is being made in tackling as a specific item.
Here’s a question for everyone, although I’m not certain how much Bray had to do with the overall play of Burfict: How’d ya like to see Bray develop another Vontaze Burfict in Corvallis? Seriously, would that attitude be welcome?
I wouldn’t, but I don’t like cheap shot artists and I think some of the penalties are costly in terms of giving opponents additional downs and field position. Players can be aggressive AND smart, which is my preference.
I don’t expect Burfict meets the “High Output Low Ego” model emphasized by current staff.
No
There’s ‘playing with effort’ and ‘playing out of control.’ The second is not helpful.
Here’s a link to Coach Tibesar after Monday’s practice that was posted on Oregon State’s Football page. You don’t need a facebook account to watch this video.
https://www.facebook.com/BeaverFootball/videos/10155250478216345/
Thanks for the link.
I was unable to make out the question around 1:17 to which Tibs responded “You’ll have to ask the HC, that’s beyond my pay grade”?
It was “Why did you use the inflatable helmet at the scrimmage?!?”
“Tibs”sounds too weak for a D coordinator. How about “‘T-Bar” or “‘Bar” instead….
Well hell, neither of those work, just realized I had his name wrong, BUT:
T-Sar or “Taser!” Obvious allusion AND cheesy…perfect sports metaphor.
Maybe “Mr. T”…..?
I pity the poor fool who don’t listen to him!
Announcer: “The Trojans got “Tazed”” on that possession with a timely blitz call, and now “Crazy Leg Colleto’s going to get a chance to put six more on the scoreboard! Reser is rockin!”!”
They call him Mr Tibbs.

SARS sounds manly.
How about “The Tsar of Corvallis”.
Along the lines of “how much are you going to do live tacking in practice.”
Thanks
Is this Phil Knight’s response to OSU bringing back T&F?(at least women’s team so far)
Part of me is a tad jealous that they just need to snap their fingers and they are just handed over brand new athletics facilities whenever they want, but isn’t this just a tad overkill for a college track facility that will never fill up other than for the occasional olympic trials held there?

What is that in the foreground…..looks little bit like a big wiener….
My guess is it will display times, distances and points for the teams at the meet. Here’s what University of Illinois display looks like:

Taggart is the spin doctor at FSU already. His starting qb is under Tallahasse police investigation for selling/using whacky weed but WIllie says nothing to see here.
He forgot the Duck lesson, he’s supposed to say “We smoked it all.” Then he can return to speeding down the highway.,,,
OT:
I understand there was a recent expose’ of the poor safety record held by Allegiant Air. Then I come across this season highlight video for WBB and, sure enough, at 8:22 in the vid, it appears Rueck and his gals flew Allegiant.
Wonder what airlines Barnes uses?

They dodged death! Makes the gals even cooler :)
Wouldn’t surprise me to see Smith pick up another in state pledge in the near future. Nothing concrete, just a hunch. If it’s happenimg I’m sure you’ll start seeing Sedge/Nemec/Blitz tease it first, before it’s announced. Seems to be the way these things are revealed these days.
They love to bamboozle all that is OSU
I think the team just tips them off in advance of an announcement, in order to maximize coverage.
Thinking back to last year, Oregon dominated the headlines this week with all of their Spring game centered verbal commitments, which were staged to all come out in succession and keep them in the news. Maybe we’re trying to set up an announcement of our own to break up the monotany this year?
We’ll see
Haven’t followed recruiting much in past years. Does it seem there are more visits, updates, etc with the the new staff or am I just now getting with the 21st century of recruiting? Seems like there is a lot of buzz with guys being on campus and getting to know the coaching staff and culture even if they are only sophomores or juniors in high school.
I’ve casually followed recruiting for Oregon State over the last 4-5 years and yes, there is a lot more information out there in regards to spring visits. The biggest aspect is the recruits visiting are giving positive feedback to their visits. There is definitely a culture change within Oregon State Football.
Early signing period has put a bigger sense of urgency to host visits earlier than in the past. Also, teams are allowed to have official visits in the Spring now. Before this year they could only host officials starting after Labor day(or some date around labor day)
Wilner with a breakdown of the pac 12 AD salaries. How is Barnes the 2nd highest paid???
https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/04/18/salaries-for-pac-12-athletic-directors-no-surprise-at-the-top-change-needed-at-the-bottom/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
I see by the update in the linked piece that the Seattle Times reports the AD at UW (lowest paid in the PAC) is in line for a raise to get her up to only a quarter million lower than Barnes is paid.
Nearly a QUARTER MILLION less than Barnes for an AD who just made the switch to Adidas and has hired THREE COY’s in her two years on the job!
But, but….Barnes keeps those contraband candy bars out of Goss and has that inflatable helmet!
SHEESH !!
How is Barnes 2nd highest paid? Simple. We are apparently morons.
*chumps
That too
Regarding Wayne Tinkle- Our favorite background checker, Danny Moran throws softball questions in a “season review” Q&A. Sounds like Tinkle is expecting a lot from the bigs he recruited, speaks as if they will be P-12 ready. Tinks likes to compare this recently completed season to the 5-27 and point to progress, I personally think that’s fools gold, but Danny boy let him get away with it. I guess proof will be in the performance next season like most things in life.
I think Danny Moron is on thin ice with OSU Athletics, and I wouldn’t be surprised that until he ultimately leaves or is let go he won’t be playing hardball with any coaches. Is he doing OSU Baseball stories? If so I really can’t believe in any Beaver fan that reads his articles in regards to that sport because he has zero credibility.
Well there was an 11 game improvement over 2016, however, the qualifier is that the conference was horrible. His failure to recruit a skilled PG remains his most glaring weakness as a HC. in addition, he doesn’t attend many of the practices according to someone that is close to the program….i find that difficult to be true. The beavs do have some talent but I’m not sure that’s enough to get them over the hump.
Can anyone verify the above? Tinkle does not attend many of the team’s practices? That cannot be true.. Are we talking out-of-season “practices” due to recruiting trips or various other commitments? or are you saying he doesn’t attend in-season practices? If the latter, wow..
OT: I was just curious about other expansions in football stadiums across the country…came across this from last year about Wisconsin’s stadium adding a terrace above Loge and club seating: https://footballstadiumdigest.com/2017/01/camp-randall-stadium-upgrades-pitched/
I like how they incorporated a walkway around the front of the terrace to where fans can still walk around inside the stadium instead of having to walk around in a U shape instead.
Curious if anyone who attended the event at Mountainside or has insight on practices has heard anything about Jaydon Grant. Came across this article tonight:
http://pamplinmedia.com/wlt/99-sports/306530-183959-jaydon-grants-unlikely-commitment-to-football
Hoping with more experience he could find a role.
I have no clue, but he was always one of those guys mentioned as intercepting passes last year in practice.
Hoping he breaks out this year as he seems like a ball hawk.
Gotta love the caption to a pic in the GT of a very frustrated duck during last years baseball CW. Wish I could post the pic, but it is linked below.
“Oregon’s Ryne Nelson prepares to slam his bat after striking out to end the game during last years Civil War series. The win clinched the PAC-12 title for Oregon State.”
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-beavers-look-to-continue-civil-war-dominance/article_3de4ea1b-aaca-5ae3-80b3-e979c72b1f2d.html
Love that it looks like an Oregon State home game, despite being down at PK Park in Eugene.
I was at that game and it was probably 80/20 OSU fans, plus a ton of empty seats.
It’s a really nice ballpark too, but duck fans don’t turn out. I’d recommend any Beaver fans who haven’t been to road game, check it out next year.(or dont we have some mid week games there this season still?)
They should have just stuck to wrestling.
For those of you who got blocked by the spam detector, you’re now good to go.
Spam……….grilled or fried?
Oh fried all the way
Absolutely…
Spam Musubi for the win
Civil war thread?
Generic CW thread programmed to post at 3:30 unless Angry edits it into oblivion after turning down his amp and dreaming up something much more provocative!
Haha. No that’s fine.
It amazes me people think a GA QB is the answer. Like GA might have been the worst QB talent evaluator in all of NCAA football from 2014-2017. And some Beaver fans are so loyal/hopeful they still believe someone he recruited is the answer. This amazes me. Then, you watch Luton’s film or game action and see he’s terrible. So there’s that. And then there is the fact that nobody else offered him. It truly shows the phenomena of bias, loyalty, blind faith, etc. The mind is a really fucked up thing.
Well, I know mine is….
They don’t really have much choice. I guess Coletto is the other option but he’s going to have to win the job. If he can’t then I guess that’s that.
I would imagine they’re having Luton focus on shorter yardage higher completion rate type passing, which will be something new to him haha. If he can develop some touch he might develop into serviceable/good enough for now status.
Yeah, agree with this. I don’t think Luton is The Answer, but he may well be our best bet for this year. Coletto may have more upside but is super raw (was a backup at JC last year no?)
Also, I do think that the offensive issues last year had a lot more to do with coaching than quarterbacking. Think they made Luton look worse than he is.
That being said, even IF JS is great (jury’s definitely still out), this year will still suck. First year coach, new (and pretty different) system, mediocre talent. So if Coletto is the future, maybe we just take the hit now and get a head start on 2019.
The fact is you have to play the best qb you have. If its Luton then whatever. It’s not like we can get Petras (sp) back. I’m more inclined to believe that Smith can play to the advantages of who ever is playing, to the point of running every down if they have to.
Let’s talk about our best bet to solidify the QB position with our next recruiting class. It certainly sounds like we have Hank Bachmeier seriously considering Oregon State. He’s rated 4* by the ratings sites, Nemec says he’s the “#5 Pro Style QB in the nation”, blah blah blah.
I don’t care what the recruiting sites and Nemec have to say. What do you guys think of his film?
Is he the next Sean Mannion or the next Spencer Petras (missed it by that much..)
He sounds very intrigued by the idea of having 3 QB coaches on the team(Smith, Lindgren, Riley) to mentor him through college. Riley, for all of his warts, has produced some pretty good pro talent during his time with OSU, so I can see why QBs would be attracted to that.
Really feels like Bachmeier is the guy who could have the biggest impact in getting this program turned around, if he comes here, which makes him possibly the highest profile recruit for OSU in almost a decade(Cooks, Quizz….who else belongs up there?)
https://www.hudl.com/profile/3662704/Hank-Bachmeier
Hey but Gary Andersen thought he was a good QB and nobody else wanted him. Think about that combination for a second.
What happens if / when Smith names him the starter…? I don’t think anyone here says Luton is the “answer”, but he probably is the best guy for this year.
If Luton is only here for 1 more year, I don’t see any point in anointing him the starter and taking away development time from one of the younger guys who will help the team in a year or two, when we are starting to expect results. Nobody has expectations for this year above what happened last year. Maybe we win 2 games? 3 seems like a pipe dream. Look at how much talent we are losing on both sides of the ball to NFL/Injury/Medical Retirement. The deck is stacked against this team doing anything next year. Might as well develop some young guys.
If Luton plans to apply for an extra medical hardship year, I’d be more ok with him starting this year, but currently he hasn’t applied and will be graduating at the end of the season. The QB who plays this year isn’t going to make this team a good team, regardless of who it is.
You aren’t wrong about the outlook for the upcoming season… but Play the best guy at every position. Regardless of age, class. Who knows if the team looks decent and they have a senior QB, a high school stud could want to come play right away, maybe not if you’re starting a young QB
GA also had Petras on the way, and now he’s not.
It became clear the day after the 9 hire that OSU has systemic issues that make less of anything or anyone that doesn’t conform to its specific dysfunctions.
The offense sucked because any QB (or any position) was a lesser QB than they could be because their OC and O staff were lesser than they could be because their head coach was lesser than he could be because the system didn’t accept him in lieu of a quitter.
So he became one himself.
Who knows? Maybe Blount will step up.
