My first thought with Able’s Tommy John surgery was it could have been due to how he was used in the CWS.
Able addressed this professionally:
Some members of the national media criticized then-Oregon State head coach Pat Casey for Abel’s CWS pitch count. Abel has repeatedly defended Casey and pitching coach Nate Yeskie when asked about his workload.
“People are going to go after (Casey) and Yeskie and (interim head coach Pat Bailey) and everyone,” Abel said. “There’s no warrantees, there’s no guarantees in this game. It’s just baseball, it happens.”
Abel took the entire summer off and didn’t begin throwing again until October.
“I felt better than ever coming into this season,” he said. “I never got overused, I never did anything that I didn’t feel like I wanted to and my coaches never put me in a situation that would jeopardize my career, my life, anything like that.”
What do you guys think? I do feel our coaches have overworked pitches in the past, but I’m not sure how we compare with other programs in that regard since I don’t watch other programs.
Also, this CWS could be interesting. Two of my best buddies are GaTech and UGA alum and both are now top 20 teams. I know it’s too early to predict, but as it gets closer let me know how you see the brackets shaking out.
Finally, I read a report today that Gebbia is finally getting more first team reps. It seems crazy it took this long, and it also implies these coaches think Luton is the guy. That’s a bit scary to me. Luton did improve last year, but Gebbia could be an NFL QB. I think you have to go with the higher upside and coach him up if he’s behind with the playbook, etc.
Feel free to go general.
First!
Hot topic…We will never know how the CWS usage really affected this injury. It certainly didn’t help but it is what it is. I hope he can come back for his sake and have a great pro career.
My hope with the Luton/Gebbia situation is that they gave Luton the early nod so they don’t lose the team with the seniority/leader deal. Make the young kid really earn it and gain everyones respect the right way.
There is always a change the things really clicked for Luton (being that this is like his 7th year of college football) and he’ll be a 6’7″ great qb this year. If that’s the case and Gebbia knows it’ll be his team next year then it’s ok. Ideally Gebbia outplays and earns the spot this year. I feel like I trust Smith more than I trusted Riley to play the best player.
How long before Luton is injured? Provided he wins the job, of course.
Luton is the popular guy now?
If you want to eliminate TJ surgeries then just outlaw curveballs, cutters and sliders. Fastballs, change and knuckleballs only.
I just hope we can label this a Quarterback Competition and not a Quarterback Controversy. I’m tired of the latter.
I’d guess that Luton getting more early snaps had more to do with the play book than anything else. The entire offense is trying to knock off the cobwebs and get up to game speed. Let the guy who knows all the plays do that. Then let the noob start stepping in and really get in rhythm.
This is a very good point.
Anybody have any good examples of college football teams that play in a stadium that is either partially or fully covered?(as in having a roof)
I wonder if that is something OSU could research as a way to upgrade Reser whole attempting to make it more of a mixed use facility, while also making playing in and viewing football games more attractive to recruits and fans?
Even a partially closing/retractable roof could add to the potential uses for Reser. Just spitballing since theres not much going on sports wise
That would cost a fortune, and it seems like something more plausible if you have a good football team.
It’s hard to imagine a bad team in a small town getting a retractable roof.
Idaho and North Dakota St play indoors. Small arenas.
I sat under the Teflon sky of the Metrodome for years. Indoor football sucks. It is meant to be outdoors. Battling the elements is half the fun.
Dunno about North Dakota indoor field but the Idaho one is, for lack of a better word, crap.
or worse word?
While I think it is something to explore I don’t see anyway the cost would not be prohibitive.
Syracuse is the only example of a dome built specifically for an FBS school I can think of.
That’s why I’m going with the mixed use route. Attract more outdoor/indoor concerts to Corvallis, maybe some monster truck rallys? Graduations could always be held outdoors with no concerns of rain forcing it into Gill. I was thinking something along the lines of an open air design that has a cover. Sort of like a much larger scale version of the covering near the campus student center.
Yes, probably way too expensive for Oregon State, but Barnes has talked about ways to make that stadium more useful year round, without having to basically let it sit empty for all but 6-10 days every year.
https://www.andersen-const.com/portfoliov2-files/oregon-state-university-student-experience-center/osu-sec-03.jpg
Because now I am curious, when have they moved graduations into Gill? When I graduated it was a rain or shine even at Reser.
On the mixed use idea, that sounds good in theory but I don’t see many events too big for Gill clamoring to come to Corvallis with Salem, Eugene, and Portland all with bigger populations centers within day trip distance.
Bend gets those events while being similar to Corvallis in size but Bend is also geographically isolated.
I like the idea just don’t see how it would be practical.
My graduation was in Gill. It was a sweat lodge. Nobody liked it. But maybe it was due to phase 1 of Reser going on, now that I think about it
The rain plan for commencement (and they put one in place beginning 2011…) does not include moving the ceremony to Gill. If it rains, you get wet. If it rains too much, with wind and added adverse weather, they will cancel the bulk of the ceremony – mostly to keep the platform party from having to parade in the rain – and you go to Truax to pick up your sheepskin, then you get spend the day with your parents enjoying the best college town in the Pac 12.
In retrospect, maybe a smaller stadium, covered seating for all, would have been a more forward-looking model (heh heh). Consider smaller, professional soccer stadiums as an example; close to the field, smaller than college/pro football stadiums, but covered seating for most, multi-use:
http://www.bbvacompassstadium.com/stadium-information
Houston’s is only 22K, likely a little TOO small for OSU football, but something like that might have allowed OSU to address what is likely going to be a declining trend in football viewing, potentially increased support for soccer(?), and multi-use purposes.
Its hard to imagine Corvallis becoming a PAC 12 or other soccer mecca with a stadium like this, but its one of the few multi-use potential I can think of other than concerts.
Agree. The future West side Reser renovation could be that opportunity to decrease capacity while making the facility more multi-purpose. No matter what they do, the whole stadium will look piecemeal and have little continuity. At least they could make it more user friendly.
My thought is, what if they consider having an opponent locker room under the West side renovation to allow an opportunity for multi-purpose use of having other sports use the facility. I know it’s an advantage if you will to force opponents to use Gill, but you can make the opponent locker room extremely basic. white or black and orange walls with simple metal lockers that are small. This would reduce capacity, but also allow for more premium seating to be used on the West side with maybe having a larger covered terrace on that side to allow more fans to enjoy a more open feel instead of being forced in a seat.
Hey, Nice, you asked in the previous thread about Mountainside HS. There is no roof.
Folks coming from the south should consider going through Sherwood to get to the school, check your nav aid.
Aerial pic of the school is here:

Thanks oob. I’ll probably skip. Looks like a pretty wet day in Dam City
I thought trotting Abel back out in the 9th was kinda dumb. He looked absolutely gassed at that point, honestly I thought he probably should have been done after the 7th but with it being a championship game I get throwing him in the 8th. I can’t recall who was even available to pitch though, I remember being glad at the time Heimlich didn’t pitch the 9th cause that would have been a big distraction. I suppose one could question the coaching decisions, that is after all what fans do with their free time. I kind of question the tournament format. Considering the roster sizes if you end up going through the losers bracket someone is going to have to pitch more than what is recommended for 18-20 year olds.
The cost of a title, one elbow. Both ways.
If drew were fully recovered, might have won that year.
Leaving Abel in won the title.
Who knows if the Beaver would have won if they went with someone else in the 8th/9th though.
I’m not in the business of dealing with counterfactuals, but it’s almost certain we would have won even if we pulled Abel and put in Heimlich as the closer in the 6th/7th inning. Beavs had a 4-0 lead in the 6th and 7th innings. From what I remember our coaching staff wanted to pull him, but Abel and Rutschman fought for keeping him in. Hard to fault players for wanting to compete, especially in the title game.
The way the CWS is designed forces coaches to overwork pitchers. That is just the nature of the tournament structure. Overwork pitchers or lose and the goal is to win.
In this particular case the CWS could be related but considering he didn’t pitch all summer I have my doubts.
Totally agree. The format is borderline abusive. It’s not strays too much from the regular season rotation, which really stretches bullpens.
I think it would be very difficult to prove that his pitch count in the CWS was the causal factor. He said at the time he felt great, the ball was coming out easy, he told the coaches not to take him out. Now, its still their decision and responsibility, but what if they take him out, and he still needs TJS at this time? Regardless of whether the win or not.
Somebody could look up his pitch count for the series and season, and see if he was “over used” compared to other NCAA pitchers and/or pitchers with TJS. I’m guessing that for young, developing players with TJS, their is probably considerable variability in their pitch counts.
Able said he felt great, had a memorable, lifetime experience and achievement. I suspect he’ll recover and if not, the alternatives are many, including not finishing the game, needing the surgery anyway, and potentially not winning the series.
RE the QB battle, I hope its a battle. I don’t see Luton making huges strides in decision making and his delivery this late in his career, but it is the first time he’s had the same college coaching staff two years in a row. Maybe he’s improved.
I’m guessing Gebbia is starting by Pac 12 play, and Luton is a decent backup. Still need to use the third guy at the goal line as a run threat once in a while to keep teams guessing.
A friend of mine who coaches travel ball said Abel threw over 2600 pitches in games between Feb and July of his senior year. He said every outing was over 100 pitches. If true, he was likely overused before he even arrived on campus.
Holy fuck!
The Rev is on point. That is where the overuse happens. Abel did not run up a ton of innings during the regular season. The other thing about him is that he throws a high arm stress 12-6 curve.
I wonder how much information is out there regarding Tommy John surgery and arm overuse. If it is correlated stronger with cumulative overuse from lots of significant outings or if it relates more to longer outings in general. Be interesting to read some study summaries if they are out there.
Virtually every teenage boy probably has arm overuse and ain’t from pitching.
New uniforms? Or are these old? Cant tell if these are the ones we used during part of GAs final year? Numbers look almost like we’re going the oversized route like Oregon, except not quite as extreme.
https://twitter.com/AndresDewerk408/status/1116192001697796096?s=19
Nvm, it’s just the existing retro Benny uniform from last October.
The one thing about Abel in the CWS finale was that his control was perfect till the end, so he was not physically tired. Then he had almost six moths of recovery time.
Old news? LaMone Williams gets another year. 6’3″, 287 lbs.
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-one-more-season-for-lamone-williams/article_ee33ea99-fba9-51e7-ab15-dad2f3b265cb.html
So best case is that Abel comes back in the very late season next year. Given his pro potential, i would venture he does not pitch next year and they are very conservative with him.
Does he pitch again for OSU? He would be draft eligible next year.
This leaves a huge hole in the pitching staff next season. PC had a run going of seeming to find one super stud pitcher every year, with a few exceptions. So the team always had a anchor in each class.
Eisart and Jake M will be drafted. Bryce and Pierce graduate. Gambrell probably gets drafted on potential. Verberg?
Chamberlain is the probable Friday guy, but has not started or pitched extended innings.
Burns can throw hard but has been spotty. Sometimes good and sometimes terrible.
I wonder if this changes the way they use the frosh pitchers. Playing the long game, they need to find out what they have next year. There will be opportunities galore for the incoming freshman pitchers.
Do they try to find and add a JC pitcher for next season?
Jake Pfennigs was drafted by the Padres out of high school. Of our frosh, only Pfennigs and Dukart were drafted. I’d pencil in Pfennigs as a starter next year.

OSU wins mens racquetball national championship, women come in second. Can the racquetball coach, coach mens basketball?
Can’t imagine men’s basketball without a little tinkle dribbling on the floor.
Depends….
Didn’t they beat USC without Lil’ Tinks and his domination of the basketball?
I noticed an article about Luke’s debut in Mexico. Looked at the comments and was astounded at the number of haters out there who just won’t let it go — and a number of them seem to be yucks.
Someone has to have no life to leave comments about Heimlich.
They probably want him to have no life because they have no life.
Well put…
I sent this email to nick daschell – Olive reporters say they don’t read the comments – perhaps they don’t read their emails either but I don’t use twitter or FB so thought I’d try.
“Ho-hum. Why do you continue to paste your precious references into news of Luke Heimlich? Anyone with interest knows the background. I thought it was more significant that the manager left LH in the game although he gave up two early home runs. OTOH, I guess what you wrote wasn’t about sports at all.”
You’re a fucking moron. What a miserable existence you must live.
Ironic post of the day
Hmm. I don’t find wintering near San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, at all miserable.
Bravo…
Nobody likes you
Looks like someone found the Cowgirl’s weakness.
I hope you’re talking about Nick Daschell, unless you are Nick Daschell?
I just assumed it was that recruiting writer that cant stop sucking duck dick?
Just notices the NYT ran an article yesterday on Heimlich’s debut:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/10/sports/luke-heimlich-mexican-league.html
“When city officials in Laredo, Tex., learned of Heimlich’s signing, they sent letters to the team notifying them of a city ordinance that prohibits sex offenders at city parks and Uni-Trade Stadium, where the Tecolotes play in Texas. The team provided records from Oregon that showed Heimlich no longer needed to register as a sex offender because his juvenile conviction was expunged, said Rafael Benavides, a spokesman for the city of Laredo.
“Our Laredo Police Department also confirmed that the player’s background check reflects no conviction criminal history information in the Washington State Patrol files,” Benavides said in a statement. “As it stands, the player is not required to register with the State of Texas and has an affirmative defense under our city ordinance.”
Heimlich would have his first chance to play in Texas next week when the Tecolotes return from a road trip.
“There is nothing that could have prevented him from signing in the league,” Mansur said in Spanish, adding, “in reality, I hope the past is left behind for the future.”
“
Whoa, this is crazy. Someone found and used factual information regarding Luke Heimlich having no conviction? Mind. Blown.
You’ll notice it’s not the Oregonian.
And it is not the NYT who is as bad as the Oregonian. The NYT is only quoting the local Mexican officials… Mexican officials can get this right but our United States media can’t.
waiting for Nick Daschel to pick up on the NYT article, edit and paste in his LH folder.
That’s pretty shocking that an entity was actually rational about the Heimlich case. Unfortunately, the NYT went for the salacious headline. I guess the word “convicted” just pops more than “adjudicated”? As I understand he was never convicted of anything. He was adjudicated as a minor.
Correct. Facts are hard.
“I hope the past is left behind for the future.” Poetic.
Nick Daschel, not so much. “Can’t assume much of anything in our business. Thanks for reading” I guess he’s saying he has to keep inserting all that old stuff because there might still be somebody out there who needs to read it.
“Click bait is my job. Thanks for clicking!”
Not sure if this was posted, but Gebbia interview from 2 days ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zETVeLzxq4
Looking forward to reading about Gebbia’s play in the spring game. I’m hopeful once he gets comfortable we’ll see the kind of QB play we haven’t seen since Moore’s senior year.
The old side of the stadium looks, well, old…
Might as well not be posted. Volume is so bad and wind noise makes it nearly impossible to hear.
There’s an “x” in the corner of your browser. You can just click it.
I’m sure you have a point, but I can’t figure out what it is. “x” out so I can skip over it? Already did that.
Was able to hear both the interviewer and Gebbia just fine. The wind was there but not so much that I couldn’t understand either of them.
Me too. CJ might have some hearing issues.
What did you say?
OK, cleaned the shit out of my ears and tried again…
Still the same low volume and wind makes it extremely hard to hear.

So Lydia Parker is active on Twitter today.
ASUs lineup looks a lot like OSU’s 2018 lineup. Lots of good hitters around the .300 mark – a good hitting team.
This looks like Smith’s last few teams at Indiana. Lots of good hitters.
Eisert does not have it.
ASU pitcher is good.
Burns comes on the get the final out of the b6, starting 3-0 and coming back for the K
Beavs down 3-1, ASU has left 11 on base so far.
With all of the injuries, would be nice to get one win this weekend.
One W isn’t out of the question, even after this loss. Marsh had a heck of a game, 3 hitter on 121 very smooth pitches.
He entered the game with an ERA of 2.19; the projected devil starter Saturday has an ERA over twice that: 5.53.
OTOH, devils were averaging over 9.5 runs/game and only got 4 tonight…….is a return to the mean coming?
I’m surprised we only gave up 4 runs since they got 12 hits.
We gotta get more than one damn run on offense though, jeez.
1) 14 LOB for devil
2) Beavs likely to get better offense vs next devil pitcher…….see ERA above.
Question for me is whether or not even 5-8 runs for the Beavs will result in a W, given ASU offense, they aren’t gonna strand 14 very often. Torkelson and Bishop aren’t settling for 1 RBI between them very often either, as they did tonight.
Seems as though OSU continues to screw over those who have given so much to the school.

Me thinks it’s time to cut administrators, useless programs, and Scott Barnes.
Maybe it’s all because he’s a duck. I guess I can understand and it would be a nice little FU to duck nation if that were the reason, but we know it isn’t.
Just glad I didn’t get into radio. I can’t believe he seriously only pulls in 25K as a radio announcer, without medical benefits either. How is that even possible?
Breaks down to about $12/hour if he were a full time employee.
I dont love the guy as the Beavers announcer, but he’s worth much more than that.
Jon Warren must have somehow switched employee IDs with Parker and had the check routed to the opposite guys.
This is soo very Beaver like, right? “working on it”….for 20 years?
From Lydia:
I was flipping through Sling TV channels and came across a Portland Pilots game. The analyst sounded like Jim Wilson. He doesn’t do Pilots TV games does he?
I suspected you were a Slinger.
With the shades open so all the neighbors can watch
I think Wilson has some sort of gig with NBC Sports Northwest; were they doing that Pilots game?
No, it was some weird channel called Stadium? The game was in Portland, I didn’t stick around that long, but it sure sounded like him.
Matt Boyd leads the Majors in strikeouts.
Anybody think the new Oregon State uniforms are going to follow some of the elements they used in these crappy new Michigan State ones? These are pretty ugly.
https://twitter.com/MSU_Football/status/1117062628461953025?s=19
I’m not sure, but the probability of OSU nailing uniforms is about 1%.
Yikes.
1% may be a bit generous.
Only saving grace for hope I have is that Gebbia recently mentioned in an interview that JS preferred QBs to have single digit numbers. That was interesting to me and leads me to believe he’s the type of coach that might be OCD about uniforms to a degree and have a specific look that he’s going for to fit the culture.
Probables abridores:
Sábado 13: PD Omar Bencomo (1-0, 3.38 ERA) vs. PD Rolando Valdez (0-1, 7.20 ERA).
Domingo 14: PZ Luke Heimlich (0-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. PZ Jonathan Sánchez (0-1, 7.20 ERA).
Wait… If we suck at baseball now, what are we good at? We don’t even compete in wrestling or gymnastics anymore. We are shitty across the board. Tough deal…
Isn’t the gymnastics team going to the NCAA championships?
He’s talking about his ducks
Well, we don’t have to wait for this because WE KNOW YOU SUCK AND YOU ARE SHITTY AT EVERYTHING!
Decided to check out practice today. OL having issues today, and a couple of fumbled snaps in the first couple of series(Luton and Gebbia both had 1).
Irish has had a couple nice plays at WR already.
It’s still early in the practice.
Anything specific you guys want me to watch for?
It’s wet out but at least rain is on and off.
Keep an eye on the cheerleaders!
I wish, but they didnt travel.i’d say only a few hundred fans here today
The center problem should be solved when the AZ transfer gets on campus. The guys getting snaps now will be backups.
Trajon cotton caused a fumble on BJ Baylor. Good to see Cotton getting reps
Nick Moore is not the answer at qb. That’s pretty obvious
Gould had a really nice grab on a well defended pass, then shook his defender and took it to the house. As fast as advertised.
Lots of bench reps today so its hard to get a good gauge of either side of the ball because the compeition is almost always 2nd/3rd stringers
Currently playing a clean version of EazyE, Real Muthafuckin Gs on the sound system. Love the music choice, but didnt know a clean version could even be made of this song
Practice is already over. Ended with a drive led by Gebbia, who made a nice pass to Flemings for a 1st and goal situation at the 1, but then missed on 3 straight pass, resulting in no score.
D Tackle issues seem to be better this year, with Aydun and Hodgins playing along with Whitley. Whitley is short, but strong and disruptive. Doesnt appear to have much speed though. But those 3 together make a decent front.
Elu Aydun is such a massive human being. Check out this pic. His arm is bigger than my leg.

You’re younger than I expected
You are very youthful looking. Child prodigy?
I shaved this morning. Crazy thing is, I’m 6 feet tall and 170lbs and he literally makes me look like a kid. That’s a full sized NCAA football I’m holding. If Aydun painted himself green, they wouldn’t need to use cgi in the next Avengers movie.

I’m out of the loop with the whole “Hire Mike Parker” movement… I know his daughter is leading the charge on Twitter, but I’ve got no idea what it’s about? Someone fill me in?
Lydia says he is listed as part of the Athletic Dept but is employed by Learfield/IMG radio. Employed at an implied $25k/year, with limited healthcare.
I think Lydia got started, at least partially, by the current discussion of the possibility of adding a third paid assistant coach to D1 baseball.
Seems to me he has been distracted by the dustup.
I’ll link Parker’s twitter and Lydia’s later, you can catch up pretty quickly with those links.
https://twitter.com/MEPOSU
https://twitter.com/LydiaParker123
From Parker’s twitter:
Well, it’s been an interesting 24 hours! I love my daughter and appreciate her love for me. I reiterate that I love the work I am blessed to do, I am honored to do it for Oregon State, and I believe I’ve always been treated fairly.
One of many from Lydia:
Please listen to this compilation and consider what Mike Parker has meant to Beaver Nation for the past TWENTY years. I hope that you will stand behind me and help me make some noise because lord knows he is too humble to make noise himself.
Thanks OOB. That makes sense I guess.
Part of the problem is her dad took a low paying job with poor benefits at for a radio broadcaster not affiliated with OSU. Another part is OSU has strung them along for several years and pretended like they’re working on getting Parker signed on as an OSU employee(with benefits and PERS retirement plan), but we all know OSU is notorious for going the cheap route for all things OSU athletics.
Maybe the napkin video episode delayed any progress in that area. Not sure.
But Parker is a big boy. He doesn’t have to keep working at the job he loves for crap pay. There is better paying work to be had, although he may not enjoy it as much. We all make these decisions in life.
All true, as far as I can tell.
And yet Barnes gets 900k,
That is unbelievable. Essentially hired by GA.
I think you are spot on Nicebeaver, regardless of whether there were promises implied, Lydia is out of line on this one with her use of social media. I know she wants to embarrass OSU in to hiring her father, but he needs to speak for himself. It puts Mike in an awkward position.
We are all free agents in the job world, Mike Parker is a big boy. Though, I still can’t believe his annual salary is just 25k, if that is indeed true.
What exactly does she want? For Parker to be hired by the baseball team as a coach?
Not sure I get it. He should be fired from radio and then never hired again in any other capacity.
She wants Dad to be an employee of OSU, sounds like better pay and benefits than working for Learfield? I liked her defense of Heimlich, but this is embarrassing whether one likes Parker’s work or not.
Bryce K’s two and finishes the b5 still up 4-1 having allowed only 2 hits so far. He’s at 84 pitches with 4 K’s and 2 bb’s.
First three devils each go yard to start the b6, tie ballgame!
Joe Casey with monster at bat.
Beavs defense for double play in the bottom of the inning!
6-4 Beavs going into the 9th!
Casey a 10 pitch at bat, then your good ‘ol 9-2-5 double play. Good stuff, and Pat Casey smiles (for just a moment, that missed sign on suicide squeeze brings Case back to reality).
That was a major F up, but thankfully it doesn’t matter. Jake M at his best.
JAKE !!
Beavs win 6-4
Nice W. Good RPI win. We need to win the series.
Beavs/ASU rubber match is tomorrow at 12:30.
Blazers playoff game with OKC also starts at 12:30.
Guess I’ll be spending the afternoon in front of the tv tomorrow.
They all take a backseat to the Masters, starting at 11:00.
Forgot about that. The one time I watch golf is the last couple couple hours of the Masters.
Thanks.
Final round is on now. Moved up due to weather or were they avoiding a scheduling conflict with the beav game…..
Thanks for the notice. Had the DVR set for 11:00.
Did anyone go to the scrimmage? Thoughts on Gebbia?
None of our QBs looked sharp yesterday. Could be partially due to most of our 1st string offense sitting out(No jefferson/Hodgins/Lindsey/Bradford, and probably even more out I didnt notice)
Luton took 1st team snaps mostly and Gebbia 2nd(which was really more like 3rd string) followed by Nick Moore and then Colletto.
Overall, I’d say Luton has the slight edge stil, but both Gebbia and Luton had some bad throws where it was basically a 50/50 ball for the WR vs the defense. Both QB turned the ball over more than once. Both have a pretty smooth throwing motion, but Gebbia’s possessions felt a little more rushed, possibly because he had the lesser quality line in front of him.
Gebbia did get the final drive of the practice, which ended on a nice mid range pass to a wide open Flemings who got stopped at the 1. Gebbia then got 3 more plays to try to complete the drive with a TD and failed to complete a pass on 3 straight plays.(why not run for 1 yard?) Defense wins today. Not sure of he was 100% to blame for the endzone failure, because he looked like he had plenty of space on 1 play for a QB keeper into the end zone but elected for a fade into the left corner. Other QBs ran today, so I’m not sure if Gebbia was told not to or if he chose not to.
Overall, I dont feel great at QB yet, but better than any of the past since Mannion left. Been a long time since we’ve had more than 1 QB who thinks pass first. Luton may have the ever so slight edge still, but I still need to see both QBs get reps with the real 1st stringers to know.
Not good to hear Luton is still our guy.
It’ll be frustrating if Gebbia can’t clearly outplay Luton and win the job. But I can see it being a delicate team chemistry situation if it’s a marginal toss-up based on practice performance.
I’d also love Luton to prove me wrong and finally develop into a consistent QB that can keep up with the speed of the game. This is his first year in the same system as the year before, so improvement and increased frequency of his highs (Colorado) makes sense, but that being enough to outweigh his lows (every other game) is really hard to imagine.
I’d really just like to see Gebbia clearly separate himself so we have a clear #1 guy, if he can’t do that it’ll be pretty disappointing and would be an omen on the upcoming season.
I expect him to dominate in the Fall. He’s still learning. Luton has what, 3+ years over him? It’s actually a bad omen (or good sign if you like Gebbia) Luton can’t win the job outright given his experience in the system. The separation should come this Fall. If not, I’d be worried. I believe strongly in Gebbia, and it’s not based on stars. It’s based on his film and mentality.
Agree with this. It’s nearly a neck and neck race right now, with Gebbia still yet to play a single game with this team. He has the best chance of the 2 to grab the job full time if he keeps progressing. He seems like a pretty focused guy who is driven to get the results he wants, while also looking relaxed about it.
One other noticeable difference between these 2 guys I didnt mention, Gebbia is much shorter than Luton. I haven’t looked up his official measurements, but I would guess he’s right around 6′ or 6’1″
(Ok, looked it up, roster says 6’2″. That may be a bit of a rounding up situation. I also looked at his Rivals and 247 stats from highschool which both say 6’3″. There’s no way that is accurate. Maybe with a helmet on)
Gebbia’s height shouldn’t be an issue. Luton is unusually tall, so it might just be perspective.
Lots of players from yesterday had me looking up the roster just so I could see who was making the play. We had several new faces in the scrimmage, or guys we dont usually see. Irish was probably the top WR of the day, so that tells you how thin we were at WR. I think Kolby Taylor was out too.
Gob Dockery mad a really nice deep TD catch actually and he was one of those guys I had to say “who the f is this guy?”(he’s Dare Dockery’s little brother, walkon)
I watched Jaelen Bush quite a bit because I he’s a friend of the family. He moved from DE to RT this year. He has a good chance to get meaningful reps at his new position I think. Currently still putting on weight, but at 6′ 7” and 277 lbs, he was doing a good job of clearing OL out of his path and also protecting his side of the pocket. Probably wont get a ton of in game experience this season but I can see him eventually becoming a guy they rotate in at RT and possibly starting by next year if he keeps progressing at this rate.
Also, Brandon Kipper and Wellsfry are pretty imposing OLinemen. We could have some pretty big bodies playing next year, but they still need experience.
Our total OL numbers seem down for the upcoming season.

Angry’s boy Dukart with a big 2 out 2 rbi single to make it 4-0 Beavs after 4.5.
What’s he hitting .140 now?
Never thought I would long for the days when the guys were hitting .200 LOL
4-2 Beavs, top of the 8th. For having a good team, it looks pretty sparsely attended.
Attendance was likely affected by the 87 degree heat and the Masters in Golf.
Ballpark holds around 8800 and the count for the three games averaged around 3,200. Not too bad considering there are more options than in Corvallis.
UPDATE: Reported attendance actually averaged 3577
wow, just wow! Verberg comes back from 2-0 count to strike out Torkelsen to preserve 4-3 lead and win. Amazing job beavs.
Good road series win. ASU is tough but their luck may be running out with a short roster. Beavs in good shape to make the postseason. 10 of next 12 are at home.
BUT it does seem like the Beavs are a bit of a paper tiger. The offense can’t support the pitching consistently.
The only way Beavs advance in the postseason is to the stay in the winner’s bracket. Can’t get into the losers bracket or they’ll run out of pitching real fast.
Short week with Easter but then 5 games the following week. Will be pretty taxing on the arms. Need starters to have long outings.
Agreed. Also, the mid-week games are very telling of the pitching depth — losses to Portland, SDSU, and Oregon. I believe OSU has a losing record during the midweek.
The new rankings will be a bit interesting. Georgia and NC State currently 2nd and 3rd. Georgia loses two to lowly Tennessee, and NC State gets swept at home by Louisville. Beavs and Stanford are 4th and 5th, respectively — it will be PAC-12 as the top 3 teams in the nation, if Georgia and NC State slide enough. Will be interesting (frustrating) if Mississippi State leap frogs.
While that was a good series win, I don’t think the Beavs will move up going 2-2 this week.
Of the 5 remaining conference series only one of them is against a team above them in the standings. Need to get a couple of sweeps at home vs Arizona, SC and Wazzu. The Cougs just won their first conference game today. Anything less than a sweep against them is unacceptable.
I don’t see the Beavs winning a series at Stanford. I do see them winning the other 4 though. 20+ conference wins is doable and a 2nd place finish along with a strong RPI should be enough to host another regional.
This is not a team that is capable of making it back to Omaha imo. But they are a top 20 team and capable of getting to the SR. Need to stop dropping midweek games against inferior competition.
The two games in Reno next week scare me. Nevada should have won both games here last year and they know it.
With Abel out, their chances of even getting to a super regional are slim IMO. I really don’t have any expectations this year other than; get to the tournament, and raise some hell! Unless somebody outside of Eisert or Fehmel gets hot ala Reyes 2007, or Abel 2018, this team will go about as far as the bats will take them. Grambell looking really good today, but need that hot arm come tournament time.
Gambrell has the physical talent to be that guy. He looked great today.
I don’t know if this was already said but what a catch by Malone.
That was a great catch. Now if he could actually get a hit with men on base instead of popping up.
Exactly. I thought he juggled and dropped the ball at first.
Heimlich got shelled; 5 earned runs in 4.1 innings.
Just heard spring game next Saturday (April 20th) is at 11. Seems earlier than normal.
Pac 12 network has oregon the same day at 2. Probably driven by tv time slots available.
Figured more softball would be televised and spring games would be on the plus channel.
Eggers with a football update, post Mountinside HS practice.
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/425364-331680-oregon-state-football-gets-to-test-its-youth
Welp, I’m man enough to admit when I’m wrong. Beavs move up to No 2 in the D1 baseball poll after a 2-2 week. Pac-12 has 3 of the top 4 (UCLA – 1st, Stanford – 4th).
ASSU drops to 16th
https://d1baseball.com/rankings/college-baseball-top-25-ucla-april15/
Does anyone here actually believe the Beavs are the 2nd best team in the country? Top 10?
Well we’re #2 in RPI and we’re #3 in Boyd’s ISR. ASU averages 27 runs per 3-game series and we allowed only 11 runs. ASUs previous low for runs in a series was 20.
Maybe we’re not the clear dominating #1 that we’ve been the last 2 years, and our hitting is just average, but our pitching is still top 5 in the country, and we’ve got the best overall player in the country. This team’s stats have a lot of similarities to the 2013-2014 teams, who were #3 and #1 overall seeds in the tournament.
On base percentage, which I think is the biggest indicator for winning a game:
2013 team had an on base percentage of .377 and they allowed opponents .292
2014 team had an on base percentage of .380 and they allowed opponents .298
2019 team has an on base percentage of .370 and they allow opponents .293
Pretty similar. Each has about an 8% better chance per batter to get on base vs their opponent
For comparison, 2018 team had an on base percentage of .416 and allowed opponents .315
And probably one of the best all time teams in college baseball, 2017, an on base percentage of .385 and allowed opponents .265, a 12% better chance per batter to get on
When we missed the tourney in 2016 we were at .368 and allowed .317, only 5% higher chance per batter to get on
Wow, surprised Beavs moved up to #2, like as you said, with a 2-2 record on the week. Thought Stanford would move up, especially since comparing their sweep of Washington to MSU’s sweep of Alabama….hmmmm. Stanford had better quality series win. D1 baseball really impressed withBeavs going on the road and getting the Ws. I heard D1 Kendall Rogers was at the ASU series, so a bit of beaver bias….?
https://www.lmtonline.com/sports/article/Tecos-give-up-15-runs-drop-series-at-Saltillo-13767359.php
It’s best not to have the #1 seed. They haven’t won the title in like 20 years.

Jack Washburn. Rhp next year if he doesn’t want to play pro ball right away.
Since dad was a long time MLB player, the family will not have dollar signs in their eyes. I would bet he is on campus as long as Yeskie is around when signing day happens.
Another Wisconsin guy to join Clayton and Burns; pipeline???
Anthony Beavers has verbally committed to the ducks. Media will live the word play with this one. Yay!
Unless he can kick I really don’t care.
Apparently Sean Mannion signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings for $900K.
Nebraska punter Caleb Lightbourn entered the transfer portal. First coach he follows after it was announced was Jake Cookus. He’s also from Camas, WA. So who knows, we may have another Nebraska transfer coming this way.
https://247sports.com/Player/Caleb-Lightbourn-87591/
Maybe BeaverGopher can shed some light on the history of this Gopher RB in the portal from Ontario Canada?
https://247sports.com/Player/Jonathan-Femi-Cole-44992/
Looks to have good size and decent stats, but was never really given a chance.
Ross Bowers, CAL QB is in the portal as well, but doesn’t he have to sit out 1 year per the PAC-12 to Pac-12 school rule if he were to transfer to another Pac-12 school?
https://247sports.com/Player/Ross-Bowers-42855/
Nicebeaver, didn’t see that, oh well. he also was sacked for 142 yards in a season…so he was a statue, but has the tangibles.
There is no conference specific rule currently.
Nationally, players are required to sit for 1 academic year before playing at their new school.
Exceptions exist for graduate transfers, anybody the NCAA grants a hardship waiver to, and kids with litigious families that the NCAA bows down to(see Tate Martell)
Then I would look at going after Ross Bowers then? I’m trying to find film on him:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dw0Tr0qUuE
Ya, I’d want him as our QB!
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but he already transferred to Northern Illinois at the end of March. *sad trombone sound*
https://www.hustlebelt.com/2019/3/31/18289820/former-cal-quarterback-ross-bowers-to-transfer-to-northern-illinois
Never really played except in the spring games. The kid is really put together and looks a lot like Adrian Peterson. Unfortunately he fumbles like the aforementioned AP. If my memory serves me, I believe a couples years ago he coughed it up three times in three caries in the spring game. He was behind some excellent backs and i think the word was that he was always behind the curve with fundamentals like pass blocking. He is a Canuk, so he drinks maple syrup instead of Gatorade. Got passed up by a couple true frosh backs last year after the two senior bell cows were lost to ACL injuries. He was a Kill recruit. Probably a special teamer, but could win bodybuilding contests.
three times in three caries – too much maple syrup – unavoidable connection for a dentist.
He’d fit in perfectly at OSU. Check out this amazing kickoff he made vs Ohio State. Johnny Hekker would be proud.

Guy needs a hug
I wonder if Frosty the Cornman will block him from coming to Corvallis. Didn’t he get butt hurt last year losing all those players our football powerhouse?
The rules have changed since then, so Frost doesn’t have that power over his players anymore.
I just love that Rliey’s reaction is to drop his gum wrapper. Classic.
I was wondering if someone was going to watch that far and comment on that incident. lol It’s right up there with mouth wide open gawking out into space then walking away from the mishap play with his head down.
Dag-nabbit!!
What a beauty!! LOL. From the angle of his planter foot and swipe of kicking foot, I would hope he was attempting an on-side kick.
Oh gosh, this guy’s gonna get a scholarship offer from OSU for sure.
#LOTB
No doubt.
Evina Westbrook is officially transferring.
I honestly would guess it’s not OSU though that would be huge.
She is from Salem, OR. So if her family still lives in Salem, OR area, then it wouldn’t be too far fetched for her to play at Oregon State for her Jr and Senior season, no?
When she committed to Tennessee, sounded like she wanted to get away for school. If she wanted to come home, she would have already announced it.
I had heard, and I think it was last November, that Evina wasn’t happy at Tennessee and considering a transfer. I also recall hearing that OSU was one of her potential landing spots so we’ll have to wait and see but I would think with that kind of talent that Rueck will reach out to her.
I bet she ends up at ND.
She’ll only sit on her tuffet at ND.
From Lundeberg’s twitter this afternoon…….
Looks like we’ll be seeing more of that other “niner”, Andy Armstrong.
I’m wishing I could spend a bit of time in Lincoln, NE this fall to watch this kid play some saftey. He is fast downhill and is an extremely hard hitter. He reminds me of Mitch Meeuwsen, Al Afalava, Greg Layborn, and Sabby Piscitelli.

Go Beavs!
Hopefully our AD has good relationships with these guys and their families. Cha-ching down the road.
Thinking Casey’s relationship may be enough. Hopefully he’ll be AD by then.
Yeskie as HC?

D1 Baseball still has Beavs as overall #2 seed in tournament
https://d1baseball.com/projections/college-baseball-projected-field-of-64-april-17/
and Baseball America has Beavs as overall #5 seed, mirroring their current BA rank
https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/projected-field-of-64-41719/
a couple notes from the Arizona Daily Star:
Oregon State (25-8-1, 11-4) ranks third in the Pac-12 and sixth in the nation with an ERA of 2.83. The Beavers rank second in the league and seventh nationally with a WHIP of 1.13. The Wildcats rank 263rd at 1.76. Only one UA pitcher has a WHIP under 1.50: right-hander Quinn Flanagan (1.40).
The series finale in Corvallis will be televised on ESPNU — the only regular-season Pac-12 game airing on an ESPN network this year. (Head coach) Johnson said that game was picked because the Wildcats and Beavers were the two winningest programs in the league over the previous three seasons.
WBB gets committment from 6’9″ Serbian post Jelena Mitrovic.
On film, she looks like a project, maybe kinda like Jo was. She looks slow and gets pushed around by some smaller players. Obviously she can protect the rim, but not much on this film of her offensively. Will be cool to see Ron Callan have to sing the Serbian national anthem her senior year, though.

Everyone’s favorite prognosticator, Sidd Finch, says Barnes is going after the TA&M opening. Unless he gets it, will we ever know?
https://twitter.com/SiddFinch4/status/1118693426550251520?s=19
And we’re that much closer to Angry’s doomsday scenario of Mike Riley as Oregon State AD. Could you imagine?
Sadly, yes I can.
Barnes is the Bernie Madoff of college athletics.
Hip hip!
This might be worth its own thread, because it will happen if Riley lives long enough.
So given that, what happens when Riley is AD? Many say his “aw shucks” thing sits well with donors.
Please let him get it, and Casey takes the AD job.
With his stellar resume at Pitt and now at OSU, Texas A and M has to be chomping at the bit to hire him. Can you imagine the backlash from A and M fans if this is their AD hire..with that said, yes please go away Barnes. I heard from multiple boosters at the basketball tourney they don’t like him at all and OSU coaches don’t think he is competent.
Yeah I don’t see any chance A&M hires him unless their President is weak minded and clueless about athletics like Ed Ray. Barnes preys on bad Presidents. He’s a predator, not an AD.
Hated the guy from day 1 and again was told by many I was wrong.
Texas A&M sounds perfect for Barnes, this from the Scoop:
Case coaching, Bails AD?
Interesting thought. I have no idea of Bails ability to do a good job as AD, he seems to be a stand up guy though and that alone would garner support.
I’ve always wondered how Casey would work out as AD, wondered if some good people would find him hard to work for.
PS: noticed Sidd teases the idea of Casey returning to coaching…SOMEWHERE
Seems way more athletic than Jo. She could easily be a player after a year or two of grooming which Rueck has proven effective at over the years. This seems like a great find. You can’t teach someone to be 6′ 9″
Or be athletic. Girl looks likes she’s got bricks in the shoes.
Backup at best, hopefully isn’t pressed into extended action.
Come on she has a two inch vertical,
Commentary on the “morality” of college football if the game cannot be played safely to avoid concussions and CTE:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/18/sports/colorado-football.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage
I didn’t like the use of the term “morality” and think of it more as an ethical question. I suspect versions of this question will continue to be asked, but given the amount of money around college football, the game will persist until viewers do not support it.
If you’re a thigh guy:
https://mobile.twitter.com/beavergym?lang=en
Good luck at Nationals!
Baseball needs 2 of 3 to keep pace with UCLA and Stanford. Win game 1 is the key.
Starting pitching needs to go deep in every game with Mon and Tues vs Nevada. Guys like pfennings and tweedt need to step up in the weekday games.
Is Bailey trying to start the worst lineup?!?!? Thought McGarry and Casey were seeing the ball well last weekend.
Looks to be playing percentages, going with RH hitters.
Seems that way, I get it, especially since the guy is pitching 6+ era. I’d have McGarry in there somewhere.
How about as PH? As the potential tying run? In the b6?
Malone gets a hit and his BA goes up 10 points.
what is going on with eisert… forgot to put the invisible on his fastball today
Just when it feels like “too late nate” happening, right before our eyes, Eisert gets the K (such as it was) to end the t4…………with a pitch count of 79
UPDATE: Man, that Nate is something! 6 K’s in a row to follow that visit!!
On to the b6, down 4-2
Eisert at 106 pitches
For all you Mike Parker haters (dislikers?), how ’bout those PAC12 announcers setting in San Francisco and calling the game? Heard enough of their personal stories?
Sheesh, can’t Larry Scot contribute a few bucks to at least fly those guys to Goss?
Sheesh, Beavs plate 4 after 2 outs in the 8th, and left 1 on 3rd. 8-4 good guys
;)
Nice. Down 4-1 and come back to win 8-4
Great comeback last night. Let’s not forget, Eisert is learning how to be a starter weekend after weekend. This is always the time of year when Yeskie and Casey when he was coaching would use moments like last night to teach and test their pitchers. We have seen how this can pay off at the end of the season. Yeskie can’t pull a pitcher every time he gets in a tough situation or they will never learn how to work through it. Great bull pin work last night.
It’s more that teams have a lot better scouting report on Eisert with the amount of innings he’s thrown. Now he’ll need to make adjustments.
Right, that’s part of being a starter long term weekend after weekend versus filling in for an injury. It’s just like learning how to get through a lineup 2,3,4 times. Glad you agree with me.
Well said, krol. 90% of the game is half mental, right?
Been a while since the “Too Late Nate” pattern was established. Lately it seems his decisions (gambles?) have worked out, mostly.
It is always fascinating to look at the team dynamics from the outside, to wonder what factors go in to some of these critical decisions. Eisert’s turn around after Yeskie’s visit wasn’t something many would have predicted!
The proposal for the third paid assistant in college baseball (and softball) has FAILED. The Big 12 and Big 10 voted no.
ASU skipper, Tracy Smith reacts:
Any chance the failure of those two conferences to support the measure will hurt them with recruits?
Fitt has the story on D1
https://d1baseball.com/columns/fitt-defeat-of-third-assistant-plan-deals-college-baseball-a-major-blow/
Such bullshit! Gotta be some truth to the rumors that Texas, and the other big money schools that voted against this, already get these third assistants paid on the down low, and they don’t want to lose that edge.
Whether or not you like Mike Parker, this piece will give you something to think about, from Vassar College’s Student Newspaper of Record since 1866, no less:
http://miscellanynews.org/2019/04/18/sports/dont-drop-the-mic-oregon-state-must-hire-beloved-parker/
The piece recaps the recent twitter back and forth and includes quotes from Nick Madrigal, Aleah Goodman, Joe Casey, and others.
If he wants better benefits, he should take a stand against his employer. If he quits, he could probably get public support to force his employers hand. Plus they probably won’t have anyone to take over. He has a lot of leverage.
I don’t think OSU should hire him. Outside of pro teams, very few if any announcers are employed by the school.
OSU could force the radio station to pay better benefits or they move to another station.
Hope Bryce gets 6 more wins this year!

Ethan Thompson is entering the NBA draft AND hiring an agent?
Hmmm….
Forgot, the rules allow a guy to return to school, even after hiring an agent now.

Barnes making fans again.
https://twitter.com/KendallRogers/status/1119431533612265472?s=19
Barnes is an idiot.
You have to wonder if Pat Casey didn’t come back because he didn’t want to work under Barnes.
Yet he left the door open to come back at some point (maybe when Barnes leaves).
Imagine having Barnes as your boss during the Luke shit storm.
But isnt he still working under Barnes now as an associate AD?
Andy Jenkins spoke out about the disappointment in whoever would have voted “no” with the rule to allow baseball teams to hire a 3rd coach.
Then, it’s revealed later in the evening Scott Barnes was one of the bigger no votes.
Gonna be awkward Monday morning when they run into each other at OSU.
https://twitter.com/AJ_OSU2/status/1119328854248574976?s=19
To be fair, Barnes did say he would support paying a third coach for Baseball, but since the vote included softball, he wouldn’t support it. He’s still an idiot.
It’s for allowing schools the option to hire a 3rd coach in both sports. Schools dont need to hire a 3rd coach.
His argument must be that the “haves” who can afford a 3rd softball coach will have a huge advantage over the “have nots”(OSU)
https://twitter.com/beaverfootball/status/1119658552291778560?s=21
Yikes.
Trolled by Nike again.
The big shoulder striping is awful and serves no purpose.
They made the ugly leg stripes bigger?
“Beavs” ???
Worst helmet in college football.
ffs smh
Yeah the helmet is bad.
And the phrase “Drippin'”
Drippin’ can be good for a beaver…or a bad thing.
I’m betting they’ll still use the white and orange helmets.
They look like arena league uniforms.
¯_(“/)_/¯ I like ’em.
Fugly. I’d rather have the sports bras back than this.
I don’t think anything could bring the sports bras back
I kind of like ’em.
I like that they fixed the shoulders in that they got rid of the rounded accents, that’s a major improvement. Font/letters is also an improvement. But the top shoulder stripe looks weird, maybe it’ll be better on the field. “Beavs” front and center looks tacky to me and pants would be better with different/smaller stripes or none at all.
Helmets stands out as weakest link to me.
It might all grow on me once I see them on the field, but overall super disappointed initially.
The more I look at them the less I like them. My first reaction was “not bad”, but then I looked at the things you guys brought up. The helmet is terrible, and it’s too “busy”. I think they’re better than the bras, but definitely not a great uniform. I’d like to see them on the field before completely deciding. I’m giving it a 4/10.
I don’t like the big blocky striped on top of the shoulders.
I don’t mind the numbers, they look huge and blocky which I’ll take all day over the tall skinny looks like my 3rd grader put them on with duct tape look hole is sporting these days.
Those are just embarrassingly ugly
It’s so simple to make a clean simple uniform; why can’t they figure it out?
Offense better dominate in the spring game. Defense will still be bad so if they stop the offense, that’s not good.
Worse than the unis is the “reveal video,” which Nike apparently subbed out to some unemployed UO grads with a digital video camera and an Adobe software suite.
What is the player doing in the woods anyway? Perhaps its Beaver version of Bigfoot: does a winning season really exist? How long since one has been seen? Where can it be found?
Already have seen “Blair Witch Beaver” jokes…
And trading on Oregon’s forest over-exploitation as legacy is old, already done by the Timbers….
I can imagine all the fun people will have with the intro.
How about the players emerge in new uniforms from the locker room onto a field? Not edgy enough?
Yeah they really need to let the timber industry of the past go and embrace the new PNW culture of heroin needles and bum camps.
Is Nicebeaver at the game?
Nope, my daughter had a soccer game this morning, so no Corvallis trip this year
Don’t care about uniforms. Get bowl eligible this year and whatever they are wearing will look just fine. Until they go away from Nike they are always going to get second hand crap.
Plus all the broken foot bones you can eat.
Like ’em or not, i feel like it was a misfire to release the new designs today, but then dress up recruits in our old uniforms for their photoshoots.
Let them try on the new threads and show them off on social media. Why not? Would lead to more/better buzz for the program.
New uniforms are absolute garbage. Trash.
It’s not hard to design good uniforms. Hell, plain black and white uniforms are a good start. Perhaps throw in a helmet with the number on the side, or the cursive Beavers inscribed.
Went to the “spring game” – didn’t stay until the end. Supposed to “start” at 11, but no real sustained scrimmage action until noon or later.
Team didn’t look impressive.
Random thoughts:
-3 (Gebbia) is inaccurate. Lots of passes too high, behind the receiver, not far enough, etc.
-13 (Jesiah Irish) caught a lot of passes, made a couple of great catches, but might not finish the season healthy with the way his QB’s lead him into big hits.
-22 and 21 (Jefferson and Pierce) looked sharp – running game looks to again be the strength of this offense.
-20 (B.J. Baylor) got plenty of carries and scored two TDs while I was watching.
-7 (Moore) dropped back for only a couple of passes but looked awful – one pass was woefully short on a deep route.
-46 (Choukair) only had one “long-ish” FG attempt while I was there and he missed it badly low (might have been blocked?)
-58 (Vanderlaan) called for a foolish holding penalty to stall a drive
-56 (Cordasco) whistled for a false start – unforced errors will kill us
-12 (Colletto) got the “2nd team” reps during the 2-minute drill, 6 (Luton) got 1st team – no sign of 3 (Gebbia) during this drill
-5 (Taylor) made some nice plays, but also dropped a TD pass in the red zone
-13 (Cotton) looked like he was playing solid coverage on the outside, closing quickly and making nice tackles on passes to his area, had one pass breakup that I saw
-10 (Onu-Hicks) almost had an INT, and did have a tackle for loss – looked good
-17 (McCartan) and 36 (Speights) combined to stop a short yardage play on 4th down for a turnover
That sounds like Beaver football to me.
Gebbia looked good on the YT film of the scrimmage.
What were his final stats? What you wrote isn’t matching what’s on film.
YT got his only completions really, the rest were way off target. The first YT throw almost kills Irish. :)
Those new uniforms look…okay. Nothing special either way, just looks like more Nike template crap that they use for every other team. Like Krol says, they’ll look better if we get bowl eligible this year.
Yeah, its really nothing more than a minor opportunity cost – could have looked good for the next several years instead of okay. But block and tackle and no one will really notice them.
If you can find a decent close up of the white numbers on the black jerseys, you will notice tree trunk rings built into the numbers subtly. The shoulder stripes I don’t like, but the change to larger orange stripes with a thin white stripe on the side of the black pants was the right decision. More cohesive look. Overall, I like the white jerseys the best, then the black, then the orange. At least the orange appears to be non metallic orange and more of the proper color orange.
Nice job by Fehmel and the D to get out of trouble in the 2nd.
1-0 Cats and now we’re batting in the bottom of 2nd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCuVVUltJ34
Wow that’s bad defense.
Yeah I’ll hold off on the excitement until they go up against a real defense. Our D is like a pack of wingmen for offenses
Groundouts from Mcgarry, Mendazona, and Armstrong, and Arizona is now up in the top of 3rd
Gebbia looks good in the 5 minutes of YT footage. Not sure what the guy above is talking about.
I’d like to see his final line if anyone has it.
I didn’t find any 5 min yt. I saw 3 passes from him in the UK interview. He completed a nice slant and made an ok pass on a hook but had a terrible throw on an out.
Gebbia 7-14 67yds td. Luton 6-9 94 yds
I didnt watch much of the scrimmage on the pac12 network, but can say Luton had the better receiver group to throw to. Gebbia was essentially playing with the 3rd stringers.
That being said, I still can’t see a huge difference between Luton and Gebbia at this point. The competition will be good to light a fire under both players through fall camp. Probably our best 2 deep at the QB position in some time(Since Mannion/Vaz?)
Gebbia has a quick release and strong arm but he’s behind on the learning curve. Luton has been in the Beaver system it seems like for 5 years now. Luton should be clearly ahead of Gebbia at this point so we shall see.
Lol. Lindgren’s system is at the start of it’s second year.
I don’t recall their being any system to the offense when GA was coaching the team. I would consider this Luton’s second year also.
Sounds like Coach DE is throwing in for Luton. Apparently, one of his son’s coached Jake at Idaho. DE is quoted in the paper that Luton has a “NFL arm”.
And a Pop Warner brain.
Nuke Laloosh from “Bull Durham”…
So you’re saying he’s Jeff George?
Fehmel gets 2 Ks and gets out of the 3rd unscathed but he’s thrown 54 pitches through 3
Beavs batting bottom of 3rd
Big inning for the Beavs in the 3rd
McMahan tripled, Malone sac fly, Casey doubles, Adley walked, Ober singles and Beavs have 3 runs in with only one out
9-1 good guys going to the b7
Fehmel has put down 16 in a row!
Dukart 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s, oh, and a bb. Now up to .207
And, tree sweeps ucks!
I was at the Spring Rodent fest in Reser. Beav QB was pretty spot on with his eval.
If you think Gebbia is going to be our savior, you may be in for a bit of a disappointment. He has some accuracy issues. Some of that may be from lack of reps. However, he seems to be a high effort thrower, which is more likely the culprit. Lutton has a more effortless motion and would seem to be the #1 from what I saw. I know it’s Easter, but refrain from crucifing me.
Chukair also shanked one to the left, besides the one that was blocked. He is ready for the season!
Any other field
Goal kickers out there at least practicing??
We should just turn this into a complete circus and get one of the girls from the soccer team. I mean how much worst could she be?
4-1 Beavs in the b3, and Dukart already has 2 hits! Up to .250.
JAKE !
Comes on in the t6 with no outs and bases loaded, closes out the frame with no damage.
B6, 5-3 Beavs.
Dukart up to .265 with a 8th inning double, he is the only Beav with 3 hits today.
9-3 t9, three outs away from a sweep! Verburg on to give JAKE a rest after 3 scoreless innings.
Barring a complete meltdown (which I don’t expect), this will be a sweep. Next weekend should be a sweep as well. Wazzu is terrible. Gotta sweep these series against the teams below them in the standings to have a shot at Stanford for the conference title.
Tree swept in Eugene this weekend and only the Friday night game was close. Currently they only have two conference losses but have played 3 fewer games. I have not looked at the rest of their schedule to see who they have left to play. I believe they did drop 2 of 3 at home to UCLA for their only conference losses.
Updated standings. This is a 3 horse race for the title imo. I don’t consider ASSU a contender anymore. Stanford definitely is in the drivers seat. No one outside of UCLA has beaten them. Beavs will get their shot next month…………..
Tree 13-2
Beavs 14-4
UCLA 11-4
ASSU 12-6
Goddamn. Maybe the light has come on for Dukart?
Guess players couldn’t even match the reveal rendering properly for the initial unifo tree m release. Black unis had the orange shoes to provide contrast in a way similar to white and orange unis which were rendered with black shoes so all provide contrast between helmet, Jersey and shoes. This also serves to put orange in the middle and bookmark on both other jerseys with black shoes.
This isn’t meant to be set it stone as far as what options OSU can wear on any given Saturday, but something tells me OSU will be very lazy with this and we will get black shoes with the black jerseys 90% of the time and orange shoes with the orange jerseys 75% of the time.
Would rather OSU stay truer to the artist renderings and do orange shoes with black jerseys 50% of the time and same with black shoes with the orange jerseys.
The weather will determine what uniform combo they wear. If it’s sunny and over 80 degrees, they’ll wear black helmets, black jerseys and pants, and black shoes.
Black sleeves too.
I wish I spent 40% less time reading this as I only comprehended 25%.
I’m right there with you, 110%
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hfYJsQAhl0
If you look at the stripes on the pants and shoulders, this limits the mixing of Orange Jerseys with black pants combo. The helmet should match the stripes, ie. the away uniform is the most cohesive look. Black thick stripes with the thin orange stripe in the middle matches the the thin orange stripe down the middle of the black helmet. The home jersey should have either an orange helmet with thin white stripe, or be the all black with a thin white stripe down the middle. The all orange look should have the thin white stripe on the black helmet. The shoes are fine for the home and away, but the orange alternate should have a white Nike Swoosh instead of an orange swoosh.

US taking tiny steps toward the European soccer model.
I thought crazy legs Colletto looked better in the spring game. He might serve us well as a back-up, alternative play maker.
Agree
He should be our Tebow light edition around the goal line.
He’s not terrible overall, either.
D1Baseball put 3 Pac12 teams at the top of their 25.
1. UCLA
2. OSU
3. Stanford
Arizona State also comes in at 15.
i guess for all of our hand wringing about SEC and ACC schools in the past getting higher rankings which help prop up the other conference teams (quality losses), the Pac seems to be benefiting from hocus pocus. I guess having the defending National Champs in your conference helps boost your overall conference RPI, or something…
Beavs are in a stretch where they should be able to pick up several more wins over the next few weeks, against lower level opponents.
5 games this week(2 on the road vs Nevada, home series with WSU
4 games the next week Gonzaga and then 3 game OK State series- All at home
The SEC and ACC are like, “We’ll give the Pac-12 the piddly sport of baseball, but we get to keep the real money-makers.”
Nope.
Former Beav, Andrew Checketts, has UCSB at #10. Wonder if he’ll land a Pac 12 job soon.
A few comments from this past weekend, football and baseball, in that order.
For the first time in two or three years the D-Line unit “looks the part.” I’m not saying they are going to be good, let alone great or dominant, but they actually have the physical heft one associates with D Linemen. I mean, even Nevada had bigger players in those slots and those opposing them last year.
Pierce, Jamar and Baylor looked sharp. Getting to the line quick, good vision, cuts, etc. That’s a nice trio and I’m thinking probably the best unit going forward . . .
Followed by the wide receivers. I think with Irish that Luton finally has a guy who can run under and catch those long bombs. Many here have properly criticized the decision to start Luton over McMaryon, the picks, etc., but it now also seems clear that OSU never really had a burner at wide out who could go get a long ball if it was slightly overthrown. Gebbia has a quicker release but did not particularly impress with velocity, accuracy, look-offs, etc. He’s more nimble than Luton, though Jake looked more agile than I remember heretofore. My guess is that Luton will be the starter.
Cordasco gave the impression that he’s the best lineman. He was plowing people around regularly.
I was impressed with Trent Bray’s enthusiasm and engagement. I think he has good rapport with his unit. Perhaps the best thing to note on the coaching front is that I didn’t see Riley on the sideline.
Choukair is setting the team up for more failure. I just don’t understand Smith’s allegiance to him.
Baseball: People are running out of superlatives to describe Adley and me too. The guy is uncanny. It seems as if that if you look back at how any particular game played out, Rutschman had the key hit, key play, etc. It can come early in a game, or it can occur late, and it doesn’t have to involve the specific margin of victory. Take Thursday’s inside the park homer. After that transpired the Beavs were still down two with only four innings left but that play put a charge into the Beavs dugout and in the stands and one had the feeling from that point that somehow the Beavs were going to pull it out.
Lastly, it was good to see Beavergopher again.
I think this pretty much sums up what I’ve seen from football so far this Spring as well.
3 position groups I’m worried about are OL first, then CB. We are pretty thin on OL experience this year. Hopefully player health is on our side, but it rarely is.
Also worried about CB.
Kicker will be bad again too.
Those 3 positions will hold back an otherwise pretty talented team. Just too bad they’re spread across all sides of the ball. Our offense has playmakers, but our QBs wont have much time to throw. Our D has playmakers, but teams will just air it out. And our special teams wont be able to convert more than half of their field goal attempts.
Curious how the CB transfer from Wazzu will impact the team, if at all this year. Seems like there is depth at CB but worried about experience. Need some good safety play and the D-line to get pressure so the CBs aren’t on an island for extended plays.
You’re asking too much for Oregon State defense…you’re asking them to actually play as a unit and get pass pressure on the opposing team. They only know how to get double teamed and let the WR’s get behind our DB’s and Safeties. We haven’t had a real defense since Richard Siegler and Nick Barnett were our LB’s and Dwan Edwards, DeLawrance Grant and LaDairis Jackson
Sawg and Drip. 2 terms OSU should never used in recruiting, yet here we are using both in the same tweet.
https://twitter.com/dyray22/status/1120384845706694656?s=19
Our new slogan: “Our Beavers are dripping!”
I think it’ll catch on.
Worst case, we get Brooke Burke as a spokesperson. “We got Poise.”
Mike Parker: “Jim, how about that 48 yard touchdown run by Jefferson on 3rd and 6!?!?”
Jim: “Drippin’’ Mike, drippin’. Jefferson started right but….”
Four OSU women receive all-American recognition:
Check out the vault score: 4 significant digits?!? WTH?
https://osubeavers.com/news/2019/4/20/womens-gymnastics-four-beavers-collect-all-america-honors.aspx
All five digits are significant. Thumb especially so.
Beavs and Nevada have been tied at 7 since the 6th. Headed to the 11th now.
And the Beavs drop another midweek game, 8-7 Nevada in 12.
Also drop a spot from 3rd to 4th in RPI. For RPI-sake it’s a good thing this was a road game.
We struck out 20 times and I believe the guy on Nevada tv said it was the most ever for OSU.
We scored 7 runs in 6 innings but scored zero the next 6 innings.
Good outing by Pearce to keep them scoreless for 5 innings but offense didn’t help him and he gets the loss after he made a bad throw to 3rd to allow the winning run to waltz home.
The big fail was in the top 11 when Harvey has a leadoff double, Casey HBP trying to bunt and then Adley, Ober and McGarry all strike out.
Looking at the replay, if Pearce would’ve been just a little faster off the mound he could of caught the bunt that was slightly popped up.
Not a surprising outcome with Malone and Philips still out and these midweek games just expose the thin pitching staff with Abel gone.
Why is Malone out?
tweaked something, supposedly it’s just precautionary, but just the sort of thing that leads to Tommy John surgery.
Hopefully not the dreaded Samsonite injury.
Can someone please tell the new bball recruit to stop talking to Nemec?? I want to learn about the guy but don’t want to click on that article.
Check the twitter feed from another article i retweeted recently. Nemec probably used it for his “research” anyway
NEMAC! Ha ha. Finally watched the spring game. Thought overall the team looked better. Saw Garcia disrupt a few plays. Thought Irish looked like the real deal. We have some good running backs…. Luton and Gebbia looked decent, wasn’t really wowed by either, but they were missing Hodgins and Bradford.
Beavs were up 4-0 in the 5th, but Nevada has come back to tie it in the 6th.
Pitching change brings Verburg in
Link to the Spring game?
shades of 2006 CWS North Carolina vs OSU, as Nevada runner on 3rd tries to steal home with 2 outs and 2 strikes. Batter swings away, and misses, for strike 3.
Still 4-4 going into 9th, Beavs up to bat.
Joe Casey with a 2 run BOMB
6-4 Beavs in the 9th, still batting
Cancel the remaining midweek games!
Wow, these mid-week games are a disaster for the Beavs this season. They are usually a way for good teams to pad their records.
wow Mulholland gave up 3 hits to blow the save in the 9th, then he gave up a first pitch bomb in the 10th to lose the game
Last two outings he pitched much longer than normal.
Smith says Luton improving because Gebbia is “pushing him.”
That’s a very diplomatic comment.
Unless it is at the top of a stairwell.

“The two games in Reno next week scare me. Nevada should have won both games here last year and they know it.”
Yeah. I hate being clairvoyant. Beavs better sweep Wazzu this weekend or they’ll be moving down in the national seed department.
They already might be. Not good losses

@KendallRogers what do you make of @BeaverBaseball dropping a pair in Reno? Time to panic in Corvallis?
The Beavs better get their shit together or Meggs will find a way to keep them out of the tourney again. Weren’t they 35-ish wins and third place the year they were denied a spot?
Clownzano giving a whole column to Brenda Tracy again. Tracy found out ex-Beav Jason Dandridge is going into some Cali high school athletic HoF and she ignited her social media machine to get the decision reversed. I get that he was probably a bad dude in college, but I don’t find this particularly newsworthy. Clownzano said “she is being forced to relive her situation again” (I’m paraphrasing).
I’m actually surprised they didn’t find a way to bring Heimlich up again in the story. When is Tracy going to go after Clown and his radio station for accepting sponsorship from a strip joint in the past?
Right after her choo choo impression?
This is getting rather old…I think she hasn’t learned that she needs to just stop googling her perpetrator(s) and following their lives due to hate. The more you lash out in anger, the more it tells me you haven’t moved on and hasn’t healed from the tragedy she went through.
This is all about drumming up business for her.
Yeah, just keeping her name in the headlines. Maybe she charges too much
Not just her perpetrators, but anybody or anything related to sexual assault at any college or high school.
Maybe I’m a bad fan, but I haven’t watched any beaver baseball games since the CWS. Decided to go out on top :-p
Maybe?
But one thing is sure, you missed some exciting baseball in the two series vs AZ teams. And you missed some sloppy baseball in that NV trip.
Good with the Bad, part of the fan experience.
Go Beavs!
Oh sure, it’s fine when Pat Casey takes off after winning a NC but scotty does it and nooooo. I see how it is!
Any ABs in the LA area? Looking for advice on which beach would be good for a family to visit, if I only have (less than) 1 day to explore?
Will be in Anaheim soon, so the closer the better to that area the better, because I have an evening flight to catch at SNA.
Is Newport Beach worth visiting?
Newport Beach is nice, but it’s a lot of rich assholes, too. So it depends if you can ignore them.
Corona Del Mar.
I kind of like Newport Beach for just a quick trip. I have business in Irvine three or four times a year.
My wife mentioned Balboa Peninsula as a place she’d like to check out. I can deal with rich assholes if it’s only for a day
Huntington, Newport or Laguna beach all have something to offer. If your kids are teens, they’d probably enjoy Huntington Beach more but if they are younger, then Laguna or Newport would be more enjoyable for you and your wife. This is a gross misrepresentation but Huntington is Seaside where Laguna and Newport are more Cannon Beach like.
Ha, that makes perfect sense though. kids are small and we’re just not fans of the Seaside version of the oregon coast, so sounds like Laguna/Newport are more up our alley. appreciate the info
Quick heads up, after you cross the bridge on your way to Newport Beach, there will be a Safeway on your right. Get you some supplies for the day and find parking anywhere near there as you’re two blocks from the beach. Super easy :-)
When I was stationed at El Toro I lived in Laguna Hills and we’d drive down to Laguna Beach all the time. It was a cool spot, pretty low key and friendly. If you drive up and down PCH there are some super rich snobby areas.
Huntington Beach Pier area is iconic. Nice beach and Main Street HB across the street.
A smaller version of this is Seal Beach pier… another Main Street connected to the beach.
I kind of like the Santa Monica pier, too.
A good night in that area is Misfit Bar (highly recommend the food and atmosphere) then a walk to the pier.
check out the lyrics to Surfin USA by the Beach Boys
Haha.
KILLER INSTINCT
Do both the Rueck coached gals and the Bailey version of Beavs Baseball lack the killer instinct?
Is that a significant missing ingredient for true, dynasty like, success?
Will Jonathan turn out to be a “silent assassin” type and build a team with that trait?
Wonder what y’all think?
I continue to be amazed about all the complaining about Bailey.
The team is 28-10-1 and a basically a consensus top 10 team after losing multiple high draft picks, the pitcher that was suppose to be the Friday night starter, and the PAC pitcher of the year.
It’s not like Pat Casey won every game.
I think Beaver baseball fans are starting to get a little bit entitled.
It’s the warts, people miss the warts.
Hey, we’re finally entitled to entitlement! Don’t ruin it! : )
this year’s baseball team seems to lose focus in mid-week games, and that I do attribute to Casey’s absence.
Could also be attributed to losing their Friday starter making their mid week starts worse too.
Nick Daschel at OLive has a Q&A with Scott Barnes about facilities improvements, the master plan, and just the current state of our football/basketball programs. I won’t link it though.
His answers are filled mostly with vagueness and generalities. The facilities master plan seems to be as mysterious and ongoing as the Mueller lnvestigation was/is.
One item he mentions is Gill will get another facelift soon, trying to fix up the plaza area in front of the building. Amd Reser will eventually maybe have some things and stuff done to it, possibly. Or not.
source: Oregonlive
Unfortunately, there’s little reason to have confidence in Barnes. He was brought to OSU – I think – because of his prior relationship with Andersen, and the perception that football is the money earner and the football coach has to be happy. But like Andersen, Barnes is punching above his weight class. He needs to go back to USU with Andersen. Perhaps the project should wait until there’s an effective AD with vision and the ability to build enthusiasm for the project, and such an AD should be recruited and hired soon.
Also, I note he’s talking about year round use of the building facility, but not other use sof the stadium seating and field?
Any public/private partnership needs to provide fairness to the public component.
Agree, Barnes was brought in to support Andersen and overpay coaching search/research studies to ultimately tell OSU they need to go the cheap route.
The east side would have been more conducive to mixed use construction. The west side feels pretty removed from the rest of campus. Would be nice to have restaurants downstairs for fans to attend prior to basketball/football games. In fact, a restaurant complex could work pretty well in the parking lot level of Reser, if they were allowed to serve alcohol and operate year round.
How often have you come to a game from out of town and not had time to visit a restaurant downtown because you would have to re-park closer to Reser to catch kickoff? (probably not very often, because nobody attends football games anymore)
Unfortunately, the AD candidate with vision and who actually pushed for results only lasted for less than 1 year before he left for Georgia Tech. I’d be curious to see how things are progressing at GT since Stansbury arrived there.
One interesting idea is that Reser could host political debates, particularly for governor candidates. It’d happen only every 4 years, but it’s guaranteed to be a sellout.
I like these outside the box ideas for Reser. Maybe a new thread for a Reser brainstorm extravaganza. Should be able to come up with some great/different ideas given the backgrounds of all the contributors here. I wonder if local schools ever use it for prom or anything like that.
Yikes. Talk about a dude on cruise-control watching those $40,000 direct deposits land in his bank account every month. It’s the same regurgitated generalities about facilities “master-plan” we’ve heard for two years now. The Reser west side is a boondoggle on many fronts, but the fact we’ve got an AD that still doesn’t have any real vision for it or how to get there just totally sucks. Maybe a health company or a restaurant or something”. Just embarrassing.
Seems pretty likely the “maybe a healthcare company” is referencing Jason Young’s Chiro clinic, Body of Health. He came to Barnes defense today when there was an online discussion about the lack of vision with Reser. And no offense to him, because I admire his passion for all things OSU, but a chiropractor ain’t paying the bills to make any sort of impact on remodeling Reser. But speaking in general terms like “health care company” will have people thinking Barnes is cooking up a deal with some major national health plan. Seems pretty doubtful.
Don’t forget maybe “meeting space for the university and potentially the community.” Wow.
Some complicated stuff there.
They tried the restaurant years ago. Mcmenamins was trying to move in but was denied due to serving alcohol on campus during non game days. They would have opened where the bookstore is now.
I have become a Pac-12 Network victim.
I’m tired of getting raped every month by Spectrum cable and tired of even paying more for it so I can have the Pac-12 network. So I want to cut my cable service, just keep my internet service and do TV through YouTube TV. But guess what, Pac-12 isn’t available through YouTube, or Hulu. Your ONLY chose for Pac-12 outside of cable is to use Sling which has a very stupid set-up, channel acces split in two different sections (orange and blue) or you can pay more money to have both sections…. and then you can pay more money to add the sports package with the pac-12 network (must have Blue section). SEC network is everywhere. What the $%&^^%%$!
In the event there is actually a Beaver sports game on the real Pac-12 channel (not Pac-12 Plus), find a friend/relative with a Pac-12 cable login and use it for those rare occasions. YouTube TV is awesome although price just went up to $50 a month. Still way cheaper than cable and can have a tv anywhere within wireless range.
For football and basketball, I can usually find a stream via reddit. Found some pretty reliable streams there.
I’ve been watching PAC12 for a few years now on DISH with no problems. When our game isn’t scheduled I cast the live stream (when one is available, which is quite often) to the big TV.
the problem with Dish and Pac-12 networks is we no longer get the feeds to Pac-12 Oregon, etc. Just the main Pac-12 network. If you try to watch on a live stream on the Pac-12 now app it won’t let you watch anything other than the main Pac-12 channel. Pac-12 Oregon, Washington, Bay area, LA, Arizona or mountain are not available to us but they initially were. I had this fight with dish 2 years ago and got no explanation whatsoever. Idk what happened or what changed.
Went thru this a couple weeks ago. Wanted to watch the Beavs baseball game on Friday night but was stuck watching USC/UCLA because that’s what was on the Pac-12 national channel. Even though the Beavs game was being broadcast on Pac-12 networks Oregon channel. Such BS
I’ve been fairly pleased with Sling TV. The stream works well 99% of the time.
When you’re slinging, your stream better work….
I’ve been able to get most of the live streams through the university sites — watched the Nevada games on their stream.
If I can’t get it on the main feed I go to the Pac12 streaming site – https://pac-12.com/live – and watch on my computer.
You’re right, though, the early promise of all the Dish channels was good for a while….then they did the bait and switch!
https://twitter.com/LaredosTecos/status/1121639633182269442 Luke got his first win
Cue up Brenda.
Retro unis, good luck.
A universal truth?
Nice work Luke. 21 Ks in 21.1 innings so far. He’s 2nd on the team in innings pitched. Except for giving up too many bombs (5 total) he’s doing well. A 3 run jack yesterday accounted for all the runs he gave up in that game.
If any MLB club wants to sign him, they have to pay 15% of all guaranteed money and 35% of all signing bonus to the Tecos club.
The question I have is how good of baseball is the Mexican League?
I’ve heard it’s AAA equivalent, so decent baseball.
i wonder if Tracy will try to have Luke tossed out of the Mexican league. She’s great at resurrecting the past for her own benefit. It seems to me she would be better served to just move forward and let go of the past.
I know there’s not much interest in the NFL draft, but I read that #1 pick Murray signed with the same agent that works for AZ coach Klingsbury….wow, what a surprise he goes #1. I don’t think its going to work out for them….more becaue of Klingsbury than Murray.
Any Beavs going to be drafted? None come to mine. Wait until next year for Pierce?
The way the media is championing Luton you would thing he will be the #1 draft pick next year LOL.
I haven’t heard of a single Beav with NFL interest.
While I don’t blame the guy, looking at Chad Johnson Jr.’s Twitter, you’d think he is all about the attention with the recruiting game. I see he is injured and didn’t make the visit for the Spring Game. He is all over the ASU WR going to the Patriots. I think he is the playing OSU fans. I think Smith knows it and that is why they haven’t given him a lot of attention.
We have a ton of depth at WR… I bet he would throw a fit if he wasn’t a starter year one… like everyone else has said, he doesn’t fit this teams personality anyway… team chemistry is important and I can’t see JS risking that for one wide receiver
Agree. Waste of time. No need for social media stars
Imagine if twitter/instagram/snapchat, were things when his dad was playing here.
The fact that no PAC 12 picks were made in top half of first round is telling. PAC isnt hanging WRT recruiting nationally or coaching up top level talent.
Are there any Beavs with NFL interest in any regard (practice squad, women’s league, tranny league, etc)?
Series with Cougs starts in a few minutes, streamed by The School.
Jake Dukart gets the start at 3b, batting .262, one of only two (along with Joe Casey) LH batters in the lineup.
Trap Series??….Coug pitcher in 24 innings has an ERA of nearly 13!
https://pac-12.com/live/oregon-state-university
UPDATE: Both Casey and Dukart have doubled, Dukart plating 2 RBI’s. B3, 6-1 good guys still at bat.
Adley with a monster grand slam to go up 15-4, bottom of 7. B7, 1 out and bases loaded again. Maybe Angry’s reversing psychology is working on Dukart?
Joey Mundt made his conf debut and K’d the first batter he saw. Big kid can bring it.
He said we are dorks and hicks that don’t have good players in anything relevant? We are not dorks and pretty sure our baseball team is competitive regularly and sends players to the Mexican league that can actually WIN GAMES!!! Speaks for itself IYAM. Who’s the dork now?
Your troll game is weak. And who has Oregon sent to the major leagues? No one? Cool. Maybe they’ll win another track title or something, probably not but whatever. track and field national championships are on the same level as OSUs racketball national championships.
No one likes you; not even your parents.
Nice job Zona. Beat Stanford last night.
McMaryion’s #1 WR just got drafted. There was some debate with draft gurus that McM might go late. He’s running out of time. I think a team invites him to camp if he doesn’t get selected.
Really weird that none of our players who didn’t receive any other p5 offers and got blasted / physically dominated on the field repeatedly for 4-7 seasons didn’t develop into viable NFL prospects
Not weird at all, you would know that if you were a beaver fan. By the way what year did you graduate from UO? Or are you just another walmart duck fan?
He’s clearly joking when he says “weird”…
Any thoughts on coaching strategy in our just completed 16 inning win??
Should have saved a few runs from yesterday.
Dang, why didn’t they think of that! :-)
George Horton, whose team just lost it’s fifth in a row, takes a swing at Scott Barnes and anyone else who voted “NO” on the recent third coach for baseball and softball vote, saying:
More on Barnes stance, feeling blindsided by Kendall Rogers, and what he (Barnes) plans to do about it in this story by Eggers:
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/426719-333520-osus-barnes-explains-his-vote-on-coaching-proposal-
Barnes comes off as talking out of both sides of his punchable mouth. Hat tip to angry for calling this guy out as soon as he was hired.
Only reason he is saying he’ll propose new legislation is to cover his ass and his hand is forced. He was embarrassed he got exposed, even though he shouldn’t be allowed to operate as the AD of a public University while in an anonymous vacuum. Guarantee this wasnt in his plans, otherwise he wouldnt have to speak about it in vague amd general terms(just like how he talks about the Reser plans)
In reality, no new legislation can be voted on for 3 years, so it’s all lip service. He’ll be gone by then.
Every time he speaks, I only hear and see bullshit spewing.
Exactly the way I see it. The Eggers piece was posted here so those who avoid the big(little?)O could be more fully informed beyond the info already pasted here.
BTW I kinda like your approach of pasting stuff from the o so that one click can eliminate many.
Eggers articles get very few comments, I notice this one has a comment from “Tony Hotdog”, who simply calls BS. Good on ya, Tony!
McMaryion went undrafted?
Yes.
Sorry kid… you went all in on that one. Backtrack or start a new thread in 3, 2, 1…
All in on what?
Angry’s about to become a CFL fan
Actually, that’s not a bad idea — he’s well suited for the Canadian game and don’t forget that’s the track that got Warren Moon and Doug Flutie in the NFL, if I remember correctly.
Not really true of Flutie, USFL for a year, NFL for 4, then CFL, before returning to the NFL
I’d bet most of the undrafted guys go to the XFL over the CFL.
That said, going undrafted doesn’t mean he won’t be in the NFL
Yeah, he Tweeted he’s going to get a shot in the NFL, so scouts must be in touch.
So was the drafted player with any OSU ties, Xavier Crawford?
2 years in a row with not a single player drafted. Nice work GA.
I’ll mail you a towel for the egg.
Mitch Verburg holding his elbow after his last pitch last night?
Uh oh.
Here we go again?
Bailey pre-game today, MRI and find out more…….
Can anyone help out this old beav? I was on assignment for the oldbeavette yesterday and only listened to a few innings.
There is a post on the team twitter with a GIF captioned “Wade Meckler, nerves of steel in the dugout”. Was taken in either the 11th or 13th inning and went up around 6pm.
It involves a Beav pop foul to the left side, what does it mean??
https://twitter.com/@BeaverBaseball
I thought he was going to hold his ground and take one in the back so as not to make it easy for the Wazzu 3rd baseman
Thumbs up to the lady yesterday with the sign that said “I’m the only Cougar Beaver baseball fears.”
Lineup is posted, Claunch catching and Adley at first.
Adley and Jake Harvey the only guys with BA over .284
Bailey should quit f’ing around with the lineups and leave Mendazona at third.
Great play by Armstrong!
Nice 10-pitch inning for Gambrell and now he’s thrown 70 through 4.
0-0 on to the bottom of the 4th
Hits by Malone and Claunch, and a sac fly by Dukart and the Beavs are up 1-0 after 4
McMaryion has been picked up by the Raiders
Jake Browning from uw also went undrafted, figured he was more highly thought of
That is amazing after his first couple years.
That is surprising. His arm strength was apparently a concern. I bet he sticks on a roster somewhere and makes it several years in the NFL.
Browning has signed what is believed to be the richest deal ever for an undrafted free agent. The Vikings guaranteed him $140,000, and there is optimism in Browning’s camp about his chances to make the Minnesota roster.
Typically, the average undrafted free agent signs for $5,000 to $10,000.
Long criticized for his lack of arm strength, Browning this winter turned to throwing specialists in Southern California to overhaul his mechanics. The makeover worked wonders, as he’s added noticeable zip to his fastball while able to thrown an extra 10 yards downfield.
“I always heard about arm strength stuff — over and over and over and over,” …And finally, I went down to California and kind of was given the answers: ‘OK, here’s how you get more arm strength.’ That’s an indescribable feeling.
“Everyone tells you you have some issue for four years (but) no one really tells you how to fix it. Then to have a guy tell you how to fix it? It’s pretty nice.”
Of course someone picked him up. NFL talent.
I bet ReverendBeav feels pretty stupid right now. Lol.
Lol. If he can secure a practice squad spot, I will concede.
Gambrell still has a shutout through 5 on 85 pitches
Another great inning by Gambrell. Shutting out Wazzu through 6 on 95 pitches.
Claunch with his 2nd double of the day and Andy Armstrong drives him home with a single.
2-0 Beavs in the 6th.
Our two runs have been driven in by our #7 and #8 hitters.
A 4th straight perfect inning for Gambrell and he’s shutting them out through 7 on 106 pitches
Keep stranding runners.
Another perfect inning by Gambrell now shutting them out through 8
Grant’s ERA has dropped from 3.50 to 2.98 over the course of this game
Remember when Jack said McM was a quitter?
Let’s see, hang out and play for GA and a basement dwelling football team that had zero appreciation for him, or go play for Tedford, a team that believed in his ability, and make the NFL.
Reminds me, has Jack himself quit ab?
He’s in the looney bin
He commented not long ago, maybe one of the last 2 threads.
Only 2 guys with OSU ties, I’ve heard in reference to getting picked up by NFL teams so far, have been McMaryion and Crawfors. Both guys who left OSU during or shortly after the GA tenure.
McM won’t “make” the NFL until he earns a spot on the 53 man roster.
I think he’ll do just that; no better coach for a QB to play for than Gruden.
Chucky
Invited to a Raider’s mini-camp, right? Not officially signed to anything as far as I can tell.
Hes not making an NFL roster. His best bet is the CFL, i think he would do pretty good up there.
Jack’s off a lot of the time.
Who? Gruden?
Gambrell leaves to applause after 8.3 two hit innings, 12 K’s and 2 bb. 124 pitches.
Wazzu did not score in any of the last 17 innings of the series
We need better clutch hitting. Should have more than 2 runs when we get 9 hits.
Should have more than 2 runs when we get 9 hits.
For example, ucks have 12 runs on 8 hits through 7 innings. But… FIVE HBP, FIVE bb, and 1 Cal error.
Beavs sweep! 2-0
Chamberlain gets his second save.
Speaking of sweeps, Beav Gals go for CW sweep today at 5 on PAC12
BTW, they play with yellow balls. Cue BG
UPDATE: Beavers sweep, down ucks 12-8
Sounds like jaundice.
Pat Bailey said Mitchell Verburg will have an MRI tomorrow on his right elbow.
Here is Lundeberg quoting Bailey on Verburg’s situation:
More lame excuses for Barnes, from the guy the GT kept when they let Lundeberg go.
https://www.gazettetimes.com/print-specific/column/commentary-thought-process-behind-no-vote-a-good-one/article_e8736a0c-3dc9-5b43-a396-28b59326d8e8.html
Lundeberg agreed with Barnes decision to vote no. I trust Lundebergs views. Barnes still needs to go though.
Nice to see Beav softball sweep the Quacks for the first time in 13 years and on the road no less. Softball is owner of a bizarre stat though….32 games played and ZERO home wins so far.
That will need to change next weekend (at home against Utah) if they hope to get in the tournament. Win the series or better yet sweep and I think they make it once again, which would be the fourth year in a row. Nice achievement in a tough league.
The freshman home run hitter from last season is now playing here at Minnesota. A female Beavergopher! Anybody know why she left? She has been very good this season.
Baseball RPI took a beating last week dropping from #3 to #10
Probably need to win 10 out of last 14 to lock up a national seed
It’s only a brief dip due to playing wsu. Rest of teams left are high rpi teams except usc but they aren’t near as bad as wsu.
Win the series vs Stanford and they’ll be top 8 seed even if the rpi is outside the top 8.
Any angrybeavs going to apply to be on the Beav athletic council?
The Fan Experience Committee? I did, will hear if I am selected sometime this Spring.
Yes. Good luck.
The Fan Experience Committee? I did, will hear if I am selected sometime this Spring.
Warren Washington is leaving the hoops team.
Tinkle has had so much turnover with his
recruits lately.
He is a huge loss. WTF is going on?
Could he be leaving because he knows lil’ tinks is not coming back?
Not surprising. Was thinking either him or Hollins would be the first to go. 3 out of class of 5 gone, ouch. Well only 2 more years of this and hopefully the admn will bite the bullet on the 3rd year in order to let him go.
I’m surprised given how much playing time he got last year and with Big G gone I figured he’d play a lot next year. This doesn’t look good at all for Tinkle. I know Dastrup will be there next year but there is plenty of playing time available. Something is not right.
https://twitter.com/nickdaschel/status/1122992758568902657?s=19
Daschel doesn’t think it’s an OSU issue but he’s wrong. There’s something going on here and we probably won’t find out until he’s gone.
I like how Daschel can’t even get the schools right. He says Oregon instead of Oregon St.
He meant Oregon. They’ve had players leave as well.
He covers the Beavers?
He’s the OSU beat writer for the Oregonian
Is Washington thinking the transfer Dastrup is going to get the playing time and he will end up in the same boat as last year. I do think that Tinkle has no clue about rotations and it wears on the bench, when one game someone gets 15 minutes and the next game zero.
Is this why Ethan opted for the draft?
I, who can hardly tell man-to-man from 1-3-1, dare to comment that the players don’t appear to improve very much.
So many transfers out of the program. I think this sheds a light on Tinkle’s coaching tactics. By outward appearance, it seems that people simply just don’t enjoy playing there. Certainly more playing time was coming, but if the fun and joy of basketball have gone away then staying is not worth it. While coaching turnover sucks, this may be needed.
Maybe having a short leash on every player outside of the sons has gotten on some of the players’ nerves.
Wow, I remember being so hopeful and excited about the trajectory of the program the first two years.
This @ nicebeaver is definitely a problem. Tres is good but I’d be curious how the culture changes when all are treated somewhat equally. You see Wayne lay into Stevie and Ethan but tres can have some of the worst turnovers and have no consequences in game moments. I’m guessing we won’t have a bye in the conference tourney for awhile.
Does anyone have any stats on how the number of OSU MBB transfers the last 2-3 years compares to other D-1 schools? Seems like it’s higher than others but I’m not sure I’ve seen any numbers that support or discredit that theory.
Perfect subject for a new thread.
Some foosball transfer news as UW is apparently losing two highly rated QBs, Yankoff and Sirmon. Wonder if Smith has a good relationship with either?
https://247sports.com/Article/Washington-Football-Colson-Yankoff-Jacob-Sirmon-enter-transfer-portal-131654954/Amp/?__twitter_impression=true
We recruited Yankoff.
We recruited both, and so did Smith.
So predictable. Everybody called this when they had Browning coming back for his senior year, plus a 5* transfer in Eason and 3 other 4* guys. Too bad these dummies wasted a year of their eligibility to figure this out.
“Yankoff for the Beavers” ……….I can hear Mike Parker confusing the undergrads.
“ Yankoff tossed that one for six and the Beavers are drippin’’ Jim!”
But Yankoff actually had a little interest, from memory.
They probably thought they could beat out Browning and Eason. Egos, etc. Or they’re just dumb.
Yankoff was actually a duck verbal commit for a short period. I think Sirmon and Yankoff both had mild interest in OSU, except McGiven…
Sirmon is a UW legacy kid I believe, so he probably felt pressure to go there.
Of the 2 guys, Sirmon is the only one who ever followed back the beavrecruiting acct and actually still does to this day. Doesnt mean anything really, but the fact he followed back shows he had the slightest bit of interest.
Surprised this thread still loads ok. Anybody know what the record number of comments is before AB crashes?
I think it’s around here.
Without Jack going off on 30-40 self talking Trump/ Bush diatribes. So this would be a record by default.
Whatever happened to Jack, anyway? It’s so quiet..l
Whatever happened to Jack, anyway?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7ArZ7VD-QQ
He went on a couples retreat with Alpha and they both disappeared.
I wish…. Need some R&R
The remaining schedule with RPI’s
Gonzaga (57)
Oklahoma St (24)
Oregon (43)
Portland (142)
Stanford (16)
USC (90)
according to Boyd’s World, our remaining schedule has the highest RPI rank of all of the top 10 RPI teams.
In 10th place, we actually have a larger margin for error than the teams in 9th, 8th, 7th, and 6th place, each of whom would fall out of the top 8 with more than 2 losses the rest of the way.
Interestingly Georgia Tech, who is currently 8th in RPI, has no way to stay in the Top 8 even if they won all their remaining games.
Beavs don’t have a shot at either guy transferring from uw. One bc they are looking to play. They’ll basically be where they left, at the bottom of the depth chart.
More likely to see them transfer to a small conference school and play immediately there.
I don’t totally agree here, although I still don’t think we end up with either.
Both would have to sit a year. After that they would likely be #1 or #2 on our depth chart with Gebbia being the main competition. I don’t see Colletto, Willard or Moore beating them out for the 2-deep.
At UW they were already #4 and #5, which was only going to get worse the next 2 years as UW already has 2 more highly regarded QB commits for 2020 and 2021.
Finding a team where they would instantly make the 2-deep should be their goal, with a good shot of taking over starter duties after a year in the system.
Added to that argument is they know coach Smith and if they want to stay fairly local, Oregon State fits that piece as well. Who knows what recruits are looking for these days though..maybe we need to ditch orange and black and go with some neons and unicorn stickers or something. (joking)
Thread is getting slow! I was hoping to hit 600 for the first time ever.

Baseball game tonight is pretty much a must win for seeding purposes.
To make a run to Omaha, they’ll need to be at home for supers.
AB got saddled with some renewal fees today. If anyone’s been thinking about a donation, the contact/donate button is on the right side. Thanks in advance.
They must be trying to stop us before we break this thread
Jet Pack continues to randomly prevent posting; imagine we’d have hit the big 600 if not for that impediment!
Baseball vs Gonzaga begins shortly, streamed by The School.
As Bill said, pretty much a must win. Zags start 4 guys batting over .300, Beavs?……..2.
Zags pitcher ERA 5.67, Dukart, now at .231 gets the start at 3b while Mendazona sits.
https://pac-12.com/live/pac-12-plus
Who started? Turn it on and down in the 5th with Burns on in relief.
Pearce started and did very well for 3 innings. Faced the minimum the first time through the lineup.
This is bad baseball…..
Yikes….be lucky to get to the Super regional with this emaciated pitching staff.
A loss tonight and the Beavs gonna need at least 2 wins vs Stanford, might not have been necessary otherwise.
Casey must be going nuts.
Tweedy Bird coming in………………..walk or HR?
Walk and a GO
NOW, ONLY 10 COMMENTS NEEDED TO REACH 600, let’s do this!!!
My cat is missing, if you see him give me a call.
Can you describe the feline, in between 2 and 6 comments?
He likes shitting in freshly planted flower pots. Keep an eye out.
Is that a unique trait for housecats?
Who doesn’t like doing that?
Hes fluffy white with a little tan. Hes a rescue x2, adopted from the lady who rescued him. She passed, and now i own a cat named Liberace, no shit thats his name.
Probably the friendliest cat ive ever known.
Ive known like 4 cats, so my sample size is kind of small. Im more of a dog person.
How is he on the piano?
Simply marvelous.
I have an all black cat named Wednesday, she looks like a Halloween decoration. She wasn’t supposed to be my pet but she’s a total fuckface and only really likes me.
So I guess I have a cat.
Two guys likin’ pussy’s, who’d a thunk it!
Oh, we have hit 600……….c’mon angry get that new post up!
Fuchs put in a hard spot, K’s to end it. 6-3
Bailey fucked Fuchs.
I know this isn’t cat related but I don’t understand the pinch hitter with bases loaded.
Thank you…
Especially hard to comprehend when the PH has seen such little action and is hitting in the .170 area.
Especially when Ober was due up. Bailey overthinking things.
And let’s go for 700!
PB pinch hits for our second best batter? A guy hitting a buck 74. I think this ^ black cat has brought
bad luck to da Beavs!
Don’t blame the cat; bad mid-week luck is a trend.
Only one regular season mid-week game left; May 14 vs Portland…right before the BIG series with Stanford.
Black cat = bad luck
Said cat is named Wednesday ….We lose on Wednesdays and Tuesdays
Settled science……..that pussy is the cause of all our problems.
Score one for the Schizophreniac Rodent!
My mind is changed, I think, or not, kinda.
600+ posts… You need some shwag Angry!
From a Eugene TV sports reporter’s twitter:
Do they have to play mid-week games?
Hey just got home. 600!
Sweet. Let’s try for 700.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuEdU_lrtZk
Beavs appear to be all-in on 2020 QB Chubba Purdy(younger brother of Brock from the 2018 class, who we should have pursued harder)
https://247sports.com/player/chubba-purdy-46076928/
I wonder how many women told him he has a purdy chubby.
How do you think he earned the nickname? ;-)

Thanks, Jack
Should we worry about Jack? I think he’s in his 70’s, not that that is old but maybe he’s having medical issues (besides his normal stuff).
No worries. I found him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sByVwTHYkCE
The tantrum yes, but the methodical cleanup?
BTW, are we really trying for 700???
Not to be outdone by the Beavs, the duck bball team had 2 players transfer yesterday. It happens to everybod, I guess
Are we getting into an era of the “grass is greener” at other places and transfers will become common?
I don’t follow the Ducks at all. Were these players that were expected to ride the pine or expected to contribute. Cause the Beavers needed a lot of minutes from Warren Washington next season. Losing guys that aren’t ever going to play is not really a bad thing as it frees up scholarships. Losing guys that were counted on is very bad.
Big thanks to all who sent a donations. Only got a few, but they covered the incurred costs from yesterday.
If anyone wants to still donate, it’s on the right under the contact button. Any proceeds from here out will be split with beavrecruiting.
Projections for national seeds has the beavs dropping near the edge and rightly so.
They need to win every series now. Otherwise they’ll need help.
Before anybody else asks, I dont know who the 5* visitor is(that mama Machado is teasing twitter) I dont have access to their Lodge.
If I were to guess, the most likely candidate is former UCLA Bruin Mique Juarez. If that’s the case, the 5* label should be loosely applied. He was forced into medical retirement by Chip Kelly after suffering multiple concussions, but he still wants to play. His play so far in his career doesn’t scream 5* athlete, but there’s always a slim chance he bounces back.
If anybody has lodge access, let me know if i’m wrong.
Sasha Goforth, women’s B-ball
Goforth and multiply………..and don’t miss layups.
Another likely candidate(maybe more likely, now that i think about it) is Marjon Beauchamp, class of 2020 MBB player we just offered this week.
Confirmed with a legitamite source Beauchamp will visit this spring. If Tonks could land him it would be huge for the beavs.
Ken Austin has past away. Only a truest beaver fans knows who he is.
R.I.P Benny.
Very sad news. Was just at A-DEC Tuesday for a tour. Him and his wife are/were something special. The culture they established there and the community service they do for others is remarkable. Privately owned and very friendly people top to bottom. Sad day for sure.
This is a big loss for Oregon State. Had the pleasure of talking to him several times at the Chicago Midwinter Dental meeting over the years. My rep knew I was an OSU grad and made the first contact by saying,”you want to meet Benny the Beaver.” Truly a great guy and his company, A-dec, is the dental equivalent of Mercedes with fantastic products that last forever. Great design and engineering. A sad day for OSU. I wish they still used his costume.
I grew up with his grand kids in newberg. The whole extended family was great, super nice people.
A generous soul and a Newberg institution, he quietly supported many causes.
FUN FACT (?):
This thread, highlighting injuries to pitchers, started over two weeks before Mitch Verburg went down.
Gotta wonder if Verburg will return to the mound this season, seems like any good news would be available by now.
This thread still going has to be a sign that he is going to return.
No new thread until Verburg is back!!!!
No new thread until Barnes is fired.
That will break the internet.
New thread up, but we should still try to hit 700 here!
