Home Football Takeaways from Saturday

Takeaways from Saturday

Some big picture takeaways:

  • Those of us who want to see Gebbia start will have to wait. Luton had a good game (even though it was against a glorified HS team), and it probably buys him two bad games.
  • We’re four deep at RB. I thought we were only 3 deep, but Tyler and Baylor both look like serviceable players. Baylor is a guy I didn’t have much confidence in, but he was nifty. Earned a few carries vs better teams.
  • The defense looked improved. I know it was essentially a HS team, but still, the discipline and staying home on the option stood out. Getting a few turnovers and sacks was good to see. Tisebar hot seat: 3.5/10, down from a 4.5 last week.
  • Confidence. This might the biggest one. Winning is contagious, and seeing your work pay off makes you work harder.
  • Flemings — promising as a 2nd option, but I’m not completely sold yet. I can see him getting creamed in conference play. On the flipside, Irish was disappointing. He gave up on the punt return, dropped some passes, and didn’t do much with his opportunity vs a bad team. The guy you want to see step up is Taylor. Flemings as a slot/WR3 makes more sense. Bradford’s return should solve this problem, too, and give a legit #2.
  • Musgrave — he might eat into Togia’s time. Smith has seemed frustrated with Togia, saying he’d like to get him more balls but he “has to catch them”. Musgrave looked more like a natural pass catcher. Togia with 3 catches but didn’t look very natural doing it.
  • Solid play calling. After a terrible game vs Hawaii, BL had a good game calling plays.
  • Good time for a bye. Stanford should get a tough game from Oregon. With their newfound confidence and needed rest the Beavs should have a shot.

What stood out to you?

  1. Number #1 here and more importantly in your hearts as a Beaver legend.

Not going to rehash the game. It speaks for itself. I will say that Coach Smith showed class and respect to Cal Poly by ending the game on the 15 yard line with more than a minute left on the clock.

The kids, coaches and players on the other sideline work just as hard every week, as do the Beavs.

There is no reason to add insult to injury as was done to Nevada last week in Eugene.

    • Smith’s class was also shown in the good sportsmanship shown by his players. TV showed, without emphasis, several examples.

Not clear if this was due to those 1/2 game suspensions getting the teams attention or if the score/level of the opponent caused guys to take the high road.

  2. Nice to see LB’s getting more tackles; especially expecting more of that from McCarten who looks like a keeper to me.
But, what’s up with Colletto? Banged up? Thought he showed real potential at LB but was a no show yesterday.

A quote I like, from AP when asked if he prepared himself for a larger role in the absence of Jefferson:
“I always prepare myself the same way,” Pierce said. “When my number’s called, it’s on me.”

      • Thanks, buddy. Glad he was used, in previous game he laid some nice blocks.
Still, seems a waste of a really hard nosed player to not give him more downs on D even if not needed in the goal line Offense.

  3. Still (I think) only one turnover in 3 games and the one was something of a fluke. This gives our feet a chance to heal from all the shots they’ve taken in the past.

  4. I honestly think there’s not much to take away from this game. Facing a one dimensional team with lesser athletes, not much to learn. Nice to see a convincing win though. Probably would have been a bigger win had Jefferson played.

Hard to see Flemings keeping up that kind of production in conference play. He’d dominate fcs if he had gone that route.

Hodgins still looks like a dominate wr. We’ll see how he produces when double teamed in conference play.

Gebbia looked fine. Int was fluky. Luton played like he should have vs a lesser team. He extended his leash a little longer.

Not much to take away on defense, still issues tackling which will hurt big time going forward.

Good time for a bye with guys banged up.

Team needs the stars to be healthy to be competitive in games.

  5. One thing I took away is that Pierce is a beast. Given that he does not have that many college carries, I would think that he’s on some NFL teams radar. Smith is lucky he has Pierce because he overused Jefferson against Hawaii. I hope Jefferson has the type of injury that is healed in two weeks.

  6. Scheduling “real” teams prior to conference play also has the negative of injuries. In two games we lost Gumps and Eldridge plus others. Parker read a list of injuries a mile long before the game yesterday. I don’t ever remember the Beavs being deep in any position. So you take your thin layered team, fresh off break team and you put them against big Oakies and Polynesians . Makes no since at all. All non conference games should be Cal Poly types. I know this has been said already for other reasons but I’ve notice year after year the injuries caused in these no win games.

  7. This team is capable of winning 4 of 5 of the winnable games (Stanford, UCLA, Cal, ASU, and UA). That would be the high expectation as each week progresses. Taking 3 of 5 would be expected if O and D play average games. Lots could change though with the injuries. Would love to see 3 more wins with at least 3 more going down to the wire.

    • Arizona imposed their will on Michigan State in the 4th quarter. Something like 20 straight runs to score and try to run out the clock. If they keep that game plan OSU has no chance.

    • USC also looks like it will be a competitive game as well. I still hold out hope for the following:

Stanford: W in a close one
      UCLA: W
Utah: L and hoping for a 17 pt or less loss
      CAL: toss up
Arizona: W in a close one
Washington: hope we don’t lose by 25+
ASU: W in a close one due to it being home game in November
@WSU: L hoping we don’t lose by 17+ in this game
@CW: hoping we keep it close for 2 quarters and then don’t lose by more than 17+

We need to play average to perfect the rest of the way out to win any more games. if we play less than average against the “close W games” I’ve picked, then it’s a really long season and we’ve taken a step backwards this year.

  8. takeaways:

    (1) The non-conference schedule was perfectly inverted from the way it should have been booked: Cal Poly, Hawaii, Oklahoma State. I guess the Hawaii game was when it should have been, but you get my point. More administrative mismanagement of the football program, which if you think about it, has been the real problem all along. There hasn’t been a true interview process since Riley was hired, and not following the program then, I’m not sure it was an open process then either. OSU got luck with Dennis and that locked in the paradigm.

    (2) play calling was fresh, innovative, hard to guess in advance, with one notable exception. First possession, second half: after the second down play the result was third and short. OSU lined up quickly, but if you follow Beav football you simply know what’s coming: a quick inside handoff to the back. I said to my buddy; Cal Poly knows what’s coming this will be stopped. which it was: just absolutely stoned, for a loss. Luton signaled to the bench “let’s go for it on 4th down” but Smith punted. Last we saw of Luton which leads to:

    (3) Gebbia’s TD run. One of the more exciting plays since Garretson ran for a TD to win a game in overtime a couple years back. Shows what a truly mobile QB could do. Luton had precisely the same kind of opportunity in the first half; same position on the field, only heading to the south end zone. He pulled up and tried a pass, but it was incomplete. Beavs scored eventually but, again, you get my point.

    (4) post game overreaction (to borrow from Big Red Overreaction; man I miss those days with Nebraska fans pulling their hair out); anyway–the win was nice, and Stanford does look vulnerable, with a game to play in the meantime vs. Oregon. But think about it: if Stanford wins at home vs. Oregon (and they seem to be in Oregon’s head, historically), no one will think they can’t take care of business in Corvallis. If they lose, does anyone think Shaw is going let them mail one in vs. OSU? I don’t. Probably still looking at a two-win season, and a win late vs. a team that’s not going to be bowl eligible looks like a better scenario. UCLA might actually be in that situation when we see them.

    (5) Trivia question: when’s the last time OSU won two in a row? Hint: GA was coach

    • I actually like this years schedule. Digression of competition might lend to more confidence heading into the so called, “tune-up game” with Cal Poly. You don’t learn anything about how well you are doing by playing Cal Poly first. You do by playing tougher/stiffer competition first. Okie State is not Ohio State, but it’s not Hawaii either. Okie State is a top 3 team in their conference we’re in the bottom of our conference. We played them well in 2 1/2 to 3 quarters. Hawaii, the team played a really good half. then imploded on offense once Eldridge went down. Now that they were able to fine tune what they needed to on offense and defense in a game type situation, this game will lend to better play on defense and trust with the coaching staff in game planning. I have a lot more faith in Tibesar than I did earlier this season. They adjusted in game vs waiting until halftime in this game. It wasn’t a major tweak, it was a minor one. Switching from man to man to zone defense shows they recognize the need to be able to play both man to man and zone coverage depending upon the team they’re playing. This is way more promising in adapting within the game instead of saying, “We’re a man coverage defense.” He has demonstrated, “We’re a defense that is what our team needs us to be and not set in a certain set on defense.”

  9. Kee Whetzel posts on twitter:
“I’m going through a situation where the football portion of my life could be put on pause,” he wrote. “… Hopefully I will be back sooner rather than later but at this time it’s really up in the air.”

He makes clear that an injury is NOT involved.

    • On the topic of this post, Angry asks what stood out to me. Is it fair to say Flemings robbed Luton of his first INT of the season? Watching that play live, he under threw Flemings, right into the DB’s hands, and Flemings slowed up and reached out and somehow stole it.

Also. Was nice to see the bench get some time. We played the 2nd string OL for most of the 4th quarter. Was good to get those guys reps. We’ll need them.

Also, was there a play where we sent an OLineman out wide as a receiver? I’d have to go back and find a replay. Pretty sure it was one of the guys with a jersey number in the 60’s. Kipper? Gray? Did anybody else see what happened?

      • Kipper. Showed a look that opponents will have to spend time considering.

And, yes, it’s fair to say Flemings robbed Luton of his first INT of the season! Check Ron Callan’s tweet where he speaks with Champ, very humble little guy who certainly plays BIG.

    • Thanks for the clip, Angry. The demographics of higher ed are bad, as indicated in this report, but the bloom is off a higher ed degree which is even more important though not given as much visibility because it strikes to the heart of how colleges see themselves.

The sales pitch, which worked without fail in the decades after WW II, was that a college degree resulted in a huge, positive differentiation in lifetime earnings potential for college graduates over high school grads. But as an article in the Wall Street Journal recently pointed out, adjusted for inflation college grads average annual income has remained flat since 2000. While at the same time the cost of a degree has risen three times the rate of inflation. This is probably a function of globalization. College grads now routinely take jobs that used to go to high school grads. Your local barista or waiter would be good examples.

  10. OT – USC next hosts Utah, then travels to UW and Notre Dame…so they could be looking at going 0-3 in that stretch. UCLA is also down right now.

I saw an article in S-I (I know, I’m the only one who scans it anymore) a week or two ago, and they were writing about when would “proud programs” – USC among them – return to prominence. so annoying the media wants to prop up tropes. Who cares if a previous “power” isn’t dominant? Teams make bad hires. Who DESERVES to be a story? Whose been creative? Does it take away from the game if UW is playing more competently and consistently than USC for example?

That got me thinking that USC hasn’t really been that relevant since “Cheatin’ Pete” Carrol, and they weren’t particularly relevant before him for some time. Their story is always blue collar athletes and unfulfilled potential, which describes a number of programs. They haven’t been remarkable as a team in some time. Same with UO after Chip (also a cheater) and then Helfrich (winning with Chip’s players), has become a mid bowl tier team….

Back on topic: OSU’s D will fare poorly in league play. There’s been too many injuries, too little depth to begin with, and the wrong players for a 3-4. It will get ugly again, and the offense won’t be able to offset the D.

The challenge for the coaching staff will be keeping players involved and not letting them accept losing. That will be tough with the “Bystander D.”

    Enough rambling…

  11. Unsustainable indeed. Like so much else.

Gotta love the Josh Allen story. Coaches protested they didn’t take note because he “didn’t go to any of the camps.” Seems he didn’t go to camps because he had to work on his family’s farm.

      • If you’re the #18 team in the country and can’t put up more than 7 points in nearly an hour of play at home against ASU, you pretty much deserve to lose…so meh.

        • I actually disagree. You’re not going to have your best effort every game. Sometimes this just happens. It doesn’t mean you deserve a ref blowing the game for you.

          • The kicker blew the game, the offense blew the game, 12 men on the field blew the game (maybe since it was only for the tie), the ref missed a call that would have given another chance but was not the reason kicker shanked kick.

          • The kicker shanked it because an ASU player leaped over his line’s back and got in the kicker’s face. Watch the replay.

I understand the argument, but teams don’t play their A game each week. We had Beavs complaining about an offensive PI call vs Hawaii costing us the game, and that was in the 3rd quarter not the final play. There would be outrage if that happened on the final play in a Beav game. Doubt people would be saying we didn’t deserve to win. Just like players don’t have their best games every week, neither do refs, so there is that, and I think that is a better argument. The problem is there are two refs standing right in front of the guy who leaped and looking right at him. Since this is a Pac-12 crew that missed an obvious call to it’s conferences’ advantage, it’s a bad look for the sport. We’ve had PAC ref issues forever. They seem to be the worst refs in all of college football. Instead of paying players, the NCAA should pay for real refs.

Also, why did ASU “deserve to win”? They played like ass, too. Again, that argument falls apart. The team that deserved to win is the one with the most points on the board after a properly called game. We didn’t get that. Maybe we need “ref review” in the booth on every play.

          • Stinking up the field for 60 minutes at home as a favorite and then blaming a bad call for your loss is weak. Might have a little merit but still weak.

          • I only read a few articles, but I never heard them blame it for their loss. I did hear them blame it for not getting another chance to tie the game. And that’s correct.

Both offenses were bad (or both D’s were great. Either way). Their D gave up 10 points — how is that “stinking”? “Stinking” for 60 minutes is not a valid argument here. We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. The PAC zebras ruined another outcome, and in this case, a team’s season. In general I don’t like to blame refs for outcomes because it’s a long game with time to overcome calls and generally these things even out, but in this case coming down to the final play and staring right at the play, I think they’re at fault. Case by case thing for me.

Ps. This game always comes to mind as the pinnacle of bad referring. Were the Ducks the better team who deserved to win??

  12. OT: For anyone that gets BTN, they have a segment with Urban Meyer where he breaks down something about football. It is easy to see why he has been so successful as a coach. He is excellent at explaining things in a concise and very understandable manner. He is a good teacher which is a huge part of being a successful coach.

  13. Not alot of high scores this week in the Pac12 pool play. I personally got killed.
OneOldBeav lead everybody with 8 correct picks, congrats OOB!

AKBeaver has moved into first place overall. You’ve been pretty consistently at or near the top ever week so far. What’s your secret??

Will try to get the new games up today. anybody have any suggestions for the Non-Pac 12 games? Does any matchup look interesting?

  14. -Luton looked like a marginal QB in that game to me. I was only able to watch the first half but I focused on his eyes hoping to see if he scanned progressions at all against a lower level team. The answer is he did not. Eight of his first 10 throws were to Hodgins and he didn’t look at a single receiver aside from Isiah. Many of the balls Hodgins caught he out-athleted the DB. Those balls would have been batted down or picked against power 5 competition. Luton tore up JC college. He would be a great FCS QB. At the power 5 level he is a backup at best.

-I’m rooting for Champ. He has a great story, Seems to be a great kid. I’m 99% sure he would be a FCS all American. If he’s going to be on the field as a WR then it seems he’d be better served with some Jet sweeps and screens and slants. Where Luton locates his passes it’s going to be difficult for Champ to be effective.

Before I get trashed from the Luton fan club I have an honest question: Has he ever hit a receiver in stride? For a 6’7″ “Big Armed” qb I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone who always under throws go routes. Garretson threw probably a 5x better deep ball. Luton basically allows 0 chance of run after catch. This is the hidden stat that the people who love his completion percentage will never understand, and it will result in field goals over touchdowns and less chances to win. And again: I was a give Luton a shot and see if it clicked guy but unfortunately he is who he is.

    • All your luton stuff is spot on. All add that in spring and fall camp we were told luton was better then last year. It’s not true, I’ve seen no improvement at all.

Oh, he did check down once to peirce. I rewound the tv to make sure I wasnt seeing thing but he did go through a progression and then kicked it out to him on a delay out of the backfield, so at least once in 55 tries this season he hase done it.

      • Luton has no touch on screen passes. He has one throwing speed…Rifle. Gebbia seemed to have touch on this throws. I’m not so sure Luton will cost us wins, or if he’ll cost us opportunities. I agree him and Champ would tear up the FCS ranks, but clearly this team is just that, a top FCS team at the moment in talent level. This is not a D1 power 5 nor a Group of 5 talent level team.

      • Didn’t that first TD fit exactly with his analysis?

        https://twitter.com/Pac12Network/status/1173432316733120512?s=19

His eyes were on Hodgins the entire time, at least from this angle.

        • That ball is going to Hodgins every time with that defensive look. Press coverage with no safety help makes that an easy pre snap read for Luton and Hodgins. There’s no safety to look off. It’s all about timing and placement on that throw.

          • Haha no… but nice try. If you read his analysis in its entirety, which I’m sure you did, he questioned whether Luton can hit a receiver in stride and stated Hodgins had to out athlete the DB to make many of his receptions. However, both TD’s to Hodgins were perfectly placed balls. And since his deep ball ability is being questioned – Luton had the 5th highest deep ball completion percentage in college football last year. You guys seem to expect Oklahoma like QB play when Oregon State hasn’t a put a QB in the league since Sean Mannion. Later…

          • Food for thought on people’s ability to judge QB play, by Kurt Warner…
            “Kurt Warner
            @kurt13warner
            ·
            11h
Tired of listening to ppl who know nothing about QB position, what constitutes a good read, what it means to have ball in ur hands & not trust guys around u & how important it is 4 position to need a team around them… just quit talking! (4 those w/ legit take I’m here 2 talk)”

        • I was kind of shocked when I was watching the Hawaii game and realized that more often than not Luton was not going through any progressions. I guess I didn’t notice last year? He was doing it again against Cal Poly.

      • i can’t find the video of Luton over throwing a wide open AP on a screen pass, but on that play, Luton held the ball way too long. He probably forgot the play called was a screen and not a deep post route. By the time he threw the ball to AP, he was being pressured by Cal Poly(by design), and forced AP to have to jump for the ball that was a good 3-4 feet over his head. Luton threw it on the run and didn’t take his time to lob the ball because he “felt” the pressure and the need to just get rid of it. Which goes to prove further that Luton can’t handle being pressured. Once he’s sacked and feeling pressured, he’s rattled. AKA, no Moxie and toughness inside the pocket. Wanting to compete after breaking his back for the team is one thing, but being able to stand in the pocket and actually HANDLE the pressure on a screen pass, that’s not good to have in a QB. Screen play is designed to let the defense “rush” the QB and then when the QB sees the RB out front of the OL, that’s when he “checks down” and lobs the pass to the RB. Everyone but Luton executed that play perfectly.

      • Agree to disagree rev. I’d call those meh throws made to look good by a great receiver.

It’s fine. Luton’s the starter. I’m rooting for him as all Beavs. I want him to do well and succeed. I just feel the decision to play him is a short term patch by a coach not on the hot seat that could hurt the long term rebuild. It’ll be my last Luton post as there’s not much else to say. “HE IS WHO WE THOUGHT HE WAS”

        • Your silly… the QB should not be throwing to the best receiver? That should always be the first look, just happened to be they couldn’t stop them… you’d rather him look at all the receivers that aren’t open than hit the guy that’s guaranteed… if they start covering him then you go elsewhere, didn’t happen that game cause it didn’t have to… Name a pro team that doesn’t target their best receiver, quit with this delusional mindset cause you hate Luton… Are you Gebbia’s dad?

          • I don’t have the time or desire to debate this with you Charles. Obviously we have different expectations and aspirations for that which we donate our time and money to. Said my peace on Luton and for me at this point only time will tell.

So in closing, Smith has been near flawless and Luton is great. They’ve done what they needed to do and the woes are obviously on the d. Gebbia is not my son. I won’t let mine play beyond flag to try to preserve their marbles. Good night all and go beavs

          • The fact is the that you think that all successes and failures begin and end with the QB tells me all I need to know… If we had even a decent defense we would have won a lot more games… It’s hard to have a conversation with people who can’t see that

          • Never said any of those things you attributed to me brosky. All I’ve said is Luton is who he is which is not a power 5 qb who passes to his 1st option 80% of the time, and I’d prefer to have the future get more reps.

Ok state we got lit up in all phases. D was especially poor. Having Tom Brady back there wouldn’t have won us that game.

The defense did put us in a position to win the Hawaii game, and the qb and coaching staff pissed it away. Not sure what other games you’re referring to, last year? Different team.

So here we are. Debating a 6th year senior with a big arm but a lot of flaws. Again: id prefer youth. But I’m just some no nothing arm chair so who cares.

  15. Here’s my evaluation of Luton,

Basically he’s at his peak. He won’t be much better than his current play. The coaches are playing to his strengths. He’s not improvising which is a good thing. Playmakers around him are making him look better than he is, vs the other way around.

Speaks volumes of the coaching here. They have made a fcs level QB into an avg pac 12 qb.

You might complain about how slow his progressions are but I don’t think the coaches are asking him to go that far. Looks like he’s only having to read 1/2 of the field. Plus would you really trust Luton to go through a full field progression?

Luton has done a decent job of what the coaches are asking but it doesn’t feel like he’s pushing the offense forward. I’m on the Gebbia train but I can see that it’ll be more risk/reward with him. He’d have great games and some really poor games. I would argue, get him in there to get him experience.

If Luton struggles vs Stanford, I believe js will put Gebbia in the UCLA game. There’s no saving this season so js should build for the future.

  16. OT: Through my work, I was selected to receive a free corn hole game set. So I thought I would share which game set I went with out of the 21 options. No idea why the Jr. Benny is an option let alone that popular of a choice, but it is an option.

These are the Oregon State boards to choose from:

    https://www.victorytailgate.com/team/collegiate/oregon-state-beavers/cornhole-board

    I chose this one:

  17. Damn, dangerous weekend on I-5 for BeaverNation.
Mike Parker posted this after his car spun out of control on the freeway. Fortunately it sounds like nobody was hurt.

    https://twitter.com/MEPOSU/status/1173693713886769152?s=19

In addition, just south of Portland on I-5, Jaelen Bush’s family was driving down to the game Saturday and some asshole blindly threw a huge rock onto the freeway that landed on the their passenger side of the windshield and just destroyed that thing. They were very fortunate the safety glass held together because the damage was right in front of his mom’s face. Police haven’t caught the people who did it yet.

  18. LOL….an honest coach.
Miami (Ohio) coach Chuck Martin on facing Ohio State: “It’s kind of like going to recess and they have the first 85 picks.”

  19. Still don’t think we are bowling this year. Luton had good stats for sure, but his WR’s made some pretty amazing plays. Still think Gebbia has a much higher ceiling and gives us the best chance to succeed in the future. He needs more reps

  20. I’d rather limit the hits on Gebbia and unleash him next year… He’s not a big guy so letting the best of PAC 12 drive him into the ground all season doesn’t make sense to me.. we are not losing games because of our QB, why risk injuries? Let the 6th year player take the hits

      • Number one he tends to run, thus makes him more likely to get hit… Number two we’ve yet to play Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Arizona State… All teams that pressure the QB… Giving up two sacks to OKST, Hawaii, and Cal Poly proves nothing

  21. Odell-beckham
    Antonio Brown
    Randy Moss
    Terrell Owens
Chad Ochocinco (the craziest of them all? Dude actually changed his name)

Devon Williams – the next psychopath wide receiver for the Beavs?

  22. Our 5 most recent offers have been to:
    Tyson McWilliams
    Devon Williams
    Bennett Williams
    Ronald Williams Jr
    Ronald Harge

Are we offering by name association?

  23. Totally OT but I thought worth sharing- A month or so ago a contest was going on I think via Facebook to win a s$300 hopping trip with coach Tinkle to Safeway. Long story short my mom won and got to go shopping with coach Tinkle today. She donated the food purchased to a family friends whose husband has stage 4 cancer with maybe a year to live. Tinkle was very nice discussing his upbringing being a part of 11 kids. He allowed the family who was accepting the donations to join in on the shopping trip. Win or lose, sounds like a great guy to have as a coach within the university. If any of you know Seth Raleigh, prayers up for him and his family. He is an OSU alum and use to work at Block 15 for a bit. His family is struggling with this. He is a fighter but it’s not looking good.

    • We could talk about how good our Offensive line is doing in the pass blocking this year so far? Or talk about how we’ve only punted 10 times so far this season for an average of 3.33 punts per game vs the average of 5.08 punts a game last season. Also the punt average was 39.5 yards last year; this season, 43.7 yards a punt. Our 3rd down conversions is above 50% so far this season. We’re also converting more first downs this season as well. So there are positives happening with this team.

  24. Fall baseball roster has 43 guys. It’s a young team lacking star power. Canham will have his work cut out for him. Lots of opportunity for freshman to step up. Returning players need to really step up.

I believe the team is traveling to miss st for a series. Tough one with a fairly inexperienced roster. Hopefully the rest of the non conf is lighter than prior years.

Making the postseason is the goal. If freshmen step up, they’ve got a shot at hosting.

    • 7 returning players had over 100 at bats last year. And Jake Harvey, Dukart, and Claunch were close. And getting Verburg and Mulholland back is huge. Verburg was really good last year until they decided to have his elbow scoped.

      SP – Christian Chamberlain
      SP – Mitchell Verburg
      SP – Jake Mulholland
      C – Troy Claunch
      1B – Ryan Ober
      2B – Andy Armstrong
      SS – Jake Dukart
      3B – George Mendazona
      LF – Joe Casey
      CF – Kyler McMahan
      RF – Preston Jones
      DH – Alex McGarry

  25. Trying to remember when all the Nebraska transfers started happening last year. Seeing more names pop up. Hopefully Smith can grab a few for needed position.

    What position groups are light?

    • We’re basically in that window. Between when the season started and when Fall enrollment’s late add/drop date expires(Oct 13th) is our prime time to snag transfers who want to leave their team and not waste an extra year of eligibility. They would still need to sit out this season, but they would be eligible for next season if they can get enrolled for Fall 2019 academically.

Most schools have already closed their enrollment period, leaving only a few competitors with time on their side as well as open scholarship spots.

        • I haven’t. Everybody has been quiet, including Williams.

If you look at everybody who he has followed on twitter since entering the transfer portal, it’s been only 4 people. a Kansas coach, an ASU coach, the OSU director of player personnel, and Tristan Gebbia. That’s it.

And ASU and Kansas have already closed fall enrollment.

An alternative route he could take would be to join a Juco before fall enrollment is over, and then he could transfer somewhere else after next year. But i could see how an extra year in your new system would be attractive, lilke what Gebbia/Roberts/Gumbs/Lindsey had.

    • where are we heavy is an easier question to answer. Those positions are RB, Kicker, and WR. Everywhere else we’re light on talent, not necessarily bodies.

      • Assuming Bradford plays and doesn’t redshirt we lose him and Hodgins is also a high risk to leave. I’d take some plug and play receivers if they are available.

        • I honestly don’t see Hodgins leaving early. His brother will be a Jr. Next year and he’ll be a Sr. He’ll get his degree and he’ll be able to play with his brother for 1 more season. If I could go back and play sports with my brother who was 2 years older than me, I would so want him to stay to have that memory together. That’s just me though.

          • The Hodgins brothers already have 2 seasons together, plus they had 3 in High School. They might be sick of each other at this point.

If he doesn’t go NFL, he’ll be a very popular grad transfer possibility for a ton of teams next year anyway. Not saying he would leave, but without Luton here, I’m not sure any WR would want to stick around ;)

          • Look at that, NB is finally coming around to the dark side.

For the record, cause I know I’ll be called out the next time Luton struggles, I’m not anti Gebbia. I’m of the belief that Luton either has to play himself out of the job or Gebbia has to win it. Gebbia had all off-season and fall camp to do that and he didn’t. Unfortunately, I do expect Luton to struggle once the defensive pressure heats up in conference play and Gebbia will get his chance this season.

  26. CHAMP speaks about the accolades he is receiving:

“It’s kind of a tough situation because you kind of want to say thank you to everybody and acknowledge everybody but at the same time keep a humble mindset,” Flemings said. “Like we always say, last week was last week and we’ve got to focus on this week. I try not to pay attention to it too much but it does feel good have so much support from the fans.”

Hope the entire team is listening…….last week was last week and we’ve got to focus on this week.

    • Like last year when they destroyed southern Utah. What happened the next game…. is stanford much worse than Hawaii? I’m worried they aren’t and we saw what happened against the rainbow warriors.

      • Our offense imploded/stalled in the second half of the Hawaii game. I don’t see that happening again this season. Not that it was a fluke, but when you lose your center in the middle of the game, your play calling changes a little bit and it affected the teams mindset too much. This team bounced back and played a near perfect game against Cal Poly. It was a tune up game if you will. With a BYE this week, this team should be able to see who Stanford really is this weekend against Oregon. Usually by week 4-5 you get to see who is relevant and who has slid back in your conference.

  27. This, from Eggers:
“An early guess is that Jefferson, Lindsey and Whittley will return for the Stanford game. “
No updated remarks here on Morris but Eggers does say that Bradford has “stepped up his activity in practice and could make his debut against the Cardinal. ”

And, “Suddenly, Oregon State’s next two games — against Stanford and at UCLA on Oct. 5 — seem winnable. Whether the Beavers can make that happen, of course, remains to be seen.”

    • Jesus effing Christ- from Eggers’ piece:

“missing the likes of running back Jermar Jefferson (foot), receivers Trevon Bradford (foot) and Tyjon Lindsey (foot), center Nate Eldridge (ankle), defensive tackles Simon Sandberg (knee) and Jordan Whittley (knee), linebacker Matthew Tago (knee) and safeties David Morris (foot) and Jeffrey Manning (foot). ”

      (foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)(foot) (foot)

Is it maybe time to move away from the plastic ballet slippers?

      • yes, we need to move away from Nike cleats, shoes, and apparel. I was an Adidas kid growing up. Always wore Adidas cleats and never had issues with my ankles until I was forced to wear Nike cleats at the varsity level. Adidas is 100% better shoe quality than Nike.

        • My son has always preferred Adidas cleats, but they are getting harder to find. He found some high top Nikes that are working for him. Unfortunately, he’s on the DL with a sprained elbow, he plays LB and got it caught between two beefy offensive lineman!

          • I know exactly how that feels in reverse. I was a beefy lineman that had my arm pinned/caught in a pile I was pushing back in high school and a linebacker came up and hit me square in the shoulder. There was nothing I could do to stop him from delivering the blow and I dropped like a sack of potatoes with my arm dislocating. Now, 15 years later, I’ve got a lot of shoulder issues that are needing surgery to repair.

  28. I’m curious where most of these foot/ankle injuries have occurred. Was it on our practice field, on our game day field, or on some other team’s field? If it’s all of the above, then the shoes are likely to blame, but if most of them are occurring on a particular field, then…

I wish someone like Eggers would do a deeper dive investigation on these foot injuries, but I know teams don’t like to share many details about injuries. But I would think Coach Smith would want to figure out what’s going on also.

    • Watched Saturday’s yuck game. Broadcast threw up a graphic showing 4 of UO WRs out with injury…foot, foot, ankle, lower calf.

      What’s the common denominator?

      :::head scratching emoji:::

        • I have 4 boys in various levels of football at the moment. 4th/6th/sophomore/senior. The older two are life long hole fan(their dad went to hole) so I’ve seen/heard it all as far as Nike shit products go. Finding Nike cleats that have anything resembling padding or support is virtually impossible until you get in to high top line style shoes. The cleats geared toward skill players are flimsy misshapen garbage. Not to mention the retarded trend that some hole WR started around here of wearing soccer cleats “because they’re light”.

Unfortunately, Nike sets the tone for much of the industry and most of the other manufacturers are building mostly similar garbage. We had to look pretty hard to find cleats that offered actual support and foot protection that weren’t clunky and slow.

  29. OT notes:

Latrell Banskton had a 4 sack game this past weekend, 7.5 in the last two…

Poyer with an INT against the Giants the other night, I hadn’t seen that. Hoping the Bills can make the playoffs, but not at all sure how probable that is with QB Josh Allen…

Cooks with a 57 yard TD against the Saints the other day…

Mike Parker spun of the road on I-5 and crashed into the cable barrier separating the north and sound bound lanes…
