No Greg Street, but I still don’t think umps are going to let the Beavs win. There will be a lot of pressure on the umps from the crowd.

Hope I’m wrong, but that’s how it was last year, and this year Luke is actually pitching, so I’m not optimistic about getting a fair game.

Oh, and Go Beavs!

  1. Yeah. The pitchers on the other side can throw it into the crowd and it would still be a strike I’m sure. And every pitch of Heimlich’s- even if perfectly in the strike zone will be called a ball. Be prepared for the WORST officiating you’ve ever seen.

    • Reading these two comments with a non-alcoholic, Beaver hangover, the umps didn’t imagine pitches hitting the batter and the bullpen did pretty well. Who knew!

  2. I’ll disagree.

Betting line for today Beavers favored $345 to win a $100. Largest favorite of all 4 games.

To win the Series–$100 to win $200, biggest favorite in the tourney.

  3. I have no idea on the process, but can one assume that Greg Street did not make the cut this year? I’m not “blessed” like every recruit that receives an offer from OSU on Twitter states, but no Street is at least a minor miracle for us fans!

    • Not too excited about the “ump cam” , but it does have the advantage of not having to listen to “professional” commentators.

  4. Luke not at all sharp, Adley earning his keep. 37 pitches and finally out of the t2.
Tied at 1 on bb, single, and only the 4th sacrifice by Tarheels.

Per Parker, plate ump has “stingy” zone…for both teams.

  5. Boy he just needs to get a few over the plate and let his defense carry him. I think if he gets out of this without too much damage he’s got a chance to settle in.

Bats will have to carry us today

  6. Whole team looks off. Error by grenier misplayed ball by Kwan. Not what we have seen all year. Disappointing start.

  7. b6, one down, runners at 1 and 2, Grenier up. 6-4 heels bringing in their closer.
    Warts? Sac with 1 down?

EDIT: Aaaannnnd an inning ending 6-4 DP.

  8. That double play feels like the dagger. Hard to hit a HR today so need long rallies, and we just blew one. Might not see another.

    • They all agree umpire blew the call. Runner could have been called out three times. On the initial tag, and the runner came off the bag twice in the slide.

      Can’t challenge the call.

    • Clearly out in replay, but I can see how it would be tough in real time. Failure is no instant replay option for the call.

  9. I know this is baseball, but FUCK we can’t catch a break today. Seems like two innings worth of outs our defense, ump, and luck I da Beavs left on the field today. Feels like if we just get one or two of those outs, this game is easily tied-up.

  10. Absolutely awful at bat by Kwan… looks at two easy strikes, then takes a ball, and then looks at strike three… leaves them loaded without taking the bat off his shoulder.

  11. Does anybody but me think Grenier was probably safe on that pitchout? My stream turned a little blocky so it was hard to tell on the replay.

  12. This is no excuse but pulling the time slot they did today is worse for the Northwest Beavs then the NC’s who are used to hot humid. 100 at field level and Beavs wearing black.

    • Good news. They battled despite the horrible start. We lost our cushion but they showed how good they are even when they sleepwalk through a game.

    • I didn’t see the game, but I can imagine it’s rather hard to stay lively vs a biased crew. To have to throw a tighter strike zone, can’t be an easy mental exercise.

      • While the umps made serious mistakes, I didn’t feel they were biased. Anyway, with all the HBP, and errors, the L cannot be blamed on them.
Luke is human (extraordinarily strong mentally), off days are gonna happen; poor timing for this one. Hope he gets another chance to showcase his talent in Omaha.

        • I agree. Frankly it’s their own fault. As many self inflicted issues as they had, they kept it within 2. They’re still in this thing and if they play like they’re capable, they’ll be fine

          • +1, definitely not umps. Both teams had a run “taken away”. Bad call at third, plus NC losing a RBI double by hitting the umpire

  13. This team could not afford to lose the first game. While they may have the best hitting club in recent history, they do not have the pitching depth to come out of the loser bracket early. probably 2 and done.

  14. The 3 unearned runs the difference between W and L. Next game, if Fehmel can keep it under 5 runs, we win — if not, it will be a coin toss. Beavs have won it all in the losers bracket with less talent, hopefully they go down fighting and get a couple back.

  15. Beavs may be picking up multiple football verbals in the next 24 hours again. Hearing a commitment video is holding one up.

          • If you do a mediocre job at OSU and shit on them twice, apparently you’re a neat deal.

So… maybe I do care a little bit. I don’t care enough to read crap about the loser program sucking the joy out of my college football experience on a thread about a great program that does things right.

You can probably see the dichotomy as well. It’s a little hard to miss.

          • Sweet! Does this mean you will finally go Fuck off and ruin some other school’s forum? I think a new school would look good on you.

        • Hey recruits…

If you’re reading this, know that OSU football doesn’t have any ethical standards. This means nobody, especially you, should have any trust in them.

Of course, if you’ve been programmed in the white jeezus philosophy stuff, you can probably make it all work for you for as long as that veil keeps you blinded from reality.

It won’t make the rote lessons to be learned expand to forms unknown to the median. In fact, you’ll be lucky to reach the median outside the QB and WR positions. But at least know that OSU doesn’t give one shit about football doods having any kind of honor.

          • Moot point, Jack. My supervisor doesn’t have any ethical standards and he’s still my supervisor. We know the Prez doesn’t have any either. Welcome to 2018.

          • One can try.

Otherwise I would just cower and come out on the other side looking like the cowards that populate most of this country at the moment.

        • So there you go.

You said I cared. That’s how much I care.

I care more about the kids than I do my alma mater. I sorta expect my school to do the same. When they obviously don’t, and you want to make it a game, I’ll fucking make the dishonor of OSU football a game.

  16. Wow Luke played like shit. If he does THAT every game would we be so accepting of his child molestation situation which is at best sketchy and at worst, truly heinous and inexcusable?

Wow Beavs better win this next one or else! Expect petitions!!!

      • I really don’t know how you follow up on that pos act about child molestation being a joke to you.

What fan base are you from?

You can’t be from UNC, because they only post on fake blogs available to the whole student body.

I’m guessing you’re one of the LSU fucks who like to racist their way around the world. Your kind give s me great pause. You make me think our democracy might not be so great if dumbshits like you can conglomerate enough to elect representation so that you feel comfortable enough to wantonly make fucking sick jokes about sexual assault.

  17. Wow, Beavs laid a big stinking pile of dog shit in Omaha that smelled even worse due to the humidity. We made the six hour drive down for this?
Conditions brutal with heat, blazing sun, and high humidity. First bad sign was team coming out in BLACK unis. Casey should have nuked those.
Second bad sign, Grenier f’ing up a routine grounder on the first play.””
The kicker was Luke hitting a batter. Something was off and it got worse from there.
Keystone cops routine defensively. This looked like the team that played at Utah. WTF?
Props to Eisert for keeping us in reach, but Nate was too late by one batter. You could see he was getting tired and his pitches getting up in the zone.
After all that, they have chance for the miracle win with the perfect guy at the plate and he watches three strikes go by without swinging. Wow.

  18. How did Parker sound on the radio? Hopefully nobody left him alone last evening and confiscated his belt and shoelaces.

    • Apparently fucktwits like you assume anger when something as droll as poorly executed third-rate sports at a school that doesn’t care about their third-rate sports but seem to think they care enough to make it their primary revenue sport… seeps into a conversation about sports done well.

Yesterday was an excellent day. It was joyful and productive. You could say the rich get richer.

Enjoy your fucktwit endeavors. I didn’t mean to make you feel the sads about them. I just don’t want to hear about them… because they are the sads.

      • You don’t want to hear about them, you you visit and comment a blog dedicated to them. That’s Jacksense right there.

        • Nope.

I’m simply going to respond to them on threads dedicated to something honorable. But fucktwits like you can’t differentiate between warnings that posting dishonorable shit will garner like responses so long as people post that shit. And I will speak to recruits about this openly.

I do not sanction the re-rehire of Mike Riley. It’s dishonorable at best. It’s scurrilous and disgusting as a norm. It’s cowardly and inbred and just disgusting.

But if you’re of the cult that wants to normalize garbage and call it gold, then you’re a fucktwit.

          • I didn’t get to the thread due to life. So when I scrolled up from the bottom, your post about OSU Feces was the first I saw.

            Hold on…

There. Does that fix your sads?

          • I still don’t have a score from this thread, as I was hoping to find.

I only have sad people spamming sad stuff and complaining when someone calls out their sad shit for what it is.

Maybe I should go spam football threads with garbage and imagine that anyone responding isn’t in the right to respond, like you all are doing. You will note that I don’t take part in those discussions anymore… because OSU Football is dead to me… unless you want to make it a zombie… at which point I will gladly point to the flesh falling off the bones.

  19. That game was 4:22 of torture. I was comfortably setup at home, must have been tons of fun at the stadium. My clothes went in and out of style three times. My wife cruised by at 2:00, after two hours, and said “it’s only the top of the third, did you record this?”

They need to address pace of play, or more correctly no-play. Winner declared after last full inning played after the three hour mark, maybe? I know…I know… tradition… purity of the game…blah..blah..blah. JB

  20. Well it is definitely an uphill battle when you lose the first game but the Beavers have a couple of arms left and Luke should be good to go Thursday or Friday if the Beavers can string together a couple wins.

  21. luck of the beavs – rain delay today in Texas/Ark game. I’ve never checked on Omaha weather patterns – maybe they are climate-change affected – but if triple-digit heat, high humidity, frequent thunder and lightening storms are the norm for this time of year, perhaps a venue change should be considered when the present contract expires.

  22. Lundeberg reports both Casey and Barnes spoke at a commencement exercise in Omaha for five players and two assistants.
Easy to guess which one said this:

““We want them to be the best men, husbands, fathers, sons and workers they can become,” … “Sometimes we get on their tail pretty good, but I think the best learning room on campus is the arena for us. That’s where you learn life lessons … and learn to not walk away when things become difficult.”…
“Our country is starving for leadership. We’ve got a lot of cowards in this country right now, and these guys are leaders.”

    • Refreshing, honest and to the point.

Role models are important, but lousy ones given credence create a cult of personality.

If it is true to say of the lazy that they kill time, then it is greatly to be feared that an era which sees its salvation in public opinion, this is to say private laziness, is a time that really will be killed: I mean that it will be struck out of the history of the true liberation of life. How reluctant later generations will be to have anything to do with the relics of an era ruled, not by living men, but by pseudo-men dominated by public opinion.

  23. Hey AngryBeavs, I have a few questions to ask you, but I want to ask you personally. Could you email me so I can talk to you? I couldn’t find a way to email you.

  24. OT: Uber driver in Omaha claimed her brother played b-ball on the GP team. Rattled off Ralph Miller and Jimmy Anderson so seemed legit.

Walked into a bar in Omaha and a guy says “welcome to Omaha and thanks for taking Riley back.”

  25. Fehmel needs to be on today. Hitting will be there.

After that the schedule isn’t too bad. In theory Abel can go in the next game, with Luke or Bryce in the next rounds. None of the games would be elan everyone available type situation.

  26. I know that this pitcher pitches to contact, but two hits to the warning track and a caught line drive…I think it’s a matter of time before we put him on the ropes.

    • That is the beauty and ugliness of baseball. Beavs hit several line drives against the Tar-heels that were caught, while the heels had several miss hits that were either played poorly by the Beaver-D or just flat lucky to fall on the green. Beavs just need to string hits, hbp, walks, and/or errors together, I don’t care how they come — get the next guy up to the plate at all cost, and don’t be selfish.

  27. Damn! Hot again today – cools off the rest of the week with lightening storms predicted, however. If the Beavs can just get through this game, the weather will be more accommodating.

  28. Beavs might win today and even advance, but last year combined with what I’ve seen this year tells me this team isn’t mentally strong. Not mentally ready for the atmosphere. Casey warts showing on that issue.

  29. A week ago we were playing championship baseball. I don’t even know who these guys are. Rutchman overthrowing a SB attempt. Pop-up bunt. Fielding error in CF.

    FFS.

It was a fun season. This is disappointing.

  30. Hemingways definition of a hero was one who shows ““Grace under pressure.”
Beavs are zeroes. I put this on their coach. He has to have them mentally prepared, and hasn’t for years in these big games.

  31. How many pitches did LH throw last game? 50+? he could in theory come back on 2/3 days rest, not that it matters… this game looks about over…

  32. I guess we should have dog-piled after the SR win.

That did not look like a 2-and-out team. Well this will free up my weekends and I can finally cancel my Dish service.

  33. This Washington P has looked like crap thus far. Seems like he’s getting lucky. We should be able to get a big inning. If we do, great, but I don’t like our mental makeup. If the environment gets to you this badly and obviously then you deserve to lose and be sent packing.

  34. I wasn’t a fan of the idea to pitch our finesse pitcher today against a team that’s already faced him this season. Hope it doesn’t end meaning we have too big of a hole for the bats to make up for.

    • Yeah I don’t either. Would have loved to see Abel throw today.

Reminds me of BF getting knocked around the second time he faced LSU last year. Wasn’t fooling anyone.

  35. Well UW just pulled their starter… ESPN showed a grapic earlier that said he was the only UW pitcher that did not get blasted by our bats this year… let’s see if they can wake up and get some hits.

  36. My comments above look bad now that we have the lead, but I’m still really unimpressed with the team’s mindset through the first 14 innings. It will take more than 1 good inning to erase that. WA pitching has looked awful, so we should be up 10 on these bozos. Still under-performing, but I’ll take a W any way we can get it.

  37. I’m not watching and only have occasional radio. What was UW pitcher’s pitch count when he got pulled?
He only had 1 on with 2 outs at the time, right?
What a boneheaded move by Meggs, unless the starter was injured or something

  38. So our #1 and #2 guys both threw less than 60 pitches… they could in theory come back on short rest, say 3-4 days? Setting us up with a decent shot at the next 3 games if we close this one out…

    • That’s correct. And the main reason Casey took Luke out, I think.

It was smart to get him out of there when it was obvious he was rattled and didn’t have dominant control.

  39. I thought maybe it was just because I was watching. If they came out and dominated I was going to apologise for jinxing them on the first game.

Now it sounds like the whole team has mentally blown apart.

  40. Weather delay recruiting niblet.

Time to soil the world series thread again. Beavs have a very good chance of picking up local TE Luke Musgrave today. He’s pretty under recruited right now, being from Bend. Has a CAL and Utah State offer currently. Some think he’s holding out for an Oregon offer and will immediately go there, but I think the Beavs will land him, as early as today.

This Oregon State football recruiting report has been brought to you by Dihonorable Fuckwits.
What’s up wit dat? It’s Fuckwits!!

    • I know we have been ringing our hands because we lack an elite QB recruit but overall I am pleasantly surprised with the way recruiting has been going this early in the cycle.

NiceBeaver what are you quick thoughts regarding overall recruiting so far?

      • On defense, they’ve been doing pretty well. We have more total verbal pledges by Mid-June than I can ever remember for OSU. Have heard Mama Machado say on her podcast multiple times that Coach Smith won’t let a recruit give his verbal pledge unless he’s “all in” or totally on board to stick with it through signing day. If that is true, then you would think we have a good chance of hanging onto most of these guys.
On offense, we still only have a JC WR in Clark and a freshman ATH/WR in Gould, so that side has been a little slow to build. QB would be nice to get figured out sooner rather than later, to build around.

And yes, we all know verbal pledges mean nothing until the guy is signed and admitted into the school. Some people still just enjoy following this stuff.

    • Apparently the ducks read ab. Was texted by someone who says Musgrave was offered by oregon shortly after I posted this.

  41. So can Abel keep pitching after the break? Threw 17 pitches… then a 2+ hour delay, or if it gets suspended until tomorrow?

Also, I remember the bases were loaded, but what was the count?

  42. Instructions for Beaver Baseball 2018

    1. Motivate with thoughts of unfinished business
    2. Work hard all offseason to hone skills
    3. Derp at Arizona and Utah but pull it together and finish the regular season strong
    4. Steamroll the opposition in regional
    5. Sweep Big 10 champions with a gutty performance in the super regional, advancing to CWS
    6. Piss it all the fuck away

  43. Could have a lot of weather issues this week. Might delay all games.

High chance of thunderstorms every day this week. No way second game is played tonight. Don’t know if they can get three games in one day.

  44. That last “strike” on Jones…Is Greg Street back?

In fairness he missed one earlier to help Malone’s walk, but damn.

  45. They have a different bounce in their step. Win or lose I want to see them battle. Maybe helped that it’s not 100 degrees now?

    • Well, yeah – 110 degrees in the dugout, 80+% humidity, black shirts, for more than 4 hours. A wonder they didn’t all have heat strokes. I heard North Carolina had a shaded dugout – true?

      • yes, in about the 6th-7th inning it was fully shaded, but yes, their backs were to the sun the entire game. The team, however, stood out along the dugout fence and not on the benches. So they were in the full sun at that point too.

  46. Abel’s final pitch in the 7th to get him looking was not a strike. This ump is garbage and all over the place.

  47. Pretty obvious the baseball team went and read ab during the rain delay. Needed that extra criticism to wake up and realize it was all mental corrections that needed to be made

  48. I wish Jake only pitched to one batter to get his feet wet. They will need all the innings they can get out of him. Great bounce back. Kwan’s injury looks like he is done for the CWS. Grenier is having a bad CWS.

    • Saw a quote from Kwan saying it was just a little tweak and he thinks he’ll be day to day. Maybe just a bad cramp from the heat?

    • Grenier has hit the ball sharply — I’ve seen at least one of his line drives in each game picked out of the air. I believe one of them led to a double against North Carolina. He’s been very unlucky at the most.

  49. Per Lundberg, “Steven Kwan said he took himself out of the game due to a hamstring cramp.”

A day to hydrate and hopefully he’ll be back

  50. With Kwan going out seemed like these guys had their backs against the wall. Madrigal and Rutschman became the table setters and our 6789 guys gobbled it up(Gretler, Anderson, Nobach, Malone). Props to Jones who came in with the 2 rib double to tie it up, that was probably the turning point in the game, Beavs smell blood!

  51. OT… Gonna be a rough open to the markets this morning.

It’s been a predictable week… except that some experts who drive the central bank hysteria (and had the bond market completely wrong in the last two months) are being apologetic to the point of dismissing the coming 10-2 inversion… that wasn’t going to happen, according to them.

The whackadoodles are starting to CYA by hoarding cash. Now might be a good time to clear debt and hunker down. I wouldn’t even make fun of gold bugs right now. It looks like that stopped clock will be right soon enough.

And I just saw the twitter exchange between angry and Fentress. You should have simply pointed out that the language was so wrong, that the story was never legitimate. Hi Aaron. Was Luke convicted of a felony? Was Luke convicted of anything? Did Luke touch the inside and outside of the naughty bits the O decided to print, despite NEVER BEING CHARGED WITH RAPE, as the law clearly states that action is?

Did the O print those naughty bits to show the dichotomy between the rape story the victim told (that the prosecution in a jurisdiction that has a mandate to believe alleged victims… did not believe) and with what Luke was actually charged… and then the even lesser charge he finally agreed to adjudicate… because we all know that 15 year-olds are wise enough to make such decisions?

Or did they just put it out there for clickbait, exposing the victim almost immediately and making her mother a less than credible source from the get go?

    Yeah… thought so.

That story was a crap hit piece with so many holes and lies that the tool of an author who wrote it left the industry. Where’s his Pulitzer?

Legitimate story, my ass. You’re correct that the truth would have been legitimate to report. But we didn’t get anything remotely resembling it.

You have been sucked into the vortex of lies printed by the O. You are justifying textbook libel per se by calling it a legitimate story. This makes you very very wrong… and suspect in your bias for future “reporting,” not that this is the only example of your poor judgment.

And don’t even get me started on Dolphin Boy. He’s simply evil.

    • So it would seem that they get to hire another coach? How about someone young and dynamic that can recruit offensive players? Because that’s obviously missing right now.

    • Now can we get a real TE coach to come in? Without having too many QB “Cooks in the kitchen” coaches on staff, maybe now we can hone in on getting a QB that will fit JS and Lindgren’s offense? Who will be the 10th coach JS will go out and hire? Another U of Hawaii coach? lol

    • Oregon offered him last night while he was on visit to Oregon State, but he still decided OSU was the right place for him. Nemec had an article with quotes where he basically said OSU feels more like home and the people in our program are his type of people.
This coming from a kid whose uncle is a bit of a duck legend.

This was a really good pickup for OSU/Smith

    • The Ducks offered him last night as Musgrave tweeted it. I was surprised when I saw him tweet his commitment to us this morning. Says to me he’s solid with OSU.

      • That’s what I was posting during the rain delay yesterday. Several recruiting sites/analysts in recent weeks were saying he would be a duck if they offered. (Matt Phrem, Nemec)

But I never got the sense that he would end up at UofO. They already have Herbert’s little bro coming in at TE and are recruiting several others. Their offer to him yesterday felt more like a formality, like “oh shit, Oregon State is about to land a psuedo-duck legacy player, we can’t let that happen, maybe a late offer will help delay things till he ends up elsewhere”

  52. UNC down early. Probably the better matchup for the next game. If they go deep into their bullpen today, they won’t have much left tomorrow. Would probably see criswell start but won’t have much more after him.

    • Pitchers we have available per roster:

      Soph. Mitchell Verburg RH
      http://osubeavers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6669

      RS Junior Sam Tweedt RH
      http://osubeavers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6668

      RS FR Dakota Donovan RH
      http://osubeavers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6652

      Soph Grant Gambrell RH
      http://osubeavers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6655

      Jr Jordan Britton LH
      http://osubeavers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6650

Would tomorrow’s game be treated like a midweek game? Who was our midweek starter this year? I didn’t follow any midweek games this season. I can’t find a UNC roster that shows what hand they bat with like the OSU roster shows. This will depict whether we start a RH pitcher or a LH pitcher based on matchups. I’d say since Heimlich started Saturday and pitched 63 pitches, he’ll be called upon as a relief pitcher if we need him to be. otherwise, it’s pitch by committee to get to the next game. Tar Heels have 17 pitchers available 15 of them are RH 2 are LH. 5 Jr’s, 5 Soph, 6 FR.

Tar Heels Pitchers on Saturday in order are as follows:

      Soph RH Dalatri – 15 Pitches 6/16
      FR LH O’Brien – 26 Pitches 6/16
      SR RH Daniels – 24 Pitches 6/16
      FR RH Lancellotti – 30 Pitches 6/16
      R-Soph RH Hiatt – 23 Pitches 6/16
JR RH Closer Criswell – 34 Pitches 6/16

      Today:
Soph RH Bergner currently at 85 Pitches 6/19

They pitched by committee on Saturday with not letting anyone but the closer pitch more than 1.2 innings that game and pulled off the win. I imagine they did this approach due to the high temps. Paid off for them since they got the win, but it definitely slowed the game down and affected the rhythm/flow of the game. I imagine this was Fox’s game plan for the hot weather to keep his pitchers from over exerting themselves. I understand Pat Casey not taking this approach, but hind sight makes you wonder if we should have done a pitch by committee due to the heat?

      • Verberg was/ is hurt. So he is MIA.
Gambrell has the stuff but can’t seem to deal with pressure.
Tweedt, see above, but could be replayed to injuries.
Britten can throw strikes but stuff is average at best.
Donovan looks the part, but has not pitched much.

  53. Who would you start tomorrow on the bump?

Bring Heimlich back on short rest? Do you want him facing the same UNC team that ate him up on Saturday? Does it matter?

Go with Britton, Chamberlain, or Gambrell and hope they put together a gem and save Luke for the next one?

What about at 1B? Leave Taylor there or play the hot hand Malone?

    • Get this one by committee and go LH against Miss St.

As bad as we played, we were so close to big innings against UNC. I think our bats will get to them and give us the run support to pull it off.

    • Prob Britton or Tweedt. Hope they can get the job done with minimal bullpen help. Gambrell seems to do better when he comes in long relief.

Luke and Bryce for possible games Fri and sat. No real reason to waste them here. They need time to regroup.

      • I would agree with starting Britton if it’s a left on left match up is why we started LH last Saturday. Then we bring in Tweedt then Gambrell for middle relief if needed. Minimize pitch counts to around 35-45 if possible as long as pitchers are effective. I’d say an average of 1.2-2 innings pitched or 40-42 pitches. whichever produces a longer more effective outing.

  54. I dunno if it is just me and the power of hindsight but I don’t get why Casey never seems interested in saving arms. Like Abel could have been pulled an inning earlier and it didn’t seem like there was a real need to go to Mully. All down the stretch it seems like more of an emphasis should have been put on preserving arms. I mean I know you don’t want to end your season with a fresh ace in the bullpen but it seems like a bit more balance in this regard could be had. In the regional Luke threw 115 pitches in a game we won 14-1 and he worked 8.2 innings and 124 pitches in a 8-1 win over Minny. Really seems like too that giving some other guys some work earlier in the season would have the added benefit of possibly building some pitching depth. Again hindsight speaking but even if the Beavers blew a game or two during the season by pulling a starter too early we still would have gotten a national season.

    • If you’ve followed Beaver baseball for the last decade or more, you’d realize that Casey goes with the hot ace as long as they can perform. The reason being is, you don’t take a player out when they’re still throwing strikes. Heimlich should have been pulled earlier on Saturday to preserve his arm, but that’s why I’m not the coach. Second of all, we have good pitchers in the wings, we just haven’t utilized them yet because most of them are freshman. You don’t put freshmen in a situation where they could cave under pressure. Abel has come on stronger than Gambrell has the last 3-5 weeks. So it makes sense why Gambrell hasn’t come in as relief for Abel when Abel is pitching very well down the stretch. Pitching like hitting is streaky as well. You get into a groove and you just go until you can’t.

    • I think Mulholland went in bc he hadn’t pitched in over a week. Needed to get some game action in. With it being a pretty low stress situation, it was fine.

      • yeah, maybe it doesn’t change how much he can pitch going forward if the plan is to just keep him in the reliever role and not push it much beyond 2 or 3 innings.

  55. Game plan tomorrow, get into UNCs bullpen fast. Hiatt probably won’t be available. Offense will have to carry the day again. 10 runs would be the goal.

      • Well if beavs get past UNC tomorrow, would have Luke and Bryce on 5 days rest following short outings. If they return to form, won’t need that many runs per. But it’d be pretty nice.

        • Championship series is too dang close to the bracket play. I really hope to see great things from our largely untested arms…we’ll need them if we get that far.

  56. Respective batting averages of the most recent line-ups:
    MSU OSU
    351 360
    323 319
    292 395
    324 338
    320 391
    244 315
    224 316
    246 275
    261 285

  57. Interesting to see that UNC has a better on base percentage than MSU. UNC better at getting walks and HBP — similar to Duck ball. I would rather our pitchers throw it down the middle and make UNC earn the runs than give them a 5 spot like they did on Saturday.

  58. If Riley is indeed gone (seeing rumors from many different places at this point) does this mean Jack can stop bitching every time we pick up a recruit?

Conspiracy: maybe Riley could have consigned so Smith could get the loan (get the boosters on board)? 50k salary and no real coaching position makes a little more sense if that was he case.

    • jinx

There’s still the matter of our AD being chump enough to even consider re-rehiring him. I wouldn’t be surprised if they re-re-rehired him next year at this point.

But at least someone is doing the right thing for once… maybe… jinx.

I can build from there, as can the numerous others who had my mindset but just silently quit on OSU football… because reason wasn’t going to bust up the density in his sycophants’ minds.

      • Barnes is still kinda terrible. And Ray has now changed to being a bullshit artist in my eyes regarding athletics.

Here’s to hoping he sticks to academics from now on.

        • At the commencement Sunday in Omaha Casey said, “Our country is starving for leadership. We’ve got a lot of cowards in this country right now,”

Any truth to the rumor that he was looking straight at Barnes at the time?

It’s gotta be killing a fighter like Casey to have to have contact with Barnes.

        • Ray has been stellar on the academic side. And the S part of SA has taken a huge leap forward during his time as well, benefiting the entire student body in the process. Yes, he’s a complete nerd who has one catch-all line for sports. But he has increased the value of my diploma tenfold. He’s also overseen a period of expansion, building and increasing alumni participation that was sorely needed.

Those factors outweigh sports by quite a bit. We have a working model of the opposite down here. I’ll take our model every day of the week.

  59. With Riley gone…again…does this make the team as a whole better? This just shows that this is now officially JS’s team and he is indeed the head coach. Curious who the 10th coach will be at this point. I hear Tim Euhus is available to coach. ;) lol joking aside, the next Assistant doesn’t need to be a TE coach per se, right?

    • I’m pretty sure the guy who is actually coaching the TEs is already on the staff, you would think he’d just bump over officially and they’d bring someone else in. Simple Jack sure as hell wasn’t doing it.

      • Musgrave credited Tibesar(initiated contact) as well as Cookus and Wozniak as the main recruiters he talked to. Wozniak is limited i that he isn’t allowed to make visits off campus. I’m all for moving him over to the full time position coach vacancy and then back filling with a new quality control coach.

        • Angry, I think you deserve some of the credit for helping Mike Riley see the light and decide to get the f out of dodge, again.
Maybe that should be at the bottom of your next post.

“If you’re happy to see Mike Riley packing his bags, consider a “thank you” donation to AB”

          • Haha. What makes you say that? You think all the heat? He’s blocked me on Twitter so I doubt it’s that. He just wants another payday and will spin some crap how it was too good an opportunity and Dee told him to go for it, yada yada. Neat deal!

          • I think you helped give a voice to the fans who were unhappy with the rehire. He blocked you for a reason, but then he had to see a similar sentiment coming from other fans and he couldn’t shield himself from everybody.

          • He’ll give some speech about how J Smith has grown so much over the past 6 months and has proven he doesn’t need to have a mentor providing guidance any longer.
“Over the past 6 months, I’ve worked with Jonathan for at least a good 2 weeks, and he has shown me he is now ready to take OSU where they need to be. He no longer needs to operate under my shadow. This is his team now”

          • ^ Both good points.
Yeah I wonder if he was feeling the hate, in general. That group that loves him is getting smaller and smaller with each of his returns.

          • Or it could just be that a new league that wasn’t even announced when he took the job with Smith is offering him another opportunity to be a head coach and like every other member of Smith’s staff would do he’s gonna take it.

            Naw, too simple….

          • He’ll be getting the same payday, regardless of where he works, thanks to Nebraska.

A HC salary working for the Alliance of American Football is projected to be around $500K or less.
So, stay comfy in Corvallis and keep collecting that Nebraska check, or stay comfy in San Antonio but work harder and keep collecting that Nebraska check?
Does anybody think this league will have any staying power and be around longer than the XFL?

          • I think it will last longer than the XFL. They’ll probably use it for retreads and tweeners so the NFL can scout them and see if they missed on anyone. Better than freeloading off colleges for their farm system. I didn’t even know it existed until yesterday, though, and won’t be watching any games. I’d think you’d really have to have no life to spend spring and summer at that type of game.

          • If all he wanted was a paycheck he wouldn’t be coaching at all.

As for rather the AAF will last or not. I think its got a really good shot at succeeding. Its got CBS, streaming plans, smart management, and plenty of seed money.

The XFL failed because it claimed to be something it wasn’t (better than the NFL) and its TV partner (NBC) saw it as a replacement for the NFL after they lost the right’s to the AFC. Had NBC had a more realistic goal the XFL and the league didn’t overhype itself it could have succeeded.

Spring football doesn’t fail because it doesn’t have a market (it does), it fails when the owners have delusions of grandeur. The AAF does not suffer from such delusions, it knows exactly what it is. A compliment to the NFL.

          • As for the “no life” comment. I guess millions of people that attend minor league baseball games every year simply have no life. That is one opinion I guess.

Besides this league will be playing in from February through April. For many parts of America that is prime sit in front of the fire and watch some TV time.

          • Yes, anyone watching football in Feb-April has no life. By the time the Super Bowl rolls around I’m so burnt out on that sport and just want it over. SB is just an excuse to make delicious hoagies and wings once a year.

Minor League ball is an entire culture. People go for the family atmosphere and the quirky mascots and all that. Football doesn’t really have that kind of culture.

          • Must be nice knowing the definition of who does/does not have a life.

I think a person could make a pretty strong argument that dedicating a large portion of your life to a blog that does nothing but talk shit about a school the blogger claims to root for is a pretty strong indication of a guy that doesn’t have a life.

But sure, going to a football game in February is clearly a sign I guess.

San Antonio is officially the 8th team.

          • Anybody spending 3 months indoors sitting by a fire and watching TV has either no life, or a medical condition.

I think this league will fail almost as quickly as the XFL. At least with the XFL, people had the hope that it would be entertaining and worth watching. It took them a few weeks to figure out it wasn’t, and their viewership disappeared.
With this league, fans will know from the outset it will be garbage, and they won’t tune in.
Add to that the XFL 2.0 trying to start up soon, plus an existing Spring League. Market is already saturated before they have their opening kickoff.

Only way it will succeed is if the NFL supplements it. Which they won’t.

Some people think it will succeed because legalized gambling will help it gain an audience.
Pro tip: Easy money will be on San Antonio taking the L.

          • Have to agree with nicebeaver here. The AAF is doomed to fail. Every secondary football league in this country that tried to make it hasn’t. The USFL almost 30 years ago was a dumpster fire. Hell, even the Arena football league which has lasted the longest folded a few years ago and went on hiatus for a year. They came back with a scaled down league that currently only has 4 teams and is barely hanging on.

But if San Antonio gets a team and it gets Riley 3.0 out of here I am all for it.

          • It will likely succeed for a while simply because it is a complement to the NFL. The XFL failed because of poor management. That management is making another run for a money grab based on being a viable professional organization that can leverage a buy-out. But it’s still lousy management with a track record of treating its employees like tools rather than players. Self-starters will succeed within its scope. Most will fail, just as the league will fail.

The AAF’s stated mandates make it a much more viable organization. I think it builds itself into a developmental/relegation league simply because there is currently a vacuum there. It hasn’t stated specifically, but with comments from the likes of Maurice Clarrett, it looks like they will take players out of HS and within that 3 year window the NFL rejects. I can see the best Juco prospects joining it instead of going to the NCAA. I can also see players from spread systems and the NFL waiver wire ending up there for a year or two of NFL development and ending up on Sunday rosters.

          • a blog that does nothing but talk shit about a school the blogger claims to root for

Yay for extremely lazy and stereotypical thought!

If all he wanted was a paycheck he wouldn’t be coaching at all.

I suppose he could be a TV analyst (and make more than the slap in NU’s face we were paying him). But I have more respect for the coaches who drop down to FCS to ply their trade and sate their desires to continue coaching than I do the hangers on to almost-relevance.

      • Thank you for recognizing my overall coaching greatness. I, however, have declined numerous request to rejoin the Beaver staff. We’re still not over the trauma of my first experience in Corvallis.

Autographed picture on it’s way to you!!

PS: There is a $75.00 shipping and handling charge

  60. If Riley really is leaving, I think his service under Smith was appreciated. Smith is young with no head coaching experience. He is taking over a power 5 conference team as a first time head coach – I would think everyone would appreciate having a guy like Riley on staff that you could consult with to get things up and running, e.g. hire a staff and organize your program.

You guys will hate on Mike Riley as a coach – and perhaps the game has passed him by. But he still has a lot of experience and would be an asset to any program. Smith was lucky to have him.

Personally I thought Andersen was an overrated hire – I hated his coach speak and didn’t buy in. I also don’t think Smith is the answer. I hope he turns out to be good because it would be awkward to fire the guy, but in my mind, the rationale for hiring smith was 50% his legacy as a player, 25% his affiliation with Chris Petersen, and 25% fear that he might actually be a good coach and we would miss out on him if another program pulled the trigger.

But what do I know, I’m just the *2nd most rational person that comments on here (* angry@angry might have me beat)

    • You lost any argument from self proclaimed rationality with this statement……………

“You guys will hate on Mike Riley as a coach – and perhaps the game has passed him by. But he still has a lot of experience and would be an asset to any program. Smith was lucky to have him.”

No one that the game has passed by is an asset. To any football program. There are plenty of other experienced “assets” out there that the game has not passed by.

He was coaching tight ends and ADMITTED he had no idea what he was doing. So you are trying to convey here that a coach that has admitted he has no idea what he is doing, as an assistant mind you, is an asset? That’s a guy you want on your coaching staff? A coach is only as good as the assistants he surrounds himself with. ESPECIALLY at Oregon State. Unless your name happens to be Nick Saban.

FFS, you aren’t being rational. At all.

      • “He was coaching tight ends and ADMITTED he had no idea what he was doing.” Teams can only have 10 coaches, OSU has chosen to go with 9 for some reason.

And, by the looks of it, Ol’ Bikey wasn’t recruiting either.

So what exactly does his so called expertise bring? Not coaching, not recruiting, so ummmm, what, donors? Wasn’t that the purpose of bringing in Smith? Onboarding an albatross like MR made/makes no sense.

That coaching spot could be used for someone that can recruit and you know, actually coach.

    • I’m not hating on MR. I’m hating on OSU, my own alma mater, for re-rehiring a quitter. This is a simple business ethic that you just don’t do. We got lucky the first time that he got a boot up his ass in the middle of quitting during another season in 2006. He managed to keep it up until Al died. If you think calling MR a quitter is hating on him, then you need to stop. It’s just what he does. Intelligent organizations observe behavior and adjust to never be burned by it a second time, let alone a third.

Oh… and the game hasn’t passed him by. It’s football, not rocket surgery. Don’t pretend the game is hard. It’s just that some people within the game are soft. Along those same lines, MR helping to build the foundation of a new system shouldn’t give you warm fuzzies. His system was not efficient, save for a lot of work from non-coach staffers run by an efficient bean counter. GA was a sucky hire, but he was direct with the SAs, pushing them to be better students than OSU football has seen in a long long time. What worries me more is that Barnes is on the job. MR’s “experience” is overrated, particularly for the direction JS said he wanted to build and recruit to his system–to reflect a Petey system.

And don’t be mean to yourself. A@A likes to remove all variables then state the obvious about the remaining numbers. While you ignore some variables, your tone is tentative enough to suggest you don’t really believe the apologetic narrative that would seek to make sense of the obvious, OSU re-rehired a quitter.

  61. They should start Heimlich tomorrow. What did he throw, 50 pitches or so? Should be fine.
Or start someone else and have Heimlich ready to come out of the pen early.

    • Agree, throw Heimlich now and get him rested up for next week, if we make it that far.

He pitched earlier in the year on a Tuesday vs Nevada (in a relief role) after his Friday night start @ Utah and then came back and started the following Saturday vs Arizona.

        • good point. just worried if you save him for Friday’s games (if we get there), then he won’t be ready for the CWS finals (also if we get there), which are Mon/Tues/Wed

Like GWH mentioned above, the Finals are too close to bracket play. Why do they force such early final games? Makes for a less interesting season finale when the teams aren’t at full strength.

          • Yeah none of the pitchers have what it takes to pull off what nickerson did in 2006. That was amazing. 3 starts in 8 days. I think he went at least 6 in all three outings.

I say don’t start Luke, have him come back on full rest. UNC isn’t going to be at full strength either and the offense tends to have good days vs non #1#s.

          • What is all this planning shit for potential future games? At this point it is all hands on deck. I don’t care if Heimlich has to come on in relief against UNC. There is no tomorrow if you don’t win today. Win the next game in front of you is all you can do right now. You can’t look past UNC and worry about who would/should be pitching on Friday.

          • Heimlich has shown that he needs nearly full rest to be effective (5-6 days). Even if OSU wins against UNC, they have 2 games against MSU to win. Heimlich would likely go Friday and Fehmel Saturday. It isn’t ideal for the championship, but every other team is in the same boat w.r.t. burning starting pitchers.

      • I agree that Heimlich will be better in a relief role at the CWS. Beavs need to get a significant lead (like 3+ runs) to settle the opposing crowd down, then put in Luke. He plunked three guys in the back between the numbers on Saturday because the pressure got to him.

  62. It costs all involved extra $$$ to stay an extra week waiting around for the final — I guess Omaha is not that interesting? Visit Warren Buffet’s house?

  63. Arkansas/Texas Tech has been postponed until tomorrow. The 6pm central start tomorrow for the Beavs is right in that window of when the weather isn’t cooperating today. Hopefully they get to play.

    Florida eliminated Texas earlier.

  64. Thunderstorms very likely tomorrow. Just real bad luck with weather out there this year.

With the weather factor, it’ll be better to throw a bullpen game. If the game gets suspended, that pitcher won’t have been wasted.

It’ll be tough to get one game in, let alone two tomorrow.

      • While that is true but as you stated above about the window between bracket play and the finals gets even smaller. Are they going to finish bracket play on Sunday and start the finals on Monday?

Personally I think the CWS finals should be evening prime time games Friday, Saturday and (if necessary) Sunday every year.

      • The tradeoff is that you play back to back games Thursday, Friday, and then Saturday. I would think you want to get tomorrow’s game in to stay on the every other day schedule as long as possible.

        • They’re may also be down one arm. No word on the availability of Luca Dalatri who lasted all of 15 pitches on Saturday before removing himself.

          So there is that.

    • That’s what i think also. Chamberlain might make it deep without help, saving arms for later. If not, we have backup.

    • agreed. Chamberlain has looked good his last 2-3 outings. If we can get 5-6 solid innings out of him with the lead, and get the bullpen to clean it up, that gives Luke another start on Friday. But, first things first…gotta win tomorrow and I think the Beavs are going to be looking to atone for their keystone cop performance on opening day. Go get some tomorrow boys.

  65. Cooper Criswell will get the start for UNC

“After using 10 pitchers in two games, the Tar Heels will turn to junior righty Cooper Criswell (6-2, 2.72 ERA). Criswell picked up the save in the first game of the CWS after giving up no runs and one hit in the final 2-1/3 innings.”

    Is this their closer?

    http://www.omaha.com/sports/cws/north-carolina-oregon-state-counting-on-experience-during-college-world/article_074d430e-8319-5052-894b-07332f252d86.html

    • Hiatt is their closer. Threw yesterday, didn’t record an out. He’s having a rough cws. It would seem unlikely that he’d make an appearance but with it being a loser out game, maybe.

  66. Potential for more delays at the CWS…………….

    http://www.omaha.com/sports/cws/sunshine-blue-skies-would-be-welcome-sight-for-ncaa-but/article_5daea81a-4ce0-550e-a06e-9e0c879a5798.html

I don’t know what else TD Ameritrade hosts besides Creighton baseball. Do they have a minor league club that plays there as well? I am not a fan of bracket play finishing on Sunday and the finals starting the next day. I do understand the logistics of it. They need butts in the seats and paying customers. Some people would have to leave if the finals were delayed. Not an easy solution short of putting a roof on TD Ameritrade. Not sure if I am a fan of that idea unless it were retractable.

    • It’s Creighton’s home stadium/field, but paid for by TD Ameritrade. Werner Park in SW Omaha is where the Storm Chasers (KC Royals’ minor league team) play. Separate smaller stadium. Creighton baseball gets about 50-100 fans in the stands each game at best. The stadium is waaay too big for them to be playing in it, but they do.

click this link and the underneath the main photo of the stadium on the right, shows the Creighton fans in the stands during a Creighton home baseball game. it’s really sad.

      https://stadiumjourney.com/stadiums/td-ameritrade-park-omaha-s2023

  67. Hope we can figure our how to get Malone and Nobach in the lineup for the whole game, they’ve got hot bats.

Nobach is 4 for 9 so far in Omaha, and Malone has batted 5 times in the last 2 games with a 1.000 OBP (single, bomb, three walks)

  68. Criswell didn’t allow us to get anything going on Saturday but now the first 8 guys in our order have faced him already. Only Madrigal got a hit against him with a grounder into right field.

Criswell only started 8 games this year and he averages 75 pitches per start. He threw 34 on Saturday so if we can get his pitch count up he won’t stay in long.

Against UNC relievers O’Brien, Daniels, and Hiatt, the Beavs batted 10 for 23 with 5 walks and 5 runs so we look pretty locked in against them.

We did not get a hit against reliever Lancelotti who throws gas but he is a little wild and out of 7 batters faced he walked 2 and hit Zak Taylor in the helmet.

Two other relievers pitched yesterday for UNC with 20 pitches each and we haven’t faced either of them but not sure they’d go today anyway.

The key is running up Criswell’s pitch count and chasing him early, then we’ll go bombs away on their pen.

    • Patient at bats and extending the pitch counts will be our most effective weapon against UNC on the offensive side. Whoever the starting pitcher is for the Beavs, needs to be able to throw strikes early, and get guys to swing and miss. If our pitchers go deep into the count like Heimlich did early, this will be another long game with a lot of pitching changes forthcoming. I don’t see UNC doing “Pitch by committee” as long as Criswell is effective on the mound.

      • Look for UNC to do the same — they are a bit more defensive on offense than OSU is, if that makes sense. They are looking to make pitchers getup in the pitch count, and take any freebies they can get. I expect this game to be similar to Saturday’s game — the team with the least amount of mistakes and freebies wins. 7-5 flip a coin.

      • We only had two baserunners against Criswell. In the 8th Grenier walked but then got picked off, then Madrigal got a single and was stranded. In the 9th we sent 3 batters to the plate and all 3 grounded out.

  69. it’ll be about 25 degrees cooler today than Saturday, with half the wind, so conditions should be back in our wheelhouse.

  70. optimistic that Kwan will play.

    quote from Kyle N:

“I think Kwan is doing well,” he said. “I don’t really know the full extent of what happened, but he’s a competitor and it’s going to take everything for him not to be in the lineup.”

  71. Looks like more rain delays until about 1 PM according to future cast on Weather Channel App. Rain all day and high of 73 low of 62. Humidity is at 89% right now with a moderate UV index of 4. it will be warm and muggy, but at least it won’t be a hot sun beating down.

  72. Criswell was very predictable. Running fastball to hit the inside corner to lefties, then backdoor the outside corner with the slurve. Early in the count I’m looking to jump on something inside, and late in the count I’m looking to drive the slurve to the opposite field. Do that, and you jump all over him. Not sure how/why they didn’t see that and adjust quickly.

    • Now that it is second time around for top of the line-up, Beavs will be ready. Beavs should get 3-4 runs through 5 innings.

    • They usually make the adjustment when the second time up. Didn’t get that chance last time. I think they were pressing at the time too

  73. Don’t think beavs will get their game in today. Rain is delaying first game. Not a whole lot of room to work with. If the first game is delayed by more than 3 hours, I think they postpone the late game.

    • depends when the late predicted rain shows up tonight. 1 PM the first game will start. Should end by 4 -5 PM which will allow a close to 6 PM start. If there is any delays that happen with the Arkansas vs TT game, then yes, the Beavs game will be pushed back until tomorrow morning. I think that’s why coach Casey is waiting 60-90 minutes prior to the start of their game to announce the starting pitcher. If game is tomorrow morning, I would expect Luke to start with Chamberlain/Gambrell as relief.

      • But if we can by without LH, he’s got a chance to pitch the first game against MS, then pitch again on short rest in Game 2 of the championship.

I dunno…I mean, we have to win this game, but we only get two more starts out of him, with the second one probably being a short start/long relief situation.

    • I wonder at what point do they just say F this, and move the remaining games to Minneapolis or some other MLB city that has some open dates and decent weather?

      • Never. The stadium was purposefully built for this event so the dates are all clear. They can go late if needed and not worry about a team or event messing with that. Late June in the Midwest is stormy and this year it is extreme. Tons of rain in Minneapolis this month.

  74. Texas Trch/Arkansas now scheduled for 12:30 CT first pitch. Barring any more delays, Beavs/UNC will start 65 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

So thinking if the game doesn’t delay and lasts 3 1/2 hrs, should be able to get the game to start around 7-7:30 CST 5:30 PST tonight. I wouldn’t be surprised if they postpone the Beavs/UNC game until tomorrow morning.

  75. Understand that this is off topic… but this could be good news. A new report says that Riley could be leaving to coach in the Alliance of American Football. The new start up spring league that Neuheisel and Spurrier will be coaching in. Thoughts??
