2019 Recruiting Rankings

60

As always, these are ranked in order, so the highest 3 star on my list is the one I think is the best in that grouping. If you’d like to donate to AB please click here.

*****

Tristan Gebbia — Possibly the only 5-star I’ve ever handed out. He could be the best QB in OSU history. His film is that good. Not a single flaw. Perfect mechanics, touch, etc, and I watched an interview with him to see if he has leadership qualities, and he does.

****

Luke Musgrave — This guy has a bit of Gronk in him. How is he not a universal 4-star? Game changer who is going to make our QBs look good. Under recruited with the only other good offers coming from Cal and Oregon.

Addison Gumbs — His high school film shows a 5-star talent. Incredible speed and rushing ability. But, his ACL injury knocks him down a peg. He likely will never be that player, but he should be very good. Let’s hope his surgery holds up.

Tyjon Lindsey — He has 4.5 speed and makes some very difficult catches.

***

Avery Roberts — Has four star talent, but seems to lack heart. Looks like a guy to whom the game came easy, and so he never learned the nuances. If they can coach him up on the mental side could be a game changer. If not, he’s still a plug and play starter, but will just be serviceable.

Omar Speights — Very good awareness. Athletic. Disruptive and seems to force turnovers on film. Plays a little high at times.

Nathan Eldridge — Pretty huge to land a plug and play center. He had a major injury a few years ago, but I’ll take an AZ center with experience. Should be an anchor if he holds up.

Evan Bennett — Matre Dei pedigree, so you know he’ll be well coached in fundamentals. Nothing stands out on film either way and just looks like a solid football player. With a little bit of weight he can play DT and be disruptive there. Mid to high 3-star grade is warranted, and there’s upside.

Akili Arnold — Nice looking player on both sides of the ball. I think he can play RB if he gains 10lbs of muscle. Hits the hole quickly and decisively. Very good speed, though not elite. Probably breaks 40 and 50 yard runs, but might get chased down from behind at this level. On defense he doesn’t look as instinctual, but can be coached up to be serviceable there.

Jojo Forest — Good frame, adequate speed. Pretty good technique for a HS player. I think he’s ranked fairly. A mid-tier 3-star is about right.

Taron Madison – He’s our highest ranked recruit on most sites, but I’m not seeing anything special. 3-star is correct, but some downside here. I’m not sure where he ultimately plays, but to me his skill set looks best suited to CB or somewhere in the secondary. He can be better there than on offense.

James Rawls — Looks legit and disruptive. Power, speed, sheds opponents, makes plays. Why only a 2-star? Underrated prospect.

Kelsen Hennessy — Super weird film. He’s hurdling guys and guys bouncing off him, and he’s making tackles with both arms being held. Never saw anything like it. Weirdly intriguing player who kind of looks like the Ryan Nall of defense.

Jordan Whittley — Plays violently with aggression. A big high and upright. Very raw looking despite playing at a C.C. Needs coaching and technique to add to the brute force he got away with at lower levels. Some upside here.

Cory Stover — No strong feelings after watching his film. Pretty fast, not the most fluid guy. Could be a nice blocking TE who can occasionally catch passes. Could effectively sub on defense. Not a terrible signing. Not a game changer. The lowest three star possible seems about right, or a high 2 star.

**

Alex Austin — High 2 star. Reason being he’s a day late and dollar shot in his coverage and tackling. That could be poor coaching or poor instincts because he looks to have the tangibles. Needs coaching. Probably two years away from sniffing the field, and might be a nickle CB at best.

Ryan Franke — Has good speed. Could play DE and have some success.

Wynston Russell — Nothing stands out either way. Looks a bit thick to be playing in the secondary. Probably a practice squad player.

Simon Sandberg — No way this guy should be a 3-star. He’s slow and maladroit. We beat out football powerhouse Incarnate Word for him. The lone positive I see is he does have a motor and no give up. Smith probably saw some of himself in the guy and made an emotional offer here. Not Krebs, Pankey, or Cowdin level awful, but not too far off. Low 2-star. Rivals has him as our 6th best recruit. If that turns out to be true we’re hosed this class.

Anthony Gould — Small frame. Decent speed but not breakaway. There’s some ability here, but I’m thinking a move to CB might be better for him.

Rob Vanderlaan — Has a Pac-12 frame at age 17. I don’t see him ever starting, but he has something going for him. Needs to improve footwork and technique to get into the rotation. Could be a serviceable backup by year 3.

Jacob Ferenczi — Looks to play with heart and passion, but limited by his genetics. Doesn’t do anything especially well. A worse version of a Kevin Frahmn.

Michael Erhart — Clearly a very smart player given his offer sheet, but not much athletic ability. I can see him being a ST captain down the road and making some plays there. That has some value.

*

Thomas Sio — Huge, slow, bowling ball. Zero talent.

Put your opinions in writing — let me know why I’m wrong.

Nice class thanks to the transfers. Go Beavs.

  1. Really looking forward to seeing Nathan Eldridge on the field in orange and black. Certainly, he is plug and play, and in a position of severe need for the last couple seasons. Only question is his durability. An opportunity for Coach M and the S&C staff to shine.

OT: Some players in the AAF didn’t receive paychecks in the SECOND WEEK! Ummm…said to be, “just an administrative glitch”, but, there is this: …Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has provided the league with an extremely-necessary $250 million infusion of cash…

No word on any contribution by the gum chewer.

  2. You’d think Luton came back thinking he would actually play some. I bet we see both Luton and Gebbia quite a bit through the season.

  3. Cory Stover is from my area, seen him play more than a few times. Career special teams or transfer to PSU or equivalent. I’ll be surprised if he makes an impact at OSU. Nice kid though, hope he proves me wrong.

  4. OT, but previously discussed here. Phil’s Pfootwear Phails:

“Puma, which has pushed hard lately to make inroads into the basketball sneaker game, immediately seized on the opportunity to take a Twitter a jab at Nike, which Williamson was wearing.”

This after a nike shoe split in half at the start of NC-Duke game. Apparently the tweet by Puma was deleted once it was announced that Zion Williamson’s knee was injured in the incident.

    https://sports.yahoo.com/zion-williamson-leaves-duke-unc-game-early-slipping-breaking-shoe-half-022027213.html

    • ESPN was hyping that game up like crazy too. All eyes were on Duke/UNC, and specifically on Zion, and the dude’s shoe gives out on the first posession and causes him to injure his knee. How many lottery picks have been injured this year because of Nike shoes, so far? Zion, Bol Bol. Any others?

  5. Thanks for rankings, always enjoy these.

Offensive gains encouraging, adding a QB and C, w/existing RBs and receivers…

Impact players are needed on D, and sound tackling (via coaching) at every level of D.

The offense can put up points and help the D by putting them in favorable conditions, but the D needs significant improvements in talent and execution. Tisebar needs to show he can coach improvement to playetrs’ potentential and/or over achievement.

    • Blah, blah, talent, blah….

      It’s college football.

You are correct on the execution. If even quasi-D1 players unite as a team and execute a sound system properly, they can compete with anyone on any given day. Where talent comes in is beating the best on their best day… not just competing.

Let’s get to the former first. Then I think you’ll be surprised to find out how much talent we actually have.

      • Fuck that. It’s not about the money unless you make it about the money.

Sports should be able to choose their optimal gear. Optimal gear suppliers should be happy to comp optimal gear for marketing.

That being said, there’s not a sport out there where Nike is optimal.

We all know there’s a pre-teen slave laborer in Southeast Asia getting beat for this blowout.

What’s fascinating is that everyone’s acting like blowouts never happen. If you watch hoops, have played hoops or spend a lot of tie around people who spend a ot of time on hoops… you know blowouts, both acute and composite.

  6. I think you have Stover wrong.

I would add him to the list of DE frames already on the roster. McCartan, Garcia, Bickler, Bush, Sharpe… I would add Hamilcar… all young and have tangibles. Put some weight on here, teach some fundamentals there, and we have a program with various levels of development, sustaining itself because we take long, fast kids who can put two years of training to properly put on 50 pounds of trunk and shoulder weight.

While I don’t know what kind of a star system you would use to evaluate that kind of potential, Stover could be a three year starter with conference honors, or he could get injured and retire from football.

    • You have him higher than a 3-star?

I see some Slade Norris in him…but you can’t just assume he’ll be that, so I think low 3-star is fair.

      • I’m saying he’s perfect for a sustained program for his type of frame on the D side. I honestly don’t know how you would rate that. But he can put 50 pounds on that frame and play on the end with the tools he has. If he learns his hand-fighting and puts the weight on correctly, he could come out of nowhere. But it’s a project system. We’ll see where the others weigh in for the spring, then fall rosters. There were a lot of youngsters learning on the fly. This class will get time to develop, unless they’re needed. So even two years of developing your model positions from lumps of clay with that potential will be more beneficial than filling holes with what you got.

        As a TE… yeah… low 3*… maybe high 2*.

I call this my Gwacham argument.

          • You should stick to infantilizing yourself and Dumbshit and leave the hard work of spelling to those of us who actually care about accuracy, truth and honor.

Or maybe you can finally provide those awesome sciency numbers that are are so exact that you know more than people who have studied science all their lives.

    • I expect tomorrow will be a rainout also. The rain is supposed to continue here through tomorrow evening. Saturday and Sunday will be cold but playable.

    • Total beast.

Spring practice starts March 5th. I’m going to be traveling to CA that day and will be gone a week. Can you and OOB handle things that week?

      • Sure, one of us can start a new thread. I’m hoping to take in either the practice in Portland or the Spring game, depending on my schedule and weather.

        • At least you’re not getting pounded with 5″ of snow at least once a week. Our snow drifts in our parking lot are about 5′ tall and 15′ long and 4-5 ‘ deep. We’re supposed to get more snow this weekend too. So don’t complain to me about weather aka rain…I miss the rain.

  7. Hoping Gould can be a return specialist?

Maybe he’s one of those kids who slows down considerably with pads on, but broke 10.5 100 meter as a junior and sub 22 second 200 which is relatively elite speed for high school.

    • Gould is very fast, even wearing pads. He is short and relatively light — I would guess slot receiver/returner.

He played tailback in the game I saw and he did a pretty good job; he broke some long runs but also got some decent yards after contact.

  8. UCLA favored by 2 tonight. If the beavs get off to a hot start, they could run UCLA out of the building early. Don’t think they have much fight left in them.

    Beavs need a road split.

    • Road split for what?

With that crappy first half (again) last night, we need to win out for any shot at the dance. This year has been more frustrating to watch than mediocre years with mediocre talent. At least those kids played to their potentials.
