Have at it, guys.
Obviously the big story is the Beavs getting their first road win in years. Huge game for the program in that sense. Have to get that albatross off the neck. Then we can build from there.
So far, I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Blount and Smith. We just look more like a proper football team, even if the talent is lacking. Feeling optimistic (especially with the 3 big time recruits we’ve landed in the past few weeks), but a loss to Nevada will crush some of that, so this is a big game in that sense, too.
For those of you who have scouted Nevada, let us know what you think of that team.
My gut says this will be a close game, but I like Smith’s approach on offense — play calling/efficiency might be the difference.
Beavs 27-24
First? Really??
(I’m so excited)
Congratulations?
Thanks?
Eggers has the Beavs winning on a last second FG by Choukair. Hate to see the game depend on his leg, but it could be that close.
The Wolf Pack’s QB has thrown 3 ints in 2 games; I look for at least 1 more this week. If a pass rush materializes (Landry Payne returns?), the pass happy offense of Nevada could give up more than 1, even to the Beavs maligned secondary.
https://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/405797-300251-kerry-says-look-for-beavers-to-notch-two-wins-in-row
EDIT/ADD: Here’s Coach Burns, from Blitz
I think the real question can Nevada’s defense keep them from scoring? If not and especially if the run game keeps clicking like it has been it may be a high scoring game. Utimately the run game should keep the ball out of Nevada’s hands, and if they make some mistakes on offense (turnovers) it could get away from them.
Nevada runs a 3-3-5 base defense. Probably the same one that D coordinator Jeff Casteel used at Arizona under Rich Rod.
If it were up to me (and it’s not) I would not use Luton against Nevada.
Short of an injury (to Blount, in practice), there is only one way Luton starts and that is if JS and the staff buy the notion that he has not yet been given extended game time with the first string in a “non garbage time” situation.
If the evaluation in Fall camp was that Luton was clearly #1 then I might buy that thinking. But, it was always said that the two QB’s were very close. Now there’s game experience, at least for Blount.
I’m with you, I’d not use Luton.
Just read Eggers article and they’re apparently some type of air raid. This would probably be a good time to develop some kind of pass rush or maybe dial up some blitz packages to put some pressure on their QB so he has to hurry. If he has all day back there it’s probably not going to turn out well.
Didn’t Smith rule out Payne in that presser?
Thought we’re still waiting on the NCAA, could get an answer any day.
any month you mean
I haven’t scouted Nevada, but I can tell you they aren’t tOSU.
Well played.
Hope I’m wrong….
44-38 Beavs lose.
38-24 Beavs
Vegas has the Beavers as 3.5 point underdogs, with implied odds of winning at 38% (ESPN projects 40% win probability). Seems a little low considering Nevada looked bad against a mediocre Vandy team, but we’re on the road without Artavis. Thoughts?
I like Artavis but there’s no drop off to Jermar.
It should be a pick’em or maybe OSU as a 1 point dog. Nevada was an 8 point dog last week and lost by 31.
I think a lot of people, Vegas included, think this is the last year‘s Oregon State team. I don’t think we’re going to win the pac-12, but I don’t think we are as atrocious as everyone believes we are. Beavers by 17.
Agreed
Vegas wants lots of action. The spread isn’t always intended to get the exact point margin. Sometimes is just to try to entice people into betting.
Defense travels.
But big boy pants don’t fit in the overheads…
Your boat has an overhead?
Of course. Where else would one stow their oars when not rowing?
In the boathouse?
Beavs will need to score about 45 to win. Defense is that bad.
I think the outcome of the game is not really in doubt after the half, 41-27 Beavs.
Beavs 41-27, outcome not really in doubt after the 1st half.
We will need to be running the ball well. Time of possession and keeping our defense rested is key. Play Blount as it will give another running option in the game. To me this might be the most important game of this season. Turning point to build future upon.
Winning this game would give me some hope that the team could win 1-2 conference games.
That’s probably accurate. We should be favored against Arizona if we win Saturday, but we will be underdogs the rest of the schedule.
Wrong spot.
Vandy’s QB was 23/32 with over 250 yards passing and 2 TDs
Top 4 rushers for Vandy had yards per carry averages of 8.5, 5.4, 3.3, and 4.7
Nevada defense only had 1 sack
Nevada leading rusher only rushed 6 times (probably because they got behind in the second half)
To me, it seems like Nevada’s defense isn’t very good and the Beavs should be able to move the ball pretty easily. Nevada’s offense seems to be very pass heavy, which doesn’t bode well for the Beavs. As long as OSU can score TD’s and not get FG’s, this game could be a shootout.
Here’s hoping the D can find a way to force a turnover or two and come up with critical stops to make Nevada kick FGs.
OSU 41, Nevada 30
Good stats, thanks. I was listening to Dan and Nigel this morning and they were talking about the 3-3-5 defense Nevada runs. Obviously it didn’t go well for them against Vandy. Sounds like the issue is offensive lines are not use to this type of rush (d linemen are not filling the typical gaps) so I hope the Beavs can figure it out quickly.
I also worry about getting a pass rush to disrupt their qb if they throw the ball so much.
Hoping to see improvement of putting pressure on qb and find a way to get a couple of turnovers.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/1-2-3s-exotic-3-3-5-defense-202048804–spt.html
Judging by what I do know about it, as stated above I would not want Luton the turnover machine
back there and the D pressuring him into mistakes or getting free pot shots at him.
Utilize the RB for blocking when needed, two tight end sets and some quick hitters. Can the receivers win 1-on-1 battles in single coverage? Too bad Togiai is still out.
On defense I’m not sure what the Beavs can do. If there aren’t getting pressure on the QB he might have a field day. Offensively we will score some points. Win the turnover battle and use a ball control offense to keep their offense on the sidelines would be my game plan. But I don’t get paid to make those decisions.
Go Beavs
OSU 38-35, exceeding the total of 70 currently at the books. Pissed that I can’t tape it…will miss due to golfing
https://twitter.com/ConnorPelton28/status/1040260591296888833
Which still sucks for me because I have neither of those channels. Now if they broadcast on Disney channel or Cartoon Network I’m golden…..oh and Lifetime.
If you have cable, add the sports package with espnu for the weekend and then cancel it. I’ve had it for 24 hours and they don’t care at all
Do they prorate it?
I’ll be out and about Saturday, I can suffer through Parker for a few hours and be fine. What’s weird is I get pac12, big10, and a hand full of other sports channels but not ESPNews or espnu. Oh well. Go beavs.
QVC and Hallmark… they’re like cockroaches on any plan.
It’s going to be interesting when media access through cable and satellite becomes a minority. Only conferences who can pick up and broadcast their own product will be able to take advantage of any direct-to-market revenues. But you bring up a good point. Those conferences can also supplement online subs by selling pre-packaged events to some of these ubiquitous channels.
But keeping those rights and creating that kind of infrastructure necessarily decreases per school revenue distributions. And it would take some planning and vision.
I would imagine not many fans of any conference who did this would be very happy that they weren’t squeezing every penny of profit out of the here and now so they could build some pretty arena or stadium or whatever as soon as possible.
Subscribe to Hulu or Sling TV for a free week. Both carry ESPNU.
Nice call by Reverend earlier in the week predicting the game would be moved to ESPNU.
Almost Trumpian in your projection!
ESPNU works for me-sweet!
Fortunately, there are a ton of bootleg livestream sites online that will show you ESPNU, if you don’t have a legitimate way to receive that channel with your cable package. Just be careful not to click into any of the popup ads that may show up. Just let them sit for 5 seconds and then close out of them and any popup window which may show up, and eventually the game will start showing up. For example, I found this one with a simple google search and it streams ESPNU throughout the day.
Also, you can often find live sports streaming on youtube actually. Just go to youtube and search for ESPNU and filter for the most recent entries. You’d be surprised how many games you can watch for free this way, and youtube doesn’t have the annoying popups.
Just get an HDMI and connect your PC/Laptop to your TV and you’ve got everything you need(except not usually in 1080p)
Another option, go to reddit and search for “ESPNU Livestream” or “college football livestream” and there will be threads on gameday with tons of options for most games, especially the ones broadcast on the bigger networks, like ESPN
Ukranian friends abound.
Still confused why Luton is still in the mix to start? Anyone have this kid’s overall stats as a Beav? Can’t be pretty… He must be a real nice guy cause he’s a shitty football player on gamedays
I remember seeing a few articles in preseason that mentioned him as one of the leaders of the offense. Those kinds of guys usually get more chances at a job based on personality alone. It’s harder to be a vocal leader when you’re not actually playing. Then again, it’s also hard to be a vocal leader when you’re the one dragging your team down by playing poorly…
Simplest answer……..he fits the Riley model.
Fortunately, that influence is fading!
Exactly. Riley’s history of slower, taller QBs with cannon arms has lingered. Fortunately Smith WANTS to win rather than just coast by, so maybe we keep seeing Blount.
Plus he chucks up INT’s….Riley perfection.
Y
I hate that Luton is still even talked about. He’s lanky, slow, and his accuracy is shit, especially his deep ball.
I’m callin’ him the abortion because he kills the offense before it even starts.
I’m going to hold on to faith that Smith sticks with the hot hand, but if he plays Luton he proves he’s just as incompetent as the zombie mentor Riley.
Luton only got in the game once it was out of hand. Smith is clearly favoring Blount as the starter.
I suspect Luton gets reps because of the injury possibility. Beavs haven’t had a QB start the entire season for a while due to injury. There’s also the possibility the team took exception to Blount refusing to burn his redshirt last year and have made it clear to smith that they don’t respect Blount.
That’s an interesting possibility; I didn’t like Blount refusing to burn his RS either. However, I haven’t seen any indication in player interviews or in the press to convince me that the team isn’t at least equally supportive of either QB.
The possibility of an injury certainly is reason to have a #2 ready. Maybe the Markus Greaves theory is valid?
Hating on Blount for using a RS year is just dumb as all get out. He had reasons. He discussed it with the coaches. It was promised to him.
Any player who feels like it’s about them is only correct insofar as their respect for these decisions extends to them when they need to make them. And it’s not like he was on a ship last year. He was paying to go to school.
People have lives, and they get to discuss them and plan them and execute them to the best of their abilities. It’s not about you.
I’d give every player a redshirt for last year due to coaching incompetence. Can hardly blame him.

LIGHTS OUT, at least on ONE side of the ax handle
I know it was already said but damn that axe looks dangerous. Could they not have opted for a rubber mallet instead or even safer, a balloon bouquet. We can’t afford any unnecessary injuries.
Jack Del Rio is saying, Amateurs! Learn from others mistakes…I’m surprised they don’t have rubber on the ends of the axe!
We need a oversized Acme mallet like Wiley Coyote.
Just grind the edges flat to one-eighth inch wide, and round off the corners.
that axe is waaay too close to his neck! and it looks sharp!
The real question is: are they going to bury that thing in midfield when they finally win a road game?
I would doubt it is sharp.
It doesn’t look dull
They should go full Gwar mode and make a giant barbarian style axe out of foam rubber.
http://www.socold.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Balsac-the-Jaws-of-Death-200×300.jpg
And have them run through a skull with a 30′ high shower of blood spraying out.
And all opponents must wear their white road unis. How do we pitch this to the ideation team?
I think blood spraying would be a safety issue. The players wearing antlers might snag the goalpost if they can’t see where they’re going.
Maybe have it pour out of the eyes and off the upper jaw in a waterfall effect instead?
You could even position the teeth to make it run off in a blood-rain curtain.
Probably should avoid using the cuttlefish of cthulhu prop. Wouldn’t fit with the family atmosphere
If they can play in rain, they can play in blood.
Here, we’ll compromise.
30′ high spray of blood showering out of a *beaver* skull.
Classic angrybeavs intellectual persuit of excellence. Pullitzer prize material here.
With what the pestilence that is humankind has done to air quality, I just worry that aerosolizing blood would make it less than palatable. And then we would have to have the whole discussion about whether or not blood travelling at that speed would be considered fast food.
Pulitzer or not, I’m just happy that there are three people on a blog that know who Gwar is.
4, actually. XD
RIP Oderus
A god could get tired of all the slaying.
Per Amy Schwartz
And there is this video where he mentions that he’s not 6’4″ and compares himself to Baker Mayfield:
https://twitter.com/i/status/1039645697748791297
hmmmm, 6’4″
Did he wait for Dukart to walk off the field so he could be last?
Anyone catch JS on radio with Brandon (I’m always ready for a drink) Sprague?
Per Sprague’s twitter, he reads between the lines and concludes Bradford will play this week.
Sprague also writes: “Smith said both guys will see action this weekend. I think Blount starts and even if Luton plays (he will) but if Blount does what he’s been doing, IMO, he should be the starter.”
Gress at the GT has it a little different: Smith did say there is a potential that both Conor Blount and Jake Luton would see action.
“I think we need to,” Smith said. “… We’re going to start a guy, get behind him and let him go. But I do feel confident if we need a spark from another, put him in.”

No mention of the “Stroke Hard” message on the reverse side…
That sounds painful
At least it’s somewhat original, manly type of shit.
Saw a blurb about fortune cookie’s fucking *backpack*.
A.
Fucking.
Backpack.
That’s some weak ass shit right there.
An axe? Fuck yeah, I can get behind running out with an axe, especially a double bit. Probably not the first or only team with one but I can still get behind it.
Go find a picture of the backpack. It’s some gucci/Prada looking thing. Very metrosexual, I’m sure it’s full of lip balm and tampons.
Tampons wouldn’t do them any good, and lip balm should be stowed somewhere cool… like a car in the sun.
You stuff tampons up your nose to stop nose bleeds. Duh.
Not to draw attention to certain body parts, but aperture sizes make me think, “ouch.”
What about women’s clothing, suspenders and a bra?

WTF with the axe? Beats a chainsaw I guess. Run out carrying Sara Jean Underwood.
There is only one Axe in CFB and one of these decades it will be in the trophy case in Minneapolis.

It’s basically the Miami turnover chain, on a budget, and without the turnovers.
https://fanbuzz.com/college-football/miami-turnover-chain-cost/
It could be worse. Boise State now has a sideline turnover throne. Yeah….
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2018/9/1/17810234/boise-state-turnover-throne
It’s only a matter of time before a team elects to start using the “turnover blowjob”, at least until they notice a player’s productivity goes way down after their first forced turnover.
OT but it looks like there’s an option in Casey’s new contract to return as HC by June 1, 2019
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2018/09/provision_in_pat_caseys_revise.html
The door is open for Casey to return? Didn’t someone here tell us that last week? 2 for 2 for the right Reverend it appears.
Amen!
Are you also going to be telling us the sun’s going to rise every day for at least the next week?
It worked for that Sidd Finch guy awhile back.
PHIL STEELE REPORT (#107 Oregon State @ #73 Nevada, 9/15/2018)
These two teams are close experience wise but Nevada is in the 2nd year of Jay Norvell and has a much stronger (and larger) defense than a year ago. Oregon State has a young thin team. Norvell is 4-1 ATS at home vs FBS teams. OSU RB Jermar Jefferson rushed for 238 yds and 4 td’s, the 3rd highest rush total in school history and teams with Artavis Pierce for a solid 1-2 punch at RB. OSU scored on 7 of 8 1H possessions with Blount at QB and led 38-0 and coasted vs Southern Utah. The beavers have lost their last 20 road games SU (5-14-1 ATS in that span). Last week Nevada trailed Vanderbilt 17-10 at the half including a 7 yd TD drive after a Nevada fumble. Nevada opened the 2H with punt, int, stop on downs, fumbled PR, stop on downs, and an INT and lost by 31. Nevada is the stronger team and is at home but this will be a competitive game.

After the last two weeks of play, anyone who has the Beavs ranking in triple digits needs to update their formula.
.
Beavs offense to put down virtually identical yardage as @tOSU?
Yeah that’s pretty funny. They put up 400 yards and 31 points vs Ohio State but oh no here comes juggernaut Nevada. Glancing at their #s vs Vandy it looks like they went RB by committee and all of their backs had decent success vs Nevada. Initial guess is that Jefferson is gonna break off the handle in these guys.
Steele wrote this when?
Unlike the kid from Nevada who says Jefferson is questionable for the game, Steele implies that AP is part of the group playing in Nevada when he says, “Jermar Jefferson … teams with Artavis Pierce for a solid 1-2 punch at RB.
an espn writer still has the Beavs in his “Bottom 10”

If you are dyslexic we are in the top ten!

You’d think Burt Reynolds only had three bad movies in the whole of his career.

Bill Connelly, who does really thorough preseason analysis pieces, predicts the OSU – Nevada game — 32.8 for Nevada and 32.79 for the Beavs.
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2018/9/13/17854190/college-football-picks-week-3-2018-predictions-odds-spreads
Seems like a coin flip game. We can’t turn it over and must play a clean game to win.
We know own the losing streak that seemed to have a permanent residence in Lawrence, KS.
We were in a similar situation in 1990 with some kind of losing streak. Only I think it was KState, and Northwestern was involved.
Southern Utah plays at Arizona at 8:00 Saturday night. We’ll know where we stand vs Arizona for next week. The S&P+ predictions have Arizona beating SUU by 10.
Jermar Jefferson is questionable for Sat? When did this happen?
As reported by an “aspiring sportswriter” who apparently attends Nevada. First I’d heard of it.
Perfect. Let them think that.
It’s questionable how many yards he’s going to run for. 100? 200? We’ll see.
It really doesn’t matter if he plays or not. The running backs on this team are not good. It will really show against the power 5 schools (who aren’t up 6 touchdowns and stop trying to play defense like tOSU)
Fuck off duck boy
No shit, we have 2 RBS who have more yards then all the RBS that the ducks have. That and significantly better opponents.
I suppose we could line up against three teams who would be lucky to win a single game this year… on any level.
That would really set us up for success in the conference slate.
Fake news
Only about an hour to bump Jefferson over the massive number of 15 in order to win a meaningless poll:
https://herosports.com/fbs-football/vote-offensive-hero-of-the-week-2018-09-09-rsrs?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Link&utm_campaign=FBS
Good find, Jack. Posted it to the twitter feed and Jermar wins it with 65 votes. 2nd place remained at 15.
Meaningless, but I’m sure Jefferson will appreciate the fans having his back and getting him this little feather in his cap.
I always hated these “trap” games when a so-so team from a weaker conference came to Corvallis.
An apathetic, small crowd coupled with over confident players and we got smacked. Nevada better be careful or it will happen to them.
That makes no sense.
You think the Pac is a weaker conference than the MWC?
Troy up 17-0 at #TPB late in the 2nd quarter. I thought they fired Riley..?
He leaves a strong scent of mediocrity everywhere he goes. It’s really hard to remove.
“Mediocre” would be a step up for #TPB right now
FSU’s fortune cookie offense lighting the world on fire, down 6-0 to Syracuse in the 3rd.
Make that 20-0.
Yikes.

Troy wins at #TPB 24-19. First 0-2 start for Nebby since 1957. Could Frost be worse there than Riley?
Are they blaming riley’s recruits yet? Not that it isn’t justified, but we did the same thing and look were that got us for 3 years.
I see a ton of fans getting on Gebbia’s ass online. “Enjoy sucking at Oregon State, you could be starting for Nebraska right now!”
Meanwhile Oregon State has a good chance to go to 2-1 today while BigRed is winless.
From the same assholes that said good riddance…..what a classy bunch.
Gebbia’s going to enjoy Pierce and Jefferson as teammates…
I could see Pierce going into the draft, especially if he maintains his productivity after returning from the elbow injury. Hopefully seeing Nall go undrafted gives him something to consider, since he likely has another year before completing his degree
Golly!
Who wouldn’t want to play for those fans?
Maybe Pelini was right about them.
This is why you don’t shit-can coaches that win 9-10 games a year, every year. No matter how caustic they are.
Just saw that Nebraska goes to Michigan and Wisconsin next…
And Kelly and UCLA are off to a 0-2 start (Cincinnati, Oklahoma), hosting Fresno tonight:
