      • I’m watching a little SJSU @ oregon. Honestly, this oregon offense does not look impressive. Oregon State looks more coordinated on offense. They don’t seem to know what they want to do, but occasionally pop a big play because they’re playing quite possibly the worst G5 team in the country. They do have some athletes on defense who should keep them in games.

14-3 Oregon in the 2nd(the 3 could easily be 7 for SJSU, but Pac12 refs wont call the blatant redzone PI call in the redzone)

  1. Here I was thinking all day this game would be at 5:00pst, but it’s actually at 4:00pst. Hopefully the rest of you paid more attention than I did. Almost game time!

  2. In fairness, Blount was mostly throwing to open guys. Whiffed on the fade route in the end zone. But agree he definitely looks much better than what we’ve seen in a while.

  3. This is looking like it will be a shootout. Need our defense to wake up here on the second drive and also our Oline to get some blocks to open up our run game.

    • When you give up 77 points, can’t stop Nevada or Southern Utah (at times) it doesn’t bode well for conference play. These guys are trend setters

  4. Is Tibesar in over his head or do we just have really shitty players on that side of the ball? So far this defense isn’t any improvement over last years shit show.

    • Main issue is zero D1-caliber Dlinemen on the roster. And poor depth on top of that.

I think it’s mostly lack of talent. Talent wasn’t great last year, and injuries and transfers were brutal.

    • Not to go full excuse mode, but our already bad DLine lost it’s best DLineman, plus has a severely overweight Elu Aydun.

Add the losses of Morris, Irvine, Ah-Hoy, Dunn, Katoa and transfer of Xavier Crawford, and I don’t think we could expect an improvement. Of course the bar was pretty low though….so it’s still disappointing so far.

      • Losing Crawford was huge. Outside of Nall/Pierce I think he was the most talented player on the roster last year.

We also lost Ugwoebo, Nall, and Tyner (inadvisable early NFL declaration = loss). Luckily we seem to have reloaded at RB in a big way, but our LB core could certainly use U.

  5. What did I write the other day? Ball control offense, keep their offense (and our horrible defense) off the field. Not that hard to figure out this is the only way they are going to stay in games.

  6. The D is awful because they lack talent/players.
Those transfers will help, but we need even more work there. Offense is okay but also needs work.

  7. The first 2 games we looked like a well coach, well prepared team that was just lacking talent on D. So far today is a major step backwards.

    • This is the first full game I’ve had a chance to watch due to family being in town, etc.
From bits I saw of the other games, agree, we looked like a better coached team than last year. This is a huge disappointment. Need to get that elusive road win as a step toward changing the program, and instead of that we’re getting blownout by a Mountain West team. Guess we should have all seen this coming given we have no depth, a walk-on playing QB, and no game changers on D.

    • Yeah, great job by Smith egging these bozos on. People said it didn’t matter. Clearly they’re fired up and killing us, intent on showing us they are Ohio State.

  8. When I learned Gebbia was transferring I was happier and more excited for next year than I have been for any moment about this year.

This year is going to be one to throw down the memory hole. A complete waste.

  9. Luton takes the snap, immediately falls to the ground.
Announcer “It looked like a play action”…

In what universe does that look like play action?

  10. I want to know how the announcer knows that Luton “meant” to underthrow that ball.. Maybe it was just wildly inaccurate but it worked out?!

  11. Is it unreasonable to think kicking tee technology should have advanced to the point where a little wind won’t knock the ball down?
How many years have the tee makers had to work on this?

  12. Luton is playing better than Blount … IDK what you guys are talking about.

He has huge flaws and I assume Gebbia will easily be better, but not worse than Blount. That’s just the narrative here.

  13. The first 20 minutes were looking pretty bad, but the last 10 we’ve clearly been the better team. If that keeps up, we’ll win this game.

…In spite of Luton and his “Arm” lol

  14. We are IN THIS!

We have been far superior in the last 10 minutes. If we play anywhere near this level in the 2nd half we’re gonna win!!!

Props to the offensive line for giving Luton some time, and thank god Luton only overthrew like 1 receiver on that drive.

  15. As bad as it has looked at times, Beavs are in position to make this a game in the 2nd half(thanks Luton? Or thanks Nevada?).
Too bad we had to give up a TD on the offensive fumble earlier.

  16. I think the first drive of the second half is going to be key. OL has been disappointing so far, I would like to see them blow some holes open for Jefferson, he’s did a lot on his own in the first half. I don’t know if Luton is better, but he knows how to step up in the pocket. Nevada’s -3-3-5 had Blount freaking out.

  17. Luton hasn’t looked great, but Blount is the reason we’re in this hole. His two turnovers directly led to TDs. His mobility is nice but he gets squirrely under pressure.

Blount’s first drive was nice, but again he was throwing to wide-open receivers. The only throw which wasn’t easy was badly overthrown (fade route to Hodgins). Since that first drive he’s pretty much been a liability.

  18. Our WRs are good, and Luton has the ability to get it to them further downfield than Blount when he’s hot, but he’s a turnover machine if you give him enough of a sample size.

  19. Luton is delivering those timing, midrange passes pretty well.

Unfortunately, those deep passes where his arm strength would matter are all off.

  20. What was I saying about Luton and sample size?

Yeah, give him enough and he’ll show what he is. He’s fine as a jump start. Smith should have went back to Blount once he got the good sample from Luton that got them back in the game.

  21. Win or lose yes this team lacks talent at QB and D but they fight hard and the coaching staff seems to be very good at in game adjustments. After watching 3 games I think we have the right guy running the program. I thought the same thing after we won the civil war 2 seasons ago so who knows.

  22. Knew it.
You don’t play to not lose like that and let one of your worst players (the kicker) decide the outcome unless you absolutely have to.

  23. Choker needs to be replaced. I don’t care if it’s with a walk on, a player from the soccer team, whatever. Dude has got to fucking go.

  24. I wouldn’t trot that useless fuck back on to the field once the rest of the season.

Go for two after any touchdown and never kick another field goal.

Fucking useless choking piece of garbage.

        • We had a game several years back where our kicker missed like 2 FGs and 2 extra points, and I was more angry at him than I’ve ever been at any player.

That game was against LSU. And that kicker became the greatest kicker in the history of OSU.

  25. Loss not on Choukair. Smith should know what he has (and doesn’t have) in him by now. Can’t play for the FG there. Season trajectory changing loss. Ugh.

  26. Wondering when we can start the new coaching search. I haven’t been a Smith fan from the start. I believe that you can’t teach judgement. Bringing Riley in was a major misstep. Now he pissed away the game. It’s premature to think about letting him go but the writing is on the all to me, not going to work.

  27. Did you all seriously think we were going to win?

Same old Beavers. Get your hopes up then it all comes crashing down.

That’s what a program with a losing mentality looks like. Losing a heartbreaker to a fucking Nevada team that will win 5 games at best.

          • It is a BS argument. Whether it was or wasn’t running into the kicker had ZERO bearing on that miss or the previous.

And if you think he was going to make it from 5 yards closer after shanking those previous two? You’re an even bigger idiot than previously thought.

          • It has no bearing on rather he should be kicker or not but it absolutely has a fucking bearing on rather they win or not and that’s what I’m talking about

          • ANOTHER amazing post! I never stated he shouldn’t be the kicker. Not once. Keep trying though. It’s really cute. Jack’s 100% correct in his post below. If you’re relying on the refs to win, you’re going to lose.

The refs screwed us is your opinion. That’s a loser mentality. You must be a beaver fan. YOU are part of the reason this football program sucks.

          • I’m not relying on refs, I admitted he should have made the kick

It’s possible for BOTH THINGS TO BE TRUE

its possible to believe he should have made the kick and to expect competent officials to make an obvious call, BOTH CAN BE TRUE

  28. Everyone remembers Serna at LSU, but this??
How this program has fallen, at least LSU was, what #3 in the nation, and now we’re disappointed by a gut punch loss to Nevada?
Choker’s not some Serna, 3 for 7 on the season.

  29. That was just a weird series of events on O.

I have no clue what they were doing. Give the ball to your playmakers. Score a TD. Sock it away.

Instead we lose yardage while moving the ball from the left hash to the middle?

    With how many time-outs left?

    Just poor management.

  30. I thought maybe just this once we would win a goddamn game! Nevada would lose to every other team in the Pac-12 except for us. We are going to get blasted this year by everybody! Every goddamn year it’s wait until next year, just once I want it to be the year that we’re doing all this waiting for!

We always think we’re getting better but everybody else is too and keeps us stuck at the Bottom Rung of the god damn Pac-12 ladder like we’ve been for a damn decade!

      • Why?

The D looks like they finally woke up. I think the more Elu gets in shape, the better we are.

Plus, Reichner and Morris will be major pluses in the near future.

        • Good points about the D, add to that the Offensive play calling.
Gotta wonder if the ground game will be more like the first two games than today’s “play from behind” show.

          • I’m really skeptical about the O play calling.

We should have run the ball much more than we did. The rotations were willy-nilly at best. Every time I watched Jefferson run off the field, I thought he was primed for a game-breaker.

Well… not every time. It happened enough that a pattern developed.

There were a couple times on 3rd and 5 that a draw (or even the threat of one) would have opened up the field.

            But no….

    • Arizona is most definitely not getting better. That’s a decent chance for a win. The flying Herberts from methville have looked vanilla all year so there’s a chance there too.

Every other team is a curb stomping in the making.

  31. Really strange coaching decision/management. You’ve got all the leverage, can control the clock with two timeouts to their none, and you throw all that away and take it backwards and let it all ride on your kicker that just shanked one?

    • ^this

Who had already missed one and was only successful on 50% before that kick.

They converted two 4th downs on that drive. Just to let it ride on one play. And kick us in the balls. It’s what losers do.

  32. “Choukair said his biggest improvement from last season to this is with the mental aspect of the game.

‘Mentally I think I’m way stronger than I was last year and I think that’s the biggest thing, especially as a kicker,’ he said.”

  33. To me it was sort of a NFL type decision by JS but WITHOUT a NFL kicker. 3-7, miss a possible streak ending kick, you need to ride the pines. Next kicker up.

  34. I’ve never been more convinced that this blog is really about hating Oregon State than I am tonight

It’s possible to believe that the kicker sucks and the refs missed an obvious call and only this blog would decide the refs are fine and all the blame goes to Smith and the kicker.

This blog isn’t about critical dissent; it’s about hating everything OSU does.

    • Well you did leave once. And didn’t stay gone. Too bad.

I’m sure your butt buddies over at Benny’s house can hold you and justify losing to Nevada.

    • Quit whining about the refs and sleep it off dude. They missed the call. They probably missed a bunch of calls. What do you want us to do, write our congressmen? Which was the real issue: one missed call at the end (which still doesn’t mean we win were it made) or the fifty times we shot ourselves in the foot with dropped passes, missed interceptions, and crappy first half defense?

      • It’s what losers do. Victim mentality. They focus on the one thing instead of the bazillion other things that led up to the one thing.

      • I want you to be mad when officials miss a game winning call like a normal fan base

And as for benny’shouse. I got banned there for being too pessimistic

        I’m literally the middle

          • You’re the o e that wants OSU to lose due to obvious incompetence by the officials, not me. I’m always good. Maybe you need to look in the mirror and realize the reality that you really hate OSU and want them to lose.

        • I don’t blame the refs for the first half when my dead grandma in a wheelchair could’ve ran for 200 yards against the defense. I don’t blame the refs for the piss poor throw that was intercepted in the red zone in the 4th quarter. I don’t blame the refs for Smith not utilizing his final two timeouts and trying to position the Beavs closer for an easier FG for a kicker that obviously has issues between the ears.

If that’s a difficult concept for you to understand, then keep up the loser mentality. This game against a weak sauce Nevada team was easily winnable and should NEVER have come down to relying on one unreliable guy at the end to make or miss.

But you blame the refs for one bad call? and are convinced he’d make it from 5 yards closer? You are a beaver fan. And your left of middle is still a loser mentality.

I am pissed off. I am pissed off that an Oregon St football program gave up 77 points to Ohio St. I am pissed off that an Oregon St football program lost to a team they never should have lost. I am pissed off that OSU fans still support a loser like Mike Riley and welcome him back with open arms. I am pissed off that Oregon St does not take winning in football seriously. I am pissed off that there’s an aging fanbase that accepts it.

Stop being a loser and speak up. You want to see what winners look like that don’t accept losing or mediocrity? See Pat Casey and Scott Rueck.

Oregon St football could be so much more than it is. But we have an administration with a hope and pray attitude and a fan base that accept losing.

People that are perpetually beat down (in anything) either give up and accept it, find a way out of it or develop a victim mentality.

          • I am not convinced he would have made the kick, I am convinced it should have been called. Accepting the no call indicates to me that you actually prefer being a critic and want the Beavs to fail. Congrats to you for that.

          • I don’t blame the refs for Blount fumbling for another opposition score or throwing an INT in an equally bad area which gave them another TD.

I don’t blame them at all.

      • I agree 100% that the refs should have thrown the flag. He should have had another shot at it.

None of that changes the fact that he never should have been kicking that FG in the first place, and Jonathan Smith is a 2 ball bitch.

    • It’s an hour after a tough loss. I don’t like everything on here either but at least this site allows free speech without banning people for not following group think.

    • If you’ve ever played or coached a sport, the one thing you know is that you can’t change a ref’s mind.

I think the PI on an uncatchable pass was more egregious.

But what am I going to do about it?

      Whine louder?

  35. They really were the better team out there tonight. And that is a lot different than would have been the case last year. Hindsight is always 20/20. I agree probably should have tried running it a few more times. But if we would have fumbled it or thrown a pick, everyone would have been calling for smiths head for not just kicking. And people keep claiming this kick was “not playing to win”. If he makes it you win. Sure sounds like playing to win to me.

    • AGREE, running down the clock and going for a FG was playing to win.
DISAGREE, not everyone would have called for Smith’s head if he used his TO’s and downs before kicking; many already (justifiably) had absolutely no confidence in Choker.

      • I think JS has to have the mindset that Choukair is not reliable, I don’t think he had that in this game. Maybe next week against Arizona? I mean in this day and age going 3-7 through the first three games is youth football numbers!

    • Exactly. This is something between a 1 win and a 4 win team. This loss didn’t cost us a bowl berth. We have a half finished stadium with an administration and fan base that are halfway invested in the program. Unfortunately, I don’t Canzano’s number or I’d be sending him drunk texts complaining about the situation at OSU just like Gary did.

  36. “But if we would have fumbled it or thrown a pick, everyone would have been calling for smiths head for not just kicking.”

Disagree. Multiple people were saying you CAN’T leave it to the kicker.

    Tough loss.

  37. I’m not down. Team should have won a road game against Nevada and nearly did. It’s about where we expect them to be right now. Pierce and Bradford being out makes the offense much different, considering they were our 2 main weapons up to this point.
Would have liked to see 1 or 2 endzone shots in the last 30 seconds to Hodgins, who didn’t seem capable of dropping a catch, so that was a blown oppotunity, but I dont think the team gets worse as a result of this loss and they will bounce back next week.

    • Not to mention that in a 2 minute scenario Luton would have been the preferred option over Blount. Pierce, Bradford and a healthy Luton would have made a difference in the game management that last 3 minutes.

  38. And for the “They miss calls all game” crowd.

    You’re right

    The difference

Missing a holding call in the 2nd quarter is legitimately missing a call, missing an obvious penalty on the last play is deciding not to call it.

That is different. It just is.
