Beavs win 4-1, Fehmel complete game. Gave up 8 hits, 1 ER on 112 pitches.
Question now is, how good is the rest of the ucks pitching staff? And can their 3b continue to steal doubles from the good guys.

Oh yeah, the jockitch/cj curse is broken, a night to remember for that fact alone!

“how good is the rest of the ucks pitching staff?”

Arizona lit them up last weekend. 28 runs on Sunday. You read that right. Arizona won by three touchdowns.

Beavs need to win this series. A sweep would be preferable.

I’ve read/heard that Eisert didn’t start tonight because of a sore elbow and/or resting. Gambrell is questionable for Sunday after sitting-out “resting” last weekend. Verburg is out indefinitely, waiting to see an expert and, of course, Abel gone to tommy john. It’s amazing this team is sitting in first place right now. Is the Pac-12 really that great? If we win the conference would we be a top 8 team. Our RPI isn’t great and it will be tough to win our regional without most of our pitchers (our bats aren’t that great minus Adley); but this team has proven to pull out some unexpected wins and are still sitting in first place in the PAC. I fear a big collapse, but I’m still watching.

It was a 124 pitch outing that resulted in Gambrell missing last weekend, how will a 112 pitch effort effect Fehmel? Hopefully his maturity and style will allow him to pitch again next weekend.

Apples and oranges as Gambrell throws heat while Fehmel is mostly an off speed location guy. Less stress on Fehmel’s arm than Gambrell who throws 95 or so. Fehmels top speed fastball is around 90-91.

Eggers, who was denied an interview with our favorite AD this week, pulls no punches in his evaluation of Barnes’ “no comment” on the Baseball HC situation, says, “Instead of a “no comment,” he should have said this:
“We’ll extend our June 1 deadline for Pat Casey’s request for reassignment until a week after the season ends. If he decides not to return, I’ll remove the ‘interim’ from Pat Bailey’s title and make him permanent head coach. He deserves that.”

More in the piece, including comments on Horton’s possible future.

From Goe’s article. Not gonna link it…………..

Brandon Eisert and Grant Gambrell, normally OSU’s Friday and Sunday starters respectively, turned up this week with pitching arms Bailey referred to as “tender.”

“They’re both going to be back next week,” Bailey said. “They might throw in relief this week, but they’re not going to start.”

Probably a good weekend to rest them both since Oregon isn’t that great of a hitting team. Save the arms for Stanford.

Watched a couple of innings of Stanford vs. Cal after OSU game. Yikes, as Stanford was playing HR derby. They look scary good. If the Beavs can get 1 out of 3 next weekend, I’ll be happy, but first things first. Take care of the Ducks this weekend and last night was a good start. The kid for the Ducks threw pretty well yesterday, but I think he’s their best guy some maybe our bats wake up tonight. Go Beavs.

If Casey doesn’t come back they need a national search. Couple options with Oregon connections I think might have interest are Scott Brosius and Mitch Canham.

Canham is seems to be on a path towards being a big league manager so not sure he’d be interested but a call should be made.

UPDATE: FINAL IN BERKELEY, BEARS WIN 18-2

It was a horrible strike call and reminded me of the home plate umpire in 2017 in the LSU series. I mean, I’ll give the umpire the benefit of the doubt when it a few inches out of the zone but this was into the inside line of the batter’s box on the other side of the plate. Regardless, the Beavs left something like 13-14 ROB and that was their own undoing. That said, if you would have told me going into next weekend’s series against Stanford tied for the conference lead, I would have wondered what you were smoking. Yet, with all of the injuries to the big time arms, the Beavs still have a shot. If Eisert and Gambrell are good to go, I think we’ve got a good shot to win at least 1 or maybe 2 games, but Stanford is awfully talented.

I found it odd that they did this huge write up about The Quacks meaningless game three win, babbling on about their incredible pitching (I guess they used a reliever as a starter?). I was surprised they didn’t somehow find a way to say that The Quacks still had a shot at the tournament, but that was the only thing they refrained from in the lovefest.

Another quote from Pat Bailey. I realize there is a difference, maybe a fine line, between constructive criticism and confidence killing emphasis on the negative.

Bailey is, by all accounts, a good man and he has gotten this team tied for the top of the PAC with several significant injuries. That said, the absence of Casey’s style of tough love, fact based, and motivational criticism is obvious when you read things like this from the GT:

“We left 15 guys on base and that’s the difference in the game,” Bailey said. “We had 12 hits and only scored two runs (which) is crazy…
“I told them after don’t hang your heads, we’re playing great defense, we came back and had a chance both in the eighth and the ninth innings to tie or win a game. We had a chance, all we needed was a hit. That’s baseball.”

I’m waiting to hear the quotes like, “We will find out who our best 9 hitters are in the important moments. Which guys will step up and be consistent contributors. We have had chances to win games but we aren’t coming through right now. I expect someone to make a play in a key moment against Stanford.”

I go on vacation for a bit and come back to getting swept at home?

They are basically where I expected them to be at the start of the year. Good team but hitting holds them back.

Pitching injuries now will prevent much of a run in the tourney.

Just surprised that few guys have stepped up in this year with the amount of opportunity and the regression of more than a few. Hasn’t been a next man up kind of team.

Unless they get hot offensively, it’s looking like supers are the ceiling this year.

I agree, WFO. Seems the idea of moving Colletto to LB is weak not only because Beavs already have a strong RB corps, but because it removes an experienced QB from the mix.

And AK makes a good point too; he wouldn’t be the first LB to get a few shots at carrying the ball in short yardage goal line situations.

LB is one of the few positions with decent talent/depth. Hmmm. Hopefully he can do both. The running QB does give a added look to the offense, but the pass threat needs to be there. If he is practicing with the D, that dimension will wither.

From D1’s latest field of 64 projection:
Not even a mention of Beavs as having a chance to host a Super, slated at #12 vs #5 Louisville.
    PAC has 5 bids, SEC+ACC total 19.
The Gauchos, from angry’s old neighborhood, may host a regional in Las Vegas.
And, another angry connection: Georgia and Georgia Tech sit at #7 and #8, for now.

A little early for a Tournament Thread here, but a Stanford series thread seems due. Angry?

Under Smith, Oregon State isn’t nearly as prominent on Twitter. He hasn’t posted anything to his personal Twitter account since last October. Oregon State football has an active Twitter account, but it mostly spreads news about the current team and former players. OSU assistant coaches have personal Twitter accounts, and some use it to retweet posts from recruits.

Smith acknowledges there is value to using social media as a recruiting tool. It’s just not his style.

“Maybe I’m old school, but I’m just not on it that much,” Smith said. “I’m way more into phone calls that I can have with recruits rather than retweeting their picture. That doesn’t say I’m right for doing it and they’re wrong. It’s just a different way of doing it.

“I’m more into the authentic relationship.”

Smith pauses, and turning to Oregon, says “I’m not saying their stuff isn’t authentic. I’m really not. Sounds like (Cristobal) is all over Twitter. I don’t know. I haven’t seen it. I’m sure there are some benefits to it.”

One might hypothesize that Smith’s method would attract the high output, low ego type of player. So many kids these days are most concerned with seeing their name in lights. The type of player Smith wants is becoming rare and likely makes recruiting much harder. What does he offer as incentive if he doesn’t provide the glitz and glamour like other programs?

Smith can offer a culture that kids believe in and coaching that can help them get better. He will find kids that value the chance to get coached. Not all kids want that or will be receptive to it. He did well at schools with non-elite talent which is what he has at OSU at this point. You don’t hear about glitz and glamour but not all kids want that. Look at Utah for example. Those players don’t seem to care about the attention or the uniform combinations. They respect their coach and take pride in disturbing the expected conference big dogs. It wasn’t long ago the Beavs were winning 6-8 games a year with the same type of guys he is recruiting now.

Per Lundeberg, “Friday’s forecast in Palo Alto looks fine, but the weekend could be problematic…Under normal circumstances, Oregon State would not be required to stay Monday if two games get played. But these are not normal circumstances, and I know people behind the scenes have been working out the details”

Saturday’s game has already been moved to a noon start, apparently due to incoming storm late Saturday/early Sunday. Even with the time change, the game is still set to be on PAC12 net, according to The School site.

@Rev, yes I saw some of them but couldn’t watch the whole game. I’m not saying the coaching is perfect etc. There obviously has been some differences this year in attention to detail. I just get tired of the predictable comments when they lose regarding Bailey/Casey. And some of the third year players are definitely not stepping up Lomé they should. They also are more like second year or even first year full time players. They should be growing up by now and that game could have easily been a win. Should we think back to when Casey didn’t challenge the call down the line in the college World Series two years ago? He wasn’t a perfect coach. No coaches are. We have to trust Bailey is getting these guys where they need to be when it matters most. I want to see what they do in a regional. And who cares if they host. If all pitchers are healthy and the bats are clicking that’s more important.

We looked bad in every aspect of the game tonight. Fehmel was not on and after screaming at my TV for Pat to pull him, in trots Mundt and suddenly I’m thinking “oh crap, maybe that’s why he wasn’t eager to pull Fehmel”.

Where on earth our are all of our pitchers? Why are half of them sore or injured?

I love Tyler Malone but man, he’s really struggling this year, on defense and offense.

Joe Casey had a really good game this tonight.

The worst thing about our team is that they look defeated throughout the game. They are missing that never say die spirit that they had the last couple years. If we were down in the late innings last year you would almost think “this is right where we want them”. Now if we get down a run or two in the 6th I feel like it’s insurmountable. If we are down 1 in the 7th they basically just have to walk Adley, get Ober to pop up to end the inning and you can almost be assured it’s 6 more easy outs and game over.

Who knows, Stanford looked clearly better than us, but I’m not sure that was saying much. I’m not sure either of us deserve to be top 15 teams right now.

I know we are still ranked decent and are probably doing better than some people expected, but our team is worse in every single way and getting worse by the week it seems. Where on earth would we be without Adley right now. The best part of the rest of this year is going to be seeing him go 1-1 in the draft.

Last night was a debacle. Not unexpected to lose at Stanford on a Friday night without 4 of the top 6 pitchers available for an extended period of time does tend to take a toll.
However, Adley made 3 major gaffs, allowing Stanford to be aggressive on the bases successfully, a passed ball, and 2 atrocious throws to 2nd on steals.
Adley’s throws were bad, but Malone was trying to be Dave Parker in right, but threw it to the back stop like he was tossing to home plate located in the press box. In addition, Malone was on roller skates on the fly he lost in the sun(dusk sky, lights?) Malone should be batting 1st or 9nt because he isn’t coming out of the slump and isn’t reliable to continue any type of rally at this point. I’d rather see someone else in right.
Beavs took a 2 run lead into the bottom of the 5th and Fehmel decided to start throwing bp instead of pitching like a Friday starter in the Pac12.

These are supposed to be the team leaders and settle everybody down for a big game, but they all melted in the basic fundamentals. I agree with Rev above. Fundamentals are not good and discipline is becoming a fond memory. Prove me wrong, injuries have been brutal all year, but so have the upperclassmen (Adley aside).

Baley has a big challenge and he must have known the comparisons would happen. He has them within reach of a conference championship and Regional seed, which is great for many programs in the country. I’m trying not to be that entitled fan who expects to make Omaha every year, but that is the bar that Casey was able to set and fulfill. Go Beavs!

Good to see Zac T hit the homer. Senior season has not gone as expected, but he was the unsung hero of last season’s CWS and has been a great Beaver.

Did I hear correctly that the two Oregon kids on the Stanford roster played with Aldley and Zac on the same little league team?

He was hitting something like .127 with 0 home runs when they sent him in there to pinch hit with bases loaded.

They must really love the kid to send them in there with those kind of stats in that important of a situation. Last year he was batted .274. He’s one of the more perplexing drop-offs. Maybe he will turn it around this week.

Stanford has two kids from West Linn High School. Their shortstop Tim Tawa (Sophomore) and their DH and Pitcher Will Mathiessen (Junior). That West Linn High School team was loaded with talent. Included Karsen Lindell who was a UW commit as well but turned pro instead I believe.

I believe that Zac played with Will on one of his summer ball teams and had played against Tawa growing up.

The Oregonian has apparently pissed off the wrong people. They posted a clickbait/trolling article after the blazers most recent playoff loss, where they quote social media posts that trolled the blazers. Referencing the blazers guards as the “trash brothers” because they dont measure up to golden state’s “splash brothers”.

Sure, it’s not their own material, but if you dont bother reading the post, it looks like it’s the oregonian coining the phrase.

On top of that, the Blazers star player is playing through a significant rib injury and not really deserving of this treatment.

Well, the Blazers team management didnt appreciate it and has decided to pull all advertising from the oregonian. Whoops.

Wish OSU did the same in relation to the Heimlich coverage.

Here is Aaron Fitt on the failure of the PAC to see that the OSU-Stanford series included a third game. Note he (and others) places the blame on the PAC12 Network.

The PAC12 Network, you know, the reason for Larry Scott’s level of pay!

Fitt says, “The Pac-12 really dropped the ball in a huge way by not allowing Stanford and Oregon State to play a doubleheader on Friday, to accommodate the Pac-12 Network. “

Fitt goes on to talk about winning percentage determining conference winner and how one loss by Bruins coupled with two wins by Beavs could give the Beavs the title. He admits he’ll have to check this out. NOTE: He should also check out his math; even if the Beavs sweep vs SC, it will take two losses by UCLA for the Beavs to have a better winning percentage.

BTW, Fitt doesn’t see the Beavs hosting a super even if they do, somehow, end up on top of the PAC12.

Hosting a super isn’t out of the question. Half the top 8 lost in regionals last year.

I wouldn’t have counted out the 2016-2018 teams, but I have no problem agreeing with the notion that this year’s team won’t get past a super regional on the road against a top-16 seed team.

They have not shown the mental strength to win close games, they make too many fielding mistakes, and (the biggest reason) they lack plate discipline. Pitching depth is important in tournament play, but drawing walks and scoring runs is crucial (hence, why Florida loses in the tournament almost every year.)

They will get smacked in two games if they have to go on the road to Mississippi State or Vanderbilt for the supers.

I think OSU has a decent shot at landing UW transfer Colson Yankoff.
Makes sense from the perspective that he already committed to play for Smith at UW. Also from a depth chart perspective. He has to sit 1 year. After that, he would have only Gebbia to compete with for 2 years and would be almost guaranteed to start as a senior. Also consider that Smith has recently asked Colletto to move over to the defensive side of the ball, meaning our remaining depth is that much thinner, with only Willard and Moore remaining, plus incoming freshman Gulbrantson.
Yankoff would be guaranteed a starting spot in his next eligible playing year if Gebbia ever went down with an injury. It’s a good situation to step into actually. He’s also an engineering guy when it comes to academice, and playing at OSU would allow him more road games closer to home than most other options.

He visited UCLA unofficially last week and I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear about him visiting OSU soon.

It was Colletto’s idea to make the switch because he wants to play. Smith ok’d it but if Luton and Gebbia were to be out for a while he could move back over. Yankoff would fit in nicely to bridge the gap between Gebbia and the prep commit. It’s unfortunate that Willard has not progressed. Not sure if that was a bad evaluation by GA’s staff or if he just got lost in the coaching change.

Willard was pretty clearly awful as a prep.
Colletto had intrigue and value with what he did. It’s a bummer he switched. We lose a goal line threat for a linebacker who will never play, so we got worse.

Can Smith still put Colletto in for the same packages he played last year? I don’t see why he can’t still run up the middle. It’s not like he is risking an injury to his throwing arm.

Yankoff had pretty similar rushing stats as a prep, averaging about 100 yds per game, but he’s also a much better passer than Colletto. In this scenario, we lose Colletto’s run threat for a season, but get better in the long run.
And like Krol suggests, Colletto would still technically be available.

I’d almost rather throw 2 RBs out there than Colletto and 1RB anyway. Colletto just isn’t much of a threat to pass. We all saw his Civil War jump pass INT at the goal line in the Civil War.

I’ve advocated a wing T approach to utilize the strength of the RB corps. Regardless of formation, I like having 2 RB sets in the playbook, and using those sets in short yardage situations…anywhere on the field.

One thing about Colletto being in the QB room: sure, it gives you a (predictable) backup if the first two or three guys go down, BUT, doesn’t it take up at least some of the coaches time/effort along with practice reps which could be spent on others?

Beason grades out as a high three star. Why isn’t he a four star? production. He doesn’t have much. His film is 90% screens too. Report say he caught under 30 balls last year.

    The goods,
He’s got football speed, plays fast, shows awareness when trying to make a play, catches the ball away from his body.

The best part about his film is that it shows him blocking. That’s something that’ll get him on the field early.

    The questions,
Routes – I mean the film didn’t show a whole lot outside of the screens.
Can he separate against good dbs?

Hopefully he has a big senior year and signs in the early period. Other schools will come after him hard when they strike out on their first choices.

Getting and staying healthy will be the most important thing this year. that, and improvement on defense. if we trot out the same sad effort on defense this year that we saw in 2018, I can even see Cal Poly marching down the field with time killing, sustained, triple-option drives. They’re not a great team talent wise, but their scheme is so different and we’re just a terrible defensive team anyway.
Hawaii is improved and on the road
OK State (and really every other team we face) is more talented top to bottom.

On the bright side, we have a better DLine this year(hopefully?), we’re adding Addison Gumbs(hopefully??) and we get David Morris back from injury (hopefully???)

But yeah, 2-3 wins really feels like a reasonable expectation and anything better feels like it would be because the breaks went our way (no injuries for us, key injuries for the opponent)

I was a stat recently showing totals wins for FBS teams over the last 5 years. We’re 3rd from worst with 14, trailing only Kansas(9) and Kent State(12).

This season is all about QB play. Defense will see if Luton or Gebbia are up to task. QB completion rate needs to go up to mid 60s for the Beavs to win multiple games and open up the running game.

And if the offense is moving the ball, it’ll keep the defense from being exposed. Smith has shown, he doesn’t really go with the hurry offense all the time.

That being said, the ceiling is 4-5 wins.

I don’t know, we’re talking about a historically bad defense last season (thank god UConn was the worst). The D has to improve by at least 25% on key measurements to get the win total to 3 or 4. QB play is important, but when a team is beyond shit on defense that has to be the focus for improvement.

That’s what I remember reading too. it was Eggers suggestion to Barnes, rather than a blanket “no comment” statement.

Barnes was on the radio in portland this morning, but i missed most of it. Rip city Mornings on 620AM, at around 7:20.
I managed to catch the tail end to him answering a question about Casey and all I heard was Casey hasn’t decided yet and will either be remaining as the Associate AD or returning as HC. And if he doesn’t return to coaching, the decision will come soon enough that there will still be plenty of time to perform a national coaching search. He said national coaching search more than one time. Seems to be one of those things he really prides himself on is conducting coaching searches.

There was more conversation about athletic department budget and football going away from payday games and trying to schedule more home games with G5 opponents. Nigel Burns seemed pretty skeptical that the Oregon State budget can handle that type of change to scheduling.

Anybody else listen in? I barely was able to catch anything. Maybe a podcast will be put out later.

go back and re-read the article. It specifically states that they will extend the deadline to 7 days after the season ends for reassignment. Initially, I thought it was 10days but it’s only 7. It’s not what they should do but rather it’s what they have agreed to do.

my mistake as I overlooked that sentence and found the sentence I referred to above. If Barnes doesn’t give him additional time after the season ends, he’s more of a fool than we thought. Given everything Casey has done for OSU and baseball in this state, he should have as much flexibility as he has earned and deserved it. If not, Barnes can take a hike and I don’t think anyone would be sad if he did.

You are makin’ me feel like Rodney Dangerfield! I posted Eggers mention of what Barnes should say on this thread above at 10:34pm on 5/10.
            Here is that post:

“Eggers, who was denied an interview with our favorite AD this week, pulls no punches in his evaluation of Barnes’ “no comment” on the Baseball HC situation, says, “Instead of a “no comment,” he should have said this:
“We’ll extend our June 1 deadline for Pat Casey’s request for reassignment until a week after the season ends. If he decides not to return, I’ll remove the ‘interim’ from Pat Bailey’s title and make him permanent head coach. He deserves that.”

More in the piece, including comments on Horton’s possible future.”

Ashley Rutschman is the perfect storm of genetics and environment. The small item referring to his wanting to get out of the car to play with a group of kids he saw . . . I fear no more. School grounds locked down, open space owners afraid to allow games for fear someone will sue them if there’s an injury, 4-year-olds in competition. My past winter in Nicaragua, I enjoyed seeing youngsters devise games on their own. Talent that will never go beyond the dirt streets.

D1 now has Beavs (RPI 14) opposite Georgia Tech (RPI 8) regional. Lundeberg’s “slam dunk” remark looking valid.

BYU still in Corvallis regional, but one of “last five in”, sets up a possible Thursday start to the regional.

Looks like no Las Vegas regional hosted by UCSB, Gauchos now are slated for the Stanford regional.

As for offense, pedestrian is putting it mildly. Totals for the 3 games: 32 k’s and15 hits (7 of which were by either Philip or Rutschman).

From the “Does it matter now?” file, there is this from Eggers twitter:

We still have no explanation in the press box what the call was on Zalesky’s strikeout with runners second and third and one out in B8. He was not allowed to run to first on the third strike after the ball bounced off the turf.

Sure seemed strange that he didn’t run that one out, but Philip’s slow start on his double down the line seemed strange too. Gotta think Zalesky heard the ump cry “foul”.

The Beavers have lost eight of their last 13 games heading into the postseason, after today’s shutout Bailey said this (per the GT),

“There’s nothing you can do about it so you’ve got to show up and I told them today things had better change from a competitive viewpoint in terms of helping each other out and wanting to fight for one another,” Bailey said. “That’s going to have to change if we want to do well in the postseason.”

I am still amazed at some of the reactions on this site. You guys have raised Pat Casey to god status. Teams aren’t going to be the #1 seed every year.

And to answer the coaching vs. talent question. It is most likely talent. This team just doesn’t have the talent other OSU teams have had.

I absolutely want Pat Casey back because he is Pat Casey but I don’t think they’d be that much better with Casey. I just don’t.

I think we have to ask ourselves if Casey was the coach this year would the team have hit better? Some badly needed veterans have regressed and some of the younger players never developed consistency. Does fear make someone hit better or not take called third strikes? I don’t know. This team seems somewhat similiar to the team that didn’t make the tournament in 2016. I don’t rememver us getting all over Casey’s shit back then, we were mostly on Meggs.

It’s coaching. The Bailey quotes and his philosophy prove that.
These players would be afraid of Casey and perform for him. Bailey is Riley. When I say “afraid” I don’t mean in the GA way of abuse, but more they’d feel Casey’s intensity and know there would be repercussions (playing time, etc) for their performance. These guys don’t seem to care about any of that and have a blase attitude. That’s a top down problem.

“Riley has his faults but his program was much more successful than what we’ve seen since.”

It’s a fools errand to compare Riley to “what we’ve seen since”. The standard should relate more to what can realistically be achieved by a HC, period. Alertness to the real-time game situation, willingness to support his own players when dirty hits occur, the list goes on. Riley, especially for the last several years, did not measure up.

As for raising Pat Casey to God Status, I’ve already posted a reminder of the regional loss to the Anteaters, by a Casey coached team which BTW lost 2 of 3 to SC to close out the season in 2014.
And, have you seen any other site refer to Casey’s “warts”?

Whether angry ever hit off a T is irrelevant, he has a (while Not God Like) pretty good record analyzing coaches and, especially, football players. It’s all a discussion of opinions here anyway.

I have a hard time saying Bailey is a poor leader. A poor leader could not have Bailey’s record at George Fox (353-158, National COY in ’04, Eight times named NW Conf COY).

We have a very small sample of Bailey as HC at this level. Given that, are there differences between his situation at G. Fox and now? It is hard to believe he had better assistants at GF, maybe the caliber of athletes is part of the answer? Do those players respond better to his approach?

Regardless, there is a basic approach to these discussions which may be causing confusion (and some apparent animosity): Some here don’t recognize that the standard being used to define “good coach”, “good performance” is not always a comparison to a specific individual (ex: Casey, Riley) but to a standard. That standard, it seems to me, is a level of performance which (in the mind of the writer) is reasonably achievable.

It does seem reasonably achievable that Bailey’s team should have seen improvement by at least some of the veterans who’ve been mentioned here.

Speaking of veterans, pause a moment, please, to reflect on the sacrifices made by many. Nowadays so many do not even know a service member, your interest in hearing the story of a vet you may encounter will brighten their day…..and yours.

Record wise this team finished about as expected. However, you can’t deny there was a lack of player development and an inability to manufacture runs. Preston Jones and Tyler Malone should have developed into top 10 round draft picks this year. Both regressed along with Claunch and Taylor. Casey teams always put pressure on the defense. I saw very few successful sac bunts or hit and runs this year. Regardless of the talent level this year the fundamentals weren’t there.

    Unrealistic expectations……

I can be as critical as anyone here. But some of you need step back and look at the last 15 years of Oregon St baseball for what it has been. What Pat Casey built. It took him 10 years to get a team to Omaha. Be appreciative of that. Enjoy this success. It’s not going to last forever. Even if Casey does comeback for next season.

Look at ASU. USC. Stanford. How many titles have they won? In the last 20 years????

No one is saying to accept mediocrity.

For the record, I am concerned about the regression of a handful of players this year. Especially with hitting. Is that a coaching issue or because of the loss of better hitters from last year that we’re able to protect in the lineup? Again, it’s possible we got spoiled. Last years team I believe was the best hitting team we’ve ever witnessed in Corvallis. This years team is Jekyll and Hyde.

But the team ERA is still there. That will keep them in games.

I said it over a month ago. This is a regional team. Could be a super regional team. They met my expectations. But I don’t expect a return trip to Omaha.

And yes, injuries are a factor. Not an excuse, angry. See last years Corvallis regional and ask LSU.

Valid points and I agree that the chance for a return to Omaha went out the window when Abel picked up that suitcase. As far as nothing lasting forever, those downturns followed the loss of a legendary coach. PC is young enough for another 8-10 year run if he wants to.

I think that is cause of my and most Beav fans angst. We finally have a self sustaining championship sports program and then the coach pulls the plug. It is the ultimate Luck O da Beavs moment.

Not a bad draw for first round. Weather looks good. Maybe they jell and do 2006 again?

If I was Adley on June 2nd I would check into a nice hotel, with twenty-four hour room service, handicapped equipped bathroom for added safety, full cable access and a pile of reading. Do not leave that room until the multi-million dollar check from Baltimore clears the bank on or about June 10th.

PS: On a side note. We are acquainted with Adley’s parent. They named him Adley in the hope that the nickname “Ad” would stick in honor of his grandfather the legendary LInfield coach and great mentor to hundreds of young men. Unfortunately granddad, who was born in 1931, was given the name Adolph. Some guy in Germany sort of ruined that name back in the 40’s.

“All three teams are hot, but not a lot of quality wins there. OSU has enough pitching to get through unscathed

I really want to stop looking ahead to UCLA, but the Creighton/Michigan/Cincinnati combo just isn’t that scary. Still surprised that OSU got an easier regional draw than several higher-ranked hosts, including Stanford and Mississippi State.”

Eggers up with two articles worth your time; one on Bailey and the other Yeski and pitching injuries.

Once again, Eggers calls out Barnes, some excerpts:
,,,So it appears that if Casey opts not to return to coach the Beavers, Bailey is out. Otherwise, why would there be a need for a “search”?
Bailey is handling the situation with class. He says he has not spoken about the situation with either Barnes — hard to believe — or Casey…
(Bailey says) “It’s great to win games, but the development of men is why both Pat and I are in the coaching business.”

It’s also why Barnes should show Bailey a little more respect.

The baseball team got exactly what they earned. The seeding is correct after losing the series to USC.

The offense will hold back this team from any significant postseason run. It’s unfair to compare the team to last year’s because of talent. BUT the floor last year for any regular was Armstrong at .262. This year, there are 9 guys who have seen a good amount of playing time hitting below that.

I didn’t believe it myself but when I checked the facts, this year’s pitching staff is better than last years even with all of the injuries. Credit to Yeskie for managing all of the injuries that popped up this year.

So for them to advance here’s the things that need to go right,

    1. Pitching needs to keep form. If Eisert returns, that’s a huge help.
    2. Bottom of the lineup guys need to grind out at bats and get on base anyway they can when the lineup turns over.
    3. It would help if lower seeds upset higher seeds on the other side of the brackets. If Beavs advance to Supers, they’ve never made it to Omaha going on the road.

If a team needs more than a few miracles to contend, then it’s not looking good. It’s going to be a tough regional. Then an even tougher super. Don’t really need to think beyond that.

Always appreciate your input and analysis, Bill.
      A couple comments:
      1) “If Eisert returns, that’s a huge help”……only if he shows very little rust.
      2) Along with the pitching stats being better than last year, some will be surprised to know that the conference W/L record this year is better than last (by 1 game).

The 2014 team had momentum and lost, the 2018 group had mo and won. This team has no momentum and needs to generate some from the very first regional game.

My outlook is a lot closer to yours, Bill, than to that of Lundeberg as mentioned above. I think he is smart not to make one of his “barefoot” bets on this.

    Re: Casey

If he hasn’t made up his mind yet, I don’t think he’s coming back.

I’m really not sure what to do with Bailey but I lean toward a new HC. The negatives of keeping Bailey on outweigh the positives.

Negatives – the long term health of the program due to his age, his ability to motivate players/regression of player development, recruiting a much younger generation,

Positives – managed a really crappy situation where his job was in question the whole year, managed to keep winning in spite of all the lost talent.

The big thing for me is the age. He’s not going to coach for a long time. A few more years and that’s it. I would make the change now while the program is still humming along instead of chancing a slow decline of the program. Of course, could always promote Yeskie. He’s going to be a top candidate this offseason. And if Yeskie gets a HC job somewhere else, then even more reason to bring in a new staff.

This would bring some turmoil to the current staff as they are all ex players.

So the big question would be, who do you bring in? Luckily the job will be the hottest one in the country so nearly everyone will take Barnes’s call. I really don’t know. I like the TCU coach a lot. Had success wherever he’s been. Snuck his team into the tourney this year.

BA has a list of potential guys. They speculate Bailey will get the job if Casey doesn’t return.

But as always, the future coach should be Mitch Canham. However, he’s on track for a big league job in the next several years.

I believe Casey will come back so I’m going to say when that happens, how does that affect the 2 paid assistant coaches? Does Bailey retire then, or someone else would then most likely leave instead of going back to unpaid.

I’m guessing Casey hasn’t announced anything right now because of the timing. Just because Casey hasn’t announced anything doesn’t mean his mind isn’t made up. I heard this weekend he is not very pleased with how the team has been going about their season. I agree with him but that doesn’t mean he is coming back. I think we all feel there have been some underachieving elements this year.

@Bill, good info on the pitching this year. It feels like the staff has taken a step back but they have kept the up and down offense within striking distance. If the offense had a few more timely hits, well, we know how that can change a record from years past.

Speaking to Yeskie at the autograph signing during football season at Truax, I don’t see Yeskie leaving. He has had his chances. Now that might be different if he wants the head coaching job at OSU and is passed over. I have confidence not in Barnes, but in Casey making sure the right person is the head coach next year whether it’s him, Yeskie, or Bailey. Casey won’t let Barnes do something dumb and lose out on Yeskie if he is the man for the job.

Maybe Casey is waiting to announce he will come back only if Barnes will leave?! I know who Beaver Nation would support!

I still buy into the theory this was just a plan to get Bailey a pay bump before he retires as a thank you for everything he’s done for the program. Yeskie got the big raise last year and the athletic department didnt have the funds to also give Bailey a big bump. This plan allowed Casey to get one of his friends paid before he heads off into the sunset. Then Casey comes back and resumes control of the program while Bailey gets a more comfortable retirement.
I read that Casey has, at minimum, a 10 day grace period even after his final deadline passes.

The contract, obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive, has a section titled ‘Reassignment.’ It says Casey can ask to be reassigned as OSU baseball coach within a specific period of time.

In order to resume duties as baseball coach, Casey must request the reassignment by June 1, 2019, or earlier, if the school begins to negotiate with a prospective head coaching candidate. In that case, Barnes must give Casey written notice, and Casey has 10 days to respond.

Here is the actual contract language regarding reassignment, the 10 day period applies only if the University is looking for a new HC prior to June 1. Since we are now within 10 days of June 1, that consideration is mute.

        B. Casey’s option to request reassignment under Section VI(A) expires if University does not receive Casey’s written request on or before the earlier of:
        1. June 1, 2019; or
        2. 10 business days following Director’s written notice to Casey that the University desires
to engage in negotiations with a prospective Head Coach of the University baseball
        team.

Really, though, until a new HC is named (or negotiations with a prospective new HC are in a very advanced stage) it is hard to imagine even Barnes refusing to reinstate Casey if Casey says he wants the job.

If we go back in time a little, thinking back to when Casey’s “retirement” was announced, the whole thing felt like a charade. Casey didn’t want to have his retirement announced. Barnes is the one who made it happen. In my opinion, he needed to make everything look legitimate and like a late decision by Casey to avoid the need for a late season coaching search.

That way, Bailey could assume the interim role immediately, without our AD needing to go through the whole interview process/minority candidate consideration steps/etc…

Casey didn’t want the attention of a retirement, probably because he wasn’t actually retiring. I still think the whole thing was orchestrated to get Bailey a nice raise with minimal effort on the ADs part. And now that he has a nice bonus, Bailey can retire and Casey can return. Then Jenkins moves up into the assistant role Bailey held in the past.

The June 1st deadline was just poor planning on everybody’s part. Now, Casey needs to make his intentions known possibly during the Beavs postseason run (or after, if they lose their first 2 games by Saturday afternoon). Maybe Casey knew they wouldn’t make it past Saturday? ouch

Go after the ex-Beav now coach of UCSB. He is young, a proven winner, and tends to do more with less. He was a big reason how Oregon was able to become a decent pitching program in 2013, etc. His team upset Louisville in 2015 with a walk-off grand slam. Not sure if he would want to leave Santa Barbara, nice weather, etc, but if he wants a step up in facilities and pedigree….he’d be the man.

This kid is from Salem originally and wants to play for OSU, so recruiting him probably didnt take much effort. And he is already ranked as a 3* guy who will only go up between now and signing day.

Different guy actually. There’s a plug and play transfer on defense too. Might take a couple of weeks before we learn anything.

Read some scuttlebutt on PO that he’s a post college mission kid. That would be a nice get if true

Didn’t know he had OR roots and is a Beav fan. This makes more sense. This might help him stay committed to OSU after his mission. Appreciate the insight.

Sounds like the general feeling around the football team regarding football recruiting is next week hopefully we get one more on board. Will try to learn a little more between now and then, but sounds optimistic we’ll add another 2020 guy soon.
