  1. Pretty nervous for the WBB Civil War game in Eugene. Supposed to be 12K people there, and based off what the Beavs did at Stanford (plus what UO did to Stanford), we could get beat by 50.

I like this team, but Rueck hasn’t figured out how to use Destiny Slocum’s energy for good – and she often slips into “baby deer” mode where she runs around wildly and eventually slips or makes a bad pass. McWilliams vanishes for whole games at times, Maddie Washington is overmatched in the post, and Goodman is streaky. Corosdale shows flashes of brilliance, but somehow hasn’t figured out how to score regularly. Only Pivec is consistently good, but she simply can’t do everything herself (though she tries).

I’d love to see the Beavs make a run for the Pac-12 title, but I can also see them dropping both games against UO and losing to one of the LA schools at home and maybe even ASU in Tempe – ending the season anywhere from 4-6 in the conference.

Hoping for the best, but fearing the worst.

    • Pivec and Slocum actually jump off the floor – perhaps a reason for Pivec’s numerous rebounds. I know Joanne Grymek is a big girl but she can’t seem to defy gravity for even half a second when she’s rebounding or shooting. I don’t see the Beavs winning either game.

  2. With as shitty as you make them sound, it’s a miracle Rueck has already won 20 games and is in line to take them to the tournament again. Thanks Eyore

    • Is this your first Warren called game? He’s pretty hard to listen to.
Is anybody else having problems with the audio stream buffering every 10 seconds or so? Really hard to listen to the game with so many interruptions. I may not last much longer.

      • Nah, I remember him from last year, but I’ve been listening a little closer this game. Maybe I just blocked out how bad he is.

No buffering for me, I’m getting him crystal clear, unfortunately.

        • Signal strength for the audio is fine for me; quality of Warren’s broadcast not so much.

I realized it is Spring Training even for broadcasters, but there is a trend with Warren. So far, he has said Zak Taylor went to HS in Salem and has gone extended periods without giving basic info such as the out count or baserunners locations. With any luck, Big Jim will join him for some games; always fun to hear Jim school Jon W. in a very gentlemanly way.

    • Too early to say. I do think that some are underestimating the loss of six starters from the lineup. for this season. If this team does not even make the playoffs then maybe you look at the coaching?

    • The talent lost will make it hard to know if we can blame a drop off in quality of play on talent or coaching, if we’re comparing to last season. Hopefully the rumors of Casey coming back in a year or 2 are accurate. Guy who told me he is just stepping back for a bit to allow Bailey to draw a better salary and retire more comfortably, also told me Casey didn’t want to be getting in the way of coaching the team while his son is playing.(the anti-Tinkle model?)

Either way, ideally Casey will return within the next 2 seasons and hopefully they are able to sell that when recruiting so we dont see a drop off in talent long term.

    • They’ll make the tourney. But probably won’t be a top 8 seed unless some of the new guys really step up. The new guys were all top prospects coming in, just had 1st rounders in front of them.

  3. Yeah, not a good first game for the baseball team…

Batting .056 through first six innings, down 4-0 to the Lobos. Adley leaves bases loaded with one out in the 5th.

  4. This announcer is terrible.
-In an excited voice* “Finally a fly ball to left field!”

He’s been waiting all game for a fly ball to left?

  5. The good – they won. Hopefully shows them how much they need to work to be a top team. Walked more than struck out. No errors.

    The bad –
New starters had poor at bats. New bench guys saved the game.

    The ugly
Abel still has walk issues. Cut down on those and he’ll be pac12 pitcher of the year.

  6. SOLD OUT !
That’s the headline on the Beavs athletic site now, stating that OSU is the only PAC12 team to sell out a men’s and women’s game this season.

Gonna take WBB’s best in these two CW’s…….and, maybe (No,probably), an off night or two by the opponent. Could happen.

    • Maybe Rueck and Tinks signed off on the promotion just to get butts in seats. I can buy everything Tinks said in the last week about having a crowd behind you if he passed on his marginal sales to prove his point. That would be putting your money where your mouth is.

  7. WBB at the half, Beavs down 4.
KT contributing tonight, could be big if she keeps it up. Goodman 10 pts and Jo being left alone early. Beavs lead in rebounds by 2.
Long way to go, lets see how the second half begins……..and ends.

Speaking earlier of announcers, I really enjoy Ron Callen’s work on radio.

  8. Final: Beavs 68, ucks 77
Three shot clock violations by Beavs in 2nd half, Points off of TO’s: Beavs 6, ucks 15

Probably KT.s best game this season, Jo 12 points/5 rebs.
Many didn’t expect Beavs to keep it this close, bodes well for Monday?

  9. Ladies lose by 9. Was closer but either way. Not enough to take down the Ionescues.
Btw, does Ann Schatz have a hard-on for Ionescu or what?
Similar to how she called the game last year, her lady crush is pretty evident.

    • Its not just her, all the espn and pac12 announcers have lady boners for her. She does have good games but i dont think shes as good as that gal from Uconn a few years ago.

      • Ionescu is great as a shooter, but she pushes the defender with her off arm consistently and carries the ball whenever she changes direction. As long as she gets those advantages, she will be POY. I haven’t watched the Duck women’s team this year, but their offense is based on the high hand-off combined with a subtle moving pick. No different than the wide recievers holding on the outside runs in football to me. It is another form of letter vs spirit of the rule. They push the letter and break the spirit of the rule. I don’t like it.

Nonetheless, if the Beavs can hit some 3’s on monday and rebound, they can win the rematch. Ducks again are anointed for their post-season run, and I hope they come up short again as is their habit in Eugene.

        • I see we have a negative voting sabrina disciple in our midst.

Seems to me it will take improvement in the TO area along with the better 3pt shooting you’ve mentioned.
10 TO’s for the Beavs is 2.3 better than the season average, but ucks 3 TO’s compares with 9.3 for opponents this season; leading to a 9pt deficit when you look at pts off of TO’s.

Rebounding was actually close tonight, 31-30 in ucks favor.

Did anyone expect Jo G to be so open and to score 12?

          • Meh…

People like to hate on great players, focusing on their faults and ignoring their immense assets. They do the same to Brady with everything. I’ve even heard someone say that one of his faults was that he grew up in California, as if that’s why he’s not to be considered one of the greatest QBs in history.

        • I’ll give Brady a lot of credit for the talent that he is, but for me his stats will always get an asterisk for the organization of cheating he is a part of. We know they cheated, they were caught cheating, and we just don’t know how much Bellichick and crew cheated to obtain playbooks of the opposing teams as the NFL was quick to punish the Patriots and the sweep it under the rug. The coaching staff knowing the other team’s defensive strategies via mic’d locker rooms etc helps Brady’s game albeit even if indirectly. Similar to Barry Bonds, lots of talent, but will always be mired in controversy.

      • If you can beat her team, go ahead and do it. While I also object to the game boiling down to promoting just one player (like ESPN did with Trae Young… hoo boy), it’s not an insult to you or me or anyone but her teammates. The reason they’re a good team is two-fold: she’s a great leader, and the rest of Nikegon’s team are good or great players.

Beat them, and it doesn’t matter what sort of over-promotion the announcers do. The audience knows what it sees.

And mute is always an option.

  10. Thoughts (after celebrating) direct from Surprise:

-Pitching may or may not be better than last year but the down-tick in being able to put the bat on the ball will be a consistent challenge.

-No obvious diminution on defense; outfield D may be the best yet.

-OSU may have been a little lackadaisical early on but so was the fan base. No “lets go Beav-ers” chant until the 8th inning.

-No Casey pacing out in front of the dugout, I now realize the strength of that intensity.

-Speaking of intensity, the NM squad really brought it today. Even their bullpen was into it when something good happened for the Lobos. Upshot: Beavs will get everyone’s best effort as defending champs. No OSU team has faced that challenge in a decade.

Over and out from (sometimes) sunny AZ

  11. Surprise from Surprise. Went down again to escape the polar vortex. Thoughts…
Beav’s were lucky to get the win. The last run scored by NM could have been prevented.
Eisert had a play at the plate but went to first with the ball. A couple of the players dads were standing next to me seemed to agree. That run seemed to be the dagger, but some magic happened again.
The starter for the Lobos pitched his ass off. Really impressive and was throwing 95 on the gun. He made our hitters look pretty bad, including the CWS MOP.
It really struck home how much we lost from last year when they took the field. This is a whole new team, so expect some struggles. Infield D will not be the same, at least for a while.
Abel was off today. Could not throw first pitch strikes and he seemed to be frustrated with the zone.
Fastball was 90-91, so no bump in velocity from last year.
Philip, the new SS has great and accurate arm. Throws effortlessly.
Malone made the play of the game with a diving catch going to his right, saving a double to to wall.
These early games favor teams with deep pens as they build up the stamina of the starters, so that was the difference in this game and the second one with my Gophers and the Zags.
Yeskie was watching the second game and told me Sam Tweedt will start game three.
Zags starter was a stud. Threw 96 early and never under 93 with his FB. They followed him with this little lefty who threw 67 mph. He struck out three straight!
Too bad it is not Rodent vs Rodent in game two. It would have been a pitching rematch of game two of last years Super Regional. Gophers won late 8-5.

  12. Game 2 lineup.

    CF – Preston Jones
    3B – Jake Dukart
    C – Adley Rutschman
    RF – Tyler Malone
    SS – Beau Philip
    DH – Alex McGarry
    1B – Zak Taylor
    LF – Joe Casey
    2B – Andy Armstrong

    Fehmel on the mound.

  13. Crazy how solid and consistent Fehmel has been over the years — overshadowed by Heimlich, but knows how to grind. He’s got to have some pretty solid career stats at OSU, wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in the top ten in wins.

  14. 6-1 Beavs in the 7th……

Jon Warren is fucking horrible. I don’t generally listen to his women’s BB or high school broadcasts. Maybe baseball just isn’t his thing to broadcast? He’s gotten the score incorrect, the number of outs incorrect, count incorrect and even called an out on a ground ball error. And that’s just off the top of my head. And I didn’t tune in until the 4th inning.

    What. The. Fuck.

I’m calling a civil war loss tonight. Not confident in these jokers after last weekend. Save for Boulder the ducks are better with Wooten back. Hope I’m wrong.

    • I have never heard Jon broadcast the Beavs WBB. Ron Callan does those broadcasts, and does a good job IMHO.

As for the MBB CW, I’d say a loss is likely but am not a certain as you.

  15. Philip and McGarry are instant big time players on this team. Dukart is pretty damn good too.

Hopefully Preston Jones, Zak Taylor, and Andy Armstrong get it going soon. 0 hits among them.

    • Not worried about Armstrong and to a lesser extent, Taylor, as they’ve both hit. Jones sample size is much smaller and he’s the unknown.

  16. So anyone hurd if tinkle is injured and not playing tonight? Hurd a rumor he may played minimally tonight and might be held out the rest of the year due to reinjuring ankle depending on how his injury responds tonight. I hope my source is wrong but this came from a source within the team……

  17. Kelly Graves, as quoted in the RedGuard:

“The people that were here were here to see a basketball game. We didn’t give any tickets away. We didn’t have any promotion where you buy a cup of coffee and get a ticket.

“These people wanted to be here, and that’s pretty cool.”

Always thought Graves was a class guy, is this out of line?

BTW, there is this tweet from GoBeavs as of this morning: Oregon has returned tickets from their allotment that will be made available at the @Gill_Coliseum ticket office, starting at 5:30 tonight. #gobeavs

  18. Reporting from Surprise:

-Fehmel showed great control, only 3 truly hard hit balls one of which left the field. Zags otherwise had trouble making contact as reflected in two dozen lazy fly ball outs.

-As reported yesterday, outfield D was again superb and IF D showed promise.

-Tomorrow vs Gophers will be the strongest test and a good measuring stick vs last years team.

    Over and out from AZ

  19. Ducks going full court press from the start of the game. Curious if they have enough bodies to keep that up for an entire game. Could see them wearing down in the 2nd half.
Beavs need to keep it close at halftime

  20. I don’t understand basketball. Saw defender running into the player with the ball on two occasions, and no call. I suppose you can chest bump a bit but these were full speed run ins. Whatever!

  21. Watching the Pac 12 Network stream… Pretty much all the commercials are women’s basketball promotions for the network. Are there no sponsors?

  22. How does Kelly miss that point blank dunk attempt?
5 pt swing for the ducks, followed by the botched lob attempt to Kelly by the Beavs. We just cant play with a lead, can we?

  23. Solid solid win. Broke the press pretty much 100%. Should’ve won by more if guys hit free throws.

Oregon just doesn’t have the go to guy to win consistently. Once they were down in the second, half their team quit.

    • Always good to get a Civil War win, even better to sweep, but I hate to see how hard we all celebrate when the MBB has a good weekend, because I know it means we will come into the next weekend over confident and undo any progress made.
It’s great to be in 2nd place, but there’s so much season left, they really need to focus on winning 2 in LA next week.

      • I’m viewing them as an NIT team, which is okay given the sad state lately. Though, this is the best talent we’ll have for some time as far as I can tell, and it seems we’re not going to capitalize fully on it.

I’m concerned about next year when all the four star coaches son’s are gone. Might get rough again. Enjoying this while it lasts. The Conference tourney should have some stakes and drama.

        • Only Stevie is guaranteed to be gone(4 years up).
Tres could still come back since he redshirted his freshman year, but I was also told that JUCO forward we offered recently was being told they view him as Tres’ replacement.
Ethan still has 2 years eligibility.
And we do have a pretty solid pure scorer coming in, in Jarod Lucas.
If we only lose Stevie and Big G, and let Ethan play his role, while allowing Vernon to play point. Lucas could be that scorer we need Reichle to be.
One more year of Kelley will be nice, and we will finally get to see what Payton Dastrup can do(was a 4* BYU commit out of hs with a pretty good offer sheet. https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Payton-Dastrup-22654/RecruitInterests/ )

To me, Tres is the key for next year. If he’s back, this could be a pretty good team next year. If he leaves, we’re going to struggle.

          • To me, it really felt like the momentum shifted tonight when Vernon played point in the 2nd half. He made good decisions. Handled the trap well. Made a few open shots when the offense bogged down. He just doesn’t have those mental lapses that we’re so used to seeing from Beaver teams. Hopefully he earned more PT down the stretch with his performance tonight.

          • Although looking at the box score, i must have mistaken one of Hollins shots for Vernon. Vernon only scored 2 pts.(but they were nice points!)

        • One would think they will be decent next year as long as TT stays. The year after that will be the interesting one. Ethan will be the only coaches son left as a senior. Tinkle has not developed any talent, in fact I think there have been more transfers out then anything else under his tenure.

          • Tres isn’t going pro. He’s not on any draft boards or prospect lists. He’ll be back next year. He’ll probably declare for the draft to get feedback from the NBA. That’s normal. Stj did it last year and withdrew.

          • I always thought there was a good chance with Eubanks, remember he flirted with it after his sophomore season too. STj also declared after his soph season too if I remember correctly. I am no expert, but my eyeball test tells me that Tinkle is a great college player who does not have the overall athleticism for the NBA.

  24. Surprise game two….
Femmel was his classic self. Threw strikes, stayed ahead most of the time, and pitched to contact.
No added velocity on the fastball. Yeskie must love this kid as he is the model of consistency.
Gave up the gopher ball (I like that term) but shrugged it off and one hit them over eight.
AR crushed his homer to dead center. Went 430-440.
Bats came alive. McGarry has looked good. Beau Philip has some wheels.
Frosh pitcher Joey Mundt came in for the ninth. Walked the first guy which sent two guys sprinting to the pen. He gave up a couple runs, but settled down and closed it out. He got lots love from his teammates in the line, Bryce in particular was all over him like he just won the CWS.
Pat Casey is here. He was hiding in the far reaches of the outfield. He was pacing around and seemed like an addict waiting for his fix. I would be shocked if he does not come back. I wonder if this will be more stressful for him as he obviously has all the emotional investment , but NO control over things?
Should have watched the CW. New Mexico kicked the shit out of my Gophers. They have a pretty nice team.

  25. Rodent Rematch from last years Super….
Like da Beavs, the Gophs lost a ton from last year. Similarities:
33 year tentured asst HC retired
Friday night starter drafted and signed.
    All American SS gone
Only the catcher and first baseman are returning starters from last year. They lost a bunch of multi year starters from last year. Sound familiar?
Coaches are high on the youngsters, so we will see. Looked good Friday and bad last night.
Starter is a Soph who was decent in spots last season. Lots of young arms.
I hope for a close game so I get to see Adley bat against closer Max Meyer. He was awesome last year and was the closer on the College All Star team that Adley played on. He closed 7 of their 8 games. He was sitting at 97 and hit 98 a few times Friday night. Must see TV! He has a wipeout slider. They are also DH’ing him. 165 lb’s but has lightning in the R arm.
May the best Rodent win! Go Beavs.

Oh yeah…. Pat Casey will coach today!

For the Gophers. We also have one. How do you like that!

    • It was a rematch. It was regional. It sure wasn’t super.
Started out interesting, but a couple of poor fundamental plays help set the table for Adley and it was over. McGarry and Philip apprear to be the real deals. Tweedt pitched well and Burns was smoking in fastballs at 94 mph. Burns just missed giving up a homer to the first batter he faced. A couple mishaps in the outfield including a reprise of the Arkansas, let’s let a fly ball drop right between three guys who could make the play, helped pad the score. Bats came alive the last two days.
New Mexico looks like the second best team here, so we will see what happens tomorrow. Lots of arms available tomorrow.

  26. the duckies baseball game vs Texas Tech has been canceled today because it is chilly outside. Not snowing or raining, just a little cold. The high in Lubbock today is supposed to be 37 degrees.

  27. Bruce Bochy will retire after this year as manager of the SF Giants

I heard an interview with Pat Casey last summer and when asked if he’d consider MLB he made a comment like “I don’t think Bochy is leaving the Giants anytime soon”.

So in addition to wondering if Casey will decide to come back to OSU next year, now who knows he could also be looking for a call from the Giants.

      • Finally able to listen to a game. It seems to me Bailey is using more players and moving them around more in early days than Casey did.

As for complaining about John Warren – I think Beavs are the only team in the tournament with a play by play announcer. I haven’t fact checked but it occurs to me that OSU, in this busy sports time of year, is unique in having announcers for mbb, wbb, and baseball.

  28. 5-0 Beavs, 3 outs left.

Beavs have loaded the bases at least 3 times, by my count, but have only turned that into 2 runs. I haven’t been listening to the full game though, but looks like they have 12 left on base today.

  29. Listening to WBB – wondering if those of you who are watching have noticed a common complaint re: Ionescu carrying the ball when she changes direction and pushing off with her free hand.

    • Just got back from the game and gotta say that OSU’s length could be a big factor in the post season. However, another big factor could be the continued dribbling, picking up the dribble and then getting stuck. Gotta have better ball movement. I like the look of potentially playing either Grymek and Maddie or Morris at the same time. Taya seems to be in a funk shooting and rebounding. I don’t what the issue is but with Morris’ much improved play, she could work herself out of a starting role. If Rueck can get her going again, that Beavs could be very dangerous in the post season. If she doesn’t get going, I still think the Beavs have serious length and skilled guard play to give teams lots of trouble especially with the defense of Grymek, Morris, Washington, et al.

Fun game to watch despite some of the ugly turnovers. Thoroughly enjoyed Ionescu turning over the ball at the end.

      Great weekend for the Beavs.

  30. Fuck, Beavers lead in most every major category, except turnovers…100% FT shooting was sure money at the end. Would have been fun to be there.

    • It was lots of fun although I didn’t have reserved seat tix and got there late so had to sit in the nose bleed section but the atmosphere was electric.

  31. Great win for the ladies. Seems destined for the #3 seed for the pac12 which is fine. Ducks will be on the opposite side of the bracket. All three top teams have a great chance of winning out and the Beavs don’t own any of those tiebreakers.

The good – Rueck adjusted his offense to have Slocum play off the ball more. Worked really well. Morris has stepped up her game. Can see she’s still raw but she’s progressing faster than predicted. Gyrmek is playing as well as anyone hoped in her extended minutes. Team free throw shooting.

The bad – Turnovers. The shot clock violations are the worst.

The ugly – When Morris and Grymek were out of the game, Rueck was forced to go to a smaller lineup and they were outmatched.

Something is off with Corosdale. She should be the 2nd or 3rd leading scorer on the team. Seems very hesitant to take shots.

  32. How much more would Grymek contribute if she could keep a grip on the ball? Ionescu’s travel call couldn’t have come at better time – she was not happy.

    • I love that play as Ionescu assumed a pressure free inbound and Goodman played possum until Ionescu’s head was turned. Good play by Aleah and total lapse in concentration by Ionescu.

    • And did Sabrina flop at the end on her last shot? Our seats are at the corner opposite end of the court and there was a lot of excitement and running around on the court but seems like Sabrina flopped at the end her stroke trying to draw a foul call. Was that my imagination or a holdover from the other times I saw her flop?

  33. I loved it when Pivic took the charge from SI toward the end of the game. Ionescu barked at the ref like she entitled to run over anyone at anytime. You could see Pivic set her up and then as soon as the shoulder hit her chest you knew it had to be a charge call. It was beautiful to see the reaction from Ionescu. She was obviously very frustrated most of the night.

    • I don’t follow this stuff very closely, can someone explain how the NCAA metric they’re using to tank teams, will be used when the selection committee makes the brackets?
Oregon State at 16-8 overall (8-4 in conference) is ranked #85
Oregon, at 15-10 overall(6-6 in conference with 2 losses to OSU) is ranked #69
Colorado, at 16-9 overall(7-5 in conference with home loss to OSU) is ranked #73

Is this ranking system supposed to replace RPI this year? And how the f is Oregon State so far below these 2 teams with similar or worse records, plus losses in all head-2-head matchups?

      https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa-mens-basketball-net-rankings

          • I don’t get it either. Look at San Francisco. In a weaker conference than the Pac-12 or maybe some argue equal. 16-6 record. Wins over Cal and Stanford. Game against Arizona State postponed. No other big wins. Close loss to Buffalo. Net rating of…………….52.

I see Houston has a net rating of 4. So do they get a 1 or 2 seed? Washington has a net rating of 31. I’d assume then they would get into tourney no matter the outcome of the conference tourney but I keep hearing the pac-12 is a 1 bid conference. It’s too bad the year 2019 is a year when being top 4 or so in conference doesn’t get you into the tourney.

  34. I’m half watching the 2016 Civil War football game. It struck me, we’ve swept Oregon in baseball the last 2 years, including mid week games. Adley Rutschman is 10-0 against Oregon in baseball and 1-0 in football.
