This is just a hunch, but since Barnes seems completely insufferable as a human being, my gut tells me a classy guy like Casey did not want to work for him.
Can anyone confirm if Casey leaving had something to do with Barnes?
Also, the rumor Casey is coming back at some point somewhat confirms this. He might want to return once Barnes is gone. Or he might want to replace Barnes as the AD.
I could be totally wrong and the story that he doesn’t want to coach his kid is the truth. Where’s angry at Angry when we need him? Fill us in. If anyone has knowledge let us know, or write me an email explaining if there’s any link there.
The bottom line, though, is that Barnes must go. Ed Ray must go, Barnes must go, and we need some competent people in these key positions.
Midweek games suck!!!! Time for the weekend!!!
I agree, working for Barnes would be enough to make anybody want to find employment elsewhere, but Casey still works for Barnes as Senior Assistant Athletic Director. He’s SAAD (his words, not mine)
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/414895-316148-retired-osu-coach-pat-casey-settles-into-new-assistant-role
Is this the article from December ’18? I wonder if his thoughts have changed almost five months later? Season in progress.
That’s true. I wonder how much he sees him now vs as a coach. Anyone know?
It supports the idea he wants to be AD (this job seems close to that) and might know Barnes is on the way out?
From my private messages:
PC was furious when SB took money that he raised / got donated to baseball for football. Same shit happened with track and other sports. Also SB pissed off the company that donated the truck for football equipment. No cool free transport anymore. SB does not know how to treat ppl, he is just another admin suit marketing master plan joke. Next.
You forgot to put “overpaid” in there, too.
Did you all see the Caleb Smith news?

Oh shit, that really sucks. Shattered lower back and fused vertebrae is no joke.
Just terrible
OT – UO recruiting “#1 QB in 2020 class” expected to announce sunday:
“DJ Uiagalelei….He and his brother are sneakerheads, with at least 80 pairs of shoes between them….He’s the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the 2020 class and is verbally committing to either Oregon or Clemson on Sunday.
Uiagalelei’s arm strength spans sports. He’s got a screaming 95 mph fastball that could land him in the first round of the MLB draft. Greg Biggins, a longtime recruiting reporter on the West Coast who now works for 247Sports, calls his arm “generational” and the strongest he’s seen from a high school player since JaMarcus Russell. His arm is so powerful it overshadows the other skills that have produced this stat line as a two-year starter: 68% completion mark, more than 6,000 yards passing, 77 touchdowns and just nine interceptions. Uiagalelei is incredibly accurate and athletic out of the pocket for his size. Biggins compares him to Ben Roethlisberger with Cam Newton athleticism.”
https://www.si.com/college-football/2019/05/03/dj-uiagalelei-recruiting-quarterback-rankings-clemson-oregon
Wow, the power of sneakers? If you’re the #1 QB in the country, there’s much better options than Eugene. That’s not sour grapes, that’s just a fact. Cristobal isn’t established yet, though I think his strategy of building from the lines is a good one.
They got the “#1 DE” this cycle, now in the running for #1 QB. I guess marketing mind share (Nike, ESPN love) are really more effective than I appreciate.
I don’t get how the Quacks attract this level of talent still? It was understandable during the Chip Kelly area with his innovations on offense, but it’s been inconsistent since and even a bit chaotic of a program. I mean Cristobal was fired by a non-power five program 20 games under .500 for godsakes.
Certainly makes you wonder if there’s some funny business going on.
Ducks have a lot of stuff that young athletes crave. One of them being Nike who can tell these kids they’re going to get a major endorsement contract when they go pro.
An endorsement contract or, as in the case of at least WBB a JOB!
Oh, and there is that silly “throne” they photograph recruits sitting on.
He chose Clemson. That surprises me only in the playing time aspect because Clemson seems to be set at QB for the next two years, while Oregon should have a wide open qb race in 2021.
But from a PROGRAM perspective, and head coaching perspective, it makes a lot of sense.
When Casey stepped down he said he was exhausted and couldn’t be sure he could give coaching the kind of effort he demands of his players. He is pretty much a straight shooter, gotta wonder what there was about the ’18 (and ’17) season(s) which wore him out to such a degree.
I discount anything related to age, seems to me the way Pres Ray and AD Barnes responded to the Luke Heimlich matter is a more likely factor. We’ll likely never know the behind closed doors discussions on that.
Pat was very clear, “I believe in Luke” and other comments on how Luke was more than a solid citizen while at OSU. Barnes and Ray? Not so much.
BTW, Luke Heimlich (1-2, 5.06 ERA) was coming off his first professional victory and was scheduled to start Thursday. However, the Tecolotes made a late change and pulled Gerardo Gutierrez out of the bullpen for his first start of the season.
From the Larado paper:
https://www.lmtonline.com/sports/article/Tecos-edged-in-rubber-match-13815840.php
I read something where the Mexican League is considered AAA baseball and recognized as such by MLB, so it’s a bit of a stretch for Heimlich to go from college (with a year out of baseball) to that level of play. Understanding of course, that was his only option.
Not quite AAA but definitely not rookie ball or high A ball
Where he would be playing. had he been drafted. Probably closer to AA from a talent perspective and the biggest thing is he is facing more professional hitters
Than he should be at this stage of his development.
I got a chance to speak with Casey when the team was in Surprise this year. He was standing by himself way beyond the centerfield wall. He had a hoodie on and clearly didn’t want to be recognized. In speaking with him it was obvious he loved his players and it pained him not to be coaching them. He beamed about seeing Madrigal play a spring training game earlier that day but also said he felt he was letting his guys down. My gut told me he wants to coach again. I just don’t know how he feels about taking the job away from Bailey and demoting Jenkins to a volunteer role again.
Good point about Jenkins. Imagine Barnes’ vote on the third coach thing didn’t help the relationship with Casey, even though it would not have made a difference in the outcome.
Parker doing his best Jon Warren impression on radio now. Repeatedly saying Cowboys got 2 doubles in the 7th. Not the first misspeaking from him lately. Seems to have lost some edge about the time his daughter started the salary rant.
On to the b7 with Cowboys up 1-0; seventh inning has often been good to the Beavs, lets see now.
Malone strikes out with runners on 1st and 2nd to end the inning. I’ve only been watching since the 5th and have just about had my fill of crappy at bats by the Beavs.
Yeah, Parker by himself is the worst. He babbles and babbles to fill space.
Actually, I kinda like Parker way of filling space. His memory often amazes me.
My issue lately is the number of misstatements he has been making, I really have noticed it over the last couple weeks.
But, speaking of being alone, does anyone know the whole story on Jim Wilson? Does he have an arrangement with NBC Sports which keeps him off of these Beav broadcasts? Hope he returns for football.
He needs a partner in my opinion. Too bad Jim’s not around. I had mentioned in a previous thread that I swear Jim was doing a Portland Pilots baseball game for some network called “Stadium” a couple of weeks back.
Malone has been the biggest disappointment this year. He seemed set to have a breakout season. Not so much.
https://mobile.twitter.com/LaredosTecos/status/1124496481128333312 Link to watch Luke pitch
….and this team can’t buy a hit. Need uncle Phil’s influence now!!!
Or……maybe Casey’s influence?
Look at how many players have regressed this season:
Claunch
Zak Taylor
Tyler Malone
Preston Jones
Andy Armstrong
No way that happens with Casey still in charge.
Yeah, you are right. Every Casey team went undefeated and won the national title, Gonna be sad to see that 20 straight national title streak come to an end. Oh wait….Casey had teams miss the tournament? Casey even had a team that lost a regional as a #1 seed? That can’t be right? How is that even possible?
Huh? I said nothing about wins and losses, titles or the tournament so your response doesn’t make much sense. If you can provide an example of another season where so many upperclassmen regressed offensively, please do.
Non-sequitur comment
I like cheese.
I’m not going to waste my time searching stats. It is hardly a surprise when a line up loses the majority of its stars that the non stars are going to struggle. They had protection in past years, that protection is now mostly in the minor leagues.
A regression for most should have been your expectation.
At the end of the day I just think all these “Casey wouldn’t have allowed this” nonsense is just that. Nonsense. No one knows what these guys would be doing if Casey were still coach. Complain all you want but don’t make definitive statements like “No way that happens with Casey still in charge” because you have no idea what would have happened if Casey were still in charge.
I didn’t ask for stats. I asked for an example which you can’t provide but yet you’ve appointed yourself the authority on “definitive statements” on a fan board. Quit being a jack ass.
You do realize “Casey would never let this happen” is a definitive statement right?
Kettle, you’re black….
This board is slowly turning Pat Casey into an infallible dirty.
I want him back too but we have no clue rather the team would be playing better or worse with him in the dugout.
If that is a “definitive statement” then so be it
I wasn’t backing away from making a statement. I was calling you out for telling me not to make a statement.
I assume you meant infallible deity. He’s not infallible but definitely a deity.
I think he meant inflatable dolly.
You’re both pushing your IMHOs (which you’re entitled to) but neither of you could prove the other wrong (or right). On reflection, would you agree?
I sort of agree except I never claimed I could prove anything. That was my entire point. No one has any clue what this team would be like with Pat Casey.
Disagree. My argument isn’t based on opinion its based on 20 years of data while Casey was leading the team. You won’t find another season with upperclassmen regressing like this season. Here’s the data, prove me wrong.
https://osubeavers.com/sports/2012/7/16/208330989.aspx
You do understand you are asking people to prove a negative right?
Which is impossible.
But whatever. I don’t care enough to keep going on this. If you want to believe all of the hitting ills are Bailey’s fault. Feel free.
When is last time they have lost three games in a row?
You say it as if losing three in a row is something negative.
Four games in a row….
Yawn…. four? That’s nothing. I’ll pay attention when it hits ten and my all-time record is in jeopardy.
“The Tecolotes (14-11) are familiar with having strong starts on the mound that later fade as the game progresses. But Friday saw one of the Tecolotes’ strongest pitching performances of the year as Luke Heimlich got the win on the rubber.…he pitched seven innings allowing six hits while striking out seven.”
https://www.lmtonline.com/sports/article/Strong-performance-on-the-mound-leads-Tecos-to-13818875.php
Where’s my Chalupa?
Watched a short video clip – AAA?
Without Adley we are a middle of the pac team. If he’s not 1-1 I’ll eat my leg.
I say “middle of the pac” very generously.
The lack of hitting has become a trend. One player cannot carry a team if no one is getting on base. With the injuries to the pitching staff, I don’t see this team going very far in the tourney.
Perhaps without the PC bad cop to balance the PB good cop routine, the team has lost their edge.
Just like Cougar in Top Gun. Bunting to give up an out with one away was just dumb.
Sat by fan last night and said she knows an umpire for the conference who shared with her the team is less disciplined this year and players are more relaxed. Use to be with PC they were always looking over their shoulder. Bails will make adjustments.
^ Hey that was my theory. This guy has no edge and players aren’t scared to lose playing time. Confirmed correct again.
Apparently you missed the previous messaging. YoungVirgin has forbidden such statements from being made on this site. We are to treat this season as an isolated series of events and ignore that Pat Casey’s competitiveness carries over to the players.
Damn autocorrect… I meant YoungOrst
Why is Pearce starting? Getting shelled.
Settled in and pitched pretty well. Victim of Mully’s ineffectiveness and a bad call on the HBP, the batter should have been told to stay put and not given firstbase.
Wow. Now Jake M getting rocked. Things going to shit.
Well at least the ducks got murdered 28-7.
It’s like a football score.
Why didn’t Gambrell pitch? Is he injured?
Story (take it for what it’s worth) is that after his long stint last outing he needed to rest. Better to be fully rested for the quacks than pitch I a non conference game
If we have to travel for a super regional then it’s a long row to hoe. See 2011 in Nashville
As opposed to a long road to ho….
Before today the pitching staff had a lower ERA than last year but the offense is hitting 55 points lower. Hard to believe that the returnees aren’t hitting better, especially Taylor and Malone. Doesn’t make sense as Bailey was the main hitting coach as I understand it. Maybe with the extra HC responsibilities he can’t work with them as much.
We lost 3 1st rd draft picks of course the offense won’t be as good. No Heimlich and no Abel. With or without Casey that’s gonna be hard to overcome. Not Bails fault
I get that we lost a lot of our offense and hitting will suffer (obviously). But why have 4-5 guys totally regressed from last year? That is the most alarming thing to me about this season. It seems like we’ve lost that “never say die” attitude. I like Bailey but certainly won’t be said if Casey comes back (or becomes the new AD).
I’m at the padres dodgers game today and so hunter renfroe knocks a grand slam over my head to win it. Eff Mississippi State, and Danny Hayes had you guys, but i remember that dude getting a bomb in Omaha too and it’s nice seeing the dodgers go down too
RPI took a dive.
Would it be too “definitive” to say that the series vs ucks this weekend may be a good indicator of the effectiveness of this approach? An approach which may be based in phrases such as: “a little adversity”, and “not going to do anything negative”
Well, certainly no more definitive than when youngvirgin er youngorst says, “we have no clue rather (sic) the team would be playing better or worse with him in the dugout….”
Wow, that’s a very soft, Riley-esque quote.
OTOH Beau Philip said, of the 14 hit performance Sunday, “We’re going to take this game as a positive,” he said. “We got the bats going and I’m proud of our team for that. I think that’s just kind of a step in the right direction. You’ve got to take your small victories sometimes. I think we’re going in the right direction.”
Beau may be the type of dugout leader this squad needs, nice to note that Bailey recognized that enough to take him on the AZ trip even though he was not in condition to take the field.
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-beavers-not-panicking-after-four-game-slide/article_66bb4064-13e7-5bad-a812-fea45f35c05d.html
One doesn’t have to be “negative” to challenge others and hold others them to a higher standard.
That whole quote is weak; not because its not punitive, but because it relies on hypebole (am I supposed to “destroy them?!?” WTF) and its neither challenging nor solutions based. He said similarly weak things early in the season.
He needs to go back to his former position next season. This can’t become a pattern for the program if they want to maintain excellence.
Who said it’s weak because it isn’t negative?
Good points. Was it “negative” when Casey repeatedly said that the players make the lineup by their own performance?
Another thing Casey said, which Bailey may not believe, “I don’t become friends with players until they graduate”
Casey batted Gabe Clark 4th, so he didn’t listen to what he preached.
angry why don’t you fill us in on what a coach should say…?
He should say this. “Gosh golly….we need to find an identity. We should have run the ball, I mean bunted more.”
Perhaps MR can lend his coaching magic to the baseball team since we have him on retainer.
Like a very hard to please father (I have one), Casey always found the negative thing to say in every situation and rarely dealt out praise. Say what you want about the mental state of someone who has to live with people like this, but they typically DO excel and end up trying really hard in order to please that person.
When “attaboys” are really hard to earn, people try harder to achieve them. I know this is old fashioned and not politically correct for 2019, but it’s hard to argue with results.
I think this is true and it’s simple motivation. To adjust it more to the modern age: you don’t have to say something negative, you just don’t have to acknowledge the positive. People want to hear that praise. This is why Riley is a failure. Would anyone here be afraid to let down Riley on the field or in any aspect of life? I wouldn’t. So the only good Beav teams under Riley where the ones where the players took charge and held one another accountable. If they had natural leaders among the players they were decent. Those last few years they had a bunch of quiet, soft players, and Riley sure as hell wasn’t going to motivate anyone.
In contrast, what Gary Andersen did was not motivation but verbal/mental abuse. There’s a fine line and it’s all about the intent, and how that intent comes across to the players.
Really you want someone who understands the psychology of motivation and what makes people perform their best, either intuitively or studied it. You also want to recruit players who have an internal drive and want to perform their best without any external motivation. These types of players are invaluable.
I always kind of wondered if some of those teams, like the James Rodgers led team would have been worse with a more hands on coach. I think the players are always going to be better at holding other players accountable than the coach could ever be but when the teams lack a “James Rodgers” the coach needs to recognize that and fill that void.
Two down votes? Looks like we still have a few Riley fans here.
“it’s all about the intent, and how that intent comes across to the players.”
Spot on!
Even Riley may have had good intentions but we’ve all seen, if we are honest, is that what comes across to the players is far from the attitude required for continuing success…in nearly any field of endeavor!
Two down votes indeed. Hard to understand.
Anyone heard whether Riley is headed back to give his wise counsel to OSU football?
I think he called your mom
Don’t know about Riley, but Dennis Erickson spoke to the team on April 19 before the Spring Game. Just received an email headlined, “Coach Erickson is Ready! Join the Climb Today!”.
Wha’d he say? “Sombody’s got to win it. Why not us?”
I’d much prefer fund raising emails feature Erickson than Jack’s favorite multiple time quitter!
This idea for scholarships would have been and maybe would still be hopeful for Smith.

The Ouch List: Oregon State Leads The Pain Train. D1 Baseball. Not a good headline
And yet, all is not lost, D1, in their weekly chat has these mentions:
Fitt: “I’m not really worried about Oregon State falling out of the hosting mix, the Beavers are just fine. Their top-eight chances certainly took a big hit, though.
Rogers: “Let’s see what happens this coming weekend and in the couple of weeks ahead before I commence concerns about Oregon State, but there’s no doubt the Beavers have little margin for error on the mound, especially with an offense that was never going to be great this season. Sometimes teams need a little kick to the teeth, and perhaps this was needed for the Beavs. I would think they’ll come out mad against Oregon. We’ll see.”
I agree with Rogers on the need for a kick in the teeth, Beavs sure got one. Now the series with the phiting phils is nearly as important as the one with Stanford. Well, actually, they are all important, even SC at home.
Getting swept at home sucks, but over the last two weeks they’ve lost six games by 10 runs total, four of those games by one run — one clutch hit from winning in each of those one run losses. Rutschman missed a potential three run homer by a couple of feet in that last lost. What is encouraging is seeing Philip hit well. It sucks that Gambrell was out too — lots of things have to line up for this team to lose four in a row.
This is very true. It seems like last year we were winning all of the close games, and this year we are losing most of the close games. There have been a large number of games this year we were 1 clutch hit away from a win. Hopefully we start actually getting some of those clutch hits.

Anyone else having sporadic problems logging in due to JetPack?
Same computer, same router, same internet provider here, and yet locked out now and then by JP.
Jack is hacking the site for the Ruskies.
Adley Rutschman named national player of the month for April by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Rutschman, on a short list of players expected to become the first pick in major league baseball first-year player draft in June, hit .455 over 18 games in April. The former Sherwood High School star had five doubles, seven home runs and 23 runs batted last month.
During April, Rutschman reached base in 17 of 18 games, and had at least one hit in 16 games. Defensively, Rutschman didn’t commit an error in April, and went 3-for-3 in throwing out runners trying steal a base.
This season, Rutschman is hitting .429 with 16 home runs and 53 RBI, and has already established an OSU single-season record with 59 walks. He leads the nation with an on-base percentage of .579.
Wow, 10 games left and already a record for walks. I saw an article on Madigral’s pro career so far (crazy low strikeout rate for his number of at-bats, though many in “A” ball), and in it people were also looking forward to Rutschman going #1 in the draft.
ALWAYS hated Tini Allen anyways. Punk was always getting way too turnt up at the bars on campus and trying to get with any chick that would talk to him. Total loser scumbag!!!
Yeah he was a real piece of shit. Sayonara, cunt.
No wonder Gary Andersen recruited him.
Ah, stole your girl, huh? Well, plenty more fish in the sea, fella, get back out there and stop moping.
Don’t you mean more Beavs in the pond?
Lundeberg tweeted that Fehmel is starting Friday, Pearce on Saturday and Sunday is TBD. Hope this is just to move Eisert back to the pen and that he and Gambrell are both healthy.
Lundeberg followed that up with these stats on Eisert:
Eisert in 7 starts: ………..43 1/3 innings, 49 hits, 14 earned runs, 44 Ks, 12 walks.
Eisert in 7 relief appearances: 18 2/3 innings, 10 hits, 0 earned runs, 30 Ks, 1 walk.
Bob concluded: “Eisert has been a good starter and elite reliever. I like him in the pen. “
As for Gambrell, info on pitchers and their condition has been hazy all year; latest on Gambrell was that he needed rest last weekend (after a 124 pitch game) and was good to go for the CW. We’ll see soon.
Didn’t Pearce get shellacked in his Tuesday night start recently? Pitching staff is running out of options. I guess we have been spoiled to have 1 or no weak weekend starters. Most teams have 1 good starter and the Beavs typically have 2-3.
Who hasn’t been shellacked in a midweek start?
True that! But were they then moved to be the Saturday starter? Might as well keep Tweedt as the mid week starter and just forfeit all remaining mid week games.
